Introduction

English is being acknowledged as a global language nowadays. This means it has become a language of international business communication; this is one of the three main languages of such organizations as the European Union. The English language is one of the most wanted languages to learn and speak. Many people tend to learn it and even become bilingual, even though they live far away from either of the countries, which are considered to be the countries of the EL as native.

The flow of immigrating people is rising day in and day out. However, it is a hard job to learn the language and use it in a proper way, such as to achieve the objectives sought at the beginning of the learning, as the language is not a good major, but rather a great complement to the major of a person. From this point, a question arises – whether English as a second language, with all the obstacles to learning, is really worth learning. It is evident that learning English as a Second Language (ESL) has its challenges, but considering all the facts, it does not outweigh its benefits.

Firstly, it is vital to understand that English is a constantly changing language. However, changes in the language should stand the test of history. English is an evolving language that is always changing, adding novel terms and progressively changing some of its existing lexical units (Yenikeyeva, S., & Klymenko, 2021). That makes it so vital to have good communication skills to be able through communication keep up-to-date information about all the changes taking place within the language transformations. These skills additionally contribute to the level of one’s own English and help to feel quite satisfied with all the inclusiveness.

History test is one of the strictest ones in terms of language survival. Any language lives while it is a spoken language, and there are descendants who are going to inherit the language and willingly speak it. As for the English language, it either should not be afraid of the history test or at least not in the foreseeable future as too many people depend on it now.

Secondly, the given English as a Second Language essay shows the ways of teaching English are being constantly developed. The reason behind this is that some of the teaching methods are not successful, and others seem to be perfect but still need some improvements. Methodologists should take into account a variety of elements when teaching English that could impede those individuals from learning the language successfully (Rus, 2020).

Belonging to a different language family is one of the most frequent causes, which raises questions about word usage, syntax, and the arrangement of words within sentences, among other issues (Croft, 2022). The objective of those teachers is to make people understand some existing language truths that are not common to their mother language. However, alongside such methods, there are other ways to learn English as a second language quickly.

One of the most expanded ones is going to a country where English is the state language. This method might be quite a shock for people. Moreover, they should come to the country with at least some basic knowledge of the language.

However, it is an entertaining and quick method to understand the inexplicable truths existing in any language. The method has both pros and cons, as there are few countries where English is spoken as a state language, while there are too many people willing to go under it. The methods might vary, and each person should decide which method is the most suitable for them.

Thirdly, it is a widely known fact that employees who have a good command of English are preferable. Multilingual employees are considered to be specialists who have the necessary knowledge (Rustamov et al., 2022). This directly reflects on the salary of the worker. Consequently, most CVs have a subdivision, considering language knowledge, where they put the fluency of their language skills.

Multilingual employees are regarded as being able to negotiate with other businesses and employees, resulting in better communication (Holm et al., 2020). Such workers have a more stable and high-paying position than the others who do not know the languages. Not only does language fluency make the worker stand out from the other employees, but proficient communication skills also benefit his abilities and his position as a high-level professional. So, everyone who claims to have outstanding knowledge of English or any other foreign language should be ready to hold negotiations using the best of his or her proficient communication skills.

In summary, the given English as a Second Language essay showed that although the English language is hard to learn, it is worthwhile learning it as a Second language and even more beneficial as a bilingual. Firstly, the English language is most likely to stand the severe history test and survive as a language, as too many people depend on its usage.

Then, the methods of teaching English continue to be improved, made more fun, and made more manageable, which makes the learning process really interesting. Finally, a good command of English benefits the employee rate, stability, and salary, proposed as a reward for language fluency and good communication skills.

ENL (English as a Native Language) and ESL (English as a Second Language) are two terms that have become common in college applications. It is compulsory for Non-Native Speakers (NNS) of English to take an English proficiency test to confirm their grasp of the English language. Furthermore, English classes that are part of the syllabus are different for native and non-native speakers, i.e. native speakers and non-native speakers sit in different English classes. The NNS course is very important for the development of students, however should it be required on all students whose first language is not English?

Farooq Muhammad and Ul-Hassan Muhammad are of the opinion that English subject for non-native speakers is essential for the development of students in light of the continual growth of the global economy where English is considered as the accepted and recognized global language. Their argument opinion points to the fact that a good comprehension of the English language is essential and should be compulsory for the non-native speaker. Particularly for the Chinese student, English writing can prove to be very challenging even though listening is considered easy and speaking relatively easy. This is because irregularities in the spelling of English words make it very difficult for students to create a logical connection between symbols and sounds (Liou). This gives the requirement of the NNS course even more vital as though it may take time to master the English language, such confusion and difficulty will be overcome with time. Students are forced to memorize every word as separate entities to compensate, making the writing process very challenging. Should difficulty be cited as an excuse to evade learning an important facet of the rapidly growing and expanding world? Chang is of the opinion that this is why it is very important that these lingual skills are developed in students over time as they are essential for the development of career and social opportunities (Chang).

English for a non-native speaker is very difficult and cumbersome. This is because learning a different language that is different in the phonetic and tonal expression of speech and communication requires forgetting the influence of one’s native language. This at least according to William Zinsser. He believes that learning to write comfortably in a second language must be really hard, a concept shared by Farooq and Ul-Hassan. He believes that good English is very hard to find these days. The English language is plain and strong, the use of complicated vocabulary makes it even more difficult for its learners. However, there exists English that is not only simple, but straight forward. Most reporters employ this kind of English in passing across ideas and information.Learning these simple techniques can make an individual look smart with the manner in which they convey their messages, i.e. short and precise.

I believe some non-native speakers of the English language feel that English class should not be included in the syllabus. Most of them believe that it is a waste of time since they do understand the English language and can express themselves using the basic and simple English that they learned in elementary and high school. Furthermore, they believe that the English language can be learnt and acquired better in a social setting as opposed to a class meeting. They are of the opinion that since the English language should improve their social and career opportunities and experiences, it is better acquired in a social setting rather than an academic setting where grading applies. However, these perceptions are wrong because NNS like me have made mistakes that native speakers never made since we have cultural differences, different ways of expressions, different thinking models and language customs. For instance, some words I understand some words and know what they mean, but I just cannot properly use them in writing. I need this class to help me overcome these obstacles to use English essentially. Additionally, these English classes are also very important in building proficiency in a language that is used worldwide to conduct important social and business interactions.

In conclusion, the NNS classes are important for the development of social and career opportunities, as English is rapidly being accepted as the global language. As such, in order to remain relevant in one’s professional field, it is important that the NNS classes be compulsory. If the NNS classes are not undertaken by students, then the next generation of students would find it difficult to keep up with the rapidly changing job market (Liou). Furthermore, the English language is the most diverse language with a vast array of vocabulary to convey specific information and expressions (Zinsser). As such, this makes English as the most efficient language in literary and scholarly work. In order to understand such works that are required in college, a student has to take the NNS course.

English as a Second Language

Learning or acquisition of any language as a second one remains a challenge to anyone particularly if the countries of origin barely use it in their regular life (Boscov, 2012). This was my case was when I started learning English as my second language. I faced many obstacles to gain good command of English but I am happy I made it even though not proficient enough. It is important to note that the level of efficiency required by the learner highly relies on the area they want to apply it to. For instance, as a student who was to use English a medium of education I not only needed to understand it but express my ability to freely write in it (Patel, 2011). Even though English is not very difficult to learn, there are several areas that gave me a tough time. Initially, I had a problem with the multiplicity of the word-meaning and the vocabulary (Zinsser, 2012). Many vocabularies and meanings of many words still give me a hell of time, leaving me confused at times. In the end, understanding of the whole sentence to get the intended meaning becomes a problem. Construction of a good sentence in English was a nightmare although I am now in a good position to do so. Other areas that gave me a hard time to learn English include how to use prepositions and idiomatic expressions. Nevertheless, I am doing all my best to ensure that I improve my English on daily basis through writing and giving my friends to commend on it and reading English books and other forms of writings. Additionally, I listen and watch English music, news and movies especially on the TV channels dedicated for international audience. I practice a lot through communicating with my friends who are native English speakers and ask for help. As Sabatier (2012) points out, communication is one of the best ways to learn and acquire a second language.

500 Words Essay On English as a Global Language

A global language is one that is spoken and understood at an international level by a wide variety of people. Moreover, no language in the world better fits this description than the English language. This essay on English as a global language will shed more light on this issue.

Essay on English as a Global Language

Why English is a Global Language

When it comes to languages, one can make a strong argument that a strong link exists between dominance and cultural power. Furthermore, the main factor that the languages become popular is due to a powerful power-base, whether economic or political or military.

The derivation of the English language took place from languages like French, Latin, German, and other European languages. This can be a reason why many Europeans don’t find English a difficult language to learn. Furthermore, linguists argue whether the simplicity of the English language is the main reason for it becoming a global language.

The Latin script of the English language appears less complicated for people to recognize and learn. Also, the pronunciation of the English language is not as complex as other languages like Korean or Turkish for example.

Generally, the difficulty level of a language varies from person to person and it also depends on the culture to which one may belong. For example, a Korean person would find less difficulty in mastering the Japanese language in comparison to a German person. This is because of the close proximity of the Korean and Japanese cultures.

Due to the massive British colonial conquests , no culture is in complete oblivion of the English language or words. As such, English is a language that should not appear as too alien or strange to any community. Consequently, learning English is not such big of a deal for most people as they can find a certain level of familiarity with the language.

The Effectiveness of the English Language

English is a very effective language and this is evident due to the presence of various native and non-native speakers on a global scale. Furthermore, according to statistics, one-fourth of the world is either fluent in the English language or content with it. While it’s true that the number of native Mandarin speakers is the greatest in the world, Mandarin is not the global language due to its complex spellings, grammar , and letter system.

The English language, on the other hand, does not suffer from such complexity problems. Furthermore, the English language has a lot of words and synonyms to express something. As such, any word or its meaning can be expressed with a high level of accuracy.

Conclusion of the Essay on English as a Global Language

English is certainly the most widely spoken language in the world by far. On a global scale, English has the most number of speakers, who speak English either as a first or second language. Without a doubt, no other language in the world can come close to English in terms of its immense popularity.

Congress passed the act as part of Civil Rights Title VI, which prohibits discrimination based on race, color or national origin in programs or activities receiving federal financial assistance. The Bilingual Education Act requires that, when needed, schools must provide equal educational opportunities specifically for language-minority students. The Office of Civil Rights (OCR) enforces the act. Under the act, ELL students must be kept in an adequate program until they can read, write and comprehend English well enough to participate meaningfully in all aspects of the school's curriculum. While the OCR provides a set of characteristics that bilingual programs must have, it does not require any specific program for ELL instruction...

From English as a Second Language Courses to an Engineering Career, Armando Rocha Thanks CSM for Constant Support

rocha

Five years ago, College of Southern Maryland (CSM) graduate Armando Rocha ‘19 was struggling to keep up with his full-time job, taking CSM courses and trying to learn English. Today, Rocha boasts a Construction Management Technology associate of applied science degree, a bachelor’s degree in Architecture, and is working for Whiting Turner Contracting Company as a design and construction engineer.

“It has been amazing, going from not knowing English at all to having a full-time job at this level,” Rocha said. “Looking back, I was a mess at the beginning when I was trying to balance everything. Now I have more free time and am enjoying life and taking better care of myself. I am grateful to CSM and my family.”

Rocha shared that when he started at CSM, he was always exhausted, and he remembers falling asleep while in class – more than once. But rather than chastise him, his professor, CSM Business Chair Tony Stout, worked to make sure he had what he needed to succeed.

“Supporting students like Armando requires a multifaceted approach,” Stout explained. “Understanding that many of our students juggle multiple responsibilities, we foster an environment of empathy and encouragement. We also focus on one-on-one engagement to create a supportive community where they can share their challenges and successes. We held regular check-ins, not just about academics, but about their overall well-being.”

Upon earning his four-year degree from the University of Maryland (UMD) last winter, he had one more task to complete before he could call his education complete: He decided to participate in UMD’s Spring 2024 Commencement ceremony and as he was buying a new suit for the occasion, he happened to run into Stout, in a full–circle moment, that for both, showed just how far Rocha had come in five short years.

“Running into Armando at the local tailor shop was a proud moment,” said Stout. “To me, seeing him and his family there symbolized his hard work and determination. Our goal is to create opportunities for students to succeed in their chosen fields, and Armando's journey is a testament to the effectiveness of our program and the resilience of our students.”

Rocha fully credits CSM and his family with helping him to achieve his dreams.

At CSM, Rocha and his classmates became a team that learned to lean on and support each other. He, his brother Marvin, and a third student comprised the first cohort of CSM’s Construction Management Technology AAS program (which later became the AAS in Business Management with a concentration in Construction Management), and Stout said that he was able to tailor the curriculum based on real-time feedback, making sure it was both relevant and challenging while giving students real-world experience.

“We were always chatting and helping each other, it was a really good environment,” Rocha said. “It was fun, because sometimes we were the only three students in the class. It helped me learn to work with other people and be a team player.”

With the encouragement of Stout and other CSM professors, Rocha was accepted to the architecture program at the UMD where he said the transition was a challenge: Rocha was still working full time, only now he was also commuting from Waldorf to College Park and enrolled in large classes where he felt anonymous. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit and classes went online, he struggled to find the sense of community that he had enjoyed at CSM.

“When I went to UMD, it was a little scary to have over a hundred students in the same class,” Rocha said. “If I'd gone straight to UMD when I moved to Maryland, it would have been too much. CSM helped me go through the process of adapting to college.”
