India will mark 100 years of independence in 2047. Reflecting on the journey from 1947 to 2021, the celebrations of the 75th Independence anniversary, termed Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, set the tone for a future-focused India. The events that spanned from March 12, 2021, to August 15, 2023, were a prelude to the ambitious goals envisioned for 2047.

In his address from the Red Fort on August 15, 2021, Prime Minister Narendra Modi invoked the words of Swami Vivekananda from his speech “The Future of India”, where he spoke of drawing strength from India's rich history to build a future of unparalleled greatness. Vivekananda's words, “Drink deep of the eternal fountains that are behind, and after that, look forward, march forward and make India brighter, greater, much higher than she ever was”, resonate with the ethos of India's journey towards its centenary of independence.

Predicting the exact state of India in 2047 is challenging, yet certain trends and aspirations can be projected based on current trajectories and indicators like GDP, per capita income, and other broader economic metrics.

The gross domestic product (GDP) remains a critical, albeit imperfect, measure of economic progress. As of 2024, India's per capita income stands at approximately $2,700, with the purchasing power parity (PPP) per capita income around $10,120. The aggregate size of India's GDP is about $3.9 trillion (official exchange rates) and around $14.6 trillion. These figures underline India's substantial economic footprint.

The Economic Survey of 2018-19 articulated a vision for India to become a $5 trillion economy by 2024-25, necessitating a real annual GDP growth rate of 8% alongside 4% inflation. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted this trajectory, effectively setting back India's economic progress by two years. Nonetheless, the aspirations remain, with a focus on achieving sustainable and inclusive growth.

Looking ahead to 2047, several economic and developmental projections can be made. By that year, India's per capita income is expected to reach at least $10,000, with the economy's size approaching or exceeding $20 trillion. Such growth will likely transition India from a lower-middle-income country to an upper-middle-income category, nearing high-income status. It will also bring about significant socio-economic changes, including a sharp decline in poverty levels and a substantial rise in human development indicators.

By 2047, India aims to transition from its current medium human development category, with an HDI value of 0.645, to a high human development category. As of 2024, India's life expectancy is 70.8 years, the mean years of schooling is 6.5 years, and the GNI per capita (PPP) stands at $10,120. By 2047, projections indicate life expectancy will exceed 78 years, mean years of schooling will rise to over 10 years, and GNI per capita (PPP) will surpass $20,000. This progress will be driven by advancements in healthcare, educational reforms, and economic policies promoting industrialisation and the growth of the digital economy. Higher human development will reflect improved quality of life, attract foreign investment, and strengthen social equity, aligning with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Strategic investments in healthcare, education, and economic diversification, alongside effective governance, will be critical to achieving these targets, positioning India as a major global player with robust economic growth and social development.

Achieving this vision requires a comprehensive growth agenda that integrates development indicators with economic growth measures. Several key strategies will be instrumental in this journey.

Tax reforms will be pivotal in propelling India towards its 2047 vision. A streamlined GST system that encompasses all goods and services, including traditionally exempted sectors such as petroleum, real estate, and alcohol, will significantly enhance economic efficiency. Implementing stable and predictable GST rates, ideally consolidated into three primary rates (6%, 12%, and 18%), will reduce compliance costs and curb unnecessary classification disputes and litigation. On the direct tax front, eliminating exemptions and broadening the tax base will enhance equity and compliance. This reform will prevent tax avoidance and ensure that all income categories contribute fairly to the national revenue, which is crucial for funding public services and infrastructure. Additionally, integrating personal and corporate taxation under a simplified, exemption-free regime will reduce complexities and litigation, fostering a more transparent and efficient tax environment. These comprehensive tax reforms are essential for increasing the tax-to-GDP ratio from the current 18% to a targeted 23%, providing the government with the necessary resources to invest in public goods and services, ultimately driving sustainable economic growth and social development.

 Investment and export growth are critical for India's economic trajectory. Sustaining high investment rates, particularly in the private sector, is essential for driving economic expansion. As of 2024, India's gross fixed capital formation is approximately 28% of GDP, with private investment playing a significant role. Enhancing productivity, currently growing at about 5% annually, and leveraging the demographic dividend—where 62% of the population is in the working-age group—will further fuel this growth. However, this demographic advantage will begin to diminish post-2035, necessitating urgent action to maximise current opportunities. Increasing exports, which contribute around 20% to the GDP, is also vital. Policies focused on improving infrastructure, easing business regulations, and entering into beneficial trade agreements are expected to boost exports and attract foreign direct investment (FDI), currently standing at approximately $60 billion annually.

Labour market reforms are also essential for driving productivity. As of 2024, India's labour force participation rate stands at approximately 46%, with female participation significantly lower at 23%. Increasing overall participation, particularly among women, is vital for harnessing the full potential of the workforce. Implementing skill development programs is crucial, given that 53% of the workforce lacks formal skill training. Formalizing the informal sector, which constitutes about 80% of employment, will improve job security and productivity. Efficient intermediation between labour supply and demand through technology-driven platforms can match skills with market needs, reducing unemployment and underemployment rates. By addressing these areas, India can improve its labour productivity growth from the current 5% annually to higher levels, contributing significantly to economic expansion.

Urbanisation and decentralisation are pivotal for sustainable development in India. With an urbanisation rate of 34% as of 2024, India's cities are rapidly expanding. Efficient urban governance is necessary to manage this growth. Modernising land records through digital cadastral surveys will ensure transparent land use and reduce disputes. Streamlined land use policies will facilitate better planning and development. Empowering local governments is crucial.

Enhancing public expenditure efficiency is vital for maximising resource utilisation and achieving sustainable development. As of 2024, public expenditure accounts for approximately 27% of India's GDP. Prioritising expenditure based on clear cases of market failure and focusing on essential infrastructure and social services, such as health and education, will ensure better outcomes. Establishing a Public Expenditure Council, akin to the GST Council, can coordinate and rationalise spending across different government levels, enhancing effectiveness and reducing redundancies. Such a council would evaluate and prioritise expenditure programmes, ensuring that resources are allocated to the most impactful areas. This strategic allocation can improve infrastructure, with a current focus on projects like the Bharatmala and Sagarmala initiatives, and social services, ensuring broader access and quality. These measures will enhance the efficiency of public spending, contributing to higher economic growth and improved social indicators.

Privatisation and market reforms are essential for fostering a competitive economic environment. Implementing the New Public Sector Enterprise (PSE) Policy, which aims to reduce the number of sectors reserved for state enterprises to four, will drive efficiency and innovation. The current weighted average of MFN-applied tariff rates on manufactured products stands at 6.8%; rationalising import duties and reducing tariffs will enhance competitiveness. Lowering tariff barriers, particularly for raw materials and intermediate goods, will reduce production costs and boost exports. Privatising non-strategic PSEs will increase efficiency in sectors like telecommunications and aviation. Rationalising the number of sectors and focusing on critical areas such as defence and infrastructure will protect strategic interests while promoting private sector growth. These reforms are expected to attract greater FDI.

India's journey towards 2047 is one of transformation and opportunity. By embracing comprehensive reforms, fostering inclusive growth, and leveraging its demographic and economic potential, India can realise its vision of a prosperous, developed nation that celebrates 100 years of independence with pride and progress.

Modi’s Independence Day speech focused on the goal of ‘Viksit Bharat,’ meaning developed India, by 2047. Achieving that would need an economic miracle.

When India’s prime minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation on Independence Day, August 15,  he outlined an ambitious vision of “ Viksit Bharat “ meaning “developed India.” The deadline for this is 2047, the 100th anniversary of independence.

The target may be taken as a real per capita income of $20,000 in current dollar terms. If it gets there, India will find itself in the company of modestly rich European nations, such as Greece .

India’s current per capita income is $2,500, so the nation would need to achieve an eightfold increase in just 23 years.  This is akin to chasing a 400-plus score in a one-day international cricket match, on a deteriorating wicket. 

For India to reach this target will require bold strategies, Slow-and-steady, incremental policy making won’t be enough. The “asking rate” is 9.4 percent growth in real terms year after year for the next 23 years.

There have been a few such phenomenal chases in history. Some East Asian economies such as South Korea, Singapore, and Taiwan grew from the mid-1960s to the early 1990s at an impressive pace of 8 percent.  This is widely known as the East Asian Miracle . After its 1978 reforms, China also achieved its miracle, a nearly 10 percent growth rate over a sustained period.

India will need its own miracle to achieve a similar feat. 

Simply copying the East Asian or Chinese models is not an option. The political context of the East Asian and Chinese economies in their high growth phase was very different from the current Indian context. But more importantly, the growth model used by these economies – one of manufacturing and export-led growth — is unlikely to be available to India. 

For starters, the current international political climate is not conducive to globalization. Increased protectionism in the U.S. and European Union and the fragility of global supply chains , which became apparent during the 2008 global financial crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic, have reduced openness to trade. The proportion of international trade as a percentage of the world GDP has been shrinking since 2008 . Some economists have termed this phenomenon “ deglobalization .”

The expansion in economic activity required for India to increase its income eightfold is also much harder to achieve in a world where the threat of climate change is real. It is inconceivable that an economy of the magnitude of India will grow eightfold without leaving behind a major carbon footprint. In a world where there is an increasing consensus on reducing emissions, there will be growing pressure against economies flouting stringent environmental regulations. 

Finally, labor-intensive, low-skilled manufacturing is under increasing threat from automation and artificial intelligence. This is one of the reasons why rich countries, with abundant capital but expensive labor, are trying to bring jobs back to their shores using automation technologies such as robotics.

The growth experience of the Western world as well as East Asia (including China) suggests that the typical route to economic prosperity requires the rise of the manufacturing sector and the decline of agriculture as the first step. The rise in services follows only after that.  However, India may have to follow a different model of development where growth would be led by the services sector. That is what some prominent economists, such as Dr. Raghuram Rajan and Rohit Lamba, have recently argued .

This may be India’s only shot.

To succeed in this new, services-led paradigm, India will need to embark on economic reforms that encourage the formation of high-skill human capital capable of competing with the best in the world. This will require investment in an education policy that emphasizes creative thinking and entrepreneurial skills over rote learning. 

Second, India will need to make its factor market , particularly the labor market, less rigid. This will ensure that firms can increase or reduce their labor forces as required in a rapidly changing technological landscape.

Services-led growth tends to benefit educated people in cities. With rising inequality and rural distress already a major concern, India will need to undertake social sector reforms to ensure that the opportunities, and gains, from a growing services sector are widely shared.  Without this, there will be a backlash (as already witnessed during the recent elections), making it politically infeasible to follow the service-led growth model.

In addition to being a desirable goal to strive for, Viksit Bharat 2047 has many symbolic meanings. The date coincides with India completing a century of its independence. The period leading up to it is being dubbed as “ Amrit Kaal ” – an auspicious era marking India’s manifest destiny to prosperity. 

On a more sobering note of demographic transition, it’s also a narrow window of opportunity for India to get rich before getting old.

In 2021 Independence Day speech, the Hon’ble Prime Minister paid homage to the freedom fighters and shared his vision for Amrit Kaal and 2047, when the country would celebrate 100 years of independence. He mentioned that the goal of 'Amrit Kaal' is to create an India where the level of facilities is not dividing the village and the city; where the government does not interfere unnecessarily in the lives of citizens; where there is world’s every modern infrastructure. To achieve these goals, he gave the slogan, “SabkaSaath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, and SabkaPrayas.” 

The PM, in his 2022 Independence Day speech, mentioned how the entire country celebrated Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav and shared Panch Pran of Amrit Kaal: Goal of developed India, to remove any trace of the colonial mindset, take pride in our roots, unity and a sense of duty among citizens. He urged the citizens to nurture new possibilities, realize new resolutions and move ahead with confidence. He also underlined collective efforts and teamwork to take the country forward.  

Roadmap 

Expounding on the PM’s vision, the Union Finance Minister, in her Union Budget FY 2022-2023 speech , shared that during the Amrit Kaal (India at 75 to India at 100), the government aims to 

• Complement the macro-economic level growth focus with a micro-economic level all-inclusive welfare focus.
• Promote digital economy & fintech, technology-enabled development, energy transition, and climate action.
• Rely on virtuous cycle starting from private investment with public capital investment helping to crowd-in private investment. 

Elaborating more on the goals for 2047, the union budget for 2023-2024, the first budget in the Amrit Kaal, envisioned India as a technology-driven and knowledge-based economy with strong public finances and a robust financial sector. It reemphasised that Jan Bhagidari through Sabka Saath, Sabka Prayas is essential and delineated the Saptarishi principles: Inclusive Development; Reaching the Last Mile; Infrastructure and Investment; Unleashing the Potential; Green Growth; Youth Power; Financial Sector. 

In line with the above-mentioned futuristic and inclusive vision, the government has taken several steps, like focusing on women's development, health, education, skill development, science and technology advancement, infrastructure creation, employment, agriculture, increasing manufacturing, industrial production, innovation, boosting indigenous industry etc. 

Keeping in mind the impact of climate change, special focus will be given to green growth as per the Panchamrit policy. The government is committed to increasing its non-fossil energy capacity to 500 GW by 2030; meeting 50% of its energy requirements from renewable energy by 2030; reducing the total projected carbon emissions by one billion tonnes by 2030; reducing the carbon intensity of its economy by less than 45%; achieving the target of Net Zero by 2070.  The government is already implementing various programs for green fuel, green energy, green farming, green mobility, green buildings, and green equipment, and policies for efficient use of energy across various economic sectors.  Similarly, the Government is also focussing on critical and emerging technologies like blockchain, AI, IoT etc. 

To boost the economy, employment, innovation and industrial output, various policies on skill development, ease of doing business, and schemes like PM Gati-Shakti, PLI are already in place. Similarly, the Competitiveness Roadmap for India@100 emphasises productivity as a driver of sustained prosperity through sector-specific and region-specific policies based on the ‘ 4 S ’ principles. The 4S principles stress the need for prosperity growth to be matched by social progress , to be  shared across all regions within India, to be environmentally sustainable , and to be solid in the face of external shocks.  

India is well on the path to becoming one of the two largest economies in the world by 2047.  Hon’ble Commerce and Industries Minister has also predicted that by 2047 India will be a global powerhouse with the size of economy around $ 35 trillion.  The vision document for the same is already being prepared in consultation with a wide-range of stakeholders across all sectors.  

The seeds we sow today will define the fruits reaped in future. To achieve the above-mentioned transformational objectives of Viksit Bharat envisioned for 2047, the country must continue to focus on “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, and Sabka Prayas.” This Independence Day, let us pledge to make efforts, individually and collectively.

Thus, the day of Independence was a jubilant one, marking the end of the era of India’s subjugation.

The Government of India, on the eve of the 75th Independence Day of India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the remaining 25 years to the 100th Independence Day will be observed as “Azadi ka Amrit Kaal”. This period will be characterised by the unprecedented growth of the nation. This makes the year 2047 an important year for India. Thus, we bring to you a My Vision for India in 2047 Essay in English.

A My Vision for India in 2047 Essay in English is as follows.

India is an ancient country, but the Republic of India as we know it is relatively new, born on 15th August 1947 after nearly 200 years of subjugation by the British. India’s freedom was hard to attain, mainly because the British possessed sophisticated weaponry and had a better political system. Thus, many Indians had given up their lives to make India free again. Every Independence Day, we celebrate this very spirit of our Freedom Fighters. 

India became Independent after a long and arduous struggle. Before the British arrived in India, India was known as a Golden Bird because of the wealth it had and the prosperity it observed. But, for the period of 200 years under British rule, India was robbed of millions of rupees, crores of Indians were killed, millions became poor and malnourished, and multiple man-made famines took place. India’s progress was taken aback significantly. This makes the eve of Independence an important day for all Indians.

My Vision for India in 2047 is that India recovers itself to become the Golden Bird once again. It is also that India eliminates poverty, joblessness, caste-based discrimination, corruption, illiteracy, social ills, and social taboos and becomes inclusive, progressive, growth-oriented, etc. My vision for India in 2047 also includes it becoming a highly developed nation with clean roads, streets without garbage, high-rise buildings, and good public services such as education, medical facilities, social security, etc. It must also be free of crime, murder, discrimination between men and women, uneducated people, etc.

My Vision for India in 2047 is also that it must become a developed country. All Indians, by 2047, must have a decent income so that they can feed their families and children. Clean drinking water, which is not available in many places, must be available to all, since, without water, life cannot be sustained. It also includes the social discrimination that has plagued our country that must also go away. All persons, be it a man or a woman, a Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Jain, Buddhist, an Upper Caste or Lower Caste must be equal citizens contributing equally to the country. 

My vision for India in 2047 also includes an India which is digitally more advanced. As per my vision, all Indian cities must become smart cities by 2047, which will include smart traffic management, walkable localities, Housing and inclusiveness, developed open spaces such as parks, recreational spaces and playgrounds, smart public transport, citizen-friendly & cost-effective governance, smart mobility, smart management of resources and much more. 

The Village is the basic unit of India. But at this point, they are in a seriously bad condition. They lack basic infrastructure and facilities such as proper roads, public schools and hospitals, better management of resources, public institutions, lighted streets, or even pucca houses. Since the villages are abodes of traditional ideas and many regressive views, my vision for India in 2047 also includes such a village society that is progressive to accommodate modern ideas and ideals.

India is on the path to becoming one of the greatest countries in the world. It has been growing at high rates for many years. It has substantially reduced poverty, hunger, crime, corruption, social ills, malnutrition, infant mortality etc., and has increased the quality and quantity of public services such as schools, hospitals, vocational centres etc. 

The twenty-first century is rightly described as the Asian Century. It has witnessed a huge deal of growth in many Asian countries and India is at its forefront. However, we lag behind many Asian countries which started off as poor but have progressed significantly to become one of the richest and most powerful countries in the world. Thus, Indians need to work hard to catch these countries and improve their social indicators. It is the duty of every Indian to make the twenty-first century not only the Asian Century but the Indian Century.

On this occasion, the entire country is celebrating the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav.  Through Azadi ka, Amrit Mahotsav India is celebrating the glorious history of its people, culture, and achievements.

After 25 years, in the year 2047, it will be 100 years since the country got independence. In the coming 25 years the “Amrit Kaal” for the country.

The goal of this “Amrit Kaal” is to build an India that has all the modern infrastructure of the world. Our country in 2047 will be what we create today. I would share my vision for India in 2047.

The India of my vision where women are safe and walk freely on road. Also, it will be a place where there is freedom of equality for all and everyone.

It would be a place where there is no discrimination of caste, color, gender, social or economic status, and race. I see it as a place that sees an abundance of development and growth.

It is my vision that India would be self-sufficient in food and the women of India of 2047 as empowered.

Who has equal rights with men, with whom there is no discrimination in the Job? Poor children should get an education. There should be no continue to be the land of peace.

Although the country is on the path of continuous development for the last 75 years, but in the coming 25 years, we Indians will have to become as powerful as we were never before.

It does not matter that India has more than 50 percent of its population below the age of 25 and a staggering 65 percent below the age of 35. . Let us imagine what India will be at 100 — a mere 32 years away. The year is 2047 of course! Though the majority of the population will still be under 30 we can no longer be termed a young nation: we were never young at heart in any case! By no stretch of the imagination can 68 (today India is 68 years old ) be termed young and all those ageing young Some research was done among two factions — those who are now 60 and may not be there in 2047 and a younger lot who are likely to be there in 2047.

The question was what will India be like at 100 ie., in 2047?

The first faction was maybe too realistic who felt that corruption at every level will see the end.

Will it be a centenary of celebration of ideals on which India is built or will it be a waste field full of corruption intolerance and hopelessness? The polarisation of India will be more marked and clearly defined. The North-South divide is going to matter by then. With the south contributing close to 35 percent of the country’s revenue, it’s going to matter.

“Strong majoritarian democracy, traditional, conservative, gaining traction, reaching about 15 percent of it’s potential.

Another hopeful observation: “An India without any caste or religious divide. Only reservation to be on merit basis!! “Oh God! Two billion people in 2047.  No place to walk!”

And here’s the note to sign off on: “I remain completely optimistic. I owe a lot to our nation and I deliberately chose India from three distinct situations when I could have opted for a perhaps, quicker climb to personal success by remaining in the United Kingdom, Europe or Singapore. It would have been the lazy way out. 2047, that is, 32 years from now is not so far way, just about six governments away. A major thing that will be accomplished is infrastructure. Once we have our ports, roads and energy, the next steps will follow automatically. There are a lot of downsides to the bandwagon that is India but the upsides far outweigh all the negatives. The dignity of our citizens is maintained and for this alone, I am grateful.”

A bright future for India

In our conversations with business leaders, including at Davos 2023, we find that many are pessimistic about the world’s prospects for economic growth. PwC’s new 26th Annual Global CEO Survey shows that 73% of CEOs expect economic growth to decline in the next 12 months - the deepest pessimism in a decade.

But there is a bright light in the gloom - India. We believe India could not only grow its economy this year, but do so at one of the fastest rates of any nation in the world. In this brief article, we explain why we believe India could have a bright future not just this year but for decades to come, and what it will take to achieve this.

Modi’s ambition

India is entering an exciting, but also uniquely challenging phase in its history. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has declared that India will achieve developed country status by 2047. PwC’s own projections show that India could become the world’s third biggest economy as early as 2030 and have a GDP exceeding that of the US by 2060.

By any measure, India is already an economic powerhouse, achieving one of the world’s highest growth rates in the past two decades and quintupling per capita income since 2000. [ 1 ]

To realise its future ambitions, however, India must transition from a largely agrarian, informal economy to a services, advanced manufacturing, and knowledge-led hub, positioning itself to take full advantage of the world’s increasing technological sophistication and drive for sustainability. In fact, PwC’s Global CEO Survey shows that business leaders believe the economic winners of the future will be those that achieve profound transformation, aligning with major forces changing the game from tech disruption to decarbonisation.

India’s population - expected to overtake China’s in size in the year ahead, making India the most populous nation on earth - represents at once its greatest opportunity, but also one of its greatest challenges. Only if India can find a way to harness more of its people’s creative energies, ensuring they have the skills and opportunities to propel the transformation, will Prime Minister Modi’s dream become reality.

If India navigates these challenges, it can provide a model for the world of inclusive, sustainable economic growth. It is in all the world’s interest that India succeeds.

India’s rise in action: Bangalore airport

To see an inspiring example of how India is making good on these challenges, visit the new Terminal 2 at Bangalore Airport. Made mostly of renewable materials like bamboo and run entirely on green energy, it’s admirably sustainable. The terminal is packed with cutting-edge technology such as biometric security. Built by a diverse team from female executives to young apprentices, the terminal will bring 25 million people a year to the ‘Silicon Valley of India.’ The new terminal demonstrates India’s ability to draw on the talents of all its people to deliver sustainable projects that power its knowledge and tech-led economy.

Below, we identify five springboards for India to accelerate its economic growth in a way that is good for both people and the planet. These springboards can propel India faster to developed country status, achieving more exemplary projects like Terminal 2 at pace and scale.

Springboard One: Seize the opportunities of the green revolution.

The transition from a high to a low carbon economy will involve a profound rewiring  of the global economy, birthing whole new industries. India is at the forefront of this transition, growing new sectors from renewable energy to biofuel. For example, India announced the National Hydrogen Mission to make itself a hub for the production and export of green hydrogen, enabled by a sunny climate that can provide cheap, plentiful solar power to make green hydrogen in vast amounts. [ 2 ]  India is striving to scale up emerging technologies like low-carbon steel, cement and fertilisers. The International Energy Agency believes India could become a global leader in renewable batteries and green hydrogen, bringing India potential revenues of $80 billion. [ 3 ]  Our Global CEO Survey shows that 60% of CEOs in India plan to innovate new, climate-friendly products or processes.

India is making moves to transition its own economy to a low carbon model, supporting the growth of its green industries while positioning it to thrive in a global economy that increasingly demands alignment with net zero. For example, though it still relies on oil and coal, India is now the world’s third largest producer of renewable energy, sourcing 40% of its electricity from renewables and adding renewable energy capacity faster than any other major economy. [ 4 ] India is particularly vulnerable to a changing climate - PwC’s own research shows that  climate-related drought threatens an expanse of India’s farmland the size of Italy - underlining the importance of India reducing its emissions while helping to make a low carbon economy a reality.

Springboard Two: Be a leader in tech.

We’ve heard it said that society is in the first minute of the first hour of the first day of the tech revolution. That may or may not be true, but what we do know is that technology disruption will continue changing the game for all businesses, creating massive opportunities for those who can lead the shift. Some outside India do not yet recognise it as the tech pioneer that it really is - in our opinion rivaling the United States and China, with tech companies equal in their sophistication and prominence to international counterparts. For example, India is a leader in digital transactions, processing about as many digital payments in India alone as Visa processes payments in any form - globally. [ 5 ]  Incredibly, India has rolled out biometric identification to 99% of its population, even those in rural areas. India is boldly adopting cutting-edge tech, rolling out India’s first digital rupee pilot in December 2022. The digital rupee could grow India’s economy by making its financial system more efficient, secure, and inclusive. [ 6 ] This kind of boldness can make India an even bigger tech contender in coming years, making the most of its young, digitally-savvy population, rapidly expanding internet connectivity, impending national launch of 5G, and data costs that are among the lowest in the world. [ 7 ]

Springboard Three: Develop the sectors of tomorrow.

Although, as we’ve seen, a significant share of India’s population is dependent on the agrarian and informal economies, the country is making the right moves to grow sectors from manufacturing to services. India is building the infrastructure to support a modern, connected, service-led economy. The Indian government has committed a full 10% of GDP, or £270bn, to the Self Reliant India initiative to achieve a range of development goals, including building the infrastructure and technology to support a vibrant, modernising economy. Public-private partnerships are funneling massive amounts of capital to economy-growing projects like building roads and airports, helping to double India’s miles of national highways since 2014. [ 8 ] The government is offering production-linked incentives (PLI) to attract manufacturing to India and support domestic producers, speeding India’s progress toward being a global manufacturing and export hub. These incentives have been big draws for mobile phone and electronics manufacturers, making India one of the world’s biggest exporters of smartphones. India is well-positioned to attract companies seeking to diversify their global supply chains, spurring the growth of India’s industries.

Springboard Four: Build skills for the 21st century.

Every nation faces a challenge to ensure its people have the skills for the future from creativity to tech know-how. The challenge for India is a formidable one - given the sheer size of the population, with the majority currently working in agrarian or informal roles - but it is imperative that it overcomes it. India’s government is striving to upskill working-age people nationwide to prepare them for the jobs of the 21st century as part of its New Education Policy. The Policy helps people build skills needed for the modern economy by moving away from rote learning towards flexible, creative thinking, offering a strong programme of vocational education, and emphasising modular and lifelong learning to help people update their skills in a fast-changing economy. For our part, PwC has worked with UNICEF and GenU to identify the pragmatic life skills  youth need to meet this century’s challenges. PwC is supporting GenU to upskill 300 million of India’s young people to compete in today’s digital era.

Springboard Five: Harness the potential of young people and women.

India can super-charge its rise if it taps into the productive capacities of more of its people. For any country, the greater the number of people who can join the workforce, the faster the economy can grow. People under 30 and women make up more than 70% of India’s population, so they represent a huge energy source for India’s economy - if they have opportunities to fulfil their potential. [ 9 ]

Start with youth. India’s population is young (most are under 30) so its number of working-age people is expanding rapidly, outpacing China’s which has peaked. By 2030, India is projected to have the largest working-age population in the world. If these people can find jobs, India could see a huge ‘demographic dividend’ - speedy economic growth from millions of new workers entering the labour force. (There is danger too; if these people can’t find jobs, millions of potential workers could instead become disaffected, fuelling social instability; this danger underlines the importance of the government’s work to help youth build skills.)

Women are another potential engine of future economic growth. Currently less than 20% of India’s women work outside the home. Giving its women employment parity with men would provide India with more extra workers than the EU has of either gender, which would, according to the International Monetary Fund, make India at least 27% richer. [ 10 ]  The path won’t be easy - India’s female labour force participation has been declining [ 11 ] - but the government is working to change that by, for example, removing laws that inhibit women working.

The five springboards we have identified could propel a meteoric rise for India, aligning the nation with some of the most powerful forces shaping the global economy from tech to sustainability. The road is fraught with challenges such as still-poor infrastructure in many rural areas. Due to the lack of education, people are not getting jobs and the result of this is poverty.

I see India as poverty free in the year 2047 as the current government has taken massive steps to reduce poverty in India. India’s path to 7-8% growth: The country has to sustain momentum to achieve developed nation status

I have been a regular visitor to India for more than three decades, and every visit has been an invigorating experience. I have witnessed first-hand the significant changes in the economic landscape of the country. It is this economic transformation that gives India the runway to achieve its ambition of becoming a ‘developed’ nation by 2047, which also marks its 100th year of Independence.

In the face of global challenges such as the geopolitical tensions swirling around us all and multi-decade-high inflation, India has the potential to generate differentiated success. Of course, as with every substantial undertaking, there are hurdles to overcome, but with a fast-growing economy driven by investment, innovation, and demographics together with macroeconomic indicators, India has a real opportunity to seize.

It took Independent India six decades to become a $1-trillion economy. Between 2007 and 2018, it more than doubled its GDP to $2.7 trillion. From 2018 to 2028, India is expected to emerge as the third-largest economy in the world, with a GDP of close to $6 trillion.

An important foundation of India’s economic resilience has been macro-stability, driven by consistent policymaking over the last decade. An outcome of this consistency is evident in the confidence to sustain 7% GDP growth. A key positive indicator has been the narrowing of the current account deficit over the last decade, due to the structural upshift in India’s services exports—which have now more than doubled in the last seven years and in quantum exceeds Saudi Arabia’s oil exports. Schemes like production-linked incentives (PLIs) and a build-up of the fourth-largest foreign exchange reserves of $667 billion, covering nearly a year of imports, also augur well for economic growth.

Inflation is down from double digits a decade ago to less than 5% and is far less volatile compared to developed markets. Steps by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on inflation containment, quality of credit disbursal, and resilience of the banking sector are supported by the government’s commitment to balancing fiscal prudence and productive capital expenditure.

Global investors are optimistic about India. Apart from the strong macros, India benefits from the emphasis on both physical and digital infrastructure creation, a demographic dividend with a large English-speaking population, a robust energy transition road map, and commitment to social and economic uplift of its citizens.

Crowding In

Central to India’s growth story is the government’s focus on infrastructure, with capital expenditure increasing at a CAGR of 27% over the last five years. In the past decade, India has built three times more infrastructure than it had in the previous 60 years, with the highway network, port, and airline capacity doubling. With this context, it is important to note that between 1950 and 1989, approximately a quarter of the US’s productivity increase was attributable to investments in highways, indicating the multiplier effect that accrues with such investments.

This increase in government capital expenditure has been accompanied by a remarkable increase in tax buoyancy at both corporate and individual levels. Tax collections have grown at an average annual rate of 20% over the past three years, creating a broader and deeper tax base. The GST system of input credits rapidly expanded the tax net, increased collections, and formalised the economy, thus giving the government the resources to invest in critical infrastructure projects, creating a virtuous growth cycle.

Going forward, we can expect a ‘crowding in’ of private sector capital expenditure, as India Inc. (private non-financial companies) generates strong cash flows, has its lowest leverage since 2008, and is witnessing high capacity utilisation since mid-2022. Funding of this capital expenditure will also be aided by the strong ratio of corporate cash flow from operations, which has been in the range of 1.5-2x in the last three years. This indicates that the private sector has generated sufficient cash flows to meet capital expenditure demands without raising its debt levels. As per analyst estimates, capital expenditure in emerging sectors such as semiconductors, electric vehicles (EVs), batteries, and solar modules is expected to increase eight times in the next four years compared to the last four years—much faster than a 1.3x increase in traditional sectors, highlighting the potential for more rapid growth in sectors that aid sustainable development.

Impetus on Climate Action

Climate change and its mitigation need immediate attention, and India is aware of the role it needs to play. India’s infrastructure development is not limited to expansion but also focussed on embracing new ‘green’ technologies in several sectors and increasing renewable capacity. As India advances its per-capita electricity consumption, the country will start migrating to levels seen in more developed nations. To this end, renewable capacity is projected to increase from 76 GW in 2018 to 500 GW by 2028, with two-thirds of all incremental energy supply expected to come from renewables. India already has the world’s fourth-largest renewable energy installed capacity. Further growth here will not only reduce its import dependence but also reduce inflation volatility and create new demand for solutions such as electric vehicles, cold storage chains, and green hydrogen-powered trucks and buses.

In the Union Budget 2024-25, the government announced the development of a taxonomy for climate finance to enhance the availability of capital for climate adaptation and mitigation. RBI published a framework for accepting green deposits in 2023 to promote and develop a sustainable financial ecosystem in India. These are initial and important steps for the financing of these sectors domestically and from global pools of capital.

Skilling: The Next Big Agenda

India’s large English-speaking population is an additional enabler of strong services exports. It already provides significant operations services, with such exports expected to touch $500 billion by 2030 with a 50% share of all global capability centres (GCCs). It is now aspiring to become a “factory to the world,” aided by PLI, and working on a transition to net zero.

India needs to continue to invest in human capital through its investment in productivity, health, and education to reap the full benefits of the demographic dividend. The government’s recent announcement in the Budget to incentivise skilling and job creation is a step in the right direction.

DPI a game changer

India has effectively harnessed its technological prowess to develop a robust digital public infrastructure to deliver public services at scale. The measure of payments that India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) processes in a day is unparalleled, and the country has built a technological foundation to deliver several public services digitally through this infrastructure—better known as the India Stack. Many economies have payment, identity, or authentication frameworks, but there are few that come close to India’s in terms of interoperability and sheer scale. The stack covers everything from KYC to payments to authentication, and as per the Bureau of International Settlements (BIS), this stack has enabled India to reach bank penetration in less than 10 years, which would otherwise have taken up to five decades.

There are many reasons to be bullish about India. The building blocks are in place to see 7-8% growth for a prolonged period; the focus should be on sustaining the momentum for India to achieve its goal of becoming a sustainable developed nation. I, for one, look forward to supporting and witnessing its progress.

Sheetal Devi, paralympian archer, captivates the world with a bull’s-eye in opening round

Team India's archer Sheetal Devi introduced herself to the world at the 2024 Paralympics in Paris by way of a perfect bull's-eye.

Devi, 17, is one of four armless archers competing at the Paralympics, and the only woman.

Team USA's Matt Stutzman, Belgium’s Piotr Van Montagu, Mexico’s Víctor Sardina Viveros do not have arms and use other body parts, like their feet, to load and fire a bow and arrow.

Devi has gone viral, with nearly 50 million views in one clip posted to X , for firing a bull’s-eye during the 1/8 elimination round of the women’s individual compound open event.

"Oh, what a start for Devi," the announcer said as the crowd roared.

Devi thanked the person who posted the clip.

"You’re the inspiration of billions of people now," the person responded. "May you always keep shining bright."

Responses to the clip have praised Devi, who went on to lose the round by a single point and was unable to advance to the quarterfinal.

Devi went on to win bronze along with Rakesh Kumar in the mixed compound archery event on Sept. 2.

She has other titles to her name. In 2023, she became the first female armless archer to win a medal at the Para World Championships, Olympics.com reported. She was also a gold medalist in at the Asian Para Games in 2023.

"Look how calm she is .. brilliantly done," one user wrote in response to a video of her bull’s-eye.

"Sheetal Devi is poetry in motion," another said.

"Pure bullseye! Absolutely impressive!!" a third added.

Devi was born without fully formed arms due to a rare congenital disorder called phocomelia that leads to underdeveloped limbs, Olympics.com reported.

She has been "athletically gifted" since childhood, per Olympics.com. She got into archery following a youth event organized by the Indian Army in 2021. Army coaches saw her "innate athleticism and confidence," the outlet reported.

U.S. archer Matt Stutzman, who was born without arms, has been a mentor to Devi, according to Paralympics.org.

“I want her to be successful,” Stutzman, who pioneered the technique Devi uses, told Paralympics.org.

Stutzman, who is at the 2024 Paralympics, also told the publication archers like Devi make him "OK" with the idea of retirement.

“I can retire now and be OK with everything. I’ve done really well, but the fact that we have other armless archers is way more important. It builds archery,” he said.
