WRITING WORKSHOPS: Inspired by Objects

May 1 @ 11:00 am - 1:00 pm utc+0.

creative writing workshop galway

Galway City Museum houses a wealth of treasures, ranging from the medieval relic of St Ursula to the earliest known Claddagh ring, each of which has its own fascinating life story. This Bealtaine Festival, the Museum invites people to attend a 5-week writing workshop led by award-winning poet and creative-writing facilitator Gerry Hanberry. Each week, Museum staff will share the story behind an object. Afterwards, Gerry Hanberry – in a friendly, relaxed and supportive atmosphere – will encourage participants to respond creatively to what they have encountered and will guide participants towards developing their responses in whatever format emerges, be it poetry, prose or reminiscence pieces inspired by the objects and their stories.

This creative writing workshop series is free of charge, but places are limited to advance booking is essential. Contact (091) 532460 or email [email protected]

N.B. The series is part of the Bealtaine Festival, which celebrates creativity in older people, but all are welcome to attend. Participants should be available to attend most of the sessions.  The first workshop commences on Wednesday 1 May 2024 and they will continue every Wednesday in May, ending on Wednesday 29 May 2024.

Mike McCormack | Creative Writing at University of Galway

This new course builds and expands on over a decade’s worth of experience in directing and fostering undergraduate talent specifically in Creative Writing at NUI Galway. It provides a unique opportunity for students with an aptitude and passion for literary expression, and in keeping with the principle that ‘writers learn to write by writing’, the emphasis throughout is on practice-based learning and experience.

You will study and practice all the major genres of Creative Writing: Fiction, Nonfiction, Poetry, Playwriting, Screenwriting. Within these broader genres, you will be helped discover, experiment with and strengthen your own individual strands of interest.

During the course, your developing concentration on your own creative practice is paralleled by a focus on the practical imperatives and industry requirements in the many established and emerging writing-related fields. From the very start during your first year, a speaker from the writing professions visits the class each week for discussions, Q & A and informal conversation. This will help you begin to actively engage with the everyday routines and rhythms of writing-related professionals of all kinds.

With your expanding knowledge of what it takes to write at a high level, by the end of second year you will be ready to embark on a third year that provides for a 100% focus on your personal Creative Writing project(s). By the end of this specialism year, students on the course have developed advanced drafts of, for instance, novels of various kinds, collections of stories and/or flash fiction, poetry collections, plays, screenplays, essay collections, podcast scripts. You decide on your creative direction and project focus for the year, and then we will engage with your ideas and provide the teaching, mentorship and all-in guidance to help you fulfil your vision for your work.

Then, as you complete your studies in English and one other subject during your fourth and final year, you will build further on your third-year project(s) through modules that concentrate on further professionalisation, publication planning, social and public platforms and the various ways now of getting yourself and your writing out there.

Galway Arts Centre is home to Fighting Words Galway. Established by Roddy Doyle and Sean Love in 2009, Fighting Words helps students to develop their writing skills and explore their love of writing. Workshops are created and run by volunteer writing tutors, who are trained in child protection and Garda vetted.

Fighting Words workshops are available to all Primary and Secondary schools throughout Galway City and County  every Friday  throughout the academic year. All classes from 1st class are facilitated. Each workshop facilitates a class of approx. 30 pupils. All tutoring is  free . Workshops can be delivered in-person or virtually.

Volunteers include professional writers, novelists, screen-writers, journalists, poets, aspiring writers, student teachers, retired teachers and many more people who are just keen to be involved in creative work.

Booking is essential To inquire about booking your class into one of these workshops email your interest to  [email protected]

FIGHTING WORDS WORKSHOPS FOR PRIMARY SCHOOL GROUPS Working together, with the help of our volunteer tutors, the children write an original story which they see being typed up onto a big projection screen as it is being written. The children decide on the characters and plot and go through the story together sentence by sentence, editing as they go. A volunteer artist is also on hand to provide illustrations. The class writes the first part of the story together as a group, then each child has the opportunity to write their own individual ending to the story, with the assistance and encouragement of our volunteer tutors.

FIGHTING WORDS WORKSHOPS FOR SECONDARY SCHOOL GROUPS Working together, with the help of our volunteer tutors, students spend the first part of the workshop working together, as a group, creating a story initially through role play and improvisation. They then work together, developing characters, setting and plot, adding dialogue and editing as they go. Each participant then has the opportunity to work on their own, individual pieces of writing, helped and encouraged by Fighting Words volunteer tutors.
