Kathy Bates is an Ambulance WOMAN, thank you very much.
I’ve seen plenty of movies about troubled relationships, but for whatever reason, seeing Kathy Bates’ personal and professional relationship with her husband fall apart in Ambulance Girl got to me. Imagine being happy with someone for 33 years and bam, suddenly you’re telling them you hate them to their face. That’s scary.
Ambulance Girl ’s tone is all over the place; you’ve got the aforementioned marriage drama and Kathy Bates singing gospel to a terminally ill AIDS patient on one end, and Kathy Bates falling into a pool and Kathy Bates dropping her heavy EMT bag on the foot of an already-injured old woman on the other end. Someone call 911, I think I have whiplash.

When I found out Kathy Bates directed a Lifetime Movie, you could’ve just about knocked me over with a feather. Then I found out it was about a middle aged woman dissatisfied with her career, dealing with cracks showing up in her marriage, who decides to become an EMT, and I was fascinated.
It does have a lot of tonal shifts because there’s a lot going on, but it is surprisingly heartwarming. I don’t think we see a lot of movies about people completely pivoting their lives to something new, and also doubting themselves the whole time. This just doesn’t fit within the framework of the American Dream.
This felt very real, though. Except for that moment where Kathy sings…

Throughout his entire adult life my father was always involved with the local fire department wherever we lived -- usually as a firefighter except for some small periods where life did not allow that commitment. So part of this really resonated with me -- the alarms going off, the camaraderie of the crews, the stress it has on the family, etc. And I LOVE Kathy Bates but this movie is very dry and outside of Bates none of the characters have any real backstory or depth. And her husband was a major asshole.

I’m finally watching something off of my watchlist! I love Kathy Bates.
While the film frequently uses some unfortunate video transitions, it’s actually pretty “good” for a Lifetime movie, though not exactly a good Lifetime movie. It has the hook of a Hallmark movie, but it’s too horny and thematic for that channel. Of the two, Lifetime makes more sense, but it still feels like it belongs elsewhere.
This is a fabulous Kathy Bates performance. As a director, she clearly knows herself! Some moments genuinely touched me and quite a few made me LOL.
But again, this is supposed to be Lifetime... Kathy Bates has too much of an understanding of humans’ neuroses and complex relationships with one another. (And…

Kathy Bates saying “I try very hard not to vomit” was extremely relatable!
Kathy is also very horny for firefighters and I’m glad this film let her explore that passion. 🔥💦👀

I'm always down to watch any movie, starring Kathy Bates but this one was only good for a one-time watch.

I wish I had NEVER heard that story about that mare in heat….. why the hell was that included😭
Minus 100 stars for that but plus 102 stars for the spellbinding delivery of “Don’t do that! Don’t cut his leathers!” so that leaves us at a 2 👍

‘Ambulance Girl’ based on real life
Academy Award winner Kathy Bates (“Misery”) directs and stars in “Ambulance Girl” (9 p.m., Lifetime), an intelligent if flawed drama about a middle-aged woman who challenges her inner demons and becomes a happier and more fulfilled person, only to discover that her healthy changes may imperil her not-so-stable marriage.
It also happens to be based on a true story by Jane Stern, half of the best-selling writing team of Jane and Michael Stern.
For three decades, the Sterns have written acclaimed books about food, roadside America and popular culture. But Michael’s (Robin Thomas) recent recovery from alcoholism and his frequent attendance at AA meetings make Jane (Bates) feel alone and depressed. She had grown used to (dare we say co-dependent?) on his weakness, and her role as his caregiver had consumed and defined her life.
After a period of self-pity, Jane decides to give of herself and joins her local ambulance corps. This part of the movie is both the most predictable and most rewarding. Suddenly a woman who had been known only for her wit, irony and neuroses has to become strong and selfless.
She learns to cope with burning buildings, grievous wounds and physical danger. And she grows to love hanging out with the firemen and EMT squads, regular folks who don’t know her as a famous author.
But soon Michael begins to feel excluded. He chides her for neglecting their writing work and fears that he’s losing his partner.
Unlike most Lifetime movies that focus on a woman wronged or a divorced wife getting her groove back, “Ambulance” tries to show how a couple struggles to save a lifelong friendship and a 30-year marriage. And that’s a tall order for any movie.
The film places so much emphasis on Jane that it’s a little hard to understand or sympathize with Michael’s problems. In fact, he comes off as an ex-drunk who has “self-actualized” into a cranky jerk.
The film would be easier to take if it stuck to Lifetime cliches and Michael ran off with a younger woman while Jane spent the next 15 minutes brooding before ending up with a ladder captain and living happily ever after. But the problems presented here are based on a real marriage and are therefore a little more complicated.
And “Ambulance” deserves credit for its honesty and ambition, even if we never entirely understand why this marriage should be saved.

AMBULANCE GIRL
How i saved myself by becoming an emt.
by Jane Stern ‧ RELEASE DATE: June 1, 2003
Funny yet moving, a midlife crisis tale with all the elements of a TV movie of the week.
A witty, self-deprecating account of how becoming a volunteer emergency medical technician transformed a reclusive, depressed hypochondriac into a vibrant whole woman.
Co-author with husband Michael of numerous books on food and pop culture ( Dog Eat Dog , 1997, etc.), a columnist for Gourmet magazine, and a contributor to NPR’s The Splendid Table , Stern at age 52 appeared to be a woman of accomplishment. She describes herself, though, as clinically depressed, claustrophobic, and floored by panic attacks. Her decision to become an EMT was, she says, a spur-of-the-moment act, taken after a couple of months of psychotherapy and treatment with antidepressants. It also seems driven by the desire of this urbane, well-traveled outsider to become an accepted part of her largely blue-collar New England community. During months of thrice-a-week classes, mostly with fit young firemen and police trainees, overweight, overage, and overeducated Stern struggled hard to fit in, at times losing her dignity, but not her sense of humor. Once certified as an EMT, she faces some real-life tests. The claustrophobic writer dreads riding in the back of the ambulance, but of course she must, and with a couple of drunken, bleeding motorcyclists to care for she doesn’t have time to be afraid. Her fear of dead people is challenged when she is confronted with her first corpse: fat, naked, blue, and covered with Cheerios. And on it goes, through fires, accidents, and domestic crises, until the day Stern sees someone she knows become a virtual vegetable after an EMT rescue. Questioning the value of heroic saves, she begins again to sink into depression, coming out of her funk only after the events of 9/11 make her see rescue workers as a noble brotherhood. In the end, she achieves her goal and closes her account of self-transformation with the joyous announcement: “I am a part of something at last.”

Elie Wiesel spent his early years in a small Transylvanian town as one of four children.
He was the only one of the family to survive what Francois Maurois, in his introduction, calls the "human holocaust" of the persecution of the Jews, which began with the restrictions, the singularization of the yellow star, the enclosure within the ghetto, and went on to the mass deportations to the ovens of Auschwitz and Buchenwald. There are unforgettable and horrifying scenes here in this spare and sombre memoir of this experience of the hanging of a child, of his first farewell with his father who leaves him an inheritance of a knife and a spoon, and of his last goodbye at Buchenwald his father's corpse is already cold let alone the long months of survival under unconscionable conditions.

INTO THE WILD
by Jon Krakauer ‧ RELEASE DATE: Jan. 1, 1996
A wonderful page-turner written with humility, immediacy, and great style. Nothing came cheap and easy to McCandless, nor...
The excruciating story of a young man on a quest for knowledge and experience, a search that eventually cooked his goose, told with the flair of a seasoned investigative reporter by Outside magazine contributing editor Krakauer (Eiger Dreams, 1990).
Chris McCandless loved the road, the unadorned life, the Tolstoyan call to asceticism. After graduating college, he took off on another of his long destinationless journeys, this time cutting all contact with his family and changing his name to Alex Supertramp. He was a gent of strong opinions, and he shared them with those he met: "You must lose your inclination for monotonous security and adopt a helter-skelter style of life''; "be nomadic.'' Ultimately, in 1992, his terms got him into mortal trouble when he ran up against something—the Alaskan wild—that didn't give a hoot about Supertramp's worldview; his decomposed corpse was found 16 weeks after he entered the bush. Many people felt McCandless was just a hubris-laden jerk with a death wish (he had discarded his map before going into the wild and brought no food but a bag of rice). Krakauer thought not. Admitting an interest that bordered on obsession, he dug deep into McCandless's life. He found a willful, reckless, moody boyhood; an ugly little secret that sundered the relationship between father and son; a moral absolutism that agitated the young man's soul and drove him to extremes; but he was no more a nutcase than other pilgrims. Writing in supple, electric prose, Krakauer tries to make sense of McCandless (while scrupulously avoiding off-the-rack psychoanalysis): his risky behavior and the rites associated with it, his asceticism, his love of wide open spaces, the flights of his soul.
