Writing research papers and essays or creating presentations is one of many steps to train you to be a functioning adult in your community. Because of this, you need to make an effort to be aware of current changes and trends. How to Write an Essay on Social Issues

Your professor or teacher will ask you to look for interesting social issues essay topics or problem solution essay topics for your upcoming assignment as part of your course work. Such assignments allow teens and young adults to express their opinions about the trendiest topics of 2024. Your classroom is a safe environment where you can discuss your thoughts without being judged; this is a chance you shouldn’t waste.

To write a perfect essay, follow these steps:

  • Choose Your Topic Wisely.

Choosing a relevant 2024 social problem topic will pay off. It should cause some controversy and keep your audience interested. You could also easily research it to find enough evidence and proof to support your ideas. Check with your teacher or professor to ensure your topic is acceptable for 2024 and that it can be discussed at school or college.

To help you find a relevant topic, try searching trending hashtags of 2024 on media platforms or check your daily newspaper for news. Pay attention to international news as well. This is a good way to understand what is going on in different parts of the world and how it affects Americans living in the States.

Some relevant global social problems include income inequality (poverty), corruption, the rise in authoritarianism (erosion of democratic values), criminality, unsustainable development, and bullying in schools.

  • Spend Time on Research

You should always look for academically proven and reliable sources that you can cite in your essay. Listing your opinions without sufficient logical support from outside sources is unacceptable.

Some students simply rely on the media for examples to include in their tasks. It is risky because the world of the media industry is affected by political influence and can be biased. It is recommended to rely on academically approved sources to find relevant examples.

  • Support Your Opinion with Examples

Stay attentive to find relevant examples. Since you are discussing a current social topic, relevant examples are often readily available. Use examples to support your opinion and explain it. They can help make your point relatable and easier to understand.

What Are the Social Issues of Today? Top 12 Issues

As we live through the global pandemic, natural disasters worldwide, conversion to safe energy sources, and COVID-19 challenges, the list of relevant social issues in 2024 have also changed. Here are the top 12 social issues with relevant topics that you may consider for your essay:

  • COVID-19 & Global Pandemic . Without a doubt, almost every sector of modern life has been affected by the global pandemic restrictions and the rules of social distancing. Even though countries seem to return to normal life, logistics and international trading still need to be enhanced. As an example of social topics dealing with this issue, consider writing about how the COVID-19 crisis affected a company or the entire industry.
  • The Black Lives Matter Social Movement . It is hard to find anything that has marked the last two years regarding social importance. The Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement has captured the entire world because the issues of racial prejudice are relevant as ever. Regarding possible topics, you can compare the BLM movement with the student protests in the 1970s or the Montgomery Bus Station protest.
  • Green Energy Conversion. This social issue is mostly related to environmental problems, yet global conferences are dedicated to finding safe ways to convert all available energy to safe methods. Consider writing about the latest innovations in the solar energy sector and talk about wind turbines if you are majoring in Electrical Engineering. At the same time, you can write about school education and educating youngsters about our environment.
  • The Presence of the U.S. Military Troops in Afghanistan . It is a sensitive social issue in the United States, as President Biden has announced that troops leaving Afghanistan in 2021. This social topic is quite important as it is not only a political issue but also a matter of national security.
  • The Challenges of Remote Education. As we are making it through yet another year of distance learning with Skype and Zoom solutions for video conferences, the challenges of modern learning are evident. Consider writing about how the student habits and attitudes have changed in 2024 and think about what pros and cons of this issue you can explore.
  • Arctic Pole Environmental Situation . The Arctic Pole Ice Shield is a social issue that became apparent as explorers and scientists from all fields of science started to reveal updated information. Regardless of your college course, you can approach this social issue through the prism of environmental protection, political bias, economics, marketing, and even the logistics that are also present in this sector.
  • Global Pandemic & Vaccination . The subject of vaccination might be among the most discussed social issues today, yet it does not make it to the list of immediate issues because of the political games at play. For example, you can write about unequal distributions of vaccines to certain countries and investigate how politics manipulate this sensitive matter.
  • Travel Restrictions . As the warm times are coming closer, most people think about traveling. Consider some business trips even if you are not up for leisure. Though the list of restrictions is changing all the time, and the number of countries that accept tourists without any limits is constantly growing compared to 2022, this issue is still discussed in 2024, which makes it a relevant social issue. Consider writing about new safety regulations and researching how COVID-19 has affected our travel routines and rules.
  • Global Unemployment Peak . According to various statistics, the unemployment peak in April 2021 reached over 12.7% in the United States. The same thing will happen all over the world in 2024. You can write about the reasons for such a situation and discuss the presence of freelance specialists and people working remotely as an option.
  • Supply Chain Diversification in Post COVID-19 Society . Undoubtedly, the most affected sector is the field of supply chain distribution. Diversification has become an issue since people who are limited in funds or face certain healthcare issues need proper help. You can choose an issue in your local community or write about why such a situation became possible.
  • Increasing Political Polarization . Just remember to stay respectful as you write about politics. Regardless of your preferences and beliefs, it is hard to ignore an increasing political polarization, representing another social issue in 2024. You can consider writing about Russia and its external politics, India and the distribution of vaccines, or the United States with the latest political changes and innovations.
  • Healthcare Bias in Modern Society . Unfortunately, this social problem became even more apparent in 2024 as the vaccinated people received more social rights. Still, only some people all over the world can become vaccinated. At the same time, one should consider writing about other illnesses and healthcare specialists that are not precisely related to respiratory diseases. Consider it as one of the starting points as you write about healthcare bias social issues.

Of course, you may also consider the problem of evolving employee benefits or how people receive various labor compensation or become fired for no reason. Meanwhile, think about the media sector and the challenges of actors and musicians who are currently left without the means to represent their art. Choose something that inspires you and explain why it is important.

64 Examples of Social Issues Topics for 2024

May 21, 2024

Writing assignments asking students to engage with social justice/social issues topics target skills vitally important to success in college and beyond. They require writers to demonstrate critical, ethical, and dynamic thinking around demanding topics that present no quick and easy solution. Often, they will call for some amount of research, building textual and media literacy and awareness of the research process. In other words, these kinds of essays can be valuable in teaching students how to think and learn for themselves. But another, underappreciated learning outcome of these essays has to do with their function as communication.

This last feature can be easy to overlook in the context of writing assignments. Questions of audience, authority, and impact seem less significant when you know your teacher must read your essay. However, taking these questions seriously can not only enhance your odds of writing an excellent essay, but could also foster skills instrumental to real-world writing situations.

This article provides a list of social justice topics carefully selected to demonstrate the range and scale of available subjects. It also explains how you might approach writing about these issues with an eye for defining them and understanding the audience. Identifying a great topic that interests you enough to write about is an important early step. But what’s equally or even more important is to understand how to write about it clearly, directly, and persuasively.

How to Write a Successful Essay Grappling with Social Issues Topics

Writing about social issues topics is best improved through asking questions about purpose, context, and outcome. Why this topic and not another? Who is the audience, what do they know, and where might they stand on an issue? What are the typical ways others address the issue? What knowledge, perspective, or plan of action has been missing from that conversation? Why is this topic important to think about? Why is this essay important to read? These questions are crucial to delimiting which social justice topics to focus on and the strategy for writing about them. Answering them in the process of selecting a topic and developing a writing plan can help achieve the following components of good essays:

1) Defining the Issue

A frequent problem with student writing involves tackling questions or issues that are overly broad or vaguely defined. When selecting from social issues topics, it’s actually a smart strategy to think small. Rather than purporting to solve world peace, essays work better when drilling down into more localized and easily defined issues. This will help to communicate clearly what the issue is, convince the reader of its relevance, and successfully indicate that a short piece of writing could meaningfully contribute to the conversation around the issue.

2) Finding and Using Evidence

In many cases, essays on social issues topics will require some amount of research. When incorporating secondary evidence, it’s vital to find sources that are relevant to the topic and signal their credibility. However, even if research is not formally required, it can help toward establishing the purpose of a piece of writing within a larger discussion. Looking toward how others typically address an issue can help toward understanding whether an essay should aim to fill a gap in knowledge, supply a missing perspective, or outline actions that have not been proposed.

Successful Essay Grappling with Social Issues Topics (Cont.)

3) understanding audience.

Student essayists are not overly incentivized to think about questions of audience. However, understanding audience can help toward both defining an issue and acknowledging the purpose of writing. The most important thing to reflect on is the audience’s reason for reading a piece of writing. Why should they care about this social issue and what the essay will say about it? Understanding the reason for reading will help toward envisioning the ideal reader. Then, the essay’s language and arguments can be tailored to what that ideal reader already knows about the topic and their likely attitudes and beliefs.

4) Making an argument

This step follows the others and builds upon each. After clearly defining an issue that is appropriate in scope, an essay should clearly state its purpose or position. It should then interpret relevant evidence to support that position or fulfill its purpose. Then, it should aim to convince the audience by organizing evidence and reasoning into paragraphs structured around topic sentences that support the purpose or position. As these steps make clear, the argument is the essay. Making an argument entails justifying the act of writing itself, as well as the reader’s decision to follow the writer in focusing on an issue from a unique vantage point.

The following list of examples indicates some of the range of social issue essay topics. When considering these or other examples, writers should consider how they can foster purposive essays that understand how they are entering and changing the conversation around the issue.

  • Philosophies about the conflict between ideals of multicultural openness and respect for cultural differences.

Final Thoughts – Social Issues Topics

The above social justice topics provide a sense of the large range of urgent issues an essay might topic. However, it’s best to reflect on how a piece of writing can define an issue so as to make clear that it is capable of doing something meaningful with it. That could entail looking for similar, more niche issues to address. Or it could mean deeper thought about an issue for which the writer anticipates they could provide missing information, perspectives, or plans of action. While many readers care about many topics, it’s vital to understand how an essay can create a tangible relationship with an ideal reader. Only then can a writer spur others to think or act in novel and potentially transformative ways.

If you’re looking for good topics for presentations, you’ve landed on the right page. In this article, you’ll find plenty of good presentation topics, tips on choosing the most suitable presentation topic for you, and essential design elements to make your presentation a success.

Many factors go into an excellent presentation. You need to have confident body language and engage your audience to hold their attention. You also need eye-catching visual aids like images, data visualizations, GIFs, and others (all of which you can find in Prezi ), not to mention a great opening to grab attention and a strong closing line to stay memorable. However, the most essential aspect of your presentation is the topic. It’s the core of your presentation, so it has to be strong, insightful, attention-grabbing, and appealing to yourself and your audience in order to evolve into a successful presentation everyone will love.

How to choose a good presentation topic

There are millions of topics you could create a presentation on, but what defines a good presentation topic? If you’re struggling to either come up with a good topic for a presentation or you can’t decide between multiple ones, here are a few questions you should ask yourself before choosing a topic.

What’s the goal of your presentation?

When you’re choosing a presentation topic, consider the meaning behind it. Ask yourself what the purpose of talking about this topic is, and what you want to say about it. Whatever topic you choose to present, the conclusion needs to provide a takeaway or lesson you want to communicate to your audience. A meaningful goal will make your presentation more memorable.

Are you interested in the topic?

If you’re not interested in the presentation topic, others won’t be curious either. Interest, enthusiasm, and passion enrich your presentation and are noticeable when presenting. Interest shines through and inspires others to find the topic as fascinating as you do. Think about the last time you saw someone sharing something they were passionate about – their excitement drew people in to pay closer attention to what they were saying.

When choosing a topic, you need to find it or a particular angle of it interesting for yourself. For example, perhaps you’re not a pop music enthusiast, but you’re passionate about studying cultural phenomena. In this case, you can talk about pop music’s influence on early 2000s youth culture.

Will your audience find this topic relatable?

While you have to find the topic you’re presenting interesting, you also have to think about your audience. When choosing a subject, consider your audience’s background in terms of demographics, interests, culture, and knowledge level about the topic. Think about what others will find fascinating and relevant, so they’re not bored or confused during your presentation.

Do you have prior experience or knowledge about this topic?

Personal experiences are always great to share in a presentation, providing your unique perspective for anyone listening. While you can easily prepare your presentation based on a quick Google search, it won’t make the same lasting impact on your audience. Choose a presentation topic you have some prior knowledge about, or have an interesting opinion you can share with others. It’ll make your presentation more engaging and memorable.

How to create a good presentation

If you know what you want to present on, it’s time to create an impactful presentation that grabs everyone’s attention. Presentation design plays a crucial role in how your presentation is received and remembered. To stand out and leave a memorable impact on your audience, create a Prezi presentation. Instead of a linear, slide-based presentation, offer an engaging and dynamic storytelling experience to your audience. Breathe life into your presentation with motion, zoom, and spatial relationships. When creating your presentation, consider the following three essential elements:

Visuals play a significant part in presentation design. They evoke emotions, make a memorable impact, and give more context to the story. Not to mention, 65% of people are visual learners , so visual aids are helpful when explaining a complex topic.

In your presentation, include different types of visuals, such as images, videos, GIFs, and stickers, all of which you can find in Prezi’s content library. When selecting your visuals, consider what’s relevant and brings additional value to the story. Only add what’s meaningful and necessary. A video or image at the right place and time will enrich the viewing experience and make your presentation more memorable.

The layout of your presentation is the structure of your story. It’ll help you introduce the topic, intrigue your audience, and unfold the layers of your topic one by one until you disclose your main arguments and summarize the presentation. A good presentation layout has a hierarchical, chronological, or logical flow that leads the viewer from start to finish.

If you’re creating a Prezi presentation, you can create a dynamic storytelling experience by experimenting with your layout. Instead of going from slide to slide, you can zoom in and out of topics and experiment with different shapes, animations, and effects that draw the viewer into your story world. Here’s an example of a Prezi presentation with a great storytelling layout:

Data visualizations can elevate your presentation from being a good one to a great one. By providing data behind your arguments, you’ll appear more trustworthy and confident in your audience’s eyes.

Add charts, graphs, interactive maps, and more to your presentations with Prezi Design. You can choose from a wide selection of charts and maps to illustrate your data. With interactive elements, you’ll be able to engage your audience and make a memorable impact.

Engaging visuals, a well-structured layout, and relevant data visualizations will provide a great starting base to create a memorable presentation. Discover other tips and tricks that make your presentation effective and capture people’s attention.

Social Emotional Learning Blog Series: Social Awareness

social awareness presentation topics

For the 3rd installment of the social emotional competency series we are going to explore social awareness.  The last two topics,  self-awareness and self-management , looked inward.  Social awareness is all about looking outward at the world around us.

Social awareness is always a necessary skill to have, as it addresses many of the social issues experienced in schools and the larger world.  Racism, homophobia, sexism, ableism, and other injustices and prejudices are very real problems experienced by students and educators. Social-awareness education is one piece that plays a role in combating them all.

A common thread to all social issues is that they deserve respect, acknowledgement, and appreciation. Social awareness promotes these things and teaches people how to show respect, appreciation, equality, and more.  Let’s look closer at how this competency is a great tool to address all of these issues.

What is Social Awareness

CASEL defines social-awareness as the ability to understand other perspectives and show empathy with others which includes individuals from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and contexts.

When put into action people have compassion and respect for others, openness towards social norms across cultures, and the ability to see things from different points of view.  People also see strengths, are concerned about others’ feelings and recognize influences of behaviors across settings.

To sum it all up, social-awareness is the path to follow when it comes to understanding others around us, especially those who have differences from ourselves and treat others with care, kindness, and respect no matter how different or alike we are.

Why is Social Awareness Important in the Classroom?

While there’s no one-step cure to bias, prejudice, and blatant hate, social awareness is an important starting point for the immense amount of work that needs to be done. Understanding differences, appreciating diversity, being respectful with others, realizing how what you do affects others and extending a caring hand to those who get mistreated are the starting points of social justice. A fight for social justice can be built upon those skills.

Social awareness educates people to look outside of themselves and realize it takes many people to make the world go around. It teaches people to put down their biases and assumptions on how the world works or should work. It opens up their eyes to seeing many perspectives and learning how to co-exist with an endless variety of individuals.

Social-awareness is a teachable concept, and when used in the classroom students can start leaving their positive mark on their world.

Benefits of Social Awareness for Students and the Classroom

When taught how to be aware of those around them, students can grasp the concept of treating others with kindness, practicing empathy, and standing up for others.  When they are instilled with this value at a young age, children are given the tools to examine prejudices and bias as they grow.

Teaching things like different cultural norms will help kids see that people from all cultures have great things to share.  Learning about different family structures gives kids a new perspective on the definition of a family.  Introducing skills like empathy and compassion teach students to value others and treat everyone with respect.

Oftentimes young children only see the world from their point of view.  Developmentally it’s natural to be egocentric, that is to only think of yourself.  Social-awareness helps kids get out of this rut and see things like how their actions affect others.  They can learn basic skills to play fairly. They can resolve conflict by seeing a situation from someone else’s point of view.

Having a socially aware classroom helps students develop attitudes like… Pink isn’t just for girls. I can be friends with someone who doesn’t look or act like me. All skin colors are beautiful. I can be accepting and loving towards any sexual orientation. I can have empathy for a student with a disability. My experience isn’t the only one.

Social-awareness creates a nurturing, accepting, and supportive environment in the classroom.

Social Awareness for Teachers

social awareness presentation topics

For students to effectively learn about social-awareness it is necessary that their teacher is socially aware, too. Adults form their own opinions and biases and can easily get caught up in their own perspective, too.

Working on our own social-awareness however can support our efforts in trying to create an inclusive classroom. It is vital that we become aware of the diversity within our classrooms and constantly reflect on our role in making the classroom equitable for all students. It is important to work to understand each student.

You might be able to look back at your school years and recall kids who were “teachers favorite.”  Or maybe you experienced being misunderstood by a teacher or unfairly disciplined.  These things still happen today. However when educators are truly socially aware they are better able to treat everyone fairly.

Let’s take a quick look at this graphic defining 3 key terms that can guide social awareness in our classroom. These are 3 of the outcomes we should strive for while creating a socially aware classroom.

social-awareness

How Can Teachers Use Their Social-Awareness to Improve the Environment of the Classroom?

An important skill to develop is see situations from your student’s perspective.  As adults we tend to look at everything from a grown-up point of view laced with our own personal experiences, biases, and views. The same goes for working to understand your students’ parents’ perspectives. Take time to understand and appreciate these perspectives.

Be mindful of your student’s culture, ability or homelife because those influences shape your class.  When we are empathic with our students we can extend compassion to them.

Educate yourself and your students.

Read books, articles, or listen to podcast that outline issues students may be facing and common inequities in schools, so that you can be more aware of how your actions or your colleagues’ actions may be impacting students. Immerse yourself in tv, movies, books, podcasts, ect. with people who reflect your students. Ask questions. Immerse yourself in the community of your students. Work towards gaining a deeper understanding of who they are and what they need.

Expose students to texts that include characters from all backgrounds. Students should see themselves reflected in texts, and they should also see people different from themselves in texts to develop empathy and examine different points of view.

Practice & model empathy & compassion.

Compassion greatly helps us show respect and kindness.  It gives us patience too.  Just think of a time you felt exasperated with a challenging student, it’s easy to get impatient with them.  However with empathy we can recall what shapes their behavior and be compassionate towards them.  Like, “Oh yeah they are going through (fill in the blank) and it’s understandable why they are this way.  I will be sure to do (fill in the blank) so we can have a good outcome.”

With compassion then comes a willingness to work your class rather than against it.  It’s not uncommon for adults to get into power-struggles with youth.  Adults want to be in charge or feel the need to manage a certain way or enforce rules.  While these might be good intentions to maintain a safe and teachable environment, being an authoritarian ruling over a class might not be the best approach.  This is where power struggles come into play and begins the dynamic to work against others rather than with them.

Build a foundation of respect.

respect-in-the-classroom

It is important to not just expect respect from students, but to show respect to your students too. When teachers show respect to their students, more than likely students will feel valued and return the respect. When respect is established more than likely you’ll find a classroom that works as a team and collaborates.  From resolving conflicts, to group projects, to sharing ideas, you’ll be able to work together which is much more pleasant.

Strategies for Teaching Social Awareness

social awareness presentation topics

So how do you teach social-awareness to your class?  Here are some strategies that focus on empathy, compassion, social justice and team-work.

"How Would You Handle..." Scenarios

For this activity students can discuss different ways to be empathetic towards different scenarios.  You can create your own to better fit your class or try out the following suggestions:

  • Your classmate was called an inappropriate name based on their skin color
  • A classmate that has a physical disability is always picked last to play kickball at recess
  • Your friend makes fun of LGBTQ+ and avoids anyone who identifies that way
  • During group time you think only boys can be the team leader and not girls

You can present the scenarios either by writing them up on the board or holding up a picture that illustrates the scenario as you read it outloud to the class.  Then ask the following questions for class discussion:

  • What is it like to be in their shoes when they are treated that way?
  • Why do you think one person treats the other person that way?
  • How would you handle the situation?  What would you say to the person being mistreated and the person who performed the action?

Be sure to give and define specific names for each example, like racism, sexism, ableism, homophobia, etc.

Examine social justice in the news.

Present students with age-appropriate news articles covering current events relating to social justice.

  • Ask students to reflect on the event and express how it makes them feel.
  • Have students work in groups to come up with an action plan regarding the issues.
  • Have students share how they can relate, or not, to the event.

Acts of Kindness Gallery Walk

For this activity students will talk about acts of compassion and then draw a picture about it.  Hang the pictures up and have a gallery walk for all to see.

  • Start the activity by generating a list of acts of kindness or compassion.  Examples can be things like, helping someone pick-up, waiting for someone who is late for recess, letting someone go first, giving a compliment, standing up for someone who is being bullied
  • Let students pick an act of kindness from the list and have them draw a picture showing the compassionate act
  • Hang pictures up around the room
  • Divide the class in half so each artist stands next to their picture and the other half walks around the room looking at the artwork.
  • The art observers then give the artist one compliment on their drawing
  • Switch groups for observing artwork and giving compliments

Culture Projects

Give all students a chance to share and celebrate their own culture. There are a lot of ways to do this, from extensive projects to having students simply share stories or draw pictures of something that is part of their culture or traditions. Focus on how each one brings value to the class as a whole.

The burdens of social issues facing many students are heavy.  It can be overwhelming trying to figure out how to tackle the multitude of problems. Social-awareness education acts as a base for addressing many of these issues.  Teaching awareness, understanding, empathy, compassion and working together is a valuable piece of the fight towards equality and justice. Remember, this is just a small piece of the puzzle.

I enjoyed reading about the different components of Social-emotional awareness. Many people think that is just a state of mind that can be easily taken care of. After this whole lock down Covid situation that we have gone through I feel that students lost a sense of socializing through normal face-to-face talk. I remember sitting in a restaurant with my family and noticing that the environment was so quiet. I looked at other tables and noticed families sitting together but their eyes were glued to some sort of electronic device down to the little kids on their highchairs. It is sad to see how much we have to touch with the simple things as just being in the moment and talking to one another.

How To Improve Your Social Awareness (With Examples)

We’ve all had times when we’ve misread a social situation or misjudged how someone else will react to something. For some, these are rare occurrences, but others feel that they lack social awareness most or all of the time.

If you have low social awareness, you might feel like you rarely understand social situations, that you often say the wrong thing, or that you don’t understand why people react badly to things. [ 1 ]

You can improve your social awareness with practice. The great thing about working on your social awareness is that it will probably help to improve all of your other social and relationship skills as well.

What is social awareness?

How to improve social awareness, why is social awareness important, do i have low social awareness, can social awareness be developed.

Before working on social awareness, it’s helpful to have a definition:

Social awareness is the ability to recognize and accurately interpret social situations.

This is entirely about understanding the social world, not interacting with it. Social awareness is a precursor to being socially adept and a core component of emotional intelligence . [ 2 ] You need to recognize how people feel before you can decide on your response.

Knowing that social awareness develops throughout our lives is good news if you’re struggling with it. You have loads of opportunities to improve. You just need a good strategy. Here are some steps to increase your social awareness.

1. Pay attention

Increase your social awareness by paying attention. This can be difficult if you’re not sure exactly what to pay attention to. Start by seeing what you naturally notice.

Trying to pay attention to all social information at once can be overwhelming, so try to focus on one area at a time. You could try focusing on tone of voice first and then try facial expressions as well. As you get used to “reading” each aspect, it will take less effort, and you can think about a new aspect of social awareness.

2. Be an active listener

Although subtle social cues are important, paying attention to what the other person is saying is also part of improving your social awareness. Don’t get so focused on subtle cues that you miss what they’re actually saying; otherwise, you may come across as disinterested.

Active listening is when you’re giving the other person all of your attention and showing it. [ 3 ] Try paraphrasing what they’ve said to check that you’ve understood correctly. We have more ideas of active listening in our article on how to be a better listener .

3. Pause to read the room

When you enter a new social situation, for example, when walking into a bar, pause for a moment to try to “read the room.” Don’t worry if you can’t pay attention to everything. Even if you only pick up one or two things, it can help.

You can try to pick up on

  • Who is grouped together
  • The overall energy level
  • Areas of high or low energy
  • Whether people are moving between groups
  • A generally positive or negative mood
  • Whether people are mostly formal or relaxed
  • Who are the key people

This can be most valuable when you first come into a room, but you can repeat this check periodically. You’re trying to keep your finger on the pulse of the social situation. As you become more practiced, you’ll notice these things without thinking.

4. Practice reading body language

An ability to read body language is essential to picking up on social cues. There are so many body language signs, and we don’t have space to go through them in detail here. There are great resources  here to kick-start your understanding.

The best way to get better at reading body language is by practicing. Try to notice how the people around you are standing or moving and what that tells you about them.

Don’t expect yourself to notice everything straight away. Start by looking for general impressions, such as “confident,” “happy,” or “angry.” As you get more experienced, you will become better at understanding the messages people are giving out.

5. Practice reading facial expressions

Facial expressions are a key part of body language. Although some facial expressions seem to be universally understood, there are lots of details that can help you to understand more subtle distinctions between expressions. [ 4 ]

Here is a good resource to help you understand facial expressions: VeryWellMind on facial expressions

6. Understand tones of voice

Tones of voice can also tell us as much as body language about the social situation we’re in.

Some tones of voice are obvious, such as when someone is furious or when they are crying. Others are subtle. Understanding them is difficult because everyone has a different voice, and what might be a sign of anger from one person might be normal for another.

Rather than trying to learn abstract “rules” for what a tone of voice means, try to notice differences in people’s voices based on their emotions. You might notice that your parents’ voices get faster and louder when they’re angry, but your partner gets quieter and slower, for example.

7. Notice when people are being polite

Many people struggle to tell when someone really means something and when they are just being polite. It’s frustrating when others aren’t completely honest. That’s valid. But it can be helpful to recognize when someone is likely to be just being polite, and why.

When someone is just being polite, their non-verbal communication won’t match their words. [ 5 ] For example, if you ask someone at work for help with a project, pay attention to their tone of voice and body language when they reply.

If they give a sigh, slowly turn towards you, avoid eye contact, and hunch their shoulders, they’re probably only agreeing because they feel they have to. If they smile, look directly at you, sound excited, and ask questions, their “yes” is probably genuine.

8. Understand why people say things to “be polite”

People tell “social lies” for different reasons. When you understand why someone might choose politeness over honesty, you can spot when it happens.

Often, they don’t want to make you uncomfortable or come across as selfish or unkind. For example, if you ask whether someone likes your shoes, they might say yes to avoid making you feel bad.

Try not to get frustrated with people for being polite. Remind yourself that they are probably trying to be kind.

9. Look for other people who lack social awareness

Understand how a lack of social awareness comes across to others by noticing other people who struggle with it. When you realize that someone else misses social cues, ask yourself how you can tell. This gives you real-life examples to help boost your awareness.

Sitcoms and romcoms often have a clueless character who struggles socially. These tend to be quite exaggerated and can be a good starting point for you. Try watching one with a trusted friend and talking about the cues the characters are missing.

10. Put yourself in someone else’s shoes

Empathy is the ability to feel what someone else is feeling. It lets you make an educated guess about other people’s thoughts and feelings. Once you better understand what other people might be feeling, you can understand their social cues.

Studies suggest that reading fiction can improve your empathy. [ 6 ] The more fiction we read, the more we become interested in how others understand the world. We experience viewpoints other than our own.

Try to collect stories (by reading or from conversations) and think about how the people involved feel emotionally. Ask whether you would feel the same. You might have a different response. That’s great. Ask yourself why you would feel differently.

For example, a character might feel stressed at the thought of making dinner for their family, whilst you wouldn’t feel worried at all. You might realize that your family would be supportive, while the character has very critical parents, and their efforts won’t be seen as good enough.

Once you understand the differences, ask what it would mean to feel like the character. Imagine having such critical parents. What else would become scary?

11. Improve your self-awareness

It’s difficult to improve social awareness without improving self-awareness . Being more aware of yourself gives you the core knowledge you need to be able to understand others.

Journaling is a great way to improve your self-awareness. [ 7 ] Try setting aside time every day to write down your thoughts and feelings. If writing doesn’t work for you, try using art or meditation to help you get in touch with your own emotions. [ 8 ]

12. Think about how you communicate to others

Understand other people by thinking about how you appear to others. Think about when you’re happy. What does that do to your body language? To your voice? What about when you’re sad or excited?

If you’re not sure how you appear, try videoing yourself and watching it back. Ask what clues others might pick up on. This can help you understand clues other people are displaying.

Don’t worry if this is difficult. Often people who are socially anxious try not to show their feelings. If you realize that you’re hiding your emotions, try to be a little more obvious and honest about them.

13. Watch how others react to you

You can understand social situations by watching how other people respond to you. If they’re not responding the way you’d like, you’ve probably missed something important.

Pay attention to how other people respond to you during social activities. If this changes, especially quickly, you might have misread the situation. Take a second (excuse yourself if you need to) and think about what you might have missed. Consider several different possible explanations.

When you return, use these possible explanations to guide how you behave. If things get better, you’ve probably found the right explanation. If not, try thinking of what else could be going on.

14. Don’t override your instincts

You may have a “gut feeling” about how someone else is feeling. It’s tempting to ignore those instincts, but they are probably right more often than you expect.

The trick to trusting your instincts is not to assume you’re right. Accept that you have noticed something, and you think you know what is going on. You can then look for evidence to support or disprove your theory.

15. Take responsibility for your mistakes

Even socially-savvy people make mistakes. Try to accept your mistakes, take responsibility, and learn from them.

Making a social mistake can feel awful, especially if you’ve hurt someone’s feelings. It’s easy to get defensive and tell yourself you couldn’t have known. Instead, try to understand how it happened. This makes it easier to take responsibility and know what to do differently next time.

If possible, ask the other person what went wrong. This isn’t always polite, though, especially if you’ve upset them. In those cases, try asking a trusted friend to discuss it with you. Try not to make excuses and focus on trying to learn.

16. Be kind to yourself

Although it’s important to take responsibility for your mistakes, it’s equally important to be kind to yourself . Struggling with social awareness doesn’t make you a bad person. Being too hard on yourself can make things worse, as you might want to withdraw from social situations.

Try to accept that you won’t fix your social awareness or social skills overnight. Look for small signs of progress, such as noticing that someone is uncomfortable or correctly anticipating what would make them feel good.

Remind yourself that you might be a little oblivious, but you’re not malicious. And, importantly, you are trying to learn. Recognize that this isn’t easy and celebrate your achievements. If you miss an important social cue, try to tell yourself, “Oops. That was a mistake, but I’ve learned from it. That’s good enough…”

Common questions

All of your other social skills rely on your social awareness. [ 9 ] You could have the most incredible conversation skills, charisma, and charm, but without social awareness, you can’t use any of it at the right time or in the right way.

Having social awareness is key to the emotional, mental, and physical health benefits that come with increased social skills, including:

  • Stronger relationships [ 10 ]
  • Improved education [ 11 ]
  • Higher chance of a successful career [ 12 ]
  • Better emotional and social wellbeing [ 13 ]
  • Better health [ 14 ]

This article provides more details about how improved social skills (which rely on social awareness) can improve your life.

It can be hard to judge your social awareness. Try taking our quiz . Social awkwardness often comes from poor social awareness.

In general, you may have low social awareness if:

  • You are often confused about social situations.
  • You struggle to understand other people.
  • You often feel you’ve said the wrong thing without knowing why.

Social awareness is learned, not an innate ability. Because our social situation is constantly changing, we keep developing social awareness throughout our lives. The awareness we need as kids is different from that you need at school as teenagers, as a student at college, or as a leader at work.

The best presentation topics always put their audience first, offer direct solutions, and fill in some knowledge gaps. But there’s more.

Don’t think of your presentation as a mere speech — it’s a ride you’ll take your audience on. There should be highs, lows, and revelations with a bang for an ending.

That being said, use these five tips to ace your presentation.

Presentation Tips. Make it informative, clear, and relevant. Design a clear layout. Choose an appropriate presentation style. Use visual aids. Engage with your audience.

4. Choose an appropriate presentation style.

There are many ways to present a topic. Your personality, the topic at hand, and your audience’s personas will help you determine which style would best fit you and your audience.

Select a presentation style that will communicate the main idea clearly and have a lasting impact on your audience.

For instance, explore a freeform style presenter by Sir Ken Robinson.

5. Engage with your audience.

Work on your presentation skills to make a strong connection with your audience, get through to them and leave a mark.

Think of the presenter as the link between the topic and the audience. A strong or a weak presenter can make a difference between a presentation being a thriving success or a boring failure.

Hone your skills by engaging and interacting with your audience. Make them feel like a part of the presentation and not just spectators. 70% of marketers have found presentations with interactive content to be more effective than those without.

Here are a few ways you can make your presentation interactive:

  • Start your speech with uncommon questions to your audience. Involve them from the get-go, like ask to raise their hands if X.
  • Make eye contact to build credibility and show confidence. Don’t stare at your slides or notes. Smile occasionally and talk to the audience directly.
  • Have an active and confident body language. Don’t stand in the same place the entire time. Move around the stage.
  • Don’t be monotonous. Speak as you would to a colleague — with enthusiasm.
  • Ask close-ended questions in between to keep the audience engaged without losing time. Address them using their names to keep things interesting.
  • Share personal experiences and stories that your audience will find fascinating and relatable.
  • Practice thoroughly before you present so you’re fluent with the material and delivery.
  • Energy and excitement can be quite contagious. Make sure you exude enough to spread some to your audience.

Feeling Inspired Yet?

Now you have all the right ingredients for choosing amazing topics and a hundred ideas to drive inspiration from. So, go ahead and start cooking presentations that will blow your audience away.

Don’t forget to choose a super-relevant topic and add meaty information. Do it with excitement to make it enjoyable for you and your audience. Best of luck!

Don't forget to share this post!

Has There Been A Rise In Adult ADHD Diagnoses? Understanding The Statistics

The topic of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adults appears to have been explored more frequently in recent years as public understanding of the condition has increased. The neurodiversity movement has often been explored online as well, potentially leading more people to seek ADHD diagnoses. Some may wonder if there is truly a rise in people living with ADHD, or if the condition’s online attention has increased public awareness of adult presentations of ADHD. We’ll explore current statistics below, as well as treatment options like therapy.

A man in a black shirt sits at the kitchen table while typing on the lpatop open infront of him.

What is attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)?

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-V). This condition is often noticed in early childhood and is generally lifelong, with no cure, although it can be managed with various forms of treatment.

Symptoms of ADHD usually depend on the subtype, which can be primarily inattentive (ADHD-PI), primarily hyperactive-impulsive (ADHD-HI), or combined type.

Inattentive symptoms of ADHD can include the following:

  • Being easily distracted
  • Difficulty paying attention or focusing on prolonged tasks
  • Poor working memory
  • Losing items frequently, such as one’s keys, phone, or wallet
  • Difficulty paying attention when spoken to
  • Difficulty remaining organized and tidy
  • Frequently making mistakes without realizing
  • Becoming hyper-focused on passion projects but struggling to focus on projects one dislikes

Symptoms of the hyperactive and impulsive type of ADHD can include those listed below:

  • Difficulty sitting still for prolonged periods
  • Speaking louder than normal
  • Rushed speech
  • Impulsive behavior
  • Frequent fidgeting
  • Restlessness
  • Difficulty waiting one’s turn, such as waiting in a line or waiting on hold on the phone
  • Struggling to stay quiet or be comfortable in silence
  • Interrupting in conversations or switching the subject before answering someone
  • Impulse control challenges

Previously, in the DSM-IV, ADHD was grouped with ADD (attention deficit disorder), a condition that is no longer diagnosed and has been replaced by the ADHD-PI subcategory in the DSM-V.

Can adults be diagnosed with ADHD? Looking beyond research on children

Because ADHD is a lifelong condition and form of neurodivergence, ADHD has no cure and can be diagnosed at any age. Adults are frequently diagnosed with ADHD, with an estimated 8.7 million adults in the US currently diagnosed with the disorder .

However, ADHD tends to be more frequently diagnosed in children because its symptoms are often noticed in school settings during early childhood.

In general, ADHD symptoms must be present in someone’s life before the age of 12 and last at least six months for them to be diagnosed as an adult. For this reason, there is no “adult-onset ADHD.” If symptoms only appear in adulthood, a person’s provider might work with them to consider other potential causes of their sudden symptom onset.

Understanding the trend in ADHD diagnoses

In 2022, a study explored whether a rise in adult ADHD diagnoses could be due to a trend or improved awareness of symptoms. Researchers found that increased awareness of diagnostic providers , symptoms, and how these symptoms can present in minorities and women likely led to an increase in adults diagnosed with the condition.

An ADHD diagnosis can lead to support and treatment, which can substantially improve life for adults who previously haven’t gotten the support they deserve due to ADHD going undiagnosed.

Increased awareness of ADHD symptoms in adults instead of children

The internet and social media have offered a way for billions of people to share their experiences with others around the world. Since the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic outbreak, platforms like TikTok appear to have significantly grown in popularity, and people tend to be more open to discussing their experiences with mental health.

ADHD, autism, and neurodivergence have often been explored on social media in recent years, and more people may be learning about the symptoms of these conditions and how they can present.

When someone learns about symptoms online that match their own experiences, they may realize they could benefit from seeking professional support. In addition, people can share the names of diagnostic providers on social media, increasing their visibility in communities across the country.

Improved diagnostic procedures for marginalized groups

In early research on ADHD and other neurodevelopmental conditions, like autism spectrum disorder (ASD), most studies looked at young white males. These studies didn’t necessarily consider the unique presentations of ADHD in other populations, such as women and girls, BIPOC individuals, and those who have experienced severe developmental trauma.

As more research on ADHD is conducted, providers may improve their diagnostic processes and look for these unique presentations instead of only using older and potentially outdated methods.

More research and public knowledge of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder

More research has been released on ADHD in adults, and public knowledge has grown as people have started to talk about these topics at home and in the workplace. As more people are diagnosed, they may recommend providers to loved ones. In addition, people may share studies with their social networks more frequently, which can increase public awareness of current research.

More accessible mental health testing

More providers are starting to specialize in ADHD treatment, ADHD medication (like stimulant medication), and diagnosis as treatment protocols are becoming better understood. Testing may also be more accessible to marginalized groups as more providers take courses and workshops on how to work with these populations. Accessible testing can lead to an influx of diagnoses.

Can someone be misdiagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)?

Misdiagnosis can be possible with any condition, but it may be more common for people with ADHD to be misdiagnosed with other conditions than for a person to be misdiagnosed with ADHD.

People with ADHD are often misdiagnosed with other psychiatric disorders like oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder (BPD), and depression before they are given an accurate diagnosis. Although some conditions can co-occur with ADHD, misdiagnosis can lead to someone not receiving effective treatment, which may reduce mental function and overall well-being.

Signs of ADHD in adults

The ADHD brain in adulthood might look slightly different from the typical presentation of ADHD in children, although the diagnostic criteria are the same in the DSM-V. Below are a few potential differences.

Hyperactive and impulsive symptoms

In children, hyperactivity is usually seen most frequently in the school environment. Children may be more physically hyperactive, running around, jumping up from their desks, and fidgeting with various items.

Because adults often learn to mask their hyperactive urges, they may be less overtly hyperactive and more impulsive in other ways, such as through risky behaviors like substance use, unsafe driving, risky sex, and excessive spending. They may also struggle to work a traditional sit-down job like an office job and might be more likely to multitask and have many different interests.

Inattentive symptoms

Inattentive symptoms in adults might present as difficulty with executive function tasks like paperwork, cleaning, and organization. Adults may also frequently lose items like debit cards, keys, or phones.

In addition, inattentiveness can occur when speaking with others, on the phone, or working on projects that require sitting down and focusing. Some people with inattentive symptoms may also daydream frequently and have difficulty grounding themselves in the present moment.

Avoiding the stigma: Approaching ADHD diagnosis from an inclusive lens

Although it may seem that ADHD is “trending,” the rise in adult diagnoses can be a positive development. As more people understand their symptoms, they can seek the treatment and support they deserve, which can reduce symptom severity and improve overall outcomes. When more people seek support and are open about doing so, the stigma around seeking mental healthcare can be addressed.

Mental health support options for adults

ADHD can lead to various challenges for adults, and seeking mental health support in person might not always be accessible or convenient, especially when juggling a busy schedule or experiencing difficulty remembering appointments. In these cases, talking to an online therapist through a platform like BetterHelp may be beneficial.

Clients can access therapy on their own schedule, including outside of standard business hours. In addition, online platforms often provide tools like worksheets, group sessions, webinars, goal-tracking, and journaling prompts.

Studies suggest that online therapy can effectively support people with ADHD. In a 2022 meta-analysis, researchers examined six randomized controlled trials of 261 individuals with ADHD. They found that ADHD symptom severity generally reduced over six weeks of online mental health treatment .

The rise in ADHD diagnoses can lead to the assumption that ADHD is simply a popular social trend. However, studies suggest that these numbers are increasing due to the increased awareness of different presentations of ADHD. As more people realize that their experiences may be indicative of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, they may seek treatment, which can reduce the stigma associated with seeking help. If you think you may be living with ADHD, consider reaching out to a therapist online or in your area for support.
