Have you ever needed to give a presentation in Japanese and felt a bit overwhelmed with the language and cultural nuances? Whether you’re a student, a business professional, or simply someone interested in sharing ideas in Japanese, mastering presentation phrases is essential. In this blog, we’ll guide you through some useful Japanese presentation phrases to help you deliver a successful and engaging presentation.
A Quick Jump To…
Introduction, transition phrases, providing data and evidence, expressing agreement and disagreement, concluding your presentation, handling questions, kind reminders: cultural considerations.
- Tutorial Video
A well-crafted introduction sets the stage for a successful presentation. Here are some Japanese phrases to get you started:
- こんにちは、皆さん (Kon’nichiwa, minasan) – Hello, everyone.
(Watashi wa [Your name] tomōshimasu) – I am [Your Name].
(Kono purezenteeshon de wa…) – In this presentation…
(Saisho ni) – First of all.
(Mazu, [Topic] ni tsuite hanashishimasu) – First, I will talk about [Topic].
Smooth transitions are essential to keep your audience engaged. Here are some phrases to help you transition from one point to another:
- 次に移ります (Tsugi ni utsurimasu) – Let’s move on to the next point.
(Soredewa, [Next Point] ni tsuite hanashimashou) – Now, let’s talk about [Next Point].
(Kono ten ni kanshite) – Regarding this point.
To support your claims and arguments, it’s crucial to present data and evidence effectively. Use these phrases:
(Dēta ni yori) – According to the data.
(Kore ni yori, [Your Point] ga akiraka ni narimasu) – This makes it clear that [Your Point].
(Rei o agemashou) – Let’s give an example.
(Kore wa tōkei-teki ni shimesa rete imasu) – This is statistically demonstrated.
In discussions and presentations, you may need to agree or disagree with other points. Here are some phrases for these situations:

A strong conclusion is vital to leave a lasting impression. Try these phrases:
(Saigo ni, matomemasuto) – In conclusion, to sum up.
(Minasan, nanika shitsumon ga gozaimasu ka) – Does anyone have any questions?
Prepare for questions and engage with your audience effectively:
- はい、どんな質問でも結構です (Hai, don’na shitsumon demo kekkōdesu) – Yes, I’ll take any questions.
(Hijō ni daijina shitsumondesu ne) – That’s a very important question.
Understanding Japanese cultural nuances can enhance your presentation:
- 謙譲語を使用する (Kensetsu o shiyō suru) – Use humble language.
(Chokusetsutekina hyōgen o yokeru) – Avoid direct expressions.
(Keigo o tsukau) – Use respectful language.

Are there specific cultural nuances in japanese presentations that aren't covered in the guide.
Yes, there are several cultural nuances to be aware of in Japanese presentations. For example, it’s important to use respectful language (keigo) when addressing superiors or clients. Additionally, indirect and modest language is often preferred, and avoiding direct expressions can be seen as more polite.
What are some common challenges non-native speakers face when giving presentations in Japanese, and how can they overcome them?
Non-native speakers may face challenges with pronunciation, fluency, and understanding of cultural nuances. To overcome these challenges, it’s crucial to practice speaking, seek feedback, and immerse oneself in the language and culture. Taking language courses and working with a language coach can also be beneficial.
Could you offer tips for incorporating visual aids effectively into a Japanese presentation?
When using visual aids in a Japanese presentation, keep them simple and uncluttered. Use visuals to complement your spoken words, not replace them. Ensure that any text on slides is in Japanese, and provide context for any images or charts. Rehearse your presentation with the visuals to ensure smooth integration.
How important are body language and non-verbal communication in Japanese presentations?
Body language and non-verbal communication are highly important in Japanese presentations. Maintaining good eye contact, bowing as a sign of respect, and using appropriate gestures can enhance your communication. Be aware of your posture and facial expressions to convey sincerity and attentiveness.
What are some advanced-level presentation phrases for those looking to take their Japanese presentation skills to the next level?
Advanced presenters can incorporate more complex language structures and idiomatic expressions. They may also use rhetorical devices and storytelling techniques to engage the audience. Additionally, mastering advanced-level phrases for agreement, disagreement, and persuasion is beneficial in conveying a more nuanced message in Japanese presentations.

Why Team USA Figure Skaters Received Gold Medals at the Paris Summer Olympics
T he temperature in Paris was hovering near 80ºF, but it felt even hotter in the blazing sun during the Olympic medal ceremony Wednesday at Champions Park under the Eiffel Tower in Paris. And instead of Olympians who had recently won medals in summer sports like swimming, gymnastics, and fencing at the 2024 Games, the first athletes honored were…figure skaters.
Team USA and Team Japan figure skaters from the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics finally received their medals in Paris, two and a half years after they competed. In Beijing, the Russians— competing as the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) due to an ongoing ban over the country's doping efforts—finished first in the team event, followed by the U.S. and Japan. But a positive doping test for a banned substance from one of the women’s event skaters, Kamila Valieva , put the final standings in question. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) decided to postpone the awarding of any medals and the skaters left Beijing without knowing the outcome of the team event.
It wasn’t until January 2024 that the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), an independent review body that investigated the circumstances surrounding Valieva's positive sample, ruled that her scores should be eliminated from the team event, as well as the women’s event in which she also competed and finished fourth. In the team event, that moved the U.S. up to gold and Japan to silver while Russia moved down to bronze. The Russian skaters did not participate in the ceremony in Paris.
“As soon as we left Beijing, and our team was asked, what’s your dream scenario? We said we wanted to be in Paris and wanted to get the gold medal, and that is exactly what happened,” says Evan Bates, who with now-wife Madison Chock was one of the two ice dancing teams who competed in the team event.
The group also decided that if not all of them—Bates, Chock, Karen Chen , Nathan Chen , Zachary Donohue, Brandon Frazier, Madison Hubbell, Alexa Knierim, and Vincent Zhou—could make the medal ceremony, they would not come to Paris. “If we’re not all going to be there, then we don’t want to have [the ceremony] yet,” Nathan Chen, who also won gold in the men's event , said of the team’s desire to receive their medals together.
“Usually there is churn in terms of members between Olympic cycles, but our team competed together through one or two Olympic cycles,” said Zhou, who developed COVID-19 after skating in the team event and was unable to compete in the men's event. “So for four to eight years we all came up together, we all experienced the same struggles at competition after competition, and Olympics after Olympics. Going through all of that and coming through it with this result is incredible for all of us.”
Life is very different for most of them, and competitive skating is no longer part of their lives. Only Chock and Bates, who got married in June, are continuing to train, with an eye toward competing in the 2026 Games in Milan and Cortina. Karen Chen, who competed in the women's event, is back in college at Cornell University, expecting to graduate in 2025. Nathan Chen graduated from Yale and is planning on attending medical school. Hubbell, who with partner Donohue earned bronze in the ice dance event in Beijing, got married to Spanish ice dancer Adrian Diaz in 2023. The couple welcomed a baby, Chloe, earlier this year—and Hubbell brought her daughter with her to enjoy the medal ceremony in Paris. Donohue married an ice dancer as well and now works as a choreographer. Zhou ended his internship at a financial services company in New York early in order to attend the ceremony in Paris, and will return to finish his last year at Brown University in the fall. Education is also the top priority for Frazier, who is pursuing a business degree while coaching pairs skating in California.
The delay, however, is bittersweet, especially given the uncertainty that the skaters have lived with over the past two and a half years. “There were many times where I thought that the thought of coming to Paris was just something to fill our hearts with hope,” said Knierim. “I didn’t really think it was going to happen. It was disappoint to have to live through the turmoil of uncertainty. So I that regard, it was not ideal. I am happy that we were able to have this moment but nothing would have replaced the moment in Beijing at our [Olympic] Village, in our Olympic gear, and in that moment with the hype and excitement. The pain that we’ve endured over these two and a half years will always be there.”
Nathan Chen, who also won gold in the men’s event and received that medal in Beijing, agreed, noting “there are pros and cons” to the Paris medals ceremony. “Beijing—that’s our Olympics, that’s where we belong, and that’s where we competed. So there’s definitely sentimental value with—this is amazing, and so beautiful, but it’s not Beijing. But at the same time, we’re at the base of the Eiffel Tower. Like how cool is this? It’s definitely a unique experience. But it’s apples to oranges” comparing the two, he said.
One plus of the Paris ceremony, other than the iconic location—the skaters received their medals in front of family and friends, who couldn’t be in Beijing because of strict COVID-19 policies that banned spectators.
In some ways, the delayed ceremony provides critical and timely leverage for an issue that continues to plague every major sports event, including the Olympic Games—doping. The reason the U.S. and Japanese teams waited so long for their medals was due to Valieva’s violation involving trimetazidine (TMZ) , a heart drug approved in some countries but not in the U.S., that can improve blood flow and therefore potentially aid athletes in training. The Russian Anti-Doping Agency concluded that Valieva’s positive test, which occurred at the Russian national championships, was due to contamination with her grandfather’s medication, and after a provisional suspension, allowed her to compete at the Beijing Olympics.
TMZ is an issue again in Paris, as investigations revealed that nearly two dozen Chinese swimmers, some of whom raced in Paris, tested positive for TMZ before the Tokyo Olympic Games but were not sanctioned by China’s anti-doping agency. Chinese officials also determined that the positive samples resulted from contamination of food the swimmers ate while at a hotel.
“At the end of the day, as athletes, clean sport is integral to competing here [at the Olympics] and really, it kind of defeats the purpose of competing if there isn’t a clean and level playing field,” said Nathan Chen. Revising the standings of the team figure skating event, he said, “is a precedent. “At least we know now that given the situation, this is what the result was.”

Experience an authentic tea ceremony at Seattle Japanese Garden
You may know that Seattle has a traditional Japanese Garden in the Washington Park Arboretum. But did you know that you can experience a taste of Japanese culture at a tea ceremony presentation in the garden?
The Japanese tea ceremony is a tradition that started in the 1500s, originally as a practice done among warriors. The tea ceremony focuses on the Japanese concept of ichigo-ichiie - the idea that experiences can never be replicated, so you should take advantage of the present moment. The values of harmony, respect, purity, and tranquility are valued within the tea ceremony practice.
Yukari Yamano, Event Coordinator at the Seattle Japanese Garden notes, "If someone is interested in Japanese culture, the tea ceremony really represents the spirit of Japanese-ness."
The demonstration lasts for about 40 minutes, and includes up to 12 participants. It takes place in the Shoesian Tea House in the Roji Garden (this part of the Japanese Garden can only be accessed by tea ceremony participants). Demonstrators first describe the tea ceremony, and then they perform a portion of it. Participants then enjoy a cup of tea and some traditional Japanese sweets.
Three different groups rotate as tea demonstrators: the Chado Urasenke Tankokai Seattle Association, Omotesenke-ryu, and Chaboshu. All perform a similar and meaningful tea ceremony demonstration.
I went in the afternoon on a rainy spring day, though the rain had stopped by the time I got to the garden. It was a perfect afternoon to visit and learn about the Japanese tea ceremony.
A kimono-clad instructor led me and the other participants into the tea room garden, and spent time sharing a brief history of tea and the Japanese tea ceremony. I learned that tea originally came from China to Japan, and a traditional Japanese tea ceremony lasts about four hours. I also discovered that matcha tea is ground-up tea leaves, and that women didn't practice tea ceremony until about 150 years ago.
We then watched two people perform a portion of a traditional Japanese tea ceremony as our instructor narrated.
Finally, we were invited to come into the tea house to experience a taste of the tea ceremony. We ate a small grape-flavored candy and white bean paste pancake before getting a small cup of matcha tea. All throughout, participants asked questions and the instructor guided us on how to participate in the ceremony.
It was a perfect glimpse into the Japanese tea ceremony practice.
The tea ceremony costs $15 per participant. It's offered between April and October, and is available on some Fridays and weekends. It's a popular event, so consider booking your ticket well in advance.
Know Before You Go:
●Avoid fragrances so you and other participants can immerse in the smells of the tea house and tea.
●Avoid wearing rings so as not to scratch the bowls used in tea ceremony demonstration.
●You pay admission to the garden in addition to your tea ceremony ticket - $10/adult (18-64); $6/youth (6-17), Senior adults (65+), military, and students (with valid ID); free/children (0-5).
Enjoy this rich experience of Japanese culture in heart of Seattle!

Orphan Film Symposium
Saving, studying, and screening neglected cinema and media artifacts
Japanese Paper Films
Bucknell university’s japanese paper film presentation — with live music.
by Adrianne Lundy (NYU Cinema Studies, MIAP Program)
The theme Work & Play takes a rare and delightful form in Eric Faden and Jackson Rubiano ‘s presentation of three Japanese paper films (also known as “ kami firumu ”). Just as it sounds, these works were originally printed on paper instead of celluloid throughout the 1930s. They were produced and sold by Japanese companies (the most prominent were called RECFY and Katei Toki), which also sold the means to view the films in the form of small hand-cranked projectors. The films could be live-action or animated, oftentimes in color, and with synchronized music or sound on 78rpm records. Stills from surviving prints certainly reflect a whimsical, playful tone. However, substantial work was involved to be able to screen these films at the 14th Orphan Film Symposium.
Today, very few Japanese paper film prints survive. Those that have present challenges to standardized film scanners, as they were not created with uniformity in mind. Gauges vary between 26 – 27mm (approximately), perforations are horizontal and can appear above or below the frame line, and frame sizes were dependent on reels that were hand-glued together.
In an effort to tackle these issues, Faden (Professor of Film/Media Studies at Bucknell) began The Japanese Paper Film Project in 2020. This initiative has been joined by other faculty and students of media studies, East Asian studies, mechanical engineering, and computer science. The project also partners with institutions such as The Toy Film Museum in Kyoto, and the Itabashi Science Museum in Tokyo. In 2023, these collaborations led to the digitization of 85 Japanese paper films through the creation of a custom scanner, Kyōrinrin.
The scanner is appropriately named after a Japanese spirit of forgotten scrolls and knowledge. Kyōrinrin was designed by Nate Siegel (Professor, Mechanical Engineering) and student Alina Arko . Unlike other scanners that capture film frames one at a time, Kyōrinrin captures the reels in-motion to account for the variations in image. The Blackmagic 6K camera is given specific settings to ensure that there is proper color information and no motion blur. Meanwhile, the fragile print passes through on a custom built, low-tension transport rig.
Credit: Japanese Paper Film Project Twitter @kamifirumu
Additionally, a custom software needed to be developed in order to detect the frame lines and stabilize the image. This was created by Joshua Stough (Associate Professor, Computer Science), and students Yuhan Chen, and Jackson Rubiano.
These customized preservation efforts reflect a hand-crafted care that was present in this film oddity’s production life. The unique opportunity to view the fruits of these labors will take place at the symposium April 11 at the Museum of Moving Image. This will include two animated films, Express Chushingura (1930s) and The Battle of Monkey and Crabs (1930s), and one live-action film, China Incident Glorious Battle (1930s).
Enhancing the experience, Yoko Reikano Kimura accompanies the screening with a performance on the koto. Made possible by the Lisa Lu Foundation.

Finally, US figure skaters will get Beijing Olympic gold medals — under Eiffel Tower
PARIS — The Kamila Valieva doping saga , one of the most controversial, arduous and infuriating scandals in Olympic history, reaches its long-awaited conclusion Wednesday evening at the base of the Eiffel Tower when, for the first time in history, Winter Olympians will receive their gold medals at the Summer Olympics.
Exactly 2½ years to the day after the team figure skating competition ended at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, U.S. figure skaters will get their gold medals and their Japanese counterparts their silvers at the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics .
Russia dropped from first place to third after Valieva was suspended for four years and her Olympic results were disqualified, but since Russia is not allowed at the Paris Olympics due to the war in Ukraine, their skaters will not be allowed at the medal ceremony and will receive their bronze medals elsewhere, probably in Russia at some later date.
All nine skaters on the U.S. team, their coaches and several members of each of their families flew to Paris on Tuesday courtesy of the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee and the International Olympic Committee.
Medal ceremony outfits have been made for the Americans by the USOPC, which the skaters will wear at the Paris Olympics’ Champions Park for the ceremony beginning at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

“It’s so magical that we get this opportunity,” Nathan Chen, who also won the gold medal in the men’s figure skating competition at the 2022 Olympics, said in a phone interview Tuesday after arriving in Paris.
Then, alluding to all the stops and starts over the past 30 months in this bizarre international doping scandal, Chen added slyly, “Obviously, it hasn’t happened yet, so I’ll check back with you once it’s happening.”

While the Valieva saga deprived the American and Japanese skaters of their moment on the podium at the 2022 Olympics, and the wait has been an annoying series of twists and turns, there is a silver lining to this gold-medal finale in France.
“What better place to get a medal than Paris?” said Chen, who has graduated from Yale since those Olympics and is heading into a post-grad program this fall.
Had the Americans received their then-silver medals when they were supposed to in Beijing, they would have been given them in the eerie isolation of Beijing’s COVID Olympics. They would have been wearing masks, and they would have been all alone except for their teammates. None of their families and friends were allowed to travel to China for those Games due to the stringent COVID restrictions at the time.
“My parents didn’t get to share the Beijing (men’s gold) medal with me so it’s cool to be able to have this alternative that now allows us to have a chance to have my family in attendance,” said Chen, who said his “whole family,” 10 in total, is with him in Paris.
“I’m really excited for the team, I’m excited to have this opportunity, I’m excited to share this with my family. For me, it’s just joy, glad that we get to have this opportunity. Given the situation, I’m happy that we’re able to have this opportunity just to share with our friends and family and of course the team. That’s really cool.”
On Feb. 7, 2022, Chen and his teammates won the silver medal behind Valieva and the Russians, and ahead of then-third-place Japan. The next day, they were getting ready for the medal ceremony in Beijing when it was abruptly called off, throwing the results of the competition into disarray, when the then-15-year-old Valieva was found to have tested positive for the banned heart medication trimetazidine (TMZ) six weeks earlier at the Russian championships.
After many months of dithering and delays, mostly by Russian officials, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruled against Valieva in January 2024, paving the way for the U.S. team to move up to the gold medal.
However, that wasn’t the end of the story. The Russians filed three appeals of that decision with CAS — one from the Russian Olympic Committee, another from the Russian figure skating federation and the third from the six skaters who comprised the Russian team.
As the weeks wore on, there was concern that if CAS did not rule on the appeals in time, the Paris medal ceremony could not take place, leaving the skaters without their medals for who knew how much longer.
Finally, less than two weeks ago, on the day before the Paris Olympics' opening ceremony, CAS dismissed all three Russian appeals and the figure skating medal ceremony was on.

US, Japan figure skaters will finally get their 2022 Winter Olympics medals after Russia doping case

PARIS (AP) — U.S. and Japanese figure skaters finally have a date at the Paris Olympics next week to get their Beijing Winter Games medals — exactly 2 ½ years after they earned them in a team event upended by a Russian doping case.
A presentation ceremony for skating’s team event from February 2022 will be held Aug. 7 at 5 p.m. in Paris, the International Olympic Committee said Monday.
The U.S. and Japan placed second and third behind Russia but no team skating medals were awarded in Beijing because Russian teenage star Kamila Valieva within hours was implicated in a doping case that took almost two years to judge.
The U.S. skaters formally became Olympic champions after Russian appeals seeking to regain the title were dismissed last week by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
The medals will be awarded beneath the Eiffel Tower at the Champions Park site where VIPs watched the Paris Olympics opening ceremony.
Valieva was disqualified from the Beijing Olympics and banned for four years by a CAS panel of judges in January.
The latest round of Russian appeals challenged how the International Skating Union amended the Beijing result after the January ruling. That left the Russians in third place and Canada fourth.
It wasn’t immediately clear whether the bronze medals would also be presented in Paris. A Canadian appeal to be given the bronze is currently being judged by CAS, which held a hearing on July 22.

Towards a Competent Public Health Workforce for Multi-Hazard Public Health Emergency Risk Management at Points of Entry in Sri Lanka & Maldives: A joint WHO-IOM training initiative
Preparing a well- trained public heath workforce to manage health emergency risks and foster inter-country cooperation for enabling compliance to International Health Regulations (IHR) 2005 at airports, seaports , and onboard conveyances in Sri Lanka & Maldives through a joint WHO-IOM competency-based training.
August 2024
A landmark training on International Health Regulations (IHR) (2005) core capacities at airports, seaports, and onboard conveyances – airplane and ships, concluded in Sri Lanka on Friday, 2 August 2024. The training was aimed at strengthening the competencies of public health officials in Sri Lanka and the Maldives, focusing on IHR linked legal requirements and assessments to enhance core capacities at these two types of Points of Entry (PoEs) and conveyances. This is a first-of-its-kind joint initiative by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), exemplifying collaboration between UN agencies through sharing of expertise and resources provided by a bilateral development partner to support countries to prepare a competent national health human resource.
The training, which was held from 29 July to 2 August 2024, was supported by the Ministry of Health, Government of Sri Lanka and generously funded by the Government of Japan.
Dr. S.M. Arnold, Deputy Director General (PHS I) of the Ministry of Health, Sri Lanka, highlighted the training’s significance by stating - “ The essence of this training is to ensure that personnel at our PoEs, our gateways to the world, are equipped with the necessary knowledge, skills, and tools to handle health emergencies effectively. Additionally, it seeks collaboration and information sharing among public health professionals, ensuring a more coordinated response to health threats.”
The Role of PoEs in Global Health Security
Points of entry play a crucial role in global health security as frontline defences against the spread of infectious diseases and other health threats. Effective management of these points is essential for safeguarding health of the community at both national and international scales. However, managing PoEs presents several challenges, including the need for strong cross-sectoral coordination among all stakeholders involved, adequate resources, trained PoE officials, advanced technological tools and adequate infrastructure, and the capacity to handle high volumes of travellers, conveyances and cargo efficiently. Competent personnel at PoEs are vital to respond to public health events and prevent cross-border spread of infections by implementing the core capacities of IHR (2005). Therefore, a sustainable public health system with highly qualified health and non-health personnel equipped with appropriate technical training and skills is of utmost importance.
Enhancing Knowledge and Skills
The joint WHO-IOM training aimed to strengthen the knowledge of border health officials on IHR (2005) core capacities, recent amendments to the IHR, and effective use of standard assessment tools at PoEs, with a special focus on conducting ship sanitation inspections. The training was attended by 29 public health officials, including eight from the Maldives and 21 from Sri Lanka. Four international expert trainers from a Port Health Authority of the United Kingdom and the three levels of WHO (Geneva, WHO South-East Asia Regional Office, Country Office - Timor Leste) and one observer also participated.
HE Mizukoshi Hideaki, Ambassador of Japan to Sri Lanka, emphasized Japan's commitment to supporting preparedness for future health emergencies. “As we move beyond the pandemic, Japan remains committed to supporting countries’ preparedness for future health emergencies. This training will provide valuable tools to strengthen Sri Lanka and Maldives’ public health management , improving their response to future challenges.”
Hands-On Experience
The training included both face-to-face and interactive practical sessions, allowing participants to apply their theoretical knowledge in real-world scenarios. The classroom component introduced participants to IHR (2005) requirements at PoEs at routine times and during public health emergencies and WHO assessment tools through presentations, exercises, and group activities. Participants then visited Bandaranaike International Airport for a simulated assessment as well as a simulated scenario on the management of public health events onboard an aircraft, and Colombo Port for a Ship Sanitation Certification inspection on board an international vessel and a simulated port health assessment. In preparation, participants were required to complete two online trainings on the WHO Ship Sanitation Inspection and Issuance of Ship Sanitation Certificate; and the WHO Public Health Event Management in Air Transport.
Perspectives of the organizing UN agencies and participants
Dr. Shalala Ahmadova, Public Health Administrator- OIC WHO Sri Lanka remarked that “This gathering signifies our collective commitment to strengthening health security and our dedication to ensuring the health and well-being of people and communities.” Similarly, Dr. Simeonette De Asis-Chief of Mission ai- IOM Sri Lanka and Maldives emphasized on the collaboration between the UN agencies “ This training is a testament to the powerful collaboration, tying our efforts with the World Health Organization and the Ministry of Health has been instrumental in bringing this program to a successful conclusion.”
Participants enthusiastically shared on how this training was beneficial for them:
“ I was particularly impressed by how Sri Lankan port health officers meticulously inspect the food being loaded onto vessels. I’m eager to recommend this practice to my colleagues at the Health Protection Agency in the Maldives ,” said Dr. Mohamed Ahzam, Public Health Officer at the Health Protection Agency in the Maldives.
Dr. Yasoma Weerasekara, Deputy Director of Port Health in Colombo, Sri Lanka, also found the training invaluable. “It’s just been few months into my new role working for the port health office. This training has been a great learning platform for me to improve my knowledge , especially on coordination and communication and the assessments of core capacities at the ports. However, having more regional examples reflecting best practices would have made it even better ,” said Dr. Weerasekara.
Strengthening Core Capacities
A significant achievement of the training was the introduction to assessment tools aimed at strengthening core capacities at PoEs. The simulated public health capacity assessment at the airport and the simulated ship inspection and issuance of a ship sanitation certificate on board an international vessel at Colombo Port were particularly noteworthy. This training helps bolster health security capacities at PoEs, as highlighted in the WHO South-Esat Asia Regional strategic roadmap on health security and health system resilience for emergencies 2023-2027, by providing border health officials with a thorough understanding of IHR and essential core capacities and assessment tools. Such cross-country training reinforces collaboration among nations, enabling them to network effectively to manage and mitigate health risks, thereby safeguarding the well-being of everyone.
As the world continues to face emerging health threats, the role of border health officials and PoEs remains central to safeguarding global health security. Training officials stationed at PoEs to ensure compliance to IHR is crucial for this.
