On TikTok, many people are being “very mindful” of their actions. They’re acting “very cutesy.”
In fact, you could say they’re “very demure.”
Those three phrases — but “demure” specifically — have consumed the platform in recent weeks after a creator who goes by Jools Lebron began using them this month to explain to viewers how she handles a wide variety of daily situations: from being “very mindful” when she’s on vacation to being “very demure” while waiting to board a plane. It’s unclear how many followers Jools Lebron, who also goes by @joolieannie, gained since the trend went viral (she has 1.3 million followers on TikTok), but 50,000 posts on the platform have used the term “demure.”
“See how I come to work? Very demure. I do my makeup. I do my wig. I do a little braid. I flatiron my hair. I do chi-chis out. I do viral vanilla,” Lebron, who is transgender and uses she/her pronouns, said in what appears to be the first video in which she used the word "demure." In the video she sprayed herself with perfume in her car before going on to say she is being, “Very demure. Very mindful. Let’s not forget to be demure, divas.”
The terms are the latest verbal trend to overtake TikTok and other parts of social media, where inside jokes and slang can rise and fall so quickly that only those who spend a considerable amount of time online can keep up. Some of those terms have entered a more common lexicon, like “ OK Boomer ” (a dismissive retort to an older person), while others have remained relatively niche, like “ Goblin Mode ” (a person who is messy). Last year, “Rizz” (short for charisma) came out of the internet ether to be named “Word of the Year” by Oxford .
Even social media’s youngest users, Gen Alpha, have developed hyper-online styles of speech, sometimes referred to as “ brainrot ” that can make language derived from the internet seem unintelligible to those who don’t use it.
“Demure,” for now, has its own momentum. The first video of Jools Lebron using the term has been viewed 3.9 million times. The second video she posted about being “demure,” “cutesy” and “mindful” has more than 13.8 million views. As she continued posting videos with the term, she continued wracking up tens of millions of views.
“Demure” means reserved or modest, according to Merriam-Webster .
Lebron did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Initially, Lebron made content like “get ready with me” videos and product review videos. After what appears to be the earliest videos of Lebron using her now-iconic phrase on Aug. 2, she continued to post about what she called “demurity” and how to be “demure.”
“You see how I do my makeup for work? Very demure, very mindful,” she says in a video posted on Aug. 5. “I don’t look like a clown when I come to work. I don’t do too much, I’m very mindful while I’m at work.”
The audio attached to that Aug. 5 video has been used more than 7,000 times on TikTok by major accounts lip-synching along to it, including “RuPaul’s Drag Race” star Bob the Drag Queen , who has more than 3 million followers, and lifestyle vlogger Monet McMichael , who has more than 3.8 million followers.
Other major TikTok stars have used the term sarcastically. Influencer Haley Kalil , who goes by @haleyybaylee on TikTok and has more than 10 million followers, made her own video saying she was blocking her ex-boyfriend, but doing so in a very “demure” way.
“Do you see how I block my ex? Very demure. Very mindful. I don’t go blocking my ex all crazy and insane. No, no. We keep it very cutesy,” Kalil says, imitating the way Lebron speaks in her videos — before appearing to have a not-so-demure breakdown.
Users have even proclaimed that the seasons are transitioning from “ Brat” summer to “ demure fall ” — although others are calling it “ mindful autumn .”
In a video posted Tuesday , Lebron described how the “demure” trend has changed her life.
“Maybe you should make the videos because one day I was playing cashier and making videos on my break,” Jools Lebron said in the video. “And now I’m flying across the country to host events, and I’m going to be able to finance the rest of my transition.”
Of course, because she is cutesy and mindful, she hashtagged the video “#demure.”

Former President Donald Trump received an immediate backlash Thursday when he said the Presidential Medal of Freedom he awarded to Dr. Miriam Adelson, the widow of Republican mega-donor Sheldon Adelson, was "equivalent" and "much better" than the Medal of Honor, the nation's highest military award for bravery in combat.
Speaking from his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, during an event on fighting antisemitism, Trump praised the late Las Vegas casino magnate as "one of the greatest businessmen in the world," before addressing Sheldon Adelson's widow to make a comparison between the Medal of Honor and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor, which is typically given for significant achievements in the arts, public service and other fields.
"I watched Sheldon sitting so proud in the White House when we gave Miriam the Presidential Medal of Freedom. That's the highest award you can get as a civilian. It's the equivalent of the Congressional Medal of Honor, but civilian version," said Trump as he spoke from the podium in front of multiple American and Israeli flags.
He added, "It's actually much better because everyone gets the Congressional Medal of Honor, they're soldiers. They're either in very bad shape because they've been hit so many times by bullets or they are dead. She gets it and she's a healthy, beautiful woman. And they're rated equal, but she got the Presidential Medal of Freedom."
Miriam Adelson is a physician who specializes in drug addiction and is known for her humanitarian work and donations to Jewish organizations. In 2018, Trump awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom during a White House ceremony. The Trump administration at the time noted her two research centers aimed at stemming substance abuse and the work of the Adelson Medical Research Foundation, established to combat life-threatening illnesses.
GOP Sen. JD Vance of Ohio was asked about his running mate's remarks on Friday.
"This is a guy who loves our veterans and who honors our veterans," Vance replied. "I don't think him complimenting and saying a nice word about a person who received the Presidential Medal of Freedom is in any way denigrating those who received military honors."
But many veterans with prominent platforms on social media denounced Thursday's remarks from the 2024 Republican presidential nominee , lambasting the comments about the medal as "offensive" and "disrespectful." Trump's statement about the Medal of Honor and his characterization of service members who receive the award became a top trending topic of discussion on X, the social media platform.
Trump's comments on Thursday evening recalled past criticism of the former president over his disparaging comments about the late Republican Sen. John McCain in 2015 when he said McCain was "only a war hero because he was captured" during the Vietnam War, adding, "I like people that weren't captured, OK?" There was also backlash when he allegedly called Americans who died at war "losers" and "suckers" following a canceled trip to visit the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery near Paris in 2018. Trump denies he made the belittling comments about fallen U.S. service members.
Many critics online noted the millions of dollars the Adelsons had donated to Trump and other GOP candidates and causes, and contrasted that with the extraordinary bravery of Medal of Honor recipients who receive the award for great courage in the face of extreme danger. Often, these service members, some of whom die in the process, completely disregard their own lives to save others or eliminate heavy bombardments and enemy gunfire.
The Adelsons donated $20 million to Trump's 2016 presidential campaign and $5 million for his inauguration. Another half a million was given to a legal fund for Trump aides in 2018, according to Politico. That same year, the couple ponied up more than $100 million to conservative groups and GOP candidates during the election cycle. In 2020 , the couple gave $75 million to the Preserve America PAC, a pro-Trump super PAC. The Adelson's total contributions to Republicans totaled more than $218 million between 2019 and 2020, according to Open Secrets, which tracks money in politics.
Contacted by CBS News on Friday, Pentagon spokesperson Maj. Gen. Patrick Ryder said it's longstanding Defense Department policy to not comment on remarks from political campaigns, given the department's apolitical nature.
"Separately, the Department of Defense is eternally grateful for the service, sacrifice, and bravery of all those awarded the Medal of Honor, which is by law the nation's highest military award for valor presented only to U.S. service members who have distinguished themselves through conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty," said Ryder.
Matt Zeller, a former Army captain and CIA officer who served in Afghanistan and has since worked for years to resettle Afghan allies who served with U.S. and coalition partners during America's longest war, denounced the former president's comments.
"People need to see that this is who Trump is and how he sees those of us who have served in the military. He's been disparaging us for years," Zeller told CBS News. "I can only hope this latest affront against military service is the one that finally makes the rest of my fellow veterans see the light — the man is a con."
The Medal of Honor was first presented in 1863, according to a U.S. Senate committee print on the medal. It is the nation's highest military award for combat valor and is awarded by the president in the name of Congress — this is why the prestigious honor is often referred to as the Congressional Medal of Honor.
Out of the 41 million who have served in the U.S. military, only 3,517 service members have received the Medal of Honor — 19 of whom were awarded the medal twice — according to the Congressional Medal of Honor Society.
Conversely, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, created by President Harry S. Truman in 1945, is often given to recipients who reflect a president's "political and personal interests," according to the Congressional Research Service. As of July, between 1963 and 2024, the medal has been awarded 653 times. Past recipients include great figures in the world of art and entertainment, the Apollo 13 Mission Operations Team, and two double recipients: the late U.S. Ambassador Ellsworth Bunker and Colin Powell, the former secretary of state and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who died in 2021.
The day Miriam Adelson received her medal, Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah, former NFL football player turned Minnesota Supreme Court judge Alan Page, and Hall of Fame Dallas Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach, also received the honor. The award was also given posthumously to Elvis Presley, Babe Ruth and conservative Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.
Medal of Honor recipient and retired Army Capt. Florent Groberg said on X that he has a "tremendous amount of respect for the Medal of Freedom and what it symbolizes" and that "it's important to recognize the contributions of civilians" but added, "I feel that it's not quite comparable to the Medal of Honor, as they are two very different awards with different criteria and significance."
Retired Army Sgt. Maj. Kenneth Ramos echoed Groberg's assessment and drew a contrast between the Presidential Medals of Freedom Trump gave to Adelson and others and the Medal of Honor the former president authorized posthumously to Army Sgt. 1st Class Alwyn Cashe before leaving the White House. His widow, Tamara, accepted the medal on his behalf from President Biden in 2021.
During a nighttime mounted patrol on Oct. 17, 2005 in Iraq's Salah Ad Din Province, Cashe and his soldiers found themselves in a dire situation when his unit was ambushed. Their Bradley Fighting Vehicle struck an improvised explosive device, engulfing them in flames while a barrage of gunfire ensued from enemy forces.
After escaping the inferno, Cashe dove back into the vehicle to rescue his fellow soldiers, first pulling out his driver. As Cashe was extinguishing the flames on the driver, the veteran soldier's uniform, which was drenched in fuel, ignited. Cashe received severe second and third degree burns over nearly 72% of his body, per the U.S. Army.
Despite the painful wounds, Cashe again re-entered the vehicle under the threat of fire and enemy bullets, to retrieve six additional soldiers and an Iraqi interpreter from the burning vehicle. When reinforcements arrived, Cashe insisted his soldiers receive medical attention first and refused to be evacuated to follow-on medical care before them. Cashe died on Nov. 8, 2005 at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas.
"Cashe knew the danger in his attempts to rescue his fellow soldiers and absolutely cannot be placed in the same category of a civilian award," Ramos told CBS News. "It dishonors his memory as a hero, but also devalues the Medal of Honor coming from someone hoping to be the commander-in-chief of our armed forces again."

If you’re completely new to Microsoft Word, you’re probably wondering where to begin. You’ve come to the right place because we’ll get you started. From what you see in the Word window to how to save a document, this Word Tutorial for Beginners is for you.
How to name and save document files, how to use autosave, get to know the interface, how to use the tabs and ribbon.
Note : The information in this tutorial applies to Microsoft Word for 365 on Windows. While you may see varying terms, tool locations, or available options, most Word versions have the same basic features. Once you have whatever version you’re using downloaded and installed , you can jump right in.
When you open Microsoft Word, you can create a new empty document or use a built-in template . To best get familiar with the application and the features we explain here, select a Blank document on the Home screen and follow along!
One of the most important things to learn about using Microsoft Word is naming and saving your documents. There’s nothing worse than putting hours of work into a document, only to find out you didn’t save it before closing it .
A good habit to start is to name and save the document as soon as you begin. You can then continually save it with the same name as you work on it. Another option is to use AutoSave, which is available to Microsoft 365 subscribers.
As you work on your document, you can use the Save button in the Quick Access Toolbar at any point. Alternatively, select File > Save . This ensures you won’t lose your work.
To use AutoSave, you must subscribe to Microsoft 365. With this feature, the document saves occasionally and automatically as you work on it, which is convenient. It’s important to note that the file must be saved to OneDrive not locally on your device.
You’ll then see the AutoSave toggle enabled as you work on your document.
The next important aspect to learn about Microsoft Word is what you see in the application’s window.
Title bar : This is the bar at the very top of the window. It contains the Quick Access Toolbar on the left, which holds handy buttons like Save and Undo, the document name, the Search feature, and buttons to control the window.
Tabs : Below the title bar is the tab row. You’ll see tabs for Home, Insert, Draw, Design, Layout, and more. You open the tab you need to perform a task using the tools on the ribbon.
One exception is the File tab on the far left, which doesn’t have a ribbon. Instead, you’ll see a navigation on the left side that allows you to save, print, export, close, and access the settings. You can also use the right side on the File tab to create new documents and open recent ones.
Ribbon : Below the tab row is the ribbon that holds buttons and menus. When you open a tab, you’ll see tools in the ribbon for that particular tab. For instance, if you want to change your document’s appearance, you’d go to the Design tab and see tools for themes, formatting, colors, and page color.
Status bar : This is the bar at the bottom of the window. You can customize this area to show commonly needed details like page number, indicators like caps lock, and options for zoom. Right-click the Status bar to add or remove items.
The center of the Word window is the document workspace where you can simply begin typing to create an essay, article, report, résumé, and similar.
As mentioned above, the ribbon holds buttons and menus that allow you perform actions. The ribbon is divided into sections, or groups, to help you find the tool you need.
The ribbon tools adjust depending on which tab you select. So, when you open each tab, you’ll see a different set of tools. Additionally, when you open a tab, it’s selected and you’ll see it underlined
Because there are many tools on the ribbon for each tab, here are just some of the most commonly used tabs and options.
The Home tab’s ribbon contains the most basic actions you’d perform when creating a document. You have the Clipboard group to copy, cut, and paste; the Font group for style, size, bold, italics, and color; the Paragraph group for alignment, lists, spacing, and indents ; and the Styles group with preformatted options such as titles, subtitles, headings, quotes, and emphasis.
You can also enable dictation, shop for add-ins, and open the Word Editor.
The Insert tab is where you go when you want to insert items aside from text in your document. You have the Illustrations group for pictures, shapes, icons, and charts; the Media group for video and audio; and the Header & Footer group for adding these document items.
You’ll also see tools to add a table, hyperlink, comment, WordArt, equations, and symbols.
The Draw tab lets you use pens, markers, and highlighters to draw on your document . You can also format the background, convert ink to a shape or math, and use the stencil.
The Design tab gives you ways to change the appearance or style of your document. You can select from Themes, which provide colors and fonts, and Document Formatting, which provides structure with titles and headings.
You also have Page Background tools for adding a watermark , changing the background color, and applying page borders.
The Layout tab lets you change the structure of a document. You have the Page Setup group to adjust the margins, orientation, size, columns, and breaks; the Paragraph group for indent and spacing settings ; and the Arrange group for wrapping text, aligning objects, and moving items forward or backward.
The References tab is where you go to add a table of contents , citations, a bibliography, captions, footnotes , and a table of figures. You can also use the Researcher tool and mark entries for things like an index and table of authorities.
The Mailings tab provides tools for setting up a mail merge in Word . You can create letters, emails, labels, envelopes, and a directory. All tools on this tab are for mail merge.
The Review tab contains tools for spelling and grammar checking, accessibility checking, translating, and language. You’ll also use this tab if you collaborate with others on the document and want to track the changes everyone makes.
The View tab allows you to switch from Print Layout to Web Layout to Outline or Draft view. You can also show or hide tools like the ruler and gridlines, zoom in and out, display multiple pages at once, and arrange Word windows if you have more than one open.
While you’ll always see the above tabs in Word by default, you may also see a few temporary tabs display. These tabs appear when you select (click) an item in your document and disappear when you deselect the item.
For example, if you insert a shape, you’ll see the Shape Format tab display, or if you insert an image, you’ll see the Picture Format tab display.
Each temporary tab provides you with ribbon tools specific to the item. Here, you can see we selected a shape that we inserted and the Shape Format tab displays on the right of the tab row. Tools on the ribbon allow us to format the shape and text inside it, as well arrange and resize the shape.
Now that you have the basics for using Microsoft Word, be sure to explore the tabs and tools to see how they can help you create fantastic documents. When you’re ready to move on, check out our other Word articles like things you didn’t know you could do in Word , along with tricks that can boost your Word workflow .
In terms of world-changing technologies, ChatGPT has truly made a massive impact on the way people think about writing and coding in the short time that it's been available.
However, this ability has come with a significant downside, particularly in education, where students are tempted to use ChatGPT for their own papers or exams. That brand of plagiarism prevents students from learning as much as they could and has given teachers a whole new headache: how to detect AI use.
Posts on X are popping up reporting that Microsoft has signed a development and supply contract with Samsung Display for micro-OLED displays.
The information originates from a Korean tech site, The Elec, which claims that Microsoft wants "hundreds of thousands" of these displays for an XR device designed for gaming and media consumption. In other words, a competitor for the Vision Pro -- or rather, another competitor for the Vision Pro.
Upgrading to Windows 11 comes with a few requirements, and that includes a bump in random access memory (RAM). And with Windows 10 nearing the end of support, many users will soon need to consider switching to Windows 11 regardless of how much memory it consumes.
Windows 11, while it introduces a host of new features, may consume more RAM than its predecessor, but the amount of memory that it uses is not universal. Below, we'll explain what RAM is, explore how much RAM Windows 11 actually uses, and how to lower that amount if your PC is having a hard time. Windows 11: RAM usage when idle

New York Yankees ' slugger Giancarlo Stanton was activated from the injured list on July 29 after missing a month of action due to a strained left hamstring.
Since then, Stanton has a .191 batting average with a .633 OPS, 9 hits, 2 home runs, 7 RBIs, 4 runs scored, and 11 strikeouts over 13 games.
The 34-year-old went 0-for-4 during the Yankees' 4-0 loss to the Detroit Tigers on Saturday. Stanton then spoke out about his current hitting form when speaking with the media postgame.
"Decent," Stanton said when asked about how he's feeling with his at-bats since returning from injury, per YES Network . "It could always be better."
The entire Yankees' offense went stagnant against the Tigers' starting pitcher Keider Montero, who pitched five scoreless innings while allowing just two hits, two walks, and tallying five strikeouts.
Montero entered Saturday's game with a 5.76 ERA. Yet, Stanton made it clear that him and his teammates are always expecting the best versions of the pitchers they're matched up against.
"He was mixing up well," Stanton said of Montero when asked what made the 24-year-old pitcher so tough on Saturday. "His heater also... the sinker and the four-seam. And yeah, good placement.
"You gotta expect that out of everybody," Stanton added of Montero's performance. "It's our job to control the zone and pound 'em, no matter what the previous ERA was."
Following Saturday's loss, @M_Marakovits & the media spoke with Giancarlo Stanton. #YANKSonYES pic.twitter.com/PftMpfJh0Y — YES Network (@YESNetwork) August 17, 2024
While the Yankees are just 5-5 in their last 10 games, they still hold a one-game lead over the Baltimore Orioles in the AL East.
Stanton's return to form would be a huge asset for New York as they continue pushing toward the playoffs.

Damon Gulczynski wants to make sure you’re paying attention.

THURSDAY PUZZLE — Verbal communication is a funny thing. I might say something to someone and assume the person heard me correctly, both in words and intent. Successful communication, however, does not happen as often as we would like.
Damon Gulczynski’s puzzle isn’t difficult, but it may be easier to solve if you really focus on what he’s saying in the clues. I needed to repeat them to myself a few times before I understood what was going on. At some point, you may even slap your forehead, saying, “Ohh, that’s what he meant,” followed by, “You know what? That’s pretty clever.”
Eggcorns are words or phrases that are misheard or misinterpreted. If the misinterpretation occurs in a musical lyric, it is called a mondegreen . (Think “There’s a bathroom on the right” instead of “There’s a bad moon on the rise” in “ Bad Moon Rising ” by Creedence Clearwater Revival.)
Mr. Gulczynski has written some crafty theme clues that contain eggcorns, and, once you understand what he means, the answers will make much more sense.
I can tell you, for example, and with apologies to the French, that Americans don’t think of the EIFFEL TOWER as a [Rod-shaped parasite]. We might, however, refer to it as a “Paris sight” or “site” (both are appropriate here).
