Kabaddi is a very popular game in India and is native to the state of Tamil Nadu. Kabaddi is the national sport of Bangladesh and is played extensively in India and Pakistan. It is quite prevalent in the Indian states of Bihar, Punjab, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka. The sport is also known by other names such as Kaudi, Pakaada and Himoshika in different regions. Both; men and women play it. The highest governing body of Kabaddi is The International Kabaddi Federation.

It is played between two teams. Each team has a total of 7 members in it. In every round, a person from one team knows as the “raider” goes to the court of the other team. His or her motive is to tag as many people of the other team as possible, known as “defenders” in a single breath. The raider has to do all of this and come back to his court without being tackled by the other team’s defenders. When a raider returns to his side of the court successfully, he scores points whereas the other team scores a point if they are able to stop the raider.

The game kabaddi originated in the Tamil region and was spread throughout south-east Asia during the Tamil Empire. The name kabaddi originates from a Tamil word meaning “holding hands.” This game was said to be played by Gautama Buddha for recreational purposes. India was the first country to play kabaddi as a competitive sport by organising competitions and was also the pioneer in setting up an All India Kabaddi Federation.

• Each team should constitute a total of 12 players of whom 7 should play, and 5 should be substitutes.
• Every match should be looked after by 6 officials: one scorer, two assistant scorers, one referee and two umpires.
• The duration of the match is two halves of 20 minutes each with a 5-minute break in between.
• In order to prove that he or she hasn’t taken another breath, the raider has to continuously keep saying the word “KABADDI” from the time he has entered the other team’s court, till the time he comes back to his court.
• Defenders are only allowed to grab the raiders by their limbs or torso. They cannot hold onto their hair, clothes or any place else.

This tournament started in 2004, i.e. 16 years ago. It was subsequently held in the year 2007 and 2016 as well. All three times, India stood at the top. The most recent Kabaddi world cup was held in Malaysia in the year 2019. It was the largest kabaddi tournament ever played. In 1955, First Kabaddi Indian National Championship was held in Calcutta.  It was here that women played competitively for the first time.  Although this thigh slapping, full body contact sport doesn’t seem to be very popular with the ladies, it is fancied by men worldwide, yet rarely seen on TV. The Amateur Kabaddi Federation of India (AKFI) was founded in 1973. It is the national game of Bangladesh and the state game of Tamil Nadu, Punjab and Andhra Pradesh in India. Kabaddi is the Only Game being played in all the 3 versions of Asian Games i.e. Asian Games, Asian Indoor Games and Asian Beach Games.

In the international team version of kabaddi, two teams of seven members each occupy opposite halves of a field of 10m x 13m in case of men and 8m x 11m in case of women. Each has three supplementary players held in reserve. The game is played with 20 minute halves and a five minute halftime break during which the teams exchange sides. Two teams occupy opposite halves of a field and take turns sending a “raider” into the other half, in order to win points by tackling members of the opposing team; the raider then tries to return to his own half, holding his breath and chanting “kabaddi, kabaddi, kabaddi” during the whole raid. Meanwhile, defenders must form a chain, for example, by linking hands; if the chain is broken, a member of the defending team is sent off. The goal of the defenders is to stop the raider from returning to the home side before taking a breath.

The raider is sent off the field if: 1) the raider takes a breath before returning or 2) the raider crosses boundary line or 3) A part of the raider’s body touches the ground outside the boundary (except during a struggle with an opposing team member). Each time a player is out the opposing team earns a point. A team scores a bonus of two points, called a lona, if the entire opposing team is declared out. At the end of the game, the team with the most points wins.

India is unsurmontable champions of Kabaddi World Cup, since it was first played in 2004 and then in 2007 and 2010. Iran is the next most successful nation being twice runner-up. Pakistan was the runner-up in 2010. Kabaddi World Cup 2011 is scheduled to be played in India.

I love athletics. For me playing sports is fun and exhilarating. I enjoy the social aspect, the competition, and the skills it takes to play just about any game or team sport. My body has become a fine-tuned machine because of the skills I have developed.

Out of all the sports, there are, I enjoy Kabaddi the most. I grew up playing it and despite any disagreements the game never gets old. It is fun to try to tag the other players and run up the score.

One aspect I like is that it is a simple game to play. There are no balls to learn how to dribble or bounce. There is no special equipment outside of the team uniform and there are no walls or other obstacles that you can run into and hurt yourself.

Kabaddi is pure clean fun that allows me to spend time with my friends staying healthy and enjoying the fresh air if we play outside. The lack of equipment means that we have to use our minds, create a great strategy and be able to move fast in order to win the game. Those aspects really appeal to me.

In some ways, Kabaddi is like chess. You use your mind, create strategies and try to move out of danger as fast as you can in chess as well. Outwitting my opponents is far more attractive than trying to beat them physically like basketball or other physical athletic sports.

Of course, the women get the smaller playing field but I do not mind. The extra space to run allows me to stay in top shape and remain healthy. Another aspect I like is that a lot of my friends can play at the same time.

With 7 players on the field, very few are left out of the fun and the action. Of course, some versions have only 4 players but that is still large enough for everyone to enjoy themselves and play hard.

The one difficulty I always have trouble with is holding my breath and shouting all the time I am running. It is a challenge and training to get that right is not always fun. It is hard to say how many points I have cost my team because I just can’t get that requirement right.

Kabaddi is my hobby and there is a good reason for it being that way. I do not think I am good enough to play the game professionally. I would like to but my talents are not fully developed where I can match wits and stamina with those who have played professionally for years.

It would be exciting to have thousands of people cheering for me to get that winning point without sacrificing any. As it stands we have about 20 people cheering us on when we play on the weekends.

That may not be exciting or a large crowd but at least we get to entertain a few friends who can’t play and help them have a great time during the match. Usually, it is just our girlfriends who show up and cheer us on.

For me, that is enough and I am content with making her proud. I may not be a great player but in her eyes, I am a hero and that helps motivate me to practice hard and get better at the game.

Even when we lose she is there to help cheer me and make me feel better. That is one of the best reasons for playing Kabaddi. Having thereafter we finish means the world to me.

The simplicity of Kabaddi does not mean it is a bad sport to pay. Instead, that makes the game more fun as there are not a lot of tricks to master or equipment to fail. It is hard to imagine a better sport to play than this one.

The history of kabaddi  can be traced back to some 4,000 years ago in India. And while it has had roots in the country all this time, its spread hasn’t been as deep.

However, the advent of Pro Kabaddi in 2014 managed to urbanize the rural game into a 21st-century thriller and the sport hasn’t looked back since. In fact, it remains one of the most-watched sports in cricket-crazy India.

Kabaddi is said to have started as a form of practicing combat moves for battles and wars in ancient times.

“It is believed that kabaddi was invented to develop defensive responses by an individual against group attacks and group’s responses to an individual attack,” according to the World Kabaddi Federation . In fact, the game of kabaddi starts with a single raider going into the opponent’s side, which comprises seven defenders.

“This is the only combative sport in which offence is an individual effort whereas defence is a group effort,” the WKF pointed out.

Kabaddi history in the Mahabharata

Deeply rooted in Indian culture for centuries, kabaddi has even found a mention in Hindu mythology. In the Sanskrit epic Mahabharata , It is said that the Pandava warrior, Arjuna, mastered kabaddi’s skills from Lord Krishna, who adored the sport. The story goes that Arjuna would breach enemy walls inconspicuously and would walk back unscathed with his kabaddi skills.

Another tale from the Mahabharata involves Arjuna’s son, Abhimanyu, who invaded the seven-tiered defence -- an army formation -- of the Kauravas. It draws sporting parallels to a single raider raiding in the opposition side of the mat, which often has seven defenders.

Apart from Mahabharata, it is also believed that Lord Gautam Buddha used to play kabaddi during his leisure time.

Kabaddi’s origin: India or Iran?

It is a popular belief that kabaddi originated from the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. In India, the sport had different names in different states before its establishment as the sport it’s recognised today. It was called Chedugudu or Hu-Tu-Tu in the southern part of the country, while it was referred to as Hadudu (for men) and Kit-Kit (for women) in the east.

Some argue that the sport originated in Iran about 5,000 years ago. “My hometown, Sistan, was where it was first found,” claimed Meraj Sheykh, a notable kabaddi player from Iran. 

“Several ancient books spoke about it too. We were the original founders of the game, not India,” Meraj told ESPN India.

It wasn’t until the early 20th century that the sport finally got its recognition. In 1918, the first official rules and regulations of kabaddi were brought into effect before it was declared as the national sport of India. However, it took five years to print those documents for circulation.

In 1923, an all India tournament of kabaddi was held in Baroda and since then, several national-level tournaments have been organised across the country.

Kabaddi in Olympics and Asian Games

Kabaddi in India got its first international exposure during the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin. Although the sport wasn’t officially a part of the sporting extravaganza, a 35-member kabaddi team from Hanuman Vyayam Prasarak Mandal (HVPM), an educational institute in Amravati, was invited to demonstrate the antics in Berlin.

The team performed at the Congress of Physical Education a day before the commencement of the Olympics leaving spectators amused. The team, eventually, received medals on the final day of the Berlin Olympics .

The widespread recognition of the sport saw the establishment of the All India Kabaddi Federation (AIKF) in 1950, which staged the first men's and women’s national tournament in 1955 in Chennai and Kolkata respectively, after running it as a demonstration sport in the inaugural 1951 Asian Games . 

In 1972, the Amateur Kabaddi Federation of India (AKFI) was formed to promote the game in India’s neighbouring countries. The decision bore fruit as the first Asian Kabaddi Championship was held in 1980 where Japan, Nepal, Malaysia, Bangladesh and India contested. The Indian national kabaddi team defeated Bangladesh in the final to become the first-ever champion.

In 1982, the game was once again added as a demonstration sport in the 1982 Asian Games before it was finally established as a medal sport in the 1990 Asiad. India have always been a superior side in the Asian Games, winning all but one of the eight finals since 1990. It wasn’t until 2018 that their winning streak was halted by Iran in the final.

Kabaddi World Cup offers glory

Eventually, the sport made way for the Kabaddi World Cup in 2004, which was hosted by India in Mumbai. 

Twelve teams participated in the competition, and the Indian kabaddi team asserted its domination by going unbeaten throughout the tournament before lifting the title by defeating Iran 56-28 in the final.

Till date, as many as three Kabaddi World Cups ( standard style ) have been hosted -- all in India -- and all the three finals have seen India beating Iran for the trophy. The 2016 Kabaddi World Cup , however, holds a special place in the sport as this was the first time a world cup for women was hosted.

Pro Kabaddi takes it to the masses

However, it wasn’t until 2014 that the sport got its due. The start of Pro Kabaddi elevated the status of the sport manifold by taking a rural pastime to primetime television nationwide. Till date, as many as seven PKL seasons have been played and as many as five different teams have lifted the title. 

In its seven seasons, stars likes Anup Kumar , Pardeep Narwal , Rahul Chaudhari , Deepak Niwas Hooda and Ajay Thakur have dominated the sport in raiding, while Manjit Chhillar , Ravinder Pahal , Fazel Atrachal i and Sandeep Narwal have been solid at the back.

A sport that has its roots bestowed in India has come a long way, and it is certain to make massive strides in the years to come. As per Google’s ‘Year in Search 2019’ report, the Pro Kabaddi league generated a whopping nine per cent growth in viewership with 1.2 billion impressions. The basic rules of kabaddi were formalized in India in the early 20th century and published in 1923. The game received international exposure when it was demonstrated by an Amravati-based sports organization at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin , and it was included as an event in the Indian Olympic Games held in Calcutta (now Kolkata) two years later. Following its formation in 1950, the Kabaddi Federation of India organized national championships for men beginning in 1952 and for women beginning in 1955. • हमलावर एक ही सांस में विरोधी टीम के प्रत्येक खिलाड़ी को छूने पर एक अंक अर्जित करता है। बचाव करने वाली टीम को एक अंक मिलता है, अगर वे विरोधी को सफलतापूर्वक पकड़ लेते हैं।
• जिन खिलाड़ियों को पाले से बाहर घोषित किया जाता है, उन्हें प्रत्येक अंक अर्जित करने पर खेल में वापस लाया जा सकता है।

वर्ष 2014 में प्रो-कबड्डी लीग के लॉन्च ने भारत में कबड्डी को ग्लैमर दिया था। यह क्रिकेट की इंडियन प्रीमियर लीग (IPL) के बाद दूसरा सबसे ज़्यादा देखा जाने वाला खेल आयोजन बन गया। इस लीग ने कई ग्रामीण भारतीय खिलाड़ियों को राष्ट्रीय और अंतरराष्ट्रीय मंचों पर अपनी प्रतिभा दिखाने के लिए एक मंच प्रदान किया। जिससे उन्हें आजीविका और जीविका का साधन मिला। क्रिकेट, फुटबॉल और बास्केटबॉल के विपरीत, कुछ प्रतिभाशाली खिलाड़ियों के बावजूद कबड्डी में ज़्यादा प्रतियोगिताएँ नहीं होती थीं। प्रो-कबड्डी लीग ने इसे बदल दिया है।  

कबड्डी सिर्फ़ एक खेल नहीं है। यह भारत की समृद्ध सांस्कृतिक विरासत का प्रमाण है और कई महत्वाकांक्षी एथलीटों के लिए आशा की किरण है। प्राचीन काल से आधुनिक युग तक की इसकी यात्रा इस गतिशील खेल की कालातीत अपील और स्थायी महत्व को रेखांकित करती है। यह एक ऐसा खेल है जिसे खेलने के लिए आपको अधिक पैसे खर्च नहीं करने पड़ते हैं, केवल कुछ लोगों की टीम बनाकर आप इसे खेल सकते हैं।

कबड्डी एक संपर्क टीम खेल है जो सात खिलाड़ियों की दो टीमों के बीच खेला जाता है, जिसकी उत्पत्ति प्राचीन भारत में हुई थी।

यह दिवस वर्ष 2019 से प्रत्येक वर्ष 24 मार्च को मनाया जाता है।

कबड्डी का मैच आम तौर पर 40 मिनट (20 मिनट के दो हाफ) तक चलता है। मैच की शुरुआत दो टीमों के बीच सिक्का उछालने से होती है और विजेता यह तय कर सकता है कि पहले रेड करना है या बचाव करना है। प्रत्येक टीम को प्रत्येक हाफ में दो टाइम-आउट की अनुमति है।
