The paper aims to describe the characteristics and purposes of Pakistan Research Repository (PRR). A quantitative analysis of this repository is carried out by analyzing the content of the repository. A critical analysis of the entire growth strategy, population and web interface is also included in this paper. This study also proposes certain measures to make it more effective and efficient for archiving the research output of a nation. The study was designed to investigate issues relating to PRR and outline steps to develop a strategy to overcome these challenges.
Design/methodology/approach
This article focuses on quantitative aspects and critical analysis of PRR. A multi-tier research design was used to meet the objectives of the study. A web search was conducted, and information was drawn from documents available on the Web site of Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan, PRR and directories of open-access repositories; data were complemented by quantitative and critical analysis of the content of the repository. Information was also gathered by literature-based review of project documents which were created for the implementation of this project.
The paper has highlighted how far this repository has succeeded in bringing the research output from universities across Pakistan to the researcher community by analyzing the available content by institution, type, subject and year. This study has provided a valuable insight about the current status of PRR by identifying gaps in the content of the repository. The quantitative analysis of the repository shows that the creation of this repository was a landmark achievement, as it provided the opportunity to researchers, faculty and students for preserving, disseminating and furthering their existing knowledge at a national-level platform.
Research limitations/implications
This research article is a case study and focuses on PRR only. Therefore, researchers are encouraged to throw light on other repositories in Pakistan and sharing of resources among institutional repositories in Pakistan.
Practical implications
This study will be helpful for the administrative authorities of HEC and university faculty to plan for effective collection of content from the institutions and digitization of this content. The paper includes implications for the development of repositories at an institutional level in Pakistan.
Social implications
This paper will help in managing PRR, and it will ultimately lead to enhance and better manage research output in Pakistan.
Originality/value
This paper has identified the characteristics and purposes for creating a research repository at the national level and provided a critical view of policies and statistical view of the content of the repository.

Information has become a valued commodity in this age of globalization. Information centers all over the world are now better equipped to manage information due to advancement in Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). In this context, Institutional Repositories (IRs) provide a unique platform for information management through new ways of Information Storage and Retrieval (ISR) and digitization. The awareness regarding Open Access Publishing (OAP) and attitudes of IR users are very important contributing factors in success of any institutional repository. The paper is an attempt to highlight the necessary role of IR in building the academic capabilities of research scholars in South Asian region. This paper focuses on perception evaluation of research scholars regarding IR in terms of awareness, and availability of IR. A questionnaire based survey method has been employed to collect data from research scholars. It has been found that most of the participants aware of the existence of the IR. They showed that they are capable to use IR. The study will be helpful in providing practical implications for other institutions to initiate IR.

The study aimed to explore the level of accessibility and use of Institutional Repository (IR) among research scholars. It has also investigated the difference of opinion on the basis of participants’ gender, age and qualification. Further, the need of training and guidance to make effective use of IR has also incorporated. Survey based on questionnaire was employed to collected data from M. Phil. and PhD scholars studying at seven departments of COMSATS Institute of Information Technology, Lahore. The results showed that research scholars are accessing IR infrequently and they have limited access to the publications. They have accessed the IR for the fulfillment of their assignments. They mentioned that they need extensive training for efficient use of IR. In context of Pakistan, the study will be helpful for other universities and institutions to make effective and efficient use of IR.

The way information is stored, retrieved and displayed is now changing. Printed materials can now be retrieved in digitized format to support knowledge sharing among researchers and students. Many universities in Malaysia, especially Research Universities, are heading towards implementing digital content in their organization. Digital repositories are also one of the initiatives taken by academic libraries in Research Universities to move towards the establishment of digital libraries. Preserving records, mainly research articles, is a vital approach to increase visibility of researchers and to be on par with the initiatives from other higher ranked universities in the world. The purpose of this paper is to provide a summary of the experiences in setting up an institutional repository at the University of Malaya Library, focusing on some of the key issues that need to be considerred, the teamwork involved, the choices made and the challenges faced. The digital content produced now a days is enormous and in this connection libraries role at various level is crucial. Higher educational institutions generate and make available a quantum of digital academic and scholarly content. The crossover from print to electronic databases in the libraries is playing prominent role to collect, archive, maintain and publish the content. In this context, the establishment of institutional repository is an important step towards enhancing the visibility of the educational institute across the globe. Research Archive of Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad (RAIITH) is built and managed by using open source software (Eprints). Also it discusses about the methods used to collect, collate and publish scholarly content in RAIITH. The challenges come across during the implementation and the testing phase were well addressed. In addition, to complement the traditional citation-based metrics, the latest metric tool viz. Altmetric is structured for ...
Institutions globally have increasingly embraced Institutional Repositories (IRs) to collect, showcase, archive, and preserve their intellectual and scholarly output. Many benefits are gained from implementation of the platform including: the institution’s visibility, status and reputation is increased; authors get wider public access and visibility thus more citations for their work; long-term preservation of research; and the library benefits from its new role in information creation and distribution thus the opportunity to re-assert its importance in the face of declining user dependence on libraries for simple access to information (Sharif 2013). Despite the high uptake of IRs to manage institutions’ digital resources more effectively, little has been written on the experience of cross-border implementation. This paper seeks to fill this gap by presenting unique lessons learnt from the implementation of Digital Commons (DC), a proprietary hosted institutional repository platform...

Institutional repositories (IR) are digital collections that capture, collect, manage, disseminate, and preserve scholarly work created by the constituent members in individual institutions. This paper presents the results of an effort to develop and design an IR of Anjuman-i-Islam 's Kalsekar Technical Campus (AIKTC), New Panvel, and India. The web performance of AIKTC institutional repositories is examined. Its performance in archiving and sharing based on the Ranking Web of Repositories (RWR) is also analysed. The main aim of ranking and registration is to promote the development of open access by providing timely information about the growth and status ofrepositories throughout the world. Open access to research maximizes research access and thereby also research impact, making research more productive and effective. The repository is web-enabled using DSpace Digital Library software and can be accessed online.

Institutional repository is a new scholarly publishing model for researchers and academic institutions. The idea is conceived to enable broader access and dissemination of knowledge as well as preservation for future use, which are the core roles of traditional libraries. However, digital technology facilitates the adoption of institutional repository and makes libraries responsible for its management. Thus, libraries have reclaimed their function of preserving knowledge which has hitherto been hindered by digital right management policies whose emphasis is on access rather than ownership, and which has prohibited libraries from claiming ownership of subscribed materials. Institutional repository roles in enhancing academic research, faculty-librarian collaboration, library services and collections, as well as the roles of libraries in promoting and preserving academic research knowledge for posterity cannot be undermined. To achieve these laudable roles, preservation policy for repositories is of paramount importance. The study thus provides a review of different literatures to explore the key roles of institutional repositories in promoting academic research. The review of literature revealed that lack of adoption of repository policies pose challenges to institutional repositories in the preservation of academic research. The analysis of the Registry of Open Access Repository Mandates and Policies (ROARMAP) statistics showed a partial adoption of repository policies among research institutions. It is recommended that adoption of preservation policies for repository content should spread across borders and form prerequisite for establishing institutional repositories. This review suggested other factors to consider in 41
