MS Dhoni Biography: The legendary Captain MS Dhoni is one of the most successful captains across the globe. He is known for his coolness and ability to handle pressure at crucial times. Under his captaincy, India has won three ICC trophies.

MS Dhoni Biography

Biography: Mahendra Singh Dhoni or as he is commonly known as MS Dhoni is an Indian cricketer who represents India on the International stage. On the domestic level, Dhoni plays first-class cricket for Jharkhand.

MS Dhoni Family 

The biography Started: Dhoni was born on 7 July 1981 in Ranchi, Bihar (now in Jharkhand). He was raised in a Hindu Rajput family. His parents belonged to the village of Lwali is in the Lamgara block of Almora District, Uttarakhand. Dhoni’s father, Pan Singh worked in junior management positions in MECON.

Dhoni has a sister named Jayanti Gupta and a brother named Narendra Singh Dhoni. On 4 July 2010, Dhoni got married to his schoolmate from DAV Jawahar Vidya Mandir, Sakshi Singh Rawat. The couple gave birth to a beautiful girl on 6 February 2015 and named her Ziva.

MS Dhoni in Indian Military

MS Dhoni is a qualified paratrooper in the Indian army after he completed five parachute training jumps from Indian Army aircraft in the Agra training camp in 2019.

MS Dhoni – Career

In 1995, he joined the Commando cricket club and stood behind the stumps for them for the next three years. He was then picked for the Vinoo Mankad Trophy Under-16 Championship in the 1997/98 season and performed well.

In 1998, Dhoni started to play for the Central Coal Fields Limited (CCL) team. During his time at the CCL, Deval Sahay would gift him fifty rupees for every 6 that he scored in Sheesh Mahal tournament cricket games. Sahay then pushed for Dhoni’s selection in the Bihar team.

Domestic Career

Dhoni was selected in 1998 by Deval Sahay to play for the Central CoalFields Limited (CCL) team. This was the first time that Dhoni stepped into professional cricket. Dhoni showed exceptional talent which impressed Deval Sahay who used his contacts in Bihar Cricket Association to push for his selection in the Bihar team.

Dhoni debuted for the senior Bihar Ranji Team for the 1999–2000 season. He was also included in the Bihar U-19 squad for the 1998–99 season where he scored 176 runs in 7 innings from 5 matches.

Dhoni however was not picked for the East Zone U-19 squad (CK Nayudu Trophy) or the Rest of India squad (MA Chidambaram Trophy and Vinoo Mankad Trophy). Dhoni made the first-class debut in Ranji Trophy debut for Bihar in the 1999–2000 season. He was just eighteen years old at that moment.

After playing Ranji Trophy for over three years, Dhoni was picked over international cricketer Deep Dasgupta to represent East Zone. It was then that Dhoni stepped into the limelight. Dhoni was scouted by BCCI’s small-town talent-spotting initiative TRDW and discovered by TRDO Prakash Poddar.

Dhoni was selected for India A squad for a tour of Zimbabwe and Kenya. His performances on that tour earned him the attention of the likes of Sourav Ganguly and Ravi Shastri.

The Chennai Super Kings contracted Dhoni’s services for US$1.5 million in IPL’s inaugural season in 2008. He was the most expensive player in the IPL for the first season auctions.

Dhoni captained Chennai Super Kings to victory in 2010 and 2011, 2018 and 2021 Indian Premier League titles, and the 2010 and 2014 Champions League T20 titles.

After the CSK was banned for two years, Dhoni was subsequently bought by Rising Pune Supergiant for US$1.9 Million in 2016. He was the captain that year but after his team finished in 7th place Steven Smith replaced him.

• MS Dhoni’s CSK reached the final for a record 8th time in 2019 but was stopped by a resurgent Mumbai Indians side which won the final by a whisker.
• Under MS Dhoni’s captaincy, in IPL 2021 final CSK beat KKR by 27 runs and won the trophy for the fourth time.
• MS Dhoni’s side had a poor run during the IPL 2022 season where they won only 4 matches out of 14 group stage matches and completed as second last in the table.

MS Dhoni International Career

Dhoni arrived on the international stage when the Indian ODI team was struggling to find its Wicketkeeper-Batsman. We saw Rahul Dravid in the 2000s and then the arrival of wicket-keeper/batsman from the junior ranks such as Parthiv Patel and Dinesh Karthik.

But they didn’t fit the team combination well. Then came Dhoni, who was picked for the ODI squad for the Bangladesh tour in 2004/05.

Dhoni had the most disastrous start to a career that anyone can ever ask for. Getting run out for a duck on debut is the last thing you want. But, despite ordinary performances in his inaugural series against the Bangladesh cricket team, Dhoni was selected for the series against Pakistan. ‘

Dhoni scored his first century in his fifth one-day international. He scored 148 in Visakhapatnam off only 123 deliveries. Thus began the Dhoni era.

His last ODI inning came against New Zealand in the 2019 WC Semifinal where he ended his ODI journey in the same way he started–with a runout. Although there were speculations that MSD would stage a comeback after the 2020 IPL, the unforeseeable circumstances due to COVID-19 ensured that MS Dhoni played his last international game without any farewell.

Dhoni in World Cup Tournaments:

MS Dhoni has featured in four World Cups, 2 as a captain. Under his captaincy, India lifted the World Cup in 2011 and reached the semifinals in 2015.

2007 ICC Cricket World Cup:

Owing to good performances in the middle order as well as behind the stumps, MSD was selected for the World Cup in the Caribbean. India had a disappointing campaign as they lost two of the three group games against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Dhoni had horrible innings as he got out duck in both the games. The team, including Dhoni, was highly criticized for their performances. Around 200 fans attacked Dhoni’s under-construction home in Ranchi after the Bangladesh loss.

2011 ICC Cricket World Cup

By the 2011 WC, Dhoni was the captain of all three Tests, T20I, and ODI’s. Dhoni’s major contribution with the bat came in the finals against Sri Lanka. Chasing 275 at the Wankhede, Dhoni promoted himself up the order after Sachin, Sehwag, and  Virat Kohli lost their wickets early.

Dhoni and Gambir then built a steady partnership to stabilize the Indian innings. Dhoni had scored 60 from 60 balls, after which started accelerating. He scored the winning six of Numan Kulaeskara, a shot which no one will forget, and won the Man of the Match award.

Dhoni’s crucial decision to promote himself up the order to put off Muralitharan’s spin threat and right-hand-left-hand combo showed why he was one of India’s best captains.

2015 ICC Cricket World Cup 

Under Dhoni’s captaincy in the 2015 World Cup held in Australia and New Zealand, the Men in Blue were able to reach the semi-finals with comfort, beating Bangladesh in the quarter-finals. However, they went on to lose to hosts Australia in the semi-finals at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

India had won 7 consecutive matches in this World Cup and won 11 straight games overall in World Cups. After beating Bangladesh, MSD became the first non-Australian captain to win 100 ODI matches, and the first Indian captain to hold the record.

He scored 237 runs in 6 matches with an average of 59.25. His 45* and 85* against West Indies and Zimbabwe helped India on the road to the semi-finals. He scored 65 against Australia in the semis but was not able to prevent the Aussies to run over India on their way to glory.

2019 ICC Cricket World Cup

Dhoni played his last World Cup at the age of 38. This time around, he was India’s wicketkeeper leading into the tournament. Despite his handy knocks against South Africa, Australia, and West Indies, MSD was primarily criticized for his strike rate and ‘lack of intent’.

In the semis against New Zealand, Dhoni scored a fighting half-century and built a promising partnership with Ravinder Jadeja after the top-order fell. It looked like India were on their way to the final. But, Dhoni got runout at a crucial stage, breaking a billion dreams.

Test Career

Dhoni’s performances in ODIs against Sri Lanka opened the doors for Test Cricket for him. Dhoni replaced Dinesh Karthik in December 2005 and was the last man standing in his 30-run journey in his debut test innings.

Dhoni went on to score his maiden half-century in the second Test. He was very aggressive with it too, as the half-century came off 51 balls. We witnessed Dhoni in making who was soon going to lead India to the number 1 spot in Tests.

T20 International Career

MSD has been a part of the Indian T20 team from the start. He was one of the 11 players to play India’s first-ever T20 international match against South Africa in 2006. Despite his duck, a lucky India won the match. However, when they faced the Proteas in the 2007 ICC T20 Championships, Dhoni scored 45 as India won the match.

Since then Dhoni went on to lead the Indian team in the inaugural T20 championships and various T20 international victories. Apart from his role as a wicketkeeper-captain, he played an important role as a finisher for India in T20s.

T20 World Cups

Just before the inaugural T20 World Cup 2007, MS Dhoni was named to lead the team. India ended up lifting the trophy. Apart from his role as a captain, MSD played an essential role in the middle order as a finishing batsman. His innings in the semi-finals against Australia helped India to a 15-run victory and a place in the finals.

While he was unable to push India to a satisfying target. MSD’s captainship and cool-headedness in the final over led India to a victory against Pakistan in the final. Dhoni also played an important role in India’s run to the final of the 2014 T20 World Championships. He was declared in the Team of the tournament.

MS Dhoni Double Century

MSD has one double century which came in the first test against Australia at Chennai. He scored 224 runs as India posted 572 on the scoreboard. India won the match by 8 wickets. In the match, Mahi broke three records.

He posted the third-highest score by an Indian captain, the highest Test score by an Indian wicket-keeper, and the highest score by a wicket-keeper-captain.

MS Dhoni Retirement

MS Dhoni who bags all three ICC trophies for Team India announced his retirement on August 15, 2020. Dhoni is expected to play the T20 WC which is scheduled post-IPL 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the IPL 2020 has been rescheduled to play between September and November 2020.

Without any prior announcement, Dhoni followed by Suresh Raina announced their retirement earlier to play IPL 2020. Though MSD retired from ODI, Tests, and T20 his love towards CSK remains in peak. Where he confirms to continue his career in the yellow jersey.

• MS Dhoni is the co-owner of Ranchi Rays (Ranchi-based Hockey Club) along with the Sahara India Pariwar. Ranchi Rays is a franchise of the Hockey India League.
• Along with Abhishek Bachchan and Vita Dani, MS Dhoni is the co-owner of Chennaiyin FC (Chennai-based football club). It is a franchise of the Indian Super League.

Last week, South Africa celebrated the start of the SA20 competition with a lot of fanfare. Coach Stephen Fleming and other members of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) coaching staff have ties to the Joburg Super Kings (JSK). Dhoni is unable to do this, though. As no Indian player is eligible to take part in the competition due to BCCI regulations, until and unless a player retires from Indian cricket, including the IPL.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni or MS Dhoni is an Indian International Cricketer who has retired from International Cricket. MS Dhoni is the only captain in the history of Cricket to win all the ICC trophies. The legendary cricketer celebrates his birthday on July 7. When he turned 40, fans and the cricket fraternity took to social media to wish Captain Cool on his birthday. 

MS Dhoni: Birth, Family and Education 

MS Dhoni was born on July 7, 1981, in Ranchi, Bihar (present-day Jharkhand) in a Hindu Rajput family to Pan Singh and Devki Devi. His paternal village is in the Lamgara block in Almora, Uttarakhand. His father, Pan Singh, moved from Uttarakhand to Ranchi and worked in junior management positions in MECON. Dhoni has a sister and a brother-- Jayanti Gupta (sister) and Narendra Singh Dhoni (Brother). 

Dhoni did his schooling at DAV Jawahar Vidya Mandir, Ranchi, Jharkhand and excelled in multiple sports such as badminton, football and cricket. He played as a goalkeeper for his football team and played cricket for a local club. 

Dhoni showed impressive wicket-keeping skills at the Commando Cricket Club during 1995-98 and was picked up for Vinoo Mankad Trophy Under-16 Championship for the 1997-98 session and played well. After completing High School, Dhoni focussed on Cricket. 

MS Dhoni: Personal Life

Before marrying his schoolmate Sakshi Singh Rawat, MS Dhoni fell in love with Priyanka Jha, whom he met in his early 20s. At that time in the year 2002, Dhoni was trying his best to get selected in the Indian team. The same year, his girlfriend died in an accident. Dhoni also dated South Indian actress, Lakshmi Rai. Mahendra Singh Dhoni married Sakshi Singh Rawat, his school friend from DAV Jawahar Vidya Mandir, on July 4, 2010. At the time of their marriage, Sakshi was studying a hotel management course at Taj Bengal in Kolkata as a trainee. 

MS Dhoni: Career

In the year 1998, MS Dhoni was selected for the Central Coal Fields Limited (CCL) team. Till 1998, he played for the school cricket team and club cricket. Whenever Dhoni hit a six in Sheesh Mahal tournament cricket matches, he was gifted Rs 50 by Deval Sahay, who selected him for CCL. With the help of his excellent performance, CCL moved to A division. Deval Sahay was impressed with his dedication and cricket skills and pushed for his selection in the Bihar team. For the 1999-2000 season, he got selected in the senior Bihar Ranji Team at the age of 18. He was not selected for the East Zone U-19 squad (CK Nayudu Trophy) or the Rest of the India squad (MA Chidambaram Trophy and Vinoo Mankad Trophy).

Bihar U-19 team advanced to finals but couldn't make it. Later, he was selected for East Zone U-19 squad for the CK Nayudu trophy. While the East Zone lost all the matches, Dhoni finished last in the tournament. 

During 2002-2003, while playing in the Jharkhand Team for Ranji Trophy and Deodhar Trophy, Dhoni gained recognition for his lower-order contribution as well as hard-hitting batting style.

In the Duleep Trophy Finals, Dhoni was picked over International cricketer Deep Dasgupta to represent East Zone. Through TRDW ( BCCI's small-town talent-spotting initiative) Dhoni was spotted by Prakash Poddar (captain of Bengal in the 1960s) who sent a report to the National Cricket Academy. 

Dhoni was selected for India A team for a tour of Zimbabwe and Kenya. At Harare Sports Club, against Zimbabwe, Dhoni had 7 catches and 4 stumpings in the match. In a tri-nation tournament with Kenya, India A and Pakistan A; Dhoni helped the Indian team to chase their target of 223 runs with a half-century against the Pakistan team. He scored 362 runs in 6 innings with an average of 72.40. His excellent performance received the attention of the then Captain of the Indian Cricket Team-- Sourav Ganguly, Ravi Shastri, etc.  

After India A team, Dhoni was selected in the ODI team for the Bangladesh tour in 2004/05. In his debut match, Dhoni was run out for the duck. Despite playing an average series against Bangladesh, Dhoni was picked for the ODI series against Pakistan. In the second match of the series, Dhoni scored 148 runs in 123 balls and made a record for the highest score by an Indian wicket-keeper. 

He played in the first two matches in the Sri Lankan Bilateral ODI series that was held between October-November 2005. He was promoted to No. 3 in the third ODI held at Sawai Mansingh Stadium. Dhoni scored an unbeaten 183 off 145 balls against Sri Lanka in a winning cause. He received the Man of the Series award. In December 2015, Dhoni received a B-grade contract from the BCCI. 

In a series against Pakistan, Dhoni scored 72 runs off 46 balls in the third match, helped India to lead the series 2-1. In the final match, Dhoni scored 77 runs off 56 balls, helping India to win the series by 4-1. On April 20, 2006, he was ranked as the number one batsman in ICC ODI Rankings sidelining Ricky Ponting. India had disappointing tournaments-- DLF Cup 2006-07, 2006 ICC Champions Trophy. 

India crashed out of the 2007 Cricket World Cup and Dhoni was out for a Duck in the matches against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Due to Dhoni's poor performance in the 2007 World Cup, his house was vandalised by activists of JMM. After India exited from the World Cup in the first round, Dhoni's family was provided police protection. 

Dhoni was named vice-captain of the ODI team for the series against South Africa and England. In June 2007, Dhoni received an A Grade contract from the BCCI. In September 2007, for the World Twenty20 matches, Dhoni was elected as the captain of the Indian team. In September 2007, Dhoni shared a record with his idol Adam Gilchrist-- most dismissals in an innings in ODI.

In 2009, during the series between India and Australia, Dhoni scored 124 runs off 107 balls in the second ODI and 71 runs off 95 balls in the third ODI. On September 30, 2009, Dhoni took his first wicket in international cricket against West Indies in the Champions Trophy. In 2009, he topped the ICC ODI Batsman ranking. 

In 2011, Dhoni-led India to the finals with a victory over Australia in the quarter-finals and Pakistan in the finals. Dhoni helped India win by chasing a target of 275 against Sri Lanka in the finals with Gautam Gambhir and Yuvraj Singh. Dhoni finished the match with a historical six with a score of 91*. He bagged Man of the Match for his outstanding performance in the 2011 Cricket World Cup. 

In 2012, after the World Cup win, Pakistan toured India for a bilateral series for the first time in five years. India lost the series by 1-2. 

In 2013, India won ICC Champions Trophy and Dhoni became the first and the only captain in the history of cricket to claim all the ICC trophies. In the same year, he became the second India batsman after Sachin Tendulkar to score 1,000 or more ODI runs against Australia. 

During 2013-14, India toured South Africa and New Zealand but lost both the series. In 2014, India won the ODI series in England by 3-1 and in India by 2-1 against West Indies. 

During the 2015 Cricket World Cup, Dhoni became the first Indian captain to win all group stage matches in such a tournament. Despite a great start in the 2015 Cricket World Cup, India lost the title to the eventual champions-- Australia. 

In January 2017, Dhoni stepped down as the captain of the Indian team in all the limited-over formats. In the ODI home series against England, he scored well and was named as a wicketkeeper of the 'Team of the Tournament' at the 2017 Champions Trophy and ODI XI of the year by Cricbuzz. 

In August 2017, during the ODI against Sri Lanka, he became the first wicket-keeper to effect 100 stumpings. 

After his excellent performance in ODI against Sri Lanka, Dhoni replaced  Dinesh Karthik as the Indian teams' Test wicket-keeper. In his debut match that was marred by rain, Dhoni scored 30 runs.

During January–February 2006, India toured Pakistan and Dhoni scored his maiden century off 93 balls at Faisalabad. 

In 2006, on the West Indies tour, he aggressively scored 69 runs in the first match while he improved his wicket-keeping skills and finished the series with 13 catches and 4 stumpings. 

In 2009, Dhoni scored two centuries against Sri Lanka and led to India's victory by 2-0. With this victory, India ranked No. 1 in test cricket for the first time in history.  

In the 2014-15 season, Dhoni played his last test series against Australia and captained the second and third test matches. Dhoni announced his retirement from the Test format, following the third test in Melbourne. In his last test match, Dhoni effected nine dismissals and broke Kumar Sangakkara record for stumpings with 134 in all the formats. 

In 2006, Dhoni was a part of India's first-ever Twenty20 international match against South Africa. In his debut match, he was out for a duck but effected two dismissals. 

On February 12, 2012, he made a 44 and led India to win their first-ever win over Australia. In 2014, ICC named him as the captain and wicketkeeper of the 'Team of the Tournament' for the T20 World Cup.

In 2007, MS Dhoni lead India to their first-ever World T20 match. He made his captaincy debut against Scotland but the match was washed off. In September 2007, he led the victory over Pakistan in the finals. 

In the 2019 Cricket World Cup, Dhoni was selected for the Indian team. Dhoni played well against South Africa, Australia and West Indies but was criticised for his strike rate against Afghanistan and England. In the semi-finals against New Zealand, Dhoni scored a half-century in the second innings but was run out at a very crucial stage. With his dismissal, India's World Cup run ended. 

In the first season of IPL (Indian Premier League), Dhoni was contracted by the Chennai Super Kings for US$1.5 million, becoming the most expensive player in the first season auctions. Under his captaincy, the team won 2010, 2011 and 2018 IPL titles. The team also won 2010 and 2014 Champions League T20 titles.

In 2016, Chennai Super Kings was suspended for two years and Dhoni was contracted by Rising Pune Supergiant to lead their team. However, the team finished at 7th place. In 2017, his team reached the finals but lost the title match to Mumbai Indians. 

In 2018, the ban on Chennai Super Kings was uplifted and the team returned to play the IPL. Dhoni was again contracted by CSK and led the team to win the third IPL title. In 2019, he again captained for CSK and the team emerged to be one of the strongest in the season. However, Mumbai Indians won the title.

MS Dhoni is a right-handed batsman and wicket-keeper. He is famously known for his lower-order attacking mode which he later changed due to his responsibility as a captain. He is also one of the fastest running men between the wickets. His Helicopter Shot technique is loved by all which was taught to him by his fellow player childhood friend Santosh Lal.

Autobiography Of M S Dhoni

Mahendra Singh Dhoni, commonly known as M S Dhoni, Dhoni, and Mahi, is a renowned Indian cricketer who has left an indelible mark in the world of cricket. He is best known for leading the Indian ODI team to its second World Cup victory in 2011, a feat that is etched in the memories of cricket fans worldwide. Dhoni made his ODI debut for the Indian national team on 23 December 2004 against Bangladesh and went on to serve as the captain of the Indian ODI team from 2007 to 2016. His exceptional cricketing skills, unmatched leadership qualities, and calm demeanor on and off the field have made him one of the most beloved and respected cricketers of all time.

M.S.Dhoni debuted as a Test player against Sri Lanka on 2nd December 2005 and led the team in Test cricket from 2008 to 2014. He is always remembered for his aggressive playing style, he is also admired as one of the best “finishers” in the limited format of the game.

Dhoni is also one of the most successful Indian captains and holds a number of records for his captaincy. Notably, the Indian team became the No.1 Test team in 2009 under his captaincy. He also led the Indian team to win the 2007 ICC World Twenty20 and the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy.

While his achievements in the IPL format often get overshadowed by his international records, he also helped his team, Chennai Super Kings, which appeared nine times in finals and out of which, CSK wins IPL four times in 2010, 2011, 2018, and 2021.

M S Dhoni completed his schooling at DAV Jawahar Vidya Mandir located in Shyamali, Ranchi, Jharkhand. Since his school days, he always had an interest in sports initially, he liked to play badminton and football. He was also the goalkeeper of his school football team.

While playing football, his coach sent him to fill the position of wicketkeeper at the Local Club’s cricket team. He surprised everyone with his spectacular performance as a wicketkeeper and was confirmed as a permanent wicketkeeper for three years in the Commando cricket club team.

During 1997-98, Dhoni got short-listed for Under-16 Championship in Vinoo Mankad Trophy. After his 10th standard, he took cricket seriously and thought to give a chance to it further in his career.

• In 1998, M S Dhoni, who had been playing only in school and club level cricket till then, was selected to play for the Central Coal Fields Limited (CCL) team. He impressed Deval Sahay, an ex-Bihar Cricket Association Vice-President, with his determination and hard-hitting skills, which opened up opportunities for him to play in First Class cricket.
• During the 1998-99 season, he failed to make it to the East Zone U-19 squad or Rest of India squad, but he was selected for the East Zone U-19 squad for the CK Nayudu trophy in the next season. Unfortunately, he could not perform well and his team finished last in the tournament.
• He made his Ranji Trophy debut for the Bihar cricket team during the 1999-2000 season with a score of 68 not out in the second innings. He scored his maiden first-class century during a game against Bengal in the following season, but his team lost the game.
• Coming from a middles class Indian family, money was not a luxury for him. In fact, at the age of 20, he moved to Midnapore, West Bengal, after securing a Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE) job at Kharagpur railway station via sports quota. He served as a railway employee from 2001 to 2003.
• In 2001, he was selected to play the Duleep Trophy for the East Zone; however, Bihar Cricket Association could not communicate this information to Dhoni in time, as he was located in Midnapore. He learned this at a time when his team had already reached Agartala, the venue for the match. While one of his friends managed to hire a car for him to reach Kolkata Airport for a flight, the car broke down halfway, resulting in Deep Dasgupta serving as the wicketkeeper.
• During the 2002-03 season, he continued to perform well in the Ranji Trophy and the Deodhar Trophy, which helped him get recognition. As part of the East Zone team, he won the Deodhar Trophy in the 2003-2004 season, in which he scored another century.
• He was eventually picked for India A squad for a tour of Zimbabwe and Kenya during 2003-04. He took 7 catches and had stumpings during a match against Zimbabwe XI. He also helped his team defeat Pakistan A in back-to-back matches, scoring a half-century in the first, followed by two centuries. • Following his superb performance in first-class cricket, M S Dhoni was selected to play in the national ODI team for India’s tour of Bangladesh in 2004-05. Unfortunately, he got run out for a duck in his debut match and could not perform very well during the rest of the series.
• Despite poor performance in his debut series, the selectors showed faith in him by selecting him for the Pakistan ODI series that followed. Dhoni didn’t disappoint them as he scored a record-breaking 148, the most by an Indian wicketkeeper-batsman, in his fifth ODI match.

• During the India-Pakistan ODI series of 2005-06, he contributed 68, 72 not out, 2 not out, and 77 not out in four of the five matches to help his team win the series 4-1. With his consistent performance, he dethroned Ricky Ponting to reach the top of the ICC ODI Rankings for batsmen on 20 April 2006, even though just for a week.
• In the two series against West Indies and Sri Lanka before the 2007 Cricket World Cup Tournament, M S Dhoni showed terrific performance with an average of over 100. However, he failed to perform during the World Cup and the Indian team could not go beyond the group stage in the tournament.

• M S Dhoni was selected into the Indian Test Team as a wicketkeeper during the series against Sri Lanka in 2005. He scored 30 runs in his debut match, which was interrupted by rain. He scored his first half-century in the following match, helping India win by a big margin.

- MS Dhoni led India to three ICC titles but he is nearly as famous for his exploits in the yellow of Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League.

- Dhoni, known as CSK's "Thala" (leader), captained the franchise to ten finals in their first 14 IPL seasons and won them five titles - in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021 and 2023 . He's led them to the playoffs in 12 editions, making them the most consistent team in the IPL. In a surprise move on the eve of the IPL 2024 season opener, Dhoni stepped down as CSK captain and was succeeded by Ruturaj Gaikwad.

- Dhoni was bought by CSK at the first IPL auction in 2008 and - barring a handful of games in 2022 - has been their captain ever since. No other player has led an IPL team for so long. Only when CSK was banned for two years on corruption charges - in 2016 and 2017 - did Dhoni play for another team in the IPL: Rising Pune Super Giant(s).

- Dhoni's most memorable season with the bat was 2018, when he scored 455 runs at an average of 75.83 and strike rate of 150.66 to lead CSK to the title in their comeback season following the ban.

MS Dhoni probably ranks as the third-most popular Indian cricketer ever, behind only Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli. He emerged from a cricketing backwater, the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand, and made it to the top with a home-made batting and wicketkeeping technique, and a style of captaincy that scaled the highs and hit the lows of both conservatism and unorthodoxy.

Under Dhoni's leadership, India won the top prize in all formats: leading the Test rankings for 18 months starting December 2009, winning the 50-over World Cup in 2011, and the T20 world title on his captaincy debut in 2007.

He seemingly emerged fully formed at 23, when he blasted two centuries in a triangular 50-over tournament for India A in Nairobi. Long-haired and fearless, he soon swaggered into international cricket, and became an instant darling of the crowds with ODI innings of 148 and 183 not out within a year of his debut.

Dhoni improvised abd learned, but he didn't apologise for his batting style, which was not the most elegant. He became a multifaceted ODI batter, one who could accumulate, rebuild, and unleash big sixes, all seemingly at will.

Along the way he showed leadership skills, which were recognised when Rahul Dravid gave up the captaincy in 2007. A day before that announcement from Dravid, a young India side under Dhoni played the first game of the first T20 World Cup in South Africa, and went on to win the tournament. The ODI captaincy was a natural progression, and the Test role duly followed too.

Dhoni brought to the captaincy a thick skin and the relative indifference to results that an Indian captain needs to keep the job for long. Along with India's coach, Gary Kirsten, he put his senior performers in a comfortable place, and they repaid him by producing some of their best years in international cricket. Dhoni's sense of calm on the field mostly worked like a charm in the shorter formats, although he sometimes sat back for too long in Tests tactically. Still, India had some of their best years in Test cricket, in terms of tangible achievement, under him: in the 60 Tests he led in, they had a win-loss ratio of 1.5.

However, after the 50-over World Cup win in 2011, which Dhoni sealed with a timely 91 and a six off his patented helicopter shot, an ageing team lost eight straight Tests on the trot away from home and his captaincy came under immense pressure, which was then exacerbated by India's first home series loss in eight years, 2-1 to England in 2012-13. This brought about a new chapter in Dhoni's career, where he seemed more assertive as a captain, building a new team. He played his best Test innings on a turner to win India the Chennai Test in 2013 against Australia, and became the first captain to lead India to four wins in a Test series.

Away from home in the winter of 2013-14, India lost Test series in South Africa and New Zealand by 1-0 margins that did not reflect how close they came to winning both. The England tour of 2014 began promisingly, with a drawn first Test followed by a historic win at Lord's, but India crashed to earth immediately afterwards to lose the series 3-1. At Old Trafford and The Oval, with the batting crumbling around him, Dhoni played a couple of his bravest innings in Tests.

On the tour of Australia that followed, India competed ferociously, thanks to a young batting core led by Kohli, but it didn't quite show in their results. Dhoni announced after the third Test, in Melbourne, that he was retiring from the format. He ended his career in whites with a proud record for a wicketkeeper: 4876 runs at an average of just over 38, six hundreds, and just under 300 dismissals.

Dhoni continued to lead India in the shorter formats, and they got to the semi-finals of the 2015 World Cup. A year later they won the Asia Cup T20 in Bangladesh but exited the home T20 World Cup in the semi-final, though Dhoni enjoyed a good tournament as a finisher, scoring 89 runs while only being dismissed once in five innings, and showing electric reflexes while keeping to the spinners. He eventually played on till the 2019 World Cup (but gave up the white-ball captaincy in January 2017).

India's defeat to New Zealand in the semi-final of the 2019 World Cup turned out to be Dhoni's final international, although that wasn't officially confirmed till more than a year later, when after Covid brought sport to a halt, he announced it on Instagram just as players' preparations for that year's delayed IPL began.

In that tournament, Dhoni has been the face of the Chennai Super Kings franchise, inspiring fierce cult fandom. When Super Kings were reinstated in 2018 after two seasons out serving a suspension, he was back at the helm, leading the team to a fairy-tale third title, and he almost repeated the feat in 2019, when CSK lost a thrilling final against Mumbai Indians by just one run. Dhoni led them to their third title win in 2021, and repeated the feat in 2023, making CSK the league's most successful franchise, alongside Mumbai.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni, or called fondly, Mahi, was born on 7 July 1981 to Pan Singh and Devaki Devi in Ranchi, Jharkhand. He was the third child after Jayanti Gupta and a brother Narendra Singh Dhoni.

As a child, Dhoni was a massive fan of Adam Gilchrist and idolized Sachin Tendulkar. Dhoni did his schooling at DAV Jawahar Vidya Mandir and played sports like badminton and football .

In fact, football was his favorite sport. It was only when his PE coach saw his football goalkeeping skills and insisted Dhoni try his luck with the cricket gloves.

As luck would have it, he aced in the new sport. Years later, MSD would go on to set a benchmark for wicketkeeping in the cricketing world.

Ms dhoni career.

In 1995, Dhoni joined the Commando cricket club and stood behind the stumps for them for the next three years. He was then picked for the Vinoo Mankad Trophy Under-16 Championship in the 1997/98 season and he performed well.

In 1998, Dhoni started to play for the Central Coal Fields Limited (CCL) team. During his time at the CCL, Deval Sahay would gift him fifty rupees for every 6 that he scored in Sheesh Mahal tournament cricket games. Sahay then pushed for Dhoni’s selection in the Bihar team.

MS Dhoni Domestic Career

MS Dhoni was selected in the Bihar team for the Ranji Trophy in the 1999–2000 domestic season. The 18-year-old scored a half-century in his debut match and 68* in the second innings against Assam. Dhoni ended the season with 283 runs in 5 games. MSD’s maiden first-class century came against Bengal in the 2000/01 season.

With his career stalling, Dhoni made a desperate move to the Railways Ranji team and worked as a Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE) at Kharagpur railway station. Dhoni’s performance in the 2002–03 season for Bihar included three half-centuries in the Ranji Trophy and two half-centuries in the Deodhar Trophy.

Soon, he was recognized as a lower-order contribution as well as for his hard-hitting batting style. In the 2003/04 season, Dhoni managed to score 128* against Assam in the opening match of the Ranji ODI tournament.

Dhoni went on to represent the East Zone in the Deodhar Trophy 2003-04 season. Dhoni scored 244 runs in 4 matches, including a 114 against the Central zone. He was crucial as East Zone lifted the trophy. In the Duleep Trophy finals, MSD was picked over international cricketer Deep Dasgupta and scored a half-century in the second innings.

The  BCCI’s small-town talent-spotting initiative- Talent Resource Development Wing (TRDW) spotted Dhoni in Jamshedpur in 2003. He sent his report to the National Cricket Academy following which he was called up for India A’s tour of Zimbabwe and Kenya.

MSD ODI Career

MS Dhoni came into the Indian team at a time when there was an intense fight for the wicket-keeping spot. He made his debut during the Bangladesh tour in 2004/05. A nervous Dhoni got runout on his debut for a duck. In two matches of the series, he scored 12 and 7*.

Despite a lousy beginning to his international career, Dhoni was given another chance in Pakistan’s tour of India. In the second match, Dhoni scored 148 at Visakhapatnam to prove why he had been selected as India’s wicketkeeper over the likes of Rahul Dravid , Dinesh Karthik, and Parthiv Patel.

In the third match of the Sri Lankan bilateral ODI series in 2005, Dhoni was promoted up the order to boost the scoring, and he duly obliged! Dhoni scored 183 off 145 balls to win the game for India.

Dhoni’s continued to perform well, both with the bat and behind the stumps leading into the ICC Cricket World Cup 2007. However, things turned terrible as India was knocked out of the World Cup after losing to Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. In both the matches Dhoni got out on 0, leading to anger among cricket fans.

Post World Cup, Dhoni came back strongly with a 91* against Bangladesh. As a reward, he was handed the vice-captaincy in the series against South Africa. MSD then scored 6 half-centuries in tours against England, Pakistan, Australia, and Sri Lanka.

Dhoni was named the full-time captain in the 7-match ODI series against Australia. This was the beginning of a new inning for both India and MS Dhoni. With the bat, Dhoni went on either with chipping in vital runs or finishing games for the Indian middle-order.

MSD In World Cups

MS Dhoni has featured in four World Cups, 2 as a captain. Under his captaincy, India lifted the World Cup in 2011 and reached the semifinals in 2015.

2007 icc cricket world cup and dhoni.

Owing to good performances in the middle order as well as behind the stumps, MSD was selected for the World Cup in the Caribbean. India had a disappointing campaign as they lost two of the three group games against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Dhoni had horrible innings as he got out duck in both the games. The team, including Dhoni, was highly criticized for their performances. Around 200 fans attacked Dhoni’s under-construction home in Ranchi after the Bangladesh loss.

2011 ICC Cricket World Cup and Dhoni

By the 2011 WC, Dhoni was the captain of all three Test, T20I, and ODI’s. Dhoni’s major contribution with the bat came in the finals against Sri Lanka. Chasing 275 at the Wankhede, Dhoni promoted himself up the order after Sachin, Sehwag, and Virat Kohli lost their wickets early.

Dhoni and Gambir then build a steady partnership to stabilize the Indian innings. Dhoni scored 91* off 79 deliveries. He scored the winning six of Numan Kulaeskara, a shot which no one will forget, and won the Man of the Match award.

Dhoni’s crucial decision to promote himself up the order to put off Muralitharan’s spin threat and right hand-left hand combo showed why he was one of India’s best captains.

Under Dhoni’s captaincy in the 2015 World Cup held in Australia and New Zealand, the Men in Blue were able to reach the semi-finals with comfort, beating Bangladesh in the quarter-finals. However, they went on to lose to hosts Australia in the semi-finals at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

India had won 7 consecutive matches in the World Cup 2015 and won 11 straight games overall. After beating Bangladesh, MSD became the first non-Australian captain to win 100 ODI matches, and the first Indian captain to hold the record.

He scored 237 runs in 6 matches with an average of 59.25. His 45* and 85* against West Indies and Zimbabwe helped India on the road to the semi-finals. He scored 65 against Australia in the semis but was not able to prevent the Aussies to run over India on their way to glory.

2019 ICC Cricket World Cup and Dhoni

MSD played his last World Cup at the age of 38. This time around, he was India’s wicketkeeper leading into the tournament. Despite his handy knocks against South Africa, Australia, and West Indies, MSD was primarily criticized for his strike rate and ‘lack of intent’.

In the semis against New Zealand, Dhoni scored a fighting half-century and built a promising partnership with Ravinder Jadeja after the top-order fell. It looked like India was on its way to the final. But, Dhoni got run out at a crucial stage, breaking a billion dreams.

Msd test career.

MSD replaced Dinesh Karthik as the wicketkeeper in tests in 2005. On his test debut, Dhoni scored 30 in a match washed away by rain. He scored his first half-century in the second test against Sri Lanka.

During the India tour of Pakistan in early 2006, MS Dhoni scored his first century as he along with Irfan Pathan helped India avoid a follow-on. However, he was unable to perform in the third match as India lost both the test and the series. His prosaic performances continued into the first two matches during the England tour of India.

He came back with a 64 in the final test but could not stop the English from leveling the series. Since then, Dhoni continued to be in the test team until the 2014-15 season when he decided it was time to focus on the shorter format of the game.

Dhoni holds various test records. With the bat, his 244 against Australia in Chennai was the third-highest test score by an Indian captain. He also registered the highest score by an Indian wicket-keeper. Furthermore, it was the most runs scored in an innings by a wicket-keeper–captain. His century against Pakistan was the fastest by an Indian wicket-keeper and fourth overall.

Msd t20 career.

MSD has been a part of the Indian T20 team from the start. He was one of the 11 players to play India’s first-ever T20 international match against South Africa in 2006. Despite his duck, India won the match. However, when they faced the proteas in the 2007 ICC T20 Championships, Dhoni scored 45 as India won the match.

Since then Dhoni went on to lead the Indian team in the inaugural T20 championships and various T20 international victories. Apart from his role as wicketkeeper-captain, he played an important role as a finisher for India in T20’s.

T20 World Cups and Dhoni

Just before the inaugural T20 World Cup 2007, MS Dhoni was named to lead the team. India ended up lifting the trophy. Apart from his role as a captain, MSD played an essential role in the middle order as a finishing batsman. His innings in the semi-finals against Australia helped India to a 15-run victory and a place in the finals.

While he was unable to push India to a satisfying target. MSD’s captainship and cool-headedness in the final over led India to a victory against Pakistan in the final. Dhoni also played an important role in India’s run to the final of the 2014 T20 World Championships. He was declared in the Team of the tournament.

Msd ipl career.

After the 2007 World T20 success, MS Dhoni was recruited in the Indian Premier League by Chennai Super Kings. He was the most expensive player in season one. Under Dhoni’s leadership, the Chennai Super Kings won five titles in the IPL – 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021 and 2023.

In 2015, the franchise was suspended along with Rajasthan Royals from the IPL. Rising Pune Supergiants then purchased him for $1.9 million. He led the side for two seasons before returning to the CSK. Once he returned, Dhoni-led CSK to the IPL title in 2018 and scored 455 runs.

In 2021, Dhoni guided CSK to another title triumph and was retained for ₹12 crore (US$1.5 million) prior to the auction for the 2022 campaign. Ahead of that season, Dhoni relinquished the captaincy, with Ravindra Jadeja assuming the role. However, within a month, Jadeja reverted the captaincy back to Dhoni mid-season. Dhoni then led the team to yet another victory in the subsequent season, solidifying CSK’s status as the most successful IPL franchise with five title victories and ten final appearances under his leadership. He also achieved the milestone of being the first player to participate in 200 T20 matches for CSK and holds the record for the most IPL appearances.

MS Dhoni Centuries

MS Dhoni has scored 16 centuries in international cricket, with 10 in ODIs and 6 in Test cricket. His first century came in 2005 against Pakistan. He scored 148 to help India to a 58 run victory. Dhoni then scored 183* in 145 balls to power India chase Sri Lanka’s 298 in 46 overs at Jaipur.

During India’s tour of Pakistan, MSD scored 148 in the first innings of the 2nd test at Faislabad to help the Men in Blue draw the match. Dhoni’s next century came for Asia XI against Africa XI. In a star-studded match, Mahi scored 139 in 97 balls as Asia won by 13 runs.

His next century came in the Asia Cup 2008 against minnows Hong Kong. He scored an unbeaten 109 as India posted a massive total of 374. Following the Asia Cup, Dhoni continues his good form into Australia’s tour of India in October 2009. Dhoni scored 124 in 107 balls as India posted 354.

He followed it up with another century against Sri Lanka in the 3rd test of the Sri Lanka tour. He scored 100* in the same match when Sehwag scored 293. India won by an innings and 24 runs. Dhoni ended 2009 with 4 centuries. His last century was against Sri Lanka in a losing cause.

Dhoni continued his good form in 2010 as well. In the match against Bangladesh, he scored 101* as India chased down 296 in 47.3 overs. Dhoni scored his next century against South Africa. He was the fourth Indian to score a century in the same innings after Sehwag , VVS Laxman, and Tendulkar.

In the second test against West Indies, MSD scored 144 runs as India posted 631 on the board and won the match an innings and 15 runs. His last century came against Pakistan when he scored 113 in the 1st ODI at Chennai. Incidentally, Dhoni scored his first and last century against Pakistan.

MS Dhoni Double Century

MSD has one double century which came in the first test against Australia at Chennai. He scored 224 runs as India posted 572 on the scoreboard. India won the match by 8 wickets. In the match, Mahi broke three records.

He posted the third-highest score by an Indian captain, the highest Test score by an Indian wicket-keeper, and the highest score by a wicket-keeper-captain.

MS Dhoni is married to Sakshi Singh Rawat. She was born, on 19 November 1988 to RK Singh and Sheila Singh in the Guwahati city of Assam. She went to Welham Girls’ School in Dehradun, Uttrakhand, and completed her schooling education from Jawahar Vidya Mandir in Ranchi, Jharkhand.

Birth And Childhood

Mahendra Singh Dhoni or MS Dhoni was born on 7th July 1981 in Ranchi, Bihar in a Hindu Rajput family. His father Pan Singh worked in junior management positions in MECON and his mother Devaki Devi is a housewife. Dhoni studied at DAV Jawahar Vidya Mandir, Shyamali, Ranchi, where he excelled in sports such as badminton and football and was selected at district and club level competitions.

Accidental Adventure

When he was in his school football team, he was contributing as a goalkeeper. Once his football coach sent him to fill in as the wicketkeeper of the cricket team, he impressed everyone with his wicket-keeping skills. This secured him a permanent spot as the regular wicketkeeper in the Commando cricket club team for three years during the period 1995-98. He continued to do his wicket keeping job well and got the attention of everyone and finally selected for Vinoo Mankad trophy Under 16 championship team during the period 1997-1998.

Early Career

During the period 2001-2003, he worked as a Train Ticket Examiner (TTE) at Karaghpur Railway station, which is under South Eastern Railway in Midnapore district in West Bengal. His colleagues remember him as a very honest, straightforward employee with little mischievous by nature. Once Dhoni and his colleagues covered themselves up with a white blanket and wandered as a ghost in midnight in the railway quarters, which frightened everyone as they thought it was a ghost.

Selection in Bihar Cricket Team

Initially, in 1998, Dhoni was selected by Deval Sahay to play for the Central Coal Fields Limited (CCL) team. Till that time, Dhoni who was in class 12th had played only school and club cricket and no professional cricket. During those days when he was playing for CCL, Deval Sahay used to gift him Rs 50 for each six that he hit in Sheesh Mahal tournament cricket matches. Deval Sahay was the one who tried pushing Dhoni into Bihar cricket team. Dhoni was selected in the Bihar U-19 squad for the 1998–99 season and later was included in the East Zone U-19 squad for the CK Nayudu trophy.

Ranji Trophy And Jharkhand Cricket Team

Dhoni made his debut in Ranji trophy for Bihar in the year 1999-2000. He played for Bihar team for three years continuously for the period 1999/2000, 2000/2001, 2001/2002. Later Dhoni contributed three half-centuries in Ranji trophy and couple of half-centuries in Deodhar Trophy for the season 2002-2003. Later the TRDO officer Prakash Poddar was attracted towards Dhoni’s performance when MSD was playing for Jharkhand team in Jamshedpur in 2003. Poddar later sent a report to National Cricket Academy regarding Dhoni’s performance.

Entry in India A-Team

In the 2003/04 season, Dhoni got selected for India A squad for a tour of Zimbabwe and Kenya because of his continuous efforts. He scored back to back centuries and got the attention of the then India captain – Sourav Ganguly. However, Dinesh Karthik was recommended for the Indian squad as wicketkeeper by Sandeep Patil.

Dhoni after delivering good performances in India A team was selected in ODI squad for the Bangladesh tour in 2004/05. Dhoni was also picked for Pakistan series. His initial matches were not the great success. Dhoni’s turning point match came with the Sri Lankan bilateral ODI series (October-November 2005), wherein the third ODI, Sri Lanka had set the target of 299 among which Dhoni batted an unbeaten score of 183 runs in 145 balls, finally winning the game for India. Due to his consistent performance in the later ODI’s with Pakistan and Bangladesh, Dhoni overtook  Ricky Ponting  and became number one in the ICC ODI Rankings for batsmen on 20 April 2006.

2007 World Cup

It was one of the tough times for Dhoni. In 2007 world cup scenario, India unexpectedly walked out of the world cup series, after losses to Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in the group stage. Dhoni was out for a duck in both these matches and scored just 29 runs in the tournament. Because of this bad performance, Dhoni faced the anger of his fans and his house which was under construction in his hometown Ranchi got destroyed by political activists.

Rise as a Captain

Dhoni, who earlier received a ‘B’ grade contract in 2005, because of his excellent performance was later awarded an ‘A’ grade contract in June 2007. He was also elected as the captain of the Indian squad for the World Twenty20 in September 2007 based on the recommendation of Sachin.

2011 World Cup

Unlike 2007 world cup, India had a good start to 2011 world cup tournament beating Bangladesh, Netherlands, Ireland and West Indies in the group stage under Dhoni’s captainship. Even though they lost to South Africa they tied with England. India beat Australia in quarterfinals and arch-rivals Pakistan in the semi-final. In the final match with Sri Lanka which took place at Mumbai, Dhoni played a knock of 91* to help India win the cup. He was awarded the Man of the Match award.

2015 World Cup

In 2015 world cup, India performed well at the initial matches and marched towards semi-finals with ease. But they lost to Australia in the semi-finals held at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Test Career

Attracted by his good performance against Sri Lanka in ODI, Dhoni replaced Dinesh Karthik for the Indian Test wicket-keeper in 2005. Dhoni made his maiden half-century in the second test and his quick scoring rate (half century came off 51 balls) helped India in setting a target of 436 and the Sri Lankans were bowled out for 247. India’s matches with Pakistan and West Indies made him look like an aggressive player. In 2009 series with Sri Lanka, Dhoni scored two centuries thereby leading India to a 2-0 victory. MSD played his last test series in India’s tour of Australia in the season 2014–15 captaining India in the second and third tests. Following the third Test in Melbourne, Dhoni announced his retirement from the test series.

T-20 World Cup

Dhoni was chosen to lead the Indian team in World T20 in 2007. His first match as captain against Scotland was washed off. Later he led India to the ICC World Twenty20 trophy in South Africa, with a victory over Pakistan in finals which happened on 24 September 2007, and became the second Indian captain to have won a World Cup in any form of cricket, after Kapil Dev.

For Indian Premier League, MSD was contracted by the Chennai Super Kings for 1.5 Million USD, which made him the most expensive player in the IPL during the first season. Under his captaincy, Chennai Super Kings had won two Indian Premier League titles and the 2010 Champions League Twenty20. After the two years suspension of CSK, he was contracted by Rising Pune Supergiant for 1.9 Million USD in and was given the captainship role. However, his team finished in 7th place. In 2018, Dhoni was again selected by Chennai Super Kings after its return.

Personal Life

Dhoni married his childhood friend Sakshi Singh Rawat , who studied with her in the DAV Jawahar Vidya Mandir on 4 th July 2010 in Dehradun. Even though their wedding was rumoured to be a sudden one, took place one day after the couple got engaged but the Bollywood actress  Bipasha Basu , a close friend of Dhoni, informed the media that the wedding was planned for months and was not a spur of the moment decision. The couple is blessed with a baby girl in the year 2015 named her Ziva.

He is now captain of India in all three forms of the game and also led the team to their first ever bilateral ODI series wins in Sri Lanka and New Zealand. The Beginning

Dhoni entered the Bihar Cricket team in the year 1998-99, and was further selected for the India-A Cricket team in the year 2004. Later the same year, he made his debut in the National Cricket team of India.

The Charisma Begins

In his 5th One Day International (ODI) Cricket match against Pakistan, Dhoni scored 148 runs which was the biggest score made by an Indian wicket-keeper till then. He managed to accomplish this score just off 123 balls in the match played at Vishakhapatnam on the 5th of April 2005. Later the same year, he scored 183 not out against Sri Lanka in the Bi-lateral One Day International (ODI) Series, outclassing his own record. This match was played at Jaipur and India had to outsmart a huge 299 runs score set by the Sri Lankans. Dhoni got India this great victory with his wonderful 183 runs within just 145 balls. The Low Down Phase

The Indian Cricket team lost its grip during the year 2006-07, as the team lost in the DLF Cup 2006-07, and again in the 2006 ICC Champions Trophy. Although, Dhoni tried to maintain his record a bit by half century against West Indies. This was a low phase both for the Indian Cricket team and Dhoni, as the wicket-keeper batsman could just score 139 runs in the 4 matches during the One Day International (ODI) Cricket Series against South Africa, and the Indian team lost the Series to South Africa by 0-4.

Again, in the 2007 Cricket World Cup, India badly lost to Bangladesh and Sri Lanka and was ousted from the tournament. In both the matches, Dhoni lost at duck (0 runs), and scored a total of 29 runs in the whole tournament.

But he soon emerged as a winner again after the World Cup nightmare, and scored 91 runs not against Bangladesh in a Series later and 174 runs in 3 matches during the Afro-Asia Cup with an average of 87.00 runs.

He was named the Vice Captain of the Indian One Day International (ODI) Cricket team during a Series against South Africa in Ireland, and the Captain of the team during the Twenty-20 Cricket World Cup played in September 2007. Mahendra Singh Dhoni was born on Jul. 7, 1981, in Ranchi, Bihar. His father, Pan Singh, is now a retired employee of MECON, while his mother, Devaki Devi, is a housewife. He completed his schooling at DAV Jawahar Vidya Mandir, Shayamali, Ranchi.

Accidental introduction to cricket

As a child, Dhoni was always into sports. He was a district-level badminton and football player. His football coach sent him to fill the position of a wicketkeeper on the school cricket team. He played well and soon bagged a permanent place in the group. This ignited his passion for cricket. Dhoni started focussing more on cricket after his 10th grade. He was very passionate about cricket and wanted to prove himself in this sport. 

His father was not very fond of his son’s growing interest in cricket. He was of the view that there is no future in sports. However, Dhoni was clear-sighted about what he wanted for himself. After high school, Dhoni searched for a job to fund his growing cricket career. He got selected for the role of a ticket collector at the Kharagpur Railway Station as the SER (South Eastern Railways) cricket team was in search of a wicketkeeper. Thereon, life became a struggle for MSD. He had to run all day collecting and verifying tickets at the platforms and, in the late evening, had to sweat out at the training nets. Dhoni worked a day in and out to fight for his passion. He worked to make the most of the opportunities that came up his way. Half-heartedly he worked, but his heart was all at the games. He was very consistent and hardworking. His determination played a significant role in defining his successful destiny.

While managing his job, Dhoni continued playing tournaments as well. He struggled to manage the two aspects of his life but never complained. 2007 ICC CRICKET WORLD CUP-

MSD was chosen for the World Cup in the Caribbean due to solid showings both in the middle order and behind the wickets. India’s performance was dismal as they dropped two of their three group games to Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

RETIREMENT OF MS DHONI-

Mahendra Singh Dhoni is one of the most successful former Indian cricket captains.

Under his captaincy, the Indian cricket team won ICC T20 World Cup in 2007, World cup in 2011 and ICC Champions Trophy in 2013.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni is the only captain to win all the ICC trophies.

Introduction-

Mahendra Singh Dhoni was born on1 July, 1981 in Ranchi, Jharkhand.

His father, Pan Singh is a retired employee of Mecon, a public sector company under ministry of steel.

His mother Devaki Devi is a housewife.

This couple is blessed with three children by names Narendra Singh Dhoni, Mahendra Singh Dhoni and a daughter by name Jayanti Gupta.

Narendra Singh Dhoni is serving as a politician while Jayanti Gupta is an English teacher.

Footballer becomes a cricketer-

In his school days, Mahendra Singh Dhoni used to play football and badminton.

He wanted to become a football player in future.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni played football at district level as a goal-keeper.

During his sixth standard in Jawahar Vidhya Mandir School, Banerjee, the sports teacher of Jawahar Vidya Mandir and a cricket coach by name Bhattacharyya were looking  for a good wicket-keeper for cricket.

They both realised the talent of Mahendra Singh Dhoni and selected him into a cricket team.

But he never played cricket in his life, even then in his first cricket match he did a great wicket keeping job and as a result was praised by many.

Into the commando cricket team-

Mahendra Singh Dhoni used to play as a regular wicket keeper for Commando cricket team in between the years 1995-1998.

He was selected in the under 16 category to play for a trophy in 1998.

In that tourney, Mahendra Singh Dhoni played really well.

For him, Adam Gilchrist of Australia is an inspirational figure.

So, after the completion of his tenth standard, Mahendra Singh Dhoni focused solely on cricket and also he used to focus on batting.

After a period of time he used to score many sixes.

Later Mahendra Singh Dhoni got selected to Bihar under-19 cricket team.

He exhibited his good wicket-keeping and batting skills.

Even as Mahendra Singh Dhoni used to bat very well by scoring sixes his talent was not recognised by the selection team as he hailed from a backward region.

In 2000, the selection for the under-19 team was going on and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was declaring the names of the selected players.

Confidence and positive attitude-

Mahendra Singh Dhoni along with his friends and family members were glued to television, hoping that Dhoni’s name would be announced.

After a long suspense, the BCCI announced names of some 15 players; unfortunately, Mahendra Singh Dhoni was not chosen.

Everyone was in a gloomy mood but Mahendra Singh Dhoni started to distribute sweets.

His friends were shocked to see his action, to which Mahendra Singh Dhoni replied that he realised the most important thing that day, that his performance is not adequate to get selected into the team.

So, he declared that from that day he will practice even more and will directly get selected into the Indian team.

This shows Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s self-confidence and positive attitude.

He learnt important lessons from his mistakes and improved himself.

Missing another golden opportunity-

Later, Mahendra Singh Dhoni got selected to the Duleep Trophy.

But here also, he was very unlucky.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni received his selection news at the last minute, by which he was unable to reach on time and missed this golden chance.

By seeing all these failures in his son’s career, his father became depressed.

He pressured Mahendra Singh Dhoni to abandon cricket and settle in any job.

Working as Ticket Collector-

Mahendra Singh Dhoni joined as a Ticket Collector in railways in Kharagpur region.

While working, he used to appear in a sad mood.

So, his station manager enquired the reason behind this and found that Mahendra Singh Dhoni was sad because he was not able to play his favourite game, cricket.

So, the station manager finally allowed Mahendra Singh Dhoni to play cricket in his free time.

Helicopter Shot-

Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s trademark shot is known as Helicopter shot, he learned this shot from a Jharkhand cricketer by the name Santosh Lal.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni started to play very well for railways and fortunately for the second time got selected to Duleep Trophy.

Still unlucky-

But this time, Yuvraj Singh scored a massive 301 runs, by which no one considered Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

After experiencing so many setbacks, he decided to take a bigger risk to test his luck.

So, Mahendra Singh Dhoni resigned from his job.

Luckily, after a few days, thanks to his talent and hard work, he got selected to the East Zone.

Once in Jamshedpur, Mahendra Singh Dhoni was batting excellently and was scoring subsequent sixes.

Luckily, he was noticed by Prakash Prodar, an officer in Talent Resource Development Wing (TRDW).

TRDW was established by BCCI in 2002 and its main function is to identify talented cricketers in far-flung corners of the country.

Thanks to TRDW, many talented cricketers got selected to the national cricket team like Sreesanth, Irfan Pathan, Suresh Raina, Rudra Pratap Singh, Piyush Chawla, etc.

Into the national team-

With the reference of Prakash Poddar, Mahendra Singh Dhoni got selected to the India A team.

After which, he showcased his wicket keeping skills in Zimbabwe tour and in Kenya tour, he showcased his batting skills.

In the Kenya tour, in a match with Pakistan, Mahendra Singh Dhoni showcased his real talent by scoring back to back centuries in subsequent matches.

In this series, he scored 362 runs with an average of 72 runs.

After this successful play, Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly noted Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s talent.

During that time, Indian cricket team was in dire need of a good batting wicket-keeper because Rahul Dravid, Deep Dasgupta, Parthiv Patel,Dinesh Karthik could not fit into the wicket-keeping role well.

Finally, Mahendra Singh Dhoni got a chance in Indian cricket team on December 23, 2004 in the Bangladesh tour.

Not the best impression-

Unfortunately, in his first international debut match he played horribly and got duck-out.

In that series, Mahendra Singh Dhoni scored only a total of 19 runs in 3 matches.

He thought that his career came to a dead end as he miserably failed in his first series.

But to everyone’s surprise Mahendra Singh Dhoni was given a second chance and was selected to the ODI series with Pakistan.

Into the top order-

In this series, the second match was played in Visakhapatnam, India.

Here, Sourav Ganguly, the captain took a very shocking decision of changing the order of Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

He who used to play in the lower order was shifted to the top order in the team.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni utilised this golden opportunity.

He scored 148 runs in just 123 balls, which consisted of 15 fours and 4 sixes.

New records-

On that day a new record was created by Mahendra Singh Dhoni as he became the highest scoring wicket keeper in Indian cricket team.

In 2005, in 3 rd one day against Sri Lanka, he scored a mammoth 183 runs (not out) in the second innings.

On that day, Mahendra Singh Dhoni created the world record of scoring the maximum runs in second innings.

In this series, he won the Man of the series title.

7 long years-

Later, Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s record was broken after a long period of 7 years by Shane Watson of Australia.

In another series played against Pakistan, he topped the ICC ODI rankings by pushing Ricky Ponting to the second place.

After achieving all these feats, an unfortunate incident occurred.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni lost one of his dear friends and disturbed him mentally and also affected his game.

Due to this, he scored only a total of 26 runs in 16 matches.

In the 2007 world cup series, India lost to Sri Lanka and Bangladesh severely and exited in the group stage.

In the two above matches, Mahendra Singh Dhoni was duck-out and he scored a total of just 29 runs in the total World Series matches.

After failing continuously, he was subjected to enormous stress.

Starting afresh-

Mahendra Singh Dhoni relieved the stress of his failures by spending time with his childhood friends in Ranchi and riding motorcycles.

He practiced even more and started to play very well.

As a result, Mahendra Singh Dhoni was promoted to Vice Captain and subsequently to Captain positions.

In the September of 2007, in the T20 world cup his bowling decision in the critical time helped India to become champion.

This incident earned Mahendra Singh Dhoni the name of Captain cool.

He is well-known for encouraging young talent as he readied a young cricket team for the 2011 world cup match.

The team included Sachin Tendulkar .

In the final match, many batsmen did not play well.

Maintaining his coolness-

Sehwag got duck out and Sachin scored just 18 runs.

This disappointed the Indian cricket fans who started to abandon the stadium. 

But at this crucial moment, Mahendra Singh Dhoni helped the team by scoring 91 runs.

He finished the match with his trademark helicopter shot in the last ball.

This made Mahendra Singh Dhoni win the Man of the match award and the hearts of cricket fans.

After a long wait of 28 years, India finally won the world cup-

Mahendra Singh Dhoni credited the team with winning the cup by handing the cup to the team members.

Even today, he is actively contributing to the Indian cricket team.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni got married on 4 th July, 2010 to Sakshi Singh Rawat.

She was his schoolmate.

And this couple is blessed with a daughter by name Ziva Dhoni.
