The 4 Best New Features For Google Classroom

Google Classroom has a number of new features that utilize AI to empower teachers to meet the differing needs of students, says Google’s Akshat Sharma.

Since the pandemic and the more recent AI evolution, Google Classroom has added many new features. Most are aimed at helping educators serve students better while using the popular education tool that turned 10 on August 14.

Akshat Sharma, a group product manager for Google Classroom, shares his favorite new features and discusses how teachers and/or students can best utilize these.

When it comes to AI features, these are vetted by educators who participate in the Google for Education pilot program to test new technologies, including AI applications.

1. Interactive Questions on YouTube

YouTube is incredibly popular with teachers and students, which is why Sharma and the Google Classroom team are excited about the new ability built into Google Classrooms to quickly and easily allow educators to embed questions within YouTube.

“You can add questions at any time stamp,” Sharma says. These questions can be multiple choice, true or false, or short answer, and can provide instant feedback to students and give teachers data on how these were answered.

Popular AI videos also have AI-generated questions added automatically, giving teachers a jumping-off point. “The student will receive real-time feedback and can go back and rewatch segments if they need to to help them arrive at the right answer,” Sharma says.

2. Read Along

Read Along is an AI tutoring product aimed at helping students increase their reading abilities. “About 65 percent of students globally can’t read at their grade level,” Sharma says. “We are really thinking about how AI can play a major role in supporting students in their journey of reading.”

Read Along allows students to read various stories aloud. The tool will highlight the word they’re reading and offer computer-generated voice feedback as they go. The tool also encourages student success and gently points out and corrects words they might miss.

“The core idea here is we’re making it very easy for educators to support every child’s individual reading education through this AI-enabled tutor,” Sharma says. “You get real-time feedback as a student as you’re reading out loud, plus on the teacher side, you get automated insights.”

3. Google Classroom Groups

Teachers are constantly telling the Google team that they want more opportunities to differentiate learning for students, Sharma says. The new groups feature in Google Classroom grew from that.

“The idea here is that educators can define groups of students inside Classroom,” Sharma says. “When they’re assigning any of the content they can choose to assign to any of the groups instead of the entire class. That provides flexibility in how teachers might want to differentiate content. For example, if you have a set of students who are English language learners, you might want to provide some specific resources for an assignment. Or you might have a set of students who are still emerging readers and you want to create a Read Along version of that assignment.”

The new feature makes it much easier for students to run a classroom and assign materials where one size definitely does not fit all.

4. Gemini in Classroom

Gemini, Google’s most prominent generative AI technology , is now built into the teacher experience in Google Classroom. The tool within Classroom has been specifically tailored to teacher needs and can help educators kickstart their lesson ideas and brainstorm activities, making differentiating for students easier, Sharma says.

The tool also has careful safeguards in place. It does not help with grading, for instance, and is not available to students.

“AI is another tool in the tool kit but what we’re really trying to do here is make sure we can solve the educator and student’s needs,” Sharma says. “Teachers have always wanted to differentiate more in the class to meet the needs of varied learners, but it has been very hard for a variety of reasons. One of the reasons has been that curating content, creating content for specific needs has been hard, but with AI we think that becomes more possible.”

How can I archive an entire Google Classroom for the whole year?

I want to keep a complete archive of the whole school year (assignments, grades, content, everything I possibly can). I don't see any complete step-by-step instructions on-line, but I've read that it's possible.

Google Classrooms are meant to be used one time, not reused year after year. At the end of the semester or the end of the year, archive your Classrooms and create new ones for the new semester or new year. Archiving removes them from your dashboard so you can't see them. Archived Classrooms are still available for you to refer to. You can also reuse posts from archived Classrooms. Archived Classrooms are available under the Classroom Main Menu.

How to archive a Google Classroom as a student

Google Classroom is one of many platforms for students to manage their classwork, assignments, and group projects online. As a student, you may want to focus on your current courses in your dashboard while keeping a record of your completed classes or courses for future reference. Archiving a Google Classroom does just that: it removes the course from your active classes page and stores all those course materials elsewhere for you to access.

The ability to archive a class depends on whether or not the teacher has granted relevant permissions, so sometimes, as a student, your only option is to unenroll from the Google Classroom if you want to remove it from your homepage. If you do have the option, we’ll show you how to archive a course, what happens when you archive a class, and how to restore or delete archived courses.

QUICK ANSWER

To archive a Google Classroom, click the three-dot icon on the class and select Archive.  You can find your Archived Classes from the main menu, where you can restore or delete them.

If you don't see the option to archive the course, contact your teacher or Unenroll from the course instead.

How to archive a Google Classroom

What happens when you archive a google classroom, how to restore or delete archived classes in google classroom.

Log in to your Google Classroom account. Select the Classroom you want to archive and click on the three-dot icon in the upper right corner of the Classroom.

Select Archive from the dropdown menu and confirm that you want to archive the Classroom by clicking Archive.

When you archive a class, it will be moved to the Archived classes section of your Classroom home page. Archiving a class does not delete it but removes it from your active classes list, and it won’t appear on your current class list. Similar to archiving emails , it moves them to a different folder.

You can find your Archived classes from the main menu of your Classroom homepage.

All students in archived classes will still be able to view and access the class materials and assignments, but they won’t be able to post new comments or submissions.

Additionally, all archived classes are removed from your Google calendar, and the class code will be disabled, meaning no new students can be added to the class.

If you want to delete a class entirely, you must archive it first. Note that only the primary teacher can delete a course; students or co-teachers cannot delete courses.

Alternatively, you can restore archived classes to see the class card again with your current courses. That way, you can use its posts, assignments, comments, and materials again.

To delete or restore an archived class, navigate to the Archived classes page from the main menu and select the three-dot icon on the course. You’ll then see options to Restore or Delete the class.

There is no way to recover a class after deleting it, so be sure you want to go through with it. Additionally, the class files will remain in Google Drive. If you no longer need the files, you can manually delete them from your Google Drive .

If you can’t archive a class, it might be because you are not the owner of the course or do not have the necessary permissions. Contact the owner of the course or your teacher for assistance.

Archiving a classroom is a personal preference, but it’s a good way to keep all your class materials organized and easily accessible. It also helps to declutter your active classes list and makes it easier to focus on your current classes.

To archive a class in the Google Classroom app, select the class and tap the three dots menu icon in the top right corner. Select Archive from the dropdown menu.

Do students still need to submit work in Google Classroom? If not, ARCHIVE the class! You can reuse assignments from archived classes so do not delete the class, archive it!

Go to the 3 dots menu on the Classes page (home page) of Google Classroom and choose “Archive.” This will remove the tile from your Classes page and prevent students from submitting work or comments.

Consider, before archiving the Google Classroom class that you edit the class. Use the 3 dots to choose “Edit.”

When you go back to reuse assignments, how might you name the class so that it is easy for you to identify the class? Consider adding an emoji or “archived” or the school year or something to the class title to make it faster to identify in the future.

For the “Section” line when describing a class I always recommend you include the school year so you know how old it is. I do this when I set up the class in the first place.

Remove Students

If you are ready to archive your Google Classroom class, you may want to remove the students from the class. Be warned you lose all comments and data on those students so make sure you do not need to go back to student information on that class at all before you remove the students.

To remove students go to the People tab on Classroom BEFORE you archive. If you have already archived, you will need to use the 3 lines menu to choose “Archived classes.” Use the 3 dots on the archived class to restore the class. Then go to the People tab, select all students, and use the drop down to “Remove.” Archive the class again.

Hi Alice, I wonder if I could ask a quick question? My students still have their classrooms from last year. If you archive your classrooms, do they disappear from the student’s view so they are fresh for next year or do you need to remove students before you archive? Or is there something students can do to clear up their space? Thank you ?

I'm looking into building a piece of software requires us to be able to view a student's assignments / grades and submit assignments on their behalf. I've been looking through the docs and everything is teacher focused.

"Application developers can use the Classroom API to integrate their apps with Classroom. These apps need to use OAuth 2.0 to request permission to view classes and rosters from teachers."

I'm not seeing anything that talks about OAuth from the student. Is it possible to read grades / assignments and post assignments with just auth from the student? I understand post might be more difficult as I will not have created the assignment, posting is less important but would be nice.

I've gone over the docs a few times. But I'm hoping I just missed something obvious.

• If you consider "taking OAuth from a student" (taking over his credentials), I think this would be hacking (or "a hack"); OAuth is personal, and "taking over" (in whatever way) sounds contrary to the design intend of OAuth. Instead, a software can grant someone (with a teacher's credentials) permission to access and change data that is owned by someone else (with a student's credentials). So the solution does not need to worry about bypassing (or manipulating) authentication; the better option is to implement permissions and permission management according to the required feature. –  Christian Fuchs Commented Aug 28 at 21:42

Step-1 Open App : The first step is to open the app

• The first step in the process is to open the Google Classroom app.
• To do so find the Google Classroom app icon on your phone and click on it to open the app.
• If you do not have the app installed you can install it from Google Playstore.
• Once you have installed the app, click on it to open the app.

When you archive a class, it becomes inactive, and you can no longer make any changes or add students to it. However, you can still access the class, view its content, and unarchive it whenever you need it.

Reasons to Archive Your Google Classroom

There are several reasons why archiving your Google Classroom is a good idea:

How to Archive Assignments in Google Classroom in 4 Easy Steps

Unfortunately, Google Classroom does not yet have the feature to archive these older assignments for Windows , Mac , Android and iPhone . However, you can do a simple thing to hide these assignments in an organized way so that you can refer back to them when needed. Don’t delete assignments as they are very hard to recover. Let’s look at how you can archive your older assignments.

How to Archive Assignments in Google Classroom

Step 1: create a new ‘archive’ class.

Open Google Classroom on your chosen device or through the web-based version. On the main page of your Classroom, click on the + sign to the left side of the screen and choose ‘Add New Class’.

Set up a new class titled ‘Archive’ and then click on ‘Create’. This will give you a space that you can use to archive all older assignments.

Step 2: Go Into Your Archive Class

Now that the archive class has been created, enter the class by clicking on it from the main screen of your Google Classroom. Click on the ‘Classwork’ tab located at the top of your screen.

Step 3: Create Topics for Your Archive

Click on the + sign to create topics. In the drop-down list that appears, click on ‘Topic’ and add a name for that topic. Make it easy to identify by using an identifier such as subject name, ex. Math.

Step 4: Reuse Posts

Next, click on the + sign once more, but this time choose ‘Reuse Post’. This will open a window showing all your classes. From here, you can go into the correct class and then select the assignment you want to reuse, or in this case, archive. Once you click on reuse, the assignment will open, and you will see all of the data attached. Save this as a ‘Draft’, and you will have this copy in your archive.

Organize Yourself Simply

Using this way to archive older assignments will leave you with a much more organized classroom, and you’ll still have access to those assignments when you need to refer back to them.

Google Classroom Cleanup: Archiving and Deleting Classes and Users

2020 has been a remarkable year for education. Moving from in-person instruction to remote learning is a huge change. You’ve taken amazing steps to ensure your students and teachers have uninterrupted learning. Congratulations on a job well done. 

As the calendar year and semester are about to change, it’s time to look forward to next semester. your teachers will want to begin the semester without old classes cluttering google classroom. to cleanup classroom, you’ll archive their old classes and delete provisioned classes, if you have any. you’ll also delete user accounts of teachers who have left. here’s a reminder, once a class ends, you can archive it. deleting a class is a little different. you can’t revive deleted classes. you should only delete declined and provisioned classes. , archiving and deleting classes one-by-one isn’t the best way to go about it. we’ve outlined the most efficient way for you to archive and delete classes. you’ll do this in a bulk action., let’s get started making sure google classroom is clean and organized. first, let’s review the differences between an archived and deleted class., what happens to an archived class, archiving a class removes it from teachers’ and students’ classroom homepage. the class moves to a separate area to preserve class materials, student work, and posts.  , teachers and students can still view an archived class. to use the class again, the teacher can restore it., teachers and students can access class materials for an archived class within the  google drive folder., students can’t unenroll from an archived class., google calendar retains the class calendar for teachers and students. users can remove the calendar from view or permanently delete it., an archived class stays in google classroom unless the primary teacher deletes it. , what happens to a deleted class, deleting a class removes it from google classroom. you can’t restore a deleted class., teachers and students can no longer access class posts or comments. assignment grades are lost., timing your google classroom cleanup, because of what happens to classes, the timing of your archive is important. you don’t want to archive or delete classes that are still in session. the best time to archive classes is after teachers have finished submitting grades for the semester., archiving classes in google classroom, in google classroom, teachers can individually archive their classes from the classes page.  they can restore these classes at any time and re-use class content in future classes., archiving classes using little sis, in little sis’ classroom explorer, you can perform a bulk archive across your domain, or for selected teachers. you’ll find this in the bulk actions drop-down at the top of the page. this opens the bulk classroom cleanup wizard. the wizard helps you identify active classes by date, school, or teacher. once you run the wizard, selected classes move from the homepage in google classroom. the classes move to the archived classes section. you can opt to send the primary teacher an email when you run this action. it is your way to let them know they have an archived class., teachers can restore these classes and re-use class content in their new classes., archiving classes using gam, if you’re a google apps manager (gam) user, you can download a list of all your classes using the print courses command . then filter down to the list of classes you want to bulk archive. if you want to skip the filtering and return only active classes, use the print courses state active command. next, you’ll use gam to ingest this list. finally, you’ll run the update course action to change the status of these classes to archived. you can do this by course id or alias. you’ll want to reference the bulkoperations gam wiki page for instructions on running this as a bulk task via csv or text file., deleting provisioned classes, there is no way to undo deleting a class. be cautious when using this function. , as you create classes, with a synching solution or gam, you may end up with provisioned classes on your domain. these classes are not active. teachers never accepted them and there is no work assigned. also, students can’t see provisioned classes on their homepage in classroom. since the semester has ended, provisioned classes are no longer needed. you don’t want to confuse teachers next year by showing them old classes in google classroom the best course of action is to delete these classes., deleting provisioned classes using little sis, in little sis’ classroom explorer, you’ll run bulk delete classes. you’ll find this in the bulk actions drop-down at the top of the page. this opens the bulk classroom cleanup wizard. the wizard helps you identify active classes by date, school, or teacher. once you run the wizard, selected classes no longer appear on the teachers’ classroom home page., deleting provisioned classes using gam, if you’re a google apps manager (gam) user, you can download a list of all your classes using the print courses command . then filter down to the list of classes you want to bulk delete . if you want to skip the filtering and return only provisioned classes, use the print courses state active command. next, you’ll use gam to ingest this list. finally, you’ll run the delete course action to remove the provisioned classes from the domain by class id or alias. , transferring ownership before deleting users, as a part of your classroom cleanup, you may want to remove user accounts. if a teacher has left and you don’t want to keep their account, you can delete it. there are some steps to take before you delete a user so you don’t end up with orphaned classes. an orphaned class is one where a deleted user owns the class. once you have an orphaned class, it is difficult (if not impossible) to remedy the situation., let’s look at a problematic scenario. if you delete a teacher account and there are students in the class they can still interact with each other. if the class lets students post to the stream, they can continue to post after deleting the teacher. without a teacher, there is no one to supervise the interaction., there are some simple steps you can take to avoid orphaning a class. first, transfer ownership of the class before you delete the teacher account. you can transfer these classes to a service account or another user in the domain. this could be the teacher taking over for the one who has left the district. regardless, keep in mind that transferring ownership acts as an invitation. only once the new teacher accepts the invitation should you delete the primary owner’s account.  , another option is to suspend rather than delete teacher accounts. with a suspended account, you can still transfer the classes they own to another user. once transferred, the class retains the primary owner as a co-teacher in the classroom. the new owner can later remove them., transferring classes using little sis, in the little sis classroom explorer, you can filter by the primary teacher.  this is how you identify all active classes for the teacher account. once you’ve located the classes, select them and use the bulk actions wizard to change the primary teacher. with little sis, you can opt to send messages to the former and new owner of the class. this is your way of alerting the former primary teacher of a transferred class. the new owner’s message prompts them to log in to google classroom and accept ownership. when active class ownership changes, the new owner becomes a co-teacher. they are co-teacher until the new owner accepts the invitation to take ownership of the class., transferring classes using gam, if you’re a gam user, you can change ownership of classes using the update course command.  the same stipulations apply. the class must be active and currently owned by a non-deleted user on the domain., about little sis and gam, if you’re a newbie to gam, feel free to take a stab at using it on your domain. the getting started guide in github is a great resource for new users. this is also where all the referenced commands in this article are located. gam can do much more than classroom management. it’s a great tool to have if you do bulk operations in g suite. you must be a super admin to use gam. you must also have to enable google cloud platform to use the api commands., little sis for classroom is a paid tool from amplified it, but you can use it free for 30 days with a quote. you’ll have to be a super admin to get up and running with the tool. as a super admin, you can delegate the bulk actions to other users
