II. Designing Presentation Folders

Elements of a great design.

When it comes to designing a presentation folder that will make a lasting impression on your audience, there are several key elements to consider. Here are some of the most important elements of a great presentation folder design:

presentation folder design

Branding : Your presentation folder should be an extension of your brand and convey your message and values. Incorporate your company logo, color scheme, and other visual elements that reflect your brand.

Clear and concise messaging : Your messaging should be clear and easy to understand. Avoid using jargon or technical terms that your audience may not be familiar with.

High-quality images : Use high-quality images that are relevant to your message and complement your design. Avoid using stock images that are overused or generic.

Typography : Choose fonts that are easy to read and complement your branding. Avoid using too many fonts, as this can make your design appear cluttered and confusing.

Consistency : Consistency is key to a successful presentation folder design. Ensure that your design is consistent throughout the entire folder, including the cover, pockets, and inside pages.

White space : Use white space effectively to give your design room to breathe. This will make your presentation folder appear more organized and professional.

Durability : Choose high-quality materials that are durable and can withstand wear and tear. This will ensure that your presentation folder can be used multiple times and will continue to make a good impression.

By incorporating these key elements into your presentation folder design, you can create a visually appealing and effective marketing tool that will help you stand out from the competition.

How to choose the right template or style

When it comes to designing a presentation folder, choosing the right template or style is crucial to creating a professional and effective marketing tool. Here are some tips to help you choose the right template or style for your presentation folder:

Consider your brand identity : Your presentation folder should reflect your brand identity, including your company's logo, color scheme, and overall style. Choose a template or style that complements your brand's look and feel.

Think about your audience : Consider who your target audience is and what message you want to convey. For example, if you're targeting a more corporate audience, a classic and professional design may be more appropriate, while a more creative and visually engaging design may work better for a younger or more artistic audience.

Choose the right size : Presentation folders come in various sizes, so it's important to choose the right size for your needs. Think about what materials you want to include in the folder and choose a size that can accommodate them comfortably.

Look at design elements : Pay attention to the design elements of the template or style you're considering, including the placement of text, images, and graphics. Make sure the design elements are well-balanced and easy to read.

Don't be afraid to customize : Many presentation folder templates and styles can be customized to better fit your brand and messaging. Don't be afraid to make changes to the template to make it more personalized and unique.

By considering these factors, you can choose a template or style that is not only visually appealing but also effectively conveys your brand and message to your audience.

Design tips for branding, marketing, and more

Designing a presentation folder can be a challenging task, but it's also an opportunity to showcase your brand and make a lasting impression on your audience. Here are some design tips to help you create a folder that effectively promotes your brand and marketing message:

Start with a clear goal : Before you begin designing your folder, make sure you have a clear understanding of what you want to achieve. What message do you want to convey to your audience, and what action do you want them to take after seeing your folder? Once you have a clear goal in mind, you can design your folder with a specific purpose in mind.

Keep it simple : A cluttered design can overwhelm your audience and detract from your message. Keep your design simple and focused, with a clear hierarchy of information. Use a limited color palette and typography that is easy to read.

Use high-quality images : Images can be a powerful tool for communicating your brand and message. Use high-quality images that are relevant to your brand and message, and make sure they are optimized for print.

Incorporate your branding : Your presentation folder should be an extension of your brand, so make sure to incorporate your branding elements, such as your logo, colors, and typography. Use your branding consistent throughout your folder design, so your audience can easily recognize and remember your brand.

Consider the paper and finish : The type of paper and finish you choose can also impact the effectiveness of your presentation folder. Consider the weight and texture of the paper, as well as the finish, such as gloss or matte. The right combination can help your folder stand out and communicate a professional image.

Highlight your unique selling points : What sets your brand apart from the competition? Make sure to highlight your unique selling points in your folder design, whether it's through copy, images, or graphics. This will help your audience understand why they should choose your brand over others.

Test and refine : Finally, don't be afraid to test and refine your folder design. Show it to colleagues or customers for feedback, and make adjustments as necessary to ensure it effectively communicates your message and achieves your goals.

By following these design tips, you can create a presentation folder that effectively promotes your brand and marketing message and helps you stand out from the competition.

III. Paper Options

Types of paper stock for presentation folders.

When it comes to designing and printing presentation folders, choosing the right paper stock is crucial for achieving the desired look and feel. Here are some of the most common types of the paper stock used for presentation folders:

Glossy Paper Stock : Glossy paper stock has a shiny finish that can make colors appear brighter and more vibrant. This type of paper stock is ideal for designs with high-contrast images and bold colors.

Matte Paper Stock : Matte paper stock has a non-reflective finish that can give your presentation folder a more sophisticated and subtle look. This type of paper stock is best suited for designs that require a softer and more understated feel.

Uncoated Paper Stock : Uncoated paper stock has a natural, textured finish that can add a tactile element to your presentation folder. This type of paper stock is great for designs that want to convey a sense of authenticity or a handmade feel.

Linen Paper Stock : Linen paper stock has a distinct woven texture that can give your presentation folder a high-end look and feel. This type of paper stock is often used for formal or elegant designs.

Recycled Paper Stock : Recycled paper stock is made from post-consumer waste and can be a great choice for companies looking to demonstrate their commitment to sustainability. This type of paper stock can also have a unique look and feel, depending on the specific materials used.

When selecting a paper stock for your presentation folder, it's important to consider factors such as budget, brand image, and the intended audience. By choosing the right paper stock, you can create a presentation folder that effectively conveys your message and enhances your brand.

How to choose the right paper for your needs

Choosing the right paper for your presentation folders is an important decision that can impact the overall quality and effectiveness of your marketing materials. Here are some key factors to consider when selecting paper for your presentation folders:

Weight and Thickness : The weight and thickness of the paper you choose can affect the durability and stiffness of your folder. Heavier paper stocks, such as 14pt or 16pt cardstock, are more durable and provide a sturdy feel. Thinner paper stocks, such as 80lb or 100lb text paper, are more flexible and lightweight, making them easier to handle and fold.

Finish : The finish of the paper can affect the look and feel of your presentation folder. Glossy finishes provide a shiny and reflective surface, while matte finishes offer a more subdued and elegant look. Textured finishes, such as linen or felt, can add a tactile element to your folder.

Color : The color of the paper can impact the overall look and feel of your folder. White or off-white paper is a common choice for presentation folders, as it provides a neutral background that can showcase your design and branding elements. Colored paper can be used to create a more unique and eye-catching folder, but keep in mind that it may affect the legibility of text.

Environmental Considerations: If sustainability is important to your brand or organization, consider choosing paper made from recycled content or from responsibly sourced materials.

Overall, the right paper choice for your presentation folder will depend on your specific needs and preferences. It's important to take the time to explore different options and samples before making a final decision. A reputable printer can provide guidance and recommendations based on your requirements and budget.

Specialty paper options and finishes

Specialty paper options and finishes can enhance the look and feel of your presentation folder, making it more visually appealing and professional. Here are some of the most popular specialty paper options and finishes to consider:

Textured Paper - Textured paper can give your presentation folder a unique and tactile feel. There are many different textures to choose from, including linen, felt, and laid.

Glossy Paper - Glossy paper has a shiny finish that can make colors pop and give your folder a polished look. It is a popular option for photo-heavy designs.

Matte Paper - Matte paper has a non-glossy finish that can give your folder a more understated and elegant look. It is often used for designs with a lot of text.

Foil Stamping - Foil stamping is a process that uses heat and pressure to apply metallic foil to paper. It can add a luxurious and eye-catching element to your folder.

Embossing and Debossing - Embossing and debossing involve creating a raised or recessed design on paper by pressing it with a metal die. These techniques can add depth and texture to your folder.

Spot UV Coating - Spot UV coating is a technique that involves applying a shiny, clear coating to specific areas of your folder, such as your logo or other design elements. It can add contrast and dimension to your design.

When choosing specialty paper options and finishes, it's important to consider your brand image and the message you want to convey. A folder with a shiny, metallic finish might be appropriate for a luxury brand, while a folder with a more understated, textured paper might be a better fit for a professional services firm. Experiment with different options to find the combination that best suits your needs.

IV. Printing Options

Types of printing options for presentation folders.

When it comes to printing presentation folders, there are several options to choose from. Each option has its unique advantages and disadvantages, depending on the type of design you're looking for, the budget, and the printing volume. Here are some of the most popular types of printing options for presentation folders:

Digital Printing : Digital printing is a cost-effective option that uses digital files to print directly onto paper. It's ideal for small to medium print runs, as it's a quick and easy way to produce high-quality prints. However, it may not be suitable for large volumes or printing on certain materials.

Offset Printing : Offset printing is a popular option for larger print runs, as it's more cost-effective than digital printing for higher quantities. It involves creating a plate with the design, which is then transferred onto the paper. Offset printing produces high-quality prints with crisp and clean lines and vibrant colors.

Letterpress Printing : Letterpress printing is a traditional printing method that involves pressing ink into the paper using a metal plate. It creates a beautiful, tactile finish and is ideal for designs that require a unique and luxurious look and feel.

Foil Stamping: Foil stamping is a popular printing technique for adding metallic or colored foil to the surface of the paper. It creates a striking and high-end finish and is often used to highlight logos, text, or other important details.

Embossing and Debossing : Embossing and debossing involve creating a raised or recessed design on the paper by pressing it with a metal die. Embossing creates a raised design, while debossing creates a recessed design. Both techniques add texture and depth to the design and can create an elegant and sophisticated look.

When selecting a printing option for your presentation folders, consider the design, budget, and printing volume. Each option has its unique advantages and can help you achieve the desired look and feel for your folders.

How to choose the right printing method for your needs

When it comes to printing presentation folders, there are several methods to choose from, each with its own advantages and limitations. Here are some factors to consider when choosing the right printing method for your needs:

Quantity : If you need a large number of presentation folders, offset printing may be the best choice, as it is the most cost-effective option for high-volume runs. On the other hand, if you only need a small number of folders, digital printing may be a more affordable option.

Color : If your design requires full-color printing or complex graphics, digital printing may be the best choice. This method can produce high-quality, detailed images with accurate color reproduction. However, if you require a specific Pantone color or metallic ink, offset printing may be a better choice.

Paper stock : Different printing methods work better with certain paper stocks. For example, if you want to use textured or heavy paper, offset printing may be the best option. Digital printing can work well with glossy or matte-coated paper stocks.

Turnaround time : If you need your presentation folders printed quickly, digital printing may be the best choice. This method allows for shorter turnaround times and can often be done on the same day. Offset printing typically takes longer due to the setup required.

Budget : Your budget will also play a role in determining the printing method you choose. Offset printing is typically more expensive upfront due to the setup required, but can be more cost-effective for high-volume runs. Digital printing may be more affordable for smaller runs or for those on a tight budget.

By considering these factors, you can determine the best printing method for your specific needs and ensure that your presentation folders are printed to your satisfaction.

Specialty printing options and finishes

When it comes to printing presentation folders, there are a variety of specialty printing options and finishes that can help your folder stand out from the crowd. These printing techniques can add visual interest, texture, and depth to your design, and can help communicate the quality and professionalism of your brand. Here are some of the most popular specialty printing options and finishes to consider:

Foil Stamping: Foil stamping involves applying a metallic or colored foil to a specific area of the folder, such as the logo or text. This technique can create a shiny or reflective effect that catches the eye and adds an element of luxury to the folder.

Embossing: Embossing involves creating a raised impression on the folder by pressing a design into the paper from underneath. This can add texture and dimension to the folder and can be used to highlight specific elements of the design, such as a company logo or name.

Spot UV: Spot UV involves applying a glossy, clear coating to specific areas of the folder, such as the logo or text. This creates a contrast between the matte paper and the shiny coating, which can add visual interest and emphasis to the design.

Die Cutting : Die cutting involves cutting the paper into a specific shape or design using a die, which is a metal template. This technique can create unique and intricate shapes that stand out from traditional rectangular folders.

Soft Touch Coating : Soft touch coating involves applying a velvety, matte coating to the paper that feels soft and luxurious to the touch. This can add a tactile element to the design and make the folder more memorable and enjoyable to handle.

By incorporating these specialty printing options and finishes into your presentation folder design, you can create a unique and memorable marketing tool that communicates the quality and professionalism of your brand.

What size is a standard presentation folder?

The folded size of a standard presentation folder is 9 x 12 inches, or 12 x 18 inches opened flat. It is designed to hold standard 8.5 x 11 inch sheets of printed material in the folder pockets.

Can I print non-standard presentation folder sizes?

Just about any custom size folder can be made. 6″ x 9″ and 4″ x 9″ folders are common mini-folder sizes, and legal size 9 x 14.5 inch folders are commonly produced and used in some industries, such as legal and financial, to hold standard 8.5 x 14 legal size paper.

Can I have a folder made from custom or specialty papers?

Yes, they can be made from most cover stocks including dull or matte stocks, either white or colored uncoated or textured stocks with linen, laid, felt or other special finishes, and various grades of recycled papers.

Can I have a pocket on only one side?

Yes, you can have one pocket on either the left or right side if you don’t want the standard two pocket format.

Can I print on the inside of my presentation folder?

Yes, you can print any combination of colors, including black, PMS inks or full color on the inside of the folder. The outside of the pockets are printed with the front and folded in, so two sided printing is not required for that.

What custom options are available for presentation folders?

Some of the many available custom printing and finishing options are die cutting, embossing, foil stamping, flood or spot UV coating, matte coating, PMS inks, Soft Touch ®  coating, increased capacity folders with spines, additional panels, custom pocket sizes and shapes, and more.

What type of slits can I get on presentation folder pockets?

Either or both pockets can have slits to hold a vertical or horizontal business card, a CD, mini-CD or DVD, or a brochure or other printed piece.

Can you insert items into my presentation folder for me?

Yes. We can print and insert a complete presentation kit and ship them completed to you or destinations such as trade shows or conventions, or mail them to specific individuals in a mailing envelope. Common inserts include sell sheets, flyers, brochures, catalogs and cover letters. Shrink wrapping is also available for extra protection during shipping and handling.

Can I have inserts stapled or glued into my folder?

Yes, a large brochure or catalog can be stapled into the spine for a classy and permanent product catalog or sales presentation with additional materials in the pockets. Printed pieces, including notepads, can be glued into the inside of the folder.

Are presentation folder templates available?

We have templates for standard size folders with common options for both PC and Mac platforms. Check with us for non-standard sizes and options.

How should I create the layout in my graphics program.

We have detailed design and layout instructions for a number of common graphic design programs. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions or need specific help.

Can you help me design a presentation folder for my business?

Sure, we have expert designers that will work one-on-one with you at a reasonable rate to get you the best possible folder for your business needs.

  • LAYOUT Make sure your custom images and graphics appear just where you want them – use Printing for Less folder layout guides to cover your bases for any pre-press program you use
  • SIZE MATTERS Standard folders come in 9″ x 12″, but think ahead about what you want inside – some presentation materials might require a custom size
  • ADAPTABILITY While presentation material inside may change, your folders don’t have to – keep your designs generic enough to adapt, and save money on future printing costs

4 Ways to Make Your Company Shine

Creating marketing materials can be a challenging task for any business. From business cards to letterhead, postcards, brochures and catalogs, the amount of different products businesses use to promote and sell their products and services can be overwhelming.

One product that many businesses use but may not take full advantage of is the presentation folder. A well-designed presentation folder says a lot about your company, its style, level of professionalism and can set the tone of a meeting or new product launch. A poorly designed folder, with dark or muddy images on subpar paper doesn’t portray the level of service you and your company is capable of.

A well designed presentation folder introduces your company to a prospective customer properly, and is a key tool that you can use to leave a lasting impression with that customer. Presentation folders are a great vehicle for your brochures and product sheets, and if the “outer wrapping” doesn’t inspire much confidence or interest, why would your customers want to open it?

Let’s look at four key points to keep in mind when you are designing your presentation folder or pocket folder to get the most “wow factor” possible, and give your competition a run for their money.

1. Choose your target and overall style first . Once you know who you are going after (new customers, prospects, existing customers, etc.) then focus on the look and feel of the folder. Depending upon your company and the end use of the folder, you may want a look that is casual, professional or very minimal, with few colors or details. Do not try to be all things with this one piece of your marketing collateral.

2. Use fonts, colors and information wisely, if not sparingly . More than two or three font styles can be distracting from the point you are trying to drive home. The same goes for color-often just a few key colors (or even black and white) create a powerful visual design for your presentation folder. Keep the information simple and straightforward, putting the most emphasis on your most key points: new products, services, sales, store opening, etc. Don’t clutter up the folder with tons of information; use what is inside the folder to inform and educate them with your sell sheets and brochures.

3. Paper is an important consideration. Glossy, matte or uncoated stocks give the recipient a different feel, and the look of your logo or message can many times be enhanced by the correct paper choice. Conversely, the “wrong” paper can dull images or take away from that snappy logo you have, so do your homework. Talk with your printer, request samples and see what matches up best with the look you are going for.

4. Proofread everything!  A well designed presentation folder, on the right paper, with the right message and eye-catching photos will fall short of doing its job if there is a glaring typo in it. A small error or misspelling, while seemingly small, can have a big end effect, one that will erode your prospect’s confidence in you and your company. Why would they spend their money with you when you can’t even spell? Seems harsh, but it is true. Have several people look it over before you send it off to the printer, then look at it again.

In the end, the key is to think of your presentation folder as a billboard for you and your company. It can start the conversation with your customer, and is something that will stay with them, continuing to build your brand after you leave. Don’t take the design lightly-look for ways to make your presentation folder stand out and deliver your message and you will be that much closer to another sale or customer.

Presentation Folder Marketing

With branded presentation folders, you can really say a lot before you say anything at all. Custom printed presentation folders have many marketing uses, including new product launches, business proposals, welcome packages, orientation kits, trade show materials, customer service agreements, and much more!

Printing for Less has versatile design options that are available to meet your marketing needs. We can print a standard size 9″ x 12″ folder or just about any custom size, thanks to our exact die cutting. Your folders can be printed on the outside with the inside either left blank or printed. Pocket folders have pockets on one or both sides to hold and organize your other printed marketing materials. The pockets can have slits to hold business cards or a mini-CD or DVD on one or both pockets. Special PMS or metallic inks with a dull or gloss spot varnish and UV coating can make your folder really stand out.

First Impressions and the Underrated Power of Presentation Folders

presentation folders

In the intricate dance of business relations, a first impression can be a make-or-break moment. It's a sentiment universally recognized across cultures, languages, and industries. A Harvard study even suggests that it takes just seven seconds for us to size up a person, an entity, or a brand. But what tools can businesses employ to tilt the balance in their favor during these crucial seconds? Enter the humble presentation folder. **Setting the Stage:** Imagine you're at a networking event or a business meeting. Amidst the clutter of digital tools, a tangible, professionally designed presentation folder stands out. It becomes a symbol of your brand's preparedness, attention to detail, and dedication to quality. **The Psychology Behind It:** Humans, by nature, appreciate aesthetics and order. A well-designed presentation folder that showcases branding with clarity and finesse taps into this inherent appreciation. It silently communicates a message of reliability and trustworthiness, establishing a positive foundation for the interaction. **Beyond Aesthetics – Organization is Key:** It's not merely about the visual appeal. A presentation folder is, first and foremost, a tool for organization. When documents are neatly arranged, categorized, and presented, it subtly signals to the recipient that you value their time. It's a showcase of efficiency, indicating that the interaction won't be marred by unnecessary delays or misplaced information. **Versatility in Application:** Presentation folders aren't just for boardroom pitches or sales meetings. They can be utilized in various scenarios – from handing out brochures at a trade show to disseminating press kits or onboarding new employees. In each of these situations, the message remains consistent: "We care about this interaction and have put thought into making it streamlined and valuable for you." **An Investment with Multiplying Returns:** While the initial cost of designing and procuring premium presentation folders might seem like an added expense, it's essential to view them as an investment. Over time, these folders become synonymous with the brand's identity. They can enhance brand recall and facilitate word-of-mouth marketing. After all, a client or associate is likely to reuse a high-quality folder, inadvertently showcasing your brand to a broader audience. **In Conclusion:** In the fleeting moments that constitute first impressions, every tool at a business's disposal becomes invaluable. Presentation folders are among the most potent of these tools. Their dual capability to impress both aesthetically and functionally makes them indispensable in the arsenal of modern businesses. As brands vie for attention in an increasingly crowded marketplace, it's often the finer details, like a meticulously designed presentation folder, that set them apart.

Our Presentation Folder Printing comes with the option to add a Pocket on just the right side or on both sides as per your requirements. You can also add Business Card Slits on the left pocket, the right pocket, or both of them that can fit any standard sized Business Card. Print Magic offers three types of Business Card Slit options -

Standard Horizontal Business Card Slits - This slit is on the top and bottom and comes with notched tabs that can hold a horizontally placed Business Card. These slits come with Presentation Folders that are sized 9" x 12”, 9.375" x 12”, and 9" x 14.5”.

Standard Vertical Business Card Slits - Similar to Horizontal Business Card Slits, these too come as notched tabs but are placed on the left and right to hold a vertically placed Business Card. These slits come with Presentation Folders that are sized 9" x 12”, 9.375" x 12”, and 9" x 14.5”.

Half Moon Business Card Slits - Two semi-circle slits are placed on the top and bottom to hold the Business Card in place. You can easily slide the card in and out as needed. These slits come with Custom Presentation Folders that are sized 6" x 9" or 4" x 9”.

Most standard Pockets inside Presentation Folders are 4” high in size as this size is perfect for holding multiple documents and papers in place without the Folder becoming too bulky. But you can get a 2.75” Pocket inside if you choose to print 6" x 9” Presentation Folders .

  • 9" x 12” Presentation Folders come with a 4” Pocket inside
  • 9.375" x 12” Presentation Folders come with a 4” Pocket inside
  • 9" x 14.5” Presentation Folders come with a 4” Pocket inside
  • 6" x 9” Presentation Folders come with a 2.75” Pocket inside
  • 4" x 9” Presentation Folders come with a 4” Pocket inside

The Horizontal Business Card Slits are placed 2.5” from the center fold of the Folder, 1” from the top, and .75” from the bottom of the Pocket. Vertical slits are placed 3.25” from the outside cutline, .25” from the top and bottom of the Pockets, and 3.5” from the center fold.

Presentation Folders are printed on a flat sheet of paper and they are cut, folded, and glued together to be assembled after. There are three elements in making the required printing file set up - the outside design, the inside design, and the design on the Pockets.

Take the example of creating a standard 9" x 12” Presentation Folder -

The first design for your file will be for the outside front and back covers, as well as both the Pockets. The right side is the front cover while the left side design will be for the back cover. The top 12” in the length of the paper will constitute the cover design and the bottom 4” will be the Pockets.

If you do not want any printing on the inside of the Folder, you can skip this step. For adding the design inside, keep in mind that the top 8” will be the visible part for printing as the bottom 4” will be the added Pocket. It is advised that you stretch your design to 12” so that the inside of the Pocket is also printed and cover the whole sheet for a cohesive look.

Pocket Design -

As stated above, the Pocket design is printed along with the front cover design, and the paper is folded inwards to create the Pocket. The design should be printed inverted to show it on the Pocket properly. Keep in mind that these Folders need a diagonal die where the centerfold is. This could cut up to .625” at the farthest point on both sides. The best way to ensure all your elements fit inside the printing line is to keep them away from this cut line.

Presentation Folders Ratings and Reviews

My company was finally able to order professional and high quality folders that matched our business. Having our logo printed on them will definitely help with referrals in the future.

The folders are very sturdy and the print quality was GREAT! We are very pleased with the end result and the value!

Amazed by the print quality and level of attention to detail. Outstanding Mini Presentation Folders !!

These folders came out perfect for our home show event! The colors were vibrant and caught everyone’s attention.

We created these presentation folders to hand out to prospective students to our school. The quality is great and we would definitely recommend.

The branded folders for our facility turned out perfectly. We were able to use Printmagic.com two color printing option to include our logo and custom color, and they came out exactly how I pictured them and under budget! I was given excellent service from a sales rep through the whole process. Definitely recommend!

Great website. Kept the detail history of my orders so there was very little for me to edit and reorder.

We are very happy with the folders. They turned out better than I anticipated and they were delivered before we anticipated!

Everything looks great! If I had an issue with a design, I was helped, and it was done to my liking.

I needed a folder done and I needed our three brands included but I wanted them to come together as one. The Printmagic designer produced a great design and my folders look amazing.

We needed these fast for an upcoming event. Customizing the design was super easy and when we received them, the quality was surprisingly good. Arrived as expected and we’re super happy with the results. Pricing is competitive, though it would be awesome if they could offer a slightly lower price tier for non-profit organizations like ours.

What the New Overtime Rule Means for Workers

Collage shows four professionals in business casual clothing.

One of the basic principles of the American workplace is that a hard day’s work deserves a fair day’s pay. Simply put, every worker’s time has value. A cornerstone of that promise is the  Fair Labor Standards Act ’s (FLSA) requirement that when most workers work more than 40 hours in a week, they get paid more. The  Department of Labor ’s new overtime regulation is restoring and extending this promise for millions more lower-paid salaried workers in the U.S.

Overtime protections have been a critical part of the FLSA since 1938 and were established to protect workers from exploitation and to benefit workers, their families and our communities. Strong overtime protections help build America’s middle class and ensure that workers are not overworked and underpaid.

Some workers are specifically exempt from the FLSA’s minimum wage and overtime protections, including bona fide executive, administrative or professional employees. This exemption, typically referred to as the “EAP” exemption, applies when:

1. An employee is paid a salary,

2. The salary is not less than a minimum salary threshold amount, and

3. The employee primarily performs executive, administrative or professional duties.

While the department increased the minimum salary required for the EAP exemption from overtime pay every 5 to 9 years between 1938 and 1975, long periods between increases to the salary requirement after 1975 have caused an erosion of the real value of the salary threshold, lessening its effectiveness in helping to identify exempt EAP employees.

The department’s new overtime rule was developed based on almost 30 listening sessions across the country and the final rule was issued after reviewing over 33,000 written comments. We heard from a wide variety of members of the public who shared valuable insights to help us develop this Administration’s overtime rule, including from workers who told us: “I would love the opportunity to...be compensated for time worked beyond 40 hours, or alternately be given a raise,” and “I make around $40,000 a year and most week[s] work well over 40 hours (likely in the 45-50 range). This rule change would benefit me greatly and ensure that my time is paid for!” and “Please, I would love to be paid for the extra hours I work!”

The department’s final rule, which will go into effect on July 1, 2024, will increase the standard salary level that helps define and delimit which salaried workers are entitled to overtime pay protections under the FLSA.

Starting July 1, most salaried workers who earn less than $844 per week will become eligible for overtime pay under the final rule. And on Jan. 1, 2025, most salaried workers who make less than $1,128 per week will become eligible for overtime pay. As these changes occur, job duties will continue to determine overtime exemption status for most salaried employees.

Who will become eligible for overtime pay under the final rule? Currently most salaried workers earning less than $684/week. Starting July 1, 2024, most salaried workers earning less than $844/week. Starting Jan. 1, 2025, most salaried workers earning less than $1,128/week. Starting July 1, 2027, the eligibility thresholds will be updated every three years, based on current wage data. DOL.gov/OT

The rule will also increase the total annual compensation requirement for highly compensated employees (who are not entitled to overtime pay under the FLSA if certain requirements are met) from $107,432 per year to $132,964 per year on July 1, 2024, and then set it equal to $151,164 per year on Jan. 1, 2025.

Starting July 1, 2027, these earnings thresholds will be updated every three years so they keep pace with changes in worker salaries, ensuring that employers can adapt more easily because they’ll know when salary updates will happen and how they’ll be calculated.

The final rule will restore and extend the right to overtime pay to many salaried workers, including workers who historically were entitled to overtime pay under the FLSA because of their lower pay or the type of work they performed.

We urge workers and employers to visit  our website to learn more about the final rule.

Opening Statements in Trump’s Criminal Trial: Five Takeaways

Prosecutors signaled a sweeping case and Donald J. Trump’s lawyers began their assault on witnesses’ credibility. The judge seems intent on expediting the first trial of an American president.

  • Share full article

Former President Donald J. Trump sitting at table in a dark suit. An officer stands behind him and gestures.

By Jesse McKinley and Kate Christobek

  • April 22, 2024

Monday marked another key moment in the criminal trial of Donald J. Trump: opening statements, during which the former president listened quietly to the prosecution’s allegations of crimes, and the defense’s counterargument that he was a simple man, wrongly accused.

The jury that will decide Mr. Trump’s case concentrated intently on the statements, which began the presentation of what will be weeks of testimony and other evidence, all in a tense courtroom in Lower Manhattan.

The presumptive Republican presidential nominee once more, Mr. Trump, 77, is charged with falsifying 34 business records in an attempt to cover up a payment to a porn star, Stormy Daniels, in the days before the 2016 election. Ms. Daniels, who may testify, says that she and Mr. Trump had a sexual encounter in 2006, a claim the former president denies.

Mr. Trump has also denied the 34 felony charges, calling them orchestrated by Democrats; if convicted, the former president could face probation or up to four years in prison.

Here are five takeaways from Mr. Trump’s fifth day on trial:

The prosecution has a big story to tell.

The charges faced by Mr. Trump may sound bland — “falsifying business records” doesn’t really set the heart racing — but the prosecution made clear on Monday that it plans on painting a much broader picture.

Matthew Colangelo, a prosecutor, laid out in his opening statement a tale that touched on tabloid journalism , tawdry affairs and covertly recorded phone calls . Jurors will likely be told about events inside fancy hotel rooms, Trump Tower and even the Oval Office. And the stakes? The presidency.

All that suggests that the case will keep jurors wide-awake during the six or so weeks it is projected to take. Indeed, when asked if they wanted paper and pens to take notes, more than half of the people in the jury box (12 jurors and six alternates) raised their hands.

Who Are Key Players in the Trump Manhattan Criminal Trial?

The first criminal trial of former President Donald J. Trump is underway. Take a closer look at central figures related to the case.

The defense wants to destroy prosecution witnesses.

Mr. Trump’s lead lawyer, Todd Blanche, used his opening statement to cast Mr. Trump’s actions leading to this case as run-of-the-mill business, and said that Mr. Trump is defending himself at trial, just as “any of us would do.”

He argued that the use of a nondisclosure agreement — the document Ms. Daniels signed after receiving the payment — was typical among the wealthy and the famous and “nothing illegal.” He continued that there was nothing wrong with trying to influence an election, adding: “It’s called democracy.”

Mr. Blanche also attacked Mr. Cohen, a former lawyer and fixer for Mr. Trump. He said Mr. Cohen, who pleaded guilty to federal campaign finance crimes in 2018, was a “criminal” who “can’t be trusted.” He added that Ms. Daniels was “biased” against Mr. Trump and made a living off her story about the sexual encounter.

He called the heart of the prosecution case just “34 pieces of paper” that don’t involve Mr. Trump.

Trump was muted during the abbreviated day in court.

On Mr. Trump’s way into the courtroom on Monday, he addressed reporters for about three minutes and blasted a range of perceived enemies, including New York’s attorney general, Letitia James, and the judge in a recent civil fraud case that resulted in a $454 million judgment against him.

But Mr. Trump’s behavior during opening statements reflected that he understood the gravity of the moment.

Mr. Trump made no outbursts during the prosecution’s opening statement, although he occasionally showed displeasure: He shook his head slightly at arguments that he orchestrated a scheme to corrupt the presidential election and then more strenuously when prosecutors said he was guilty of felonies.

During his own side’s opening statement, Mr. Trump sat largely motionless and expressionless watching his lawyer Mr. Blanche. Mr. Trump’s behavior was muted compared with his volatility during past Manhattan court appearances.

But at the conclusion of the trial day, Mr. Trump took his preferred spot in front of a television camera in the hallway, and spoke for more than nine minutes, attacking the prosecutor’s case — once again — as unfair.

David Pecker used to live on celebrity news. Now, he is the news.

Prosecutors’ first witness was David Pecker, the longtime publisher of The National Enquirer . He ambled to the stand and promptly gave a lesson in the ways of tabloid journalism, including the purchasing of articles — anything more than $10,000, he had to approve — and the significance of putting a famous face right out front.

“The only thing that was important is the cover of a magazine,” Mr. Pecker testified.

In about 30 minutes of testimony, Mr. Pecker also laid out trade secrets on sourcing, saying hotel workers and limo drivers could be a font of information on the rich and famous.

He seemed at ease: laughing at a prosecutor’s jokes, and sometimes directly addressing the jury just a few feet away.

We’re moving right along.

Over the past five trial days, the judge overseeing the case, Juan M. Merchan, has shown that he is eager to keep this trial on schedule. He seems serious about keeping his word to the jurors that the trial will last six weeks.

On Monday, truncated by a juror’s dental emergency and the Passover holiday, he decided to start with the first witness — Mr. Pecker — despite having only half an hour left on his schedule.

On Tuesday, the court will first consider a prosecution motion to hold Mr. Trump in contempt over recent comments that they say violated a gag order meant to keep him from attacking participants in the trial and their families.

Then, Mr. Pecker will continue on the stand, probably diving deeper into the “catch-and-kill” scheme used to buy up — and cover up — unflattering stories, a central element of the prosecution’s narrative.

Court will end early again, at 2 p.m., for further observance of Passover and then will have its weekly Wednesday break.

But there is little indication that as the weeks pass, Justice Merchan will let the pace slacken.

7 First Impressions of Moscow, Russia (From a Street Photography Perspective)

moscow-impressions-cover

At over 12 million people, Moscow is the second largest city in Europe by population. It’s an urban, cosmopolitan city of the highest level, with more than enough glitz to cater to the elite, but without losing its fair share of roughness around the edges. It can be fast paced, brash, busy, and trendy like other big cities, but it has its blend of European and Russian that makes it stand out on its own. And the most beautiful subway system you’ve ever seen.

moscow-sf-19

So here are my first impressions of Moscow, from my personal Street Photographer perspective…

7 First Impressions of Moscow  (From a Street Photography Perspective)

1. big city with so much to discover.

It’s no secret that Moscow is a big city, but it can feel even bigger with how spread out much of it is. This is especially true if you compare it to cities outside of Asia. If I compared it to cities in Europe, I’d probably say only Istanbul would warrant more time to really discover the depths of this city. Most only explore around the Red Square and surrounding area, but that is such a small part of the city. Although, that central area does give you plenty to see on its own.

moscow-sf-15

Fortunately, I had a good friend living in the city to show me around, but it opened up my eyes even more to how much there is to discover in Moscow. It’s a big city with a variety of atmosphere that can take you from “east” to “west” and trendy to rugged depending on where you go. I’d imagine you’d have to live here a while to really know the city.

2. Museum Metro

1st presentation folder

The Moscow metro system was the first underground railway system in the Soviet Union and today includes 203 stations across 340km of routes. The elaborate system has some of the deepest stations in the world too, with escalators that seem to go on forever. None of this is what makes it so special, though. Many of its stations feel like stepping inside a museum, making it without a doubt the most interesting and beautiful metro system I’ve been in.

moscow-sf-18

When built, Stalin wanted to make the metro stations “palaces for the people” with marble, chandeliers, and grand architecture. The best part is the variety of architecture and styles used, making many of the stations a completely different experience visually. You could easily spend a whole day traveling the stations and there are even tours available for people who wish to do just that. My advice, though, would be just to buy a ticket and hop on and off at different stations, while exploring different lines. The museum-like surrounding mixed with the crowds of characters can make for a great photography experience.

moscow-sf-35

Since there are so many stations, here are some of my favorites to definitely check out:

  • Novoslobodskaya
  • Mayakovskaya
  • Elektrozavodskaya
  • Komsomolskaya
  • Ploschad Revolyutsii
  • Dostoyevskaya
  • Prospekt Mira

3. Not as walkable as Saint-Petersburg

While Saint-Petersburg feels very walkable for a city its size, Moscow can feel very spread out, even for its bigger size. Outside of the Red Square area, you can have a lot of walking before getting anywhere very interesting, so you’ll need to take the metro a lot if you really want to explore the city. Maps are deceiving here too, it will always be further than it looks.

moscow-sf-45

Another reason it’s less walkable than Saint-Petersburg is its completely different set-up. Moscow’s streets are mostly contstructed in rings with narrow, winding streets in-between. This is common with medieval city cities that used to be confined by walls, but you usually don’t have it in a city this massive. Saint-Petersburg has a more grid-like pattern that also uses the canals to help you know your way around. When it comes to navigating on foot in Moscow, it can be more difficult, so bring a map and take the metro when needed. It’s why Moscow’s metro carries more passengers per day than the London and Paris subways combined.

moscow-sf-52

4.  Gorky Park is like a Russian Central Park

One of the most famous places in Moscow is Gorky Park. The official name is Maxim Gorky’s Central Park of Culture & Leisure, which gives you an idea of what goes on here. When built, it was the first of its kind in the Soviet Union. Divided into two parts, it stretches along Moscow River. One end contains fair rides, foods stands, tennis courts, a sports club, a lake for boat rides, and more. This end brings more active life due to its number of attractions, while the other end is more relaxed, where you’ll find gardens, trees, older buildings, and an outdoor amphitheater.

moscow-sf-30

Gorky Park attracts mostly locals so it’s a good spot to capture the non-tourist side of Moscow life. Muscovites come here to escape the city and unwind in a picturesque setting. The park remains alive outside of the warmer months too, especially when the lake turns into the city’s largest outdoor skating rink. I’d recommend taking the metro out here to spend at least half a day exploring the massive park’s life with your camera.

5. Half the city under construction

European cities in general seem to be filled with more construction than usual lately. But while this won’t be true forever, Moscow was filled with the most I’ve ever seen. Moscow already has the most skyscrapers in Europe, with many being less than a decade old. In only the last few years, the three tallest skyscrapers in Europe have opened here, giving it five of Europe’s ten tallest. The 2018 FIFA Word Cup is bringing much of this on, but the city is pushing to complete a skyline here than will rival any in the world.

moscow-sf-51

The recession has slowed down the construction some, but the government is pushing it on. So all over the city, there were sidewalks covered with wood boards and lined with striped construction walls. At first, it was a little disappointing from a street photography perspective to see so much blocked by construction. After a while, though, it became something to capture. The striped construction materials and signs are colorful and all the workers created some interesting activity. It will be interesting to see what the city looks like when everything is complete, but for now, the construction provides interest itself.

moscow-sf-42

6. Learn the Russian Alphabet

Much of Moscow, including the metro system, doesn’t use english. The Russian alphabet uses letters from the Cyrillic script, which if you aren’t familiar with it and don’t know the sounds, it can be hard to decipher the words. This is most important for street names and metro stops when trying to get around. It can save confusion and make it easier getting around if you learn the basic alphabet. At the very least then, you can sound out the words to see which are similar in the english conversion, which can help matching them to maps. When out shooting street photography, getting around is as important as anything. So save yourself some time and frustration by learning the Russian Alphabet.

moscow-sf-17

7. Where East Meets West

Modern skyscrapers mixed with amazing architecture, a world-class metro system with a museum-like beauty, trendy fashion and chic clubs, Moscow is a rich mix of Russian culture and history in a more European package. There is a push to keep the Russian culture, while pushing forward with a modern metropolis the whole world will envy. This comes with an impressive skyline and modernities with soviet emblems and atmosphere mixed in for good measure.

moscow-sf-26

It’s East meets West, modernizations meets Soviet nostalgia, and a whole lot more.

Russia’s Metropolis

Moscow is famous around the world, but it might not be completely what you expect from Russia’s capital. The city’s name brings a certain mystique, but once you’re there it brings something changed over time since its Soviet days. It’s big and sprawling, but beautiful in many ways. Most might say it feels more like a European capital on a grand scale, but you can definitely find its Russian side in there.

moscow-sf-48

The urban sprawl of Moscow can be intimidating, but give it enough time and you’ll be rewarded with plenty to discover. All with the world’s best metro system to take you around.

If any of you have been to Moscow before, tell me about your experience and impressions of the city and country in the comments below! And stay tuned for more on Moscow, including some of the best Street Photography shots I captured while there.
