The Department of Philosophy offers a Doctoral Program in a variety of areas, for instance Metaphysics and Philosophy of Mind and Cognition, History of Philosophy, and Moral and Political Philosophy. For more information on possible areas of research, please consult the profiles of individual faculty members and our list of research areas .

Program Objectives

The program provides top-level up-to-date training in different areas in philosophy in order to prepare students for academic life (attending conferences, participating in research projects, and publishing in professional journals), to enable them to teach philosophy at university level, and to do independent research in different fields of philosophy.

Program Structure

For entry requirements, please visit the PhD Application page .

In their first year, doctoral students have the status of  Probationary Doctoral Candidates . They participate in the life of the department, attend courses offered by the department and write a first year paper. At the end of the first year of their studies, probationary doctoral candidates take the oral comprehensive examination. In the examination, they present their thesis plan and answer questions concerning their plan and first year paper.

Students who successfully complete their course work and pass the comprehensive examination receive the status of  Doctoral Candidates . Doctoral candidates have a supervisor with whom they regularly meet and who supervises their work. During their second and third year, students are primarily engaged in independent research under the guidance of their supervisor. Doctoral candidates participate in the academic life of the department and attend seminars, lectures and programs, including the annual in-house graduate conference and the biennial international graduate conference, which they organise. In the second and third years, students attend the Doctoral Seminar, which provides a forum to acquire professional skills and receive continuous feedback on their work. Students can submit their dissertation at the end of the third year of their studies and not later than six years after the date of their original enrolment.

Summary of credits to be earned

Doctoral Thesis and Defence

At the end of their studies, students submit a doctoral dissertation, which provides either an original contribution to the deeper understanding of one or more philosophical problems or a defensible attempt to solve them. A defence takes place after the receipt of a sufficient number of positive examiners’ reports.

Despite sharing the same specialization, the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) have many differences. Some of the fundamental differences are as follows:

Candidates who register for the program will be considered by the application department before joining the program, in addition to the entry requirements, to ensure that they understand and benefit from it.

Entry requirements must meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • Master’s degrees in specific fields from accredited universities.
  • RQF (UK), EQF (Europe), or equivalent level 7. Level 7 diplomas must be obtained from accredited institutions.
  • Université Libérale de Paris does not accept degrees from fake universities, Diploma Mills, or recognized universities but from untrustworthy accreditation bodies.

English language requirements:

  • English at or above CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference) level B2.
  • IELTS 5.5; Speaking and writing must both be 5.5 or higher.
  • In the lack of an English certification, the Université Libérale de Paris (Paris-U) conducts an internal English test and evaluates each candidate.

The Université Libérale de Paris (Paris-U) reserves the right to accept or reject applications based on accrediting agency requirements and Paris-U’s global acceptance criteria.

The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) program is a dual degree program. Graduates will receive the following:

The Level 8 Diploma in Strategic Management and Leadership from LRN.

Faculty of Humanities

Phd programmes.

Utrecht University is one of the best research universities in Europe, and we give talented researchers every opportunity to develop. Around 150 PhD candidates are active within the Graduate School of Humanities. The faculty has different types of PhD positions . Several dozen candidates obtain their PhD every year.

As a PhD candidate, you carry out your own research, resulting in a doctoral thesis. You will also follow an educational progamme aimed at academic professionalisation and improving your personal effectiveness. The courses in this programme focus on research-related subjects, such as developing and formulating the problem definition of your own research, and on skills related to personal development, such as managing your work relationships and effective communication.

Supervision

In order to enable PhD candidates to evolve into leading researchers, the Graduate School of Humanities places a considerable emphasis on effective supervision during the PhD phase. We have, for example, a special PhD candidate mentor to whom PhD candidates may turn for coaching and advice on matters such as their relationship with their supervisor, fear of failure, staying on top of your schedule, etcetera.

Supervision tips

The Graduate School also supports PhD candidates and their supervisors by providing advice and checklists on important subjects such as: What is expected of a PhD candidate? What components should a dissertation contain? How can supervisors prevent problems during the course of the PhD programme?

PhD Candidate Consultation

To ensure that the supervision and teaching at the Graduate School meet the needs of the PhD candidates, there is a PhD council. In addition, Utrecht University has Prout (Promovendi Overleg Utrecht), a network representing PhD candidates from throughout the university.

Jobs in Philosophy in Europe

The Ethics Institute of Utrecht University’s department of Philosophy and Religious Studies seeks a researcher for a four-year, full-time PhD project “Disrupting ageing: Personhood, meaning, and vulnerability across the lifespan”, as part of the ESDiT – Ethics of Socially Disruptive Technologies – Research Programme ( www.esdit.nl ).

About the role The ageing of societies is one of the 21st century’s most disruptive demographic trends. Simultaneously, age-related technologies challenge the ‘naturalness’ of ageing and draw into focus ambiguities in the concept of ageing itself. Since ageing is a phenomenon infused with normativity, with normative expectations corresponding to phases in the human life cycle, the conceptual cleavage of ageing invites innovation in related moral concepts. This PhD project examines ways in which technologies that bear on ageing disrupt biological, socio-cultural, and normative understandings of ageing. It considers how these disruptions generate fruitful possibilities for reconceptualisation of ageing itself, as well as intertwined normative ideas of personhood, meaning, and vulnerability. In doing so, the project will investigate non-western and non-canonical ideas that might reinvigorate core moral concepts implicated by ageing.

Requirements - Master’s degree or equivalent degree in Philosophy, Ethics, or Political Philosophy/Theory. Other Master’s degrees will also be considered if you have a demonstrable expertise in analytical/conceptual problems and approaches to normative justification, in close connection with the themes of the research project. - Interest in moral and political philosophy, applied ethics, and normative issues related to technology; - Knowledge in a more specialised field relevant to the project (e.g. solidarity, ethics of technology, conceptual disruption, etc.) is welcome. - Especially welcome are approaches to this project that engage with traditions and perspectives that are currently marginalised within Western philosophy.

Offer - a position for a period of 18 months - in case of good performance and a positive evaluation, the contract will be extended for the remaining period of 30 months (4 years in total); - a working week of 38 hours and a gross monthly salary between €2,770 and €3,539 in the case of full-time employment You have an excellent track record and research skills, relative to experience, and excellent academic writing and presentation skills.

The expected starting date is 1 October 2024. For more information, please contact Christopher Wareham external link via c [dot] s [dot] wareham [__at__] uu [dot] nl

The Field of Excellence Climate Change Graz is offering 5 post-doctoral fellowships at the University of Graz, Austria, for 3 months. Dates for stays can start as early as June 2024 or latest in March 2025, but ideally run from October to December 2024, to encourage collaboration among the fellows. The fellowship will cover costs of travel, housing, and subsistence up to € 8,000 in total. The University of Graz will cover liability and accident insurance, while health insurance needs to be covered by fellows (is typically covered by existing EU plans, or through affordable travel insurance options). Note, however, that fellows will not be employed by the University of Graz, and will also need to organize any residence permits or visas needed for the duration of the fellowship ahead of time. The program will assist in finding suitable housing close to the university.

The program is designed for PostDoc researchers (up to 6 years after receiving their Ph.D.; applicants after their submission of their Ph.D. thesis can be considered as well) from all academic fields working on climate change who wish to collaborate with one (or more) of the research groups of the Field of Excellence Climate Change Graz. External candidates are strongly encouraged.

Participants will work under the direct mentorship of an experienced Uni Graz scientist in a unique inter- and transdisciplinary research environment. The research stay should be focused on a specific project, e.g. a joint research program, paper, or grant proposal. Fellows will have the opportunity to build up contacts for future collaboration within the Field of Excellence Climate Change Graz's international network. While the call is open for all topics of climate change – including improved understanding of the processes of climate change, observed impacts and projected risks for natural and human systems, questions of mitigation, adaptation and resilience, or related ethical and legal dimensions – we are particularly interested in contributions to the following interdisciplinary research fields, among others:

• Intertemporal Dimensions in Climate Litigation; see Research Group Research Center ClimLaw: Graz and the Climate and Environmental Ethics Research Field ( https://climate-change.uni-graz.at/en/research-fields/climate-and-enviro... )

• Epistemology of Climate Models and Realistic Possibilities in Climate Risk Assessment; see Regional Climate Research Group and the Climate and Environmental Ethics Research Field

• Interdisciplinary Approaches for Assessing the Fair Allocation of Benefits and Burdens of the Transformation to Climate Neutrality; see Research Group Economics of Climate and Global Change and the Climate and Environmental Ethics Research Field

Applicants can choose to work with two research groups and should indicate their preferred host. We encourage contacting the research group representative(s) who you would like to choose as your host before submitting your application. All fellows will need to be present at the University of Graz, Austria (i.e. no working remotely) for the full duration of the fellowship.

Previous fellows in Climate and Environmental Ethics include Dr. Jeroen Hopster and Dr. Ross Mittiga.

The University of Graz strives to increase the proportion of women in scientific positions and therefore encourages qualified women to apply.

Applications process Applicants are required to submit a 2-page research proposal for the work they intend to conduct during their fellowship. In addition, a short motivation letter (stating your preferred host and an indication of interdisciplinary linkage you want to deepen) and a CV with a complete list of publications are required. Please provide contact information for three people who could give recommendations, but do not include reference letters in the application as these will not be considered.

Applications to the 2024 program are possible until 30th April 2024 by sending their application material to martina [dot] rath [__at__] uni-graz [dot] at (midnight CEST). Online interviews with the most suitable candidates will be held by an interdisciplinary selection committee in late April and beginning of May, so that the decision is available in mid May 2024.

Your tasks: At the Department of Liberal Arts and Sciences, you represent the subject of theoretical philosophy with a focus on epistemology in research and teaching. In this department, excellent, international researchers from the humanities, social and natural sciences collaborate in an interdisciplinary way - also with the Department of Engineering, which comprises the technical sciences. You are significantly involved in the development of the first departmental focus "Human and Artificial Intelligence", which is dedicated to the possibilities and limits of artificial intelligence and human cognitive ability. The goal is to combine specific human rational reasoning skills with the strengths of AI applications in their development, application, and evaluation. For this purpose, you will collaborate with colleagues from the fields of History of Philosophy, Classical Philology and Experimental Psychology as well as Cognitive Psychology and the scientists specialising in "Robotics and Artificial Intelligence" at the Department of Engineering.

Your profile: This position is particularly intended for early career researchers, who show great potential for scientific development. Your research should focus on systematic approaches to epistemology. A recognizable openness to historical, research approaches to epistemology is an advantage, preferably regarding a period before the 20th century. Initial research achievements in other areas of theoretical philosophy are welcome. You should be able to demonstrate all these characteristics of your research profile through relevant publications.

In your application and in the selection process, you should demonstrate the relevance of your work for interdisciplinary dialog with other disciplines and your willingness to participate in the Department's focus "Human and Artificial Intelligence". Teaching experience, ideally in interdisciplinary contexts, is desired. We expect your participation in all teaching activities at the Department, including study course planning and engagement in the development of innovative digital teaching and learning concepts, as well as cooperation within and across departments.

The legal hiring criteria according to Article 57 Paragraph 1 BayHIG apply.

Our offer: The position is a fixed-term (6 year) professorship (W2). At the end of this fixed-term period, in case of a positive tenure-evaluation, the position will be converted to a permanent professorship (W3). The tenure-track statutes of the UTN (from April 20th 2023) apply.

The University of Technology Nuremberg is rethinking the university on all levels. We offer a motivated and excellent international team in which you can contribute with all your ideas and competencies. You will be able to experience and develop new, interdisciplinary forms of research collaboration as well as teaching and learning and help us shaping them. We will make sure that you are able to fully focus on your work by our modern, service-oriented administrative units. We see diversity as an asset. The University of Technology Nuremberg is a place that offers knowledge and equal opportunities to people regardless of gender, age, sexual orientation, ideology, religion, origin or disability. The position is suitable to be filled by severely disabled persons. Severely disabled applicants will be given preference if their suitability, qualification, and professional performance are otherwise essentially equal. We see family-friendliness as the basis for achieving equal opportunities for men and women in science. Therefore, we offer flexible ways of working, family-friendly times for events and meetings, as well as dual-career options. The University of Technology Nuremberg aims at increasing the proportion of women in research and teaching and therefore strongly encourages women to apply.

The Indian Philosophy Blog

A group blog of scholars exploring Indian philosophy

Listings of Ph.D. Programs in Indian Philosophy (2017 Edition; Part II: Europe)

This post is the European continuation of Andrew Nicholson’s one . Andrew is also the one who prompted me to write a European list.

Indian philosophy is taught in at least two different places in Europe: (South) Asian (or Oriental or Indological) Studies and —less often— Philosophy departments. The dominant trend of US universities, where Indian philosophy is taught predominantly in Religious Studies departments is only evident in the UK. Departments of Asian Studies, of Oriental Studies or of Indology, often have a philological focus (so that knowing Sanskrit or other relevant languages is strongly recommended, although not compulsory), whereas studying Indian Philosophy in a Philosophy department may imply having to avoid Sanskrit.

Further elements for non-European students and scholars: 1) university fees are by and large very low in Europe (between nothing and 1,500 E per year for full-time students) and in many countries funding is available, so that one gets paid for being a PhD student —very often being a PhD student is much easier than being a post-Doc! 2) the main point of a PhD course in Europe is the final output, i.e., your dissertation. You might have to attend classes (or not), but the main focus should remain the fact of becoming an independent researcher, and this is proved by your ability to write a book on your own. 3) do not choose a certain department on the basis of your expectations to have a career in Indian Philosophy. Write a PhD in Indian Philosophy (only) because you are interested in it. There are little or no SLACs in Europe and in this sense you cannot really plan a career as a university teacher of Indian Philosophy in Europe (you might have a few more chances as a researcher, but this involves being willing and able to do research with others, or alone and to apply for fundings).

Now, a disclaimer: the European landscape of research related to Indian philosophy is variegated. I have surely forgotten many institutions (for instance, as far as I know, there is no one working on Indian philosophy in Spain, Portugal, Greece, Malta…is this really the case?) and have not been exhaustive in the case of others (for instance, I have been unable to gather exhaustive informations concerning Croatia and Hungary). I rely on readers for emendations and supplements.

The elements which will be listed, beside the universities, are: AOS, whether funding is possible and whether it is possible to write one’s PhD thesis in English. In all cases, no information does not mean that it is impossible, it only means that I have no information about it.

  • AUSTRIA (possibility to write a PhD thesis in English)

University of Vienna (Institute of South Asian, Tibetology and Buddhist Studies) Sanskrit philosophy, especially Nyāya, Mīmāṃsā and Viśiṣṭādvaita Vedānta, Āyurveda, Sanskrit philology, Buddhist philosophy, especially Pramāṇavāda and Mādhyamaka, Tibetan philosophy

University of Vienna (Institute of Philosophy) Intercultural philosophy (a main focus on Indian philosophy is possible)

funding possibilities: through the FWF, the Academy of Sciences or the University itself (in all cases you need the approval of a supervisor)

NB: some directors of studies affiliated to the IKGA (Institute for the Cultural and Intellectual History of Asia, Austrian Academy of Sciences) may also accept PhD students, although those institutions do not directly deliver diplomas.

  • BELGIUM (possibility to write a PhD thesis in English)

Brussel, Vrije Universiteit (Antwerp FVG, Faculty for Comparative Study of Religions) (Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, Jainism, Indian Philosophy, especially Vedānta schools, Kaśmīr Śaivism) 2 funding posibilities: FWO (regional) and BOF (university)

Ghent (dept. of languages and cultures of South and East Asia) (Jainism, Buddhism, Indian Philosophy)

Louvain, Université catholique de Louvain (Catholic University of Louvain in Louvain-la-Neuve): —(Faculty of Letters, Oriental Institute, with Christoph Vielle ) —(Faculty of Theology, Religious sciences, with Philippe Cornu (Buddhism, esp. Tibetan one))

Zagreb (Humanities) (Upaniṣads, Vedānta)

  • CZECH REPUBLIC UPDATED

Charles University of Prague (Institute of Philosophy & Religious Studies) (please note that you’ll need to find a suitable supervisor)

  • FRANCE (possibility to write a PhD in English)

Paris, EPHE (4th section and especially 5th section, “Sciences Religieuses”) (Brahmanical systems, Buddhist philosophy (including Tibetan), Śaiva philosophy, philosophy of language (Sanskrit and, in case, Tibetan), very limited possibility for fundings

Paris III-Sorbonne Nouvelle (Department of Indian Studies) (Buddhist and Brahmanical philosophy, special focus on Śaiva philosophy, aesthetics).

Paris IV-Sorbonne, Department of philosophy (Comparative philosophy, general Indian philosophy). No Sanskrit needed for Masters-degree, needed for PhD but not taught at Paris IV; most students take an additional degree at Paris III.

Lille III (Tantrism)

Lyon 3-Jean Moulin / Institut de Recherches Philosophiques de Lyon: Jaina philosophy.

NB: some directors of studies affiliated to the EFEO (Ecole française d’Extrême-Orient, mostly based in Paris and Pondicherry) or to the CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, Paris) may also accept PhD students, although those institutions do not directly deliver diplomas.

  • GERMANY (possibility to write a PhD in English, very low fees, special emphasis on Sanskrit texts, so that critical editions (also) of philosophical texts are possible also at other locations) (in all cases below, the universities have an “institute of Indology” or something similar)

Thank you for this!

For Belgium, I would not include the Antwerp Faculty for Comparative Study of Religions (despite its formal agreement with the VUB = Flemish-Speaking Free University of Brussels) since this “open Faculty” (where most of the teachers are not doctors) does not offer Ph.D. grades or programs. See http://www.antwerpfvg.org/info-studenten/diploma.html or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faculty_for_Comparative_Religion

Beside the University of Ghent, the Université catholique de Louvain (Catholic University of Louvain in Louvain-la-Neuve) should be mentioned : a Ph.D. in Indian philosophy is possible both in the Faculty of Letters, Oriental Institute, with me (classical Indology): https://uclouvain.be/fr/instituts-recherche/incal/ciol/gris.html or in the Faculty of Theology, Religious sciences, with Philippe Cornu (Buddhism, esp. Tibetan one): https://uclouvain.be/fr/instituts-recherche/rscs/grebh-groupe-de-recherche-en-etudes-bouddhiques-et-hindouistes.html See, completed in 2006, the doctoral work of Sandra Smets ‘La question de la non-dualité dans la Jaiminīyasaṃhitā du Brahmāṇḍapurāṇa’ (issued in 2013: http://www.peeters-leuven.be/boekoverz.asp?nr=9120 ); or, in course of achievement, Dylan Esler’s ‘The Lamp for the Eye of Contemplation’ (critical edition, annotated translation and historical cum hermeneutical study of the doxographical bSam-gtan mig-sgron); https://uclouvain.academia.edu/DylanEsler

Dear colleagues, thank you very much for your precious initiative! For us, in Russia, it helps to show our Eurocentric colleagues that studies of Indian philosophy have an important role in education all over the world. From my side, I would like to propose a little bit more detailed list of Moscow institutions where our indologists are working and may have students of different levels. It does not mean that they really do))) Moscow (Department of Oriental Philosophies, Chair of Indian Philosophy, Institute of Philosophy, Russian Academy of Sciences) (History of Indian Philosophy, Buddhist and Brahmanic Epistemology, Comparative and Intercultural philosophy) Moscow (Chair of History of Philosophy and Chair of History and Theory of World Culture, Philosophical Department, Moscow State University) (History of Indian Philosophy, Vyākaraṇa, Sanskrit Philology) Moscow (Faculty of Humanities, the School of Philosophy, National Research University – “Higher School of Economics”)(History of Indian Philosophy, Buddhist Logic) Moscow (Institute for Oriental Cultures, Russian State University for Humanities) ( Indian Philology) Moscow (Centre for Ancient East Studies, Institute of Oriental Studies, Russian Academy of Sciences) (Buddhist philosophy and Religion, Jaina Philosophy) St. Petersburg (St. Petersburg State University) (Bhartṛhari, Vyākaraṇa, Buddhism, some Indian philology) St Petersburg (Institute of Oriental Manuscripts (Buddhist philosophy, Kaśmīri Śaivism, Bhartṛhari, Tibetan Buddhism)

Thank you! Few additional remarks: 1) dissertation is the main output, but in many Universities, a PhD Students has obligation to publish (articles) and participate in conferences too. 2) you’re slightly optimistic with the philosophy Department in Vienna ;): there is no focus on Indian philosophy within the Intercultural Philosophy, definitely not on modern. Rather: different projects can be accepted within the broad “global” philosophy, if they are accepted by a supervisor… PhD Fundings can also come from the OeAW. 3) I would add the INALCO in Paris, although I have to admit I am not aware how exactly it works (in ancient and modern India, emphasis on language): http://www.inalco.fr/departement/asie-sud-himalaya 4) I would also add Prague, although again in practice I am not aware how exactly it works: https://www.ff.cuni.cz/home/about/organisation/institute-of-south-and-central-asia/ 5) It is in Europe worth looking at Graduate Schools and Erasmus Mundus Programmes (or programmes by the EU, although they have been reduced) but these ones are often set up for a delimited time, so it’s difficult to make a definitive list. 6) Maybe for English-speakers in America and elsewhere: being able to write a PhD in English does not mean that one will not have to learn the regional language of the country one will study in, and of course there are strong differences in Europe of English integration in Departments and Institutes (classes can be/are often in the regional language rather than English)…
