Janmashtami At My Home

Janmashtami holds a special place in my heart and my experience of Janmashtami brings back nostalgic memories. I used to eagerly watch the reenactment of Krishna's birth and immerse myself in movies, plays, and discussions about his life with my sisters. Janmashtami includes various rituals, but personally, my favourite thing to do was to decorate the whole place and also dress like a Krishna idol. We used to set aside money from our allowance to honour Lord Krishna's birthday. In a way, it was a lot of fun. I yearn for those younger years.In school also teachers used to ask us to write a paragraph on Janmashtami celebration.

My sister and brother assisted with the decorations. We celebrated modestly last year inside our mandir due to the circumstances brought on by the pandemic's onset. Shree Krishna Janmashtami, mostly famous as Janmashtami or Gokulashtami, is a yearly festival of the Hindu, which is celebrated as the birthday of Lord Krishna, the eighth incarnation of Vishnu.

According to the Hindu Luni-Solar calendar, the dark day of Shravan or Bhadrapada (the dark side) is the eighth day (Ashtami) (depending on whether the calendar selects the new moon or full moon day as the last day), which overlaps with the August / September of the Gregorian calendar.

It is a famous festival for the Vaishnavism of Hinduism in particular. According to the Bhagavata Purana (such as Rasa-Lila of Krishna-Lila), Krishna’s dance-drama laws, devotional singing, fasting, night vigil (night Jagran) and a festival (Mahotsav) until the midnight of Shree Krishna’s birth are part of the Janmashtami celebrations.

This festival is celebrated in Mathura and Vrindavan, also with Major Vaishnava and sectarian groups found in other states of India. The festival of Nandotsav takes place after the birth of Krishna Janmashtami, a celebration of the birth of the Nanda Baba community.

Importance of Krishna Janmashtami

Shri Krishna is the son of Devaki and Vasudeva, and Hindus celebrate his birthday as Janmashtami, most notably the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition as the supreme personality of his god.

According to the Hindu tradition in Mathura, Janmashtami is celebrated when it is believed that Krishna was born, which is the midnight of the eighth day of the Bhadrapada month (which overlaps with August and September 3 in the Gregorian calendar).

Krishna was born in a confused region. It was a time when violence was rampant, denial of liberty, evil everywhere, and his life threatened by his uncle, King Kansa. Soon after his birth in Mathura, his father, Vasudeva, adopted Krishna as the father of the Yamuna and his parents in Gokul and named him Nanda and Yashoda.

This myth is held fast by the people, singing devotional songs of love towards Lord Krishna and celebrating vigil at night. The devotees break their fast by sharing food and sweets. Women draw small footprints outside the door and kitchen of their home, walking towards their home, symbolising Krishna going into their homes. 

Celebration of Krishna Janmashtami

Maharashtra janmashtami festival.

Janmashtami (popularly known as “Gokulashtami” in Maharashtra) is celebrated in cities like Mumbai, Latur, Nagpur, and Pune. Every August / September, the day after Shri Krishna’s birth, Janmashtami is celebrated as Dahi Handi. The word means “crockpot.”

The festival derives its name from the legend of Baby Krishna. He would steal and steal dairy products such as yogurt and butter, and people would hide their supplies without making it available to the baby. Krishna tries all kinds of creative ideas, like making human pyramids with his friends to break these high hanging pots.

This story is the theme of many reliefs on Hindu temples across India, and a collection of literature and dance-drama, symbolising the joyful innocence of children, the manifestation of a god in love and life. 

In Maharashtra and other western states of India, this Krishna myth is practiced as a community tradition in Janmashtami, where yogurt pots are hung high, sometimes with tall pillars or ropes hanging from the second or third floor of a building.

According to an annual tradition, groups of young men and boys known as “Govindas” roam around these hanging pots; climb over each other to form a human pyramid and then break the pot.

The girls surrounded these boys, cheering and cheering them on while dancing and singing. Spilled things are considered Prasada (ceremony offering). It is welcomed as a public spectacle, enthusiastic, and social event. 

There are youth groups from Govinda Pathaks, which compete specifically for prize money on Janmashtami day. These groups are called mandalas, and they roam around the local area, trying to break as many pots as possible every August.

Social celebrities and media attend the celebrations, and corporations sponsor part of the event. Govinda teams are offering cash and gifts, and according to the Times of India, in Mumbai alone in 2014, there were over 4,000 handicap hangings, and many Govinda teams took part. 

Gujarat and Rajasthan Janmashtami Festival

The people of Dwarka in Gujarat – who are believed to have established their kingdom – celebrate the festival with a tradition similar to that of Dahi Handi, known as Makhan handi (pot with freshly boiled butter).

Others perform folk dances, sing bhajans, and visit Krishna temples such as the Dwarkadhish Temple. In the Kutch district, farmers decorate their bullock carts and play Krishna ions, with group singing and dancing. 

The carnival-style and playful poems and writings of Dayaram, a scholar of Vaishnavism’s Puthiya Marg, became popular in Gujarat and Rajasthan. 

Celebration of Janmashtami festival in Northern India

Janmashtami is the biggest festival in the Braz region of northern India, in cities like Madura where Krishna was born, and in Vrindavan where he grew up. Janmashtami is celebrated in the northern areas of Uttar Pradesh along with the Vaishnavas and others in the state viz: Rajasthan, Delhi, Haryana, Uttarakhand, and the Himalayas. Krishna temples are decorated and lit. They attract many visitors during the day. Devotees of Krishna perform devotional ceremonies and watch the night. 

The festival usually comes as the rainy season in northern India is short, with time to play on crops and in rural areas. In the Northern states, this festival is celebrated with the tradition of Raslila, which means “ happiness, essence (rasa) of play (Lila).”

It is expressed as a solo or group dance and drama event in Janmashtami, in which Shri Krishna compositions are sung, along with a musical performance, where actors and audiences share and celebrate the play.

Shri Krishna’s childhood pranks and Radha-Krishna’s love affairs are especially famous. As per the findings of Christian Roy and other scholars, the Radha-Krishna romances are Hindu symbolism of the desire and love of the human soul, which is called Brahman for Divine Principle and Reality. 

In Jammu, a part of the celebration of Krishna Janmashtami is flying kites from the rooftops. 

Odisha and West Bengal Janamashtami Festival

The festival is also known as Sri Krishna Jayanti or Sri Jayanthi in the eastern state of Odisha, especially around Puri and in Nabadwip in West Bengal. People celebrate birth by fasting and worshiping until midnight. People recite the Bhagavata Purana from the 10th chapter, devoting it to the life of Krishna.

The day after that is called “Nanda Utsav” as Krishna’s adoptive parents Nanda and Yashoda had a joyful celebration. Upon this day, people break their fast and serve different cooked sweets after midnight. 

South India Janmashtami Festival

In Tamil Nadu, people decorate the soil with kolam (decorative pattern drawn with rice batter). Gita Govindam and other devotional songs are sung in praise of Krishna. They then draw Krishna’s footprints from the entrance of the house to the pooja room, which depicts Krishna’s entry into the home.

Bhagavad Gita recitation is also a popular technique. The offerings to Krishna include fruits and butter. The delicacies that are considered being Krishna’s favourites are carefully prepared.

The most important of them are Varkadai, Sweet Seed, and Seedai. Janmashtami is celebrated in the evening as Krishna was born at midnight. Many people practice strict fasting this day and eat only after midnight pooja. Even the toddler dressed like Krishna. 

Andhra Pradesh

In Andhra Pradesh, recitation of devotional songs and hymns serve as the hallmarks of this festival. Apart from that, another unique feature of this festival is that young children dress like Shri Krishna, and they visit their neighbours and friends.

A variety of fruits and sweets are first served to Shree Krishna, and then they are distributed to the visitors. The people of Andhra Pradesh also fast. They prepare a variety of desserts to help Gokulnandan this day.

Milk and yogurt are edible and digestible for Krishna. Some temples of the state are celebrated with joy. The number of temples dedicated to Lord Krishna is minimal. The reason is that people have taken to worship him through images, not statues. 

The famous South Indian temples dedicated to Lord Krishna are devoted to the Rajagopalaswamy Temple in Mannargudi in Thiruvarur district, Pandavapura Temple in Kanchipuram, Sri Krishna Temple in Udupi and Krishna Temple in Guruvayur in memory of Lord Vishnu. It is believed that the idol of Sri Krishna erected in Guruvayur belongs to the Dwarka and is drowned in the sea.

On this day, “Dahi Handi” games are played in various places to celebrate Krishna’s birthday. Boys get together to form human pyramids and try to break an earthen pot which is fixed at the height of about 35 ft from the ground. It is quite an exciting event with its share of nail-biting moments. Wherever a Dahi Handi takes place, lots of people gather around to cheer the participants and also enjoy the show at the same time. This scene reminds everyone of Krishna’s childhood days when he used to steal Makhan.

Story Behind Janmashtami Celebration

Lord Krishna was born to Devaki and Vasudev. At that time, Kansa was the king of Mathura. He was also the brother of Devaki. After hearing the prophecy that “the eighth child of Devaki will be the cause of Kansa’s death”, Kansa imprisoned Devaki and Vasudev. He killed off their six children as they took birth. When their eighth son Krishna was born, all the soldiers of the prison went into slumber. Vasudeva, with the help of cosmic powers, takes Krishna away from Mathura by crossing the Yamuna River. He leaves him at Nand Baba and Yashoda’s house in Vrindavan. He took the baby girl whom Yashoda gave birth to and returned to Mathura. He handed the baby girl to Kansa As usual, the evil king Kansa tried to kill the baby girl. As he took his sword, the baby girl flew away and transformed into Yogmaya. She also warned him that the boy who would kill him had taken birth. In this way, Krishna was rescued and spent his childhood in Vrindavan safely. Finally, he killed his uncle, Kansa.

Festivals bring joy and happiness in our life. There are different festivals celebrated all over the world.

Even if the festival might be only for a particular religion, the joy and happiness is spread among all. Festivals bring harmony among everyone in spite of the differences.

Every festival has its own history and story behind its celebration. They help us to know about our roots and culture. Festivals bring family and friends together. People who stay away from their families unite during the festivals.

Janmashtami is an important festival in India. This festival is celebrated even in other parts of the world. There is fun and enjoyment in celebrating this festival.

What is Janmashtami?

This festival is celebrated by the Hindus for the birth of Lord Krishna. It is also known as Gokulashtami, Krishna Janmashtami, Srikrishna Jayanti etc.

There are many incarnations of Lord Vishnu and Lord Krishna is the most powerful from all of them.

Janmashtami is celebrated on the eighth day after the full moon of Shravana according to the Hindu calendar. This is festival is famous for dahi handi and rasleela in different parts of the country.

This year Janmashtami will be celebrated on 2nd September.

History of Janmashtami

On the day when Devaki and Vasudeva got married, Kansa (Devaki’s brother) learnt that the child of his sister Devaki would kill him for his evil doings. Kansa was frustrated by this news. So, he put them in prison.

When his sister gave birth to a child, he would kill all of them whenever they were born.

But when Devaki was pregnant for the seventh time, the baby was miraculously carried to Princess Rohini in Vrindavan.

But the soldiers thought that it was a miscarriage. Kansa was happy hearing this news.

On the eighth day of Shravana, there was a heavy storm and then Devaki was pregnant with the eighth child.

At that moment Lord Vishnu came in front of them and told them to take the eighth child to Gokul and replace him with a girl child. He returned back to the prison.

The soldiers and Kansa came to know about the new child. But he did not know that Vasudeva had replaced the child. When Kansa tried to kill that child who was a baby girl, the baby slipped from his hand.

Then Goddess Durga appeared to them. She told to Kansa by trying to kill a baby girl he showed his valour. He will soon be punished by his destroyer. His destroyer was born and was safe in Gokul.

Thus, Krishna was born to destroy all the demons on the earth. He killed Kansa, the king of Mathura and brought peace and prosperity in the village.

Krishna had special powers with him which can be seen from the time of his birth itself. When he was born, all the soldiers were in deep sleep and he was kept safe by his father in spite of the heavy stormy that night.

Even after his birth, Krishna saved the people and helped them.

This made the people that he was a form of God. People have deep faith on him and are greatly devoted to him. So, they celebrate the birth of Krishna in a grand way.

The places where Krishna spent his childhood are famous for the celebration of Janmashtami.

Celebration of Janmashtami

The believers of Lord Krishna sing hymns dedicated to him. On this day, all the Krishna temples are beautifully decorated and the priests chant bhajans of Lord Krishna.

Small children dress up as baby Krishna. On this day, a small beautiful cradle is made to depict Lord Krishna.

The baby who is dressed as Krishna is bathed and dressed in a new attire. Then, the people perform puja and celebrate.

People who celebrate this festival give sweets to each other. People celebrate this festival by playing dahi handi and rasleela.

In Rasleela, people perform skit on Krishna’s life and his love for Radha. In Dahi Handi, curd is kept in a decorated pot with beautiful flowers.

This pot is hung in the middle of the compound. People hold competitions to break this pot, take the curd and win the prize for breaking the pot.

People gather from different places to take part in this competition. They form a pyramid like structure and the person who is on the top breaks the top.

Sometimes, the groups try again and again to break the hot as they keep falling in order to make a tall pyramid.

Dahi handi is inspired from Lord Krishna as he used to steal the curd and share with his friends. The festival is all about getting together and celebrating the birth of Krishna.

Importance of Janmashtami

Lord Krishna is believed to be the reincarnation of Lord Vishnu. He was sent by Lord Vishnu to save the world from the demons. His special powers can be seen when he was born.

Due to these special powers, he was taken safely from the prison to Gokul. His win over his uncle Kansa who was a demon reflects to us humans that we should always adapt to good deed and refrain from the evil doings.

The festival unites the people. We should learn from it that we must stay together always. Unity within us will help us to overcome any evil. Our life is filled with darkness.

We have jealousy, greed, anger etc within ourselves.

As Lord Krishna was born at night and all the darkness vanished, we humans believe that even from our life the darkness goes away.

Janmashtami may be celebrated in many ways by the people all over the world. But it is important to see if we are dedicated to Lord Krishna or is it just a show off.

The Birth of Krishna - Story of Krishna Janmashtami

On Krishna Janmashtami, learn the story of Krishna's birth and how he was taken away from the prison where he was born, across a flooding river and to Yashodha.

Sadhguru: Krishna as a man, the mission that he took up in his life, the frailty of being a human being living such an active life and at the same time, the divine element – all these aspects form a complex web. It is not right to see him just as this or that. He would come out as a totally distorted figure if you were looking at just one aspect of his life. He is so multi-dimensional that unless you at least touch a little bit of all of him, it would be total injustice to him.

The Place Where Krishna Was Born

Geographically, his birth took place in Mathura, in the present state of Uttar Pradesh. There was a prominent chief of the Yadava community named Ugrasena. Ugrasena was becoming old and his very ambitious son, Kamsa, who had no qualms about how to become powerful could not wait for his father to die. He imprisoned his own father and took over the leadership. He also aligned himself with an absolutely ruthless emperor from the East whose name was Jarasandha. Jarasandha’s dream was to conquer the whole known world. Through absolute brutal force, his power was growing at great pace. Kamsa aligned with him because that was the only way to get powerful at that time.

Why Kamsa Wanted To Kill Krishna

Kamsa’s sister Devaki got married to Vasudeva, another Yadava chief. Just after the wedding, when Kamsa himself was driving the newlywed couple in his chariot, an astral voice made a prophecy. This voice said from the sky, “Oh Kamsa, very happily you are driving your sister after her wedding. The eighth child born to this sister of yours will slay you. That will be your end.”

Immediately, Kamsa got violent. “Oh, her eighth child is going to come and kill me? I am going to kill her right now. Let’s see how she will have her eighth child.” He took out his sword and right there, wanted to behead his own sister. Vasudeva the groom, begged of Kamsa, “Please spare her life. How can you do this? She is your sister and we are just married. How can you just slaughter her right here?” “Her eighth child is going to kill me. I am not going to let anything like that happen.” So Vasudeva offered a pact, “I will give all our newborn children to you. You can kill them. But please spare my wife right now.”

But Kamsa, overly concerned about his life and security, kept his sister and his brother-in-law under a kind of house imprisonment so that they were constantly watched. The first child was born and the guards informed Kamsa. When he came, Devaki and Vasudeva wept and begged, “It is only the eighth child which is going to kill you. Spare this one.” Kamsa said, “I don’t want to take any chances.” He picked up the child, held him by the legs and smashed him on a rock. This continued. Every time a child was born, the parents begged Kamsa in many ways, but he wouldn’t spare a single one. Six new-born children were slaughtered like this.

How Balarama Reached Gokul

Devaki and Vasudeva were very frustrated with Kamsa’s ways. The subjects in the kingdom were very fearful of Kamsa. Over time, they also got frustrated with the absolutely cruel ways of the king, constantly at battle with someone and then, killing these children. Slowly, dissension was beginning to happen within the palace. So when the seventh child came, Vasudeva managed to smuggle it out and replace it with a stillborn child that they found elsewhere. This child was smuggled across the Yamuna River to Gokula and gave it to Rohini, another wife of Vasudeva.

The name of this child was Balarama. As he grew up, he became like a giant and there are any number of stories about his strength and the feats that he performed.

Vasudev Taking Krishna to Gokul

When the eighth child was due, Kamsa got really nervy. All these days, they had been under house arrest, but now he shackled Vasudeva and put Devaki in a proper prison. The child was born on the eighth day into the dark half of the month, and it was pouring rain and thunder. Kamsa would not allow anybody to enter the prison because something may happen. He put his trusted aide, a lady who was related to him whose name was Puthana, as a midwife. She was supposed to watch. The plan was that the moment the child is born, she would hand it over to Kamsa who would kill the child .

The labor pains came and went, came and went. Puthana waited and waited. It didn’t happen. During the night, she went out to visit her home for a few minutes and come back. But when she arrived at her home, suddenly a very heavy rain set in and the streets were flooded. In this situation, Puthana was unable to go back to the prison.

That was when the child was born and a miracle happened. The doors of the prison opened up by themselves – all the guards fell asleep – the shackles broke. Immediately, Vasudeva saw that this was a divine intervention. He picked up the child and as if by intuitive guidance, he walked to the river Yamuna. Though the whole place was flooding, he found to his surprise that the ford which crossed the river was sticking out and he could clearly walk. He walked across and went to the house of Nanda and his wife Yashodha. Yashodha had just delivered a girl child. She had had a difficult labor and was unconscious. Vasudeva replaced the girl child with Krishna, took the girl child and came back to the prison.

What Happened to Yashoda's Daughter?

Then the girl child cried. The guards went and reported to Kamsa. By then, Puthana had returned. Kamsa came and saw that it was a girl. He knew something fishy had happened, so he asked Puthana, “Are you sure? Were you here when the child was born?” Puthana, fearing for her life said, “I was here. I saw it with my own eyes. This child was born to Devaki.” To add authenticity, she said, “This child was born right here in front of my eyes.” Devaki and Vasudeva begged, “See, it is just a girl. This girl cannot kill you. If it was a boy, he would have been your slayer. But this is a girl. Spare this girl.” But Kamsa said, “No, I don’t want to take any chances.” So once again, he picked up the child by her legs and wanted to crash her on the floor. As he was about to do this, this child slipped out of his hands, flew out the window, laughed at him and said, “Your slayer is elsewhere.”

Now Kamsa really got suspicious. He interrogated everyone who was there. The guards had slept, Puthana had gone out. Nobody was willing to admit anything because all of them valued their heads. When you run situations by threat, initially you think it’s an advantage. “If you don’t do this, you’re dead” – so things will happen the way you want them. But after some time, this becomes a big problem. People know that if something doesn’t happen the way you want it, it will cost their life. So they will create a whole make-believe situation all around you. When you run things by fear, this is the consequence that you will have to face.

Meanwhile, Krishna was placed into the community of Gokula. In spite of being the son of a chief, he grew up in an ordinary cow-herding community. There are any number of miracles and adventures that happened around him during that phase of his life.
