The Firefly Lane series is a captivating coming-of-age story about two very different girls who become the best of friends.
Book one, Firefly Lane, begins in the summer of 1974 when a lonely and awkward eighth grader, Kate Mularkey, meets her new neighbor, Tully Hart.
Tully is everything Kate wishes she could be; calm, clever, and beautiful. But to Kate’s astonishment, Tully wants to be her friend.
It doesn’t take long for the girls to become inseparable, forming a close bond that will stay with them for decades.
But as they grow from girls into women, Tully is desperate to fill the void left by her mother, who abandoned her years ago. She seeks approval and validation, first from men and then from the promise of fame in New York City.
Meanwhile, Kate is still plagued by feelings of inadequacy. She knows she’ll never be glamorous and successful like Tully, but deep down, she’s ok with that. All she wants is to find a husband, start a family, and settle down in domestic bliss.
As the years roll by, their relationship is put to the test, but through it all, they remain steadfast. Until one day, a terrible betrayal tears their decades-long friendship apart at the seams.
In book two, Fly Away, Tully is devastated by losing her once inseparable best friend, Kate. She always thought she was strong and could face whatever hurdles life threw at her, but Kate’s death has rocked her to her core.
Try as she might to fulfill her promise and take care of Kate’s beloved children; Tully hasn’t the faintest idea of what family life is all about.
But then, a surprise visitor arrives; Dorothy Hart, the mother who abandoned her all those years ago.
And so, Tully and Dorothy embark on a rocky journey of forgiveness and redemption that could make or break both of them for good.

Kristin Hannah is a modern American writer famous for many bestsellers. Her novels portray people close to any reader; many of them are about women and their realistic lives, full of uneasy turns.
The would-be writer was born on September 25, 1960, in California. The girl spent her childhood in sunny beaches, surfing; extreme activities did not attract her much, but her nature was, nevertheless, adventurous.

The woman believed she had inherited that from her father – he bought a van, took his family (the wife, three kids, and a dog), and began to travel across the country. Finally, the Hannahs settled in Washington.
Kristin showed her artistic abilities early; the mother encouraged her daughter’s hobby to create stories. Unfortunately, the woman died early, and the little girl had nobody to develop her talent; Hannah entered a college to study law. The come-back to writing happened later, when she was pregnant: the urge to create was irresistible, and Kristin devoted herself to large texts.
In 1990, Kristin Hannah signed her first contract with a publishing house, and her debuting book was presented. The author did not practice her profession and spent her free time on new opuses.
She purchased a computer and began to catch up with what she had missed. It took her pretty much endeavor to prove herself as a professional, not just a mother with a whim. Finally, Kristin earned her recognition, and readers started buying her novels gladly; the Golden Heart and Maggie Awards followed. In 1996, the woman gained the National Reader’s Choice.
The success was rightful: the author’s stories were full of lyric emotions that every woman ever felt. One could see a teenage friendship in Firefly Lane (2005), the desire to have a sound family in The Things We Do for Love (2004), a broken-heart character in Home Front (2012).
What Hannah describes in her books often happens in real life; thus, the audience feels close to characters and remembers quotes. In 2015, TriStar Pictures bought the rights to the screen adaptation of the novel The Nightingale; the release is expected in 2021.
Kristin Hannah is a happy wife and mother. She married right after she had graduated from college.
The beginning of a writing career occurred when the woman was pregnant; it was a challenging time. Hannah spent much time in the bed and devoured books from her home library.

When the son Tucker was born, Hannah’s artistic ambitions kept growing. She turned out to be a diligent and fruitful author, combining both personal life and hobby. Kristin is absolutely satisfied with her life.
The writer has an Instagram account; one can see pictures from vacation, moments with friends, work-related content, and extracts from reviews on her books.
Nowadays, the writer continues to work on new stories; some books are available on the Internet free of charge.
Kristin Hannah’s net worth is $1.5 million in 2019.

Kristin has sold more than twenty novels including True Colors, the epic Firefly Lane and Winter Garden. Her work of fiction, Home Front, was optioned for film by 1492 films. “You are going to be an author” are the farsighted words she never forgot from her mother. She was in her third and final year of Law school and her mother was in the sickbay facing the end of her battle with cancer. Kristin was surprised to find out that her mother thought she would become an author. They collaborated on a tale for the next couple of months. After her mother’s death, Kristin packed up all bits and pieces of research they had composed and put them in her closet.
Kristin got married and got pregnant. By the time she conceived, she would read each book in the house and later asked her husband for the cereal boxes to read. That is when her husband reminded her of the books she had started with her mother. Kristin took them and began writing. By the time she gave birth, she had finished her first draft and was very fascinated with it. The draft was rejected, but every rejection just encouraged her to try harder.
In 1990, Kristin Hannah got a call, and in that instant, she went from a mother to a professional author. She has never looked back again. In all those years between then and now, Kristin has never lost her enthusiasm for telling stories. Moreover, she feels really blessed to be a mother, a wife, and an author. Her book, Firefly Lane, became one of the bestsellers in 2009, a touchstone work of fiction that brought many women together.
Kristin Hannah’s Fly Away is about two teenagers in the seventies- Kate and Tully Hart who were inseparable. Tully Hart, with her halter tops and make-up was a very cool girl in school. Kate on the other hand, with high water jeans and glasses, was an unknown geek. However, fate brought the two together and through the years they were committed to each other. This is an amazing story of Kate and Tully who began on a calm street known as Firefly Lane. Years later, Tully has become a woman and tries to deal with her best friend’s loss. She wants to accomplish her promise to her friend Kate and be there for her children.
However, it’s a task she has totally no idea on how to accomplish it. Kate’s daughter, Ryan, is only sixteen-year-old and is lost in her sorrow as Tully is. Kate’s daughter falls in love with a man who makes her happy and leads her into a risky, shadowy world. Dorothy Hart, Tully’s mother, is an unstable woman who deserted her child a lot of times in the past and eventually broke her heart. Tully is at a risk of losing everything she has and is more vulnerable than she has ever been. Dorothy returns again, desperate for another opportunity to be a good mother. To assist her daughter, she must face her fears and reveal the dreadful secret in her past.
With this, she can then become a mother that her wounded daughter wants. A tragedy will bring the three women together and place them on a distressing, powerful journey of recovery. Each looses her way and they all need each other, and perhaps a miracle, to transform their lives! Kristin is now a popular thriller author with many fans. Once the Nightingale thought took root, Kristin began as she always does: with research. It was really the research in all her novels, which informed the story. First, she finds out what happened, and then begins to imagine what could occur, and creates a world that makes sense to her, a fantasy world planted in truth.
In the story, her research was an overwhelming task. There was so much to be familiar with and comprehend. She started with the past set of the war in Europe and began to narrow down her focus. Kristin Hannah’s best information constantly comes from memoirs of women in the resistance, the downed airman who escaped, and the women who hid rescuing Jewish children. More and more, as Kristin read about brave women, she found herself consumed with the tale.
The Nightingale is soaring to new heights and will give her even more delighted readers. Both a thinker and a weeper, the novel tells the story of two sisters, one in Paris and the other in the countryside, during World War II. The novel is an epic love narrative and family drama. It is an intense and compelling representation of two separated sisters, living under siege and a nation at war, where occasionally surviving means doing the unimaginable.
Each is crippled by their beloved mother’s death and inconsiderate desertion of their father. Each sister plays a part in the underground and both find a way to love, forgive and forget. It is a little melodrama combining historical accuracy. Kristin Hannah’s motivation for Isabelle was the actual life story of a woman leading allied soldiers over Pyrenees. The novel is presently narrated by one of the sisters, though you actually won’t know until the end which sister it is.
The book is detailed, fast-paced, and full of romance, and is destined to be on the top of the best sellers’ lists. Kristin Hannah now lives on Bainbridge Island in Washington with her husband and son. Her next release is the well anticipated novel-The Nightingale, which is to be released on February 3, 2015-St. Martin’s Press!

My Review: ★★★★★
Best for fans of World War II historical fiction
The Nightingale is a gripping and unforgettable story of two adult sisters during World War II in France. First, in a quaint town, teacher Vianne and her daughter Sophie bid farewell to the patriarch of their family, Mauriac, as he goes off to battle.
Surprisingly, the Nazis invade France, and a Nazi soldier shelters in Vianne’s home. This puts her life at constant risk, as life’s necessities dwindle.
Meanwhile, Vianne’s sister, Isabelle, a rebel and spitfire, meets and quickly falls in love with the partisan Gaetan. But after Gaetan betrays her, she joins the underground resistance, where she also continually faces dangerous decisions.
What happens as this novel progresses will touch your heart and shock your conscience as you turn the pages.
The Nightingale is universally beloved for very good reason. I personally recommend the paper version, as I found the audio narration to be dry. However, this is an absolute must-read.
Best for fans of Vietnam-era historical fiction and Alaskan settings
The Great Alone is an Alaskan romance novel that transports the reader to 1974 for a harrowing story of resilience.
Ernt Allbright is a former Prisoner of War who returns home from the Vietnam War with PTSD. He impulsively decides to move to Alaska, where he, his wife Cora, and his teen daughter Leni will live in America’s last frontier. There, they fight for survival both literally and figuratively.
Leni befriends a local boy (her first love), and as a brutal winter approaches, these characters face a string of utterly traumatic events as dark as the Alaskan Winter itself. The results of each tragedy are both beautiful and devastating.
The Great Alone is truly the most memorable winter-themed book . It has stayed with me since I first read it years ago. I still think about the picturesque but harsh realities of Alaska, which I Googled so many times while reading it. Its riveting words, which kept me up all night turning the pages, still make it a five-star read for me.

Best for fans of feminist storylines
The Women is a Vietnam War story about the experiences of women during and afterward. It’s one of her best works to date. Readers can expect the same blend of excellent historical fiction , strong female leads, and emotionally charged events she so often gives us in her books. But, this time, it’s all just a bit more impactful.
In The Women , Hannah excels at covering just about every major issue surrounding the Vietnam War. She does this in a very realistic way, all through the eyes of Frankie, a duty-driven young American woman who follows her brother to the War by enlisting as a nurse.
There, the realities of war are more horrific than she could have imagined. She copes by entertaining a few male suitors while saving lives.
Back in America, however, not only is she not deemed a hero but she’s also discarded and mistreated as a veteran. This affects her physical, mental, and emotional health and demands a reckoning.
The reader walks away with both a comprehensive understanding of the controversial nature of this War and a profound respect for the women (and men) who served in it.
The audiobook version was an especially immersive experience, read by the beloved narrator Julia Whelan. It makes the reader feel closer to the action and Frankie’s emotions about her shocking experiences.

Best for fans of emotional, decades-long friendship stories
In Firefly Lane , it’s 1974 in the State of Washington. A nerdy teenager named Kate Mularkey meets and befriends Tully Hart, the “coolest girl in the world.” In fact, due to circumstances surrounding Tully’s family life, they become inseparable best friends.
Over the next three decades, their friendship plays out across their journalistic careers, life, love, and a lot of cultural references. Kate ultimately chooses a quiet family life, and Tully chooses a fame-filled professional life.
For thirty years, their friendship weathers jealousy, anger, hurt, and resentment. Then, an act of betrayal puts their friendship to the ultimate test of forgiveness.
It’s a heartwarming but tear-jerking, coming-of-age novel that will leave you feeling like you know the characters.
For more, read my full guide to Firefly Lane . The Netflix adaptation starring Katherine Heigl and Sarah Chalke, while different, is also very good.
Best for fans of Depression-era historical fiction and Chanel Cleeton’s novels
The Four Winds is set amidst the Great Depression when America was in crisis and millions were out of work.
Elsa Wolcott was considered too old to marry, and her future seemed bleak. Then, she met and quickly decided to marry a man.
But, when the Great Depression hit, Elsa was left alone to either fight for the land she loved or head west to California with her children, in search of a better life.
The choice comes with consequences. The land itself challenges them just as much as the state of the economy.
It’s a gripping tale of motherhood and the struggle to survive and thrive when everything is working against you.
You’ll learn about the social and political climate of the time through the eyes of unforgettable characters. You’ll also anxiously await seeing what becomes of their treacherous journey.
The audiobook is read by beloved narrator Julia Whelan, who is known for injecting emotion and suspense into her readings. I very highly recommend that format for immersing yourself in the suspense.
Best for fans of fables and holiday stories
In Comfort & Joy , protagonist Joy is recently divorced and alone. So, she boards a plane to spend the holidays in the Pacific Northwest. When an unexpected event leaves her deep into the woods, she makes a fateful decision to leave her old life behind.
She meets six-year-old Bobby, who is about to experience his first Christmas without a mother. He has closed himself off from all the world except Joy, with whom he forms a deeply powerful bond, as his father watches on.
But everything is not as it appears, and Joy is separated from her new life as quickly as she began it. Desperate to return, only the magic of Christmas may save Joy and Bobby.
It’s a fanciful, short tale that really keeps you on your toes wondering what’s “real” and what will happen next. I’ve read dozens of holiday books, and I still think this remains an excellent choice for the holiday season.
My Review: ★★★☆☆
Best for fans of emotional historical fiction like that of Chantel Cleeton
In Winter Garden , Meredith and Nina Whitson are two adult sisters at odds. While Meredith works as a stay-at-home mother and manages the family apple orchard, Nina is a world-traveled photojournalist.
When their father becomes ill, Nina returns home, where they must cope with their cold and disapproving mother.
But, when their mother begins to retell the Russian fairy tale she often told them as children, they journey into the truth surrounding her past life in war-torn Leningrad decades earlier. The sisters learn secrets so terrible that it shakes them to their cores and changes them forever.
I enjoyed this book, but I recommend the audio version, as the pacing is a bit slow. It can be listened to at higher speeds to keep the suspenseful action moving along more quickly.
Best for fans of Firefly Lane
Fly Away is the sequel to Firefly Lane , a historical fiction book series . I don’t want to say too much about it, as I would have to give away the ending of the first book.
But, I will generally note that Fly Away picks up a few years later. It primarily explores Tully’s grief and relationship with her mother, Cloud. Kate’s family also plays a big role in the novel.
While I loved returning to beloved book characters and learning more about Cloud’s background as well, Fly Away felt more like a long epilogue than a well-rounded story in its own right.
Read this one if you are a big fan of the series and the characters or if you want to see how the sequel differs from season 2 of the Firefly Lane Netflix series.

Set in France during the late 1930s to early 1940s, this powerful and atmospheric WWII story follows two French sisters as they grapple with the Nazi’s invasion of their homeland.
In a small, remote village, Vianne and her daughter are forced to live with a German captain in their home, doing what they can to survive while resources grow scarce.
Vianne’s younger sister, Isabelle, decides to risk her life by joining the Resistance in Paris – surrounded by danger at every turn.
Will the sisters ever see each other again?
This was one of the first historical fiction novels I ever read, and it completely captivated me. It opened the door to a whole new genre that I love!
A family of three (Ernt, a Vietnam veteran struggling with PTSD, his wife Cora, and their teenage daughter, Leni) moves to the outskirts of Alaska in the 1970s, completely unprepared. But the harsh winter isn’t the only thing they’re up against.
This engrossing, emotional story is about love, survival, and family, set against the backdrop of the Alaskan wilderness.
This was a solid 5-star read for me (one of my favorite books of all time), and I highly recommend it. Side note: you might want to keep a box of tissues nearby!
Publication date: February 6th, 2018
This story follows a young woman who joins the Army Nurse Corps during the Vietnam War. It shines light on the forgotten sacrifices of women during the war.
Frankie McGrath comes of age during a turbulent time for her country: the 1960s. When her brother is shipped off to war, Frankie decides to leave behind her sheltered life and enlist as a nurse.
I read this book this year (it’s a recent release) and absolutely loved it! I was so invested in the story and could not put it down – I read it in just a few days. (Just be aware, like with many of Kristin Hannah’s stories, it is quite emotional and heart-wrenching at times).
(This was also one of my picks for the best book club books to read in 2024 ! Here is a plot summary and book club questions for The Women .)
Release date: February 6th, 2024
More historical fiction by Kristin Hannah (that I haven’t read yet):
Yes! Firefly Lane – which is partially set during the 1970s – was adapted into a popular TV show on Netflix starring Katherine Heigl and Sarah Chalke. There are 2 seasons available to watch.
Additionally, there are multiple Kristin Hannah adaptations currently in the works! The Nightingale is in development, set to star sisters Dakota and Elle Fanning. There is no set release date yet.
The Great Alone is also currently in development, with the screenplay being written by Julia Cox. There is no set release date yet.
What’s your favorite Kristin Hannah novel (either historical fiction or not)? Let me know in the comments!
The women was my favorite. Previously it was the great alone.
They’re both SO good! Both are reads that have definitely stuck with me.
