TVL ICT-WORK IMMERSION LEARNING TOOL 3 GUIDELINES FOR WORK IMMERSION Work Immersion (WI) which is a required subject for the Technical-Vocational Livelihood (TVL) track aims to provide Senior High School learners with opportunities to familiarize themselves with the workplace; to simulate employment; and to apply their competencies in areas of specialization/applied subjects in authentic work environments. However, due to health crisis brought about by COVID-19, its implementation must be flexible enough to fit the complex setup and needs of learners, schools and partner institutions in the country. While limitations for learners and schools are recognized, the delivery of quality basic education will not be at stake through some innovations where students could be familiar in the actual work setting even without face to face interaction. Under the new guidelines, Technical Vocational Livelihood (TVL) track will undergo work immersion program as stipulated in DepEd Order No. 39, s. 2018 entitled Clarification and Additional Information to DepEd Order No. 30, s. 2017 (Guidelines on Work Immersion). The TVL track will be employing different learning modalities or blended learning approach with suggested activities guided by the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELCs). (see Appendix B). To strengthen the weaknesses brought about by health crisis, this learning tool is created to provide background and specific guides for learners in accomplishing forms and engage them in the real work scenarios without actual work immersion and boost their confidence to learn through home based activities. STAGES OF WORK IMMERSION PRE-IMMERSION This stage involves: A. Understanding Work Immersion by discussing (1) expected behavior in the workplace such as work ethics, safety in the workplace, workplace rights and responsibilities, confidentiality, effective conflict resolution and teamwork skills and (2) work immersion rules and regulations. B. Appreciating the importance of credentials by (1) writing a resume, (2) filling out application forms, (3) Visiting the concerned offices where the following clearance could be secured such as Barangay clearance, Police clearance, Mayor’s clearance, Medical certificate and (4) Job Interview skills training.

TVL ICT-WORK IMMERSION LEARNING TOOL 4 C. Discussing of portfolio which includes (a) portfolio instructions/content, pictures of work site and nonwritten output/ projects with captions, illustrations of activities performed (as needed), weekly diary (narrative/account of learnings and achievements, issues faced and corresponding solutions), sample written output (if any), work immersion highlights, other relevant pictures/documents, portfolio packaging and submission at the end of immersion. (b)When to update content, (c)Portfolio packaging and (d) Portfolio submission at the end of Work Immersion. IMMERSION PROPER This stage involves: A. Appreciating management processes by observing, identifying and describing the nature of business, description of the products/services, target clientele, organizational structure and company rules and regulations. B. Appreciating business processes by observing and participating in Safety/ Production/Maintenance/Quality Control/Quality Assurance/Customer Satisfaction/Housekeeping/Hygiene and others. C. Applying skills learned and proper values acquired in school. POST-IMMERSION This stage involves evaluating the work immersion experience by: A. presenting portfolio with weekly diary entries; B. comparing and contrasting school and work application of skill, knowledge and attitudes; C. writing an updated resume; and D. reflecting on Work Immersion experiences. The stages of Work Immersion mentioned above are the standards built in the TVL Track. However, some modifications are applied in this learning tool to provide clear background and specific guides for learners in accomplishing forms and performing Work Immersion tasks through home-based activities as stipulated in the new guidelines under Memorandum DM-CI-2020-00085 (Guidelines for Work Immersion Implementation during Crisis Situation) .

Understanding Work Immersion Activity 1 Directions: In 5-10 sentences, write an essay on how to conduct oneself inside the company/business establishment/working environment during the Immersion period. TVL ICT-WORK IMMERSION LEARNING TOOL 6 Scoring Rubric for Essay CRITERIA EXEMPLARY ACCOMPLISHED DEVELOPING BEGINNING PERCENTAGE SCORE Form & Content (40%) Essay is clear and concise answering all the guided question given. (40%) Essay is clear and somewhat concise answering all the guided question given. (30%) Essay is clear and somewhat concise answering some of the guided question given. (20%) Essay is not clear nor concise answering few of the guided question given. (10%) Effectivene ss (40%) Essay shows a very professional appearance, tone and style. (40%) Essay shows an appropriate appearance, tone, and style. Some inconsistencies remain. (30%) Essay shows a less professional appearance, tone, and style. Several weaknesses need attention or revision (20%) Essay does not have a professional appearance, tone, and style. Much revision is needed. (10%) Grammar & Mechanics (20%) Writer follows all guidelines for spelling grammar, usage, mechanics, etc. Sentences are strong and have a varied structure. (20%) Writer follows most guidelines, but some sentences are unclear, uneven, or contain errors. (15%) Writer follows some guidelines, but some sentences contain multiple errors and are difficult to understand. (10%) Writer has difficulty following guideline; most sentences contain numerous errors and cannot be understood. (5%) TOTAL PERCENTAGE SCORE/100

TVL ICT-WORK IMMERSION LEARNING TOOL 7 B. Writing a Cover or Application Letter. This letter is a document that will help you introduce yourself and your purpose in applying in the most presentable way before the work immersion. This includes several parts such as contact information, address, the body of the letter, appropriate closing and a signature. Tips in Writing a Cover letter 1. Introduce yourself. 2. Mention the job or (kind of job) you’re applying for. 3. Mention your knowledge and skills that match the skills needed to do the job. 4. Encourage the reader to read your resume for further information. Guidelines in Writing a Letter For the Heading 1. The first section or header includes your contact information: address, telephone or cell phone number, and your email address. For the Inside Address 2. Include the complete name of the person who will receive your letter and résumé. It could be the owner or the hiring officer; his/her position/designation; and the name and address of the company/institution. For the Salutation 3. Getting a name to address your letter to is important. Do your research to avoid the use of generic "To Whom It May Concern" or "Dear Sir or Madam," which can make things look like you did not make an effort to learn more about the job or the employer. For the Body of the Letter 4. Introduce yourself and the course/strand that you are taking. 5. State the intention of your letter. In your case,let the institution/company know that you are applying for an internship/trainee/immersion position. 6. Mention the purpose of your immersion. You can include a brief rationale or background of the subject/work immersion as part of the curriculum.

Include the relevant knowledge, skills, and work values that you can offer to the company/institution, if they will allow you to enter their company/ institution. 8. Express excitement. Convey your passion for work and learning; and your excitement about the internship/immersion and company. 9. Suggest next steps showing eagerness for a meeting or suggesting a call. For the Closing 10. End your letter with a formal closing like "Sincerely" or "Yours truly."

It is usually accompanied by a customized cover letter in which the applicant expresses an interest in a specific job. It has several parts such as Heading, Objective, Educational Background, Work Experiences, Skills, Seminars/Trainings Attended, Personal Information and Character References. Parts of a Resumé Heading: This is the first part of a resumé which includes the contact information of the applicant. It is generally at the top or on the upper left side of the page. The contact information should list a person’s full name on the top line. The following lines should include the permanent address and cellular phone number or landline. Also, include the email address (preferably use your name) and 2 x 2 picture with white background (preferably in scanned format and in corporate attire). You may choose to eliminate the word RESUMÉ at the top of the page as that is the style preferred today. Objective: This is one of the most important parts of a resumé. It appears on the top of the resumé after the heading. It briefly presents to the prospective employer the exact position you seek to apply. It should include a clear definition of the job title and mention the skills that would be utilized in this position. Limit the objective to one or two sentences only. A well-stated objective will greatly enhance the document and may leave a good impression to the potential employer. Leveraging gamification in ict education: examining gender differences and learning outcomes in programming courses.

1. Introduction

1.1. research questions.

1.2. Document Structure

2. literature review, 2.1. gamification.

  • Scores: This is one of the most common elements in gamification. They involve rewarding user points for performing specific desired actions in a gamified system [ 28 ]. Studies utilizing scores demonstrate positive effects, as seen in [ 29 ], where implementation of a scoring system in a programming course increased student motivation and engagement with learning. Furthermore, the obtained score correlated with academic performance. In the study by [ 30 ], it is noted that scores generate a positive feedback loop by providing users with instant information about their performance. This reinforces desired behavior in the learning process. However, placing too much emphasis on scores may foster unhealthy student competition. Focusing on skill mastery rather than score accumulation is recommended [ 31 ].
  • Leaderboards: These correspond to ranking boards that publicly display a sorted list of participants based on their performance in a specific activity. In learning, leaderboards allow students to see how they compare to their peers in academic tasks. Studies have shown that leaderboards can positively affect student motivation and engagement. For instance, in [ 7 ], a leaderboard was implemented in a university programming course, and it was found that students performed 28% more voluntary tasks when a leaderboard was visible. Students reported that it motivated them to track and compare their progress. In the case of [ 32 ], a study with computer science students demonstrated that leaderboards stimulated healthy competition among peers and helped improve participation in programming tasks. Additionally, [ 31 ] implemented leaderboards and observed increased student motivation, satisfaction, and commitment. However, some studies warn about the potential adverse effects of excessive competition promoted by leaderboards, such as anxiety and reduced collaboration among students. A systematic review by [ 33 ] identified a performance loss as the most common adverse effect, with leaderboards being the most cited game design element associated with adverse effects. Therefore, it is essential to implement leaderboards carefully, balancing them and aligning them with pedagogical objectives. In our case, the leaderboard is automatically constructed based on the cumulative scores of students.

2.2. Use of Gamification in Education

  • LO1: Students recognize the technical terminology of the Java language to program algorithmic solutions to fundamental mathematical problems.
  • LO2: Students understand using control and iterative structures in Java to program algorithmic solutions to fundamental business problems.
  • LO3: Students integrate one-dimensional arrays into algorithmic solutions in Java to provide solutions to fundamental business problems.

3.3. Process

  • At moment 1, the material associated with the content is available in Moodle five days before moment 2.
  • At moment 2, a face-to-face session is held to provide an introductory overview of the content available and resolve students’ conceptual doubts. At this moment, the content is not explained, nor are the students taught the content related to the study. All students (experimental and control groups) participated in this activity, including those who later decided not to continue studying.
  • At moment 3, a pre-test is administered to both groups, with 21 questions divided into seven for each learning objective. The test applied was the same for the entire sample of students; the time available to answer the test was 30 min. In addition, an acceptance test based on TAM (Technology Acceptance Model) is taken.
  • At moment 4, students must generate a list of questions and answers to be applied in a “Rosco” (wheel) format. The students develop these questions collaboratively in an autonomous flipped class modality. The teacher later consolidates and reviews this list. The teacher corrects the questions, which become part of the question bank for the gamified activity.
  • At moment 5, the students are divided into experimental and control groups, and use the tool according to their assigned group; the time allotted for this stage is fourteen days, during which students can freely access the activity according to their frequency and schedule.
  • At moment 6, a test is conducted again with the same number of questions, assigned time, and difficulty as the initial test. In addition, an acceptance test based on TAM is taken.

3.4. Instruments

3.5. Software Tool

  • Word wheel: The objective is for the student to provide answers related to specific vocabulary associated with a letter of the alphabet, for example: “Begins with the letter C and corresponds to a procedure to transform a primitive variable from one type to another”. The wheel is completed as the student answers the questions.
  • Matching columns: In this case, definitions or questions are matched with their respective solution or answers. For example: “Java reserved word that allows declaring an integer number value” is compared with “int”.
  • Tests: This is the most conventional activity used, but it allowed us greater versatility in questions, such as detecting code errors and definition of calculations, among other benefits. The questions and four correct alternative answers were posed, from which the student had to select one. An example question was: “What is the correct way to determine the VAT (Value Added Tax) calculation?”; the alternatives presented were “(a) int vat = sales * 0.19; (b) int vat = sales * 0.19; (c) double vat = sales * 0.19; (d) double vat = (int) sales * 0.19”.
