Women in my life have inspired this film: Naveen Vijay Krishna on The Soul of Satya

Women in my life have inspired this film: Naveen Vijay Krishna on The Soul of Satya

Actor Naveen Vijay Krishna, who played lead roles in Telugu films like  Nandini Nursing Home  (2016) and  Oorantha Anukuntunnaru  (2019), has turned director with the recent musical short film,  Satya .  The Soul of Satya , a song from the short, was released on Independence Day.

The six-minute-long song features a happily married couple played by Sai Dharam Tej and Swathi Reddy. When Sai leaves the city for his work, we see Swathi going through her pregnancy alone. Parallely, the story moves to Sai, a soldier posted in Kupwara who is safeguarding people during Operation Rakshak. The story traverses through the eyes of Swathi.

Explaining the inspiration behind  The Soul of Satya , composed by popular playback singer Sruthi Ranjani, director Naveen Vijay Krishna says, "I have been instilled with patriotism ever since my childhood. My father always told me to not take my freedom for granted. I also grew up watching Shankar’s  Indian . Every time I watched it, I used to cry. It served as a huge inspiration for me.”

The opportunity to direct the short film came his way when Dil Raju Productions asked Naveen to make a music video from the perspective of a soldier’s wife. “It was during the research that I discovered stories of several veer naris who had joined the army after their husbands were martyred in war," says the actor-filmmaker, who shares that understanding the point of view of the women in his family helped him shape the story better.

Incidentally, Sai Dharam Tej was a good friend of Naveen, and yet, he wasn't the first choice for the video. “He heard the idea and wanted to do it. I told him that his fans would have a problem with him being a side hero, but he trusted me and my direction and came on board,” he says. Swathi and Naveen worked together on  Danger  (2005). “I have always admired her confidence and natural acting. In fact, after  Subramaniapuram , I became her fan.”

The Soul of Satya  is part of a 23-minute short that is expected to be released after making the rounds in the festival circuit. Naveen credits his writers for carrying the essence of the song in Tamil and Hindi as well. While Vivek Ravi leads the writing in Tamil, Kadali and Ritesh G Rao worked on it in Telugu and Hindi, respectively.

After tasting success with the mystical thriller Virupaksha and sharing screenspace with Pawan Kalyan in Bro, Sai Dharam will be seen in a musical short titled Satya. The latter will be launched commemorating Independence Day, where he’ll be sharing screenspace alongside (Colors) Swathi Reddy. The teaser of the short was unveiled earlier this week.

The biggest surprise element for Satya is its director - Nawin Vijaya Krishna, son of veteran actor Naresh. Nawin had earlier made a mark as an actor in films like Nandini Nursing Home, Oorantha Anukuntunnaru; Satya is his first tryst with direction. Balagam producers Harshith Reddy and Hanshitha Reddy bankrolled this short under Dil Raju Productions.

The Soul of Satya takes off with a marriage sequence of Sai Dharam Tej and Swathi Reddy where they lock themselves in an embrace. Meher Kilaru, the CEO of Dil Raju Productions, has already stated that Satya is by far the best performance of Sai Dharam Tej and claims the director Nawin will be a true value addition to the Telugu film industry.

Popular singer Sruthi Ranjani is turning a music director for the short film, whose background score is composed by budding musician Saketh Komanduri. Balaji, who worked on the chartbuster music video Enjoy Enjaami and several other Youtube videos, forays into the Telugu market as a cinematographer. The makers say Satya is as emotional as Balagam.

Sai Dharam Tej is cast as a soldier in Satya and will depict the sacrifices that his wife needs to make for the country. The team is leaving no stone unturned to spread the word about the video. It’ll be interesting to see what Sai Dharam Tej and Swathi have to offer in their first on-screen appearance together. Swathi’s next release is Naveen Chandra’s Month of Madhu.

'The Soul Of Satya' Video: An Emotional Tribute To Our Warriors!

The Soul Of Satya Video: An Emotional Tribute To Our Warriors!

We treat our soldiers as heroes and everyone who serves the Indian Army deserves the respect. But there are many unsung heroes that we don't think off and they are the reason why the Indian Army does what it does. They are the brave warriors of this nation who sacrifice everything for the nation and often go unheard.

There is a family behind every Indian soldier. Every mother, sister and wife of an army man are the pillars of support and strength and they deserve to be celebrated. 'Soul Of Satya' is a soul-stirring tribute to all the great women who not only raised great warriors to love and fight for their country but also sacrificed their own love for the nation.

The video explores the life of 'Satya' played by Swathi Reddy. We get to understand her mindset in the beginning and what turmoil she goes through when she gets married to an army man. Played by Sai Dharam Tej, his caring and affection makes Satya fall in love within a short time. They grow very close and it showcases how Satya waits for him at home while he is serving the nation. She goes through the pains of pregnancy and fights her own battles while her husband is fighting at the born. The video showcases the strength and valor of every woman in an army family.

Shruti Ranjani composed the song which is quite emotional while Naveen Vijay Krishna directed this video. Balaji Subramanyam is the director of photography while Kadali wrote the dialogues. Ram Charan released the song and said, “Love' sacrifice, a hero's journey bestowed. Her silent strength, a nation's ode.” He congratulated the team for this wonderful tribute to the nation.

35 Movie Review

the soul of satya movie review

2 hrs 25 mins   |   Drama   |   6-9-2024

Cast - Nivetha Thomas, Vishwadev, Priyadarshi, Master Arun, Master Abhay, Krishna Teja, Gauthami, Bhagyaraj

Director - Nanda Kishore Emani

Producer - Vishwadev, Siddharth Rallapalli, Srujan Yarabolu

Banner - Waltair Productions, Suresh Productions, S Originals

Music - Music - Vivek

Initially scheduled to release on August 15, 35 finally hits the theatres on September 6. Actor-turned-producer Vishwadev Rachakonda, who had recently produced indie films Pareshaan and Double Engine, has co-produced 35 along with Siddharth Rallapalli and Srujan Yarabolu of S Originals. Rana Daggubati is also presenting 35 under the Suresh Productions banner. The film offers to be a wholesome family experience with a focus on children & their lived realities with school education.

What is it about?

Prasad (Vishwadev) and Saraswathi (Nivetha) are parents to young boys Arun and Varun. They are a middle-class brahmin family based in Tirupati. Prasad is a bus-conductor by profession and is the family’s sole breadwinner. Saraswathi had only studied till tenth grade. Their older son Arun has a lot of questions about numbers and math, which nobody seems to understand, so he never studies the subject well. After continuously getting promoted, despite failing classes 1-5, he gets held back for an extra year in class six. Maths teacher Chanakya (Priyadarshi) makes things a lot worse by taunting Arun and separating him from his best friend and the rest of his classmates. Will Arun ever manage to pass math and clear class six? Will he ever get the answers to his doubts? Will he earn the respect of his peers? These conflicts form the heart of 35.

Performances

Nivetha Thomas is the heart and soul of 35. Her beautiful performance carries the film from strength to strength. Vishwadev complements her with a more restrained performance, one that reminds us all of our own fathers & their decisions. Similarly, Priyadarshi plays this tyrant of a math teacher who is equally caricaturish and relatable. It is a role with a limited scope on paper but Priyadarshi gives it more depth.

Krishna Teja plays Nivetha’s brother with an assured touch. Senior actors Bhagyaraj and Gauthami provide a comforting presence to the ensemble of actors. The child actors have all performed well, without overdoing or underplaying any of their emotions onscreen.

Technicalities

35 has some great cinematography on display by Niketh Bommi, which makes the film look extremely aesthetic and pleasing to the eye. The lighting in this film is more nuanced and three-dimensional than the lighting we otherwise see in Telugu films.

The makers of the film took great pains to shoot in authentic locations in and around Tirupati, which adds layers of realism and meaning to the world of 35. Even the house the family lives in is as authentic as it gets.

Vivek Sagar delivers a simple, sweet and heartfelt background score in the film. The makers of 35 took a risky decision by opting for sync sound. While it adds on to the film’s overall authenticity quotient, it also makes it difficult for us to listen to the dialogues sometimes as the lines get drowned away in the background score or the ambient noise.

Nivetha Thomas Lead Actors Performance Emotions

Thumbs Down

Slow at parts

35 is a painstakingly crafted labour of love. There is something in it for everyone, from children to parents to old people. Even though this film might initially look like something that may not appeal the “youth audience” at first, the youth audience will actually relate to this so much because it speaks about their school life, which is a thing of their recent past. The parents in the film, at some point or the other, will remind us of our parents. You know a film has good writing when even the smaller characters etch their impact in your mind long after the end credits have rolled.

The movie tries to craft subtle-but-effective mass moments from the scenes involving the children interacting with each other. The parts of 35 where Arjun is trying to make life difficult for Chanakya Varma are equally hilarious and entertaining.

One of the film’s biggest strengths can be explained through its signature catchphrase “chinna katha kaadhu” itself. Even though one may think 35 is about small, everyday problems — it reasserts the fact that in our lives, it is the so-called, “small” problems that create the proverbial storm in a teacup. So really, there is no such thing as a “chinna katha kadhu”, as any story — big or small — has the potential to touch our hearts and change our lives.

At a time when many big films ignore to display due diligence to the screenplay or the technical departments, it is reassuring to see a “small” film leave no stone unturned to craft a quality product. And more power to Rana Daggubati & Suresh Productions for always putting their might behind fresh talent and clutter breaking narratives. Be it Pellichoopulu, Ee Nagaraniki Emaindi, last year’s Pareshan and now 35, they have always supported and promoted good, new-age storytelling.

If there is any problem with 35, it is that the issue the film seeks to address — a negligent, unimaginative education system that ignores critical thinking — could have been integrated with the narrative in a more seamless manner. The problems Arun has with math often seem less like the problems a 11-year-old would actually have and more like the problems a grown-up thinks a 11-year-old would supposedly vocalise it like. Apart from this one small hiccup, 35 is a smooth debut by director Nanda Kishore Emani, that lies in the sweet zone of Bollywood movies like Taare Zameen Par and Nil Battey Sannata, with a touch of K Viswanath. Though 35 is not comes under entertainer or commercial jonour, but surely it’s worth a watch for the attempt.

Bottomline – Clean & Good!

Rating: 3/5

“I have global entry!”

Now, does that sound like a funny line? Of course it doesn’t. Whatever in the history of mankind and airport lines could be funny about global entry?

But put it in the mouth of comedy goddess Catherine O’Hara, and place it in the singularly inventive world of Tim Burton and that wacky afterlife waiting room from “Beetlejuice,” and it may become the one blessed time in your life you’ll ever guffaw about global entry.

It likely won’t be the only thing you’ll guffaw about. Burton is back — and, more significantly, he is BACK — with “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice ,” 36 years after the original. And for once, the question “Why a sequel?” is moot.

Not because we know the answer. (Do we?) But, who cares? It’s funny. It may even make you feel better about, well, death, though not “death death.” And Michael Keaton somehow looks exactly the same as he did in 1988 (to be fair, it helps that his character was already dead.)

Returning to his tale of Keaton’s ghostly, fiendish “bio-exorcist,” director Burton brings back much of the team behind the original, including, alongside O’Hara and Keaton, the still-lovely Winona Ryder as Lydia the Goth Girl (also, Bob the shrunken-head guy).

Image

And we’ve gained Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, Willem Dafoe, and for the younger generation, Jenna Ortega, who, as a relatively normal figure, serves as an appealing anchor, her story moving the plot along.

Speaking of plot: if you didn’t see the original, not to worry. It all gets explained (as much as it should be ) in time. We begin in Winter River, Connecticut, still home to Lydia Deetz (Ryder), who came as a teenager with batty stepmom Delia and dad Charles, only to learn her new house was haunted by the recently deceased Adam and Barbara (Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis, alas not back).

Image

Lydia looks much the same — dressed all in black, with spiky bangs and pale skin — but is now a widowed mother, a psychic mediator, and host of a cheesy reality show, “Ghost House,” in which she sees ghosts and asks, “Can the living and the dead co-exist?”

But one day she sees something in the audience that scares her: visions of Beetlejuice, who wrought havoc when she was a teen and who, when we last left him, was wasting away in the afterlife waiting room (apparently, HE did not have global entry.)

Waiting just off set to comfort Lydia after this terrifying vision is her manager and boyfriend, Rory (Theroux), who has a little ponytail almost as smarmy as himself.

Image

Lydia then gets a concerning message from Delia (O’Hara), an artist of questionable talent and unquestionable ego, who’s mounting a gallery show in which she herself is the canvas. There, Delia tells Lydia that she’s lost Charles. “Is he divorcing you?” gasps Lydia. “What a horrible thought!” replies Delia. “No, he’s dead.” (Such lines are catnip for O’Hara, a genius of comic timing).

Lydia calls her daughter, Astrid (Ortega), at boarding school. Astrid lists Lydia in her contacts as “Alleged Mom,” which tells you much of what you need to know about their fraught relationship.

But let’s pause this account of the living, because we also have to catch you up on the dead. Down where Beetlejuice is stuck, where the dead live — but not the “dead dead” —- Delores, Beetlejuice’s ex-wife, has escaped from the crates (emphasis on plural) in which her body has resided. Watching the glamorous Bellucci literally staple herself together is just one of the glorious creative moments Burton and crew give us here. Alas, Delores doesn’t have much else to do, but this is rather spectacular.

Image

Michael Keaton in a scene from “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.” (Parisa Taghizadeh/Warner Bros. Pictures via AP)

We’re approaching spoiler territory, so let’s just say that things really get complicated when Astrid goes home to Winter River for her father’s funeral. There, she watches as Mom accepts a marriage proposal from smarmy Rory. Racing off to escape, Astrid runs into a cute young guy reading Dostoyevsky.

A relationship begins, one that will lead to unexpected mayhem. Let’s just say Lydia will need to call upon — gasp! — Beetlejuice, who will exact a fearsome price for his services, as he is wont to do.

And he appears none too soon. Keaton, in his white caked makeup and blackened eyes and hair that looks like he is perpetually sticking his hand into a plug in the wall, slips remarkably smoothly into his old role. “The juice is loose,” as he likes to say.

But you know who’s also got the juice flowing? Burton. It’s his inimitable energy that infuses this movie — a joyously rendered sequel that sometimes makes sense, and sometimes doesn’t, but just keeps rollicking. Among the ridiculous delights along the way: A “soul train” in the afterlife, which is not only literally a train of souls, but a replica of the variety show “Soul Train,” with people in Afros dancing their way to wherever they are going.

And if we don’t have the lip-synced “Day-O (The Banana Boat Song)” from the original, we do have a lip-synced “MacArthur Park,” the Donna Summer version. “Someone left the cake out in the rain,” go the ridiculous words of the disco classic. “I don’t think that I can take it, ’cause it took so long to bake it, and I’ll never have that recipe again.”

In the Burtonian spirit, let’s just say it took a long time to bake it, yes, but the director has recovered the recipe — at least enough to make us smile, chortle, even guffaw, for 104 minutes. And we can be happy with that.

“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” a Warner Bros. Pictures release, has been rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association “for violent content, macabre and bloody images, strong language, some suggestive material and brief drug use.” Running time: 104 minutes. Three stars out of four.

Jenna Ortega is now a household name in the horror genre, known for her roles in Ti West ’s X, Wednesday Addams in Netflix’s Wednesday , and most recently, Astrid Deetz in Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice . It’s hard to remember that when she took on the role of Tara Carpenter in the 2022 reboot of Scream , she was relatively unknown. In fact, most of the marketing material implied she wouldn't even survive the opening credits. However, Ortega ended up giving us the best cold open since Drew Barrymore as Casey Becker in the 1996 original, and Jada Pinkett-Smith dying in the theater at the start of Scream 2 . The scene pays homage to Barrymore's iconic opening kill that started it all but gave Tara a completely different personality that allowed the scene to feel modern and inventive. Yet, it still retains the tension and gore that proved that 2022’s Scream would live up to the standard of the iconic franchise.

2022’s ‘Scream’ Utilized a Different Angle of Self-Awareness

The Scream franchise is known for its meta-humor and light-hearted critique of horror tropes . However, since the original, the horror genre has developed hugely and the cold open of the 2022 requel acknowledges this. The scene has the self-aware essence of the franchise but with a modern lens , almost self-deprecating towards the original through the conversation about the in-movie franchise "Stab." Ortega’s sarcastic tone when describing the first "Stab" movie as "super 90s" and explaining how she prefers elevated horror that is more than "wall-to-wall" jump scares is the franchise growing and offering new criticisms on how the genre has evolved. Tara even name-drops The Babadook , The Witch , and Hereditary .

The meta-commentary also toys with the audience's expectations when Tara explains that she dislikes how formulaic the "Stab" movies have become; you have to remember in the in-movie timeline, they are on "Stab 8!" She notes that "they always start with a kill scene," paralleling the audience expectations and marketing indication that Ortega would die in the cold open. The reveal of her survival is a subversion of Scream ’s own self-confessed tropes .

Jenna Ortega Contrasts Drew Barrymore - And That’s Why It Works!

Tara’s knowledge and appreciation for the horror genre make her feel totally different from Drew Barrymore's Casey in the original. Ortega’s acting transcends simple terror, she shows genuine agony at the thought of her friend being hurt . Yet she doesn’t feel helpless, despite her fear she is strong-willed and talks back to the killer. It is her fierce loyalty that causes her to open the door to Ghostface — she immediately shows she does not hide away. Throughout the opening sequence, her terror feels raw and palpable. Tara confronts death and is completely broken by the scene’s climax; to have her survive and carry this trauma through the movie is a refreshing and surprising angle for the reboot. Unlike Casey Becker, who was only a school acquaintance to the main characters of the original Scream , Tara’s attack feels personal for everyone — especially her sister, Sam ( Melissa Barrera ), the movie’s protagonist.

'Beetlejuice Beetlejuice' Review: Jenna Ortega Leads Tim Burton's Fun Throwback

Tim Burton's latest is a return to form.

The scene is also extremely brutal with Tara having her ankle broken by Ghostface and being stabbed through the hand. It proved the new Scream would be unforgiving and relentless. The most interesting development was the growth in technology from the iconic clunky landline from the original. Although Ghostface still rings Tara on her home phone, it is interspersed with texting and video calls. The footage of Amber ( Mikey Madison ) coupled with the texts coming through whilst Ghostface is talking is a subtle nod to the two killers as well as leading audiences away from Amber being a killer. It is even more of a gut punch to see Tara betrayed by the friend she was so fearlessly protecting. However, the most effective use of new technology is the hands-free remote door locks which Ghostface manages to hack into. The unlocking and locking of the doors create a real sense of hopelessness.

The original opening of Scream is iconic for a reason, and the 2022 reboot doesn’t just try to simply recreate it. Instead, it is a modern reimagining; the visceral gut stab and the victim being dragged across the floor call back to 1996 alongside Tara being quizzed about "Stab." Yet, it doesn’t feel cheap, or simply fan-service. It plays into the self-awareness of Scream and proved that it was a worthy successor to the iconic 1996 original.
