Primary Research

Our primary research often begins with a review or audit of a company and its products as well as interviews with key executives, key members of the sales staff, and others with an ear to the market. A second source of information is typically market experts in the relevant field of study who are familiar with the company or organization and its competitive products and can provide insight into the current market and where it is trending. A third source of information, and usually the most important, is current, former, and prospective customers who can provide informed opinions about the questions being posed by this research.

Depending on the purpose of the research, our primary research methods may include:

  • In-depth interviews
  • Focus groups
  • Large-scale quantitative surveys

In-depth Interviews. We have found in our years of conducting market research that in-depth conversations held by experienced researchers with a relatively small number of practitioners can yield extremely useful information to inform more quantitative research that may be needed to confirm results with larger numbers of customers and prospects. Our researchers are highly skilled in conducting these interviews, which can last up to an hour. The interviews become conversations, during which time deep, nuanced patterns usually emerge. During a conversation like this, the interviewee comes to trust the interviewer and is inclined to express what he or she actually thinks about the topic under investigation.

Focus Groups. Focus groups are generally used to get the personal, in-depth opinions and interactions of a small group of targeted prospects. Because it is expensive to conduct focus groups in different regions of the country, we often try to organize groups around meetings or conferences where prospects from all over the country are already attending.

Our professional moderators are trained on how to elicit information without skewing the results and on how to control the group and not have one or two people dominate the discussion. They also have no “stake” in the outcome so they can as objective as the need to be to ensure valid results.

We have also been quite successful in getting the personal, in-depth opinions of a small group of targeted participants through virtual focus groups. This service avoids one of the limitations of traditional focus groups – – the small sample of people from a limited number of geographic areas. Virtual focus groups allow for a more representative sample and eliminate the need to travel.

Large-Scale Surveys. Our large-scale survey work is done in conjunction with ConsumerQuest, a leading market research firm based in California. Depending on the project objectives, budget, and schedule, we recommend one or more of the following methods:

Telephone Surveys. This methodology is ideally suited for interviewing large numbers of target respondents relatively quickly. We can also use telephone surveys after qualitative research (i.e., focus groups) to obtain larger scale quantitative data, to obtain needed information quickly, or to fine-tune an online survey to make sure the respondents understand all of the questions.

Online Surveys. This methodology is most successful when the web site is advertised to the targeted respondents by a personalized invitation (usually email). Email surveys can also be combined and used in conjunction with telephone surveys, while featuring the following benefits:

  • Very fast response times
  • Ability to capture open and closed-ended responses
  • Accessibility 24 x 7

Secondary Research

We perform field research and analysis, leveraging our large network of industry connections, pre-existing research reports, and relevant web sites and other sources, to gain intelligence for our clients on issues such as:

  • Product positioning, sales potential, and competitive pricing
  • Distribution channels 
  • Past performance of the company and demand-side perceptions
  • Customer satisfaction levels and key areas of customer need
  • Customer interest in new products and features
  • Competitive threats

Data Analysis

Data is not information. Research is much more than just collecting vast amounts of data. While experts continue to define classroom success differently, the majority of experts understand that school efficacy research, or evidence-based research, must be at the forefront of educational success because it means that only the programs that work are used in schools.

Start By Defining the Goals

Virtually no one argues that to improve outcomes, goals must be determined before specific strategies are decided on. State standards provide basic guidelines, but nuances must still be decided at local levels to meet student learning needs.

Using Data to Evaluate Outcomes

Educators are well aware of how important data is when districts are looking for ways to improve teaching strategies. In fact, many districts are drowning in data that’s not truly benefiting educators or students as it hasn’t yet been compiled in a way that’s useful. Efficacy or evidence-based research is commonly touted as being the key to unlocking the secrets all that data holds.

Obtaining the Best Data Isn’t Always Easy

In some cases, the validity of data is open to question because of its source or the methodology used during compilation. Organizations compiling the data may have their own objectives (i.e., to prove a product works), in which case a specific district’s objectives may not be met. If the ultimate goal is to achieve the best student outcomes, all data must be gathered and analyzed by an objective third-party. Focusing on student needs rather than vendor needs will lead to the best long-term outcomes.

Being Flexible Enhances Outcomes

No curriculum plan is perfect, and educators must be able to recognize when something isn’t working and needs to be changed. That isn’t to suggest the long-term objectives must be modified, but rather that the means to achieving those goals much be evaluated. Efficacy or evidence-based research will help educations make key teaching decisions when the data is relevant and accurate.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The roughly quarter-mile route between Hammond Building — the home base of the Penn State College of Engineering for 70 years — and the newly constructed Engineering Collaborative Research and Education (ECoRE) Building has been walked so many times by Craig Dubler, he wouldn’t be surprised to see faint rutted tracks already appearing under his feet in the freshly lain concrete. 

He focuses on the destination, though, appreciating the hard work of hundreds while gazing upon the gleaming, triple-pane glass panels of the ECoRE atrium, the new face on the block of engineering buildings at Penn State University Park.  

“We’ve constructed a legacy building,” said Dubler, the director of facilities for the College of Engineering, describing the ECoRE Building’s place in the college’s decade-long master plan to upgrade facilities and better share resources across campus. The plan created a new center of gravity for engineering-related activity and collaboration at Penn State on the west side of the University Park campus. Sitting across a grassy quad from the one-year old Engineering Design and Innovation Building , ECoRE and its assortment of research and teaching spaces, including nine general-purpose classrooms, flight simulators, wind tunnels, flumes and 3D projection systems, is its epicenter. The Board of Trustees approved final plans and construction of the building in 2021. 

“It’s a showpiece, not just for what we engineer but how we work: collaboratively,” Dubler explained. ECoRE made neighbors of a former archipelago of academic departments, including aerospace engineering, architectural engineering, civil and environmental engineering and acoustics, bringing them closer to a host of other engineering-related departments already on West Campus. The building also houses the Engineering Library , and soon, the Center for Engineering Outreach and Inclusion and the Engineering Advising Center will move into it, too. 

Dubler said he envisions a scenario where a civil engineer could enjoy a cup of coffee in the first-floor Knowledge Commons with an aerospace engineer and discuss anything from concrete to contrails as they find common ground, or air, in their work. 

“I can’t wait to see what amazing things happen between these departments and others working together,” Dubler said. “The process of collaboration is on full display.” 

The hidden gears of progress 

Less visible to the public was the Herculean effort by many behind the shining façade to construct the 290,000 gross-square-foot facility, long before minds and machines began moving in and classes started being taught — although the exterior work was captured via livestream.  

“It’s important to acknowledge the contributions of many individuals and teams who’ve worked across the past few years to make ECoRE a reality,” said Tonya L. Peeples, the Harold and Inge Marcus Dean of Engineering. “It promises to usher in an exciting next chapter for the College of Engineering as a dynamic home for teaching, learning, research, innovation and inspiration.” 

The engineering facilities team worked closely with a variety of stakeholders, including the Penn State Office of the Physical Plant (OPP) — the “eyes and ears” on the project for Penn State, according to Dubler — the Whiting-Turner Contracting Company, the architecture firm Payette and more. 

“The sheer scale of the building, coupled with the physical and mental endurance required for several years, has made this a career-defining experience for many, including the seasoned professionals,” said Brian Hayes, OPP facilities project manager for design and construction. “The end result is a testament not just to collaboration, but also to the spirit of cooperation that was critical for this project.” 

The team of professionals constructed what Dubler called “a beautiful and efficient world-class facility.” A few of his favorite architectural features include the glass curtain wall and sawtooth façade with a copper finish; the natural light from the overhead skylight illuminating much of the building; and the “comfortable and clean” indoor air generated from the pipe-chilled beam HVAC system, powered by the University’s own utility services, managed by OPP. 

He added that the building was declared ready for limited occupation in June — despite a nationwide labor shortage for construction workers. 

“The team really came together and made it happen to let us occupy the building,” Dubler said, adding that it will come “full circle” when engineers in ECoRE help find solutions for challenges like the labor shortage. “Penn State engineers are going to solve the problem, and we’re going to do it collaboratively.” 

Penn Staters at every stage 

The allowance for occupancy in June began a cascading series of events to complete an intricate campus planning puzzle — what Dubler called “the final push.” The next phase of the college’s master facilities plan — the renovation of the historic Sackett Building, the demolition of the Engineering Units and, eventually, the demolition of Hammond Building — required a complex, coordinated transition plan for faculty, staff and student workers in those buildings to be relocated to ECoRE, much of this before the start of the fall semester. 

“When planning, designing and constructing any project, it takes more than a village to create a world-class facility such as ECoRE,” said Michael Palotas, division vice president and national higher education leader for Whiting-Turner. “I can proudly say that transparency, open communication and trust were strong traits from all stakeholders. The faculty, staff and students are going to quickly learn this is a game-changing facility.” 

Palotas, who graduated from Penn State in 2003 with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and a minor in engineering leadership and development, is one of an estimated 35 Penn State alumni who have contributed to the project.  

“This building has made me consider coming back to get another engineering degree,” he said, pointing to the cutting-edge technology for research and teaching and the “carefully crafted” spaces for quiet study, group projects and overall collaboration. 

Work continues on a small number of areas in the building, but many of the nearly 3,700 new chairs are now filled. Dubler’s regular walks through the building — he’s mulling over the potential for an indoor “ECoRE 5K” to take advantage of his total step count at this point — are ideal for collecting feedback from the new occupants and seeing how things are working, he said. Both Dubler and Hayes also make a concerted effort to regularly thank the workers for their hard work and coordination to get here. 

“It was impressive to watch but also inspiring to talk to the construction workers who provided enthusiastic answers to my questions,” Hayes said. “I’m proud of all who diligently worked to turn the design into a physical reality.”

Cautious Optimism on OSTP Research Cybersecurity Requirements

The Office of Science and Technology Policy has released its final requirements for research security programs, which federal research funding agencies will have to apply to colleges and universities that average $50 million or more per year in federal research grants. The requirements include potentially positive guidelines for research cybersecurity at covered institutions.

In early 2023, the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) released its initial proposal for a "research security program standard requirement." All federal research funding agencies would have to apply the requirement to colleges and universities that receive more than $50 million per year in federal research funding. Footnote 1 The development of these comprehensive research security mandates stems from National Security Presidential Memorandum – 33 (NSPM-33), "Supported Research and Development National Security Policy." When finalized, the "standard requirement" would establish the basic parameters for the research security programs that covered institutions must have in place to continue competing for federal research grants.

Most of the proposed framework addresses research security issues such as faculty conflicts of interest and commitment and research talent recruitment programs of foreign governments. However, it also includes a research cybersecurity section that essentially would make the cybersecurity guidelines for Federal contract information (FCI) the standards for higher education research cybersecurity. As the Policy team discussed in our review of this issue last summer, EDUCAUSE member feedback indicated that the FCI basic safeguards do not fit well with higher education research environments because they are primarily intended for administrative contexts and data. Footnote 2 EDUCAUSE urged OSTP to revamp its proposed research security program guidance and focus on allowing institutions to pursue a risk management approach to research cybersecurity. Rather than the one-size-fits-all checklist model that the FCI guidelines would impose, a risk management approach would enable institutions to prioritize cybersecurity measures and resources based on national security risks associated with research areas and projects.

EDUCAUSE was not alone in asking OSTP to alter its course and base its research security program guidance on risk management. The Association of American Universities (AAU), the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU), and the Council on Governmental Relations (COGR) also stressed the need for a risk management emphasis in other areas of higher education research security. Fortunately, OSTP heard the combined input of our respective associations. Rather than rushing forward with research security program requirements that largely reflected those in its original proposal, OSTP took roughly one year to rethink its guidance before releasing the final version on July 9, 2024. The final research security program guidelines do not base research cybersecurity program requirements on the FCI safeguards. Instead, OSTP points to a pending report on higher education research cybersecurity from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

As the first element of the standardized requirement, federal research agencies shall require institutions of higher education to certify that the institution will implement a cybersecurity program consistent with the cybersecurity resource for research institutions described in the CHIPS and Science Act, [18] within one year after the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) of the Department of Commerce publishes that resource. Footnote 3

Footnote 18 in the memorandum (in brackets above) identifies the relevant NIST report as NIST Interagency Report (IR) 8481: Cybersecurity for Research: Findings and Possible Paths Forward , which is currently available in "Initial Public Draft" (IPD) form. The CHIPS and Science Act provision from which the report stems required NIST to explore the resources it could develop to better support research cybersecurity at higher education institutions. Footnote 4 NIST conducted substantial outreach to EDUCAUSE and its members in pursuing the project, leading to a draft that largely incorporates the recommendations of our research cybersecurity community. It is a welcome development to see OSTP cite the report as the governing reference for research cybersecurity under its research security program guidelines.

Although OSTP's reliance on a report that reflects substantial EDUCAUSE member input provides a basis for cautious optimism regarding how federal research agencies will implement research cybersecurity requirements, there is still room for agency compliance efforts to jump the rails. The OSTP memorandum does not explain or provide parameters for what constitutes "a cybersecurity program consistent with" the NIST report (emphasis added). Footnote 5 Given the overall tenor of the guidelines, which stress the importance of federal research agencies providing substantial flexibility and discretion to higher education institutions in establishing and maintaining research security programs, research agencies might reasonably develop policies and procedures that allow institutions to draw from the range of resources identified in the NIST report—as well as models and frameworks similar to them—in determining the basis of their programs. However, the lack of guidance on what "consistent with" means may leave space for agencies to mandate that their grantees implement specific frameworks or measures presented in the NIST report. Such a development could produce substantial risks for institutions and agencies alike, given that not all resources identified in the draft NIST report will necessarily lead to optimal—or even appropriate—outcomes in all higher education research contexts.

Our concern about the potential for agencies to mandate inappropriate requirements is exacerbated by the fact that the NIST report was not written for the purposes for which OSTP is applying it. As previously mentioned, the CHIPS and Science Act charged NIST with identifying ways the agency could better support higher education research cybersecurity. Given that task, the current draft of the report—not surprisingly—focuses on highlighting a variety of options that institutions might explore to advance their research cybersecurity posture. This focus does not exactly match how OSTP wants to use the report in its research security program guidelines. The advisory nature of the NIST report may lend itself to the institutional flexibility and discretion that the OSTP memo implies should be the basis of federal agency approaches to research (cyber)security. However, the report does not provide clear direction about what cybersecurity should look like for research security programs that comply with NSPM-33. Without a definitive framework, both research agencies and higher education institutions may struggle to determine what constitutes compliance.

Fortunately, EDUCAUSE members should not have to wait long to get a sense of whether federal agencies that fund research will either try to be highly prescriptive or allow covered institutions to choose what elements of the NIST report—or options similar to them—will form the basis of their research cybersecurity programs. The memo from OSTP states that agencies will have six months from the date the memo was published to provide OSTP and the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) with their proposed implementation plans for the research security program guidelines. Once those agency plans are submitted, colleges and universities should be able to better understand what agencies' compliance regimes might look like. Agencies will then have another six months to implement their policies and processes, with institutions getting up to eighteen months from that point to ensure that they have compliant research security programs. Footnote 6 Based on these time frames, we should see research agency implementation plans by early January 2025, with the final execution of those plans due by mid-2025. Institutions would then have to achieve compliance with the relevant agency policies and processes by around December 2026.

Remember, though, that OSTP provides a unique timeline for its research cybersecurity requirements. As stated above, institutions will have one year from the publication of the NIST final report to ensure that they have research cybersecurity programs that are "consistent with" the report. With that in mind, NIST could try to align the release of its final report with the timeline for institutional compliance with OSTP's research security program guidelines. In this case, the overall measures mandated by the OSTP guidelines would have to be in place by the end of 2026. However, nothing in the OSTP memo precludes NIST from starting the research cybersecurity clock much sooner by releasing its final report at some point later this year or in early 2025. At this juncture, we will have to wait for NIST to provide more information about its plans, which will most likely include making some adjustments between the draft and final versions to account for how research agencies and higher education institutions will have to make use of the final report for compliance purposes.

EDUCAUSE will continue to monitor developments in this space and look for opportunities to inform OSTP, NIST, and agency implementation efforts. In the interim, EDUCAUSE members should review the draft NIST report for reference points that align with their current institutional research cybersecurity program and for resources they might find useful in strengthening their research cybersecurity posture given NSPM-33 and the OSTP research security guidelines that derive from it.

These documents include the balance sheet, income statement and cash flow statement.

By analyzing the balance sheet, investors can assess the company's assets, liabilities and equity to understand its financial stability. The income statement provides insights into the company's revenue, expenses and net income, helping to gauge profitability. The cash flow statement reveals how effectively the company generates cash to fund operations and growth.

3. Review Historical Performance

By examining the stock's price movements over several years, investors can identify consistent growth, volatility or resilience during market downturns . Comparing the stock's performance to that of its sector peers can provide insights into its competitive position and market share. Learning how the broader economy has impacted the stock's performance helps investors understand how external factors, like interest rates or economic cycles, might influence its future prospects. 

4. Using Stock Screeners

Stock screeners are digital tools that allow investors to filter stocks based on specific criteria, such as market capitalization, price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio , dividend yield and sector. These tools help streamline the process of identifying potential investments that align with an investor's strategy. For example, an investor might use a screener to find stocks with a low P/E ratio, indicating they could be undervalued. 

Some of the most popular stock screeners include Finviz, which offers a wide range of filters and visual data, Yahoo Finance, known for its user-friendly interface and TradingView, which provides advanced charting and screening options. Many brokerage platforms also offer built-in stock screeners, such as those provided by TD Ameritrade and E*TRADE . 

5. How Does the Stock Fit in Your Portfolio?

Determining whether a stock fits in your portfolio involves evaluating how it aligns with your overall investment strategy, risk profile and diversification goals. For example, if your strategy is focused on long-term growth with a moderate risk profile, adding a high-volatility stock in a speculative industry might not be a good match.
