Ancient Greece
Ancient Greece was the most advanced civilisation of it’s time. They came up with democracy, the Olympic Games and many scientific discoveries.
Life in Ancient Greece
Ancient Greek houses were usually very small, with all the rooms around the side of the house and a courtyard in the middle. This would keep the house cool during the hottest times of the year.
These houses were made out of hardened mud cut into bricks. There were small windows with wooden shutters closed during the hottest part of the day. The roof was covered in clay tiles.
Men and women sometimes lived in separate parts of the house. The dining room had couches and low tables where you could recline during meals.
Larger houses had many rooms spread across at least two floors. These rooms included bathrooms, a dining room as well as a kitchen.
There were many jobs for both men and women in Ancient Greece. You could become a:
- money changer
- bard (write poetry and perform it dramatically in public)
Most Ancient Greeks were farmers, so they just ate what they grew. But even if you weren’t a farmer, vegetables were a main part of their diet. Vegetables you could find in Ancient Greece included:
They even ate boiled dandelions and stinging nettles!
As well as vegetables, they also ate food we are familiar with today, such as apples, pears and cherries.
But you can’t talk about Ancient Greek food and forget olives! Olives were, and still are, an important part of the Greek diet. The Greek goddess Athena gave an olive tree to Athens and spread them across Greece. Olives are included in many recipes, and were even crushed and used to power oil lamps.
Ancient Greeks didn’t eat much meat, because they thought it was food of the barbarians. But they did eat fish – multiple varieties were available in the food markets.
Nearly every meal involved some kind of bread – there were at least 50 varieties of it! They also drunk wine, and they even had rules on how to drink it.
The Greek army was made up of ordinary citizens who were trained as soldiers. They fought using spears and shields, which had complex patterns painted onto them.
Ancient Greece had multiple cities, each of which had their own armies, laws and customs. The Spartans are the most well-known army in Greece.
Who were the Spartans?
The Spartans were the army that protected the city of Sparta. Because of it’s highly skilled army, Sparta became the dominant city in Greece. It’s most famous victory was in the city of Troy, where a wooden horse filled with Spartan soldiers was given to the city as a present. Once inside it’s walls, the soldiers came out of the horse and destroyed the city.

Programs for Kids
Our kids’ programs delight and entertain children with engaging stories, reading, and learning that instills curiosity and wonder about the world around them.
Registrations for programs are available one week before the program takes place.
Kids read to a therapy dog.
Therapy Partners, Inc. partners with the library to provide this program. Please keep an eye on the calendar for dates.
Registration is required and is available one week before the program.
Children will have 15 minutes each to read to a therapy dog, giving them an attentive, always appreciative audience.
This program is for ages 6-12.
Storytime offers an engaging and educational reading program designed for children aged 0-5. Join us for singing songs, interactive felt board stories, reading sessions, crafting activities, and a delightful time together! Siblings are welcome to attend though we will not have extra crafts. Registration is required.

Starts in September! Write A Book is a writing program for children aged 8-12.
Unlock your child’s creative potential with our engaging and inspiring writing class designed specifically for young minds! About 80 percent of Greece consists of mountains. The Pindus Mountains run north and south on the mainland. Greece’s highest peak, Mount Olympus, is in the east; it rises to 9,570 feet (2,917 meters). Summers are hot and dry, and winters are mild and rainy. Earthquakes are common.
Plants and Animals
About one-fourth of Greece is forested. The northern mountains have forests of chestnut, ash, and beech trees. Firs and pines grow on the upper slopes. Other plant life includes evergreen oak and cypress trees, as well as juniper, myrtle, and oleander shrubs.
Bears , wolves , wildcats, martens , wild boars, lynx , and deer live in the mountain forests. Jackals , wild goats , and porcupines live in the south. Greece’s birds include herons , storks , and pelicans .
Manufacturing is also important to the economy. Factories produce food and beverages, chemicals, machinery, clothing, petroleum products, and other goods. Mines provide bauxite, the raw material for making aluminum. Greece also has high-technology and telecommunications industries.
Agriculture forms a smaller part of the economy. However, Greece is known for making wine and olive oil from its grapes and olives . The grapes and olives, as well as oranges and lemons , grow in the warm coastal regions. Other crops include sugar beets, wheat , corn , tomatoes , cotton , and tobacco . The mountain regions are used mainly for herding sheep and goats. The fishing industry also provides food for Greece.
In the late 20th century Greece faced a number of economic problems. Despite its economic struggles, in 1981 Greece was admitted to the organization of countries that eventually became the European Union (EU).
Unification
The new state did not include all of the territory of ancient Greece. During the 1800s and early 1900s Greece regained control over much of its historic land. In 1912–13 Greece fought alongside Serbia, Bulgaria, and Montenegro in the First Balkan War against Turkey. In 1913 Greece joined Serbia in the Second Balkan War against Bulgaria. As a result of the Balkan Wars, Greece regained control over Crete and much territory on the mainland.
Wars with Turkey
In 1917 Greece entered World War I on the side of the Allies. Turkey sided with the Germans. Fighting between Greece and Turkey continued long after the end of World War I in 1918. By 1919 Greece had won significant territory from Turkey, including the city of Smyrna. In 1921–22 Greece and Turkey fought another war. Turkey easily defeated Greece and reclaimed much of the land that Greece had taken.
World War II and Civil War
In 1941, during World War II , Nazi Germany invaded Greece. The German army withdrew from Greece in 1944.
After World War II, civil war broke out in Greece between communist and anti-communist forces. Many Greeks supported the communists, who had played a leading role in the war against Germany. Worried by the spread of communism, the United States and Britain supported the anti-communist forces. The anti-communists won the war in 1949.
Postwar Greece
After the war, political problems made rebuilding difficult. In 1967 a group of army officers seized control of the country. The military government remained in power until 1974, when a democratic government was elected. That year Greece and Turkey nearly fought a war over control of the island of Cyprus .
Greece had disputes with other neighbors as well. In the 1990s, the country of Yugoslavia broke apart. One part became the republic of Macedonia . People in Greece did not think the new country should be called Macedonia. The area of Macedonia was part of Greece in ancient times. After many years of disagreement, the country to the north of Greece officially became the Republic of North Macedonia in 2019.
At the beginning of the 21st century Greece was working to resolve those issues and to strengthen its membership in the European Union (EU). In late 2009, however, the country faced severe economic problems. The problems threatened to affect other countries in Europe because of their connection through the EU. In May 2010 the Greek government tried to address the problems by raising taxes and cutting programs. The measures led to massive protests. By August 2018 Greek’s economic outlook was positive. The economy was growing and unemployment rates were falling.
