In addition to medical expertise, the role requires a high level of stress and pressure tolerance. I’ve been in emergency situations several times in my life when someone close to me has fallen ill suddenly and unexpectedly.

I was impressed and inspired by the paramedics’ quick and professional response.

From a young age, I was fascinated with medicine and healthcare . At no point did my dream of higher education rescind because I chose to have a family.

As a self-motivated individual, I have worked hard to improve my teaching in recent years. Due to my desire to safeguard health, I completed Advanced Certificates in Food Safety and Health & Safety in 2010. Additionally, I have earned several certificates in Adult Learner Support.

My current studies at Royal College include Psychology, Health Related Studies, Study Skills, Life Sciences (Double) and updating my OCN English and Maths.

In addition to ‘Cells and Tissue’, ‘Digestion and Nutrition, Microbiology, and Human Physiology, I also enjoy the Life Sciences.

I am confident that my work experience will help me in my studies of paramedic science. Having worked as a sales administrator, I am highly organized, which will ensure that my studies are thorough and complete.

Additionally, I have worked as an HR Manager and as an Operations Manager, which has honed my leadership skills and provided me with the opportunity to work dynamically in a team environment.

Due to my business experience, I am also a proficient user of computer programmes such as Microsoft Office, as well as a confident presenter.

It is my experience that the best way to optimize performance is to maintain a positive and friendly working environment among my colleagues and workers.

Prospective paramedics must demonstrate teamwork, leadership, and decision-making skills in order to prove themselves worthy.

When I’m not working, I’m an avid motorsports fan. My involvement with the sport began when I was 14, competing in go-cart races. I have gone on to compete in road rallying and unique stage racing, and since 2014 I have been a serious competitor in Rally-cross.

I also relish every moment I can spend with my family. I am a single mother of four wonderful children who encourage me to become the best I can possibly be. I have successfully balanced my family life with full-time jobs and studying over the years, so I am used to working under a certain amount of pressure, but I feel I am a strong and capable woman who can rise to meet any challenge.

I am full of optimism and belief in a brighter tomorrow, and I strive to be able to use my skills so that I can help people experience the best of life.

I believe that I have a long list of strong characteristics that will make me an ideal candidate for this course. My years as a single mother have taught me to have a compassionate nature, yet I am quick to make decisions and willing to take a leading role during crisis situations.

I have strong communication skills and a calm, reassuring manner which is essential in times of pressure. I am well-organised, resilient, adaptable, and incredibly determined to achieve my goals. To be a paramedic has been an ongoing dream in my life and I will stop at nothing to make it come true.

I hope one day to combine my motor-sport passion and medical knowledge, and become a motorbike paramedic.

I have always had a deep fascination with the human body and how it works. This curiosity led me to pursue a career in the medical field, and I have recently completed my A-levels in Biology, Chemistry, and Psychology.

I am now eager to take the next step in my journey to becoming a paramedic, and I am excited to apply for a place on the Paramedic Science course.

The opportunity to study at a university with a reputation for producing highly skilled paramedics is a dream come true for me. I am confident that the course will provide me with the knowledge and skills I need to excel in this challenging and rewarding profession.

Paramedic science degree

These degree programmes will educate potential paramedics to the appropriate clinical, professional and academic standards. They are evidence-based courses that combine diverse academic, interpersonal and physical skills to produce well-rounded practitioners. Courses are inter-disciplinary, with opportunities for specialisation, and will develop in you the knowledge, skills and competences that underpin practice across the paramedic science field.

Paramedics are highly skilled professionals who work in challenging, exciting and dynamic environments on the frontline of healthcare. They work principally in an emergency, out of hospital care setting with patients and their families. Programmes reflect this, with courses integrating theory and practise, subsequently students will have many occasions to put theory into practise through work placements. Degrees modules are also regularly updated to take into account rapid changes within the profession, from increasing medical technology to public awareness of healthcare issues.

The expert knowledge and skills you will learn on this course will ensure that patients receive the best possible care in any emergency and pre-hospital situations. Upon qualification you will be able to provide mobile healthcare to patients, by quickly implementing and evaluating their health care needs.

On completion of a degree course you will be eligible to register with the Health Professions Council (HPC) as a paramedic. This is a legal requirement that anyone who wishes to practice using a title protected by the Health Professions Order 2001 is on the HPC Register.

Paramedic science degree course overview

Programmes tend to be modular in approach and encompass the integration of theory, practice and research throughout. To ensure that you are competent both academically and professionally, a wide range of learning experiences, teaching and assessment methods will be used. Apart from standard lectures, teaching will also include; keynote lectures, group discussion and debate, student-led seminars, structured reflection, enquiry based learning, skills teaching and learning in practice.

On any practice placements you will be required to work early, evening, nights  and weekend shifts to ensure you gain a range of experience and meet the programme requirements. These practice placements can include both urban and rural settings, and during your time there you will be supported by clinical mentors or appropriately qualified personnel (who are there to turn to if you have any questions). Placements can be in a range of settings such as; emergency ambulances, operating theatres, emergency departments or medical assessment units. This experience will give you the chance to see patients on a daily basis and adapt to working within a real life hospital or medical environment.

The course content will be delivered using a student-centred approach, allowing them to develop their practical skills in safe, simulated teaching environments, where the teaching team will include paramedics, nurses, anaesthetists. Back up is provided through the provision of module leaders, personal tutors and link teachers, all of whom offer academic and pastoral support when required.

A variety of methods will be used to assess your knowledge and competence, including; tests, coursework assignments, case studies, assignments/essays /reports, multiple choice exams, presentations and clinical practice assessments.

“Paramedics have a great deal of responsibility, which can be scary for some people. For me however it’s the exact opposite, I look at it as being an amazing career where I will be meeting real people and helping them in their time of need. To gain more experience of this field I currently work as a volunteer for St Johns Ambulance. Whilst on duty I use my advanced first aid skills to treat people with injuries. On some occasions my team would be the first person on the scene of an accident dealing with unconscious patients, or those who are not breathing or bleeding heavily. I have received advanced training from them and have the certificates to prove it. Their training facilities were superb, and included specialised manikins, which could be programmed to simulate numerous conditions. These provided me with provide real-time clinical scenarios where I had to find pulses, blood pressure and respiratory sounds, etc.

After visiting many campuses, researching and talking to quite a few learned people, I have come to the conclusion that your university is ideal for me and my ambitions. I feel that your combination of classroom study and work-based practice is just right, as it allows a student to apply new knowledge and practise new skills on the road as they progress through the course. Upon successful completion, the BSc (Hons) in Paramedic Science programme will enable you to apply for registration as a Paramedic with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), and practice under the protected title of Paramedic. The structure of the award has been developed through mapping against the HCPC Standards of Proficiency for registered paramedics, the Institute for apprenticeships and technical education’s paramedic standard, the Quality Assurance Agency's benchmark statements for Paramedic Science, and the College of Paramedics (CoP) 2019 Curriculum Framework Guidance. The award recognises the broad knowledge, skills and behaviours required of a Paramedic, and incorporates a strong work-based learning component, with a skills framework mapped to the requirements of the role. The BSc (Hons) in Paramedic Science sits within the Centre of Excellence in Paramedic Practice, as part of the Institute of Health.

Course Overview

A Degree Apprenticeships combines vocational work-integrated learning with academic study, allowing you to study for a degree whilst you take part in practical, on the job training. The University of Cumbria is committed to offering practice-based learning, combined with robust employment-focused academic design and delivery, equipping you with the knowledge, skills and behaviours to succeed in your chosen profession. Learners will need to meet the accreditation of prior learning and all other entry requirements to join the programme at the start of level 5. The programme of study is delivered over a 24-month period through a blended learning delivery model that will see learners engaging with skills and simulation on site and theory in an online environment. What you will learn.

This programme has been validated by the Health and Care Professions Council and is aligned to the appropriate regulatory standards issued by the Health and Care Professions Council. To ensure our programme provides you with a relevant and current knowledge base, the design of this programme is aligned to the College of Paramedics (2019) Curriculum Guidance 5th edition, following a spiral curriculum. Applicants must meet the level 4 learning outcomes of the programme to commence study in Year 2 (Level 5). Here critical thinking and analysis skills are built upon, with learners developing their own academic and professional identity whilst exploring Evidence Based Practice and beginning to critically analyse evidence and literature. In year 3 (level 6) learners will develop further and be able taught to critically evaluate, synthesis and draw their own conclusions from existing evidence. Critical thinking and analysis skills are built upon, with learners developing their own academic and professional identity whilst exploring Evidence Based Practice and beginning to critically analyse evidence and literature.

You will explore a range of maladaptive changes that occur in commonly seen and commonly encountered medical and traumatic presentations and holistic management strategies across the lifespan.
• Research Methods This module aims to develop your understanding of evidence-based research in paramedic practice. You will learn an array of knowledge and skills to equip you to develop your research proposal and undertake a research project.
• Clinical Practice 2 This module will enable you to undertake a period of development in practice and to be summatively assessed as competent in a range of expected professional values, skills and competencies for the developing paramedic, as identified in your year two clinical practice assessment documentation. You will develop your skills and understanding of effective patient care and decision-making.
• Social Health and Behavioural Sciences This module will develop your understanding of societal health determinants, key health and social care policies that shape and influence paramedic practice. You will review and understand global health systems and explore the influence of politics and economics on the health care system.
• Professionalism, Law and Ethics This module will further develop your understanding of leadership theories and develop and understand your own leadership skills. You will develop your knowledge of ethics and law and the relationship between the two; You will also develop your understanding of culture, and the importance of a culture of transparency and openness.

Learners will be taught how to critically evaluate, synthesise, and draw their own conclusions from existing evidence. This will aid in the building of confidence as autonomous registered health care professionals.

• Dissertation This module will allow you to demonstrate your ability to work independently to produce a small research-based project, on a negotiated topic, within the sphere of paramedic practice.
• Contemporary Issues in Paramedicine This module will explore contemporary issues related to paramedic practice. You will develop your understanding of dealing with and leading complex situations including unplanned and unexpected death across the lifespan. This will include working across and with various multi-disciplinary teams in complex scenarios.
• Clinical Practice 3 This module will enable you to undertake a period of development in practice and to be summatively assessed as competent in a range of expected professional values, skills and competencies as you develop as an autonomous clinician. This module will develop your autonomous management and decision making in complex and unpredictable patient encounters.
• Understanding Primary Care This module will advance your knowledge of the structure and function of primary and urgent care structures and how a paramedic functions within these systems.
• Leadership and Management This module will develop your understanding and skills in leadership and mentorship as you move towards completion of the programme. You will develop your ability to lead complex situations and how best to lead and manage the people in your team. The module will develop your understanding of change management, quality improvement processes, clinical governance and professional regulation.

Teaching & Assessment

How you will learn.

A variety of teaching and learning methods are designed to match learning outcomes and to provide you with some experience of the method best suited to your own learning style, we support your move to becoming an independent and mature learner. This course emphasises practical learning and reflection on and in practice. You are actively facilitated to apply and integrate your professional knowledge within your practice and to develop an enquiring critical approach to study and professional practice. The programme team use Technology Enhanced Learning to maximise your learning experience through a blended learning approach. Blended learning is a combination of online delivery methods and face to face learning activities and is advocated by Health Education England (2022).

Carefully considered online learning activities such as lectures, seminars, group tasks and resources are complimented by in-person learning activities such as simulations, clinical skills workshops, facilitated practice and group work. This allows learners to gain an appreciation for the link between theory and practice in paramedicine, whilst acquiring the relevant knowledge, behaviours, skills and competence required to achieve paramedic registration with the HCPC.

How you will be assessed

Formative assessment is an important feature within the programme and may include in‐class or online activities such as research diaries, assignments and tests. Formative assessments are assessments for learning, and they allow learners the opportunity to receive feedback on their knowledge, skills, behaviours and progression towards their summative assessments.

Summative assessments are assessments of learning, and these assessments have been designed to provide a creative and balanced strategy throughout the programme. The summative assessments all relate to the working environment of a paramedic enabling you to take your assessed learning into the practice environment to optimise the provision of patient care. These assessments include practical assessments, presentations, and assignments.

As a pre-requisite for this programme, prospective applicants must be employed by an organisation who use the University of Cumbria as an education provider for this apprenticeship.

Where you have received a conditional offer subject to achieving particular grades/UCAS tariff scores, and do not quite meet these scores, please try not to worry, where vacancies exist our Admissions specialists will review your whole application again and take account of any mitigating circumstances and reassess your suitability for the course.

At interview you must clearly explain what has led you to apply for Paramedic Science and the attributes you would bring to it. You must also demonstrate a good understanding of paramedicine; have excellent communication skills; motivation and commitment to pursuing paramedicine as a career and the potential to succeed as a health professional.

Following interview if you are offered a place it will be subject to satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service clearance (DBS), medical fitness to practice, proof of qualifications and a satisfactory reference.

Going to higher education can transform a person’s life. We use contextual admissions to make sure that we are accessible to everyone who has the potential to succeed. Qualifications and grades are important, but they are considered alongside other information that helps universities to identify potential and widen access to university level study. The University of Cumbria will make offers to applicants that live in postal code regions with the lowest participation in Higher Education (Polar 4 quintile 1 – you can check your postcode here ) and care leavers, offers will be made at the bottom of any UCAS Tariff range. Fees & Funding

Tuition fees, 2024 - 2025.

Tuition fees are set annually and are subject to review each year. The University may therefore raise tuition fees in the second or subsequent years of a course, in line with inflation and/or the maximum permitted by law or Government policy. Students will be notified of any changes as soon as possible.

Degree apprenticeships are only offered to students undertaking the course as part of their employment. The apprenticeship training is therefore funded by the employer using their apprenticeship levy, with or without a contribution depending on the size and status of the organisation.

Apprentices will not be required to pay any fees and will not be eligible for Student Finance England maintenance support as they are in receipt of a salary. See further information on our Information for Aspiring Apprentices page.

Ranked 1st in the UK by the Complete University Guide and 4th in the UK in the Guardian University Guide 2024, the University of Surrey’s Paramedic Science course offers the chance to meet the diverse needs of patients, families and carers and gain the confidence to excel in this field. What’s more, 100% of the University’s health sciences students go on to employment of further study after graduation (Graduate Outcomes 2024, HESA).

Having In this blog, I have broken down this course into 4 words that I think define it best hopefully to help you understand what it entails a little bit more.

Multifaceted:

This degree encourages each student to become a complex and well-rounded health care professional. This course, unlike others, brings together various skills, including those that are both intellectual and practical. As paramedic students, we will work in various settings throughout our course, these include care homes, specialist hospital departments, A&E, primary care settings, labour and delivery, prisons and community teams. This course allows you to get a taste of various different specialisms whilst also generalising in the care of anyone who we might come across during our usual shifts on ambulances. With this course consisting of a minimum of 50% practical and 50% theory, there are various learning styles to suit everyone whilst allowing you to learn on the job from the very first year.

Unpredictable :

Due to the fact that our field is constantly changing and developing, it is undoubtedly unpredictable. The profession that you are working towards is one where each day and shift will be completely different from the last. As a result, this helps to maintain a constant level of excitement throughout the course and onwards into your career. This requires the ability to adapt to the unpredictability of each shift. Each patient we see and care for, will be different to the last with their own individual problems and concerns. Due to the layout and schedule of this course, which includes frequent placement and constant support, this is a skill that is always being developed throughout this degree. Sometimes, this unpredictability can be difficult and test your mental strength however this encourages you to be tested, grow and further develop the skills you have along with new ones. The mentors you will work with throughout your degree have helped me to learn about the unpredictability of this course, but also allow me to understand how it can help me to learn and how to adapt to this.

Without a doubt, this degree is extremely rewarding. Although it is hard-work, the skills that you learn are invaluable and can be applied to both your personal and work life. These include confidence, organisation, communication, empathy, resilience, teamwork and leadership skills to name a few. So, these skills will not only help to form a qualified health care professional with the ability to aid people in their time of need, but also develop the individual themselves. The main reason I would describe this degree and work as rewarding would be because you get the opportunity to see impact of your work as you complete in, then and there. We are privileged to see and be trusted, to help people who are at their lowest and in need of help. Not only does this allow constant learning with the ability to adjust and adapt your practice, but it also provides you with the incentives and ,hopefully, reminders of why you have chosen this degree and the impact you can have.

Finally, and most importantly, for all these reasons this course is fun! You get to meet people all aiming to achieve the same outcome, with a similar mindset and level of excitement. This degree is the same in the sense that it ends with the qualification needed to become a paramedic, however the journey, experiences and memories that each student paramedic has will completely differ from the next allowing space for you to make adjustments that will best suit yourself.

I hope this has helped to better understand the course and the characteristics it is able to provide.

Clinical placements

You’ll spend half of your training in clinical placements, allowing you to develop your knowledge, skills and practice within healthcare settings, under the supervision of qualified practitioners. You’ll complete 30 placement hours a week, for approximately 20 weeks in your first, second and third years of study.

Previous students have completed their placements in the NHS, with private healthcare organisations and with charities. These have been across several settings, including accident and emergency departments, ambulance stations and vehicles, hospital units (e.g. children’s, coronary care, maternity and mental health), minor injury centres, operating theatres and specialist ambulance services.
