Saturday, 6 April 2024: 9am-12.20pm via Zoom. Course Fee: $169. Click HERE to BOOK.   Is your writing…different? Are you drawn to social issues and extraordinary ways to explore them? Magic realism conjures the imagery of Frida Kahlo and Henri Rousseau and is something Salman Rushdie calls “a newish name for a very old thing”. We’re talking Kafka, Woolf, Márquez, and Murakami. Linked with Latin American writers of the ‘50s, magic realism has deep roots for storytellers. Launched at the ‘19 Whistler Writer’s Festival in Canada to a full house and online in ’20 with the Queensland Writers Centre, Magic Realism for Rebels is designed for fiction writers with a mission. Laced with writing prompts and exercises, we’ll investigate this very special genre in the following ways:

  • Magic realism explores gender, diversity and power disparities. What voices do we hear that need to be shared through our stories and how can we capture them?
  • Magic realism is a way to tell the truth, when truth is drowned out by force. We’ll explore point of view as an intrinsic and fluid aspect of this genre’s structure.
  • Like myths, fables, folk and fairy tales, these naturalistic stories are grounded in reality and threaded with fantastic elements to convey visions that may be confrontational. How do we balance such forces in our writing?
  • Transforming the wisdom of our experience into cohesive prose is a mean feat. How does our place of origin and the events that have grown us translate into stories readers will care about, and even see playing out in their own struggles?

If you want to write with purpose, imagination and true grit, tune in with awarded author/editor, Lauren Elise Daniels and shake the tree. Have your cuppa and snacks on standby and prepare for some wild writing sessions.

Course reviews.

“I have loved every minute of this course, I didn’t want it to end. I loved reading other’s writing, writing feedback and receiving feedback. I feel I have got to know people and their stories, such a treasure chest of stories. I sincerely recommend this course to anyone.” Margaret, August

“One of the greatest characteristics of the course is the amount of support you receive, not just from your instructor but from every other writer taking the course.” Robert, February

“You saw time and time again, the Writers’ Studio lived up to their mission – ” … a team of passionate, experienced and dedicated tutors will guide you through the writing journey every step of the way.” Marie, May

“This course was so well thought out and very carefully planned. It was a really tight module. I was surprised at how quickly our little online community bonded.” Louise, February

“I work as a TV drama scriptwriter and editor for a living … and in the past, I have also run creative writing courses for high school students, so I was curious to see how this course would be structured, and I have to say I was mightily impressed. The way the course built from week to week was excellent. And the design of the “Writers’ Board” where everyone could share and give feedback (with additional insight from the tutor) was brilliant.” Elizabeth, February

“… My fellow writers and I leave feedback on each other’s pieces. I can’t place a value on the experience of receiving feedback on my writing. Giving feedback has changed my writing for the better. I feel like writing is within my reach – I’ve picked up tools that will help me and serve me in my journey.” Lisa, May

“… I have thoroughly enjoyed the process, the freedom, the encouragement and pleasure that comes from “publishing” your work and having supportive, constructive feedback. It has been a great, validating experience …” Nella, August

“This course has been the single best investment in myself I have yet made … For me, this course has delivered 100% on the website’s claim, “If your dream is to write, our courses will get you doing it.” Matt, May

“Amazed at how much I learnt from the constructive reviews that I received with every piece of writing.” Nicole, May

“Who would have thought, it completely changed my life. Now all my previous attempts of writing seem to me childish as   my skills have improved so much.” Anastasia, May

“I learned so many incredibly useful techniques.” Shannon, May

Boy Swallows Universe author Trent Dalton reflects on his success on Creative Types with Virginia Trioli

Virginia Trioli, a woman in her 50s, and Trent Dalton, a man in his 40s, smile together, Dalton with his arms behind his back.

Life wasn't supposed to be this good for Trent Dalton.

Standing on the Kurilpa Bridge in Brisbane, over the wide, churning snake of a river that he loves so much, Dalton shakes his head in amazement: more than a million copies sold of his autobiographical novel, Boy Swallows Universe; a TV adaptation that has now screened to more than 7 million; crowds that stop us while we stand and chat on this bridge and raise three cheers for Dalton. Really.

He laughs at the absurdity of it all because he was supposed to end up a long way down from here.

"I'm 44 now. And I see this very clear image of myself where I'm just a drunk eating Red Rooster chips and watching Platoon every night. That would have happened so easily: It's in my blood to be a bit destructive. But creativity saved my life," Dalton says.

In the premiere episode of Creative Types with Virginia Trioli, the literary sensation Trent Dalton walks us through the city that is his muse, his canvas and that maps the strange and sometimes almost unbelievable narrative of his life.

And as he tells of his family complexities and trauma, of the sorrow and loss, this astonishingly cheerful and optimistic man shines with a life force that seems to be something he has chosen for himself: There is certainly every excuse for him to be a different kind of man.

But as this series explores, those who are driven to create are powerless to resist it. And Dalton is insistent that's what saved him.

"I swear I can't do anything. I can barely put up a tent. It would take me about two hours to change a tyre," he says.

"The one thing I was able to do was listen to people and turn the things they tell me into stories. And that is a creative process. And it allowed me to process my own stuff in the most powerful way that wasn't Jim Beam bourbon."

Dalton is one of the most loved and successful writers in Australia today, both as the author of searing social affairs journalism of the kinds of issues he witnessed as a child, and the creator of harsh but ecstatic worlds where young people reach for something better. As the son of a mother who was jailed for heroin dealing, and an alcoholic, agoraphobic father, he understands their worlds intimately.

Trent smiles and points to a monitor behind the scenes of filming with plays a scene between the brothers

The celebrated crime writer Matthew Condon, who became a friend of the author's at their newspaper, The Australian, says he was aghast to learn of the milieu Dalton was raised in.

"Brisbane in the 70s and 80s was the most dangerous place for violent crime in the country – and Trent was right in the middle of it. Trent told me the story of a guy giving him the death stare at some event, and it turns out it was a well-known triple convict right there at the family BBQ," he says.

Dalton's life since Boy Swallows Universe has turned into something he struggles to comprehend.

A play of his collection of true stories about love, Love Stories, is being prepared for Brisbane Festival, and at rehearsal he rides the emotions of the stories unfolding on stage as though he's hearing them for the first time.

A white middle-aged man with dark hair wearing a maroon jacket leans over a railing in front a a river

Boy Swallows Universe has been turned into a smash success on Netflix, and his new novel Lola in the Mirror  bridges his enduring interest in the stories of the disenfranchised with the wildly imaginative part of his fiction.

But the gap between the two worlds is fine. Dalton says he recently caught up with a mate who grew up in the same Bracken Ridge housing commission area as he did — a place where so many families live on the edge: "He said 'Trent, not all of us get to write books about it,' and that really crystallised it for me: the gift that I was given for some reason."

Actor Simon Baker — who is almost unrecognisable playing Robert, a fictionalised version of Dalton's father Noel, in the Netflix series — says that gift is the hyper-vigilance and noticing eye that comes from Dalton's trauma: a state of mind with which Simon says he is also familiar.

"We both joked about how we get to use our own hyper-vigilance as a superpower to express and to connect with people and how lucky and fortunate we are that we both have a creative outlet for that kind of thing," he says.

Simon, as Robert, smokes and drinks as he paints in his living room.

Baker says he and Dalton have become soulmates through their collaboration.

Dalton says he became overwhelmed and had to leave the set when he saw how powerfully Baker had captured his father.

"Trent said to me, 'My father was equally the most terrifying person I've ever met and the most beautiful person I've ever met' and something went off inside me when I heard that," Baker says.

Dalton is still consumed with writing, he says, surrounded by the things and the people he loves: photos of his family, little objects and trinkets he's collected over the years, including a cricket bat that is a replacement from his brothers for the one he loved as a child that his father pawned when they had absolutely no money.

He used to ride down to the pawnbroker's window, keening over the beloved treasure they couldn't afford to get back. Eventually it sold, of course.

Virginia Trioli and Trent Dalton smile together, Dalton's arm around Trioli. They're standing on a Brisbane sidewalk.

They are the sort of searing stories you'd expect to embitter someone else, but as Dalton arrives to adoring crowds at the Adelaide Writers' Week, the affirmation has swept everything else away. What does he want from these passionate readers?

"Sustenance," he says. "I want courage. I want approval … Yeah, I'm a douchebag. I want them to go, 'Hey, I appreciated you doing the year of angst.' It's really soul-filling and I need to be filled up."

Watch Trent Dalton on Creative Types with Virginia Trioli on ABC TV and ABC iview on Tuesday April 9.
