Any questions?
It’s never too late to start speech therapy. Adults commonly receive speech therapy to overcome problems from childhood that weren’t properly treated (such as a stutter or articulation issue), treat speech and language issues due to illness or injury, such as a stroke, Parkinson’s disease, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, or ALS, improve communication skills due to a clinical diagnosis, such as aphasia, acquired apraxia of speech, or dysarthria, improve confidence and communication skills in the workplace, such as public speaking and interviewing, reduce accents that are regional or based on your country of origin, modify the pitch, intonation, and quality of your voice, and more!
The duration of speech therapy is different for everyone, and it depends on several factors. This includes the type of speech disorder or communication challenge, the frequency of speech therapy sessions, how often you practice the skills taught in speech therapy at home, your personal or professional goals, any underlying medical conditions, and more.
Expressable online speech therapy offers flexible hours, including mornings, nights, and weekends, so you can schedule speech therapy around your life–not the other way around. And because it’s online, there’s no commute time involved.
Speech therapy sessions are focused on each client’s care plan, and the activities done during sessions always relate to those goals. So, if a person is in speech therapy to better pronounce the /s/ sound, they’ll begin by learning how to make the sound by itself and work up to practicing it in conversation. Or if someone wants to improve the quality of their voice, their speech therapist will teach them appropriate breathing and vocal exercises. The therapist will aim to do as many trials of each exercise as possible, in order to make the most of each session.
Your speech therapist will constantly be measuring and assessing your response to these exercises. When needed, they’ll make changes to your treatment plan to help you make progress as quickly as possible. Regardless of your goals, your speech therapist will always provide practice activities to complete at home between sessions.
Expressable currently accepts many of the largest insurance companies, and we’re actively working on contracting with new plans across the country. We also offer affordable private pay options and accept HSAs/FSAs for those who do not have insurance coverage or prefer to pay out-of-pocket.

IMPROVEMENT
Adult Speech Therapy for Improving Your Professional Communication
In addition to the reasons mentioned earlier on, plenty of adults choose to see a speech language pathologist to generally refine their communication skills. You don’t need a diagnosis or a doctor’s note to try out speech therapy—if it’s helpful for you, then you’re in the right place.
Some therapists specialize in working with bilingual adults who are interested in modifying their accents. Speech therapy can be a useful tool if you wish to refine your pronunciation.
Others choose speech therapy to increase their comfort and confidence. If speaking in public or gathering verbal information causes stress, a therapist for adults can work with you to build strategies that make life a little easier. Similarly, speech therapy can aid adults for whom intonation and expression don’t come naturally.
WHAT TO EXPECT
What Happens in an Adult Speech Therapy Session?
During the first few visits, your adult speech therapist will get to know you, collect some background information, and learn about your communication goals. They will ask you some questions and may complete an assessment.
As you begin therapy, your therapist will guide you through an individualized therapy plan that fits your specific communication needs.
Between sessions, your therapist will assign you home practice from our Practice Library.
THERAPY LENGTH
How Long Does Speech Therapy for Adults Last?
The duration of speech therapy for an adult depends on a couple of factors, such as the person's diagnosis, the severity of the diagnosis, how often speech therapy sessions are needed, and how involved an individual and caregivers/family are. For example, someone with a TBI might need speech therapy services for only a few short weeks or months if the injury to their brain is minor or moderate.
However, more severe injuries may require years of speech therapy services. Similarly, an individual with a degenerative disease, such as Parkinson’s, might also need months or years of speech therapy to attempt to maintain the functions that they currently have.

Outpatient Speech Language Therapy
Browse this page
Speech-language pathologists treat speech, language, cognitive communication, voice, swallowing, and fluency disorders, and other related conditions. Treatment depends on the nature and severity of the speech disorder; however, the goals of every speech-related treatment program are to:
- Fully assess each patient and develop a comprehensive plan of care
- Help each patient to understand his or her condition and to achieve a comfortable level of communication in personal and professional settings
- Encourage each patient to practice preventive measures and continue with a long-term home program to maintain progress
MedStar Health offers a comprehensive range of outpatient speech-language pathology services for individuals from school age through geriatrics.
Conditions we treat
Our outpatient speech-language pathologists evaluate and treat patients with the following conditions:
- Traumatic brain injury and post-concussive syndrome
- Neuromuscular speech disorders resulting from multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and other conditions
- Encephalopathy
- Head/neck cancer
- Communication and articulation disorders
Swallowing disorders
Communication disorders can be a result of a stroke, traumatic brain injury, head and neck cancer, neurological disorders, and other medical conditions. They include:
- Aphasia, an acquired language disorder characterized by impaired comprehension and production of language as a result of brain damage (most often as a result of a stroke). It can dramatically impair a person's ability to communicate. The main symptom of aphasia is impairment in the ability to speak, while the understanding of speech, reading, and writing can also be impaired.
- Dysarthria, a speech disorder that results from weakness, paralysis, or incoordination of the muscles that control speech, resulting from neurological diseases and injuries. Dysarthria can result from progressive types of neurological disorders such as Parkinson's disease. It can also result from an injury to the brain, such as stroke or head injury.
- Voice disorders, characterized by an abnormality in the pitch, loudness, duration, or quality of the voice. Hoarseness caused by vocal abuse or misuse is the most common voice disorder; however, infection, trauma, reflux, and cancer can also cause voice disorders. Cancer or trauma can result in a total laryngectomy: the removal of the entire voice box or larynx. Removal of the larynx results in a complete loss of voice. In some cases, only part of the larynx is removed (partial laryngectomy), which leaves the patient with an abnormal voice quality.
- Cognitive-linguistic disorders, characterized by problems with attention, memory, organization, reasoning, and social skills that impact communication. A cognitive-linguistic disorder can be a result of a traumatic brain injury or stroke.
Your doctor or healthcare provider may have recommended that you be evaluated by a speech-language pathologist for a swallowing disorder, also called dysphagia. This condition can accompany stroke, traumatic brain injury, Parkinson's disease, dementia, or other neurological disorders. Swallowing disorders can also occur after treatment for head and neck cancers.

Speech and Hearing Therapy
Speech and hearing therapy services focus on enhancing or restoring limited or lost communicative skills or swallowing capabilities lost due to injury, disease, aging or congenital abnormality. Easterseals licensed speech therapists incorporate the use of special facilitory techniques, augmentative and assistive equipment, therapeutic exercise and evaluation tools. Treatment focuses on:
- Addressing disabilities in children, including articulation disorders, language delay and stuttering, and feeding problems
- Providing care to adults who may experience communication disorders, stuttering and cognitive impairment
- Improving oral-motor, swallowing and respiratory skills
- Providing augmentative and alternative communication systems to individuals who cannot rely on speech (hearing) as a means of communication
Services may be provided in an Easterseals outpatient clinic, child development center, or adult day program, as well as at home, at school, and in a variety of other care settings. State and federal laws determine referral requirements and funding opportunities.
Speech and hearing therapy (also known as speech-language pathology and audiology) are important health-related specialties concerned with normal development of human communication and treatment of its disorders. Speech therapy focuses on voice and speech-language skills, while hearing therapy deals with hearing and hearing impairment.
Speech or language disorders may be present at birth or acquired later in life by disease, illness, head injury, substance abuse or allergy.
Hearing loss may be acquired before or during birth if a pregnant woman takes certain drugs or contracts a viral disease such as rubella (German Measles). Children sometimes acquire hearing loss from infection and inflammation of the middle ear or from communicable diseases. Adult hearing may be affected by prolonged exposure to loud noise and the process of aging.
Who Needs Speech-Language Pathology and Audiological Services?
Speech-Language Pathology is used to help:
- Individuals with voice disorders to develop proper control of their vocal and respiratory systems
- Individuals who stutter to learn to cope with the disorder and increase fluency
- Individuals with aphasia (a condition in which an individual has difficulty expressing thoughts and understanding others) as a result of a stroke or head injury. Speech-language pathology helps individuals relearn language and speech skills.
- Children and young adults with language disorders
Audiological services are used to:
- Determine existence and type of hearing impairments
- Provide rehabilitative services
- Assess amplification devices, such as hearing aids
- Teach individuals ways in which they can make the best use of their remaining hearing
Speech and hearing therapists, recognized as speech-language pathologists and audiologists, who provide treatment are professionally trained specialists holding master's degrees or the equivalent from programs accredited by an Educational Standards Board of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).
Some speech-language pathologists and audiologists hold doctoral degrees and work as teachers, advisors, researchers and consultants. Some specialize in certain areas, such as aphasia or hearing disorders in children, or participate in prevention and early identification programs.
Speech-language pathologists who use the initials "CCC-SLP" after their name have passed a national examination administered by the Clinical Certification Board of ASHA. Audiologists who pass a different national test, administered by the board, receive a Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology and qualify to use the initials "CCC-A" after their name. A person who meets requirements in both professional areas may be awarded both certificates.
Individualized Treatment Plans
A speech-language pathologist evaluates a person's speech-language skills, determines the probable cause and extent of any existing disorder and develops appropriate treatment to correct or lessen the communication problem. Clinical methods used depend on the nature and severity of the problem, the age of the client and the client's awareness of the problem.
An audiologist, after evaluating a person's hearing and determining the type of hearing loss, establishes a treatment plan. This may involve therapy, prescription of special equipment such as hearing aids and electronic communication devices and referral for possible surgery or medication.
Both speech-language pathologists and audiologists refer their clients to other sources when necessary and help the client and the client's family understand the problem and treatment plan. They work closely with other professionals in health and education, including physicians, dentists, psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, counselors and teachers.

National Stuttering Association
Speech therapy can play an instrumental role in helping a person who stutters learn techniques to gain greater comfort in speaking. Selecting a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) is an important and highly individual decision. As a resource, the NSA ® provides websites and information for you to use when searching for a SLP.
It’s important to note, there is no “best” method of speech therapy for stuttering. While most treatment approaches help people who stutter, no single method works for everyone, regardless of the advertising claims for some therapies. Research shows that people who stutter see the most successful treatment outcomes when:
- The clinician is experienced in working with people who stutter; and
- The clinician and client have a “therapeutic alliance” that enables them to work well together.
The NSA highly recommends you speak with potential SLPs and ask about their experience and comfort level with people who stutter, their treatment approaches, and their expected outcomes after therapy. Often, the specific questions you ask are not as important as your level of confidence that the SLP is the right one for you. Many SLPs will offer a consultation prior to initiating therapy in which you can ask questions and gauge your own comfort level in working with this professional.
