Azad Jammu and Kashmir abbreviated as AJK, is a self-governing state under Pakistan. The state is divided into three divisions. The divisions are further divided into ten districts. Muzaffarabad is the capital of Azad Kashmir in Pakistan. Neelum is the district of Azad Kashmir.

Neelum Valley is a stunning valley of Muzaffarabad. It looks like a heaven on earth also called the “Paradise of Kashmir”. The beauty of the world is incomplete without it. The valley is famous for thick forest, streams, and rivers, lush green meadows, various waterfalls, several brooks, and massive snow-capped mountains. Neelum valley is a dream place for everyone. Travelling by road is an amazing experience. When you see it for the first time, it looks like a painting in front of you. It is a 144 KM long valley along the Neelum River.

It is named after the river Neelum which flows within the valley, offers a panoramic view of hills on both sides of the river. The river is also famous for trout fish and serving as a natural border between Pakistan and India. Sarwali Peak or Dabbar peak (6326 meters) which is the highest peak in Azad Kashmir is located between Neelum valley. The weather in Neelum is very pleasant in summer. However, it is very cold in winter. Every year a large number of tourists visit Neelum valley. The best time to visit is from March to October.

Ratti Gali is one of the most beautiful lakes in Pakistan. It is located near Keran and Dawarian village in Neelum Valley at an altitude of 12,130 feet (3,700 m). The lake is 18 km from the Dowarian town. You can easily reach the Ratti Gali Lake from Dowarian. Tourists can stay in camps that are available in the Ratti Gali base camp.

Authmuqam Town

Authmuqam is the main town of Neelum valley. It is 73 km from Muzaffarabad. The name Authmuqam is given because it was the 8th station from Muzaffarabad to Upper Valley. Neelum valley has beautiful and panoramic scenery. This valley is parallel to the Kaghan valley. It has a noisy and beautiful river called Neelum River. This river is of fresh and pure water where tourists come and enjoy the place surrounded by lush green trees on both sides of the river. To get the escape from the hell to heaven, Neelum valley is the best place in summers. The valley had high mountains and tunnel of trees all around. The geographical location of Neelum valley is North and North East of Muzaffarabad in Kashmir.There are many surrounding areas of Neelum valley which are also of high importance. Those areas are as follows:

Jagran valley:

Jagran valley is having a beautiful and clear waterfall that attracts the tourists. There is high snow fall in the months of December, January and February. So roads are closed during these months. There is a hydroelectric power plant at the bank of Jagran stream. There is accommodation available for the tourists, which is highly managed by the hydro Electric board. The spot is highly recommended for the nature lover and adventurists. The mountains at Jagran valley are 4000 feet to 1400 feet above the sea level.

6 kilometers from KundalShahi, Kutton is located. Kutton is covered with lush green trees and vast fields. This area has less population as compared to the other areas of Azad Jammu Kashmir. This area has semi luxurious accommodations for the tourist from all around the globe. Hatchery for trout fish was also made by the fishery departments.

From the altitude of 5,000 ft from Neelum valley, keran is located. This is another scenic view of the Azad Jammu Kashmir. The specialty of this place is that, the board of India Pakistan is visible from this area. One can easily have a clear view of the patrol of both the countries.

The area is named after a legendary princess Sharda. The two mountains peaks, Shardi and Nardi are also located at this area, which improved the beauty of this area. The city is very old thus includes the ruins of older building. There was also a university remains present in this location, Sharda University. This showed the signs of education present at the oldertimes.

Neelum village:

Neelum village is covered with lush green trees and high nutritious fruits present in this area.

Kel is one the most striking places of neelum valley. It is a 9 kilometers drive from Sharda which is located at a height of 2097 meters. It is a meeting point of the shounder nallah and the neelum river which leads to gilget agency over shounder pass. Kel is also a base camp of mountaineering activities up to “Sarawaali Peak” 6326 meters above sea level and it is one of the biggest Glaciers (about 25 kms long). It is said to be the highest peak and biggest glacier of Azad Kashmir.

Buses are available on daily basis to travel on this route. Other means of tranport such as jeeps, horses and ponies are also used to travel within the village. Guest house by the AJK tourism department is located in Kel. Other private hotels, hospitals, banks and markets are also available.

Arang Kel is a village and tourist spot in Neelam valley. It is located on the hill top near Kel at the altitude of 8,379 feet. The village is accessible by a 2 kilometers trek from Kel. Beyond this mountain, the next mountain is a part of Indian occupied Kashmir. It is one of the most beautiful locations in the neelum valley.

The area from Kel to Taobat is called the Halmat. A tourist rest house has been constructed at Halmat to provide accommodation facilities to the visitors. It almost takes 4 hours to reach this place from Kel. This is the last hamlet before you reach the LOC.

Ratti Gali Lake:

The lake is  accessible  from  Dowarian  by a 19 kilometers (12 mi) hiking trek. Base camp to Ratti Gali is Dowarian

In summer, the whole land of this attention-grabbing lake becomes a place of flourishing green meadows, wild flowers and glowing alpine plantations while in winter it is covered with white snow and chunks of Glacier floats in the water of Ratti Gali Lake.

Gurase Valley

Gurase Valley in Azad Kashmir is the most attractive but remote and backward area of the  Neelum valley  which is located in the north-east of the Muzaffarbad. This area is the heart of sustainable  tourism  in Azad Kashmir.

It is spotted in many sub-valleys from the Kail to Taubutt. The area is full of amazing flowers and fauna and enriched with natural resources like rivers, natural springs, forest and minerals.

Rare species in Gurase Valley are also found which are now getting extinct due to illegal hunting, deforestation. Govt. of Azad Kashmir has declared the valley as a national park to protect and wise use of Natural resources for income generation of local community.

Gurase stretches from “Sharda Peeth” in west to “Minimarg” in east and “Drass” on another side.

From Kel gurase valley is approx 38 kilometers

Presently Gurais is divided into three regions: 1. From Baghtor to Sharda Peeth. (Occupied by PaK-Pakistan Kashmir under the name of Neelum Valley. 2. From Baghtor to Abdullae Tulail. (Occupied by the Indians, known as Gurez Valley). 3. From Chorwan (Sandyaal) to Burzil pass. (direct control of Pakistan as a part of “Northern Areas”.

Chita   Khata   Lake:

Chitta literally means White and Katha means water reservoir. Chitta Katha Lake is in a shape of deep bowl body and is surrounded with snow all the year.

Chita Khata Lake is situated at an altitude of 3,800 meters. Lake is only accessible in the months of July and August.

There is a road from Kel to Shounter Valley. First tourists have to reach UTLI DOMEL village at night and stay there and proceed  forward in the morning. Tourists had to mount for 5 to 6 hours to reach the lake. Provision of horses and jeeps from UTLI DOMEL is there.

Shounter valley:

This valley lies in Upper Neelum valley. It can be accessed through a jeep track from Kel which only gets opened for a few months of the year.

Shounter Lake is a small but very beautiful lake in the Shounter Valley. Base camp from this pointis Sarveli peak. The Shounter Nullah and river Neelum meets at this place and leads to Gilgit Agency over the Shounter Pass.

Around seven lakes were found and discovered and some were still hidden. Following lakes were discovered in shonthar valley:

  • Shounthar/Spoon Lake
  • Sar Wali Peak base Camp Lake
  • Asman Baik Sar/lake
  • Baboon Lake
  • Parrian Sar

Tao butt is the last station and end point of Neelum valley. Tao Butt is known for its shrubbery bounty of the nature. Heavy snowfall in winter, and the cold season continue  about 6 months starting from October to April end. Due to land sliding path is not seen.

In summer it is an appealing place for tourist to visit. Neelum River emerges from here in the valley and continues its journey till Domail.

Tao butt has few red roof huts comprise this town which when seen from a high ground remind you of the calendar pictures of Switzerland.

People of this area are hard working. They stock up their groceries for 4 months and spend their time in homes.

During the ongoing argument between Pakistan and India the area itself is in LOC zone (Line Of Control). To get here you need to get permission from the Pakistan Army and Original CNIC must be submitted at the Check Post.

Neelum Valley is a 144 km long bow-shaped thick forested region in Azad Kashmir in Pakistan. It is named after the Neelam river, which flows serpentinely down hills to merge itself into the river Jhelum at Domail. Domai l, the confluence of two mighty rivers, presents highly fascinating scene of youthful embrace. The valley is situated in the north-east of Muzaffarabad, running parallel to Kaghan Valley. The two valleys are only separated by snow-covered peaks, some over 4,000 meters (13,000 ft) above sea level.

This is one of the most beautiful valleys of Azaad Kashmir, and it hosts several brooks, freshwater streams, forests, lush green mountains, and a river. Here, you see cataracts falling down the mountains; their milky-white waters flowing over the roads and splashing against the rocks, before commingling with the muddy waters of River Neelum. The geographical features enhance the natural beauty of the Valley. The new roads allow Pakistanis to discover the snow-capped peaks, lakes and lush-green meadows of the picturesque valley. The valley is connected to Muzaffarabad by the Neelam Road, which leads up to Kel. In the winters, the road from Keran onwards is blocked due to heavy snowfall, making it difficult to reach the upper parts of the valley.

Neelum Valley is a heavenly spot with peaks as high as four thousand meters above the sea level and even more. It is a valley of exotic scenery, picturesque view, and sky embracing tops, captivating brooks, alluring greenery, elusive paths and all that a wandering soul looks for.  Pleasing trekking area, a lovely broad road for tourists, convenient traveling and accommodation facilities make Neelum valley a must-see charming landscape.

Best Time To Visit Neelum Valley:

Most of the people are usually interested to know the most suitable time to visit according to Neelum valley weather. The good news is that you can visit this charming valley at any time throughout the year. You just have to manage a vacation from your work routine. Every season is fascinating and captivating in the Neelum Valley. Still, if you wish a discreet instruction to visit the place, it is from April to October. If you long for hiking, you should visit from mid of July to mid-September.

Neelum valley is also known as “the Paradise of Kashmir”.  It was a common belief that it is called Neelum in accordance with a precious stone Neelum, whereas, it was named after its curvy blue river. This is a valley of lush green forests, rivers, and streams. Its fascinating views are the cause of alluring many tourists to visit the valley.

The official language of Neelum Valley Kashmir is Urdu, as the local people can understand and communicate well in Urdu. People speak other local languages as well; Hindko, Pahari, and Kashmiri. You can feel convenient in talking to people in Pushto and Punjabi as well because there are some Pushto and Punjabi people gone there for work.

The lifestyle of the people of Bhimbar, Kotli, and Mirpur is quite simple. They are tradition-loving people who have adhered to their customs over these years when people in other cities are enamored by Western culture. People living here are honest and simple. They have a deep respect for their land and values. The custom and traditions of these areas resemble the neighboring region of Punjab.

Muzaffarabad district is the capital of AJK. It has its distinct civilization; its residents are sharper, skillful and industrious. People are more educated and cultured as compared to other residents of nearby valleys. Some renowned and highly qualified people also belong to this district.

Men and women both wear Shalwar Qameez in Neelum Valleys. In summers, men prefer waistcoats, whereas, jackets and sweaters are worn with Shalwar Qameez in winter. Women are seen in traditional dressing, western dressing is not appreciated in these areas. Some women wear a burka, and others veil their faces or cover their heads with shawls or dupatta. Even the foreigner tourists enjoy wearing local dresses in order to enjoy the company of the local people.

Islam is the major religion of the valley; almost the entire population is Muslim. Most of its residents are not natives rather the majority of the residents of Azad Kashmir are Punjabis by origin. According to the data provided by the Christian community association, the number of Christians residing in this area is 4,500. Most of Christians reside in Bhimber and Muzaffarabad and Mirpur are next in the list. Only a few families of Bahais are said to be living in some rural areas but there is no official data available. An estimated number of twenty to twenty-five thousand Ahmadis is also reported to be residing in Muzaffarabad, Mirpur Bhimber and Kotli.

If you are a foodie, you are going to fall in love with the Kashmiri food delights. You may eat to satiate your stomach but your tongue may crave for more. There is not a single particular dish to represent the taste buds of the valley residents; rather there is a large variety to make you fall in love with Kashmiri cuisine.

Most of Kashmir food is essentially non-vegetarian, influenced by Mughal food traditions. Most of the foods have chicken, fish, and mutton as a main ingredient of dishes. There is a limited number of delicious vegetarian dishes as well. Hot spices like cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, cloves, fennel, and saffron add rich flavor to the food to make you yearn for more.

The signature food of the valley is Rogan e Josh, a treat for meat or lamb lovers. This Mughal originated food a low-fat healthy dish with a mouth-watering aroma of roasted onions, relishes, and yogurt. Matschgand is another food treat for food overs, minced meatballs with spicy mouthwatering gravy can seduce your taste buds to crave for more.

Yogurt lamb curry, Aab gosht, and Goshtaba treat for meat lovers. While, g=vegetarians can relish their taste buds with scrumptious meals like Modur Pulav, Dum Olav, and Lyodur Tschaman. Momos is a popular dish with Tibetan origin added with local tastes can also be a great addition to your menu.

Neelum Valley Weather

Weather conditions of Neelum valley are a great attraction for the tourists and it is the most visited area in Azad Kashmir. The best time to visit this alluring piece of land is between March to October end. You would need to make 3-4 days plan to enjoy this scenic beauty of nature. It is better to avoid your visit in the rainy season and if it rains during your visit you need to be precautious of sliding areas.

Expenses / Travel Guide To Neelum Valley / Routes

The best way to plan your visit is to get an advance reservation in some hotel at least two weeks before to avoid inconvenience especially if you are visiting during the peak season. There is no cellular network coverage forty kilometers ahead of Muzaffarabad.

The best way to visit Neelum Valleys is to avail some Kashmir tour packages for a convenient and less hassle-free trip. Being a tourist you cannot have in-depth knowledge of the area, its facilities, travelling conditions and a lot more. Usually, you can avail these facilities from Islamabad. In case, you have to travel from Lahore, Karachi, or some other area of Pakistan, you are instructed to reach Islamabad to avail of this travelling facility. There are different Kashmir tour packages; the expenses of four or five-day trip with a single room accommodation may cost you sixty thousand rupees or more inclusive of transport facility, driver, and fuel, guide, sight-seeing, comfortable accommodation, and superb services. Foreigner tourists can avail these packages in 300-400$.

You can avail public transportation but they are usually not comfortable enough. You can get a car or jeep on rent still; you may not be able to trace the easier and better roads. You are suggested to avail some package that suits your need. Jammu and Kashmir Tourism offer you to make family visits to different areas of Kutton, Kel, Sharda, Taobat, Halmat, Upper Neelum, Keran, Muzzaffarabad, and Peer Chanasi. If you are interested to have an adventurous trip, you can avail trips to Noori Nar, Chita Katha, and Ratti Gali.

It is suggested that you study Neelum valley map yourself or with the help of some guide and keep them in your record. You will not be able to enjoy cellular communications to get access to online maps in these areas.

Top Places to Visit in Neelum Valley

Arang Kel is a village and most recommended spot to visit in Neelum Valley. It is located on top of the hill at an altitude of 2.554 m near Kel. It is considered to be a heaven on earth by visitors. It is situated nine kilometers away from Kel. The picturesque beauty of this land, misty mornings, snow-covered peaks, rosy dusks, breathtaking sights, winding hiking track, and wonderful cable car add to make it a great attraction for tourists.

Arang Kel is famous for its adventure tour tourism. Paths become slippery and muddy when it rains, you should be careful. You can take walking sticks along. Don’t forget to take water as well.

There is a facility of camps and guests houses but you may not find them up to your expectations. These guest houses also provide food for tourists. But you can choose to ignore some inconvenience to enjoy the breathtaking natural beauty.

Ratti Gali Lake

The splendid and captivating Rati Gali Lake is a famous visiting spot situated almost eighteen kilometers from Dawarain. The best time to visit this place is between May to October. You can find a jeep track to get access to it. You are recommended to take a guide with you. Its marvelous waterfall, picturesque spots, and charming weather make sit a great attraction for the local and foreign tourists.

According to different tourists, despite its bumpy road and risky drive, this place is worth visiting. You will forget the rest when you will view this heavenly magnificent land. Here, weather is not predictable, it can rain any moment or strong winds start blowing.  It is better that you don’t take kids along.

You can ride a jeep on a track left to the Neelum valley; it is a four hours’ drive to the base camp. A steep narrow road gives you chills along with the chilly weather; it is even cold in summers as well due to glaciers. The overwhelming scenic views will keep alluring you despite the risky drive. To move further, you can choose either to trek up or a horse ride to the lake. As the track is quite steep you need to be alert on a horse ride. Once you reach the top, you realize that it was all worth the efforts. If you choose to walk back, it may take you 3-4 hours again to get back. The serenity of Rati Gali Lake is no less than a fairytale; it can prove to be a lifetime experience for you.

Introducing Neelum Valley

Neelum is a beautiful valley containing about 370 small and large villages and near about two hundred thousand population. It starts from Chelhana and goes till Taobut 250 km long. It is named Neelum due to its river, curving like the snake with transparent sky colored water. Like any other population of the subcontinent it has the most heterogeneous population with variety of rituals, customs and traditions. The whole valley is full of beautiful and fascinating sceneries.

Neelum Valley is dipped in beauty Neelum valley about 252 km long and 3620 sq km curvature shaped with majestic pine, fir and deodar trees, lies north-south of Muzaffarabad. This ninety-mile long kingdom of vegetation is ripped apart by the indigo blue Neelum river which flows serpentinely down hills to merge itself into the river Jhelum at Domail. Domail, the confluence of two mighty rivers, presents highly fascinating scene of youthful embrace. This heart-warning spectacle is most soothing to the eye. Neelum Valley is situated to the North & North East of Muzaffarabad and running parallel to the Kaghan Valley.

It is separated from it by snow covered peaks, some over 4000 meters above sea level. Excellent scenic beauty, panoramic view, towering hills on both sides of the noisy Neelum river, lush green forests, enchanting streams, high altitude lakes and attractive surroundings make the valley a dream come true. The swaying lush green forests, snow capped mountains, streams singing songs of joy, and fast flowing river Neelum, all go together to make it naturalist’s wonderland. The area is also ideal for mountain tourism. A part of Nanga Parbat gigantic falls in this area which is dominated by "Sarwaali Peak" (6326 meters) the highest mountain in Azad Kashmir. Moreover like Kaghan Valley it is famous for fishing and angling activities in Neelum river and Jagran Nullah which are stocked with trout fish. Its sole tourist attraction is a seventeen (17) century fort built by the town’s founder, a chief of the Chak tribe named Muzaffar Khan, to ward off the Mughal armies of Emperor Akbar. Neelum valley is an attractive place for tourists due to its famous lush greenery, springs, streams, lakes and hilly and sloppy mountains.

There are two approaches to the valley. One from the Kaghan Valley which is linked with it at two points, the Noori Top (Pass) and the Ratti Gali and many minor Passes. From Dawarrian it takes two days for hiking or riding and night stay at Dharian at 12,000 feet. The second approach is from Muzaffarabad. It is a distance of 55 miles which is jeep able in fair weather. The Neelum meets the Jhelum river at Domali (meeting of the two) on the outskirts of Muzaffarabad city. From Paticka forest one reaches Nosari, 24 miles ahead of Muzaffarabad. Next come Chelhana (height 3,200 feet), Qazi Nag, Barian, Salkhala, Jura, Kundalshahi, Authmuqam on this road.

Some of its famous places like Shounter Pass, Chita Khata, Ratti Gali, Baboon, Noori Top, Sharda, Kel, Surgon and many more are mentioned by famous tourists like Mustansar Hussain Tararr, Ibn-e-Batota etc. Tararr even wrote a travelogue, Ratti Gali after visiting this place.

Traveling during May to October from the scorching heat of plains to the high land basin of Neelum Valley is indeed an escape from hell inferno to the cold breezes of paradise. The temperature remains in between 65°F to 90° F during the summer. The upper portion of the area normally receives first snow fall in the month of October and at some times even during September.

The valley, starting from Muzaffarabad, the capital of Azad Kashmir, is about 150 miles long. The first district of Neelum is Chelhana about 43 km from Muzaffarabad just after crossing the Nosari Bridge by the route of Neelum road. It lies on both sides of the river Neelum. The geographical features enhance the natural beauty of the Valley. Its elevation, a mere 2,000 feet at the start, gradually rises till it attains a respectable height of 8,000 feet. On both sides there are high mountains and peaks. Nearly all the forest wealth of Azad Kashmir is to be found in this part of the State.

Popular Attractions

The starting point of district Neelum about 43 km from Muzaffarabad just after crossing the Nosari bridge by the route of Neelum road. It is famous for its marble mines, from where marble is transported to Muzaffarabad and cities of Pakistan.  Here is also a crossing point where people on both sides of LOC meet there relatives by crossing the bridge twice in a month. This meeting is possible after a long documentary process which is started with the consensus of both sides governments after the earth quack of 2005. On the opposite side of Chelhana is Tetwal under Indian occupation. Kerna the famous historical place is near Tetwal which is also told the capital city of ancient Kashmir by folks and even historians.

From here to Kundalshahi there are many small and large villages on the both sides of Neelum River, about 18 km forward is a link road Leswa bypass that leads to the top Chugali and many more beautiful mountains. Important stations in the way from Chelhana to Kundalshahi are Barian, Bandi, Leswa, Mirpura, Jura, Slampura and Chembher.

About 60 kilometer from Muzaffarabad a small village consisting 3000 population, first main market after entering District Neelum, Jura is a village with scattered population on both side of river. It is the beginning point for Leswa bypass road and for mountain villages like Kutha Chugali and Chunj Top.  For scenic point of view Nakka, Baandi and Leswa are place worth to visit.

Kundalshahi

Kundalshahi is 74 km from Muzaffarabad and about 5 kilometers from Authmuqam, another midway station, and a small commercial centre. In Authmuqam and Kundalshahi almost all basic necessities are available in the local market. Being a commercial centre it is congested and over crowded. Jagran stream joins the Neelum river here which has a glass light clean water and a suitable habitation for trout fish. A small hydro electric power is installed on this stream in Kundalshahi which provide electricity to Kundalshahi and Authmuqam. From Kundalshahi a link road leads to Kutton, Jagran and other tops. At the end of Jagran hilly tops reflect amazing scenes and are worth to see. Kiyan Shareef is an adjacent village that has reputation as land of holy saints. And annually Urs ceremonies are celebrated which attracted a large number of devotees from Kashmir and from Pakistan. A Sherries is there for devotees.

Kutton and Jagran

The picturesque Kutton and Jagran are best to visit during April to October. Nestled in the lower part of Neelum valley, the picturesque "Jagran" is its inseparable part. Jagran Nullah (stream) is indispensable and plays pivotal role in the formation of its landscape beauty and charm which reveals the richness of the area. The area is 16 kilometers from Kundalshahi and is accessible by road. For the convenience of tourists, AJK tourism Department has constructed a rest house here. A mega hydro electric project is installed here that produce electricity to the state.  A long a beautiful series of Himalayas mountain starts from here to Kaghan, Skardu and Chillas.

In Jagran places like Kutton, Thunian, Ghansee and Pattlian Sar are worth-seeing and inviting everyone to visit and enjoy. Jagran is ideal for mountaineers and takers too. Here the mountains are ranging from 4000 feet to 1400 feet above sea level. The ever green forests are stretched in the far flung lush green plateaus with abundance of wildlife.

On the side lane of the impressive tourists resort the ever flowing greenish and surf gushing waters of Jagran Nullah add to its peculiar character. Jagran Nullah, rushing downwards all along the tall grooves of trees is almost small river. Surrounded by scintillating beauty under the shades of the majestic snow-clad mountains the river is freezing cold. The snowmelt of these sky heights named "Jagran Nullah" is also know for rout fishing attracting angles all over the seasons.

Not more than 3 kilometers from Kundalshahi across the river Neelum one can enjoy the lovely place Salkhala. A Trout hatchery has been established by the Azad Kashmir Fisheries Department. A reasonable accommodation facility is available here.

Kutha Peran and Meengal

About 8 km forward from Kundalshahi just before entering Authmuqam a jeep able road lead to this series of small villages.  Meengal and Kalkore about 1580 meter from sea level are the last villages of this series. A stream which is main source of water for cultivation for Authmuqam and for this village is flowing mid of the whole these village and falls in river Neelum at the place of Shahkot. Area is distinguishable for its rich scenic beauty, frequent waterfalls, typical life style, special cultivations and production of pottery.

Authmuqam is situation at 10 kilometers from Kundalshahi is the Sub Divisional Headquarter of the area. It contains all the civic services to a certain extent like hospital, post office, bank, a telephone exchange and a few small bazaars. If you need anything then you must buy it from here because this is the last stop where you can find reasonable commodities in quantity as well as in quality. Apart from the fact that this valley town is very unique in its beauty with respect to the other places we had yet visited, it is also significant as it marks the beginning of control line with Indian Held Kashmir in Neelum. It is another important station and well populated city in the valley. Having an altitude of about 1371 meters above sea level is located at a distance of 80 Kms from Muzaffarabad is connected by Neelum road. It is named Authmuqam because it is 8th station from Muzaffarabad to upper valley. Most people are government employees, rest are in different fields. A large number of government and private institution is working here including one high standard private and two government colleges. From here upwards emerges typical Kashmiri living pattern with houses built of wooden logs, most of them double storied. Authmuqam in its geographical structure is a cup like valley with green hills on the four sides. Hiking tracks for surrounding mountains are traced by peoples and tourists.

Neelum (Karen)

At a distance of about 9 Kms from Authmuqam, Neelum opposite to the Karen village (Indian occupied Kashmir) having an altitude of 1524 meters above sea level is very popular among tourists. A tourist rest souse run by AJK tourism department is situated on the bank of River.  Due to its importance from tourism point of view, AJK tourism department is giving special attention to it. From Karen a link road leads to Neelum which is one of the most beautiful villages of Neelum Valley. A zoo and park is under construction, Neelum is also accessible via Karen By-pass starts from Authmuqam.

It is situated, about 25km from Authmuqam the district headquarter at attitude of about 1645 meters. Nagdar is famous for its scattered population on hilly grooves. It is famous for fine quality bean crop which is cultivated at a large land and supplies to the whole valley and out of the valley. Like Kutha Peran this whole series of village is situated on the both side of Nullah Nagdar and a lot of water mills are constructed on it for grinding Maize which is its major crop. Another thing is that most of people are attached with teaching profession.

Dawarrian at a distance of 13 Km from Neelum at an altitude of 1615 meters is surrounded by mountains full of conifer trees. Over here a mule-track up to Ratti Gali Pass (4140 meters), about 30 Kms toward west congest the Neelum and Kaghan Valleys. The pride of valley is the large fresh water lake nestled in the mountains. Vast plain is surrounded by the small yet beautiful lake and gushing water.

This place is situated about 32 kilometers forward from Authmuqam at an altitude of about 1560 meters. It is also a beautiful place of the both side of Neelum river. Potatoes are the major production of this area. Most people are dependent on their own cultivated sources and a large number is also associated with government and private jobs.

The most picturesque place in Neelum Valley is Sharda it is located at a distance of 136 kilometers from Muzaffarabad and 30 Km from Dawarrian. Sharda is one of the most beautiful places with its lush green planes, smooth flowing river which frozes in sever cold season and serves as passage for people of both sides of the river. This place from the point of view of tourists is so attractive and captivating that they get their money’s worth when they spend a few days here in their sojourn amidst nature. In Sharda one also finds ruins of an old place of learning. The presence of these ruins lends Sharda is a historical background providing special attraction for the people interested in archaeology and history. The most important site of Sharda is its haunted university remains which are said remains of a great university of the Asia in Buddhist era. This university was the center of knowledge for the people of China, East and Central Asia. It remained the attractive place for knowledge seeker for a long time that came by the route of Jammu instead of Muzaffarabad. But due to some unknown major accident this university lost its light and existence and vanished completely from the land and even from the history, alongside the university the remains of a fort.

This place is situated 90 km from Authmuqam and 19 kilometers journey from Sharda, which is at the height of 2097 meters above sea level. This is another picturesque place in the Neelum Valley. The Shounter Nullah joins river Neelum at this place and leads to Gilgit Agency over the Shounter (4420 meter above sea level). Buses run daily on this route in good weather. Kel is also a base camp of mountaineering activities up to Sarawaali Peak 6326 meters above sea level and "Sarawaali Glacier" which are said to be the highest peak and biggest glacier of Azad Kashmir. Rest Houses facilities are available. Form Kel a long track goes towards Nanga Parbat over the 4420 meters Shounter Gali.

This village is situated 38 kilometers from Kel. From Kel to forward jeep able road is available for Halmet, the valley above the Kel is also called Grace valley with its harsh and frozen weather in winter season, people have a typical life style. A tourist rest house had been constructed a Halmet to provide accommodation facilities to the visitors. Halmet has fascinating beautiful scenes yet unexplored. Janwai, Phulawai, Sardari and Halmet are the most beautiful places around here.

The last station of Neelum Valley is Taobut and end point of Pak beauty in Kashmir. It has a sever season and heavy snow in winter, and winter season continue  about 6 months starting from October to April end. Often there are no signs of path due to land sliding and flooded water streams. In summer it is a worth place for tourist to visit.

Trekking in Neelum Valley

Neelum Valley provides a variety of treks at varying altitudes durations, ranging from a day to a week via from Dawarrian or Sharda to Ratti Gali with duration of 3 days, reaching a maximum altitude of 4140 meters and the trek can be extended to the Kaghan Valley by crossing the Ratti Gali Pass. Near the pass one can see an ideal natural lake "Ratti Gali" at an altitude of 3832 meters and other five little lakes around them. A challenging trek of a week’s duration is from Kel to Astor via Shounter Gali, reaching a maximum altitude of 4260 meters.

The area is well connected by road, more than half of it from Muzaffarabad is black topped, while remaining is all weather (un-metalled), which is being metalled. A regular bus service up to Kel is available. However you can drive in your own car up to Dawarrian from there onwards you have to switch over to Jeeps for your drive.
