Rushing a sorority and confused about what to put on your sorority rush resume? You’re not alone! Each year, hundreds of thousands of girls decide to embark on this rite of passage in many American college girl’s lives, but where should they start? Girls take it upon themselves to learn about how they can become the picture perfect sorority girl , from taking notes on YouTube videos to hiring personal sorority rush consultants. And one thing’s for sure: Many schools require potential new members (PNMs) to have a resume to share with the houses they’re rushing.

As a fellow sorority girl, when I first embarked on my rush journey, I was so confused on where to start. There isn’t a clear starting point, and no to-do list to check off to make sure that you’ll get into your top house. From one sorority girl to another, it’s necessary to have a resume that highlights all of your accomplishments, ranging from community service to teamwork. Below is how to break down your resume to ensure that you present yourself to your future sisterhood the best that you possibly can.

The header of your resume gives the reader general information about you. With sorority resumes, you want to make sure that you stand out, so you can choose a pretty font (or even better, a template from Canva or Novoresume ) to give it that extra oomph. Make sure your header includes your name, address, phone number, and email address.

This section is pretty straightforward. Make sure to put both your weighted and unweighted GPA from high school and — if you can — your current college GPA (if you are not rushing the fall semester of your freshman year). Also make sure to include your high school information and GPA, your SAT and ACT scores, as well as any classes you took in high school for college credit.

This section is also very straightforward. If you have any Greek affiliations — whether one of your siblings or parents were in the sorority — put note of it at the bottom. Personal information should also include your birthday, the college you’re attending and graduation year, plus your intended major.

The Honors and Awards section highlights what makes you special! Include any awards that you feel would make you stand out. Leadership roles are extremely important to showcase to sororities. When in a sorority, every member has the opportunity to hold a leadership position if they choose. When showing that you take leadership in organizations that you are passionate about, sororities will keep you in mind. These awards and positions should only be from high school and onward. Include a short description of the award or honor, and the year that it was awarded.

These sections are not always needed, but are beneficial when adding them to your resumes so that sororities can see what you are interested in and add some ~spice~.

Of course, before you’re actually a full-fledged sorority member, you’re going to need to go through rush first.  

If you’ve never rushed before, it can be tricky figuring out some of the etiquette, as well as how to stand out and make a positive name for yourself. This is the earliest impression you’ll be able to make on your (potential future) sorority sisters, so it can feel pretty daunting going in. After all, first impressions aren’t something that can be redone—this can add a lot of pressure and make rushing an even scarier prospect.  

Whenever you know what to expect, however, rushing won’t seem so frightening. So, instead of blindly heading into rush, it’s a wise idea to brush up on some of the basics. A Guide to Standing Out in Sorority Recruitment

We get it—figuring out what to say can be scary, and the idea of saying the “wrong” thing is something that makes many prospective sisters uneasy. However, in reality, it isn’t that difficult to say the “right” thing during recruitment. Why? Well, this is partly because there is no specific right thing to say. Instead, there are some guidelines that you should probably abide by whenever you’re talking to current sorority members during rush.

One of the most important tenets? Be open and honest with everyone around you. This might seem obvious, but some of the time, people feel like they have to put on a front. Some sisters-to-be will go out of their way to create (what they believe to be) a “perfect” version of themselves, free of uncertainties. Don’t try to fit into a sorority environment that doesn’t come naturally to you. Instead, you should be seeking out the sorority where you genuinely feel that you fit in without having to change who you are.

If you could really see yourself joining a particular sorority, you should voice this opinion openly. Or, if you were already dropped by your number one pick, don’t be afraid to let other sorority members know about this. After all, some of them could also have been dropped in the past, and they may know precisely what you’re going through. This isn’t a situation that you should ever feel the need to hide, just because the sorority you’re currently speaking to wasn’t your original number one pick. Sometimes people get dropped, and your future sorority sisters will understand that.  

On that note, even if you were dropped from your top pick, make sure to keep an open mind —and let this show in your conversations with other sorority members. Try not to come off as bitter or standoffish if you ever find yourself in this situation. Instead, just try to stay in the moment at all times. Try to avoid “what if” thinking, as this can negatively impact your interactions with other sorority sisters.

In a similar vein, you should be asking questions to your potential sorority sisters. Not only will this give you better insight into potential organizations, but also, it will allow you to make a positive impression on current members. When you engage and ask questions, you’re showing that you have a genuine interest in the organization. This is something that current sorority sisters love to see during rush.

Why did you, personally, choose to join this sorority  , does this sorority offer sisterhood events to its members, do you have a favorite memory since joining your sorority, has being in a sorority changed your overall experience in college how so.

Of course, if you think of any other questions that interest you, feel free to ask those! This is far from an exhaustive list. Try to feel out the conversation and figure out what you’d like to know about the sorority in question. There’s a good chance that the questions you ask one sorority aren’t going to be identical to what you ask another sorority—that’s perfectly okay.  

Also, make sure that you’re prioritizing whatever is essential to you. Everyone joins a sorority for a different reason, and everyone approaches rush with a different level of sorority knowledge. No matter who you are or where you’re coming from, ask the questions that make the most sense, based upon your own priorities. In fact, asking specific (rather than very general) questions can make an even more substantial impact on the sorority members you’re speaking to. When you ask detailed or specific questions, it’s even more apparent that you have a genuine interest in joining—this sort of interest is guaranteed to stand out during recruitment.

Dress to Impress

If you’re currently stressing over what to wear during recruitment events, then you’re not alone. Obviously, there’s no perfect how-to guide on how you should be dressing during recruitment—everyone has their own sense of style, and this isn’t something that you should be sacrificing for the sake of conformity. In fact, whenever you attempt to conform in this way, there’s less of a chance that you’ll stand out to current sorority sisters.  

When you’re figuring out your recruitment outfits, keep this idea in mind: It should be evident that you’re putting effort and thought into your appearance, whatever way this looks for you. When you throw on some sweatpants and a T-shirt, you aren’t showing sorority members that they’re worth your time and effort. This doesn’t mean that you have to dress glamorously and wear a full face of makeup each and every day—instead, find a comfortable middle ground. Dress nicely, but also comfortably. Let your future sisters get a good sense of your unique style, as well.

Basically, show everyone that you take recruitment seriously while also letting them see your personal sense of style.

Sanctions Policy

Etsy provides a direct connection between buyers and sellers around the world. When you use Etsy’s services (we’ll refer to Etsy.com, Pattern by Etsy, our mobile apps, and other services as our “Services”), you are responsible for complying with this policy, regardless of your location.

In order to protect our community and marketplace, Etsy takes steps to ensure compliance with sanctions programs. What are Sorority Letters of Recommendation / Letters of Support?

Hi girls! It’s time to address some of the most common questions moms and PNMs ask when it comes to sorority rush: What are Letters of Recommendation, Letters of Support, and Recruitment Information Forms?

This is part one of rush prep, and part of what we like to call your “pre-recruitment materials.”

If you’re beginning the sorority recruitment process, you likely have learned your university’s rush process necessitates one or more of these items listed above. Other common terms include LOR, RIF, LOS, or Rec Letter.

For any school with a competitive recruitment process, these are a must!

Let’s break it down:

Recruitment Information Form (abbreviation = RIF) – A Recruitment Information Form is just that: a form. This fill-in-the-blank form is found on the sorority’s national website, typically in a members-only section that requires a sorority alumna to log in to access and complete them on a PNM’s* behalf. They’re fairly standardized, but questions do vary from sorority to sorority. Standard questions include requesting a PNM’s SAT/ACT score, high school GPA, class ranking, family or legacy information, and information on high school activities/volunteer work. Most RIF forms also provide the opportunity for the alumna to attach and submit a PNM’s social resume as well as one or more photos.

FYI – There are many, many different names for these forms, and it varies by sorority. Some other common names are Membership Information Sheet (MIS), Potential Member Recommendation (PMR), Sponsor Form, and Rec Letter, to name a few. They all mean the same thing. It’s the form on the sorority’s national website.

*PNM = potential new member (this is what sororities call rushees)

Letter of Recommendation (abbreviation = LOR, also called a Rec Letter) – A Letter of Recommendation refers to a personal letter of endorsement an alumna can write.  This letter is often turned in alongside a Recruitment Information Form (above). Most sorority Recruitment Information Forms (RIFs) have an option to turn one in, but some don’t. We always recommend an alumna completes and submits a Rec Letter alongside her RIF, when possible, as it helps the sorority get to know more about that PNM.

Letter of Support (abbreviation = LOS) – This is very similar to a Letter of Recommendation, in that it’s also a personal letter endorsing a PNM for membership.  A Letter of Support should be submitted in addition to the Letter of Recommendation, not in lieu of a Letter of Rec / RIF.  Letters of Support can also be submitted differently than Letters of Recommendation. Worth mentioning, Letters of Support are not always necessary / accepted at all schools.

Sorority Recruitment Packet – In order for an alumna to complete one of the items above on your behalf, it’s super helpful to provide her with a little more information about yourself.  The best way for a PNM to do this is by creating a social or “rush resume.” Don’t forget – she also needs a resume and photos to submit with the RIF on your behalf.

A sorority recruitment packet contains the following digital assets: a rush resume, several professional photos of yourself, and a cover letter + thank you. It’s your way of packaging everything together and presenting it to an alumna in one neat little package, helping her help you.

Bonus Question: When are they due?

Different schools and various sororities have varying deadlines, but as a general rule of thumb: the earlier you get these turned in, the better.

For universities with a competitive fall sorority recruitment, your daughter’s Letters of Recommendation (LORs) and Recommendation Information Forms (RIFs) should be completed and turned in by May for the very best results.

For schools with a competitive spring sorority recruitment (aka deferred sorority recruitment), Letters of Recommendation / RIFs can (and should) be turned in by May as well (yes – this surprises a lot of families).

Some universities will say Recs / RIFs are not required for recruitment, or that it’s the sorority’s obligation to provide one for PNMs. Ignore this! Hundreds of other PNMs know to turn theirs in, and it puts you at a significant advantage during recruitment to do so. Submitting your pre-recruitment materials is of the best ways to get on a sorority’s radar long before formal recruitment begins.

There you go! We hope this clears up some of the confusion on these rush terms as you begin to learn about the recruitment process.

How to Write a Cover Letter for Sorority Recruitment

We've all heard it before—"You'll never get a second chance to make a first impression." And that's exactly why we're such advocates of including a cover letter with each and every  sorority packet  you send out the door! 

In addition to being a polite and professional inclusion, your cover letter is an excellent chance for you to share important information with the women completing a RIF and LOS on your behalf. With that said, let's break down the key components of a stellar sorority cover letter!

FIRST THINGS FIRST

Your cover letter should be addressed to the women completing your recommendations, NOT the sorority houses those recommendations will be forwarded on to. The purpose of a cover letter is to introduce yourself, share the "why" behind your decision to go through the sorority recruitment process, and communicate important notes and/or deadlines. 

SECTION ONE: SALUTATION AND GREETING

Use the first paragraph of your cover letter to introduce yourself and give thanks. The woman writing your recommendation is taking time out of her day to make you sound amazing—let her know how much that means to you! For example:

"I cannot thank you enough for taking the time to complete a recommendation on my behalf! I am so excited to be attending [University] this fall, and intend to pursue a major in [Intended Field of Study]."

SECTION TWO: IMPORTANT DETAILS

In the second paragraph of your cover letter, give an overview of the items included with your sorority packet. (i.e.“Enclosed you will find a copy of my resume and high school academic information, a selection of photos, and a pre-addressed, stamped envelope.")

If there is a specific submission deadline that your letter-writer should be aware of, let her know by including the exact date she will need to submit your materials by. Last but not least, if any of your academic information has changed or if you have received new honors/awards since printing your resume, you will want to specifically note that information in your cover letter. You can do this like so:

"Please note that the GPA listed on my resume is no longer accurate. After receiving my final grades this summer, my cumulative GPA is a 3.7—if you would please include this updated information as part of your recommendation, I would be so grateful!" 

SECTION THREE: CLOSING REMARKS AND CONTACT INFORMATION

Use the last section of your cover letter to reiterate your thanks. If you haven't done so already, share a reason why you're looking forward to joining a sorority during college. Finally, don't forget to include a signature line that contains your name, phone number, and email address. Let your letter-writer know that she is welcome to contact you if she has any additional questions after reviewing your information!

RUSH 101: PERFECTING YOUR RESUME

Welcome back to Love, Me Photography’s Rush 101 series! We’re continuing our conversation about all things sorority recruitment with today’s post on creating the perfect resume. If you’re new to the blog and feeling a little overwhelmed by all the Alpha-Delta-Kappa-Panhellenic terminology, be sure to swing by the first installment of our series: The Recruitment Information Packet .  All set? Let’s dive right in by breaking down a standard resume section by section!

  • Home Number
  • Cell Number

Note:  Put your name front and center at the top of your resume and make sure that it stands out. This can be accomplished by bolding your name, increasing the font size, or both! You can also get creative with your font style, but remember that readability is the most important thing. You don’t want everyone calling you Kelly if your name is actually Kylie. Just saying. Include the rest of your information (i.e. your name, address, home and cell number, and email) in a single line right below.

SECTION 1: EDUCATION  

  • Graduating High School [include address]
  • Graduation Date
  • GPA [weighted and un-weighted]
  • Dual Credit/AP Courses
  • ACT/SAT Scores  

Note: Keep this section (and the next one) simple by just entering the necessary data. No explanations required!

SECTION 2: PERSONAL INFORMATION

  • Date of Birth
  • College Attending + Class [example: University of Texas, Class of 2021]
  • Intended Major [if known]
  • Mother [include her married and maiden name, college, degree, and occupation]
  • Father [include his name, college, degree, and occupation]

SECTION 3: HONORS AND AWARDS  

Example: Cheerleader of the Year (12)—Nominated by my cheerleading coach and the school’s Athletic Director.  

Note: Go on girl, show off all that hard work! DO include every scholastic and extracurricular achievement you can think of this side of high school along with a short description and the year the award was received. DON’T dig back into the elementary school archives. (Even though I personally think it’s amazing that you won the title of “fastest girl” in the fourth grade, it probably won’t come up in conversation during any of your sorority house visits.)

SECTION 4: LEADERSHIP ROLES  (*This section can also be combined with section 3 if desired)

Example: Features Editor, Mane Event Newspaper (12)—Wrote copy for Features section of school newspaper, sold ads to local businesses, and edited classmates’ work prior to publication.

Note: Leadership roles are so(ooo) important to include on your resume. As a member of a sorority, you’ll have the opportunity to lead philanthropy events, plan mixers with other Greek groups, and so much more—current members want to know that you’re up to the task of stepping into a leadership position within the chapter one day!

SECTION 5: ACTIVITIES + INTERESTS  

  • Church Youth Group
  • Fashion Blogging
  • Newspaper Reporting
  • French Club
  • Club Soccer

SECTION 6: COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT  

  • Boys and Girls Club Volunteer
  • Elementary School Tutor
  • Volunteer at Children’s Medical Center— Helped children create crafts on weekends and visited with patients.

Note: Descriptions aren’t always necessary for Section 6 and Section 7. Only include them if you feel that an activity or interest requires a little extra context.

SECTION 7: EMPLOYMENT  

Example: Bob’s Snow Cone Stand (Grades 8-12)— Started as assistant and worked up to Head Manager by end of senior year.

Note: Don’t forget to include the length of time you’ve worked for each employer + a brief description. PS: Yes, babysitting counts!

SECTION 8: GREEK AFFILIATIONS  

Jane Doe, Mother: Delta Gamma, Eta Alpha Chapter, Pepperdine University ‘88

Jim Doe, Father: Delta Sigma Phi, Lambda Chapter, North Carolina State ‘87

Jenna Doe, Sister: Delta Delta Delta, Beta Phi Chapter, University of Oklahoma ‘15

Jamie Doe, Grandmother : Kappa Kappa Gamma, Sigma Chapter, Texas Tech University ‘64

Note: Sororities will look at this section to find out if you’re a legacy (i.e., if you have family ties to one or more sorority houses). Be sure to include each member of your family’s graduating college, sorority or fraternity, chapter name (if you know it), and pledge year.

This post has helped me so much with knowing what to put on a resume! Sadly in high school I never did community service even though I always wanted to. Is this a deal breaker for most sororities or is it okay because I am very interested in doing it?? Also what should I put on my resume for that or should I just leave that off of it?

Hi Kenzie, I am just now seeing your comment…so glad to hear that the post was helpful for you! I don’t think it’s a deal-breaker at all. In fact, you could use this as a great talking point during recruitment week. All sororities have a specific philanthropy that they work with, so I think it would be very well received if you mentioned that you are really looking forward to getting involved with serving the community through a sorority! Since you don’t have any experience as of now, just leave that section off of your resume. I hope this helps!

List your current university, the GPA you’ll be ending the year with, and any campus involvements, clubs, or volunteer organizations you have worked with prior to your transfer. London travel news LIVE: Elizabeth line suspension hits rush-hour commuters as Abbey Wood-Paddington trains resume

Elizabeth line commuters suffered early-morning chaos on Wednesday as the entire Abbey Wood-Paddington section was suspended due to an electricity supply failure.

National Rail reported that the disruption was expected to continue until 9am.

It later said that while the incident had been “resolved”, disruption was expected to continue. However it appears to be back up and running again, with TfL only reporting minor delays as of 9.25am.

Commuters have turned to X to vented their anger about the latest breakdown. One wrote: “Genuinely think the Elizabeth line would go down less if they made it out of papier mâché. This is a joke.”

Meanwhile severe delays were earlier reported on the Piccadilly line between Cockfosters and Acton Town westbound only, and between Acton Town and Heathrow Terminals following the late finish of engineering work.

A crash between a lorry and a van on the A282 near the Dartford Crossing caused the M25 motorway to be shut with huge tailbacks.

Air Ambulance lands on A282 after crash

More now on the crash that has closed the M25.

An air ambulance was seen landing on the motorway on the A282 with National Highways warning of “severe delays”.

A separate report on the crash is here.

M25 closed due to serious collision

The M25 is closed clockwise between Junction 30 Purfleet-on-Thames and the A282 Junction 2 Dartford due to a serious collision, according to National Highways South East.

There are 90 minute delays and approximately seven miles of congestion southbound, and 60 min delays and tailbacks of about five miles north from the M25 Junction 3, it said.

Fault with signals at Horsham disrupts all rail lines towards London

A fault with the signalling system at Horsham has disrupted all lines towards London, Network Rail said.

Southern and Thameslink services towards Three Bridges, Gatwick Airport and the capital are expected to be delayed until 6.30pm.

“There may also be short-notice cancellations and alterations to services. Some services may be diverted or will terminate and restart at a different station,” the operator said.

“Please delay travelling until later today.

“If you do travel now you will need to use an alternative route to complete your journey.

“Your journey is likely to take at least an extra 30 minutes this evening.”

Trains from Horsham to Dorking, are not affected by this incident and passengers will not need an alternative route.

Obstruction causes disruption between Stratford and Romford

An obstruction on the track between Stratford and Romford is causing disruption to journeys between both stations.

As a result, trains may be cancelled, delayed by up to 20 minutes or revised.

“We anticipate disruption will continue 5.30pm,” Network Rail said.

Delays between Swanley and Sevenoaks due to signal fault

A fault with the signalling system in the Otford area is causing disruption to journeys.

As a result, trains from Swanley and Sevenoaks may be delayed by up to 15 minutes.

“Engineers are on site, however delays are expected in the area until this issue is fixed. This is expected until 6pm,” Network Rail said.

Trains from London Marylebone to Aylesbury Vale Parkway axed

A signalling system fault means trains running between London Marylebone and Aylesbury Vale Parkway may terminate at Aylesbury,.

You've written the perfect resume and tailored it to the role you're aspiring to. What should you do next? A few years back, you'd have printed it off on some quality paper, addressed an envelope in your best handwriting, posted it off, and settled in to wait for a response. These days, though, it's more common to email your resume. It's faster, it's more professional, and it's easier to share a file than a printout.

But if you're going to email your resume, what should you say? Should you attach a cover letter? How much detail should you include? 

So many questions!

Should I email my resume?

Yes! It's absolutely fine to email your resume when you apply for a job. In fact, it's usually preferred to printed correspondence these days. Of course, the most important point is that you should follow the instructions on the job posting. If it requests a printed resume or a resume uploaded via an online portal, you should definitely apply in line with those instructions. However, if there are no specific instructions, an email application is advisable. Just make sure you're addressing it to the right person!

General rules for emailing your resume

Before we get into the specifics, let's refresh on some general guidelines for emailing your resume to a company. After all, first impressions count, so using proper email etiquette is important.

Use a professional email address. “ HotLips69@...” may have seemed cool and funny when you set up the account, but does it really convey that you're a credible professional? If necessary, set up a new email account to use for job applications – and remember to check it regularly for responses!

Add a clear subject line. Make the point of your email clear with a logical  subject line – you could include the job title of the vacancy you're applying for, for example, or refer to the fact that the email is a job application or resume.

Choose a professional greeting. Think “Dear [name],” or even just “[name],” rather than “Hiya” or “Greetings.” While email is less formal than a letter, you still need to keep the tone professional.

Be concise. Short,  snappy paragraphs are easier to read on a screen, and no one wants to trudge through pages of waffle to find the information they need. Respect the reader's time by keeping it simple.

Add a formal sign-off. A version of “thank you” and your name is sufficient – you may also want to add your professional title, a contact number, and a link to your portfolio if you have one.

Don't forget the attachments! Make sure that you've actually attached your resume (and your cover letter, if required). Ensure they have sensible file names, too: “Jay Miller – Resume” or “J Miller – Sales Executive Resume” is more professional and easier to retrieve than something like “JM 010224 v3” or simply “Resume.” Also, double-check the file type that you're sending – check out our article  Word vs PDF  if you're not sure.

Why you're emailing

Your reader may have a ton of open vacancies and is likely to receive many resumes for each one. Make their life easier by clearly stating the role you're interested in applying for. If you have a reference number for the vacancy, you can include that too.

Your elevator pitch

Briefly explain who you are , what you do, and why you're the right person for the open role. This doesn't need to take up a lot of space or be very detailed – the key thing here is to be convincing enough for them to want to open your resume document to find out more. Include whatever information is most pertinent to the role – that could be your academic qualifications, your industry experience, awards and accolades, or particular skills. Should you attach a cover letter when emailing a resume?

Now we've covered what to say when emailing a resume, it's time to consider the cover letter. As you can see, we recommend that the body of the email be kept short and concise. If you feel the need to include more detail, you can consider attaching a cover letter as well as a resume. There's no obligation to do this unless a letter is specifically requested as part of the application instructions, but it does give you the opportunity to expand on key points of interest.

How long does it take to hear back after emailing a resume?

Don't panic if you don't hear back immediately! While email is a speedy way to apply, recruiters and hiring managers receive many resumes for every open role and need time to sift through them, create shortlists, and schedule interviews. That said, certain recruiters have a reputation for ghosting unsuitable candidates, or your application may simply have been overlooked, so there's no harm in following up after a week or two if you haven't heard anything.
