'Laththi' movie review: Interesting ideas get lathi-charged in this actioner

A still from the film ‘Laththi’ starring Vishal. (Photo | YouTube screengrab)

Debutant Vinoth Kumar’s Laththi has a hero-elevation line said by a bad guy that goes: "Avan namba kita maatala da, namba dhaan avan kita maati irukom!” We have heard this a thousand times already, but here, the dialogue isn't so out of place because the story is of Muruganandham (Vishal), a lone policeman who takes on an army of goons.

While Kaththi’s Kathiresan used the help of a friend and a few coins to face 50 men, Muruganandham takes the game a level higher by increasing the body count to over 100, all alone. What’s his weapon though? The entire building, it seems.

The protagonist hides his weapons in several locations in the building and they range from an iron baseball bat, hand grenade to a water sprinkler-controlled machine gun! Oh, there is a catch. Muruganandham’s sick son is also stuck in the same building and the hero has to ensure the latter's safety. Everything points at a fun, engaging action-thriller on paper, but the end result is quite the opposite. Ads by

The bad men in the film are a problem. While Sunny PN’s Sura is a maniac who stops his traitor from getting electrocuted only to kill him with a less painful gunshot, Ramana’s Vellai, is a whole new level of bizarre He wears a yellow polythene bag on his face for a major part of the film, as a reminder to avenge the hero. Laththi is a treasure trove for such unintentionally funny content.

During one of the initial scenes, Sura asks his allies to list the crimes committed by his son. For some strange reason, the goons start performing a clumsy mime in an attempt to recreate the crimes, without just listing them out. Many such 'innovative' ideas come across as silly humour.

Laththi relies on its lead actort o do much of the heavy-lifting. However, Vishal falls terribly short despite showing effort--especially his Moondram Pirai-esque act in the climax that only ends up highlighting his limitations as a performer. Sunainaa is probably the only actor who doesn’t give in to the over-the-top tone of the film. She delivers a sensible performance as a doting mother and wife.

Right from the title announcement, it was clear that the film would be about a laththi-happy policeman, and the protagonist tries to do justice to the title by charging at way too many people on screen. But the film doesn’t take a clear stand on police brutality. Though there are stretches where Muruganandham dreads executing custodial violence, and mouths preachy dialogues like, “Kandika dhaan na adikanum, dhandika illa!” you also learn that he has always enjoyed beating the criminals to a pulp.

The much-hyped fight sequences of this film feel heavily rushed and the exciting weapon-reveal sequence too is force-fit into a background song. Though Laththi tries hard to be an edge-of-the-seat thriller, it's not a good sign that you're laughing for most of it.

LATHTHI MOVIE REVIEW CLICK TO RATE THE MOVIE

Laththi is an action drama film written and directed by Vinoth Kumar, and produced by Ramana and Nandha under the banner Rana Productions. The film has Vishal and Sunainaa in the lead roles while Ramana, Munishkanth, Prabhu, and others in supporting roles. Yuvan Shankar Raja has composed the music while Balasubramaniem and Balakrishna Thota are the cinematographers.

Muruganantham (Vishal) is a constable who leads a simple life with simple ambitions. He is termed as a Laththi specialist by his superiors, and a lockup torture results in him getting suspended for an year. Upon joining back, he gets into a tussle with Vella (Ramana), the son of a rowdy with influential political contacts. How does Muruganandham, a mere constable, save his family and defeat Vellai? That is what Laththi is all about.

Laththi starts off with clear, simple intentions. The initial sequences used to establish Muruganantham's love for his family are beautiful, and have its heart at the right place. Even though the visuals are shaky, it doesn't disturb us much. The film wants to stay grounded and it shows.

The issues for Laththi begin in the second half where the film shifts to almost a superhero mode. This means, the protagonist who, so far seemed to be an innocent man, suddenly takes heavy blows to his body, and fights against 100+ people at the same time. This tonal shift doesn't work out.

The action sequences, especially the 45-minute sequence in the construction site in the second half are well choreographed, and keep you gripped, but once the film enters into the 'superhero mode', we stop rooting for the lead and his family. The emotional connection gets lost. There are also plenty of logical loopholes that are glaring.

Vishal is rusty in a few scenes, but generally scores well with his performance. One scene to sample what a good actor he is, comes at the climax when he searches for his son. It is a scene that deserves a lot of praise for his performance. The rest of the cast are okay.

Technically, Yuvan's score works at a few places but the shaky' camera handheld shots in some fights don't help the film's cause. Overall, Laththi deserved a better written second half and better technical work. The gory violent nature of the action scenes might make family audiences uncomfortable, but if you are a fan of blood and top notch action, you can give this a one time watch.

Laththi Movie Review: Vishal’s action drama is riveting with minor flaws

Director vinoth kumar’s laththi, starring vishal, sunaina and ramana, is a compelling action drama with excellent stunt choreography. the film manages to hold your attention, for the most part, says our review..

Listen to Story

Vishal's Laththi hit the theatres on December 22.

Release Date: 22 Dec, 2022

It’s been quite a while since Vishal gave a superhit venture. After Irumbu Thirai, Vishal has had a few films that received mixed reviews, while the others left without a trace. Now, Vishal is back with Laththi, yet another cop drama, which is aimed at being different from the films of the same ilk. Did he deliver what he promised?

A brutal rape occurs and the police are in search of the criminal. The police nab the accused and police constable Muruganantham (Vishal) is asked to give him a heavy bashing to confess the truth. Later, they come to know that they falsely accused a person of rape. Muruganantham gets suspended for a year following a human rights case. One fine day, Muruganantham accidentally encounters the criminal who committed the heinous crime. It changed the course of his life and career, forever. Does Muruganantham escape from the wrath of the criminal? Will he get justice for the woman who died a tragic death? Laththi has answers to these questions.

Written and directed by Vinoth Kumar, Laththi is a film that surprises the audience to a large extent. At a time when Kollywood is dominated by films about cops in better designations in the police system, this film is about a police constable, a character that is not largely explored in Tamil cinema. Vishal, as a police constable, is convincing. He brings in the vulnerability of the job and showcases how the system does not back employees in the lower category. He is known as the laththi specialist and that’s the reason why he gets suspended. The film also glorifies police brutality to an extent. Once he gets reinstated after six months, he feels scared about touching the laththi. These are some brilliant touches which make you engrossed in the first half.

While Vishal gets a non-heroic entry, the villain gets hyped throughout the film. In the first half, the villain is masked. But, those who follow Kollywood can easily make out who the villain is even before the big reveal. Laththi then becomes a cat-and-mouse game, an interesting one at that. Vinoth Kumar did an exceptional job of keeping the suspense for the most part.

However, Lathth is not a film without flaws. When films talk about rape, the director is solely responsible for making an informed decision about showcasing the brutality on screen. In Laththi, the rapes are too graphic and distastefully done. We get the point that she was raped, but no need to watch that on repeat mode!

Similarly, some of the dialogues are too childish and ridiculous. The climax, too, is stretched beyond a point. That being said, the film relies on terrific stunt choreography and they excelled and how! Kudos to Peter Hein who meticulously designed the stunt sequences.

Laththi also does a good job of showing a balanced relationship between a husband and wife. It also gives you good parenting lessons. When Muruganantham and his wife’s (Sunaina) son, Rasu, get panic attacks, they get the right help for him. This is a welcome change, especially when we are so used to seeing annoying kids in films.

For Vishal, Laththi is a departure from the underwhelming films that he was a part of in the past few years. In the film, Vishal did his best in giving a restrained performance. Sunaina, Ramana, Prabhu, Lirish Raghav and several others aided the lead cast in terms of performance. Balasubramaniem and Balakrishna Thota’s cinematography and composer Yuvan Shankar Raja’s music helped in enhancing the film.

On the whole, Laththi is a different cop film and engaging for the most part.

2.5 out of 5 stars for Laththi. Published By: K Janani Published On: Dec 22, 2022 --- ENDS --- ALSO READ | Thalapathy Vijay's Varisu or Ajith Kumar's Thunivu? Vishal reveals his pick | Exclusive

Banner - Rana Productions

Music - Yuvan Shankar Raja

Vishal’s claim to fame in Telugu was Pandem Kodi. He couldn’t recreate such magic again even with Pandem Kodi 2. But some of his previous films like Detective and Abhimanyudu had done moderately well in Telugu. And many of his recent films turned out to be disappointment. Despite all this track record, Vishal is keen on releasing his films in Telugu regularly. He is now back with a cop drama Laththi. Will Vishal make comeback? Check out.

What is it about?

An ordinary police constable Murali Krishna (Vishal) gets suspended in connection with an issue. Upon rejoining, he beats influential person (son of a don), not knowing his identity and again lands in trouble. The egoistic don and his son don’t want to leave Murali and family. Murali is forced to confront the goons and protect his family from them. However, Murali and his 10-year-old son get trapped inside an under-construction building surrounded by the villains. The two must find a way to escape with their lives.

Performances

Vishal justifies his role as an innocent constable. Vishal’s wife (Sunaina), a nurse and doting wife, is alright but only confined to the first half. She gets sidelined in this hero-centric film. Veteran actor Prabhu is seen in a small role which doesn’t have a strong connection to the story. Ramana as Veera is a proud baddie and son of Don Sura (PN Sunny). The villains are let down in Laththi as they’re not prominent faces in Telugu. Child actor Lirish Raghav is good as Vishal’s son. He is part of the crucial episodes in the film.

Technicalities

Laththi has a very thin point. It is usual cop drama between an honest cop versus dreadful villain. Director Vinoth failed to deliver an interesting story. Yuvan Shankar Raja’s songs are not appealing and they have a lot of Tamil flavour. Background music is good though. Visuals are effective. The film drags due to lack of a compelling story.

Thumbs Up Vishal Some Action Scenes

Thumbs Down Weak Conflict Over The Top Scenes Second Half

It is a cat-and-mouse game between the protagonist and antagonist. However, unlike many such films where usually the protagonist chases the antagonist, whereas Laththi is exactly the opposite. It is the antagonist who is searching for the protagonist Murali unaware of his true identity who had beaten in the station.

Director Vinoth Kumar chose a wafer-thin point and tried to weave a story around it. But it is a very old cop story that’s done to death. Basically, Laththi is around ego of the antagonist who decides to take revenge on the since constable.  The scenes were so predictable. The first half is a filler and the real story begins after the villain identifies the hero. Ironically, the clue comes from the mobile ringtone based on which the antagonist identifies Murali as the cop to take revenge on.

The second-half is supposed to be a gripping and edge-of-the-seat thriller. Whereas the logics goes for toss when the protagonist and his son gets trapped in a building surrounded by hundreds of enemies. One and only Vishal takes on all the hundreds with some bruises on his body. This is unrealistic and filled with the over the top scenes. Laththi is marred by weak writing and too much cinematic liberties. The audiences lose the interest since they don’t connect much with what’s happening on the big screen. Lack of prominent faces as the villains is also let down in Telugu.

This is another big fat bore commercial cinema with Tamil flavour. Even the action lovers doesn’t have moments to relish on. It is Vishal’s Laththi charge on the audiences. Better to stay away!

Verdict: Laththi Charge On Audiences

Laththi Review: Begins Well But Falters

Laththi Review: Begins Well But Falters

Movie: Laththi Rating: 2.25/5 Banner: Rana Productions Cast: Vishal, Sunaina, Prabhu, Ramana, Thalaivasal Vijay, Munishkanth, and others Music: Yuvan Shankar Raja Director of Photography: Balasubramaniam Editor: N.B.Srikanth Producers: Ramana and Nandaa Written and directed by: A Vinoth Kumar Release Date: Dec 22, 2022

Vishal has aggressively promoted "Laththi" and has expressed confidence in the film's success.

Let's see if his confidence is justified.

Story: Constable Murali Krishna (Vishal) is suspended for beating an innocent person with his baton. He was accepted six months later on the recommendation of a higher-ranking officer (Prabhu). The notorious criminal Veera (Ramana), son of don Sura, harasses the officer's daughter one day.

Officer kidnaps Veera and contacts Murali Krishna and instructs him to beat Veera.

A video of a police officer goes online. However, the video conceals the officer's identity. Sura eventually tracks down Murali Krishna, the constable who beat him, and decides to take his life. How does Murali Krishna protect his family?

Artistes’ Performances: Vishal has acted out the role of Murali Krishna with conviction. He portrays himself as a conscientious police officer and doting family man. He gets to perform the actual action sequences in the latter part of the film.

Ramana is a natural as the villain Veera. As Vishal's wife, Sunaiana has little to do.

Technical Excellence: Cinematography, production values, and action sequences all meet regular standards. The two songs are forgettable, but the background score is fine.

Highlights: First half Vishal

Drawback: Predictable narration Climax sequences

Analysis Vishal is given room in "Laththi" to showcase his talents. Maybe this is why Vishal put so much effort into this film. The director's approach to the story is what initially keeps us interested, despite the story's lack of originality.

In the initial portions, we learn why Vishal is taken off patrol and the moral quandary he faces after being reinstated. From there, the drama progresses to the essence of the story: the villains trying to track down the hero while the hero, using his cunning, manages to trap them.

Our attention is held throughout this long sequence in which the villain is trying to track down the constable who defeated him, and in which the constable (hero) demonstrates his superior intelligence.

When our hero and antagonist finally meet, however, the paper-thin plot falls flat. The director's skill, which was on full display up until the break, is completely gone.

While it's commendable that the director and hero Vishal keep the focus on the story rather than digress into duets and item songs, the dragging sequences in the film's middle act are wearing. Furthermore, the emotional monologue that Vishal performs during the climax is difficult to swallow.

Despite the fact that the police department is aware that their constable is fighting a don, no one has shown up to back him up. This makes no sense at all.

To sum up, "Laatthi" has a promising beginning but falls short of its potential. It has a decent premise and some interesting parts in the middle, but it falls flat in the end.

Bottom line: Mixed Material

Noted actor Vishal is back with an action drama Laatti. The movie gets good buzz with decent promotions. The flick hit screens today and let’s see how it will be.

Murali Krishna (Vishal) is a sincere police constable. For some reason, he gets suspended and rejoins the duty with the help of DIG Kamal (Prabhu). One day, Kamal asks for a favor to beat the hell out of Veera (Ramana), son of the don Sura (Sunny PN), who wants to plunge into politics. But, Veera decides to take revenge on Murali Krishna. What happened next and how Krishna dealt with them forms the crux of the story.

Plus Points:

This kind of role is a cakewalk for the actor Vishal. His performance as a sincere police constable who cares for society and family is impressive. He delivers his best and solely lifts the film. When it comes to fighting sequences, Vishal needs to be appreciated for his dedication. He is so intense in the action scenes.

Sunainaa gets a decent role and she justifies her character. The remaining actors are okay within their given roles. The kid Lirish Raghav is good in the given role. He performs well in the emotional scenes in the climax.

The story is simple and one can predict it easily. But, the way the debutant director A Vinoth Kumar runs the show is a bit engaging. He manages to make the film a decent one. As said in promotions, the last 40 minutes of the film are good to watch. Peter Hein gets all the credit for composing engrossing fight sequences.

Minus Points:

It looks like the director focuses only on Vishal’s character. He succeeds in writing good scenes for the protagonist but fails to write the rest of the part in an impressive manner. The protagonist will be highlighted only if the antagonist is cruel. This is where the director needs to focus more on. Scenes related to villains are unimpressive. Besides, the director takes a routine story and tries hard to narrate it engagingly.

On the other hand, the songs are unimpressive. The director could have made the music director Yuvan Shankar Raja compose fine tunes. However, the score of Yuvan is decent and it helps a lot to make action sequences intriguing.

The major point that needs to be discussed is the casting. The director should have roped in familiar faces for the villain roles. He creates suspense by not revealing the villain’s face until the interval. Unfortunately, the villain is less familiar to most of the audience and his performance is also normal.

Technical Aspects:

Director tries to narrate a routine cop drama in an engaging manner. Injecting several twists and turns could have made the film a better action drama. The score is okay and so is the cinematography. The fight sequences are captured in a manner that makes one feel the thrill. Production values are neat and the dubbing is also good.

On the whole, Laatti is a mediocre cop drama with an outdated plot and screenplay. Vishal is the only saviour of this film. The rest of the characters, especially the villain gang, are unimpressive. Those who don’t care about the story but love to watch a film just for some action sequences can watch the film this weekend.

Actor Vishal has been in cinema for the past 20 years. The 45-year-old actor got into a lot of controversies. Vishal's recent film Veeramey Vaagai Soodum, Enemy and Action films did not give the expected success. Thus, Vishal is hoping that the film Lathi will take him back to the path of success.

He is very good actor who proved his mettle with brilliant performances in many films like Chellamey, Sandakozhi, Thimiru, Thamirabarani and Avan Ivan. But later he started concentrating more on commercial success rather than working on performance oriented films. Laththi looks promising like a good combination of both commercial elements and Vishal's performance. Hope he comes back to the track after 6 consecutive flops with this film. Let's wish actor Vishal and producer Rana for a great success with Laththi.

Laththi Movie Review:  Vishal, Sunaina, Thalaivasal Vijay, Misha Ghoshal, Prabhu, Munishkanth and others starrer action thriller drama Laththi has finally hit the theaters. Let’s see the story of Laththi.

Story:  Muruganandam (Vishal) is a very dedicated constable and laththi specialist who is loyal to his job.  He is married to Kavitha and has a child. Murunganatham and his 10 years old son unexpectedly find themselves trapped in a building under construction in the hands of a terrifying gang.  Will Muruganandham and his son escape the wrath of gangster or fall prey to them? To get this answer, one should watch the movie Laththi on silver screen.

Plus Points:

·         Vishal

·         Action sequences

·         Performance

·         Twist

 Minus Points:

·         Predictable screenplay

·         Second half

·         BGM

Performance:    Once again Vishal impresses the viewers with his marvelous acting. He performs superb in the action sequences. When it comes to acting, Vishal is one of the best actors  of Kollywood and it has been proved in many movies.  In this film he  is known as the laththi specialist and that’s the reason why he gets suspended.  The movie Laththi also glorifies police brutality to an extent. Once he gets reinstated after a gap of 6 months, he feels scared about touching the laththi. Sunaina gets limited screen presence but does her part well in the limited time. Pillodu, who played the role of Vishal’s son, impressed everyone. Along with Prabhu, all the other actors have done their part as much as the story required.

Technical:   The film has routine story.  Fight scenes are extraordinary. Yuvan Shankar Raja’s music and background score doesn’t help to elevate the emotions in Laththi. Balasubramanian and Balakrishna Thotala’s cinematography are not up to the mark   The most of the scenes look too colourful. The technical aspects are decent, and stunt sequences are choreographed in a realistic way, salute to Peter Hein. Coming on the work of director  Vinoth Kumar , he does an exceptional job of keeping the suspense for the most part.  Production values are good.

Analysis:  Laththi is  a commercial action Film with conflict between hero  and villain. The first half quite well and second half is filled with number of action scenes.   Vishal’ performance and his stunts are the major plus  points of the movie. The villain gets hyped throughout the film. In the first half, the main villain is masked. 45 minutes stunt sequence in the second half is one of the major drawbacks to the narrative.   Vishal delivers yet another stunner with his stunts.

Vishal-Laatti-Telugu-Movie-Review

Performances Vishal is struck in Pandemkodi that released seventeen years back. He chose same template films and continues the same acting he always does. He may have even lost the count of the roles he did in same pattern with only cosmetic changes.

The Emotional act of Vishal during the climax is an indication of how he did not improve a bit as an actor beyond that loud performances. The expressions he maintains in the scene evoke laughter and irritates the audience.

Sunaina plays the wife character. She looks good and is okay with the performance. Prabhu is seen in a cameo kind of role and is okay. Munishkanth appears in a little role and is alright in whatever he is given. The artists who played villains are totally ineffective. Particularly the one who played Sura is even silly. Bad writing of their characters make them look even bad. The other characters are mostly trivial.

Analysis A Vinoth Kumar has selected a cop story with family emotions for his Laati with Vishal. Pon Parthiban has written the story.

In a cop story, we expect heroism in the character but that is only confined to the first and last blocks of the film. The family story needs proper establishment of the characters and the bonding between them. Even though there is a premise for that to happen nothing really works due to bad writing.

There are lots of inconsistencies in the character of Murali Krishna. He is introduced as a stubborn, upright cop and later his character turns meek for the most part of the film. And suddenly towards the end, there is a bland drama in the name of twists that rather appear silly.

There are multiple threads in the story – a Rape case, father-son track, Police drama, Politics, Revenge, etc. Even though the director tries to embed multiple threads into one story. It is like all of them are routine and beaten to death. Even if they are neatly handled, the movie will still be routine and boring.

Sunaina-Laatti-Telugu-Movie-Review

Finally, Laati is forgettable attempt by Vishal. Beaten to death story, hollow characterizations, Bland writing, and inspid narration makes the movie a bad experience for the audience. High time Vishal reinvents himself and come out with something interesting and sensible.

Music and Other Departments? A Vinoth Kumar and Pon Parthiban have cooked a bland and boring story. The dialogues also barely worked. In terms of the other Technical Departments, Sam CS’s background score is only a bit noticeable. It has worked at places and in some places, the background score is good but did not work with the scenes. There are a couple of songs that are just for namesake. The cinematography is very average. The film feels lengthy even at a usual runtime.

Highlights? Sam CS’s Score at Places

Drawbacks? Poor Writing Boring & Predictable Scenes Lack of Logic Climax

Tv/streaming, collections, great movies, chaz's journal, contributors, the synanon fix.

lathi movie review rating

Rory Kennedy is a phenomenal interviewer. We’ve seen this before in her other projects like the Oscar-nominated “ Last Days in Vietnam ,” and it’s the main strength of her new project, HBO’s 4-part “The Synanon Fix.” Her skill set in making people feel comfortable allows former members of the self-help group that turned into a cult to speak so candidly about their time in the organization, to the point that some admit things on-camera that they surely never have before. These men and women are remarkably open about not just what Synanon meant to their recovery but how the group descended into darkness under the increasing madness of its leader, Chuck Dederich. As is so often the case nowadays, “The Synanon Fix” isn’t the right length—it would have made an excellent feature documentary—as the first couple episodes take too long to get to the downfall era of Synanon, but there’s something powerful about the sheer bulk of the hard-to-believe stories of a group that felt problematic from the beginning.

Many of the survivors of Synanon would disagree with that last sentence. It’s startling to hear how many of the people involved in this organization still speak about its origins positively, noting that they wouldn’t be here without it. And yet watching “The Synanon Fix,” one can see the rot at the core of this approach to sobriety from the very beginning. Founded in 1957 by Dederich, Synanon was a drug rehab program in Santa Monica that was built around tearing people down. They gained notoriety for something called the “game,” a form of attack therapy wherein people essentially criticize, ridicule, and insult someone, forcing them into sobriety through shame more than anything else. Does it work? There are people alive today who insist that it does. But it inherently creates a deeply flawed power dynamic in that someone has to be in charge of the “game.” It is incredibly easy to draw the line from Dederich overseeing attack therapy to the way he would increase his attempts to control Synanon members over the decades to come.

“The Synanon Fix” really captures how programs like this rely on brainwashing. By the end, Synanon was abusing children, forcing members to swap partners, and even allegedly attempting murder by rattlesnake. Between those early days of letting junkies clean up on a dirty couch and the downfall, Kennedy details the increasingly disturbing decisions by the power structure of Synanon, particularly Dederich. So much of what is captured here is a story of how controlling behavior feeds on itself. Every time Dederich got his followers to do one thing, he had to top it the next time, until he was breaking one of the core rules about violence, broadcasting his members’ personal trauma, and shaving the heads of the females in Synanon. When Kennedy gets to interviewing the children of a neighbor who was well-known for being a sort of Underground Railroad for young people fleeing the abusive compound next door, it’s clear that the group has long ago left behind its higher moral purpose.

And yet what’s so interesting about the final hour is how little judgment the survivors place on Synanon. As a standalone hour, it’s one of the most fascinating documents in a long time regarding how cults form and persist. We all like to believe that we wouldn’t fall for a cult leader like Dederich but listen to these people who have seen so much awful behavior speak about community, survival, and supporting one another. Cults form because people ignore the bad and focus only on the good that they’re getting from that organization. When a gentleman speaks of being forced into a vasectomy in his twenties during a time when Dederich thought their group should be childless—women were forced into abortions too—there’s almost no anger in his voice. One would expect these people to be furious at being manipulated, but they seem to still consider all of the bad stuff that happened as mere cost for the clean community that saved their lives.

All of this could have been accomplished, and arguably more powerfully, in a feature film. The set-up takes too long—the first hour is particularly slow—and there could have been even more blunt power with better pace to the horror show of Synanon. There’s still enough here to warrant a look, largely because of how much Kennedy gets her subjects to open up in ways that feel almost unfathomable, speaking openly about trauma in a manner that reflects how a group like Synanon happens in the first place. We like to think that something like Synanon couldn’t happen today in a world more aware of cult behavior. Watching “The Synanon Fix” reminded me that human behavior can be manipulated in the name of rehabilitation or self-help. That's how cults happen. Leaders can do anything if they convince their members it's related to their best interest.

Whole series screened for review. Premieres on HBO on April 1 st .

Movie Review: Love wins in the triumphant ‘Housekeeping for Beginners’

lathi movie review rating

“Housekeeping for Beginners” begins with a shot of a painting on a wall hanging just a little askew. It’s an apt metaphor for what’s in store.

Writer and director Goran Stolevski gives us an atypical family portrait that’s brilliantly political without being preachy, loving without being maudlin and epic by being specifically tiny.

This is the complex story set mostly in a villa outside Skopje, the capital city of North Macedonia, that has become a refuge for those not in the mainstream — queer, Roma or a mix of both, ethnic minorities colliding with sexual ones in a repressive, traditional society.

Shot entirely with handheld cameras and using subtitles, “Housekeeping for Beginners” may seem daunting at first as viewers are thrust into a chaotic, multigenerational household with no navigation.

But Stolevski’s use of cinema verite — shaky close-ups, capturing routine things like the brushing of teeth — and globalization mean we see things we know even if it is North Macedonia — boring bus commutes, Grindr, the joy of picking up kids from kindergarten, Adidas footwear and singing loudly along to very bad pop songs in the living room. They might be Serbian pop songs, but no matter.

Eventually, Romanian actress Anamaria Marinca — absolutely brilliant — emerges as the fulcrum. She is Dita, a no-nonsense Albanian healthcare worker and den mother with a deep well of love and patience. Along for the ride is her Roma lover and her two children, her longtime Albanian gay friend Toni and his younger lover Ali, and various young social exiles who have found the home a good place to figure out who they are.

Serbia's President Aleksandar Vucic speaks during doorstep statements, prior to the Western Balkans meets EU, Growth plan for WB - Leaders meeting, in Skopje, North Macedonia, on Monday, Jan. 22, 2024. (AP Photo/Boris Grdanoski)

In the first half, Dita’s partner, Suada, faces a health scare and the household must try to adjust if she doesn’t make it. As a single mother, Suada pleads with Dita to legally adopt her two girls — one a sullen teen and the other an exuberant 5-year-old. Without legal protection, who knows what will happen to them in a world where their ethnicity is denigrated?

The movie’s second half shows this ragtag family trying to pass as what passes for normal — Dita and Toni going to parties pretending to be a couple, the two girls pretending both of the adults are their parents. “Nothing has to change,” Dita tells them, but the strain of not being who they are is overwhelming.

Cinematographer Naum Doksevski’s camera spins and swoops as the family bursts out of his frame, constantly in motion and animated. Scenes never really end, just become a hectic series of vivid postcards adding up to an emotional connection as various hotheaded decisions threaten to rip this family apart.

In addition to Marinca, Samson Selim is superb as the sweet young lover to Ali, instantly a protector and big brother to the youngest daughter, trying to ensure her childhood is loving and happy, something his eyes say he did not enjoy himself. Vladimir Tintor, who plays Toni, is a stoic slow-burner but powerfully reveals the fear of being aged out of love.

A neat conclusion is not in store for this family, but a satisfying one is. Like magnets pulled together, the various pieces might fly apart but there’s a grudging admiration and appreciation that keeps them together. It’s love and that’s the same in the Balkans or Brazil.

It may come as somewhat of a shock to discover that the movie, so rooted in North Macedonia, could have been set elsewhere. The Macedonia-born, Australia-based Stolevski initially considered Australia. And that’s the point: It’s what happens in the house that matters, not where the house is.

“Housekeeping for Beginners,” a Focus Features release, is rated R for “sexual content, language throughout and some teen drinking.” Running time: 107 minutes. Three and a half stars out of four.

MPAA definition of R: Restricted. Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian.

'la chimera' is marvelous — right up to its most magical ending.

Justin Chang

lathi movie review rating

Carol Duarte and Josh O'Connor in La Chimera . Neon hide caption

Carol Duarte and Josh O'Connor in La Chimera .

The wonderful 42-year-old filmmaker Alice Rohrwacher practices a kind of cinema that I've come to think of as "Italian magical neorealism." She gives us portraits of hard-scrabble lives in poor rural communities, but they're graced by a whimsical, almost fable-like sense of enchantment.

Rohrwacher's 2014 film, The Wonders , was a lyrical drama about a family of Tuscan beekeepers. She followed that in 2018 with Happy as Lazzaro , about a group of sharecroppers on a tobacco farm whose story moves from picaresque comedy to aching tragedy.

'The Wonders' Of Family And Change

'The Wonders' Of Family And Change

Her marvelous new movie, La Chimera , follows in much the same vein, with one key difference. While Rohrwacher has generally worked with non-professional Italian actors, this time she's cast the English actor Josh O'Connor , best known for his Emmy-winning performance as a young Prince Charles on The Crown .

But O'Connor's character here doesn't give off even a whiff of royalty, even if his name is Arthur. When we first meet him, he's asleep on a train bound for his old stomping grounds in Tuscany. He's just been released from prison after serving some time for the crime of grave robbing.

Arthur has a mysterious archeological talent: Wielding a divining rod, he can detect the presence of buried artifacts, many of which date back to the Etruscan civilization more than 2,000 years ago. Arthur works with a group of tombaroli , or tomb raiders, who rely on him to figure out where to dig.

Upon his return, many of those old friends welcome him back with a parade — one of several moments in which Rohrwacher briefly channels the vibrant human chaos of a Fellini film. Arthur is a little reluctant to rejoin his old gang, since they let him take the rap after their last job. But he doesn't seem to have anything else to do, or anywhere else to go. He may be an outsider — his Italian throughout is decent but far from perfect — but it's the only place in the world that feels remotely like home. And O'Connor plays him with such a deep sense of melancholy that it feels almost special when his handsome, careworn face breaks into a warm smile.

It's not immediately clear what Arthur wants; unlike his cohorts, he doesn't seem all that interested in making money off their spoils. The answer turns out to lie in his dreams, which are haunted by a beautiful young woman named Beniamina — the love of his life, whom he's lost under unclear circumstances.

And so Arthur's determination to go underground becomes a metaphor for his longing for an irretrievable past: Beniamina is the Eurydice to his Orpheus, and he wants her back desperately.

Arthur is still close to Beniamina's mother, Flora, played with a wondrous mix of warmth and imperiousness by the great Isabella Rossellini. Her presence here made me think of her filmmaker father, the neorealist titan Roberto Rossellini — a fitting association for a movie about how the past is forever seeping into the present.

One of the pleasures of Rohrwacher's filmmaking is the way she subtly blurs our sense of time. La Chimera is set in the 1980s, but it could be taking place 20 years earlier, or 20 years later. Rohrwacher and her brilliant cinematographer, Hélène Louvart, shot the movie on a mix of film stocks and sometimes tweak the image in ways that evoke the cinematic antiquities of the silent era. As sorrowful as Arthur's journey is, there's a playfulness to Rohrwacher's sensibility that keeps pulling you in, inviting you to get lost in the movie's mysteries.

One of the story's most significant characters is Italia, played by the Brazilian actor Carol Duarte, who works in Flora's household. Italia is a bit of an odd duck with a beguiling bluntness about her, and she might be just the one to pull Arthur out of his slump and get him to stop living in the past.

I won't give away what happens, except to say that La Chimera builds to not one but two thrilling scenes of underground exploration, in which Arthur must finally figure out his life's purpose — not by using a divining rod, but by following his heart. And it leads to the most magical movie ending I've seen in some time, and also the most real.

Is breaking bad really getting a heisenberg sequel movie in 2024 not so fast.

A poster revealing a 2024 Walter White-centered Breaking Bad spin-off movie has gained traction online. Is it real? Here's what we know.

  • The 2024 Breaking Bad Heisenberg movie poster is fan-made, not legitimate, and not part of any planned continuation of the franchise.
  • AMC Films is not a real production company, and there are no current plans for a Breaking Bad movie sequel at any point in the future.
  • After Better Call Saul ended in 2022, Vince Gilligan has moved on to new projects, with no intention of continuing the Breaking Bad franchise beyond it.

A poster has surfaced for a 2024 Breaking Bad Heisenberg movie sequel, bringing its legitimacy into question. For over a decade since the show's ending, audiences have inquired regarding the future of Breaking Bad characters , or at least the select few who survived. The prequel series Better Call Saul offered a few glimpses throughout its run, and the sequel film El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie followed up Jessie Pinkman's story in 2019. Still, passionate and dedicated fans of the series crave more, causing a reactive internet response to a poster going around.

Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, and El Camino are all available to stream on Netflix.

The poster depicts Walter White lying in a hospital bed, indicating that he awoke after his supposed death in the Breaking Bad ending. The headline reads " Heisenberg," suggesting the film's name, with an August 2024 release date. The Facebook post revealed a detailed synopsis in its caption, which explained that the movie would follow Walter White escaping prison. Breaking Bad is one of the best TV shows of all time , so there's no surprise that such a poster would trigger a quick, explosive response.

Breaking Bad Is Not Getting A Heisenberg Movie Sequel In 2024

The breaking bad sequel poster is fan-made, and there is no movie planned for the franchise.

Simply put, the poster is fake. There is no Breaking Bad movie coming in 2024, nor is there one currently planned at any point in the future. In addition, AMC Films is not a real production company. Bryan Cranston, who led the Breaking Bad cast as Walter White, has returned to the role multiple times for Better Call Saul and a Super Bowl commercial where he appeared alongside Aaron Paul. However, neither of those appearances altered the Breaking Bad ending, as one took place before his death chronologically, and the other is a joke for a commercial.

It's hard to imagine any of the creative talents involved in making a well-crafted series like Breaking Bad would have any interest in such an idea.

Breaking Bad had one of the best TV show finales of all time , making the idea of retroactively changing it for a movie sequel ludicrous. Walter White evidently died in Breaking Bad , completing a five-season arc with cathartic moments in Ozymandias and Felina . Having him return for a prison break, portraying an unhinged Heisenberg, would absolutely betray that arc. It's hard to imagine any of the creative talents involved in making a well-crafted series like Breaking Bad would have any interest in such an idea.

There Are No Current Plans To Continue The Breaking Bad Franchise After Better Call Saul

After better call saul ended in 2022, breaking bad creator vince gilligan has moved on to new projects.

As of now, Better Call Saul is the final installment to the Breaking Bad franchise . The show ended in 2022 to overwhelming critical acclaim, concluding the final arcs in Vince Gilligan's world of Albuquerque crime. Realistically, there aren't many promising narratives to follow in future spin-offs, hence why Gilligan has moved on to a new project. The Breaking Bad creator is now working on a TV series for Apple TV+ which is set to star the magnificent Rhea Seehorn, who played Kim Wexler for all six seasons of Better Call Saul .

Now you'd expect a twist of the variety the movie has in store sometime or the other, but it still hits pretty hard. It is well placed, and well enacted. The action sequences are well executed. The traps, the lighting, and the stunts, while definitely over-the-top, are still pretty entertaining to watch.

Laththi Movie Review: Interesting ideas get lathi-charged in this actioner. Everything points at a fun, engaging action-thriller on paper, but the end result is quite the opposite. It is seen as desperate and further tiring to the audience. To make things worse, the bad performance of Vishal in the crucial emotional block misfires big time.
