Fly into Miami or Fort Lauderdale . Chauffeured transportation is expensive. Renting a car is best. From Miami, take Florida's Turnpike south to US Route 1 . Take US 1 to Key Largo. Note that the toll roads no longer allow you to pay cash, however, you can register your car online in order to use the toll roads. Rental cars are equipped with transponders, but fees vary by company.

There are also cheap local bus connections to Key Largo from the Miami metro area for those with some patience and flexibility.

Get around [ edit ]

Key Largo does not lend itself to bikes or walking. Although there is a bike path, it runs just alongside the highway, and as such would not be the most relaxing (or pleasant) of rides. Most shops are along the highway, and as such the main drag has something of a strip-mall feel (for the most part, the water is not visible from the highway).

Key Largo Overview

Key largo — northernmost of the florida keys (mile markers 108 to 90).

Driving from mainland Florida, visitors to the Florida Keys enter the 125-mile-long subtropical island chain at  Key Largo , the longest and northernmost island in the Keys.   Key Largo is bordered on the west by Florida Bay and the Everglades National Park backcountry, and to the east by the Atlantic Ocean, home to the clear waters of the Gulf Stream. Visitors can enjoy Key Largo's ties to the sea with attractions including scuba diving, snorkeling, an underwater hotel, sport fishing, eco-tours, beaches and dolphin encounter programs.   The island also offers a variety of onshore attractions including two state parks, nonprofit organizations dedicated to restoring coral reefs, shaded nature trails and a rehabilitation center for wild birds.   Key Largo is best known for  John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park , the first underwater preserve in the United States. In shallow waters adjacent to the park at a site called Key Largo Dry Rocks rests the 9-foot-tall bronze “Christ of the Deep” statue, an iconic landmark for divers and snorkelers. Today the park welcomes more than 650,000 visitors annually who come to explore its nature trails and beaches and observe its abundant underwater wildlife.   Pennekamp is part of the  Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary . The sanctuary covers about 3,800 square miles of coral reefs, seagrass beds and mangrove swamp on both sides of the Keys island chain and throughout the surrounding waters of Florida Bay, the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean.   The sanctuary’s indigenous population comprises more than 6,000 species of marine life and plants. The living reefs off Key Largo are acclaimed as some of the most fascinating scuba diving sites in the world.   Key Largo, often called the Dive Capital of the World, is a prime shallow-reef destination for children and adults who want to try diving for the first time or earn their dive certification. Its leading sites for experienced divers include the  Spiegel Grove , one of the largest vessels ever intentionally sunk to become an artificial reef.   The island also is known around the globe for its dolphin interaction attractions and therapy programs.   Key Largo gained movie fame when the 1947 classic “Key Largo,” featuring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, hit the silver screen. A local bar, the Caribbean Club, provided a backdrop for some of the movie's scenes.   Bogie's presence is apparent even today in Key Largo. Visitors can cruise aboard the restored 1912 steam-powered vessel from one of his other epic films, “The African Queen.”   Key Largo is about a 60-minute drive from Miami International Airport and a world away from South Florida’s mainland.

Spiegel Grove ,  fla-keys.com/spiegelgrove . The 510-foot-long, 84-foot-high retired U.S. Navy landing ship dock is one of the largest ships ever intentionally sunk to create an artificial reef. The sunken vessel attracts legions of fish and other Keys marine life that can be viewed by scuba divers with advanced diving experience. It is positioned about 6 miles off Key Largo and lies 130 feet deep; its minimum depth is about 45 feet. At its affiliated Mission Wild Bird Hospital, 92080 Overseas Highway, mile marker 92, there’s an education center and gift shop. Birds undergoing medical treatment at the hospital are not available for public viewing.   Jules' Undersea Lodge , 51 Shoreland Drive, mile marker 103.2 oceanside; 305-451-2353,  jul.com . Visiting Key Largo in the Upper Keys is a great introduction to the vibe and activities of the Florida Keys. Stretching over 30 miles long and situated between the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean, this beautiful island is known for its coral reefs, tropical climate, and breathtaking sunsets. With its crystal-clear waters and stunning beaches, Key Largo is a popular destination for visitors seeking outdoor adventures such as scuba diving, snorkeling, kayaking, and fishing.

The island is also home to the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park , a protected marine reserve, and the first undersea park in the United States. Key Largo offers a unique blend of natural beauty and adventure that makes it an ideal vacation spot for anyone seeking a tropical getaway.

This is everything you need to know about visiting Key Largo, the start of the Florida Keys. See what to expect on the biggest of the Keys, including the main attractions and basic ideas for starting a Florida Keys trip the right way.

History of Key Largo

Key Largo has a recorded history dating back to the early 1800s when the island was primarily inhabited by the Calusa Native American nation. The Calusa were skilled fishermen and hunters who built their homes on the island’s high ground and utilized the surrounding waters for food and transportation.

In the mid-1800s, European settlers began to arrive on Key Largo, and the island became a hub for the lucrative sponging industry. Divers would harvest natural sponges from the ocean floor and bring them back to Key Largo for processing and shipment to markets throughout the world.

During the early 1900s, Key Largo’s economy shifted towards agriculture, and pineapple plantations became the primary industry on the island. However, the Great Depression brought about the decline of the pineapple industry, and Key Largo transitioned towards tourism.

In the 1960s, the island gained national attention as the setting for the popular movie “Key Largo,” starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. The film was a major success and put Key Largo on the map as a premier vacation destination. And if you’re a Humphrey Bogart fan, when you’re visiting Key Largo you can actually take a ride on the African Queen from the famous film. No, not filmed here, but the boat lives in port here and it’s a great film history tour!

Today, Key Largo is home to a thriving tourism industry and is known for its world-class diving, fishing, and eco-tourism activities. Despite its modern amenities, Key Largo has managed to maintain its laid-back, tropical charm, making it a favorite destination for visitors from around the world.

Was the Film “Key Largo” actually Shot Here?

Yes, the film “Key Largo” was actually filmed on location in Key Largo, Florida. The movie was directed by John Huston and starred Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Edward G. Robinson, and Lionel Barrymore, among others. The story takes place in a hotel in Key Largo during a hurricane, where a group of gangsters hold the guests hostage. The film was released in 1948 and was a critical and commercial success, earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for Claire Trevor, who won the award. The film’s success helped to put Key Largo on the map as a popular vacation destination, and it remains a classic piece of American cinema.

State Parks and Preserves are on Key Largo

There are two State Parks, a National Park (part of one) and a National Wildlife Refuge on or near Key Largo. These spots are great for seeing wildlife, bird watching and enjoying the natural side of the Florida Keys. Key Largo is a huge island, so it’s got lots of undeveloped land and marine areas to explore.

John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park

John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park This is the first underwater park in the United States and covers approximately 70 nautical square miles. The park includes the only living coral reef in the continental United States, which can be explored through snorkeling, scuba diving, and glass-bottom boat tours. The park also offers kayaking, canoeing, and hiking trails.

Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park

Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park is located just north of Key Largo (after the exit from the island) and features 84 protected acres of tropical hardwood hammocks, mangrove swamps, and wetlands. Visitors can explore the park’s trails, which are home to a variety of native plant and animal species, including the endangered Key Largo woodrat and cotton mouse.

Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge

The Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge is a 6,700-acre preserve located in the upper Florida Keys, including parts of Key Largo. The refuge was established in 1980 to protect critical habitat for the endangered American crocodile and other wildlife species.

The American crocodile is a rare and threatened species that lives in coastal areas, including mangrove swamps, and estuaries throughout the Caribbean, Central, and South America. Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge provides a sanctuary for this species and its habitat, including freshwater marshes, mangrove forests, and saltwater ponds.

The refuge is managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and is closed to the public except for occasional guided tours and research activities.

Note: I wanted to include the Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge here because if you’re looking at a map as you explore Key Largo, you’ll see it and maybe try to visit it. We never want to send anyone on a wild goose (or croc) chase, so it’s good to have all the info before you try to explore.

Everglades National Park

While not located directly on Key Largo, Everglades National Park is situated just a short drive north of the island. The park covers over 1.5 million acres of wetlands, mangroves, and forests, and is home to a vast array of plant and animal species. Visitors can explore the park’s wilderness through hiking, boating, and guided tours.

The Flamingo Entrance located in Homestead is the closest road into Everglades National Park. If you’re spending a week in the Keys and are based out of Key Largo, planning a day trip into Everglades National Park is a great idea. You’ll love the environment and wildlife!

Museums on Key Largo

While Key Largo is primarily known for its natural beauty and outdoor activities, there are a few museums on the island that are worth a visit. Here are some of the top museums on Key Largo:

The History of Diving Museum is dedicated to the history of diving and features a collection of artifacts and exhibits showcasing the evolution of diving equipment and techniques over time. The museum also hosts educational programs and events, making it a great museum for families and history buffs alike. It’s basically vintage Florida Keys meet underwater culture. Pretty cool! PS: is also has one of the best murals in the Florida Keys!

Florida Keys Wild Bird Rehabilitation Center

While not strictly a museum, the Florida Keys Wild Bird Rehabilitation Center is a non-profit organization that provides care and rehabilitation for injured birds in the Florida Keys. Visitors can take a self-guided tour of the center and learn about the different bird species that call the Keys home. There is also a trail into the mangroves, and throughout the day there are staff present talking about the birds onsite.

Bonus: there is an epic strangler fig/banyan tree on property too!

The Art Scene on Key Largo

While the art scene on Key Largo is relatively small, there are a few galleries on the island that showcase the work of local and regional artists. Photography and painting are the most common types of art you’ll find, and if you’re not in the market to buy any, you are always welcome to visit the galleries and studio spaces to support the artists.

  • Key Largo Art Gallery and Frame Studio : This gallery features the work of local and regional artists, with a focus on capturing the natural beauty of the Florida Keys. Visitors can view and purchase paintings, sculptures, and other art pieces inspired by the island’s tropical landscapes and marine life.

John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park

The only living coral reef system in the continental United States is offshore of the Florida Keys.  Early in 1960, after years of environmental impact, the United States government designated the reef system and surrounding waters as a protected area.

Later in the year, Florida established John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, further protecting and preserving the remarkable coral reef and associated marine ecosystems at Key Largo. This was the first undersea park in the United States and now covers about 70 nautical square miles.

Today divers come from around the world to see its coral reefs which teem with colorful fish, sea turtles and other marine plants and animals.

Back of glass-bottom boat floating at state park's dock

There are several ways to visit the reef:  diving tours , snorkelling tours , or glass-bottom boat tours .

We opted to stay dry and chose the glass-bottom boat tour.  The 2.5-hour tour visits various parts of the reef, such as Molasses Reef.

While sitting around the large glass viewing portals , we saw schools of colorful fish, the odd moray eel and a sea turtle.  There was even a nurse shark.  We saw new coral growing on a line structure which will be replanted to help restore the reefs.

Back on land, head to the visitor center and see more marine life in the large 30,000-gallon aquarium and a number of interesting displays.

There are also several hiking trails, offering a chance to explore the coastal hammocks and mangroves.  There are 2 beaches as well as kayak, canoe and paddle-board rentals. RVers and tent campers are welcome at the campground.

To reserve your glass-bottom boat tickets, visit the John Pennekamp website.

The African Queen

Yes, this is THE African Queen, the actual boat used in the classic 1951 film of the same name.  Built in 1912, this steam-powered vessel has been lovingly restored.  Passengers experience the nostalgia of the film which earned Humphrey Bogart his only Oscar.

Rear view African Queen vessel at its dock

We boarded the African Queen and enjoyed an entertaining 1.5 hour cruise through the Key Largo canals and the near shore waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

Learn the interesting history the African Queen, the vessel and how it eventually found a home in Key Largo.  Captain Eddie, our tour guide, cast and photographed us recreating a classic scene on board between stars Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn.  On the way back to the dock, Captain Eddie tested our movie knowledge with some timeless movie quotes.

Person relaxing at tiller of boat waterway and docks background

Carrying only six passengers at a time, this is an intimate and entertaining cruise back in time. What a lot of fun!

To reserve tickets, go to the African Queen website.

Coral Restoration Foundation Exploration Center

Learn about the vital ecological role of coral reefs, the challenges facing coral reefs today and the process of coral growth and reef restoration.  Through education and active restoration, the Coral Restoration Foundation is working to restore and protect the health of our coral reefs.

The foundation grows corals in offshore Coral Tree™ Nurseries in the Florida Keys.  In the nurseries, the coral are cultivated and nurtured.  Once mature, they are removed from the nursery and outplanted to carefully selected reef sites.  At these sites, the new corals will grow and strengthen the existing reef structure.

There are currently 8 nurseries, with more than 750 coral trees, each holding about 60 corals.  Over 30,000 corals are grown each year .

Several classroom-style wall displays about coral

In addition to public education, classes are held at the center for divers, training them to work in the offshore coral nurseries or to outplant the new corals on existing reefs.  Our guide demonstrated the technique to secure the new coral to the coral reef.

One of the most fascinating facts we learned is that corals reproduce only once a year.  Called “simultaneous mass spawning ”, it occurs only one night a year.  While the actual night can’t be predicted, scientists can predict the week the event will happen.

For more information about visiting the center or becoming a volunteer, see the Coral Restoration Foundation website.

Florida Keys Wild Bird Rehabilitation Center

This not-for-profit organization has two facilities in Key Largo, Mission Wild Bird and Laura Quinn Wild Bird Sanctuary.  The two locations work together to rescue and rehabilitate injured or displaced wild birds, releasing them back to the wild or providing safe, humane shelter to those who cannot be released.  A large part of their work is educating us about healthy interactions with wild birds and their importance to ecosystems.

Valerie standing front of Florida Keys Wild Bird Rehabilitation Center

Mission Wild Bird

Most of the building (at Mile Marker 92) houses the Avian Rehabilitation Hospital , where sick, injured, and orphaned native and migratory birds are brought to be treated and cared for.  Although the public is not allowed inside the hospital and rehabilitation center, the building also contains the Gift Shop , and the Visitor Education Center .  Interpretive exhibits share the challenges birds face in their natural habitats, and steps that can be taken to protect them.

The birds are cared for at the hospital until they have recovered enough to be returned to the wild.  Should it be determined that a bird cannot survive in the wild due to its injuries and can live in captivity, it will find a permanent home at the Laura Quinn Wild Bird Sanctuary.

For more information, see the Mission Wild Bird webpage.

Laura Quinn Wild Bird Sanctuary

The sanctuary, covering over 7 acres (1.6 miles north of the hospital), is home to over 70 non-releasable birds.  It is open to the public 7 days a week from sunrise to sunset.

Enjoy a walk on the boardwalk to visit the birds.  Their enclosures are shaded, have natural perching areas and activities to keep them stimulated, giving the birds a safe and natural environment in which to live.  Educational signs are nearby giving information about each resident.  The boardwalk ends at Florida Bay, the perfect spot to enjoy sunset.

We saw several species of hawks, owls, gulls, herons, pelicans and more.  Be sure to see the daily pelican feeding sessions.

5 photos of different bird species

The sanctuary is staffed by a team of professionals, interns and volunteers who work tirelessly to feed and provide a safe environment for its residents.

While there are no admission fees at Laura Quinn, be sure to make a contribution to the donation boxes near the entrance to assist in the care of the birds.

Please note:  Pets are not allowed.  Assistance dogs are permitted.

For more information, see the Laura Quinn Wild Bird Sanctuary webpage.

Key Largo Diving, Snorkelling and Water Activities

Key Largo is known as a premiere spot for diving and snorkelling to see the marine life on the famous coral reefs.  Divers can investigate the artificial reefs created by sunken ships, including the Spiegel Grove and City of Washington .

The Florida Keys are home to one of three bronze statues called Christ of the Abyss .  Sculptor Guido Galletti sank the original bronze statue in the Mediterranean Sea in 1954.  Two others from the same mould were created in the early 1960’s.  One is in Grenada and the other was placed in about 25 feet of water near Key Largo Dry Docks and is a favorite of divers visiting the state park.

In addition to the cruises offered at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, there are several charter companies which go out to the reefs.  Florida Keys Tourism has a handy list of local diving tours and snorkel tours .

Sport fishermen can join a fishing charter or rent their own boat.  Local operators also rent kayaks and jet skis.

For swimming opportunities, head back to John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park to enjoy Cannon Beach and Far Beach .  They also rent kayaks, canoes and paddle boards.  Harry Harris Beach and Park is another beach option.

Hiking and Nature

The Key Largo area has some excellent trails to explore its stunning natural beauty.

John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park has 3 trails, each exploring different ecosystems.

The Wild Tamarind Trail (0.3 mile, linear) explores a tropical hardwood hammock.  These hammocks once covered much of the Florida Keys but today are greatly reduced due to both natural and man-made factors.

The Grove Trail (0.6 mile, linear) travels from the hammock environment to a tropical fruit grove, often filled with butterflies.

Valerie on boardwalk of Mangrove Trail Key Largo

The boardwalk of the Mangrove Trail (0.3 mile, loop) circles through the mangroves along the park’s paddling trail.  Mangroves provide food and habitat for a multitude of plants and animals.

Another area to explore is Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park (Mile Marker 106.5).

This park is unique.  Originally a condominium development was planned for the land (and some basic infrastructure was built) but it was never completed.  The area is now being allowed to return to nature.

There are 6 miles of trails to explore consisting of half-loops and full-loops through the hammocks.  These are the largest tracks of West Indian tropical hardwood hammock in the United States.

There are 84 protected species of plants and animals, including the rare Schaus swallowtail butterfly.  During bird migrations in April and October, enjoy the great bird watching opportunities.

We recommend hiking this park only during the winter months, Florida’s dry season. There are no mosquito control methods employed here.  Best to avoid this park anytime after the month of May, as the mosquitoes will quickly make your hike unpleasant.

Know Before You Go

Key largo vs key west.

When visiting the Florida Keys, many people wonder what the difference is between the cities of Key Largo and Key West.

Key Largo is a quiet, laid back town with plenty of opportunities to explore nature nearby.  Key West, on the other hand, has plenty of museums, artist galleries, restaurants and a lively night scene.

If you’ve only time for a day trip from Miami, then a visit to Key Largo is perfect.  With more time we definitely recommend travelling to Key West and exploring the entire Florida Keys archipelago.

22 Unique & Fun Things to do in Key Largo, FL

Table of Contents

1. Explore John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park

John Pennekamp State Park, Key Largo, Florida

Established in 1963 to preserve the only living coral reef in the country, John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park  is part of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and is the first underwater Park in the United States. It offers visitors and locals a multitude of experiences that cannot be missed.

Depending on your personal needs and desires, you can snorkel, dive or kayak in order to admire the coral reefs, the seagrass beds, and the mangrove swamps.

You can explore this beauty independently or join one of the scuba, snorkel, or glass-bottom boat tours.

The best way to see the underwater treasure is by diving but if you find this intimidating snorkeling is always a great idea. The clear waters will let enjoy the beauty of the coral reefs in both ways.

On land, there are plenty of picnic areas with picnic tables to relax and enjoy this unique tropical paradise.

Our day at John Pennekamp started with a trip out to the reef by boat for a morning of snorkeling on the reef . The visibility was fantastic and we saw a large amount of sea life.

Once back onshore, we spent a couple of hours walking the trails, hanging out on the beaches, and kayaking.

2. Enjoy a Fascinating Dive: The USS Spiegel Grove Wreck

Snorkeling in Key Largo, Florida Keys

If you enjoy scuba diving you will have an amazing time exploring the USS Spiegel Grove wreck. It has the length of two football fields giving passionate divers the chance to have a unique experience in the warm waters off of Key Largo.

Get lost in this breathtakingly enormous wreck and let the multitude of fishes that “call it home” amaze your eyes.

Admire the furry coat of corals and observe the barracuda and horse-eye jacks in their natural habitat while exploring the famous USS Spiegel Grove.

There are many dive operators that can offer you unforgettable tours of the wreck. Just make sure you book your trip early because everybody who visits Key Largo wants to catch a glimpse of this underwear landmark.

3. See the Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge

American Alligator in Florida

While most of Florida offers easy viewing of the American alligator, the Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge offers the opportunity to see the much rarer American crocodile.

The refuge was established in 1980 and is one of four national wildlife refuges in the Florida Keys. It preserves the native habitat environments of tropical hardwood hammocks, mangrove forests, and salt marshes.

The refuge is not open to the public, but they do offer a variety of educational programs that will get you behind the scenes. The Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge is located at 10750 County Road 905, Key Largo, Florida, 33037.

4. Stay at the Jules Undersea Lodge

If you’re a scuba diver, this is one of the most unique things you can do in the world! The Jules Undersea Lodge allows you to spend the night under the water in comfortable accommodations. The only catch, you have to actually dive down to your room.

You can book a room here: Jules’ Undersea Lodge .

5. Try Birdwatching at the Laura Quinn Wild Bird Sanctuary

white stork in Florida

The Laura Quinn Wild Bird Sanctuary is a well-established natural refuge for non-releasable birds. They have over 90 birds that call this refuge home and represent roughly 40 species.

If you are a bird nerd, like me, this is a fantastic place to both learn more about specific species and photograph them.

Entrance to the refuge is free, but if you’re able to make a $10 donation when you visit, this goes a long way to sustaining the refuge and its inhabitants.

6. Take an African Queen Canal Cruise

One of the most unique things to do in Key Largo is to take a canal cruise on the African Queen, a fully restored 1912 steamboat. Not to mention, this very steamboat was seen in the 1951 Humphrey Bogart film The African Queen .

The cruises operate daily leaving from the Marina Del Mar at mile marker 100. They last 1.5 hours and travel down the Port Largo Canals to the Atlantic Ocean before turning around. You can view the daily schedule and book your experience here .

7. Enjoy a Sunset Drink at Sundowners

Sundowners in Key Largo, Florida

One of the most fun nights we had in Key Largo was at Sundowners . Located right on the beach, this restaurant is known as ‘the place to be’ on Key Largo for drinks, food, entertainment, and unforgettable sunsets.

We will never forget the colors that painted the sky while we listened to island-tuned music, drink in hand, and the palm tree silhouettes swayed. You can visit for drinks, dinner or both.

With the atmosphere, it is a place to easily spend an entire evening enjoying the warm tropical air of the Florida Keys.

8. Bike or Walk the Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail

The Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail is a 90-mile paved trail that stretches from Key Largo to Key West. The longest continuous section of this trail happens to reside in Key Largo. Starting at mile marker 106, it stretches without interruption until mile marker 72 in Islamorada.

It is open and accessible for non-motorized activities including, hiking, bicycling, skating, fishing, paddling, and sightseeing. So it’s a great way to enjoy some quiet while soaking in the sunshine and island life.

Lina and David Stock fishing in the Florida Keys

You’ll be on an island and that has a direct correlation with good fishing! If you can think of nothing better than being out on the ocean and reveling in the thrill of the catch, then we highly recommend you charter a fishing boat and do just that.

Fishing is one of the best things to do in Key Largo and you’ll have a chance to learn and enjoy ocean fishing at its finest. It’s possible to book both private and shared charters, depending on your preference.

Length also depends on your preference, ranging from a couple of hours to all day. Most fishing trips include beverages and a crew of expert boatmen that will take you to all the hot spots they can find.

You can also book sportfishing trips if you’re after a more adrenaline-fueled experience and the chance to land a marlin.

10. Get in the Water Anywhere to Snorkel

Divergent Travelers in Key Largo, Florida

The Florida Keys are home to the only living reef accessible from the United States. This means that one of the best things to do in Key Largo is to hop in the water and do some snorkeling.

It is possible to snorkel from the beach in just about any location on the island. You can rent snorkel equipment from your resort or the local shops.

However, if you want to snorkel directly over some of the good reefs, we recommend a snorkel tour in John Pennekamp State Park.

These trips take you out into the ocean and anchor near accessible coral reef locations. This is the best snorkeling you can do in Key Largo. We saw a large variety of fish on our trip including barracuda and lobster.

11. Get in Touch with the Local Art

15. Feed the Tarpon at Robbie’s

Tarpon feeding at Robbies - things to do in Key Largo

Robbie’s is the stuff of legends when it comes to visiting the Florida Keys. No trip to Key Largo would be complete without a stop here to feed the massive tarpons that gather under the docks.

Fish is sold at the entrance to the dock. Make your way to the end and get ready for a thrill like no other.

Just be sure to keep a loose grip, you don’t want to lose a finger! That said, I think the pelicans are far more dangerous than the tarpon.

16. Grab a Brew at Florida Keys Brewing

Florida Keys Brewing

If you love craft beer, and who doesn’t!?, you’ll want to head to Florida Keys Brewing to sample some unique island-infused flavors.

The owners live everything Florida Keys and take pride in the brews, that they distribute throughout the Keys.

You’ll find interesting blends like the Hibiscus Kolsh, that completely embrace the island vibe. The entire tasting room is decorated with fun tie-dyed themes and you’ll even bump into a few locals during your visit.

Key Largo and Islamorada are so close to each other that you can enjoy all that they both offer while being based in Key Largo. Both islands offer plenty to do, but there are also a few uninhabited islands to check out between them too.

On these islands, you’ll find beautiful white sand beaches with very few people. These areas make great spots for sunbathing, picnics, snorkeling, and just plain enjoying being in the Caribbean.

In terms of being able to pull off and just enjoy a beach while in the Florida Keys, this stretch was by far the most impressive.

19. Visit the Windley Key Fossil Reef Geological State Park

Trees growing overtop coral walls in the Florida Keys

The special park is located on a piece of land that was formed with limestone and fossilized coral. In the early 1900s, it became the property of the Florida East Coast Railroad. They used the stone from the land to build the Overseas Railroad.

Following that project, the land was then used to produce a unique product called KeyStone until the 1960s.

While it’s no longer used for its resources, you can now visit the land and explore the quarry that holds some impressive sections of ancient coral.

A visit to the state park will teach you about the quarry, its operation and give you some insight into a part of Florida’s history.

17 Best Things To Do In Key Largo: Relax & Unwind

As a Florida resident, I’ve been vacationing in the Florida Keys for many years.  It’s the perfect place for a quick weekend getaway or a full on vacation.  Key Largo is one of the northern most keys and is only a little over 2 hours from where I live, how great is that?!  Yes, I feel like I already live in a vacation destination in Lake Worth Beach but there’s something special about getting out of town and going further south.  The weather is pretty similar to my area but the island-like laid back vibe really makes you feel like you’re in the middle of the Caribbean all while being close to home and not ever leaving the U.S!  In this post, we’re going through some of the best things to do in Key Largo to have a relaxing vacation.

Before we get started, you’re probably wondering where exactly is Key Largo? The Florida keys start at the very south end of Florida and locations go by the mile marker. Key Largo makes up from mile marker 107 to 91!

Have a Key Lime Colada

If you didn’t feel like you were on vacation yet, have a key lime colada and you’ll really get a sip of paradise.  This mix of Pina Colada and lime liquour are sure to bring a smile on your face.  Key Lime Pie is a staple in the Florida Key’s so you can call these the “adult” liquid version!

Skipper’s Dockside Restaurant  has the most delicious Key Lime Colada’s.

Or if you want to make one at home, check out my Homemade Key Lime Colada recipe.

Lay on a Hammock

I love me some quality hammock time.  They’re great for naps, reading, or just simply enjoying an ocean breeze.  What can be more relaxing than swaying between 2 palm trees over the water?!

Bring your favorite book or music and take a chill pill on a hammock overlooking the water of the Atlantic Ocean

Stay at a Classic Keys Hotel

I will be the first to admit that some of the hotels in the Keys are not your standard Marriott or chain hotel.  But that is part of the charm! Most local hotels are family owned and have so much to offer – just don’t expect a fancy high end place.

They look like nothing special from the main road but once you get onto the property, BOOM! … there’s a beach with Adirondack chairs and hammocks and tiki huts!  Some of them even have a boat slip if you’re lucky enough to bring one of those with you.   Check out The Seafarer or Rock Reef Resort  – both have boat slips.  The Rock Reef also has a boat ramp for easy access.

The last time we were in Key Largo, we stayed at another spot called Kona Kai Resort. It’s know for it’s lush botanical gardens and quaint Florida Keys atmosphere.

A lot of hotels, like the Kona Kai, will provide paddle boards and kayaks for you to use during your stay. We took the kayaks out almost every day. Watching the sunset while kayaking along the peaceful waters in Key Largo is just so relaxing!

If you’re looking for a different type of stay, there’s even a place where you can stay underwater. Check out Jules Undersea Lodge for more information on this. I haven’t tried this but it looks pretty cool!

Watch An Epic Sunset

One of the best parts about the Florida Keys is that you get both the sunrise and the sunset.  On the Atlantic / East side – the sunrise.  On the Bay / West side – the sunset.  And all right across the street from each other!

Most restaurants and hotels on the Bayside will get you a front row seat every night.

Snooks Bayside even has a countdown and rings a big horn when the sun is fully set every night!

The Playa Largo Marriott Key Largo is also one of my favorite places to watch the sunset.  The restaurant there, Sol by the Sea , is not your average hotel spot.  The decor is a nautical coastal chic theme – If I could steal all of their furnishing and wall hanging for my own house and backyard, I totally would!!  You don’t need to be a hotel guest to enjoy this charming atmosphere.  Get there a little early to secure a seat along the railing.

Magical Sunsets in Key Largo Florida

TIP: If you are traveling to the Florida keys, you don’t want to miss Key West. There are tons of free things to do in Key West and a more upbeat atmosphere.

Go Kayaking

Kayaking is a great low-key way to get out on the water and explore. Kayak rentals are relatively cheap for a whole day and some hotels even provide them for free. There are so many different places to explore on a kayak – through the mangroves or paddle out to your own private “island”.

The Spiegel Grove was a U.S. Navy Landing Ship Dock that was commissioned in 1956, named for the Ohio estate of President Rutherford B. Hayes. After the ship was decommissioned in 1989, Hurricane Dennis turned the ship upright on June 10, 2002.

Thus, it has become an incredibly popular spot for divers . Unfortunately, it cannot be seen well from snorkeling alone: its minimum depth is 45! Even so, its descent is not for the beginner diver. To see it, you must have knowledge of proof of certifications regarding diving in overhead environments.

After its sinking, the ship began to attract marine life. Today it is well on its way to becoming an entire reef ecosystem of its own. Marine biologists expect the natural corals to completely envelop the ship in a matter of time. Because of the ship’s size, it is larger than any natural reef structure in the Keys.

Among the coral and sea ferns, you’ll be able to see entire schools of shimmering smaller fish and colorful tropical fish. There are even large grouper that frequent the wreck. On the clearest days, the sandy bottom can be visible at a depth of 130 feet from the surface, making it one of the best things to do in Key Largo.

Florida Keys Wild Bird Rehabilitation Center

If you have a love of animals and all things avian, then you need to visit the Florida Keys Wild Bird Rehabilitation Center! Incorporated in 1988, they are dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of native and migratory wild birds. They also provide shelter for birds who cannot be released back into the wild.

In the sanctuary, you’ll see over 90 non-releasable birds of 40 different species. Every bird housed on the property passed through the Mission Wild Bird Hospital on the premises and was deemed non-releasable. This means they suffered injuries that prevent them from doing things like flying, perching, and walking.

Here they can live out their lives in a large enclosure with enriching activities. Each bird is given their appropriate food so they can maintain a healthy diet. You can walk through the sanctuary and interact with the birds every day! Unfortunately, no dogs are allowed.

Kids will love seeing the Pelican feeding! Every day, the interns feed the center’s resident Brown Pelicans at 8 AM and 2:30 PM. There’s even a gift shop next to the hospital filled with fun souvenirs like t-shirts, stuffed animals, tote bags, drink tumblers, and much more!

Go Kayaking

There are literally thousands of places to launch a kayak in Florida, but taking a paddle through the waters can be one of the best things to do in Key Largo. When you’re out on the water, the breeze gently going through your hair, you’ll remember why the Florida Keys are paradise.

If you’re looking for a good guided tour, check out Florida Bay Outfitters although you can launch independent of their tours. You can launch your own kayak if you bring one for a nominal fee. However, the launch fee is waived if you rent equipment. The store is well stocked and the staff never tries to oversell you!

You can launch from the shore of Blackwater Sound into Dusenberry Creek. This path will take you into lovely, quiet mangrove tunnels. Be warned though, it is a long paddle along windy open waters to get to Dusenberry Creek. The area at times may be infested with power-boats, too.

Consider launching from John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, which offers 2.5 miles of marked mangrove trails to explore. The park’s harbor concession rents kayaks and canoes. Or you can try Harry Harris Park to kayak through the oceanside islands of Rodriguez Key, Tavernier Key, and Dove Creek!

A kayak rests next to a mangrove tree, one of the best things to do in Key Largo.

Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park

When you’re in the Keys, sometimes it’s nice to see a side of nature that isn’t just beaches and ocean. One of the best things to do in Key Largo is to explore Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park!

This area was once slated to become a condominium development! We’re so glad that never came to pass because it would have meant tearing down one of the largest tracts of West Indian tropical hardwood hammocks in the United States!

Dagny Johnson State Park, for short, houses 84 different protected species of plants and animals. These include wild cotton, mahogany mistletoe, and the American crocodile. Walk the Port Bougainville Trail to see these incredible creatures or go on a trek with a Ranger to guide you!

The Port Bougainville trail begins at the park’s main entrance where you’ll hear warblers playing and flitting by. Small birds fly through the bushes and you can see spider webs glistening in the morning dew. When you look up, you’ll see the incredibly extensive tree canopy making this one of the best things to do in Key Largo.

African Queen Canal Cruise

In case this next entry has you cocking your head, yes. This is that African Queen. Film buffs will know it from the 1951 movie of the same name starring Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn. Taking a ride on the famous speedboat is one of the best things to do in Key Largo!

The African Queen was built in England in 1912. She was still in service when she appeared in the 1951 John Huston movie. When she finally retired from international work in 1982, she became the pride and joy of Key Largo. Now a National Historic site, you can actually take a ride on this steamboat!

Completely restored, take a ride through the waters of Key Largo along the Port Largo Canals and through the Atlantic Ocean. You’ll see local points of interest and panoramic views of the Keys! You can even ask the Captain for a turn at the helm!

There are five cruises daily to choose from: 10 AM, 12 PM, 2 PM, 4 PM, and 6 PM. Each cruise lasts an hour and a half. Tickets cost $59 for adults.

Harry Harris Park

When you’re looking for a day of outdoor fun that combines the best of a beach and a recreational park, then you need to go to Harry Harris Park. The apple of Monroe County’s eye, a visit here is one of the best things to do in Key Largo.

The name of the game at Harry Harris Park? Amenities, amenities amenities! Including the beach area, there are 11 pavilions, 12 barbecues, 34 picnic tables, one full-size basketball court, a playground, two baseball, and even a tidal pool for the little ones to wade in!

Fisherman and boaters can launch their boats from the jetty as well! Harry Harris Park is also a popular spot for kayakers too! Paddle through the oceanside islands of Rodriguez Key, Tavernier Key, and Dove Creek!

Dogs are allowed on leash, although they need to be kept off the beach. While swimming is more common, don’t be afraid to venture out and do some snorkeling. Always remember to put up a dive flag so that people know you’re there!

Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge

Any Floridian will tell you that alligators are the number one animal force to be feared in the state. Did you know that their often confused counterparts are found right here in Florida? The Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1980 was to protect and preserve critical habitat for the American crocodile!

Part of the Florida Keys National Wildlife Refuges Complex, this is one of the best things to do in Key Largo. It spans over 6,700 acres with 650 acres of open water.

When you explore, you’ll notice a mosaic of habitat types. These range from tropical hardwood hammock, mangrove forests, and salt marshes. You’ll also be able to observe the eight federally listed endangered species that call this place home.

If you are determined to see the Crocodiles, we advise going in the early winter months when the Crocodiles will venture up onto the land. Early spring yields sightings of many avian varieties during bird migration season. Head back in July and August if you want to see the Crocodiles’ eggs hatching!

This is truly one of the best things to do in the Upper Keys!!

An aerial view of Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge, the only place to see crocodiles in the United States.

Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail

Sure, you can drive the Seven Mile Bridge on a  road trip , but there’s a different way to experience the Florida Keys. One of the best things to do in the Keys is to take it all in from the Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail.

Many existing pathways and bridges from the remains of Henry Flagler’s Florida East Coast Railway make up the trail. Currently, it features 90 linear miles of transportation corridor, soon to be 106 miles in total spanning from Key West to Key Largo.

The inspiration for the Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail parallels Highway 1 in California. The FKOHT today aspires to be a National Scenic Highway and All-American Road.

Pedestrian and bicycle-friendly, here you can go hiking, running, bicycling, skating, sightseeing, fishing, and paddling. Always check the weather and fishing pier closures before heading out. Conditions on the bridges may be treacherous.

From the trail, you can access many points of interest like  Everglades National Park , Biscayne National Park, the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, and more! You also have access to 10  Florida State Parks  as well as  private campsites .

The Florida Keys Heritage Trail sits over the waters of Key Largo.

Florida Keys Marine Sanctuary

You’ve heard a lot of about the best snorkeling in the Keys, but we’re here to tell you the most beautiful places lie within the Florida Keys Marine Sanctuary. From beautiful coral reefs, marine life, to mysterious shipwrecks, this is one of the best things to do in Key Largo.

The Florida Keys Marine Sanctuary is actually a 2,800 square nautical mile area surrounding the Florida Keys and reaching into the Atlantic Ocean. This is actually the only coral reef in North American and it’s the third largest barrier reef in the world. Only the Great Barrier Reef and Mesoamerican Reef are larger.

When you’re boating through the area you might see manatees and even sea turtles ! If you go snorkeling, your views are breathtaking through the crystal clear waters. There’s no telling what you might see!

If you don’t want to charter your own boat, you can take some fabulous tours that will lead you to the best of the best in the reef. Take the Half Day Snorkel Trip on Reefs in the Florida Keys for only $55 per person. If you don’t want to get wet, you can still get stunning views on a Sunset cruise through the waters.

Jules Undersea Lodge

Why stay at a VRBO or a hotel when your lodging can be an adventure in and of itself? At the Jules Undersea Lodge, you’re in for an experience like no other. Your hotel room? It’s underwater!

The Jules Undersea Lodge is the only underwater hotel in the United States. It is 30 feet deep sitting literally on the ocean floor. Guests must scuba dive to get to their rooms! Your room will be stocked with plenty of water, soda, and iced tea. You’ll even get a pizza delivery from a scuba diver himself!

If you’re not an experienced scuba diver, have no fear. Jules Undersea Lodge provides beginner scuba diving courses to get new certified divers into the water! They also offer advanced diving lessons all in the Jules’ Lagoon. No matter your level of comfort, the instructors here will help you!

If you don’t want to stay overnight at the lodge, you can still take guided scuba diving tours of Jules’ Lagoon. Here you can learn and see the beautiful ecosystems that have thrilled guests for years. This will also allow you to tour and get an inside look at the Underwater Lodge itself!

Island Dolphin Care

Dolphins are incredibly smart creatures. They have their own language and travel in pods. At Island Dolphin Care, one of the most incredible non-profit organization, the volunteers here use interactions as therapy for veterans with PTSD and children with special needs.

At Island Dolphin Care, these dolphins are not bred in captivity. They don’t have to perform shows that can be exhausting and mind-numbing for the animals. Island Dolphin Care prides itself by taking a “zero exploitation” policy with its dolphins. They don’t use their dolphins for monetizing purposes.

Island Dolphin Care plans therapies that are tailored to your special needs. They offer therapies for PTSD, autism, developmental disabilities and more. The therapies can help with sensory integration, attention, fine motor skills, and even your attention span.

You can even attend a Yoga class on the docks. An all-level flow class, you will meet either in the morning or in the evening by candlelight. Dolphins will be curious and swim by to see what you’re doing! There is no cost, but the suggested donation is $10 per class. Remember, this is a non-profit, and this is an easy way to support an incredible organization.

Snorkel Key Largo

Halfway between Key Largo and  Key West , you’ll find a group of  islands  beckoning you with the call to adventure. Curry Hammock State Park protects mangrove swamps, Rockland hammocks, and seagrass beds that are essential to the Florida Keys ecosystem.

Rent a kayak or paddleboard and take your choice between two trails on Little Crawl Key. You’ll paddle your way through a mangrove tunnel, deep lagoons, sandbars, and an open ocean. If you look closely at the water’s bottom, you’ll see starfish, horseshoe crabs, and upside-down jellyfish!

The shorter of the two paths is 1.5 miles and circles Little Crawl Key in approximately one hour. The longer of the two paths is 5 miles long and requires at least four hours. But this path will take you along mangroves and out to another island for kayak fishing.

If the tide is low, the mangrove tunnels may be difficult or impossible to navigate. Not to worry, you can enjoy the sandbar just to the east of the kayak launch instead!

Single kayaks cost $17.20 and tandem kayaks and stand-up paddleboards cost $21.50 per day to rent! Always check the weather before going, as the park does not rent out equipment when there is a small craft advisory.

John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park

Named after John D. Pennekamp, a former newspaper editor for the Miami Herald and noted Everglades conservationist, John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park was developed in 1963 as the United States' first park under the sea. The state park is 25 miles long and 3 miles wide, and it is home to many aquatic plant and animal species, in addition to mangroves and various types of birds.

Visitors can enjoy the park in a number of ways. Water enthusiasts can admire colorful coral reef and the popular Christ of the Deep underwater statue on snorkeling and scuba diving tours , while those who would rather stay dry can sign up for a glass-bottom boat tour. There are also 47 campsites and designated spots for swimming, fishing and picnicking.

Everglades National Park Everglades National Park

Spanning 1.5 million acres of wetland across South Florida, Everglades National Park is a worthwhile daytrip for outdoor enthusiasts visiting Key Largo. There are multiple entrances into the park scattered throughout the Sunshine State; the closest to Key Largo is the Ernest F. Coe Visitor Center in Homestead, which is about a 37-mile drive north.

Upon arriving at Everglades National Park (ideally in your own car, as there is no public transportation and car services have trouble navigating the area), visitors will find the largest subtropical wilderness in America. Manatees, crocodiles, alligators, Florida panthers and other wildlife all call the park home, as do a variety of plant species and diverse ecosystems. Outdoor activities abound for visitors of all ages, including biking and hiking trails, bird-watching, kayaking, camping, fishing and many ranger-led tours and programs. Past visitors were especially fond of the nearly mile-long Anhinga Trail and the tram tour through Shark Valley , and many others were floored by how easy it was to spot alligators and other wildlife throughout the park.

Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary

Most of Key Largo's dive sites exist within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, a protected area covering 2,900 square nautical miles. Developed in 1990 to protect precious coral reefs and other aquatic wildlife, the sanctuary is a joint venture between the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the state of Florida. Popular dive sites off the coast of Key Largo include Grecian Rocks, French Reef and Molasses Reef, and divers will also find several nearby shipwrecks to explore.

Recent travelers who took dive trips within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary had nothing but good things to say. Molasses Reef was deemed a great spot for snorkeling due to its shallow waters, while Grecian Rocks earned praise for its clear waters and abundance of fish.

Florida Keys Wild Bird Rehabilitation Center Florida Keys Wild Bird Rehabilitation Center free

The Florida Keys Wild Bird Rehabilitation Center is located a short 7-mile drive southwest of Key Largo in Tavernier, Florida. It consists of two facilities: an animal hospital where wounded birds are rehabilitated, and the Laura Quinn Wild Bird Sanctuary, which houses more than 90 birds (across 40 species) that cannot be released back into the wild due to sustained injuries. The sanctuary prides itself on providing humane, natural enclosures where the birds can live out the rest of their lives comfortably. Visitors can embark on a self-guided tour through the habitat to see hawks, owls, pelicans, vultures, herons and more. (Note: The animal hospital section of the center is not open to the public unless you are dropping off an injured bird.)

Recent travelers praised the friendly and informative staff, diverse bird population, live feedings and sunset views on the property. The Laura Quinn Wild Bird Sanctuary is open 365 days a year between sunrise and sunset. Admission is free, though the rehabilitation center does suggest a donation of $10 per person to keep the facility's mission running smoothly. To learn more, visit the Florida Keys Wild Bird Rehabilitation Center's website .

At Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park, visitors can traverse more than 6 miles of accessible nature trails by bicycle or on foot. The park was named for Dagny Johnson, a local environmental activist. It's also home to one of the country's largest tracts of West Indian tropical hardwood hammock. The park features 84 protected plant and animal species, including flora like mahogany mistletoe and fauna like the American crocodile. For added convenience, visitors will find a picnic pavilion, as well as on-site restrooms. Most of the trails are paved, making them accessible to wheelchair users.

Recent travelers said the park is a relaxing place to stop and explore for a bit, noting that the park's relatively small size and paved trails were easy to manage for visitors of all ages. However, they stressed to load up on bug spray to combat the droves of mosquitos – especially during the summer.

African Queen Canal Cruise African Queen Canal Cruise

Built in 1912, this iconic steamboat's claim to fame is its role in the 1951 film, "The African Queen," starring Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn. The vessel has a storied history that spans more than a century and several continents, but it has resided in Key Largo since 1982. The African Queen underwent a $70,000 restoration in time for its 2012 centennial, and today it offers 90-minute dinner outings (with a stop at a waterfront restaurant) and canal cruise tours to patrons at 10 a.m., noon, 2, 4 and 6 p.m. daily.

Recent passengers offered mostly positive reviews and praised the knowledgeable, enthusiastic tour guides and relaxing ride through the canals. However, past travelers noted that an interest in the movie is a must, otherwise you may find the experience a bit dull.

Spiegel Grove Spiegel Grove

In June 2002, a retired Navy ship called the USS Spiegel Grove was intentionally sunk 6 miles off the coast of Key Largo to support the underwater ecosystem as a manmade reef. The 510-foot vessel is one of the largest ships ever to be sunk for that purpose, and it attracted fish and other marine life right away.

Fast forward to present day, and the wreck serves not only the environment, but also the diving community. It is a favorite dive spot among many recent reviewers thanks to its unique features and abundance of colorful fish. However, because of the massive size and positioning of this artificial reef (the ship resettled nose-up in 2005 after Hurricane Dennis, with its deepest spot at 130 feet), instructors recommend that only experienced divers take on Spiegel Grove. In fact, some areas of the ship are considered too dangerous even for those with high-level certifications.

The best spots for snorkeling in Key Largo, from wrecks to reefs

Jun 3, 2022 • 5 min read

A7D5B1 A YOUNG SNORKELER WATCHES A SCHOOL OF GLASS MINNOWS NEAR CAPTAIN TOM S WRECK KEY LARGO FLORIDA

The closest part of the Florida Keys to the mainland, Key Largo is a great spot for snorkeling adventures © Stephen Frink / Alamy

The Florida Keys dangle off the southern coast of the state like a string of pearls floating in Florida Bay, linked together by the Overseas Highway, more formally known as US Rt 1. But that’s just the view from the land. Get out onto the water, all part of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary , and you’ll discover an underwater playground.

The waters of the Keys are home to some 260 species of tropical fish, from toothsome barracuda to a rainbow of wrasses (plus sea stars, sea urchins, spiny lobsters, and a palette of shrimp species worthy of a Van Gogh painting). Throw in some turquoise waters, coral reefs, and plenty of underwater scenery – a giant underwater statue of Jesus, anyone? – and you’ve got a great snorkeling destination that rewards beginners and seasoned snorkelers alike.

Most visitors associate the islands with Key West , the last island in the chain that you can reach by car (technically closer to Havana than Miami ) but Key Largo is the closest major island to the mainland, to the point that it can feel indistinguishable from it. There's still great snorkeling to be had though – here are the best places to mask up and dive in.

Snorkeling dos & don'ts in Key Largo

You can access Key Largo's John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park by car, but to reach offshore spots around the island, you’ll need to come on a charter tour by boat. If you see a destination listed here that you like the look of, ask your charter captain if a visit is part of their normal tour, or if they charge extra to take you there.

Also note that some local snorkel sights have a relatively shallow bottom, so follow proper snorkeling etiquette and keep your feet and flippers as far from the coral as possible. Touching coral, or even the force of a strong kick, can irreparably damage the reef.

Explore John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park from land

The most popular snorkeling destination in Key Largo, John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park is just shy of 60 years old. The nation's first underwater park first opened in 1963, and it's still packing in tourists today. In fact, that’s why we include the park here – because almost everyone who comes to Key Largo comes to Pennekamp.

You can walk to two snorkeling beaches in the park, but you won’t be spotting any coral, although there will be fish darting around. This is sandy bottom shore snorkeling – great for younger kids, beginners, or those who aren’t confident swimmers. More experienced snorkelers will want to swim out to the remains of an 18th-century Spanish shipwreck (about 100ft offshore by the park), or try some more ambitious spots around Key Largo.

Snorkeling at Grecian Rocks, Key Largo, in Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary

Break out with a boat tour at Pennekamp

You can’t swim out to the coral at Pennekamp, but the park operates 2.5-hour boat tours that get you out onto the reefs (adult/child $39/35). These tours can be crowded, but again, they’re a good option for beginners, partly because you can hire park staff members as snorkeling guides ($60, plus $15 for each additional person, up to a maximum of six snorkelers). You'll see a wide variety of sea life – some of the more iconic species spotted include parrotfish and spiny Caribbean lobsters.

Discover the secret of Sea Gardens

Okay, we admit that "secret" is an exaggeration, but Sea Gardens is one of the less-visited snorkeling spots off Key Largo, partly because this is a shallow reef area. The reef is also known as Mosquito Bank – although that’s obviously not quite as appealing as a name! – and it lies between Molasses Key and Key Largo. You’ll find some fish here, but the big draw is large clusters of soft coral , which bend in the tides like a grove of underwater trees.

A snorkeler swims past the Statue of Christ of the Deep in the Florida Keys

Get wet at Dry Rocks

What’s in a name? This is an area of so-called "spur and groove" reefs – basically, coral canyons – and the tops of the formations can be exposed at low tide. What remains decidedly wet at Dry Rocks is a 9ft statue of Jesus known as the Christ of the Deep, intentionally placed here in 1965. The statue sits in about 25ft of water, and is often surrounded by barracuda and rays, both of which are docile around snorkelers and divers. The statue is a replica of the Christ of the Abyss sculpture near Portofino in Italy.

Slow down for the scenery at Molasses Reef

Molasses Reef is the most visited reef in the Keys, and a highlight of any snorkeling trip to the islands. The reef, perhaps most famous for its brain coral, is located about 6 miles offshore, and thus attracts a wider variety of bigger marine fauna, including a good number of sea turtles. The drawbacks? As mentioned above, Molasses Reef is popular – there are some 32 mooring buoys for snorkeling boats here.

The snorkeling here is also highly weather-dependent, and tour companies will be more cautious coming this far offshore in choppy conditions. Still, if you can find a willing captain and a clear day, this is some of the finest snorkeling in the Lower 48.

Enter the underwater world of Elbow Reef

Elbow Reef is a series of spur and groove coral formations located about 6 nautical miles southeast of Key Largo. The crooked reef has been the bane of many a ship, including the City of Washington , which ran aground and sank here in 1917. The 325ft-long underwater ruin (surrounded by a circle of debris) sits in relatively shallow water at around 25ft, and it serves as a hotel and way station for all sorts of sea life, from turtles to nurse sharks, making this one of the Key’s most snorkel-friendly shipwrecks.

Many of the sites described here are good for both snorkeling and diving, and the shallow reef at Snapper Ledge is no exception, with coral from 15ft to 25ft. Get in the water here and you’ll see how the ledge earned its name – there are clouds of Yellowtail Snapper here, coruscating through the currents like a lemon-hued tornado. Also be on the lookout for giant boulder brain coral, nurse sharks, and moray eels, among other impressive marine life. The reef is about 7 nautical miles south of Key Largo.

Florida Keys Itinerary: The Ultimate 5-Day Trip

Florida Keys Itinerary: The Ultimate 5-Day Trip

Oh the Florida Keys…

Full of so much natural beauty, rich history, and no shortage of great activities, there are many great ways to experience this unique destination. Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon, heck you could easily spend a week in Key West alone! But in our opinion, the best way to experience the magic of the Florida Keys is too see them all by taking a road trip.

Behold, our ultimate 5-day itinerary through the Florida Keys!

DAY ONE: MIAMI to ISLAMORADA

When travelling to The Keys, you’ve got several options to get there including flying to Miami International, Key West International, as well as several cruise options from other locations in Florida. We arrived early in the morning in Miami, rented a car, and drove about an hour and a half south to the top of The Keys.

key largo presentation

Our first stop on our Florida Keys itinerary was John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. Located just past Key Largo,  John Pennekamp  is the first undersea park in the US and covers roughly 70 square miles of mangroves, coral reefs, and wildlife. We were truly impressed with how well managed the park is and the passion that the park employees have for protecting and sharing its natural wonder.

They offer various activities such as snorkeling, scuba, glass-bottom boat tours, as well as boat and kayak rentals. We opted for the snorkeling tour, which takes you on a half-hour boat ride out to the reef. During the boat ride, our tour leaders Doug and Dean did a great job of providing us with background on the park, what types of wildlife we might see out there, a safety briefing, several great nautical jokes, and even a snorkeling lesson for those who were first-timers.

At the reef, we saw countless tropical fish, colorful coral, someone even saw a sea turtle! We also got to check out the famous “Famous Christ of the Deep” statue, which was super cool to see. Overall this was a fantastic way to spend an afternoon, we can’t say enough about how great our guides were!

After working up an appetite snorkelling we checked into our room for the night at The Fisher Inn Resort to freshen up for dinner. Very recently renovated, the Fisher Inn is a modern, stylish and comfortable place right on water with various activities and boat access available. We loved what they’ve done with the place! An ideal spot to stay in Islamorada.

FLORIDA KEYS ITINERARY DAY TWO : ISLAMORADA to KEY WEST

An unassuming spot right off the highway, Robbie’s offers an eclectic mix of outdoor shops, food vendors and, our personal favorite, tarpon feeding. For those who don’t know, tarpon are MASSIVE sport fish that are spectacular to see swimming around and launching out of the water. What’s also cool about them is that they don’t have teeth, so you can buy a bucket of fish and feed the giants hanging out by the dock at Robbie’s.

It’s a bit adrenaline-pumping at first as these huge mouths come out of the water snatching the fish right out of your hands, but it’s unlike anything else. We liked it so much we got another two buckets of fish! Just watch out for the pesky pelicans 😛 Oh, and we saw a manatee come right up to the edge of the dock! It was wild.

key largo presentation

After watching these giant creatures feed for so long, we started to get hungry ourselves, so we went for brunch at Robbie’s Marina restaurant, The Hungry Tarpon . A fantastic spot with amazing breakfast, we opted for the “alligator reef” Mexican scramble and the lobster frittata with hollandaise sauce (OMGGG wow!).

If you’re spending any time in Islamorada, Robbie’s Marina and The Hungry Tarpon are an absolute must.

We departed Robbie’s around noon and made our way down to Key West.

Upon arrival in Key West, we checked in to our home for the next three days,  The Southernmost Beach Resort . An absolutely immaculate resort, we could not have imagined a better place to stay in Key West. Located at the quiet end of Duval Street, The Southernmost Beach Resort features fantastic rooms, beaches, pools, and bars and is the perfect spot for couples or families looking to stay in a more tranquil part of Key West. They also offer bike rentals which we found to be the best way to get around Key West.

key largo presentation

We stayed in the historic and beautiful La Mer House, in a gorgeous King room. Our house hosts made us feel extremely welcome and made sure that we had an exceptional stay. La Mer and Dewey house offer an exclusive breakfast spread every morning, and relaxing, delightful refreshments every afternoon. There was always a delicious selection of cheeses, deli meats, fresh fruit, and sweets, as well as a made-to-order chef’s special at breakfast. This is was a great time to recharge and relax, as well as socialize with our hosts and the other guests.

After our afternoon refreshments, we headed to the docks to hop aboard The Wind & Wine Sunset Sail with Danger Charters . Note: we were able to call and book this tour just a few hours in advance, but for most tours, it is recommended to book most tours 24 hours in advance to guarantee a spot, especially during the busy seasons.

Contrary to what you may assume from the name, Danger Charters offers an exceptionally relaxing sunset sail. What’s unique about them is that they offer a wine tasting while you sail! We sampled 8 different wines and various gourmet appetizers as we sailed and enjoyed the sunset. The crew was exceptional, ensuring that we were always taken care of, sharing interesting tidbits and anecdotes about The Keys, and engaging in great conversation. They also offer craft beers and non-alcoholic drinks for any non-wine drinkers.

The sunsets of Key West are truly spectacular and we would recommend seeing at least one of them from a sunset cruise.

FLORIDA KEYS ITINERARY DAY THREE:  THE DRY TORTUGAS

On day three, we checked off a bucket list item, The Dry Tortugas! Located 70 miles off the coast of Key West, Dry Tortugas National Park is famous for its spectacular waters and its prize historic feature, Fort Jefferson.

key largo presentation

You can explore Fort Jefferson and the Dry Tortugas via a day-trip offered by Yankee Freedom . Trips depart from Key West daily aboard a large 250 passenger ocean-going catamaran that takes about 2 hours to make the crossing. Be warned that if there are strong winds, the seas can get quite rough, so be sure to check current conditions and take any necessary precautions to prevent motion sickness.

Along the way, the wonderful staff provided us with information on the geography and history of the area. Our lead guide, Hollywood, talked about the dynamic nature of the Tortugas and the key roles that they played for sailors in the early years of the US. He also pointed out some real-life treasure hunters who were searching for the remaining $600,000,000 treasure of two Spanish Galleons that went down in the area.

About an hour and half into the crossing, Fort Jefferson appears on the horizon. As you approach this immense structure in the middle of nowhere, one question comes pops into everyone’s mind, “Why on earth is this thing here??” Well, Hollywood explained everything once inside the fort, but you’ll have to visit yourself to find out 😉

Fort Jefferson is chilling. As you walk the moat around it or view the spectacular waters from atop its three story high roof, you really appreciate how much work went into building this spectacle and imagine what life would have been for fort dwellers. I can’t speak highly enough about how incredible exploring the fort and the islands was, and I’d love to go back and camp on the island for a night or two next time. Imagine the stars!

After a few hours exploring the Dry Tortugas, we reboarded the Yankee Freedom III and made our way back to Key West.

We made it back just in time to catch the sunset from  Bistro 245 at Margaritaville Resort . As I mentioned before, Key West sunsets cannot be missed!

key largo presentation

Bistro 245 is right next to sunset square and the upstairs bar is a great place to get a view above the crowds and enjoy the end of the day with a margarita in hand. The crowds tend to leave once the sun goes down, but make sure to stay a little longer as the best part of the sunset usually happens 10-15 minutes  after  the sun goes below the horizon.

For dinner on day three, we hopped in the car and drove up to a local favorite,  Matt’s Stock Island Kitchen & Bar . Their aptly anointed “American coastal comfort food” features gourmet takes on the classics and fresh seafood all in a great location that earned them OpenTable’s 2018 Diners’ Choice Award for best ambiance. We highly recommend the crab beignets (uhh, yes please!!) and the black grouper.

FLORIDA KEYS ITINERARY DAY FOUR:  BREAKFAST OF A LIFETIME

Latitudes  is an absolute treat. Located on Sunset Key –  just a 6-minute complimentary ferry ride across from Key West – Latitudes and its executive chef Jerry Crocker offer a “work of art” menu that incorporates fresh locally sourced fish and tropical fruits, all in a spectacular setting. (If Sunset Key sounds familiar to you, it could be because Oprah rented out every cottage on the island one time for her friends and family).

key largo presentation

Latitudes offers an exceptional menu for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. If you go for breakfast, treat yourself to the lobster benedict, you will not regret it.

After breakfast, we puttered around Sunset Key before hopping back on the ferry to Key West.

We spent most of the day exploring the streets of Key West. We walked the boardwalks, biked up and down Duval Street, checked out the quaint architecture, and then relaxed on the beach at The Southermost Beach Resort.

Following afternoon refreshments at the Resort, we made our way back to the piers to board our second sunset sail, this time with  Sebago . Aboard Sebago’s large catamaran you’ll find friendly staff, lots of deck space, bottomless beer, margaritas and sangria, plus a cash bar. We made a bunch of new friends while out on the water and although we prefer the Danger Charters experience, Sebago definitely provides a good economical option.

key largo presentation

Upon arriving back at the dock we headed down the boardwalk and popped in for dinner at Turtle Kraals, another Key West classic. We sat outside up top with a great view of the marina and enjoyed a couple of key lime margaritas with delicious conch fritters, ribs, and ceviche.

FLORIDA KEYS ITINERARY DAY FIVE:  KEY WEST TO MARATHON

Key West, it’s been great! Time to work our way back.

After a superb breakfast at La Mer House, we said goodbye to our gracious hosts and headed north. We headed up to  Lazy Dog  where we had rebooked our kayak excursion from earlier in the week.

Kayaking through the mangroves is without a doubt the best way to see them. We were able to see all kinds of marine life (PLUS super cool iguanas!) and paddle through channels where mangroves were literally growing above our heads. The pace of the tour was relaxing and our guide, Lindsay, was friendly, knowledgeable, and ecologically responsible.

We came off the water, bid adieu to the fantastic Lazy Dog staff and made our way up the highway to our destination for the night,  The Tranquility Bay Beach House Resort  in Marathon.

We had worked up an appetite kayaking and so it was the perfect time to check out their on-site restaurant,  The Butterfly Cafe . Remember how I mentioned above about the Yellowtail Snapper? Well, this is where we discovered its magic.

Yellowtail Snapper is a Florida Keys speciality, so as per the chef’s recommendation, we both had it at The Butterfly Cafe, and it was game-changingly delicious.

We spent the rest of the day exploring the incredible grounds of the Resort. We hung out on the beach, grabbed a drink at the Tiki Bar, and putted on the putting greens (Lauren won). They also have kayaks and jet skis to take out, but we had already had our day out on the water. Tranquillity Bay is a fantastic place to stay for families and couples alike as their beautiful multi-bedroom units provide full kitchens, balconies, and plenty of amenities.

key largo presentation

For our last dinner in The Keys, we went to  The Lighthouse Grill  at Faro Blanco Resort. They offer a flight of local craft beers and amazing seafood – the scallops with Boursin risotto was absolutely fantastic. Although we went for dinner this would be a great place for happy hour to catch the sunset and enjoy the goings on of the marina.

The next morning, we woke up and made our way back to Miami airport, from where we flew home. On your way back, make sure to take the highway 1 route, as our GPS suggested the backroads, which was a lot of stops and starts on one-way roads.

Overall, our trip to  The Florida Keys  exceeded our expectations. It’s hard to find a place with so much beauty, history, and great things to see and do. You can do as little or as much as you want, and have an incredible time. When we go back – which we surely will! – here are some of the things on our list that we didn’t have time for this time around: hire a fishing charter for the day, visit the Turtle Hospital in Marathon, check out the craft breweries, visit the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum, and so much more! If you’re looking for a full list, check out our other blog of  9 epic things to do in the Florida Keys.
