Speech on Honey Bee

Honey bees, nature’s tiny workers, buzz around creating sweetness in our lives. They’re not just about honey, but play a vital role in our world.

Can you imagine a world without these buzzing wonders? The thought is quite unsettling! Let’s appreciate these small creatures and their big impact.

1-minute Speech on Honey Bee

Good day, everyone. Today, we will talk about a small but significant creature, the honey bee.

Honey bees are best known for the sweet honey they make. They collect nectar from flowers and change it into honey in their bodies. This honey is stored in the hive and used as food in winter when flowers are not blooming. But do you know, we humans also enjoy this honey? It’s not just sweet, but also packed with nutrients and health benefits.

But it’s not just about honey. Honey bees play a key role in nature. They are like nature’s little helpers. They help plants grow by spreading pollen from one flower to another. This is called pollination. Many of our favourite fruits and vegetables need this process to grow. Without honey bees, it would be difficult to have apples, strawberries, and even almonds!

In the end, honey bees show us the power of teamwork, the sweetness of hard work, and the importance of taking care of our environment. They might be small, but their impact is big. So, let’s appreciate and protect our honey bees. Thank you.

2-minute Speech on Honey Bee

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, today we are going to talk about a little creature with a mighty role. Yes, we’re talking about the humble honey bee. You might know them as the makers of the sweet honey you love on your toast, but they do so much more.

Honey bees are in fact some of the hardest workers on our planet. Each bee has a job. Some bees are workers, who gather food. Others are drones, whose job is to mate with the queen. Then, there is the queen bee, the mother of all bees in the hive. They all work together in perfect harmony to keep their hive running smoothly.

Now, why should we care about these tiny creatures buzzing around our gardens? Because honey bees play a huge role in the food we eat. As they move from flower to flower, they carry pollen on their bodies, helping plants to make seeds and grow. This is called pollination. Many of our favourite fruits and vegetables, like apples, strawberries, and cucumbers, depend on honey bees for pollination. Without these hardworking bees, these foods might disappear!

Sadly, honey bees around the world are in danger. They face many threats like pesticides, loss of flowers to feed on, and changes in the weather. When bees are in danger, our food is in danger too. So, it’s up to us to help the bees.

How can we help? It’s easy! We can plant more flowers in our gardens and avoid using harmful chemicals. We can also learn more about bees and teach others about their importance. Even the smallest action can make a big difference for our buzzing friends.

In closing, let’s remember the value of the tiny honey bee. They not only give us sweet honey but also help our food grow. They teach us about teamwork and hard work. They might be small, but they are mighty. So, next time you see a honey bee buzzing around a flower, take a moment to thank it for its hard work. After all, our world would not be the same without them.

10 facts about honey bees!

Find out all about our brilliant bees.

Calling all budding – or should we say buzz -ing – young naturalists! Join National Geographic Kids as we get the lowdown on one of our planet’s most fascinating insects in our ten facts about h oney bees !

Facts about honey bees

Facts about honey bees

1.  Honey bees are super-important pollinators for flowers, fruits and vegetables. This means that they help other plants grow! Bees transfer pollen between the male and female parts, allowing plants to grow seeds and fruit.

2.  Honey bees live in hives (or colonies). The members of the hive are divided into three types:

Queen : One queen runs the whole hive. Her job is to lay the eggs that will spawn the hive’s next generation of bees. The queen also produces chemicals that guide the behaviour of the other bees.

Workers : these are all female and their roles are to forage for food (pollen and nectar from flowers), build and protect the hive, clean and circulate air by beating their wings. Workers are the only bees most people ever see flying around outside the hive.

Drones : These are the male bees, and their purpose is to mate with the new queen. Several hundred live in each hive during the spring and summer. But come winter, when the hive goes into survival mode, the drones are kicked out!

3.  What are these buzzing bugs most famous for? Delicious honey ! But did you know they produce honey as food stores for the hive during winter? Luckily for us, these efficient little workers produce 2-3 time more honey than they need, so we get to enjoy the tasty treat, too! 4. If the queen bee dies, workers will create a new queen by selecting a young larva (the newly hatched baby insects) and feeding it a special food called “ royal jelly “. This enables the larva to develop into a fertile queen.

Facts about honey bees

5. Honey bees are fab flyers. They fly at a speed of around  25km per hour and beat their wings 200 times per second !

6. Each bee has 170 odorant receptors , which means they have one serious sense of smell! They use this to communicate within the hive and to recognise different types of flowers when looking for food.

Did you know that we have a FREE downloadable ‘Buzz about bees’ primary resource , all about these awesome insects? Great for teachers, homeschoolers and parents alike!

7. The average worker bee lives for just five to six weeks. During this time, she’ll produce around a twelfth of a teaspoon of honey.

8. The queen can live up to five years. She is busiest in the summer months, when she can lay up to 2,500 eggs a day!

Facts about honey bees

9. Honey bees are also brilliant boogiers! To share information about the best food sources, they perform their ‘ waggle dance ’. When the worker returns to the hive, it moves in a figure-of-eight and waggles its body to indicate the direction of the food source. Cool, huh?

10. Sadly, over the past 15 years, colonies of bees have been disappearing, and the reason remains unknown. Referred to as ‘colony collapse disorder’, billions of honey bees across the world are leaving their hives, never to return. In some regions, up to 90% of bees have disappeared!

We can all do our bit to support these brilliant bugs, gang! Why not  plant flowers rich in nectar, such as lavender and bluebells , which will help bees find the food they need? And when your family are buying honey, try to choose varieties that are locally made , to support our honey bees and their beekeepers!

HOW TO TEACH ABOUT HONEY BEES

Educational Beekeeping Poster Set

Use Visual Aids

Having something visual helps to engage your audience and gives them a better understanding of your subject matter. Photographs are by far the best visual tool for teaching. I used my photos to create a  honey bee educational poster set    that   I use constantly in my classes and talks. It’s fun to see the audience react with amazement to the macro images of tiny bee eggs and light up with glee when I show them the photo of festooning bees hanging in a cooperative chain. I use photos to share the wonder I feel on an almost daily basis working with bees. (Click here to read more about my poster set).

Not only do visuals keep your audience interested and learning, they can be used to structure your presentation! My poster set, for example, has a list of talking points and fun facts on the back. The set is numbered in the order that I normally present on the subject matter. When I am presenting and I am ready to move on to the next point, I pull up  the next image and it reminds me of what I want to say. If I need help, I can glance at the back while I am speaking. I also like to use power point style presentations in this way, but be careful not to put too much text into digital presentations or you might put your audience to sleep. They don’t need to read what you are saying, they would rather see a photo of what you are talking about.

Many beekeepers like to bring hive equipment with them when they present. This is a great visual aid and in some ways it can be more engaging because your audience can touch it. I especially love to bring some frames of empty comb for people to see in person. An even better idea is to bring live bees in an observation hive. I use  this  simple transportable single frame observation hive for my presentations.

Know Your Audience

Are you speaking to mostly new beekeepers, children, the non-beekeeping public? Get a sense of your audience! Ideally, you will know some of this information ahead of time. If you’ve been asked to speak at a church or community group it’s fair to assume this will mostly be the non-beekeeping public. If you are presenting to your local beekeeping club, you will likely have a mix of experienced and beginner beekeepers. If you are not sure who your audience is made up of, a good way to do find out is to ask them questions and get a show of hands. I like to do this before I even begin. I’ll say, “How many of you have bees?” or “Who’s interested in starting beekeeping?” Use this information to help shape your presentation. When speaking to new beekeepers, don’t forget to explain basic concepts before delving into more complex issues. When speaking to the public try to keep things light and interesting. Non-beekeepers love interesting factoids about bees.

Relate To Your Audience

Once you have an idea of who you are talking to, you should try to relate to them. New beekeepers love hearing about the mistakes experienced beekeepers made when they were starting out. It reassures them that their mistakes are not unique and hopefully helps them avoid the mistakes you made. Experienced beekeepers are always interested in your system for managing hives: what you do to prepare for spring, how you deal with varroa mites, what kind of equipment you use and why. Every beekeeper develops a way of doing things and it’s fun to hear what others are doing. You can liven up this topic by inserting some entertaining stories about your beekeeping experiences, too. General audiences want to know why you started keeping bees, what your day to day work is like and how they can help. Tell them to plant flowers or put out a water source for bees. Make them feel like they can be apart of this world even if they don’t want to keep bees.

Make An Outline

Structure is important. Draw up an outline of what you’d like to speak about and bring it along so you don’t get too off topic. I’ve seen too many great beekeepers get up to present and put everyone to sleep with long, overly complicated meandering talks. Beekeeping is a very complex subject and it’s easy to drone on too long about one thing or another. Try to be concise and insightful. Write down some points or facts to help guide yourself as you speak. It’s also a good idea to keep an eye on your audience, if they aren’t smiling and nodding every once in awhile, you need to spice up your subject matter. You might try asking them a question or telling a short, funny story.

I teach a lot of kid’s classes and the more I teach, the more I realize adults and children are not so different. Everything I have stated above definitely applies. Having visual and tactile aids are a must! Bring  posters  or make a short photo slide show you can share. Try bringing comb for them to to touch, live bees in an observation hive or drones they can pet. Walk into the classroom in your bee suit and let them squeeze the bellows of your smoker. Kids especially respond to presenters who engage with them. Ask them questions, “Who likes honey?” or  quiz them on fun bee facts, “How many eggs do you think a queen bee can lay in a day?”  When it comes to structuring your talk, try to be flexible with the information you plan to give them so that you can elaborate on things they seem to find interesting or shorten up your points when they are losing interest.

One trick that I use for children is to include games and short activities. This breaks up the information they are trying to absorb, but it also helps them remember what they learn. I ask the kids make a buzzing noise while holding their mouths to their arms so they can feel the vibrations bees make to communicate with each other. I have them pollinate imaginary flowers with glitter. I challenge them to find the queen in one of my poster images, a game I call “Queenspotting”. A game which is also extremely popular with adults, with whom I play regularly on my  Instagram account . If I notice attention is waning I will skim over some of the subjects so that we might do another activity. This wakes the kids up and gets them interested again. I always end my class presentations with a longer game that teaches kids about how the beehive operates on the whole, called  The Story of Bees . I sometimes use this to motivate kids to listen, telling them about the fun game we will soon play and warning them that they won’t understand it if they are not paying attention now.

Are there posters for bees diseases? How can I obtain them?

' src=

Hi Rita, no, I did not include any photos of bee diseases in the set. I tried to give them a more general focus so they could be used to teach kids and the public about the importance. I still think they would work for a beginning beekeeping class, but they do lack some of the more beekeeping specific photos. […] HOW TO TEACH ABOUT HONEY BEES Keeping Backyard Bees […]

As a retired teacher-trainer, I can endorse every technique and tip in this article. If you are ever asked to present about bees (or anything, really), this is a good guide for how to adjust your presentation to the audience (HUGELY important: you are not teaching a subject; you are not talking to please yourself, you are teaching PEOPLE – start where they are or you lose them immediately), as well as how to keep an audience engaged and focused. But do read it carefully and give serious thought to whether or not your presentation is putting these tips into practice.

I would add one thing: people love a take-away. The fun facts about bees that they can tell their friends are great; it keeps the talk alive in their minds and memories and reinforces your teaching if they go away and tell other people what they learned. But if you are hoping to inspire them to action (keeping bees, creating a more bee-friendly environment), give them something concrete and free to take home with them. For example, a list of 5 Ways You Can Bring Bees to Your Garden or 10 Things to Consider Before You Commit to Bee-keeping. Print them on colored paper (harder to lose in the mass of paper we deal with every day), and give them away at the end of your talk.

If you are talking to a school group, put together a reference kit for teachers to help them create lessons using information about bees. This can be as simple as a sheet with links to lessons people have already created and posted online or lists of books about bees and bee-keeping that they can order for the school library. If you’re really diligent, you could visit the local public library nearest the school and get a list of bee-related books there, then pass it on to the teacher so she can consider assigning some of the books for book reports. Another possibility is giving children small packets of seeds for a flower that attracts bees, and encouraging them to plant them in their own yard – some seed packets have many seeds for a small amount of money. If you do a bit of the preliminary work for them, people are more likely to build on your presentation themselves, instead of just thanking you and moving on.

When you give people something to take away and use, they feel like they ‘really’ got their money/time’s worth out of your presentation, and they are much more likely to revisit your information later, act on it, or spread it to a larger audience.

Thank you for this well thought out comment and additional advice.

Good information. Thank you! I bring a frame of capped honey and small plastic tasting spoons for the kids/adults to scoop out a spoonful of honey and wax capping to eat. They love it. Each spoon is only used once and discarded in a bowl of water and taken home to cleanup and recycle. Ken Green Bay
