Republic Day is a Significant Moment in India's History

26 th January is celebrated as Republic Day in our country. On this day in 1950, the constitution of our country was formally adopted and India became a fully sovereign state. Our constitution is the result of the hard work and struggle of the esteemed members of the Constituent Assembly under the Presidency of Dr. Rajendra Prasad. Dr. Ambedkar was the Father of our Constitution. After deeply studying the various constitutions of other countries, our founding fathers framed our Constitution and it is the lengthiest constitution in the world. It reflects upon the dedication and foresight of these great men. That is how the Constitution came into being. It took two years, eleven months, and eighteen days to complete the Constitution. Significance of 26 th January

It was also decided that the 26 th of January should be observed all over India as Purna Swaraj Day. The complete Independence Day was for the first time celebrated on January 26 th, 1930. It continued to be so observed until 1947. On achieving Independence, August 15 became our Independence Day.

January 26 th , however, marked a great event in India’s struggle for freedom. It was, therefore, in the favour of all that January 26 should be selected as the Date of Commencement of the new Constitution.

Therefore, this day is celebrated as a day of national significance with great joy and pride.

In 1934, MN Roy, a nationalist leader, was the first person who gave the idea of an Indian Constituent Assembly, which can help in framing the Consitution of India according to the needs of its people. After independence, in 1947, the first administrative task was to establish a self-made official Indian constitution. After the formation of the Constituent Assembly under the great Presidency of Dr Rajendra Prasad, our Constitution was framed.

The Indian constitution was structured after in-depth study and analysis of various other foreign constitutions and is popular as the lengthiest constitution in the World. It took a total of two years, eleven months, and eighteen days to complete the Constitution which came into force on 26th January 1950 and is celebrated as Republic Day today.

Republic Day in India is of great importance in history as it tells us all about the struggle of every freedom fighter. On the 26th of January in 1950, India was declared a Sovereign, Secular, Socialist, and Democratic Republic which means the people of India had the power to choose the government of the country. It is celebrated by organizing a major event with a special parade at Rajpath, New Delhi in the presence of the President of India by unfurling the National Flag and singing the National Anthem.

Republic Day in India commemorates the day on which the constitution of India came into effect. The day was the 26th of January, 1947, when the constitution of India replaced the Government of India Act (1935), and India officially became a Republic. Since that day, every year 26th of January is celebrated as Republic Day, throughout the country.

The 26th of January, 1950 was also the day when Dr Rajendera Prasad began his term as the first President of India, he served as the President of India till 1962. What was till then the Constituent Assembly of India became the Parliament of India under the new constitution.

Republic Day is celebrated with great pomp and pageantry in India’s capital New Delhi at the historic Rajpath. The Republic Day Parade in New Delhi is a colourful highlight of the celebrations that happen in every state, district, city, and village of India. The Republic Day Parade in New Delhi starts from Rashtrapati Bhavan at Raisina Hill and winds past India Gate. The parade is done before the President of India and the Chief Guest, as well as other dignitaries including the Prime Minister and other Cabinet Ministers.

The Republic Day parade showcases the might of the three wings of the Indian Armed Forces and its achievements. The culture and heritage of India and its unity in diversity are also showcased in this glittering parade.

The Indian national flag is hoisted and the National Anthem is played, the President of India inspects a Guard of Honour. As part of the Republic Day celebrations, many national and state awards are conferred. The civilian awards like Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhushan, etc., are distributed by the President of India on the eve of Republic Day. The beating retreat ceremony held on the 29th of January signals the conclusion of the official Republic Day celebrations of the country.

26th January 1950 is a red-letter day in Indian history. On this day, India became the Sovereign Democratic Republic. It was the day when India attained full independence, even though India became independent on 15 August 1947, it became utterly separate on 26 January 1950. Since then, 26th January is celebrated as Republic Day every year all over India. There is another reason for the Importance of the 26th January, the “India Government Act” was withdrawn and the newly constituted Constitution of India was implemented on this day. The constitution was ready on 26th November 1949, but its promulgation was deferred to coincide with 26th January 1950. On 26th January 1930, the All India Congress Committee at its Lahore Session held under the presidentship of Lt. Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru pledged that India’s aim was “Purna Swaraj” which is complete independence from British rule. Republic Day reminds us of the sacrifices made by many brave-hearted Indians to realize their pledge of complete independence from British rule. This day is celebrated throughout the country with great enthusiasm.

The main reason for celebrating Republic Day is that on this day the constitution of our country came into effect. However, there is another history of the great day, which is quite impressive. It started in December 1929 under the presidency of Pandit Nehru at the Indian National Congress convention held in Lahore. In this, the congress announced that if India were not given Domination still until January 26, 1930, India would declare itself completely Independent, but when this day came. The British government did not respond to this issue. Then, Congress started its active movement from that day to achieve complete freedom. This is the reason that when our country was liberated, on January 26, that day the constitution of India was established.

It is one of three National Festivals, the other two are ‘Gandhi Jayanti’ and ‘Independence Day.’ Being our national festival, every school, college, office, shop, factory, and other business establishment remains closed on this day due to the celebration of Republic Day. It is treated as a National Holiday. Although Republic Day celebrations are held across the country, the major festivals are visible at Rajpath in New Delhi, with the President, the Prime Minister, and other ministers in attendance. The Republic Day march in Delhi is the most significant and imperative of the processions denoting the Republic Day festivities in India. Indian Republic Days’ fascination keeps going for three days. The motorcade exhibits India’s protection ability and social and social legacy. Preceding the beginning of the Parade, the Prime Minister lays a botanical wreath at the Amar Jawan Jyoti, a remembrance of the fallen fighter at the India Gate towards one side of Rajpath, which is trailed by two minutes of silence in the memory of the fallen warriors. The sacrifice of martyrs who lived for their country is remembered on this day. From that point, the Prime Minister arrives at the central dais at Rajpath to join different dignitaries. Subsequently, the president, along with the chief guests, duly escorted by the President’s bodyguard on horseback, arrives to join others at Rajpath. The National Flag is unfurled by the president, after which the National Anthem is played along with a 21-gun salute. Next, essential honours like the Ashok Chakra and Kirti Chakra are given away by the President before the regiments of Armed Forces begin their walk past. The President presents awards of bravery to the members of the armed forces for their extraordinary mettle in the field and the civilians, who have farmed themselves by their distinctive demonstrations of courage in various circumstances. Youngsters who get the National Bravery Award are observed riding on vividly or specially designed elephants or vehicles.

For the event, the best NCC cadets are chosen from all over the country along with school students from different schools in the capital. Each Presentation shows the variety and wealth of the way of life in India. Around 1200 schoolchildren present dances and other cultural activities as a feature of the parade. Next comes the Motorcade which shows bike units of the Armed Forces and civil security services along with a flypast by the Indian Air Force planes and helicopters carrying the national banner and the banners of the armed forces.

All the states of India additionally show specific Jhanki identities with their way of life, customs, and advancement after freedom, demonstrating the presence of ‘Solidarity in Diversity in India.’ Cultural moves are displayed by individuals along with singing and dancing. Towards the end of the occasion, a tri-shading (saffron, white, and green) bloomers in the sky from planes, creating the image of the National Flag.

Republic Day is one of the three national festivals of our country, and it is the day that reminds us of the importance of our freedom. It is a Gazetted Public Holiday in India, and people all over India celebrate Republic Day with a great spirit of patriotism and joy.

In India, Republic Day is celebrated every year on January 26 to commemorate the day our Constitution took effect. When India gained independence in 1947, it did not have a permanent written constitution, and its laws were based on an updated version of the British-established Government of India Act 1935. The Drafting Committee for an Indian Constitution was formed by Dr B.R. Ambedkar after a fortnight on August 29, 1947. A celebration of Indian Independence Day is observed on the 26th of January in remembrance of the historic Declaration of Indian Independence (Purna Swaraj) made by the Indian National Congress in 1929.

The 4-day ceremony begins on the morning of 26 th  January with a wreath-laying at India Gate by the Prime Minister of India in honour of those who sacrificed their lives protecting the nation. The Republic Day Celebrations are concluded at Vijay Chowk on 29 th  January with a beating retreat led by the President of India. Ceremonially, the chief guest (the President) is escorted on horseback by a cavalry unit, which then performs the National Salute, followed by the National Anthem (Jan-Gan-Man).

The first Republic Day parade took place at Rajpath in 1950. It has been a tradition to invite the chief guest since the first Republic Day celebrations. It was requested that President Sukarno speak about Indonesia’s struggle for independence from Dutch rule.

On the first day of Republic Day festivities, the National Flag is unfurled at 8 a.m. The National Flag was designed by freedom fighter Pingali Venkayya, who hailed from Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh. Having undergone numerous revisions, the current state of the national flag was adopted on 22nd July 1947.

Rashtrapati Bhavan is the starting point and India Gate is the ending point. Vijay Chowk is at the beginning of the route, which begins at Amar Jawan Jyoti, continues along Rajpath, passes India Gate, and ends at India Gate.

  • Formation of the Constituent Assembly: With the end of British rule in sight, the need for a governing framework for independent India became imperative. The Constituent Assembly was formed on December 9, 1946, to draft a constitution that would serve as the supreme law of the land. The assembly comprised representatives from different regions, communities, and walks of life, reflecting the diverse fabric of the country.
  • Adoption of the Constitution: The Constituent Assembly dedicated years to the meticulous crafting of the Constitution, taking inspiration from various constitutional models and principles. After rigorous debates, discussions, and revisions, they adopted the final draft on January 26, 1950. On this day in 1929, the Indian National Congress held its Lahore Session, demanding total independence.

  • Guardian of the Constitution: The judiciary, with the Supreme Court at its apex, acts as the guardian of the Constitution. It interprets the Constitution, resolves disputes, and ensures that laws align with constitutional principles.
  • Judicial Review: Courts can investigate the legality of laws and government activities according to the power of judicial review. This checks for potential violations of fundamental rights.
  • Impartiality and Independence: Judicial independence is crucial to maintaining the integrity of the legal system. Judges uphold the law without fear or favor, ensuring a fair and impartial dispensation of justice.

Election Commission:

  • Conducting Free and Fair Elections: The responsibility for arranging and supervising free, fair, and transparent elections rests with the Election Commission of India on multiple levels.
  • Electoral Reforms: The Election Commission works towards implementing electoral reforms to enhance the democratic process, improve voter participation, and address malpractices.
  • Ensuring Electoral Integrity: Maintaining the integrity of the electoral process mainly depends on the Election Commission’s enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct.

Democratic Values

Upholding these values is essential for the flourishing of democracy and realizing a society that respects the dignity and agency of every citizen.

  • Participation and Representation: Democratic values emphasize active citizen participation in decision-making. Regular, free, and fair elections allow citizens to choose their representatives, ensuring that the government is accountable to the people.
  • Pluralism and Tolerance: Democracy values diversity of opinions, beliefs, and backgrounds. Pluralism and tolerance promote a society where individuals with different perspectives can coexist, fostering a culture of mutual respect and understanding.
  • Accountability and Transparency: Democratic governance requires transparency in decision-making and accountability of public officials. Regular audits, disclosure of information, and mechanisms for holding leaders accountable are crucial aspects of maintaining democratic values.
  • Human Rights Protection: Democratic societies prioritize protecting human rights as a fundamental obligation. Safeguarding civil liberties, such as the right to life, liberty, and security, ensures the dignity and well-being of every individual.
  • Majority Rule with Minority Rights: While a fundamental democratic principle is majority rule, protecting minority rights tempers it. Democratic values strive to prevent the tyranny of the majority and ensure that minority groups are not marginalized or excluded.

Constant vigilance and investment in cybersecurity are necessary to protect critical infrastructure, personal data, and national security from cyber threats.
  • Healthcare Infrastructure and Public Health: The COVID-19 epidemic has highlighted the importance of a robust healthcare system. Challenges in healthcare delivery, accessibility, and disparities in healthcare services need urgent attention. Strengthening the healthcare system is crucial for addressing pandemics and ensuring the population’s well-being.
