HOW TO WRITE A 60TH BIRTHDAY SPEECH

• Gather your content – brainstorm your favourite moments and best stories
• Find a theme – identify a common thread that connects your content
• Prove, don’t tell – it’s not enough to say they’re a great person – how is this true?
• Add humour – don’t lift yours off the internet
• Conclude with the touching bit – think sentimental, not saccharine
• Keep it succinct – stick to 8 minutes max

Okay so, much like the last six decades, let’s take it stage by stage…

1 – GATHER YOUR CONTENT

The key to giving an authentic, heartfelt speech is to keep it personal. Your audience wants to recognise the person you’re talking about, not listen to you reel off platitudes about some generic 60-year-old.

It’s likely you’ve known this person a long time, so you should have plenty of material in your arsenal. Even so, it’s worth doing a bit of extra digging.

Dust off old photo albums and enjoy an afternoon reminiscing. Get in touch with friends and family to ask them about their fondest memories of the person you’re writing about.

2 – FIND A THEME 

Ok, you’ve got your stash of stories, now what are you going to do with them?

Well, you pick the best and bin the rest.

Remember, you don’t need to list everything you’ve ever done. This is not an obituary.

You’re looking for three things:

• The funniest, most entertaining stories
• Stories that make a point (either funny or poignant)
• And a thread that connects them all

Your speech should sound like one flowing narrative rather than simply a collection of anecdotes and thoughts, so that final point is important. 

EXAMPLES OF THEMES 

• Pinpoint the standout characteristics and personality traits of the birthday boy/girl; the ones that everyone in the room will recognise as being truly ‘them’. It could be that they always, somehow, find themselves in bonkers situations. If so, find examples of that happening through the years and use these stories as the foundation for your speech.
• ‘Older, not wiser’ – a classic theme for any ‘big’ birthday speech. Recount the funny tales through the ages. 
• Alternatively, you could talk about the various things you’ve learned from your loved one over your years together – whether it’s how to make a killer risotto or why it’s important to write thank you letters. 

3 – PROVE, DON’T TELL 

Adjectives are easy. And just a bit boring. 99% of people could be described as ‘fun-loving’ and ‘caring’. 

Instead of the obvious, highlight what makes your loved one unique . And then prove their qualities in action to make your description come to life and sound more than just a platitude. 

Are they incredibly fun to be around? Explain why even a trip to Lidl with them turns into an adventure. 

Or if they are very kind-hearted, tell everyone about the time they picked you up at 2am from the train station (when no taxi driver would!) and didn’t even mention it in the morning. 

4 – THE IMPORTANCE OF HUMOUR 

This is a party, not an episode of This Is Your Life. Keep it as light and as entertaining as possible.

Not everyone is a natural crowd pleaser and speaking in public makes most of us nervous. But the beauty of a celebratory speech is that everyone is there to have fun so there’s goodwill from the off.

Don’t rely on dodgy jokes off the internet. Chances are at a 60 th , there are people in the crowd who’ll recognise them as recycled!

In fact, you don’t have to come up with ‘jokes’ at all per se. Just be as real as possible about the star of your story, while maybe exaggerating some of their more interesting quirks.

Look for inconsistencies in their character. Are they quite serious by nature but they’re happy to be given a glamorous ‘makeover’ when the grandchildren come to visit?

Ask yourself what makes them different and think back to seminal moments or eras of their lives. Consider their fashion choices over the decades – were they a mod or rocker? Did they pull off a mullet in the 80s and are now bemused at today’s generation acting like they invented it?

Once you start thinking about it, you’ll realise just how much there is to play with. 

5 – The Touching Tribute… 

A warmed-up audience will respond well to some well-timed sentiment towards the end of your speech. Most of us accept that some affectionate teasing is the best way to pay tribute to someone you love, but it’s also nice to show your softer side with some genuine praise.

By now, the crowd will be running high on nostalgia, so trade on those good feelings and speak honestly about what you truly admire and appreciate about your person. 

Make sure your speech sums up a lifetime of love and creates one of life’s special moments. 

6 – Keep It Snappy 

Of course, you can have too much of a good thing. 

Any celebration speech should be delivered well within ten minutes, even allowing for laughter and any good-natured heckles!

I can’t believe my 30’s have left me… I think it’s about time I started acting more serious and more so, my age… Well, maybe after tonight…

I now realise it was just an old person who was trying to figure out where the hell all the time went! Ha-Ha! I guess time flies when you’re having fun. Well I Know it’s definitely true for me. Secondly I have been blessed with two beautiful boys who are an absolute pain in my ass, Ha-Ha! Though I do love so dearly! Apart from my gorgeous wife, I never thought I would love these boys so much, as much as I do. It must be because they remind me so much of me when I was growing up… Ha-Ha!

And thirdly… To all of you beautiful people standing here before me today. How can I not enjoy having each and every one of you in my life. I mean how lucky can a man get to have such funny, supportive and caring friends. Blessed is the word I use to describe having all of you be apart of my journey through life. Thank you all for being here today. Its is honestly an honour to celebrate this day with all of you here tonight.

Anyway, enough with all this sentimental crap, let’s pump the music back up, all grab a drink and at least let me celebrate being 39 one more time! Ha-Ha! Thank you!

Wow, how time flies! It’s only yesterday I can remember starting my first job at McDonalds where I met my best friend. And now I have a glass of champagne in my hand, celebrating my 50th birthday in front of all of you amazing people.

To not only organise all of this, but also keep it a secret from me which I am blown away how much effort she put in. The amount of detail she has put into this venue is incredible. Such an amazing woman, and I mean look at her, even after all these years, she is still a stunner!

To my two boys, I am proud of both of you and must say you are both still a pain in my ass. Must be because you remind me of when I was a kid growing up. Ha-Ha, they do say that karma eventually comes around. I can now understand what I put my parents through when I was growing up! But jokes aside they a great boys and couldn’t wish for any better.

Obviously I need to give a shout out to mum and dad for putting up with me over my younger years. Considering i’m sure many of you agree, I was no angel growing up. I like to think I turned out alright. Ha-Ha! Though I do have to say they were always there for support and was truly blessed to have incredible parents. I love you both.

To all my close family and friends here tonight. Thank you all for coming and most importantly, thank you for being apart of my life. All of you, in one way or another have been apart of my incredible journey of being 50 years on this earth and I wouldn’t want it any way.

For those of you whose memories are fading or may have had a little too much to drink tonight, we are here to celebrate the birthday of my dad. Fifty years ago today, the world was given a great gift. A gift by the name of (Insert name). The first of three children, my father was and still is, a very funny and generous man. Throughout the years, he has told many of us his overly simplistic, corny jokes which keeps us all laughing to this day. Just earlier he told me a joke and had me giggling like a little girl again. Starting a memorable occasion speech is especially easy if you are the first (or only) speaker. Then, a simple “Good morning” or “Good evening” is an appropriate way to greet the guests. Once you give that traditional greeting, jump into what you want to say.

What Do You Say In A Birthday Speech If You Are A Parent?

If you are the parent, are you hosting the event for your son or daughter? There are certain milestone birthdays that a parent might still be likely to host, such as the 16th or 18th birthday.

A parent giving a birthday speech might thank all of the wonderful people for coming to celebrate with their son or daughter on their birthday. How you word the rest of the speech depends on how close your relationship is with your child and your child’s gender and age.

When celebrating a coworker’s birthday, ask yourself about your relationship before making a speech and offering a toast. It might be appropriate for you to talk about how much positive energy they add to the workplace. Another tactic could be to discuss how they are such a team player.

Never bring up anything negative at a person’s birthday party. If you find them annoying or lazy as a coworker, say nothing.

What Should I Say In My Friend’s Birthday Speech?

If it is your best friend’s birthday, there are many angles to approach for giving a great birthday speech. First, you might share some  fun stories.  This is especially great if you have been friends for a long time and have some  great memories  to talk about. • 16th Birthday:  The 16th birthday , called a sweet sixteen for girls, should include something about the guest of honor practically being an adult.
• 18th Birthday:  As the official entry into adulthood in many countries, the 18th birthday is a big one. Make sure to recognize this in any birthday speech.
• 21st Birthday:  Even though people can legally drink alcohol at much younger ages in other countries, in the United States, this is the magic number for being able to drink. For this reason, this birthday is often accompanied by a party. A parent often will recognize that fact in a speech or toast.
• 30th Birthday:  Also called the “dirty thirty,” this is a fun milestone birthday to celebrate what many see as the end of their youth. Speeches and toasts for this birthday typically include birthday quotes about getting older and recognition of the next stage of life. You certainly can use some funny one-liner jokes, quotes, or tidbits.
• 40th Birthday:  Middle age is between 40 and 50, so this birthday sometimes takes work for people, especially women. It is always appropriate to wish the birthday person long life and health. If you know the person well enough to be sure they will handle gentle ribbing well, you could make some “getting old” jokes in your speech.

Using both will give you a well-rounded speech that will appeal to everyone. Plus, you'll get to know some of the guests better, so you'll be more at ease speaking in front of them.

Be Sensitive

Some people treat a birthday speech as an opportunity to roast the guest of honor. While a little bit of joking around is acceptable - and can be fun - don't try to embarrass the individual.

Birthday speeches.

They're fun to listen to and fantastic to be on the receiving end of.  However writing one for somebody you love can be a completely different story. And I'm picking that's why you here.

I understand the issues involved in preparing a speech, especially one for someone close to you! They can be daunting.

What's the common problem with writing a birthday speech?

The problem is not because you don't want to publicly acknowledge the person whose birthday it is. You do.

It's generally more a case of agony caused by indecision through not knowing where to start.

Perhaps you've read my birthday speech tips page and are caught up wondering what to put in, what to leave out, how long will the speech take to say when it's finished, and what joke or special quotation to use, if any?

Now I know this struggle, because I've been there, done that and chewed the tops of pencils down too. A blank page has a tyranny all of its own! 

A birthday speech example

So to help preserve your pencil collection and your sanity here's an example speech which I hope lessens at least some of the anxiety you may feel about writing.

Speech context

Before you rush on to read it, you need context. That is you need to know who this speech is for, who wrote it, why the birthday is significant and the setting it is delivered in. This will help you make sense of it, giving you a complete picture.

Enter Alan West

Although I wrote this speech especially for you, we're pretending it was written for the 50th birthday of a man called Alan West. We're also pretending it was delivered at a party for his friends and family by his close friend of 30 years, Mark.

As you read it, imagine you are hearing it spoken aloud.

You'll see he's been "roasted" - teased, or made fun of, in a kindly way. 

The speech has a speaking time of approximately 5-6 minutes, depending on how fast, or slowly, you speak. That length is good for this type of occasion. 

 50th birthday speech for Alan West

"Good evening all. It's great to have you here.  Most of you know my feeling on birthdays.

Generally I say, what's the big deal?

By the  time you've had over thirty, there should be a cease and desist order against them.

They're not unusual. Everybody has them and at the same rate as everybody else - one a  year. They happen whether you want them to or not.

Believe me, I know. I've had quite a few  and looking around this room I can see it's the same for others as well.

So why are we here?

It's not to celebrate the inevitable passage of time but something much more. Everyone has  birthdays but not everyone is my friend, Alan West.

Alan, you are unique. And today I'm gladly putting aside my grumbles about birthday  speeches, balloons, presents and silly hats, to honor you.

You've reached the 50 milestone. 50 birthdays, that's a whole lot of living. Enough  to establish the character of a man, to know who he is. And I've known you through about 30  of them.

So what I want to know is, when are you going to give up the idea that you're a surfer? 

We all know your geriatric surfboard has gone to the beach with you every summer for at least the  last 15 years and never once got wet. Millie says you're waiting for the big one. I say it  happened in 1988 and you were too busy zinc coating your nose to notice.

Rumor has it that  your surfboard has been bolted to the top of whatever wagon you've had is ever since.

Likewise his growing collection of fancy running shoes. He says he can't seem to get a good  fit these days. I say his days of being good and fit have long since gone, up and over the  hill.

And then there's the annual season tickets to 10 nights of film festival screenings.

They  seem like a good idea. They were a good idea in the days when the ratio of  surplus energy to the number of hours in a day was higher.

Doesn't he know, he's at that age when his back is expected to go out more frequently  than himself?

But seriously folks, aside from his lamentable quirks of character Alan is a friend - a real  one. He's there when you need him - offering practical advice on just about everything, from  how to unblock the drains to how to meet personal tragedy with courage.

And Alan's not a  mere theorist who has read the books. He walks his talk and walks it tall.

I know he's shy about having his good deeds displayed in public.

A less kind person than myself  might say that's because if everybody knew just how helpful he could be, he'd be called upon  all the time. And that would mean no time for polishing the surfboard or adding another pair  of shoes to the collection. But I know better. He's modest.

However on this occasion I'm  going to ignore his finer feelings. 

I thought it would be great to publicly acknowledge all the personal and lovable qualities we admire about Alan. So I asked around.

I had a couple of contributions. One from Sam who mentioned his foot size was  similar to yours and that his runners were down at heel.

The other was from my son who said  he'd be willing to take the film passes off his hands.

Neither was the type of thing I had in mind. So I was forced to think for myself.

Alan, you're an important touchstone in my life.

For 30 years we've stood by each other through the good as well as difficult, challenging times.

I value your opinion (when it's not on the dubious merit of old surfboards). I value the way we can agree to disagree and still count each other as friends. I admire your humor and humility. Then there's your persistence which some might call stubbornness.

I could go on but because I want to preserve what's left of our friendship and  myself, I won't. They say, looks can't kill however the one you're giving me now seems  murderous.

So before I'm forcibly shut-up, I'll do it myself.

In conclusion, please raise your glasses to Alan, to friendship and to birthdays. May you  have many more."

Leigh was just turning 60 and he had been playing golf all his life.

He comes home one day and said to his wife, "That's it, I will have to give up golf, my eyesight is that bad I can't see where the ball is going anymore."

His wife in trying to cheer him up replied, "I am sure you can give it one more go. Take my older brother with you."

"What good is that," replied Leigh. "He's nearly 90."

When quirky rock star Maynard James Keenan turned 50 in 2014, the singer threw a party at the Greek Theatre over two nights that featured two of his three different bands – A Perfect Circle and Puscifer – alongside the band Failure.

Ten years later, Keenan returns with Sessanta, a 60th birthday party at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on Saturday, April 20.

A Perfect Circle and Puscifer are back – Keenan’s third and biggest band Tool recently finished its own tour – and they’re bringing old friends Primus along. And this time, it’s going on the road, too.

Oddball rockers Primus will join singer Maynard James Keenan on the Sessanta Tour. The word, Spanish for 60, refers to the fact that the tour is a celebration of Keenan’s 60th birthday on April 17, 2004. The Sessanta Tour kicked off April 2 with the first of two shows in Boston. After winding its way across the country, it reaches San Diego on Thursday, April 18, swings by the Hollywood Bowl on April 20, and then heads north to the Greek Theatre in Berkeley on Sunday, April 21.

As with the the Cinquanta shows in Los Angeles a decade ago, the Sessanta shows will mix and match bands and performers throughout the night. One band might kick off the show and be joined by members of another after a song or two. Each band will get its own spotlight on stage, but players will come and go.

Or maybe just sit in lawn chairs drinking red wine as they did at the 2014 shows.

We caught up with Keenan by phone at his home in Arizona, where he was overseeing work on the wineries and restaurants he owns and operates there. In an interview edited for length and clarity, he talked about the plan for the Bowl show, how different songs find their way to his various bands, and – especially – why you should never be late to a Maynard James Keenan show.

Q: After Cinquanta at the Greek Theatre, was it always in your mind that you would do another one of these 10 years later?

A: Well, you know, as we were approaching it, I had considered doing something similar even not related to the birthday. But COVID and new albums and touring kind of threw a wrench in it. So it made sense to save it for the 60th.

Q: This time it’s bigger, too. More of a mini tour, I guess.

A: We’re gonna be hitting places all over the state. Wish we could get to more. Time doesn’t allow.

Q: Tell me a little how you’ve got it planned out this time.

A: It’s three bands and we’re gonna be all sharing the stage. So A Perfect Circle will do a few songs, and then Puscifer will do a few songs, and Primus will do a few songs. And just keep rotating like that. Some of us will guest appear on other bands’ songs.

We’ll probably have some special guests, especially at the Hollywood Bowl because, you know, it is L.A. and a lot of our friends live there. That’s pretty much the agenda. It’s just a rotation and shared guest spots. And we have a few new songs that we’re playing. So it’s also that.

Q: At the Greek, performers sat on stage and watched the others perform. Drank wine and then would come up and sing. Will this be like that was?

A: I wouldn’t want to spoil anything. We’ve figured it out logistically, so it’ll be kind of what it was before, but with a few twists.

Q: I’m curious how complicated, or uncomplicated, to manage all the comings and goings.

A: We try to make sure we plan enough to where if there’s any kind of improv or some kind of last-minute decision, as long as we have 95% of it mapped out for how it’s going to go, then part that last 5% can be the flexible part.

Q: What made Primus the right choice for a third group to have in these shows?

A: I think just the relationship I’ve developed with Les Claypool and Ler [Larry “Ler” LaLonde] over the years. And my old relationship, that’s already been established, with Tim [“Herb” Alexander]. Tim’s played on Puscifer songs, he’s played on Perfect Circle songs, so it just kind of made sense to have him, have them come out.

Q: So what is it like for you to move through the different songs you’ve created over the years with Tool, A Perfect Circle, and Puscifer?

A: Well, there’s a map associated with each song and you snap right into the map. It’s already been established. So that’s easy. Conversations are just like you talking to your old high school buddies, your work buddies or your family. You’re going to have different conversations with each one of them.

Q: How do you know if a song is for Tool, A Perfect Circle, or Puscifer?

A: Generally speaking, the music is written first and I’m reacting to the music. I’ve been writing a lot more. Early on. I wrote a lot with A Perfect Circle. And then recently I’ve been writing more with Puscifer. So by handing it off and just having Billy [Howerdel) create things for Perfect Circle and having Mat [Mitchell] present things for Puscifer, the seed starts with them, and then I’m reacting to what I’m hearing, as always.

Q: Do each of the three bands satisfy a different interest that you have in music?

A: I have no idea.

Q: Since A Perfect Circle  have not toured as recently as Puscifer or Tool, what will it be like to be back with Billy and the other folks who are going to be part of it this time?

A: Do you find that when you go home for, say, a family reunion or a holiday that you kind of seamlessly fall back into your old habits a little bit – and maybe your accent from wherever you’re from kind of comes back out?

Q: Yep, yep.

Q: Let me ask you about your wineries. I know it’s grown a lot in recent years. Tell me what it’s like over there now.

A:  We have about 110 acres under vine in Arizona. We have Caduceus Cellars up in Jerome, but I have several winery locations, because we have not just Caduceus but we have Merkin and we have Four Eight Wineworks and my Queen B sparkling wines.

So it’s quite the expanse. We have a trattoria up in Cottonwood with the winery right next to it surrounded by five acres of vines, and we just opened a fried chicken place because the mead we made was pretty delicious. I was trying to figure out how to present the mead in a way that made sense and had a fried chicken recipe, so we kind of melded the two and it’s going really well.

Q: For you, working in this non-musical wine world, what’s the satisfaction you get from it?

A: It’s puzzles. It’s all creative solutions to challenges and hurdles. It’s all puzzles.

Q: Will we see you in a decade for the Setenta Tour?

A:  Hopefully. The biggest thing you want to make sure you drive home in your article is to show up on time, because the show starts when the show starts. There is no opener. If you want to catch the first song, it’s not who you’d expect it to be. So show up on time, be in your seat ready to go, because it will not be a normal show.

Q: So you will start close to 7:30 p.m., the time on the ticket?

A:  I’m former military. We start on time.
