A Study of the Varying Perspectives of Marriage in Jane Eyre, Middlemarch, and Jude the Obscure Open Access
Covo, dana lauren (2013).
In my thesis I explore the different perspectives of marriage in Jane Eyre (1847), Middlemarch (1871-72), and Jude the Obscure (1895) . I chose these novels because I wanted to examine changing attitudes over the course of a time period; the three novels span the majority of the Victorian era. In addition, each novel has a leading female character with a strong and vibrant personality. The diverse personalities of the women highlight their different ideas, perspectives, and feelings in regard to marriage. For most of the Victorian era, marriage was considered very restrictive and limiting for women, especially in terms of their legal status. They had to give up all their property upon marriage and anything earned during the marriage also became their husband's. They could not sue or file for divorce. They were essentially an entity of their husbands. However, despite these limitations women still yearned to get married as unmarried women were considered spinsters and social outcasts. Marriage offered women the chance to be a wife and a mother. These were respected and important positions of the time and gave women the responsibilities that came with running a household and raising children. Despite the legal restrictions associated with marriage for women, Jane Eyre , Middlemarch and Jude the Obscure present marriage as an arrangement more than a legal union; the novels explore and bring to life the emotional, psychological, and physical parts of marriage that make it so sacred and coveted. Jane Eyre's, Dorothea Brooke's and Sue Bridehead's experiences with marriage both support and deny the idea of marriage as a means of defeat to the individuality and independence of a woman. However, while these women are able to make strides in terms of their independence, all of their actions are within the confines of a patriarchal society. These women ultimately rely on men to attain happiness, social status, and social acceptance.

UNDERSTANDING THE FOUNDATION AND PURPOSE OF MARRIAGE FROM A BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVE
2015, UNDERSTANDING THE FOUNDATION AND PURPOSE OF MARRIAGE FROM A BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVE
We are living in a time when the heavenly foundation of the institution of marriage is widely misunderstood. Western (European) culture, same as most other cultures all over the world, views marriage very differently than the Bible presents it. Today, marriage is usually presented as one among many lifestyle options, i.e. it can be found in the same box with the need for advanced education and career achievement. Alan J. Hawkins stated that a great number of scholars in social sciences and the law see marriage primarily as a personal lifestyle choice.1 Marriage is seen today as an institution where each partner has equal rights which are different than traditional marriages which were popular until several decades ago. From this quest for equality and freedom in marriage appeared numerous feminist and egalitarian movements which went to another (liberal) extreme from traditional marriages. Unfortunately in this quest for justice and liberty from marriage the way our Western culture has presented it over the years, these movements often have gone in completely different extreme by discarding marriage and presenting it in a new way, way which doesn’t lead to God but to satisfying personal needs. From the biblical perspective marriage is designed to be the majestic cover of the book whose primary subject is Jesus Christ. The content of every book needs to command more attention than its covers, so from this perspective understanding God’s design for marriage is much more important than our personal vision of marriage. The purpose of this research is to present the significance and value of marriage as a community not just of husband and wife, but also of God who is the Founder of this community. 1 Therefore, implies that marriage is not a unique and vital institution that is the foundation of individual, family, community, and societal well-being, but it is only one of a number of viable relationship forms that are capable of promoting personal well-being and societal support. (Alan J. Hawkins et. al. Revitalizing the Institution 1 The main notion which permeates this paper and comprehends all main problematic areas in marriage is commitment. Because several influential groups as are psychologists, feminists, and even some marriage counsellors, suggested that marriage is only a contract, an additional intention of this paper is to defend the biblical point of view by giving valid arguments on this topic. Through this research we will touch upon various problematic areas which affect marriage harmony. These areas are going to comprehend marriage conflict, communication, intimacy, mutual understanding, and accepting responsibility for causing marriage difficulties. These all will be comprehended through mutual understanding of the unity between husband and wife in the marital community. The first chapter will present marriage in the contemporary world by defining it and comparing traditional marriage with modern (contemporary) marriage. The second chapter will elaborate Paul’s verses on the issue of male headship and women submission. In the third chapter through biblical lenses major problematic areas will be perceived such as monogamy, polygamy, same – sex union, and divorce with the purpose to represent marriage as a covenant. Given that this research is written from a Christian perspective, it will be woven with the biblical principles for a happy, harmonious and religious2 marriage. The starting point of this research is the belief that the Bible is God’s Word which has power to change the life of everyone who is honest and willing to accept God as Creator and Father, and also the Founder of the marital community.

The last four decades witnessed a tremendous and wide-ranging change in family patterns in Western societies which also has rapidly impacted Indian society. Among these changes are phenomena such as growing rates of divorce, out-of-wedlock births and father absence due to globalization as well as same-sex marriages or civil unions and cohabitation of people without a marriage contract. The central theoretical argument of this seminar is that the biblical perspectives on marriage and family-life are normative for all people in all times in every culture. The biblical perspectives not only offer a clear indication of healthy marriage and family life, but also entail that Christian attitude in marriage and family life can be a remedy to the damage caused by the new patterns.

"Marriage and Family in the Biblical World" is an anthology comprising essays authored by six specialists, centrally aimed at undertaking a comparative and theological exploration across six distinct cultural contexts prevalent during biblical times. The primary objective is to offer an insightful examination into the dynamics of marriage and family within these historical settings. The collection presents an expansive panorama of source materials derived from antiquity, with a dedicated focus on the intricate nuances of marital and familial structures. These ancient cultures serve as the foundational underpinning upon which contemporary perceptions and practices regarding the family have evolved. The six cultural settings meticulously examined encompass the Ancient Near East, Old Testament Israel, Greece, Rome, Second Temple Judaism, and the New Testament. This paper systematically presents a comprehensive summary of the fundamental conclusions of each contributing author, delineating their key arguments, methodologies, and discoveries. Through this synthesis, it aspires to offer an inclusive comprehension of the diverse perspectives encapsulated within the book. Subsequently, the paper transitions into a critical evaluation of the essays, addressing both the strengths and limitations evident within the scholarly contributions.

As it begins to reflect on man, the Holy Scripture places him in the context of marriage. In both stories about the creation of the world in the early passages of the Bible-Genesis 1 (authored by the sacerdotal class) and Genesis 2 (authored by the non-sacerdotal class)-the creation of man is de facto a creation of the first marriage. In biblical, dogmatic, moral or pastoral theology, these normative texts are treated as a biblical norm of the institution of matrimonium. Meanwhile, "normality" was different, and it is only against its backdrop that the profound novum addressed in the above-mentioned works emerges. In the present article I will discuss the main - in my opinion - difficulties of marriages in the Bible.

This paper provides a foundational theology of marriage from a distinctly Messianic Jewish perspective. That is, it begins with Jesus' reference to marriage in Matthew 19 to develop an account of marriage based on Genesis 1 and 2 that draws heavily on traditional rabbinic material. The paper is deliberately foundational, that is, it does not seek to resolve all the questions surrounding marriage, but rather to provide a platform for discussing these questions.

Marriage is a covenant, a sacred bond between a man and a woman instituted by and publicly (before God) and normally consummated by sexual intercourse. God’s plan for marriage covenant is permanence, sacredness, intimacy, mutuality, and exclusiveness. That husband and wife (family) are the light of the covenant already established as Christ and the Church (cf. Mark 10:6-9). However, there are lots of challenges in the 21st century, such as the disconnection between love and procreation, the privatization of marriage and family, the increase in divorce, adultery, abortion, contraception, same-sex marriage, and many others. Therefore, the worth and call of marriage and the family is slowly being overlooked. The paper presents how the mystery of redemption could be read in the sweetness of marriage and the family, and how the experience of marriage and the family in the mystery of redemption should be understood and lived in the Church’s witness to the world at large. It affirms that, "Marriage and family are institutions that have been for centuries the image of unity despite differences in culture, religion and civilization, and to some extent, have reflected the belief that neither man nor woman is perfect or complete without the other." Therefore, the paper acknowledges that Christian marriage always exists within a culture and is influenced by it.
