The understanding of destination image is a key point for tourism enterprises, local authorities, and policy makers. This study explores the case of Capraia, a small island located in Tuscany, to analyze how tourists (tourism demand) and local operators (tourism supply) create and communicate the island’s online image. This research quantitatively examines online communication on the two sides of the tourism market to monitor the online destination image of the island of Capraia. To build on previous research in this area, this study adopts a web content mining approach to assess the characteristics of content published online. The main dimensions of destination image (as developed in the literature) are used as a basis to create a dictionary for automated content analysis. A total of 24 tourism promotion websites and 9,180 tourist Instagram posts were analyzed. Findings reveal discrepancies between the image proposed by local operators and that perceived by tourists. Local operator...

Image plays a meaningful role in boosting the competitive edge of a particular tourist destination. As digital media have been receiving considerable importance in supplying information and act as marketing means in tourism, this study aims to explore the image of a tourist destination depicted in the websites by national and local promotional organisations. In investigating the destination image topic, this research explores the image of Dunedin as projected by tourism websites of the official bodies in the promotion of this city. A content analysis technique has been adopted in the assessment of these travel promotional websites. Overall, a very positive image of the city has been projected by both national and local organisations. Findings of this paper revealed that the national tourism organisation highlighted the Scottish origin of Dunedin and labelled the city as the Edinburgh of New Zealand. The primary asset or the unique selling proposition of the city as projected by both...

Content or textual analysis is commonly used in humanities and social sciences to assess constructed identity, particularly in the field of psychology, political science, and management. It became a popular research technique in the 1960s (Glaser 1965 ) and can be quantitative, qualitative, or a mixture of the two. Questions such as who says what, to whom, why, how, and with what effect are examined when analyzing textual information collected from different sources. The approach is used to study recorded human communications, such as books, websites, and laws for the objective, systematic, and quantitative description of its manifest content (Babbie 2003 ). For example, communication and textual information can be examined in order to explore its authorship, authenticity, or meaning (Joubish and Khurram 2011 ), or volunteer tourism referential content analysis can be used by considering linguistic context to enable qualitative analysis of implicit text within dissimilated Web content...
