How to make a lap book - a free lapbook template.
Lap Books are everywhere! If you like hands-on projects, interactive notebooks, or creative ways to engage your students in learning, then you may want to give lapbooks a try. Today’s post is on how to make a lap book with just a few simple items! Plus, download a FREE Book Report Lapbook Template for teachers and homeschooling families for use with your students!
When I first heard of lapbooks and saw some samples that other teachers had made, I was afraid it would be too time-consuming and project-heavy without a focus on real learning. I was wrong . (Don’t tell my husband I said that…he may write it down for future reference!) 😉
Lap books do not have to be huge, multi-paged contraptions. They are actually quite simple to make. Here is how to create a basic lap book, using ONE file folder . 😀 I’m a simple gal at heart!
Materials needed:
- 1 file folder
- 1 sheet colored construction paper (or cardstock)
- colored pencils, crayons, extra paper
Place the file folder open flat on the table.
STEP 2:
Fold each side of the folder inward toward the center fold. Crease strongly on the 2 new folds. (It should look like a French Door.)
Cut a piece of heavy construction paper or card stock and glue it to the inside back wall of the lap book. This not only reinforces and strengthens the back wall, but it also adds some color to the project.
Add interactive notes, titles, research, and any desired features to your lap book.
That’s all there is to it! Simple, easy, and fun. There are so many different projects for which you can use lapbooks – book reports, famous person project, history report, all about me, math display, creative writing project, and so much more!

Have you ever thought about sitting down and creating lapbooks with your kids, but thought it would be too difficult? Nothing is further from the truth! Lapbooks are super easy to make work beautiful with unit studies and are a great way to record everything kids have learned about a subject. So today I’m sharing with you a quick guide to lapbooking. You’ll learn how to make a lapbook, and you’ll find over 90 free lapbook printables for you to use in your homeschool! Plus, download free lapbook templates for DIY lapbooking at the bottom of this post.
What is a Lapbook?
In order to make a lapbook, kids create small activity books, fold paper, and answer questions to create their books. Then all the activity books are gathered and glued onto manila folders which fit on a child’s lap. Hence the name lapbook.
They’re so easy that even non-crafty moms can make them. All you need are some manila folders, templates, colored pencils or crayons, scissors, and glue.
Lapbooks are Perfect for Visual Learners
Lapbooks are great if you have a visual learner. If your child enjoys creating things like my hands-on, artsy daughter – they will thrive with lapbooking. She loves working with her hands, drawing, cutting, gluing, crafting – all of it. And she really is a visual learner, so lapbooks are the perfect addition to her learning!
Lapbooks are a great way to help children visually see the layout of a book, learn more about an animal, country, and more.
If you have a visual learner like mine, I’m sure they will love putting together lapbooks. And the best part is you can literally make a lapbook for any subject, book, or topic. And all it really takes is some file folders, a printer, scissors, glue, and a pencil.
How to Make a Lapbook
All you need are some templates you can use to create your own, or even some you can type in for multiple kids (to save for the future). But if you’re new to lapbooking, like me, you can find a very helpful series here on Homeschool Share. We have gathered a huge list for you to get started.
All you need to do is download and print the templates and have a pile of manila folders for the children to use. Your children will need colored pencils or crayons, scissors, and glue. Add in a few books so the kids can do some research to answer the questions and you’re good to go.
Your kids will have fun making their lapbooks and showing the books off to grandparents.

18 Colorful and Free Lapbooks for History Unit Studies
July 15, 2022 | 2 Comments This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see my full disclosure policy .
I’ve rounded up 18 colorful and free lapbooks for your history unit studies. On my homeschool lapbooks page you can find them in chronological order if you plan that way.
If you’re wanting to cover history through a hands-on approach, then you’ll love lapbooks.
Besides, lapbooking can be used by a student on any level. And it can be crafty or not.
Lapbooks can be as much as the product of the student as he wants it to be, or he can use part put together.
Too, it’s a great hands-on tool for reviewing history.
In addition, there are many other reasons to use lapbooks while doing your history unit study.
If you’re focusing on reading a living book about history, then create separate mini books for the 5ws and 1H of writing — who, what, when, where, why, and how.
Some history unit studies will be more reading literature focused while others may be more event focused.
And with free lapbooks you can mix and match mini books depending on the history topic you’re focusing on.
Table of Contents
8 Easy Mini Books to Make for a History Lapbook
For example, look at these other mini books that your children could create based on any history topic.
1. Make an easy foldable timeline.
Timelines can be as easy or as complicated and extensive as your student wants. I love this one by Home School in the Woods.
2. Write a mini biography about a history maker.
In addition, a mini biography can be written in a quick glance fashion.
3. Sketch a geographical area referenced in your history topic .
Also, storing a hand drawn sketch in a pocket is a great reference tool for you student.
4. Draw mini maps.
Even a pretend map or mythical map brings a history to life.
5. Use strips to write vocabulary words.
Too, when your student uses sentence strips for vocabulary words, writing is not as overwhelming.
6. Compare natural resources of an area if your history topic is slanted toward natural resources.
Then how the natural resources of an area affects the people of the local area is another fun topic to write about.
7. Use a trifold mini book to compare 3 events or 3 people.
Moreover, if you’re wanting to compare and contrast, a trifold books can compare three people, three events, or even three dates.
8. A layered book could help your students visual the main religions or cultural difference.
As you can see this is a very short list of the mini books that you can include in your lapbook or that you can find in free lapbooks.
The advantage of course to any lapbook or history study is that you can follow your child’s interest.
And another advantage to the free lapbooks I create is that they are all colorful. Visual appeal matters.
For instance, when I graded lapbooks created by my children visual appeal counted. Because we live in a digital age, visual appeal matters more than ever.
Adding clip art to illustrate a history topic properly is equally important.
History Lapbook Materials
Additionally, the beauty of your history lapbook is that very little materials are needed. Sure, you can make it fancy like we have done at times.
For example, we used strips of leather and a beautiful colorful shell with a feather as a clasp to close our Plains Indians lapbook.
Also, I love colorful file folders instead of the drab plain ones.
Too, one more technique we like is to use the bright color for the inside of the file folder.
If your file folder is bright colored on both sides, then it doesn’t matter.
It’s just more visually appealing and it stays pretty through the years.

Free lapbooks are a fun way to add creativity and variety into your homeschool lessons! You can find free lapbooks for almost any interest and subject you want to study. I’ve arranged them here for you by subject, including history, music, math, science, language arts, and more.
Free Lapbooks for Homeschooling
My oldest daughter completed her first lapbook in 2009 and from that moment we were hooked. She enjoys using her arts and crafts creative skills to display what she has learned on just about any topic. Now her younger sisters are joining her as they learn to make lapbooks, too. I’ve found that they retain the information they put together in lapbooks and they like to refer back to them later, too. It’s like creating our own reference library and the lapbooks become both keepsakes and educational tools.

These can be downloaded instantly so learning is ready to go whenever you are! I hope this list is helpful as you’re searching for lapbooks to try, for whatever subject you may need.

Teach about Martin Luther in history for kids with this FREE biography lapbook. Grab three free lapbooks for the Who What Why history series.
That’s a question every child should be able to answer. After all, Martin Luther fought for the truth of the gospel in God’s inerrant, infallible, inspired Word.
Martin Luther is known as the Father of the Reformation, but his contributions to global history can’t be overemphasized, either. After all, he had a significant role in the end of feudalism and he created a unified German language.
History of Martin Luther for Kids
Your kids can learn about the history of Martin Luther with the new engaging book from Christian Focus Publications, Who Was Martin Luther? . It’s part of my new Who What Why series for middle grade kids, ages 8-11.

The minibooks and activities include:

Supplies You’ll Need for Your Martin Luther Biography Lapbook
You’ll need a few supplies to put together your lapbook. You probably already have most of these. If not, it’s worth investing in them as you will use them again and again with your kids.
- The Who What Why Reformation Series: Who Was Martin Luther?
- A Colored File Folder
- A Sheet of Cardstock in a Complimentary Color
- Printer Paper
- Colored Pens to Write With
- Colored Pencils to Color With
How to Print and Use Your Free Lapbook about the Bible
To create the base of your lapbook, place your file folder on a table and fold both sides inward toward the creased spine of the folder. Once the outer edges meet, crease your file folder. This will give you a book that opens in the middle. You will still have a fold in the middle of your book, so I like to glue a piece of cardstock into the middle section of the book to create a thick center that won’t bend.
You can watch a quick tutorial for your free lapbook above.
The Martin Luther Biography Lapbook will help your child learn and record important facts about the story of Martin Luther, with visuals they will not forget.

Bible Resources for Your Kids
Christian Biographies for Kids | Christian History for Kids | Theology for Kids
Christian History Matters for Our Kids.
History matters. Now, more than ever, we see how important it is for our children to know and understand history and the Bible.
Here’s why:
- God is the sovereign ruler of all things. It’s important for our kids to see his hand in the history of nations and in the lives of both peasants and kings.
- Christian history is the story of our family history. Our kids get to see how people who love Jesus follow him.
- Understanding history can help our kids learn historic and biblical theology. They learn what the Bible says and what that means for us. They also see when the study of Scripture has taken important turns that have changed the Church.
- Reading Christian biographies and history can be a wonderful way for kids to think outside their own time and culture. God’s Church spans centuries and includes people from every nation.
- Christian biographies help kids consider their own faith, walk with Jesus, and the impact their witness may one day have on others–and on history.

Free Biography Templates
A Biography Template is a pre-made structure that serves as the basis for drafting a biography. It has a general framework and layout which can be modified to meet the subject being written about. By using this format, you can make certain the biography is thorough, structured, and simple to read.
A professional biography template can be applied to a range of topics such as historic individuals, famous people, or individuals in your family. Their early childhood , schooling, profession, private life, accomplishments, and impact are frequently covered.
For a full list of Biography templates please feel free to check out our library below .
For learners that are unfamiliar with the category or who require assistance arranging their ideas and data, a biography template for students is useful. Similar to this, a Biography Outline Template can be useful for making sure that all crucial information is covered and the written biography is fair and impartial. There are times when students must evaluate a particular character from a book, in which case a character biography template would be perfect.
Although this blueprint might be a superb place to begin, it's crucial to keep in mind that it's only a reference. To make the contents of the biography distinctive and interesting, the author ought to employ their unique ingenuity and writing technique. In order to assure precision, the author ought to conduct additional research and confirm every fact
The conceptual framework may be created using a template. It offers a simple breakdown of the data that ought to be presented.
The goal of the text as well as its intended demographic should be taken into account when developing a biography . This will aid in directing the template's layout and contents. The following advice will help you construct a biography template:
The introduction needs to give readers a general outline of the subject's life and achievements . This may involve their location of origin, their family's history, and any important moments or encounters that shaped their entire existence;
The individual's upbringing and where they studied ought to be covered in this part . Provide details on their siblings, parents, and any other significant relatives, as well as the educational institutions which they attended, any noteworthy accomplishments they may have made, and any difficulties they may have encountered;
Any professional achievements and professional history need to be discussed in the following part . Add details regarding their previous employment , significant accomplishments, and any standout campaigns or tasks that they were a part of;
The individual's connections, pastimes, and passions must all be covered in the following paragraphs . Include details about their close companions, relatives, and any memorable occasions or events that impacted their personal lives;
Outline the individual's contribution to the world or country and their influence . Note down any details on groups or issues the person promoted and if applicable, any prizes or recognition that they have gained as a result;
It's crucial to keep your sentences simple and to the point while producing this text . Stay away from slang or specialized phrases that the audience may not be acquainted with, and instead, speak plainly.

Flap Book Templates for Your Lapbooks
Flap books are a lapbook staple. They are easy to make and fun to flip and flap as your student reviews or learns new information.
All of these flap book templates have covers. When my students created their own lapbooks, I found that the flaps would flip (and flop!) and get smashed when the lapbook was closed. To remedy this, I started adding covers to help to protect the flaps. Covers also provide a place to add a title and to draw an image.
If you don’t want to use a cover, no problem. Just cut if off and use the flap book as is.

Looking to spruce up your informative writing unit with student biographies? Host a living wax museum after having students research and write about famous influential figures!
Students will research the most important facts about a person , talk about how that figure has grown and changed over time, why they are so influential and then pick a character trait to describe that character.
Students will spend one week researching and taking notes on their famous figure. Then, students will turn take those notes through the writing process , transforming it into an informative report using 6 paragraphs.
This can be differentiated up or down. I have done it successfully with my second graders many times, and I have helped fourth graders complete this project as well.
End the unit by creating an interactive report and flip book all about their famous figure. We then invite other classrooms and parents to come through and see our “living wax museum” while students present what they have learned about their topic.
What’s Included?
14 Day Pacing Guide
2 Parent Letters (one inviting them to come, one just explaining the project)

Biography Planning Page
2 Versions of a Biography Draft Page
Biography Report Publishing Pages
4 Publishing Pages for the Interactive Flip Book
