Long and Short World Environment Day Speech

World environment day speech – 1 (500 words, 5 minutes speech).

Good Morning Friends!

World Environment day is celebrated annually on 5 th June across the world. We have assembled here to make plans for this year celebration. Our company always advocate green environment and preservation of nature. You must be aware that the technology used in our manufacturing unit also supports green environment. We are highly the promoters of green India; our production units are well equipped with latest machines and equipment that consume less water and energy, thus causing less wastage of water and energy. The unit releases no or less pollutant or poisonous gases, which also preserves nature, water and the environment ultimately.

In order to strengthen our country and the world, it is important that the nature is preserved. The mushroom growth factories and manufacturing units has also led to the explosion of pollution, rays, gas, dust, etc which is deteriorating the quality of air we are breathing in, water we are consuming everyday and the environment we are surviving in.

The state government has given us this responsibility to create awareness amongst the factory owners, business tycoons and manufacturing units to share the benefits of green technology. In the same regards, we’ll be organising a meeting soon in which we will inform them about the technologies we use to preserve the nature.

We are also appealing to common people across India to plant trees, clean up the surroundings and take actions against those that harm animals. We also request people to save water and energy at their respective places as much as possible.

At this forum, I would also highlight some of the diseases related to unhygienic living conditions and dirty water. Water is the main source of energy, but if it remains stagnant or unclean then it becomes the source of several dangerous diseases such as Dengue, Malaria, etc. It, therefore, becomes important that every individual owns his/her social responsibility and take all the preventive measures to cover the uncovered water like tanks, pots or coolers.

Now let’s discuss about the disposal of garbage; it is been wildly observed that many people throw used-litter in the open area. Our government has taken steps and fixed the ‘Green coloured’ and ‘Blue coloured’ dustbins at almost every public place. It is sincerely appealed to the people to kindly use those dustbins and use the colour symbol correctly for the wet and dry garbage.

Life can be very simple and fulfilling if we follow certain principles and trust me; these simple formulas cost no money and involve no hassles yet prove to be very effective.

World Environment Day is celebrated to raise awareness about nature and the significance of protecting environment for present and future. For sustaining life on this planet Earth, it is critical that the world’s forests, oceans and soils are preserved and these act as great stores for greenhouse gases like methane and carbon dioxide; fisher-folk and farmers bind nature in order to provide us with food. Scientists and researchers develop medicines using these natural products since ages.

Nature’s gifts are rare and cannot be purchased from money. It is important that each one of us wake up before it’s too late. Don’t smoke in the public places or dump garbage in the open area. These small beginnings will certainly lead to a better place for survival.

World Environment Day Speech – 2 (500 Words, 5 Minutes Speech)

Dear friends, hope you all are enjoying your day so far. Thank you for being a part of this celebration. We all have gathered here to celebrate the World Environment Day which commemorate every year on 5 th June. I have been given this opportunity to host the programme this year and I promise to utilize this platform to the fullest.

What is environment? Many of you must be feeling surprised and some of you must be finding me stupid as I ask this question. Environment is our immediate surrounding and in recent times we have been hearing a lot of debates, discussion, events, occasions, etc around saving the environment. I often wonder if it is really such a grave issues that invites a lot of debates and discussions! Well, the answer is ‘Yes’. We have made it critical. Man is surprisingly the creation of God who creates and destroys its own surroundings. We are smart and intelligent enough to know what pollutes the environment and what are the ways to protect it; but still we choose to remain silent and inactive.

The celebration of World Environment Day provides people with an opportunity to come forward and know the reasons behind the deterioration of our environment and discuss various means and methods to save and preserve it. Started in 1974, this day has grown and become a global platform for public outreach that is broadly celebrated across the world.

Our school celebrates this day with equal enthusiasm and zeal as we strongly believe that good manners must be taught to people since their childhood itself. I have seen that children are highly excited and start the preparation in advance. Every year, we celebrate this day with different themes. This year, our theme is ‘Plant trees and make the surrounding green’. Every student has to write an essay on this theme, decorate their respective classes in Green all with natural materials; you can use leaves, grasses, etc. The winning students in the essay competition and the winning class will receive exciting prizes. Besides this, each student will be provided with a plant for planting at home, park, garden or at any place which seems appropriate. Students are requested to get a photograph clicked while planting and interestingly top five pictures would get published in our annual school magazine.

It is also essential that we educate our children not to pollute their homes, roads, schools or living surrounding with litter such as empty can, chips, chocolate wrappers, etc. No wonder, we instil these habits at the school level, but parents should also take their due responsibilities and educate kids about the significance of the Green and Blue dustbins. Children shouldn’t be allowed to de-root small plants in the park, gardens or road sides. Grown up people should be mindful not to smoke at the public places and save the air from getting polluted. Water at every place should be kept covered, no energy and water should be wasted and garbage and litter shouldn’t be burnt in the open environment.

As much important it is to preserve nature, it is equally simple. All we have to do is just be little aware, cautious and responsible.

Speech on World Environment Day – 3 (500 Words, 5 Minutes Speech)

Good morning respected principal, teachers and my dear friends,

For addressing the assembly today, I have been assigned the topic ‘World Environment Day’.

My dear friends, what does environment mean to you all? It is the natural world, our surroundings. This World environment day is the day especially devoted to address our overall environment and the issues that presently exist in our environment. Our immunity and well being directly depends on the situation of the environment. Bad the environment bad is our living and vice versa.

Due to various human activities the quality of environment in which we live is deteriorating. And the rate of this decline is too quick or too high if I may say. Human should necessarily work on their activities like industrialization, deforestation, technological development, global warming, pollution, waste management, etc. If they wish to live in a safe and healthy environment. On this day we should recognize the need of how important environment is to us and at present what all issues have taken place in this environment. It is us who can work on making things better and this is not only for us but for good of others as well.

This day aims to engage and draw attention of all the citizens of the world including political and health organizations to be more specific across the globe from different countries. And, to make them curious about making new plans and implementing them for the betterment of the environment. A healthy and safe environment is the way towards the happy and more progressive future. Government should lay down more projects just like swachh bharat to make people more attached to the environment’s maintenance.

We tend to put everything on to the legal and political entities solely for the initiation of such plans and acts that bind us for being active towards the environment. We people have all the right and authority to do our bit for having a safe and healthy environment. By growing more trees, discarding waste properly, evading the pollution, use of solar energy, etc are very few things which one made necessary will help us in having live in a great environment.

We all should create awareness on large scale amongst the population on maintaining the sustainable environment by ensuring correct and minimal use of the natural resources and doing our bit by doing the earlier mentioned few tasks. Stabilized environment today will help in the better maintenance of the coming future generations as well. We all have to be cautious about everything that we do, as each of the minute thing done adds on to the pool of adverse things impacting the environment. People should necessarily link themselves to the different acts of the government that focus on environment maintenance and should make more people gathered at the special seminars and sessions organized on this day.

Safe environment is a healthy well being of humans, plants and animals. We must attain the final result of safe environment. Thank You everyone!

Speech on World Environment Day – 4 (500 Words, 5 Minutes Speech)

Good morning my dear friends, we all are gathered here today to acknowledge the importance of the ‘World Environment Day’. I am obliged to address this topic amongst you all today.

It is very very important for us to live in an environment that is safe. The need today is to improve the level and intensity of the global awareness about our environment amongst all. Out of the entire population most of the people are unaware about how important it is to have a sustainable environment. Each year celebration of the world environment day is prepared in accordance with the specific themes and by having specific slogans for that theme to bring success in the campaign around the globe.

We all should focus on doing the deeds that get positives in the environment and tend to stabilize the traits of environment. Sheer focus should be on minimizing the activities that release toxins and population in the air and make the environment unhealthy for the living of man, plants and animals. We ourselves need to stand strong for living in quality surroundings that help us in living a life that is less of diseases and free from the unhealthy zeal of diminished resources.

Every year this day is celebrated to make people aware about the results that occur in environment due to their day to day activities and the issues being faced by each one of us due to these. The other agenda about having this dedicated day is to make people cautious of how important it is to have a safe and healthy environment.

We all should know the importance of the environment. We should work on growing more of the trees so that overcoming other negativities existing currently in the environment become easier and quicker. This day should be attended with utmost importance and every individual should be a part of the seminars, sessions, rallies, etc organized on this day. Though environment is such a crucial topic that addressing it only once a year is not enough but yes, it is good at least for initiating and evaluating our deeds done for the environment throughout the year.

We humans should realize our mistakes and address the existing concerns about the environment in order to keep it of utmost quality. It should be clean, safe and secure for the healthy life of all humans, plants and animals. By adopting few activities we can easily diminish the bad impacts currently happening in the environment. We should make people more aware about how important it is to breathe in a safe quality environment. Thank you! I am sure we all together can surely eliminate the negativities that are present in the environment. Optimized usage of natural resources should be our first target on catering and doing our bit for the environment’s sustainability. We all should support people to create their surroundings secure and clean to enjoy disease free and immune lifestyle along with risk-free, better and successful future.

Thank you all for being a part of this session. Together we all can do the good for our environment. Thank you!

Speech On World Environment Day - 10 Lines, Short and Long Speech

  • Speech On World Environment Day

According to science, everything in our environment is part of us. Our environment is made up of both live organisms and non-living things. The non-living or abiotic components are air, water, soil, and so on, whereas the living or biotic components are things like plants, animals, and bacteria.

Speech On World Environment Day - 10 Lines, Short and Long Speech

More than 100 nations worldwide participate in the World Environment Day commemoration.

The United Nations Environmental Program initiated it in 1973 and has continued ever since.

Raising awareness of the environment is the primary goal of this day.

Humans have disrupted the planet's average equilibrium, which is gradually making our environment unfit for living.

We must therefore make our environment more friendly and undo the damage we have caused.

On this day, world leaders assemble to debate how air pollution, global warming, deforestation, and wild forest fires affect the environment.

World Environment Day is a reminder to protect the environment at all costs and make the world a better place.

Additionally, it motivates members of the general public from various cultures and communities to participate actively in the event.

For everyone to enjoy a cleaner, greener, and more prosperous future, it promotes everyone to maintain their surroundings safe and tidy.

A day specifically out to recognise and address all environmental problems is known as World Environment Day. Additionally, it is referred to as WED, Eco Day, and Environment Day. It is a remarkable annual event that focuses on environmental problems and works to find lasting solutions.

For years, it has been observed worldwide with various artistic endeavours and a passion for fostering environmental improvements. For as long as there is the prospect of healthy life on earth, it seeks to preserve the natural environment.

The United Nations General Assembly declared it in 1972 during the opening of a conference on the human environment, and it has been celebrated annually on June 5 since then. The day's purpose is to increase public awareness of the importance of a healthy and green environment on earth and raise money for environmental causes. The specific subject of the year (as announced by the UN) that focuses on putting innovative and effective measures to save the environment determines how it is annually observed.

It intends to engage and capture the attention of millions of people and political and health organisations from various nations worldwide to develop and carry out new programmes. To prevent detrimental environmental changes, addressing concerns like food loss and waste, rising global temperatures, deforestation, pollution, industrialization, etc., is imperative.

The environment is the most crucial tool for our prolonged existence on Earth. Our environment supports and sustains us. Life would be impossible without soil, water, and air. Biotic elements like plants and animals serve as essential survival tools as well. Plants clean the air we breathe. Animals and vegetation provide us with food. The ecological web is a network of relationships in which every element of the environment is interdependent. This network must be balanced because if one part disintegrates, the entire system will deteriorate and wipe out all life. Because of this, we must decide to act to protect the environment and repair the harm we caused.

World Environment Day originated during the UN Conference on Human Environment, organised in Sweden, from June 5 to 16, 1972. The conference's focus was on human action and its effects on the environment. As a result of the conference, it was resolved to observe World Environment Day to spread awareness of how human activity affects the environment.

Since 1974, when the first World Environment Day was observed, it has been an annual tradition as an UN-sponsored global campaign for preserving and advancing the environment. The entire environment, including the marine population, oceans, forests, animals, reptiles, water bodies, etc., is celebrated on World Environment Day. Every aspect of the environment that is impacted by human activity is addressed.

The day also highlights issues that impact the environment and the life it supports, such as overpopulation, global warming, etc. By bringing governments and people together, it aims to provide the environmental cause with a global platform and elevate the protection of the environment. Each year, the UN designates a particular topic for the festivities in this regard.

Planetary Emergencies

People and wildlife need to adjust quickly enough to the warming climate.

An estimated one million species are endangered due to habitat degradation and other factors.

Our air, land, and water continue to be contaminated by pollution.

This urgent need for action makes "Only One Earth" and its emphasis on living sustainably in harmony with nature as relevant as ever. Making our economy and society more inclusive, just, and linked to nature is the solution to this problem. We need to switch from damaging to mending the world.

Larger organisations—national and sub-national governments, financial institutions, corporations, international organisations, and other groups with the authority to rewrite the laws, define our goals, and open up new horizons—can only produce many of these options.

Initiatives In Our School

Connecting with nature is the most significant way to observe World Environment Day. When I was in school, my teacher planned an educational trip when she took us to a local park or zoo and assisted us in discovering the wonders of nature. She gave us composting instructions like, every family produces a sizable amount of biowaste, which can be used for composting. For the growth of plants, organic material can be added. We gathered newspapers, tea bags, eggshells, fruit and vegetable peels, and other biowaste to prepare compost. After preparing the compost, we distributed it to the plants.

Speech Writing About Environment

Let’s face it- every single time we listen to a speech on the environment, we expect a certain monotony and repetition in terms of the content.

And, this shortens our attention span, all the way more.

Well, it’s sad that a topic as dynamic and relevant as this can bore you to sleep if not presented well.

So, as an orator, how do you still stand out in the crowd?

Here are a few tips for you to master the art of writing a speech about the environment, without bringing the element of monotony.

But, before we dive into the speech writing and delivery lessons, let us have a look at how the environment is an evergreen topic when it comes to public speaking.

Important Environment Days call for Great Speeches

Apart from the fact that ‘the environment’ is a dynamic and ever-present topic, the important environment days spanning throughout the year call for you to get ready with your best speech on the environment. To list a few-

SPEECH WRITING ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT

2. speech writing lessons on the environment: complete guide , 3. drawing inspiration from ‘great speeches on the environment’  , 4. a sample speech on the environment .

Hold on till the very end of this blog as we have a bonus tip to simplify this process, just for you.

1. Tips to Remember Before You Write your Speech

Crafting a movie requires the crew to plan everything with utmost precision and that’s exactly where the pre-production stage comes to play.

Likewise, before drafting a speech on the environment, you need to focus upon a few things to enhance the speech’s impact on your audience.

At the same time, these tips will help you to stand out in the crowd.

A) Understanding your True Purpose

know your true purpose as a speaker

You possibly cannot deliver a speech about the environment without feeling deeply about the issue.

Firstly, start by questioning yourself, ‘Why should I be concerned about  our environment ?’

Now, start looking for even the slightest changes in your lifestyle in terms of the environment.

These changes can be as evident as the scarcity of water and as ignored as the less appreciation of nature by humans.

This will provide you with the reasons as to how is the issue affecting you?

These reasons can be listed by you during the course of your speech to establish trust, credibility and relatability factor.

Get yourself aware of the urgency of the situation

Go on the internet, research the issue at hand and make yourself aware of the worst-case scenario, that is, ‘what would happen if human beings do not respond now?’

This way, you will connect with the issue emotionally and this will reflect in your voice as you deliver your speech.

You simply cannot expect your audience to feel deeply about the issue unless you yourself feel that emotional connect.

Because somewhere down the corner, we all are responsible for environmental degradation in our own ways.

This realization must first hit you before you convey this idea through your speech.

This emotional connect will reflect in the form of:

  • the content of your speech
  • vocal variety
  • body language

B) Brainstorming Session

mind mapping technique

A speech as informative as this needs to have right facts in just the right amount and at the right places.

The major issue with most of the environmental speeches is that the right facts are not incorporated in the right way.

  • So, begin with researching the issue and note down the environmental facts.
  • Prepare a mind map to better organize your thoughts . Jot down the main points and make a rough skeleton of your speech.
  • Once you have done this, try thinking from an audiences’ perspective . Ask yourself, ‘If I were the audience, what would be my expectations from a speech about the environment?’ Note down those thoughts as well.

Try not to be generic while doing the brainstorming session, include the pointers other speakers have missed out on.

In order to stand unique as an orator speaking about the environment, one must learn from the mistakes made by other speakers.

Understand what exactly is your audience looking for and frame your speech accordingly.

We have written an article on How to add facts in a speech? Check it out to balance your speech about the environment with just the right facts.

C) Who is your audience?

audience analysis

A speech about the environment has a dynamic audience . Thus, it can be delivered at a school, college or even a workplace for that matter.

Understand the demographics of your audience, like age and level of education, to mold your speech accordingly.

For instance, if you are delivering a speech about the environment at school, you might want to include less jargon and break down the content in a much simpler way for the students to understand.

Similarly, if you are delivering an environmental speech at a workplace, you can incorporate jargon along with relatable lifestyle experiences to convey your ideas better.

In a nutshell, formulate the content of your speech according to the audience you are catering to.

D) Duration of the speech

Instead of beating around the bush, a good orator tries to make a long-lasting impact without taking too much time of the audience.

Thus, try to keep your speech short and precise without falling into the trap of possible digressions.

After listening to so many speeches on the environment, we all know our expectations from the next speech we listen about the environment.

Thus, most important of all, prioritize the information and interestingly present that information. This way, you give away the essential information while retaining the attention of your audience.

We have written an article on How to deliver a 1-minute speech: Tips, Examples, Topics & More . Have a look at it to make your speech memorable within a short time frame.

Once you’ve learned this, the next step is to have smooth transitions in your speech. This is done to avoid any sort of blabber and convey the ideas effectively.

To know more about smooth speech transitions, check out Effective Speech Transitions: How to Make Your Speech Flow .

A) Out-Of-The-World Title

A speech about the environment can create a certain monotony in the minds of the audience, even before you actually deliver it.

As an audience, we expect that monotony in the environmental speeches.

Thus, a boring speech title can bore your audience to sleep.

Many a times, we stumble upon a speech title we haven’t ever heard of and are naturally drawn to know more about the speech.

The major issue with most of the environmental speeches in current times is a boring title. Titles like  Speech on Save Environment and Speech on Environmental Degradation  can seem pretty daunting to the audience and might disinterest them.

Instead, consider having a thought-provoking title that doesn’t give the speech idea away so that when the audience actually listens to your speech, they pay more attention and start connecting the dots.

This way, something unusual yet related to your speech can assist you to hold the attention of your audience.

Let’s look at a few interesting speech titles. All based on the environment!

Admit it, we’ve grown old reading that water is an essential pre-requisite for the crops to survive and grow.

But, what happens when a speech title tells you otherwise? You obviously get drawn to listen to the speech.

I’m sure after reading this speech title, you are now wondering, ‘which country is she talking about?’

So, the moment you come across a speech title like this, a sense of conflict has been created in your mind and you naturally want to know more about it.

B) Catchy Introduction

A catchy introduction begins with a strong opening line while bringing into light the main idea of the speech.

The attention span of the audience is at its peak at the beginning of a speech. So, now that you know this, make sure you capitalize it!

Instead of starting your speech with something as bland as a  Good Morning , attempt hitting new approaches to grip the attention of the audience throughout the speech.

The last thing a speech topic as common as the environment needs is a bland introduction.

Thus, working on a strong beginning is the most crucial element when it comes to speech writing about environment.

Here are a few interesting ways to jump start your speech:

Start with a story

We all love listening to stories! Be it fictional or real . It’s a personality trait which we all share in common.

You can start your speech on the environment with a story inspired from your own personal experience or you can create your own story.

But, remember even while creating a story from scratch, you need to sound realistic and establish relatability . So, it’s ideal to avoid any sort of exaggeration on your part.

Once you have decided on the story you wish to tell, remember to connect your story with the environment, in general.

To assist you in this process of crafting a story, we have written an article on 9 Storytelling Approaches for Your Next Speech . Check it out to know more!

In this TED Talk, the speaker begins by telling a story about camping by revisiting his childhood days. This gripped the attention of the audience all the way more.

Bringing the Element of Creativity

Use of adequate props and placards can assist you to add real value to the audiences’ experiences, particularly in a speech about the environment.

Think out-of-the-box and bring this element of creativity the next time you deliver a speech.

By bringing this visual element, you make your speech all the more memorable.

Let’s understand this better with the help of an example.

In this TED Talk about the environment, the orator decides to begin her speech by bringing a small jar. Have a look at how well she connects this prop with the essence of her speech.

C) Relatable Anecdotes

Well, what is the point of delivering a great speech if your audience can’t relate to it?

By stating relatable life experiences, you sound more realistic and believable . As a result, the audience starts respecting your thoughts.

For instance, while delivering a speech about environmental problems and solutions, start discussing how the environmental problems have affected you and your family and what solutions you are considering to deal with it.

Essentially, convey these anecdotes in the form of a story and make sure that these anecdotes are relatable.

D) Body of the speech

Here lies the main purpose of your speech!

It is at this point that you start supporting your ideas with relevant facts and evidence .

In this case, while delivering a speech about the environment, be aware of the real purpose of your speech.

If your speech about the environment is required to list down the solutions to save the environment, try leading the solutions with the micro-level steps which we all can practice in our day-to-day lives and then move onto the solutions at a community level.

Because the major flaw with most of the environmental speeches is that we focus a lot more upon the changes at a government level rather than bringing into light the changes at the individual and community level.

It all begins at home and then the awareness is spread at a community level.

Steer clear of stating the obvious while citing supporting shreds of evidence and think innovatively to come up with information that can actually add value to audiences’ experiences.

E) Drafting a Memorable Conclusion

A captivating conclusion keeps your speech alive in the minds of the audience.

First things first, avoid ending your speech with a bland ‘thank you’.

Instead, in the concluding statement, sum up the gist of your speech and provide the audience with a key takeaway.

To maximize the impact of your concluding remarks, end your speech with a poem or an intriguing question, and leave your audience awestruck by providing them with something to ponder upon.

Check this article to learn effective ways to end your speech with maximum impact.

F) Set the Right Mood

Setting the right tone of the speech is extremely crucial.

This way, you guide your audience to perceive your thoughts in just the intended manner.

You can set the right tone with the help of effective body language , facial expressions and voice modulation.

For instance, while delivering a speech about the environment which demands you to cite the solutions, a sense of hope must be reflected throughout the course of your speech. You can achieve this by sounding optimistic in your voice and having open body language.

In a similar fashion, a speech about the environmental problems would require you to sound empathetic in your voice.

4. A Sample Speech on the Environment

“Why should I be studying for a future that soon may be no more, when no one is doing anything to save that future?”, asked Greta Thunberg, and I’m sure we all are in search of an answer to this question, more so in these unprecedented times when the entire world is at a standstill. Environmental depletion, a term we take so lightly, has been increasing with each year passing by. This year (2020 as of writing), Earth Overshoot Day was observed on August 22, exhausting nature’s budget for the year in just seven months. Even as I speak and you listen to this speech, The residents of Goa are raising their voices against an infrastructure plan which is all set to cut through Mollem National Park and destroy the habitat of thousands of animals. Even as I speak, 10,000 clothing items are being sent to landfills every 5 minutes. All because of Fast Fashion! Even as I speak, more than 80 percent of the world population is living under light-polluted skies. All because of light pollution!  And, when we actually reflect upon all of these things, there’s no one to blame but us.  Yet, we choose to remain silent.  So, I ask you today,   Why are we silent? Why don’t we care about the planet we live on?  I believe that by choosing to remain silent over the environmental issues, we are doing a disgrace to the very act of humanity.  Ain’t we ought to save this environment while we still can?  I know that since time immemorial, we have grown up learning about sustainability. In the most literal sense, we PREACH sustainability. But when it comes to bringing that into practice, our values shy away.  All of a sudden, we start to run short of time. You know why? The reason is we don’t appreciate our environment, anymore. And, that’s the root cause that is holding us back in the pathway towards sustainability.  I still remember when I was 10 years old, my father and I had this really nice ritual of going to the park for evening walks. Back then, it just didn’t matter what headspace we’re in, the air of calmness that surrounded the park would just put us at ease. It was THAT therapeutic!   But, coming back to this so-called modern mechanized era, we’ve parted our ways with this ritual. Now, in these times, even the thought of going to a park sounds cliché to all of us!   We need to learn to appreciate, nurture, and love our environment in order to save it. Because it all begins at home! You and I CAN make the difference and now is the time to inculcate sustainable lifestyle habits. The first step here can be as simple as cutting down the waste we produce in the environment. Be it in terms of buying packaged fruits and vegetables from a farmers’ market or making the area you live in litter-free. Moving ahead, the next step might sound a bit difficult because let’s face it- We ALL love shopping! But, when it comes to leading a sustainable lifestyle, minimalism is the key. Start prioritizing every single time you shop for something. When you do this, you value things you own and don’t end up wasting so much.  Gladly, to our relief, the world isn’t that pessimistic. In this age of globalization, we now have people as ‘environmental influencers’ initiating a call for action. Let’s shower our love and support towards them by drawing inspiration from them.  Therefore, I now say,  Let’s pledge to align our values and actions.  Let’s pledge to spend more time in nature.  And most important of all, let’s pledge to save this planet while we are on this planet.

Speech on World Environment Day (700 Words)

Good morning friends!

World Environment Day is celebrated worldwide on June 5 every year. It is about raising global awareness of our environment. Do you know when World Environment Day started? In 1972, the United Nations Convention on Human Environment was held from June 5 to June 16. After that, it will be hosted by different countries around the world on June 5 each year with different themes.

We gathered here to plan this year’s celebration. Our organization always advocates green climate and nature conservation. You should be aware that the technology used in our manufacturing department also supports green weather.

We are promoters of Green India; Our production units have the newest machinery and equipment that consumes less water and energy, resulting in less wastage of water and energy. The group releases less or fewer pollutants or toxic gases, which ultimately protect nature, water, and the environment.

In 2011, our country was the global host of World Environment Day. Does anyone know what this ‘green economy’ means, as I said this year’s theme is “Green Economy”? It is a fiscal improvement procedure that will diminish environmental risks. Now, the economy is considered a part of it. The ecosystem of businesses understands that the future of the industry depends on the green world.

To safeguard our country and the world, nature must be protected. Mushroom growth factories and manufacturing units are responsible for explosions of pollution, rays, gas, dirt, etc., which worsen the air quality we breathe, the water we consume, and the environment we live.

The state authority has given us this responsibility to educate factory owners, commercial entrepreneurs, and manufacturing sectors to share the benefits of green technology. In this prospect, we will soon hold a conference in which we will inform of the technologies we use to protect nature.

We appeal to the general public across India to plant as many as trees , clean up the surroundings, and take action against those who cause harm to animals. We urge people to save water and energy in their respective areas.

In this forum, I will also highlight some illnesses and some diseases related to sewage. Water is a significant source of energy, but if it is sustainable or unhygienic, it can become a source of many dangerous diseases, such as dengue and malaria. Therefore, everyone needs to have their social responsibility and embrace everything — preventive measures to cover open water such as tanks, ducts, or coolers.

Let us now discuss the disposal of waste; It seems cruel to throw away the trash that most people use. Our government has taken action and set up a Dustbin of ‘Green Color’ and ‘Blue Color’ in almost every public place. It honestly urges people to use those dustbins and to use the color symbol for wet and dry trash properly.

Life is straightforward and fulfilling if we believe in following a few principles. These simple principles do not cost money and have no impediments, yet prove to be very useful.

World Environment Day celebrates the importance of raising awareness about nature and protecting the environment for the present and future. For the planet to survive on Earth it is essential to preserve the world’s forests, oceans, and soils and serve as significant reserves for greenhouse gases such as methane and carbon dioxide; Fisheries-folk and farmers capture nature to provide us with food. Scientists and researchers have developed drugs using these natural products from across the ages.

Nature gifts are rare and cannot be bought with money. Each of us must get up very late. Do not smoke in public places or throw trash in a public place. These small startups will undoubtedly pave the way for a better place to survive.

I do not give a long speech. On this fantastic day, I would like to say one thing; try to plant as many trees as possible because we are dependent on the tree. Try planting at least one tree for any special occasion, such as your birthday or anniversary.

Speech on World Environment Day for Students and Children

In this article, we have provided the speech template for World Environment Day for Students and Children. In many competitions

Reported by Anshika Saxena

Published on 30 April 2024

In this article, we have provided the speech template for World Environment Day for Students and Children . In many competitions like extempore and debates in school, students are asked to give speeches on various environmental issues. Students can also be asked to give morning speeches. To help them, students can go through the following article and take some ideas on preparing a Speech on World Environment Day.

Good morning, everyone. I’m here to brief you about World Environment Day today.

World Environment Day is celebrated every year on the 5th of June. It is a day to raise awareness about the importance of protecting our environment and to promote action to safeguard it. The environment is the space where we live in. It is all the land, air, and water. The environment is important for all living organisms.

In recent times, with increasing anthropogenic activities, the destruction of the environment has become severe. As students, we play a crucial role in preserving the environment and ensuring a sustainable future for ourselves and future generations. In this speech , I will talk about the significance of World Environment Day and the steps we can take to protect our environment.

Steps should be taken at individual levels to protect the environment. We, as students, are the future generations to save this environment and earth.

Saving our planet is not just a responsibility of the government or an organization but a collective responsibility and duty of every citizen living here. As humans, we are the only ones who have created objects of the destruction of our environment, and it is up to us only to correct this. One of the biggest environmental challenges that we face today is climate change.

The major cause of climate change is Global warming caused by human activities such as burning fossil fuels, deforestation, and industrial processes. The incoming solar radiation gets trapped, increasing the surface temperature by 1 degree yearly. This temperature rise is not something to be taken lightly. It leads to rising sea levels, extreme weather events, and biodiversity loss.

Polar ice is continuously melting, which, in turn, increases the sea level. Deforestation is again a major threat which we have tackled. A more sustainable approach should be taken without compromising the future of the upcoming generation. We need to take immediate action to reduce our carbon footprint and prevent the worst effects of climate change.

As students, we can take several steps to protect the environment.

  • Firstly, we can reduce our use of plastic. Plastic is one of the most harmful environmental materials; it takes hundreds of years to decompose. Re-use, Reduce, and Recycle should be the motto of every individual. We can use alternatives such as cloth bags, glass bottles, and metal straws to reduce our plastic consumption. Single-use plastic should be banned completely, and its alternatives should be used.
  • Secondly, we can conserve water. Water is a precious resource , and we must use it wisely. We can turn off the tap while brushing our teeth, take shorter showers, and fix any leaks in our homes. We can also collect rainwater and use it for gardening and other purposes. With the advancement of technology, more emphasis should be given to rainwater harvesting and modern age irrigation methods like drip irrigation. We should educate others about using water wisely.
  • Thirdly, we can reduce our energy consumption. We can turn off lights and electronic devices when we are not using them, use energy-efficient appliances, and switch to renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power. Solar and wind energy use should be encouraged among the population.
  • Fourthly, we can plant trees. Trees play a vital role in controlling climate change as they absorb atmospheric carbon dioxide. We can plant trees in our schools and communities to create green spaces and reduce air pollution . A proper balance should be maintained between deforestation and afforestation. Locals should be educated about the consequences of climate change.
  • Finally, we can spread awareness about the importance of protecting the environment. People should be made aware of steps they can take toward protecting the environment. We can organize campaigns, seminars, and events to raise awareness about the impact of human activities on the environment and the steps we can take to protect it.

Conclusion of Speech

In conclusion, World Environment Day is a day to raise awareness about the importance of protecting our environment and to promote action to safeguard it. As students, we can take several steps to protect the environment, such as reducing our use of plastic, conserving water, reducing our energy consumption, planting trees, and spreading awareness. We, as responsible inhabitants of this planet, should do everything in our power to protect this planet, which is our home.

Let us pledge to take action and protect our environment for a sustainable future. Remember, every small step counts, and together if work we can make a difference. Our planet can be saved by us only. Thank you.

Excessive Use of Natural Resources Leads to Depletion In The End.

Radioactive materials are – without exception I would state – firm persuasive environmental speech topics and essay discourse themes for students. E.g.:

Radio Active Waste Management.

Intensive farming has many pros and cons. In the next example I deal with the cons. Note that each of them could be used as single persuasive environmental speech topics for a debate or essay:

The Disadvantages of Intensive Farming.

You also could take the opposite side and defend the pro-intensive farming arguments by attacking and replacing them for reasons in favor of the supporters of intensive farming. That will provoke immediate discussion among your listeners. Furthermore I would like to share alternative options for persuasive environmental speech topics:

  • Endangered species;
  • Marine debris and microplastics;

Welcome Speech for World Environment Day (For school/ Educational Institutions)

The environment is the biggest treasure of our life. It is not only just plants and animals but also human beings, the neighborhood, and the institutions which make up our character. Good morning to our respected principal sir/ma’am ( his/ her name), teachers, non-teaching staff, and all our students present here. Today is 5th June, World Environment Day, when the whole world rejoices to celebrate the environment where we are so intrinsic.

The environment is something that cannot be denied. Even the denial of the same will result in tremendous destruction. Recently the statistics show how pollution has increased. Because of this torture and negligence towards the environment that has resulted in our destruction. We are the children of nature and our first and foremost duty lies in the protection of mother nature. Without her air, sunlight, water, flora, and fauna it would have been impossible for us to thrive. Today’s celebration of this blessing of nature which we can never completely pay our debts.

So let’s begin with our journey today. At first, we would begin with an inaugural song by the students of class (standard of the choir), who will dedicate this song to the essential duties of nature and how she is constantly fulfilling it. I would like to call them on the stage.

Welcome Speech (For non-Educational Institutions)

Good morning/ afternoon/ evening to our honorable chief guest/ minister/ secretary ( his/her name), our important society members, and all are the participants present here. Today is 5th June, World Environment Day, which we specifically celebrate to honour the beauty that nature is. Every day when we wake up we see how nature plays a vital role in our life. From the wood that we use to make our bed to the water that we drink at the end of our night all belong to nature.

All are gifts of nature including human beings. The plants, animals, insects, and our neighbours, the climate, weather, and the landmass all are natural resources. The coal and petroleum beneath the soil, the strong water current that runs the turbine for electricity, and the pure air that we breathe in our parts of nature. So to celebrate nature we have gathered here today. We will begin our journey today with an inaugural song by (his/her name).

After the Welcome Song (For School or Educational Institution)

Thank you so much for this wonderful song. It describes so beautifully the essence of nature and how constantly she is at our help. We can never forget how nature is constantly serving us the purpose of our lives. I will thank the choir for this wonderful composition.

And now I will request our respected principal sir/ma’am ( his/ her name) share with us the importance of 5th June and how she feels to share her birthday on such a wonderful occasion. Sir/ ma’am, the stage is all yours.

After the Welcome Song (For Non-Educational Institutions)

It was a lovely song that describes how important nature is in our lives. I thank you heartily for this amazing presentation, ( his/ her name).

Now I would request our chief guest/ minister/ secretary of ( the name of the institution), ( his/her name) to deliver a speech on this auspicious day. Before he/she comes upon the stage I would like to make a small introduction. ( His/her name) has been long associated with UNO organizations regarding natural care and ecosystem maintenance. He/she has done several campaigns and seminars regarding the preservation and conservation of natural wealth. He/she has even worked in the Sundarbans tiger conservation areas for the protection and preservation of wildlife. It is an honor to have him/ her between us today. I will request him/ her to come on the stage.

After the Chief Guest’s Speech (For Schools or Educational Institutions)

Thank you so much sir/ma’am for this energetic speech. You can have your seat and enjoy the rest of the program with us. What sir/ ma’am said is so perfectly true. We always say that we need to respect nature. Yet in our practical life we hardly ever do so. How often do we plant a tree or protect one from being cut down? If we think deeply then we never actually do so and end up complaining that nature is getting polluted. It is our duty like all other national duties to look after our environment.

And now we will proceed with our next performance. A semi-classical dance stage by (his/her name). A big round of applause for him/her.

After the Chief Guest’s Speech (For Non-educational Institutions)

Thank you so much sir/ma’am for this boosting speech. It is always an honor to have you within us. Sadly enough sir/ma’am will not be able to continue this program with us because of his extremely busy schedule. We would honor him with a memento, sash, and a bouquet. I will request our head to hand over the honor to him/ her

And now we will move on with our next performance. It is a solo dance performance on semi-classical steps by one of our talented members (his/her name). A big round of applause for him/ her.

After the Dance Performance (For Schools or Educational Institutions)

Thank you so much, (his/her name) for such a lovely performance. It’s truly magnificent to have you on different occasions. Your performance is quite blissful to lift our moods.

When I was a child I remember my school organizing a specific event on 5th June. That was planting a seed or a sapling. Throughout the year we have to practice plantations. There were several classes where we learned the preservation and cleaning of a seed, how to properly sow the seed, and how to properly displace one sapling from one pot to another.

It was a meticulous and entertaining task to learn to care for nature. One such event has been organized today as well.  All of you will be given a packet of seeds, soil, and a pot. All you will have to do is to carefully plant the seed and write your name on the paper provided and stick it on the pot. These sports will be preserved in our school gallery and will be given back to the students once they have bloomed. So let’s start.

After the Dance Performance (For Non-educational Institutions)

The dance was beautiful and quite charming in the way it showcased the beauty of nature. Thank you so much for this performance. You can have your seat.

Now we will give a break to the continuous row of performances and move on to some activity. We have all been aware of how several places planting saplings and seeds are considered a noble profession. In European countries, in fact, due to the lack of greenery, many people encourage young children to participate in such planting programs. It not only increases our natural wealth but also makes green preservation a good habit among children.

So today for the children of our society we have arranged something similar. All of you will receive a pot filled with soil, a seed, water, and a piece of paper. All you will do is plant the seed into the soil and water it adequately and then write your name on the paper and stick it on your pot. Once the sapling grows it will be returned to you for its care. So come on everyone, let’s do some quick planting.

After the Planting Session (For Both Educational and Non-educational Institutions)

Now tell me everyone did you not enjoy this entire procedure? This has been the happiest experience of my life. Planting a small seed with the wish that it will one day grow into a plant is the biggest satisfaction of life. I hope all of you will enjoy this more once the plants start growing.

For 5th June we organized a drawing competition a month ago with the theme “environment- our protector”. Many children have participated in it and all of them have drawn wonderfully. It was difficult to choose only some of them as winners. But it has to be done. Yet I will say do not be sad because your pictures will be on full display in our gallery for the next week. After that, it will be preserved with us or returned to you if you wish. So now I will declare the winners. The second runner-up is (his/her name), the first runner-up is (his/ her name), and the winner is (his/ her name). Congratulations to all of you.

Ending Speech

Finally, we have arrived at the end of today’s program. It was wonderful to see so many of you participate and gather in the planting session and live by the idea that nature is our life. I wish that those who are here today will definitely take with themselves this moral of taking care of the green. With this note, I wish you all a good day.

Long and Short Speech on Environment in English

Environment speech 1.

Good Morning Principal, Teachers, and My Dear Friends!

As today, the whole school has been assembled here for this beautiful occasion of World Environment Day that is celebrated on 5 th June every year; I would like to say a few words dedicated to the environment.

The environment is the surroundings made from five elements namely- Air, Water, Land, Sky, and Fire for us to flourish. It has been always said that only earth has the most favourable climatic conditions that help us to survive. We should be very grateful towards the earth that we have been provided with such a great environment that has everything in its nature which helps us to thrive. But day by day we are ruining it on the highest pitch that will eventually lead us towards our destruction.

We should understand the importance of the natural environment and try to deduce our non-eco-friendly activities and imperatively plant as many trees as we can and save water that is the two biggest issues.

Thank you and have a nice day!

Environment

Environment Speech 2

Hon’ble Principal, Teachers, and My Dear Friends!

As this special assembly has been called for addressing the biggest issue these days regarding our environment, I would like to express my views on it. It has been recognized by the entire world that our environment is not as it was before. There are drastic changes that have been occurred since few years such as climatic changes, increment in natural disasters, etc all due to our changing lifestyle.

Our environment consists of 5 elements- Air, Water, Land, Fire and Sky and we have disturbed the process of entire ecosystem by cutting the vast amount of trees who contributes the most in balancing the environmental cycle, installment of large polluting industries, hunting/poaching of animals leading towards their endangerment, etc.

Out of this, the question arises is that what kind of future we want or what kind of future we are going to hand over to our next generations? Is this the kind of development we all have dreamt about? Walking with a mask on our faces, struggle in floods and earthquakes, destruction of animals who aren’t even aware of what’s happening around.

Now this is the high time where we need to recognize the importance of our natural environment and try every possible action towards saving it from saving water to planting trees.

Environment Speech 3

Good morning to the Excellencies, my respected teachers and my dear friends. The topic of my speech is Environment. Environment is the surrounding in which we live. It is the source of life. Our whole life is dependent to the environment. It directs our life and determines our proper growth and development.

Good or bad quality of social life depends on the quality of our natural environment. The need of human beings for food, water, shelter and other things depends on the environment around us. There is a balanced natural cycle exists between environment and lives of human beings, plants and animals. Human society is playing vital role in degenerating the natural environment which in turn negatively affects the lives on this planet. All the human actions in this modern world directly impact the whole ecosystem.

All the actions have brought a big change in this planet which resulted in many environmental problems. Increasing demand of technologies and industries in the modern time impacts the nature. The increasing invention of new technologies has changed the interaction of people with environment which permits more population to grow.

The modern technologies have immense power which has altered the whole environment in an unimagined way. The indiscriminate use of environment is the root of ecological crisis. Such continuous increase in the technologies and human behaviour are correspondingly very serious. Such amazing technologies have become the reason of economic growth in 20 th century however it had dramatically affected the natural resources.

Some of the environmental problems are rapid growth in world population, deteriorating natural resources, diminishing forests and wetlands, erosion of soil and coral reefs, depleting underground water, regular shortage of fresh drinking water, vanishing plants, salinization in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Middle East. Some other issues are loss of biodiversity, rapid extinction of some important animal species, collapse of fisheries, rising air and water pollution, rise in atmospheric temperature, thinning of ozone layer, spoiling rivers, seas and underground resources.

Even though science and technology have radically altered the terms of adaptation to the nature, we still need to adapt to the environment. Human society is embedded in an environment. We must not forget that the human being is first and foremost an animal, sharing living space with other animal species in an environment on which they are mutually dependent. It is our responsibility to save our environment and earth and make the possibility of healthy and happy life here.

Environment Speech 4

Good morning to the Excellencies, my respected teachers and my dear friends. As we have gathered here to celebrate this occasion, I would like to speech over Environment. To run the life in healthy happy way, we all need a healthy and natural environment. Continuously increasing human population adversely affects the forests. Human beings are cutting forests to a great extent for making their home to live securely however they do not think of the problems arises due to the lack of forests.

It completely disturbs the natural cycle between environment and life on the earth. Because of the over-population, the number of various chemical elements is increasing in the atmosphere which ultimately causes irregular rainfall and global warming. We cannot imagine the negative effects of global warming over the climate and lives of human beings and other living species.

According to the research it is found that the perennial snow mountains of the Tibet were totally covered by the thick snow in the past however those thick snows are getting very thin day by day over last few decades because of the global warming. Such condition is very dangerous situation and indication of end of life on earth which needs to be taken very seriously by all countries worldwide. It is very true that climate change goes very slow however slow continuous process is very dangerous.

Because of the regular changes in the environment physical structure of the human beings and other living species has been changed from generation to generation. Increasing human population needs more land for agricultural cultivation and living purpose which force them to cut more trees and forests so the deforestation has its own dangerous side effects.

Increasing level of industrialization has countless harmful effects on the atmosphere because of the poisonous chemical emissions and dangerous wastes drainage in the big water resources such as Yamuna, Ganga, and other rivers. The ever changing (negatively) environment is not the issue of only some countries or government; it is the issue of whole human fraternity because we all are the reason of this negatively declining environment so we all are responsible to save our natural environment for the healthy survival of life on the earth.

Protecting the atmosphere is the matter of high importance for all the present and future generations of mankind. The main purpose of my speech today over the environment is only to increase the public awareness among common people about the reasons of declining environment as well as need of healthy and natural environment for the life on earth. So, it is my humble request to all of you that please contribute to save your environment.

Environment Speech 5

Good morning to my respected teachers and my dear friends. As we have gathered here to celebrate this occasion, I would like to speech on the Environment to increase awareness among public about the negatively changing environment. An environment is the natural surrounding which covers and protects us from the natural disasters.

However, our healthy and natural environment is getting worse day by day and taking the form of demon affecting everything from non-living to living beings. What we know is two types of environment called natural environment and built environment. The natural environment is one which exists naturally and the one for which man is responsible such as cities etc is called built environment. There are many natural and unnatural factors polluting the whole natural atmosphere.

Some of the natural factors like volcanoes, flood, etc are the reasons of declining environment. However, manmade reasons are more rampant caused due to the reckless and the caustic human nature are highly responsible for the environmental pollution. Self centred human activities are highly responsible for the destruction of the environment. Other environmental threats like forests degradation, global warming, pollution, etc are the reasons of environment degradation. Continuous increasing temperature of the earth surface in the atmosphere because of the many human made and natural means calls to the various natural calamities causing disturbance to a great extent to the healthy and common life of human and all other living beings.

Our natural environment has become hugely changed in the last few decades and has taken form of big and powerful demon affecting the lives of people every single moment. Nature has made everything to run in balance with the natural cycle however many factors causes environmental corrosion. The factors like population growth and economic advancement are considered as the major factors giving rise to many other secondary factors.

We must understand the importance of ecological balance and try our best to run it naturally in order to prevent the effects of environmental disasters and promote the existence of healthy environment. We should promote common public in our surroundings for the clean and green environment to prove the meaning of proverb like “We won’t have a society if we destroy the environment”.

Environment Speech 6

First of all I would like to say good morning to the Excellencies, respected teachers, and my dear friends. As we all know that we have gathered here to celebrate this auspicious occasion, I would like to speech over the environment in order to make you aware of our continuously declining environment so that we all together can be successful in saving our environment by taking some effective steps. As we know that we live on the planet of earth having different types of surroundings called environment within which we can eat healthy, breathe freshly, and live safely.

However, what happens to our lives if any means of natural or manmade causes of environment degradation takes place, we cannot imagine the extent of loss to the human and other living beings existence. The ecology balance and natural cycles has become disturbed which is very hard to bring back and give it a natural shape. However, there is a common saying that “prevention is better than cure”, so we never gets tired of trying our best to save the environment.

Physical environment on this planet provides all of us a favourable required condition and supports the existence and growth of various forms of life here. Natural or physical environment is provided by the nature however all forms of the living beings together constitute another environment called biological environment. Both of the environments are closely connected to each other and make a unique natural system for the life survival. If the biological environment gets disturbed, physical environment automatically gets disturbed and both hugely affect the human lives together.

Another environment which is completely depending on the human is socio-cultural environment made by the human beings. Whatever environment is, it must be healthy, safe and secure to continue the evergreen life on the earth in present and future.

We should realize our mistakes and concern about the environment in order to keep it clean, safe and secure for the healthy life. Many of the human activities like deforestation, industrialization, technological improvements and so many are leading our environment towards danger and keeping lives at risk by influencing the growth, development and survival of all organisms.

Various types of environmental pollution such as water pollution, air pollution, noise pollution, soil pollution, etc are disturbing the ecosystem and causing variety of health hazards to the human beings and animals. Environmental pollution is damaging the ecosystem and destroying the delicate balance of the natural ecosystem. So, now-a-days environmental pollution is the matter of great concern and consideration for which we all together follow some effective steps and carry on until problems gets solved completely.

Speech on Environment for Students and Children

3 minutes speech on environment.

Good Morning to one and all present here. I am going to present a short speech on Environment. Our environment consists of all living beings as well as their surroundings. A healthy environment is one that is sustainable for a long period of time. It is the source of life for everyone. It directs the life of everyone and determines the proper growth and development.

Speech on environment

The good or bad quality of our life is depending on the quality of our natural environment. Our need for food, water, shelter, and other things depends on the environment around us. There must be a balanced natural cycle that exists between the environment and the lives of human beings, plants, and animals.

Human society is playing a vital role in degenerating the natural environment which is affecting badly the lives on this planet. All the human actions in this modern world directly impact our ecosystem.  Many actions of us have brought big changes to this planet, resulting in many environmental problems. Increasing demand for technologies and industries is another important factor.

Various Environmental Issues

There are many harmful effects of human activities on the environment. Some of these are pollution, over-population, waste disposal, climate change, global warming, and the greenhouse effect, etc. The big reason that poses a serious threat to our environment is the harmful gases in the air.

The uncontrolled use of automobiles has increased their effects, which in turn emits harmful gases like Carbon monoxide. The electronic appliances like air conditioners and refrigerators also contaminating air by the discharge of harmful substances. The diverse effect of these gases is causing air pollution as well as global warming.

Read Speech on Global Warming here.

Deforestation is another major reason. The human population is increasing at a fast rate and therefore to meet their daily consumption we need to cut forests and trees. It may be for home or for fuel, but we are causing great loss to the environment.

Other factors are the depletion of natural resources like water, fuel, and food. On the other hand over-consumption of resources by humans and improper waste disposal have resulted in a huge quantity of solid and hazardous wastes. These wastes are other threats to the environment.

Solutions of the Problems of our Environment

Due to all the above human activities, our planet has reached unsustainable levels. Therefore, it is our duty and responsibility to lower the loss. Every individual can play a significant role in this solution.

For example, we should take a pledge to say ‘No’ to plastics. Instead of it, we may make use of Eco-friendly substitutes like paper and cloth bags.

The government of every country must implement strict laws for industries, those are releasing the toxic wastes for proper waste management. The awareness programs should be organized to encourage citizens to use public transport as much as possible.

Also, everyone must do plantation of trees. The less use of private vehicles will reduce the emission of harmful gases as well will save fuel resources.

In the end, I want to say that we must spread environmental awareness in our society as well as in our daily routine life. It is necessary to save and protect our environment. In my view, it is the responsibility of everyone to do our bit for the environment. Therefore, let us work together towards a greener and more sustainable future.

‘Access to information is the basis of democracy’ – Interview with environmental journalist Miriam Jemio on World Press Freedom Day

On world press freedom day, un women spoke with miriam jemio, an environmental journalist from bolivia, on pressing issues and safety of journalists..

The climate crisis is the most pressing issue of our times, impacting our lives and entire ecosystems. It threatens progress on gender equality, human rights, and sustainable development. By 2050, climate change will push up to 158 million more women and girls into poverty .

Exposing the climate and biodiversity crisis is the first step towards beginning to find solutions. Yet, dis- and misinformation campaigns continue to challenge scientific knowledge and information about the unfolding crisis, clouding people’s understanding and risking our future. Against this backdrop, the freedom and safety of journalists reporting from the front lines of the climate crisis is critical.  This year, World Press Freedom Day (3 May) is focusing on the importance of journalism and freedom of expression in the face of the environmental crisis.

On this occasion, UN Women interviewed Miriam Jemio, an independent environmental journalist from La Paz, Bolivia. Jemio was among 163 Bolivian journalists who received training in design thinking and reporting on gender-based violence through a Media Lab project by UN Women and the Foundation for Journalism in December 2023.

The importance of environmental journalism in the face of dis- and misinformation

Miriam Jemio has been a journalist for nearly three decades. For most of her career, she has almost exclusively covered environmental issues, because she considers them to be as important as political or economic issues.

For Jemio, it is incredibly important to reflect the socio-environmental crises that indigenous and rural women are facing, with empathy and sensitivity. “It is essential to cover indigenous issues, because they are a vulnerable population”, she said. “Two decades ago, I had the opportunity to visit many rural municipalities and when I compare their condition today with what I had seen then, there have been very few changes.”

“Therefore, it is necessary to make their needs visible, to show where the State is not fulfilling its duty, and to show the specific ways that the indigenous peoples face social and environmental problems.”

Jemio reported from COP 15 events in 2009, highlighting the stories of indigenous peoples from the Amazon who were facing the impacts of climate change.

“Coverage of environmental issues is essential in the face of the crises we face as humanity, and to combat the disinformation that preys on the public”, she said. “We have to show who is behind the disinformation, expose their interests, and provide verified information to the public so that they can make informed decisions, and we can protect the planet that houses all of us.”

But there is another challenge that haunts her: “how to motivate our audience to take action. We are now turning to "solutions journalism" to inspire action”, she said.

Miriam Pariamo lives the San José de Uchupiamona community, located inside Madidi National Park, which is currently affected by mining activity. She is photographed by the Tuichi river.

The climate crisis impacts women differently

“Extractivism and the climate crisis have profound socio-environmental impact on indigenous populations, but these impacts affect women differently (than men),” said Jemio. “Women are the ones to face and respond to the effects of climate change, but their role is not understood, much less made visible.”

She gives the example of indigenous women in the Chiquitanía (a region in eastern Bolivia), whose traditional care responsibilities for their families include fetching water. “Water is increasingly scarce, making it more difficult for them to access it. In the Chiquitanía, there are seasons when women have to travel to another community or even to the nearest city to bring water to their homes.”

“And when excessive rainfall causes flooding, women are the first to respond to save their children and animals. In many communities, indigenous women grow kitchen gardens to cover their nutritional needs. When they lose their crops (because of lack of water or during floods) they do not have enough to cook and feed their families.”

The forest of San Jose de Uchupiamona in Bolivia, where an indigenous community lives. Miriam Jemio recently covered a story about mercury contamination in the area due to mining activities.

Safety of journalists and press freedom

“In Bolivia, due to the polarization in the country, several journalists have been verbally and physically attacked in recent years. Environmental journalists are in the crosshairs of the mining actors and journalists are often labeled as being "with" or "against" the government”, shared Jemio.

In 2019, while doing a live broadcast, Jemio was verbally and physically assaulted by a group of protesters. “I felt very vulnerable, it was a mixture of rage and helplessness, because I could not defend myself and I had to flee”, she recalled.

“The security to do our work must be provided by the State”, Jemio stressed. Her message on World Press Freedom Day is clear: “Access to information is the basis of democracy. That is what we are losing if journalists cannot safely cover issues such as the climate crisis, deforestation, biodiversity loss, extractive activities… the public will not have the information they need to take action on issues that affect their lives.”

Remarks by President   Biden to Commemorate Earth Day | Triangle,   VA

Prince William Forest Park Triangle, Virginia

2:54 P.M. EDT

THE PRESIDENT:  Hello, hello, hello.  (Applause.)  Thank you, Za’Nyia, for sharing your story that embodies the spirit of Earth Day.  On this day 54 years ago, with literally toxic rivers burning, air filled with pollution, millions of Americans from every age and background rallied together to stand for our environment and for future generations.  I got to know Senator Gordan Nelson — Gaylord Nelson, excuse me — from Wisconsin when I got to the Senate.  And he organized the first Earth Day.  I later introduced the first climate bill in the United States Senate.  And all these years later, as president, I was able to sign into law the Inflation Reduction Act, the most si- — (applause) — the most significant [climate] investment every anywhere in the history of the world, and we’re just getting started. Earth Day pushed the country forward, leading to Environmental Protection Agency, and we’re fortunate enough to have with us the EPA Administrator Michael Regan.  Where are you, Michael?  (Applause.)  Stand up.  Get up.  Get up. I stole him from Carolina.  We’re not letting him go back.  (Laughter.) And we’re joined by our great Secretary of Interior, Deb Haaland.  (Applause.)  Deb, stand up.  The first Native American ever to serve in a Cabinet.  (Applause.) And AmeriCorps CEO Michael Smith — Michael, where are you?  There y- — (applause) — joined by members of the Congress, including Ed Markey of Massachusetts, who, by the way, thought this was an important idea a long time ago and talked about dealing with the Climate Corps — one — needed one.  Ed, we owe you a lot, pal.  We owe you a lot.  (Applause.) And Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, who understands what beautiful territory looks like up in Vermont and has done everything in his power to protect it.  Bernie, you’re the best.  (Applause.) And Representative Ocasio-Cortez of New York — you know, I learned a long time ago: Listen to that lady.  (Laughter.)  Listen to that lady.  We’re going to talk more about another part of the world too, real quickly. Look, joined by all of you advocates and community leaders, that’s — this is a good day. It’s fitting to be here in Pric- — Prince William Forest Park.  On March 31, 1933, during the Great Depression, President Franklin Delano Roose- — Roosevelt created the the Climate [Civilian] Conservation Corps, which is talked about a little bit, to put Americans to work to conserve our country’s natural resources. Thousands — thousands of young Americans from the Civilian Conservation Corps built this park, providing jobs, recreation, hope, and healing at the time.   We know today we face another kind of existential threat that requires equally bold and clear action.  As President, I’ve seen the devastating toll of climate firsthand.  Since I’ve been president, I’ve flown over all the major fires and the thousands upon thousands of acres that have burned flat by wil- — wildfires — more acres than the entire state of Maryland combined.  I’ve met with families whose homes were wiped off the map by devastating hurricanes, floods, and storms.  Last year was Earth Day’s [the Earth’s] hottest day [year] on record.  And over the last two years, natural disasters and extreme weather in America have caused $270 billion — $270 billion in damages.  And the impacts we’re seeing — decades in the making because of inaction — are only going to get worse, more frequent, ferocious, and costly. But since Kamala and I took office, we’ve been acting.  And today, I’m proud to announce two major steps forward.  The first: Energy costs are among the biggest costs for families to budget, particular poor and middle-income families.  In fact, low-income families can spend up to 30 percent of their paychecks on their energy bills.  It’s outrageous.  To reduce family energy costs for folks with low and moderate incomes today, the Environmental Protection Agency will invest $7 billion from my Inflation Reduction Act in a new program called “Solar for All.”  (Applause.)  It will award grants — 60 grants across the country to states, territories, Tribal governments, municipalities, and nonprofits to develop programs that enable low-income and disadvantaged communities to benefit from residential solar power.  And it’s a big deal.  This new Solar for All program means that 900,000 households — 900,000 will have solar on their rooftops for the first time and soon.  Millions of families will save over $400 a year on utility bills.  And that’s $350 million nationwide.  My dad said it matters what’s there at the end of the — end of the paycheck.  But a month is out, do you have anything left? It means we’ll cut more than 5 million metric tons of carbon pollution annually.  And, folks, Solar for All will give us more breathing room and cleaner breathing room.  It’s going to also create 200,000 good-paying and union jobs over the five — (applause) — over the five years in communities that need them most: fenceline communities.  You know, as I always say, I think about climate — when I think about it, I think not only about health and safety, but I think about jobs.  And that brings me to my second announcement.   Last fall, I talked about a historic new program that my administration is launching, with the help of my colleagues on my right here, called the Cl- — the American Climate Corps.  As I said — and I’m not being solicitous — Ed — Ed Markey talked about that long before — long before. It’s patterned after the Civilian Conservation Corps and the Peace Corps and America Corps [AmeriCorps]. Like them, it brings out the best in young people to do what’s best for America and will put tens of thousands of young people to work at the forefront of our climate resilience and energy future — clean energy future.  Today, I’m proud to announce that Americans across the country can now apply — now apply to become the first members of the American Climate Corps.  We’re recru- — (applause) — we’re recruiting for over 2,000 positions in 36 states to start with — in Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, with many on the way.  Just go to ClimateCorps — as mentioned already, ClimateCorps.gov to apply.  You’ll get paid to fight climate change, learning how to install those solar panels, fight wildfires, rebuild wetlands, weatherize homes, and so much more that’s going to protect the environment and build a clean energy economy.  To ensure a pathway to good union jobs and careers, you’ll have access to pre-apprenticeship training through a new partnership we’re announcing today with the North American Building Trade Unions [Trades Union]. And when y- — (applause) — As you may remember, when I announced in 2020, I initially didn’t announce my climate position until I talked to the unions, because unions were all ag- — they thought climate cost them jobs.  Well, guess what?  IBEW stepped up, and they all stepped up, and now our strongest support comes from union members.  (Applause.) When you finish your service — when you finish your term of service, you’ll also be eligible for a streamlined path to federal government jobs related to climate and clean energy.   We’re also announcing a new collaboration with Bloomberg Philanthropies that puts American Climate Corps members in energy communities — like former coalmining communities, power plant communities — that have powered our nation but have been fenceline communities that have hurt very badly for generations.  Today — today’s announcement builds upon an unprecedented and historic action we’ve already taken to tackle the climate crisis, deliver environmental justice, and build a clean energy future.  Just look at the last few weeks alone.  To ensure clean energy [air], we issued new standards for chemical plants that emit toxic pollution.  Now, (inaudible). And because of the Clean Air Act, we’re going to reduce the number of people at risk for cancer in fenceline communities who have been smothered for decades by pollution by 96 percent, according to the studies.   And by the way, parenthetically, you know, my state of Delaware, which everybody thinks is a wealthy state — I lived in a place called Claymont, Delaware.  It’s in that arc that goes up into Philadelphia — into Pennsylvania and to the Delaware River.  More — more energy plants, more oil refin- — refineries than anywhere, including Houston, Texas.  And I lived in just — literally, the school I went to was literally a quarter mile from that border. And the prevailing winds were southeast, where we lived.  So, there was never any incentive for the Pennsylvanians to move to do something, but it affected Delaware.  And we had the highest cancer rate in the 1970s of any nation — any state in the nation.  And guess what?  A lot of us from — me included, ended up with bronchial asthma and many other diseases.  Fenceline communities are the ones we have to help first, because they’ve been taking the brunt of all this. To ensure clean drinking water, we issued the first-ever national drinking water standard that’ll protect people from exposure to harmful substances known as “forever chemicals.”  And after 30 years of inadequate protections, we finally are going to put a ban on asbestos, which we know causes cancer.  (Applause.)   It’s all part of a plan to reassert America’s climate leadership. We rejoined the Paris Agreement and sparked a domestic clean energy manufacturing boom, providing incentives for 80,000 farmers to implement climate-smart agricultural practice.  So, plant what absorbs carbon from the air and get them — pay them for doing it.    We’ve quadrupled the number of electric vehicles sold, and 11,000 dealerships have now signed up to sell more. We’re modernizing our infrastructure with better roads and highways and energy grids and more so they can withstand and recover from extreme weather.  Already underway, we’re replacing every single lead pipe in America so everyone can turn on a faucet, home or at school, and drink clean water that doesn’t contain lead.  (Applause.) We’re also reduting [reducing] flood risk for communities, improving drought re- — resilience, and conserving 41 million acres of our most precious and sacred lands and water.

I committed that I’m going to try to reserve — take — of all non-developed land and waters, we’re going to take 30 percent of it by 2030 and make sure it is conserved, period.  We’re well on our way.  (Applause.) We’ve already attracted nearly $700 billion in private sector investments in advanced manufacturing and clean energy, creating tens of thousands of jobs here in America.  And all across the board, we’re lifting up communities and workers too often left out in urban, rural, suburban, Tribal communities all across the country. But, folks, despite the overwhelming devastation in red and blue states, there are still those who deny climate is in crisis.  Our MAGA Republican friends don’t seem to think it’s in crisis.  They don’t — they don’t want our — they actually want to repeal the Inflation Reduction Act, which provides the funding for a vast majority of these projects, and roll back clean air — protections for clean air and clean water.  And y- — I’m not going to go into it now, but you — I’m not making it up.  It’s real.  Just listen to what they say.

Anyone in or out of government who willfully denies the impacts of climate change is condemning the American people to a very dangerous future — and the world, I might add.  They want to take us backwards, sideline our workers, let China and others lead the race for clean energy.  I’m determined — absolutely determined — that we move forward — we move forward.  (Applause.) Let me close with this.  In 1933 — and it was referenced by the congresslady — that when Roosevelt outlined the Civilian Conservation Corps, he said, quote — and I’m quoting — “More important than the material gains will be the moral and spiritual value of such work.”  He always put it in the context that went beyond just what the immediate need was.

I’d say the same holds true for what we’re doing here today.  It has a moral imperative.  And I’ve never been more optimistic about America’s future.  We just have to remember who we are.  We’re the United States of America.  And there is nothing — nothing beyond our capacity if we work together.  (Applause.)  And so, happy Earth Day, folks.  (Applause.)  And God bless you all.  And may God protect our troops. We’re going to get this done, I promise you, come hell or high water.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.  (Applause.)

Come on up.

All right, guys.  Let’s get this done.  Okay?  (Applause.)  All right.

God bless you all.  Thank you, thank you, thank you.  (Applause.)
