4 Entrepreneur Success Stories to Learn From

successful entrepreneur talking on phone

 • 20 Jan 2022

Entrepreneurship is a risky but potentially rewarding endeavor. According to the online course Entrepreneurship Essentials , 50 percent of startups last five years, and just 25 percent survive 15.

“For every Amazon.com or Uber, there are scores of companies few can remember,” says Harvard Business School Professor William Sahlman in Entrepreneurship Essentials.

So, what separates successful ventures from those that fail?

“When a company succeeds, it’s because it has discovered and made the right moves along the way,” Sahlman says. “It has found out how to create and capture customer value.”

If you’re exploring entrepreneurship or in the early stages of launching a venture, it’s important to learn from others to avoid common pitfalls and discover which decisions impacted a company’s survival. Here are four stories of successful entrepreneurs to inspire your entrepreneurial journey.

Access your free e-book today.

4 Successful Entrepreneur Stories

1. adi dassler of adidas.

Some of today’s biggest brands started with humble beginnings, and no one embodies this better than Adidas founder Adolf “Adi” Dassler.

Dassler’s shoemaking career began in his mother’s washroom in a small town in Bavaria, Germany. It was there that Dassler began designing and cobbling shoes and decided he wanted to make the best possible sports shoe for athletes.

While there were plenty of shoemakers at the time, Dassler was committed to standing out in the market by gathering feedback from athletes about what they looked for in a shoe, what pain points could be improved on, and how they felt about his early models.

This feedback allowed Dassler to craft an athletic shoe that was highly valued by his customers and gave him legitimacy when he registered “Adi Dassler Adidas Sportschuhfabrik” in 1949 at 49 years old. It was that same year the first shoe with the soon-to-become-signature Adidas three stripes was registered.

Dassler’s vision to create the best shoe for athletes proved itself in 1954 when the German national football team won the World Cup final against the Hungarians—while wearing the new model of Adidas cleats.

“Their unbelievable victory would be heard around the world for decades to come,” Adidas states on its website , “and it made Adidas and its founder a household name on football pitches everywhere.”

Since then, Adidas has grown into an international brand known for high-quality athleticwear. Dassler’s story sheds light on the importance of listening to target customers about their dreams, needs, and pain points.

“Adi Dassler’s secret to success had an additional personal ingredient: He met with athletes, listened carefully to what they said, and constantly observed what can be improved or even invented to support their needs,” reads Adidas’s website . “The best of the best trusted Adidas and its founder from the beginning.”

2. Whitney Wolfe Herd of Bumble

After leaving dating app company Tinder and an abusive relationship in 2014, Whitney Wolfe Herd was inspired to create an empowering dating experience for women.

“For all the advances women had been making in workplaces and corridors of power, the gender dynamics of dating and romance still seemed so outdated,” Wolfe Herd writes on Bumble’s website . “I thought, ‘What if I could flip that on its head? What if women made the first move and sent the first message?’”

Wolfe Herd, along with dating app Badoo co-founder Andrey Andreev and former Tinder employees Chris Gulzcynski and Sarah Mick, designed a dating app that requires women to make the first move in heterosexual matches.

The brand took off—largely on college campuses—and the app reached 100,000 downloads in its first month.

As its user base grows, Wolfe Herd remains a strong advocate for gender equality and sexual harassment prevention, building in-app features that block hate speech and blur inappropriate images. Wolfe Herd and her team also lobbied the state of Texas—where the company is headquartered—to pass a law prohibiting the sending of unsolicited lewd photos, which passed in 2019 .

“I’m more dedicated than ever to helping advance gender equality—and putting an end to the misogyny that still plagues society,” Wolfe Herd writes in a letter to Bumble users . She later adds, “I want nothing more than for your connections to be both meaningful and healthy.”

Wolfe Herd’s story serves as a reminder to use your own life for business inspiration and use a cause you care about to differentiate your product and brand in a saturated market.

3. Melanie Perkins of Canva

In 2007, Melanie Perkins was working a part-time job while studying in Perth, Australia, teaching students how to use desktop design software. The software was expensive, complex, and required a semester’s worth of instruction to learn how to use, prompting Perkins to ask, “Is there a way this could be simpler and less expensive?”

Perkins’s goal to create an affordable, simple, online design tool was originally turned down by over 100 investors—it wasn’t until three years into her pitching process that Canva received its first investment.

Perkins credits this investment to a shift in her pitching strategy: She began leading with the relatable problem Canva aims to solve.

“A lot of people can relate to going into something like Photoshop and being completely overwhelmed," Perkins said in an interview for Inc . "It's important to tell the story, because if your audience doesn't understand the problem, they won't understand the solution."

Today, 60 million customers use Canva to create designs across 190 countries.

Perkins’s story reflects the importance of effectively communicating the value of a business idea , as well as the tenacity and resilience required for entrepreneurial success.

4. Neil Blumenthal, Dave Gilboa, Andy Hunt, and Jeff Raider of Warby Parker

One example mentioned in Entrepreneurship Essentials is that of innovative online eyewear company Warby Parker. In 2008, Wharton MBA student Blumenthal lost his prescription eyeglasses. He was reluctant to purchase a new pair because they were so expensive. He also didn’t want to visit an eyeglass store.

The idea came to him in the middle of the night, and he emailed three friends—Gilboa, Hunt, and Raider—immediately: Why not start an online company to sell prescription glasses at an affordable price?

They set to work, and Warby Parker was poised to launch just after the four founders graduated with their MBA degrees in the spring of 2010—that is, until GQ reached out to Blumenthal about writing an article to be published on February 15 of that year. The founders sped up their process and launched Warby Parker’s website the same day the article was printed .

The article called Warby Parker “the Netflix of eyewear,” driving interested customers to the new site in droves. The founders’ one mistake was forgetting to add a “sold out” functionality to the website. The waitlist for Warby Parker eyewear grew to 20,000 people, and the company hit its first-year sales target in three weeks.

"It was this moment of panic but also a great opportunity for us to provide awesome customer service and write personalized emails to apologize and explain," Blumenthal says in an interview for Inc . "That really set the tone for how we would run customer service."

A few things set Warby Parker apart from the eyewear market at the time:

 • Its online model : A new way of delivering the product helped it break into a stagnant industry
 • Its affordable prices : A pair of Warby Parker frames with prescription lenses cost $95—much less expensive than other brands at the time
 • Its home try-on program : This enabled customers to try on five pairs of glasses and send back the pairs they didn’t want to purchase.
 • Its commitment to giving back : For every pair of glasses purchased, Warby Parker donated a pair to someone in need

Warby Parker donated its millionth pair of glasses in 2019 and continues to be an example of innovation in an existing market.

In recent years the case study methodology has been used much more in conducting research on firms. This increase is due to the needs and requirements, and to the perception that the results obtained by using such a methodology are of superior quality. The growing acceptance of case studies has been impelled by a wider knowledge and discussion of the criteria for assessing quality of case studies, and this has led to a better understanding of how the inclusion of case studies can be used to resolve certain problems connected to the study of organizations, in particular small and medium sized businesses. The present work proposes a design for conducting research suitable for writing a postgraduate dissertation on the subject of small and medium sized businesses. The methodology fulfills the conditions of quality required in a project conducted through the use of case studies. and that it is possible to complete within a limited period of time, thus improving the rate of students who graduate after completing their studies.

Despite having a relatively recent history compared to other social sciences, the business and management field has proliferated into a number of largely independent disciplines. These include: accounting; corporate governance; entrepreneurship; finance; human resource management; international business and international management; leadership; management and business history; marketing and retail; operations and logistics; organizational behaviour; public management and governance; and strategy. Each of these disciplines has its own methodological predilections and as a corollary, a view of what constitutes a case study, where case studies should feature in a research project and the relative usefulness of case study research. Given this breadth of disciplines, only a provisional definition of a case study will be provided at this point; namely, a case study is research into a phenomenon, organization, process, or event that is studied as a unit of analysis that is interesting in its own right. Rather than attempting to summarise all that has been written about case studies across the management disciplines, this entry will elaborate upon thinking around this definition using the metaphor of a kaleidoscope.

Entrepreneurship is imperative for growing economies in times of environmental uncer¬tainties. Pakistani mentality is undergoing a change and more and more educated people are looking at business of their own rather than a "naukri'. This bold initiative by a few is likely to motivate young budding professionals to follow suit. Entrepreneurship is all about identifying a business opportunity and adding color to it to sound compelling. Idea has replaced finances as an engine to entrepreneurial spirit. Another factor that stands out is the ability of making calculated risks and being persistent in your struggle. Entrepreneurial character also helps in making you successful. The need of time is to allow small and medium enterprises SME to grow disproportionately to double the GDP growth of the country". This is a story of five entrepreneurs who surmounted the odds and build their enterprise into successful businesses.

Who is this big burly man? • Born in Detroit in 1953 (58 years old today) • Considered to be in lower middle class • Starting working part-time since 12 years old • By 16 years old, he could buy a car! • Dropped out of uni as he had learnt all there is to learn

Who is this big burly man? • Working experience includes jewellery, factory and ski lodge ops and oil industry engineering • Lived across US, Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar, Indonesia and finally Singapore (in 1990)

Bernie’s – Rise & Fall • Opened pub restaurant at Changi Gardens in 1996 • Opened Bernie’s BFD at East Coast Park later on • Bernie made $325k after 3 years • Opened Bernie Goes To Town in Boat Quay in 1999 with start-up capital of $500k • In 1 year, BGTT had to close down • Bernie lost $200k

Botak Jones is born • First Botak Jones started in Tuas in 2003, with initial investment of $10,000 • “Botak” = Bernie is botak; “Jones” = common American name • Bernie noticed that there was no good western (American) food in Tuas • There was a good sizeable potential market

Botak Jones is born • Business did not pick up immediately as it wasn’t easy to change S’poreans’ main staple of rice and noodles • Bernie stuck it through as he knew his food was good • He gave free samples • Wrote to newspapers to seek coverage. His hook – an ‘ang moh’ selling American food in a kopitiam – it worked! • People travelled from beyond Tuas to eat at BJ!

Botak Jones Today • Botak Jones is under Great Big Food Pte Ltd • 51% owned by Bernie and his wife, Zee • 11 outlets islandwide • Catering service • Office and 5,000 sq ft central kitchen in Defu Lane

Company Mission • To provide well-made restaurant quality food and service in industrial and heartland residential areas where it hasn’t been available before.

Future of Botak Jones • Bernie is still passionate about Botak Jones. • Always looking for new ideas to expand. • They have plans to franchise their business in Malaysia, Indonesia, Korea and China.

Bernie’s business approach Be Passionate • Feel passionate about what you do! • For every business move you take, put your heart in it and give your best. • Eg. The Tale of the Aye Carumba! Sandwich • It is difficult to hire people who are willing to work in coffeeshops, even if the pay is higher • Very tall order to find staff who care about what they do • Bernie finds that it is easier to train staff with no prior skills or knowledge, but has the passion to want to do things right.

Bernie’s business approach Good Service • “How you want to be treated, is what your customers expect you to treat them.” • “Treat everyone as a human being until they give you reason not to” • “If you screw up, the onus is on you to make up. It is also to punish ourselves to prove that we are sincere”. • “Never say ‘no’ to a customer” – things are always workable so long as there is an opportunity to talk things through. • Eg. Catering gone terribly wrong

Bernie’s business approach Let Go • As business grows bigger, you will have to rely on others to help you • Giving the authority to others means that Bernie has to learn to trust them to do their jobs to the best of their abilities. • He has got to think twice about visiting an outlet. If he ever does, he will be mindful to correct staff through the respective levels of management, and not do it on his own.

Bernie’s business approach My rules may not be others’ • [Back to Bernie’s] Bernie was more hands-off to the daily business operations, as compared to the earlier two outlets. • The likely causes of the failure were pilferage, expensive acts and insufficient crowds. • To run a successful business, you have to understand the system, not assume everyone share the same values as you, and be prepared. • Analogy: Don a suit in Africa? Be armed with a gun

On Entrepreneurship • Entrepreneurs are very impatient people. They see ideas and can’t wait to act on them. They are not afraid to take up the challenge and bear the risks. They will not be able to live a full life, unless they try. • Entrepreneurs just know it. They have very good intuition or gut feel. They are able to do a quick SWOT analysis, without whipping out the calculator and calculating profits. However, a proper financial model is good to have as a final check.

On Entrepreneurship • Entrepreneurs might not be able to run a business, but they can definitely make a business. They are strategists. They create ideas. • The better you surround yourself with capable persons; the better you will be in the running of your business. • Entrepreneurs see products and services as the all-important factor in a business. They care about what they are doing – put a face to every burger you make.

All that talking made us hungry!

The end Any questions?

HTML EMBED:

The national conversation about immigration is focused on the U.S. southern border . Yet a strong consensus has emerged — among economists at least — that the influx of immigrants is a major reason why the U.S. can sustain strong payroll growth even as inflation pressure eases.

Less understood is the role immigrants also play in starting new businesses and making new hires for those businesses . Marketplace’s senior economics contributor Chris Farrell has been looking at the data. He spoke with “Marketplace Morning Report” host David Brancaccio. The following is an edited transcript of their conversation.

David Brancaccio: New businesses that may have the capacity to hire others — what do you see?

Chris Farrell: So, let’s take the results of recent surveys by Gusto. It’s a payroll, benefits, human resources technology provider for small businesses. And they surveyed business owners on its platform and found that 40% of new business owners in 2023, last year, were either immigrants or the children of immigrants.

Brancaccio: Interesting, but it’s one survey. What does broader economic research have to say about people who come from other countries being, what, more likely to start a business?

Farrell: They are, and, boy, it’s by a wide margin. And that’s the conclusion of a study by four economists . Now what they found, David, is, per capita, immigrants are about 80% more likely to create a firm compared to a U.S.-born citizen.

Brancaccio: Are these mostly, what, small firms?

Farrell: Immigrants not only create more firms overall, but, on average, they create more small firms, more medium-sized businesses and more large firms. And I want to add that well-educated immigrants, they rightly get a lot of focus when it comes to new business creation. I mean, think Silicon Valley. But in a recent conversation I had with Giovanni Peri — he’s an economist and immigration expert at the University of California, Davis — he stressed that less-educated immigrants are also very entrepreneurial.

Brancaccio: And this entrepreneurial activity, what does it do to overall employment in the U.S.? Because, that’s a key concern — immigrants taking jobs from people who were born here.

Farrell: I mean, look, we know that job growth disproportionately comes from new small businesses. Immigrant entrepreneurs in the U.S. are associated with a net gain in jobs. Specifically, they’re responsible for roughly one in four of all jobs in young firms . So, as the study about immigrant entrepreneurs put it, immigrant business owners are more “‘job creators’ than ‘job takers.'”

Brancaccio: Now, swirling across all of this more generally is a remarkable resurgence as we came out of the worst part of pandemic in entrepreneurship.

Farrell: Americans filed 5.5 million applications to start new businesses in 2023. And nearly 1.8 million are highly likely to hire employees. And this is according to estimates by the Economic Innovation Group, which is a think tank. Now, both figures represent high points for this data. Of course, we don’t know how many of these business applications are from immigrants and how many plans will turn into a real business. But I think it’s safe to say immigrants are well represented in the numbers. Immigrant entrepreneurs are vital to both future business creation and future job creation.
