பகாசூரன் Review: ஆக்கமும் தாக்கமும் எப்படி?

அறிவியலின் ஆகச்சிறந்த கண்டுபிடிப்பான செல்ஃபோனும் அதிலுள்ள டேட்டிங் செயலிகளும் இளம் தலைமுறையினரை, குறிப்பாக பெண்களை எப்படியெல்லாம் சீரழிக்கின்றன என்பதை ‘எப்புர்றா’ பாணியில் சொல்ல முயன்றிருக்கும் படம்தான் ‘பகாசூரன்’.

முன்னாள் ராணுவ அதிகாரியான அருள்வர்மன் (நட்டி நட்ராஜ்) நாட்டுக்கு சேவை செய்து களைத்த கையுடன் யூடியூப் சேனல் ஒன்றை தொடங்கி குற்றங்களையும் அதன் பின்னணிகளையும் வீடியோக்களாக்கி வியூஸ்களை குவிக்கிறார். அப்படியான ஒரு குற்றச் சம்பவம் குறித்து அவர் வீடியோ ஒன்றில் பேசிக்கொண்டிருக்கும்போது, அவரது அண்ணன் மகள் தன் உயிரை மாய்த்துக் கொண்டதாக செய்தி வர, சம்பவ இடத்திற்கு ஓடுகிறார். அவரது மரணத்தில் சந்தேகம் எழ குற்றவாளிகளை கண்டுபிடிக்கும் முனைப்பில் விசாரணையில் இறங்குகிறார் அருள்வர்மன்.

அதற்கு அப்படியே மறுபுறம் ‘என் அப்பனல்லவா’ என பாட்டு பாடிக்கொண்டு அறிமுகமாகும் பீமராசு (செல்வராகவன்) தீவிர சிவன் பக்தன். தீரா கொலைவெறியுடன் தேடித்தேடி சிலரை கொலைசெய்து தன் ஆத்திரத்தை தீர்த்துகொள்ளும் அவரிடம் சொல்லமுடியா சோகம் ஒளிந்திருக்கிறது. அவர் தேடிக்கொள்ளும் நபர்கள் யார்? அதற்கு பின்னால் இருக்கும் காரணம் என்ன? அருள் வர்மனின் அண்ணன் மகள் தற்கொலையை தூண்டியது யார்? - இந்தக் கேள்விகளுக்கு விடை சொல்லும் படம் தான் ‘பகாசூரன்’.

‘ஆன்ட்ராய்டு மொபைலும், அதிலிருக்கும் டேட்டிங் ஆப்களும் ஆபத்தானவை’ என்பதைச் சொல்லி இளம் பிள்ளைகளிடம் விழிப்புணர்வை ஏற்படுத்திவிடவேண்டும் என்கிற இயக்குநர் மோகன்.ஜியின் உன்னத முயற்சியை படம் புரிய வைக்கிறது. படத்தின் ஆரம்பத்தில் நடக்கும் கொலைகள், நட்டியின் இன்டலிஜன்ஸை காட்ட வைக்கப்பட்ட காட்சிகள் ஒருபுறமும், மறுபுறம் ‘மேங்கோ கால் டாக்ஸி’, கல்வித் தந்தை பட்டம் கொண்ட அரசியல்வாதி, கதைக்களமாக பெரம்பலூரை பயன்படுத்திக்கொண்டது என அரசியல் குறியீடுகளுக்கு இந்தப் படத்திலும் இயக்குநர் எந்த குறையும் வைக்கவில்லை.

தொடக்கத்தில் விறுவிறுப்பாக செல்லும் படம் ஒரு கட்டத்திற்கு பிறகு அதன் லாஜிக் மீறல்களால் வேகத்தை இழக்கிறது. இரண்டு மாணவிகளின் தற்கொலையை மையப்படுத்தி எழுப்பப்பட்டிருக்கும் கதையில், அவர்கள் தங்களை மாய்த்துக் கொண்டதற்கான காரணங்கள் வலுவிழந்திருப்பதால் ஒட்டமுடியவில்லை. அதனால் எமோஷனல் காட்சிகள் பெரிதாக கைகொடுக்கவில்லை.

போலவே, படத்தில் வரும் சண்டைக்காட்சிகளில் படு செயற்கைத்தனம். படத்தின் முதல் பாதியில் டேட்டிங் ஆப்கள் தான் பிரச்சினைகளுக்கு காரணம் என கூறிவிட்டு, மையக்கருவான இரண்டாம் பாதியில் அதைப்பற்றி பேசாமல் மற்றொரு பிரச்சினையை கையிலெடுத்திருப்பதன் மூலம் படத்தின் நோக்கம் தெளிவில்லாமல் காற்றில் ஆடும் படகு போல இங்கும் அங்கும் அசைந்தாடுகிறது.

சுவாரஸ்யமின்றி எளிதாக நடக்கும் விசாரணைகள், மகாரபாரதத்தில் வரும் வதங்களை ரெஃபரன்சாக்கி,‘அந்நியன்’ பட கும்பிபாக காட்சிகளை நினைவூட்டியது, இழுத்துச் செல்லப்பட்டட்டட்ட இரண்டாம் பாதி அயற்சி. ‘சென்னை பாண்டிச்சேரிலாம் வேண்டாம்மா. அங்கலாம் வெள்ளைக்காரங்க மாதிரி ஆகிட்டாங்க மா. பெரம்பலூர்லனா படி மா…’ என்ற வசனம் மூலம் இயக்குநர் நிறுவ முயல்வது என்ன?

எமோஷனல் காட்சி ஒன்றில் உடைந்து அழும் செல்வராகவன் நடிப்பில் நம்மையும் கலங்க வைத்துவிடுகிறார். கொலை வெறிக்காட்சிகளில் ‘சாணிக்காயிதம்’ செல்வா சார் சாயலிருந்தாலும் கதாபாத்திரத்திற்கு பொருந்தி போகிறார். நட்டி நட்ராஜ் நடிப்புக்கு தீனி போடும் கதாபாத்திரம் இல்லை என்றாலும் கொடுத்த வேலையை செய்திருக்கிறார். ஆனால், அவர் கதாபாத்திரம் இல்லாவிட்டாலும் கதைக்கு எந்த பாதிப்பும் ஏற்படாது என்ற உண்மையை படம் முடிந்த பிறகே உணர முடிகிறது.

தவிர, ராதாரவி, தாரக்ஸி, கே.ராஜன்,கூல் சுரேஷ்,சசிலயா தேவையான பங்களிப்பை செலுத்துகின்றனர். ‘என்னப்பன் அல்லவா’ பாடலில் திரையரங்கை அதிர வைக்கிறார் சாம்.சி.எஸ். பின்னணி இசை மூலம் செல்வராகனுக்கான ‘டெரர்’ லுக்கை ஒருபடி கூட்டியிருக்கிறார். மற்ற பாடல்கள் எதுவும் பெரிய அளவில் கவனம் ஈர்க்கவில்லை. ஃபருக் ஜே பாட்ஷா ஒளிப்பதிவில் காட்சிகள் படத்தின் தரத்தை கூட்ட உதவியிருக்கின்றன. மோகன்.ஜியின் முந்தைய படங்களைக் காட்டிலும் இந்தப் படத்தில் தொழில்நுட்பத்தின் வலு கூடியிருக்கிறது.

பெண்களைப் பாதுகாப்பது குறித்து வகுப்பெடுக்கும் படத்தில் ஆபாச நடனம் வைக்கப்பட்டதற்கான காரணம் தெரியவில்லை. தவிர, பெண்களுக்கான விழிப்புணர்வு குறித்து பேசுவதாக சொல்லும் படத்தின் ஓரிடத்தில், ஆபாச வீடியோவுக்கு எதிராக காவல் நிலையம் செல்ல தயங்கும் செல்வராகவன், ‘இது கௌரவப் பிரச்சினை, வீடியோ வெளியே விட்டா நமக்கு தான் அவமானம்’ என பிற்போக்கு வசனங்களை உதிர்த்து எதிராளிக்கு எனர்ஜி கொடுத்து உற்சாகப்படுத்துகிறார்.

‘அனல் மேலே பனித்துளி’ போன்ற படங்கள் இதனை உடைத்து குற்றவாளிகளை கூண்டில் ஏற்றுவதை நோக்கமாக கொண்டிருக்கும் வேளையில் ‘பெண்களுக்கான விழிப்புணர்வு’ படமான ‘பகாசூரன்’ செய்வது நியாயமாரே..? தொடர்ந்து படம் கல்லூரியில் நடக்கும் பாலியல் தொந்தரவுக்கும், ஆபாச வீடியோவை வைத்து ப்ளாக் மெயில் செய்வதற்கும், டேட்டிங் அப்லிகேஷன் உள்ளிட்டவற்றிற்கு எல்லாம் காரணம் ஆன்ட்ராய்டு போன்களின் வருகையே என குறிப்பிட்டு, அதை பயன்படுத்துவது ஆபத்தானது, பெற்றோர்கள் பிள்ளைகளை கண்காணிக்க வேண்டும் என்பதை தீர்வாக முன்வைப்பது விவாதத்திற்குரியது.

மொத்தத்தில் எதிர்பார்ப்புடன் தொடங்கும் ‘பகாசூரன்’ படத்தின் முதல் பாதி அடுத்தடுத்த தர்க்கப் பிழைகளாலும், பழமைவாதத்தாலும், எடுத்துக்கொண்ட கருத்தில் தடுமாற்றத்தை நிகழ்த்தியதன் மூலம் படம் எதிரிகளை வதம் செய்யவில்லை.. மாறாக....

திரெளபதி படத்தின் மூலம் பரபரப்பாக பேசப்பட்டவர் இயக்குனர் மோகன் ஜி. அவர் இயக்கத்தில் இன்று வெளியாகி இருக்கும் திரைப்படம் பகாசூரன். இப்படத்தில் இயக்குனர் செல்வராகவன் நாயகனாக நடித்துள்ளார். நட்டி நட்ராஜ், ராதாரவி, கே.ராஜன், மன்சூர் அலிகான், கூல் சுரேஷ் என மிகப்பெரிய நட்சத்திர பட்டாளமே நடித்துள்ள இப்படத்திற்கு சாம் சி.எஸ். இசையமைத்து உள்ளார்.

பரபரப்புக்கு பஞ்சமில்லாத கதையுடன் களமிறங்கும் இயக்குனர் மோகன் ஜி. இந்த படத்திலும் செல்போனால் வரும் பிரச்சனை பற்றி பேசி இருக்கிறார் மோகன் ஜி. தனுஷின் வாத்தி படத்துக்கு போட்டியாக அவரின் அண்ணன் செல்வராகவன் நடித்துள்ள பகாசூரன் படம் ரிலீஸ் ஆகி உள்ளது. இப்படத்தின் டுவிட்டர் விமர்சனத்தை தற்போது பார்க்கலாம்.

பகாசூரன் படம் பார்த்த நெட்டிசன் பதிவிட்டுள்ளதாவது : “பகாசூரன் படத்தில் செல்வராகவனின் நடிப்பு வெறித்தனமாக இருந்தது. நட்டி நட்ராஜும் சிறந்த நடிப்பை வெளிப்படுத்தி உள்ளார். சாம் சி.எஸ். பின்னணி இசை தெறிக்க விடுது. மோகன் ஜி-யின் மேக்கிங்கும், கதையும் வேறலெவல்.  ஒவ்வொரு பெற்றோரும் பார்க்க வேண்டிய படம்” என குறிப்பிட்டுள்ளார்.

மற்றொரு நெட்டிசன் போட்டுள்ள டுவிட்டில், “உண்மையில் ஒரு சிறந்த படம். ஒவ்வொரு பெற்றோரும் கண்டிப்பாக இந்தப் படத்தைப் பார்க்க வேண்டும் என்று கேட்டுக்கொள்கிறேன். குறிப்பாக மகள்கள் உள்ளவர்களுக்கு.ஒரு அசிங்கமான வசனம் கூட இல்லாத படம். மற்ற இயக்குனர்கள் இவரை போலவே படம் எடுத்தால் நன்றாக இருக்கும்” என பாராட்டி உள்ளார்.

படம் பார்த்த நெட்டிசன் போட்டுள்ள டுவிட்டில், “பகாசூரன் முற்றிலும் ஈர்க்கும் படமாகவே உள்ளது. மோகன் ஜி-யின் முந்தைய படங்களில் இருந்து இது வித்தியாசமாக உள்ளது. இந்த சமூகத்திற்கு தேவையான, அழுத்தமான மெசேஜும் படத்தின் இறுதியில் உள்ளது. செல்வராகவன் மற்றும் நட்டி நட்ராஜின் நடிப்பு அருமை” என குறிப்பிட்டுள்ளார்.

மகாபாரதத்தில் பகாசூரனை பீம சேனன் ஒழித்தது போல இந்த படத்தில் பீம சேனனாக வரும் செல்வராகவன் எந்த பகாசூரனை ஒழிக்கிறார் என்கிற கதையுடன் வெளியாகி உள்ள பகாசூரன் படத்தின் முழு விமர்சனத்தை இங்கே பார்ப்போம்..

யார் பகாசூரன்

செல்போனால் என்ன எல்லாம் பிரச்சனைகள் வருகின்றன என்பதை கடந்த ஆண்டு வெளியான லவ் டுடே படம் காமெடியாக சொன்ன நிலையில், அந்த செல்போன் தான் பகாசூரனே என க்ரைம் த்ரில்லராக சொல்லி உள்ள படம் தான் இந்த பகாசூரன். ஆன்லைன் மூலம் இளம் பெண்களும், இளைஞர்களும் எப்படி தவறான வழிகளுக்கு செல்கின்றனர் என்றும் காதல் வலை வீசி இளம் பெண்களை எப்படி சிக்க வைக்கின்றனர் என பகாசூரன் படத்தின் மூலம் சொல்லி இருக்கிறார் இயக்குநர் மோகன் ஜி.

செல்வராகவன் நடிப்பு சிறப்பு

சாணிக் காயிதம், பீஸ்ட், நானே வருவேன் என கடந்த ஆண்டு நடிகர் அவதாரம் எடுத்த செல்வராகவன் முதல் முறையாக இந்த படத்தின் மூலம் ஹீரோவாகி உள்ளார். செல்வராகவன் தனது மகளை பறிகொடுத்து விட்டு அதற்கு பழி வாங்க கொலைகள் செய்யும் போது அவர் கொடுக்கும் ரியாக்‌ஷன் மற்றும் அப்பாவியாக கிராமத்தில் இருந்த போது அவரது நடிப்பு என வெரைட்டி காட்டி நடித்து கலக்கி உள்ளார்.

நட்டி நட்ராஜ்

ஓய்வு பெற்ற ராணுவ வீரராக வரும் நட்டி நட்ராஜ் செல்வராகவன் செய்யும் கொலைகளை கண்டுபிடிக்கும் நபராக நடித்து தனக்கு கொடுத்த போர்ஷனை கச்சிதமாக செய்துள்ளார். ஆனால், இத்தனை கொலைகள் நடக்கும் கதையில் போலீசுக்கான வேலை காணாமல் போவது தான் கேள்வியை எழுப்புகிறது.

பகாசூரனின் பலம்

உங்க குழந்தைங்க என்ன போனில் பார்க்கிறாங்க, யாருடன் பேசுறாங்க என்பதை கண்காணிக்க வேண்டும் என்கிற கருத்தை சொல்ல இப்படி ஒரு படத்தை இயக்கி இருக்கிறார் இயக்குநர் மோகன் ஜி. நடிகர்கள் தேர்வு, படத்தின் மேக்கிங் என முந்தைய படங்களை விட இந்த படத்தில் அவரது உழைப்பு அதிகரித்துள்ளது தெரிகிறது. இளைஞர்கள் தவறான பாதையில் செல்வதை தடுக்க வேண்டும் என்கிற அவரது நல்ல நோக்கம் நிச்சயம் படத்திற்கு பிளஸ் ஆக அமைகிறது. சாம் சிஎஸ் இசையில் பிஜிஎம் வொர்க்கவுட் ஆகி உள்ளது.

பகாசூரனின் பலவீனம்

Bakasuran Review: Mohan G Makes A Regressive Lecture Masquerading As A Bad Revenge Drama

When you imagine Mohan G and Selvaraghavan joining hands for a film, you don’t exactly expect a war cry for women’s rights or civil liberties. Bakasuran , obviously, is neither, despite decidedly being a film about violence against women.

Mohan G’s Bakasuran is one part revenge drama, one part investigative thriller, with a heady dollop of exposition and lecturing. Bimarasu (Selvaraghavan) opens the film violently murdering a seemingly lecherous man. He stomps on the man’s crotch and splits his legs so wide, his pants tear. As if Mohan G doesn’t trust your imagination, he shows you the pants tear in the middle. More such murders follow.

On a parallel track, Arul Varman (Nataraja Subramanian), an ex-serviceman is investigating the suicide of his niece. He discovers a sexual abuse and forced prostitution ring, which brings him to cross paths with Bimarasu. And then how the two men perpetuate and celebrate murderous violence makes the rest of the film.

Like the entirety of Mohan G’s work, politically, Bakasuran is a regressive film with the pretence of progressiveness. For instance, all women with bare minimum scenes either disappear or die very soon. Their mothers just wail. An inspector (an earnest Devadarshini ) is transferred. The film doesn’t want any of these women to have even a sense of curiosity to discover the world around them, forget agency. Mohan G decides what ‘ozhungu’ (rightness) means and the women are expected to follow. Else, they die. An adult is so scared of a short video of her kissing her boyfriend being leaked that she falls into blackmail and kills herself later. 

Yet, the film wants us to believe that all parents unilaterally want good for their children. That being transparent with parents about sexual harassment at workplace/university won’t cut short their dreams (though that’s exactly what happens in the film). As audience, you’re just expected to be glad that the father didn’t kill the daughter to protect his honour!

Without empathy for women’s lived experiences — and with an unnatural focus on the maanam of women, family, community and culture — Bakasuran is painfully acrid. To say nothing of the titillating item song! The entire film plays like a mad king violently establishing his new order. Even beyond the women’s angle, the film’s politics are clear as day. 

The good people are believers, complete with rudraksha necklaces, saffron outfits and vibuthi (sacred ash), for good measure. One pimp is a fraud Hindu, who admits to wearing kunkumam only for show. The rationalist is a hypocrite. And the other pimp is a sleeveless-bloused, sunglass-wearing, smoking woman with short coloured hair. The only thing left is to call her Rita or something! At one point, Bimarasu claims that people in Pondicherry and Chennai live like Westerners, so his daughter should study closer to the village. Then, of course, there is the Mahabharata angle, but by now, I’m bored. 

More than being inept, Bakasuran is harmful because it is clearly a message padam . Throughout the film, there’s exposition. In the end, there is a direct advice for parents to increase surveillance on their children — read: daughters — to protect them from sexual harassment. 

The problem is that this message is victim-blaming, regressive and patriarchal. It only works to further lock up women in the name of honour and pride, relegating them to second-class citizens. And it uses society’s most potent weapon to achieve this goal: Family.

Mohan G is many things, but no one can blame him of being discreet. Because just for those of us who were wondering who the Bakasuran here is, he explains in the epilogue. It would be unprofessional of me to give away such a huge spoiler here. You'll have to watch the movie yourself. I'm sorry in advance if you do.

Bakasuran is a film written and directed by Mohan G, and produced by himself under the banner GM Film Corporation. The film stars Selvaraghavan and Natty in the lead roles while Radha Ravi, K Rajan, PL Thennappan, Devadharshini, and others play supporting roles. The film has music by Sam CS and cinematography by Farook J Basha.

Ex-serviceman Major Arul Varman (Natty) is a popular Youtuber who makes videos explaining various crime scenes. One day he gets to know that his niece, a college student, has committed suicide due to marriage pressure by parents. Upon digging deeper, he finds out that she was blackmailed with a video of being intimate with her partner. As he traces the network, he finds out how the entire racket operates.

On the other hand, a Shiva devotee and street theatre artist - Bheemarasu (Selvaraghavan), goes on a killing spree, brutally murdering 2 men and a woman. What is the motive behind these murders? And what connects Arul Varman and Bheemarasu? This is what Bakasuran is all about.

This is Mohan G's fourth film after Pazhaya Vannarapettai, Draupathi, Rudra Thandavam, and one must say Mohan the director has progressed exponentially when it comes to fine tuning the technical aspects of cinema. Especially, when it comes to cinematography and music, Bakasuran is far better than all his previous works. But for each forward step he takes on the filmmaking side, the thoughts in the film take a few steps backward.

The film chooses to address the issue about women being forced into prostitution rackets, and how they are exploited there. However, without addressing what actually forces women into prostitution, the writer in Mohan G conveniently blames a few dating applications for it, and gives a solution where he asks parents to constantly spy on women when they're alone, and check their phones frequently.

With a message that blames women for everything that happens to them, and shifting the onus from the system or society, the film proclaiming to be made to safeguard women, is venomous to say the least. Another issue with Bakasuran is that the film's story takes a backseat while the messaging is on the face and preachy. This affects the engagement and we already know what each character is going to do next, making things completely predictable.

Selvaraghavan is fantastic as Bheemarasu and steals the show in the opening song and a few more scenes. He's one of the actors who should be used in more films but less frequently so that he isn't stereotyped for similar roles. Natty comes as a calm and composed ex-serviceman and does his job very well. Among the rest of the characters, there isn't much to say since their character arcs aren't fully developed. The supporting characters look like mere caricatures - a template evil politician, a template corrupt police officer, a template boyfriend and so on.

Technically, Sam CS' background score lifts a lot of scenes, and makes the film watchable to an extent. However it is Farook's camera work that offers the film a certain visual quality. Both the technicians needed a more engaging script and had that happened, their work would have been par excellence. Barring one or two places, the editor seems to have done a fine job.

Overall, it is delightful to see Mohan evolve as a director who can extract good performances and get things done technically. However, the screenwriting needed to be better. At a time when women are making progress in a lot of fields, a film with regressive thoughts has all possibilities to hamper their progress, will be a topic of debate.

கதையின் கரு:

யூடியூபில் க்ரைம் குறித்த வீடியோக்களை வெளியிட்டு வரும் ரிட்டையர்டு ஆர்மி மேனாக வருகிறார் நட்ராஜன் . இவரது சொந்த அண்ணன் மகள் ரம்யா திடீரென தூக்கிட்டு தற்கொலை செய்து கொள்கிறார். வீட்டில் அனைவரும் திருமணத்திற்கு வற்புறுத்தியதால்தான் ரம்யா தற்கொலை செய்து கொண்டார் என காவல்துறை கேஸை முடிக்கின்றனர். ஆனால், ரம்யாவின் மொபைல் போன் நடராஜனின் கைக்கு கிடைக்கின்றது. அதில், ரம்யா பாலியல் தொழிலில் ஈடுபட்டு வந்ததையும், திருமணம் செய்து கொண்டாலும் இந்த தொழிலில் இருந்து நீ தப்ப முடியாது என யாரோ இவரை மிரட்டுவதையும் தெரிந்து கொள்கிறார் நட்ராஜன். 

அந்த மிரட்டும் நபர் யார் என்று தேடுகையில், பல பெண்கள் பண கஷ்டத்தினால் பாலியல் தொழிலில் பலவந்தமாக தள்ளப்படுவதையும், நட்ராஜன் அறிந்து கொள்கிறார். இது ஒரு பக்கம் இருக்க, பாலியல் தொழிலில் பெண்களை ஈடுபடுத்துவோரையும் அவர்களுக்கு உடந்தையாக இருப்போரையும் தேடித்தேடி கொள்கிறார், பீமராசு (செல்வராகவன்).இருவரது கதையும் வெவ்வேறு வகையில் பயணித்து ஒரு கட்டத்தில் ஒன்றாக இணைகின்றன. பிறகு என்ன நடந்தது? என்பதுதான் கதை. இதற்கிடையில் செல்வராகவனின் கலங்க வைக்கும் ஃப்ளேஷ் பேக், அனைவரும் அறிந்த அதே சமூக கருத்து என படம் பார்ப்பவர்களை கடுப்பேற்றும் அளவிற்கான கதையை எடுத்துள்ளார் மோகன்.ஜி. 

போர் அடிக்காத திரைக்கதை:

பகாசூரன் பட இயக்குனர் மோகன் ஜியின் மிகப்பெரிய ப்ளஸ் பாய்ண்டாக கூறப்படுவது, அவரது போர் அடிக்காத திரைக்கதைதான். அதையே இந்த படத்திலும் ஃபாலோ செய்துள்ளார். என்னதான் சில இடங்களில் அவரது கருத்துகளை ஏற்க முடியவில்லை என்றாலும், அவர் கதையை நேர்த்தியாக கொண்டு போன விதமும் பலரை வியக்கத்தான் வைக்கிறது. 

இருந்தாலும், முதல் பாதி படம் முடிவதற்கு முன்பாகவே பலர் ‘இன்னுமாடா இன்டர்வல் விடல’ என்று கேட்கும் சத்தம் காதில் விழத்தான் செய்கிறது. 

அசத்தல் பர்ஃபாமன்ஸ் கொடுத்த செல்வராகவன் !

பீஸ்ட் படத்தில் குட்டி ரோல் ஒன்றில் நடித்த செல்வராகவன், அடுத்து கீர்த்தி சுரேஷுடன் சாணிகாயிதம் என்ற படத்தில் வெறிப்பிடித்து கொலை செய்யும் மனிதராக நடித்திருந்தார். செல்வாவிற்கு அதே ரோல்தான் இந்த படத்திலும். 

முதல் காட்சியிலேயே ஒருவரை சரமாறியாக போட்டுத்தள்ளும் செல்வராகவன், அடுத்த சீனில் நெற்றி நிறைய பட்டையும் கழுத்தில் ருத்திராட்ச கொட்டயுமாக வருகிறார். ஆரம்பிக்கையில் அவரது நடிப்பு மனதில் ஒட்டவில்லை என்றாலும், படம் முடிந்து எழுந்து செல்கையில் மனம் முழுவதும் அவர்தான் இருக்கிறார். தனது மகளின் சாவிற்கு காரணமாக இருந்தவர்களை போட்டுத்தள்ளும் நேரத்தில் கொடூரமான பீமராசுவிற்கும், ஃப்ளாஷ்பேக்கில் அன்பான அப்பாவாக சாந்தமான பீமராசுவையும் நன்கு வித்தியாசப்படுத்தி பார்க்க முடிகிறது. 

மகளை இழந்து கலங்கும் காட்சியிலும், தன் மகளைப் போல யாரும் இறக்கக்கூடாது என அவர் பலரை துவம்சம் செய்யும் காட்சியிலும் ரசிகர்கள் அனைவரையும் ஆட்கொண்டு விடுகிறார், செல்வா. 

பிண்ணனி இசையில் மாஸ் காட்டியிருக்கிறார், சாம் சி.எஸ். ஆனால், பாடல்கள் அனைத்தும் சுமார் ரகமாக உள்ளதாக எதுவும் மனதில் ஒட்டாமல் நிற்கின்றன. 

‘என்னங்க கதை இது’

இந்த டிஜிட்டல் யுகத்தில் செல்போனைத் தாண்டி உலகில் பல விஷயங்கள் மாறிவிட்டன. ஆனால், பகாசூரன் படத்திலோ நம்ம ஊரில் பழைய பெருசுகள் உளருவதைப் போல “எல்லாப் பிரச்சனையும் இந்த போனாலதான் வருது” என்று கூறும் கருத்தை சீரியசாக எடுத்துக்கொண்டுள்ளனர். பெண்கள், வீடியோ காலில் தங்களது காதலரிடம் அந்தரங்கமாக பேசுவதையும், காதலருடன் முத்தத்தை பரிமாறிக்கொள்வதையும் கூட, “தப்பு தப்பு தல மேல கொட்டு” என்பதைப் போல படத்தில் சித்தரிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. உதாரணத்திற்கு, தனது காதலருக்கு முத்தம் கொடுத்ததை வீடியோ எடுத்த சிலர் தன்னை பாலியல் தொழிலில் ஈடுபட வற்புறுத்துவதாக செல்வராகவனின் மகள் தனது தந்தையிடம் வந்து கூறுவார். அப்போது, “பெரிய தப்பு பன்னிட்டேன் பா..” என்று கூறி கதறுவார். அப்போது செல்வராகவன், “அழாதம்மா, கண்ணு ராஜாத்தி” என்று கூறிவாரே தவிர “நீ செய்ததில் ஒன்றும் தவறில்லை” என்று ஒரு வார்த்தைக் கூட கூறமாட்டார். 

மேற்கூறியதைப் போல, படத்தில் பல ஓட்டைகள் இருந்தன. அதையெல்லாம் பூசி மொழுகக் கூட இயக்குனர் முயற்சியை மேற்கொள்ளவில்லை. எல்லா காட்சியிலும், பெண்கள் நம்பி ஒருவனிடம் தங்களின் உடலைக் காட்டுவதையும், முத்தம் கொடுப்பதையும் குறை சொல்கிறார்களே அன்றி, அவர்கள் குறித்து வீடியோ வெளியிடும் நபர்களை ஒருவரும் ஒன்றும் சொல்லவில்லை. செல்போனால் வரும் பிரச்சனைகளை கூறிவிட்டு அதை கையாள வேண்டிய வழிமுறைகளைப் பற்றி பேசியிருந்தால் இயக்குனரைப் பாராட்டலாம். ஆனால், வெகுஜன மக்களின், “எல்லாமே மொபைல் போனாலதான்” என்ற கருதத்தையே இந்த படத்திலும் திணிக்க முயற்சித்திருப்பது ஏற்றுக்கொள்ள முடியாததாக இருக்கிறது. பெண்களை பாலியல் தொழிலில் எப்படி சிக்கவைக்கின்றனர் என்று கூறிய விதத்தை மட்டும் வேண்டுமானால் பாராட்டலாம். 

மொத்தத்தில் செல்வராகவனுக்காக வேண்டுமானால் பகாசூரனைப் பார்க்கலாம், மற்றபடி சொல்லிக் கொள்வதற்கு ஒன்றுமில்லை என்றே கூற வேண்டும்.

Mohan G's 'Bakasuran', starring Selvaraghavan and Natarajan Subramaniam, is a dull drama about the exploitation of women

There are three narratives buried in the convoluted screenplay of G Mohan's Bakasuran . One is from the Shankar playbook, where a wronged man turns into a vigilante and kills those who wronged him by means of an exotic method. If it was Varmakalai in Indian and tactics from the Garuda Puranam in Anniyan , here the modes of killing are taken from Bheema in the Mahabharata . Mohan G adds a communal angle to this tragedy: in a scene where an affected father talks to and seeks comfort from a blazing fire, he points out that the man belongs to the same community that was enraged by the depiction of the Agni Kundam in Jai Bhim . Selvaraghavan, whose character is named Raasu, plays the vigilante killer. This is not a spoiler because we see him in this mode in the film's very first scene. (His last name is muted in the film, but the trailer told us it was Kachirayar.)

The second narrative in Bakasuran is a broader version of the first narrative. Here, instead of one wronged man, we have many wronged people whose daughters end up in sex work. That is the plot-driving factor in this narrative. If the earlier narrative was a simpler story about a single girl who was traumatised, this narrative is about a larger conspiracy. It's not clear whether the victims belong to the same community as I mentioned above, but based on this filmmaker's earlier work, I think it's possible to guess the identities of the young men who lure these young women into sex work – though I can't say for sure. This narrative involves Natarajan Subramaniam as a successful YouTuber named Arul, who uploads true-crime videos. The character is also something of a detective – though the "clues" in this screenplay are easy enough to follow by anyone who has seen a Tamil movie.

Bakasuran is dull. For all the sensationalism, there is no tension. The two narratives blend together uneasily, and very predictably. And very broadly, too: a man who heads a meeting about violence against women is shown to be a womaniser. Yes, there are a few interesting points raised: for example, if people refuse to report sex crimes fearing for their family honour, then how do we bring the culprits to justice? This is the problem Arul faces. And the solution comes from the other narrative: that the only way to "expose them" is to kill them, or reveal their misdeeds via video recordings. The film says that smartphones are evil and lead to women being led astray by evil men, but it also shows how a smartphone's video camera can be used to bring down the biggest of villains. So is the smartphone good or bad?

The answer is that it's not that simple. Everything that can be used for good purposes can also be used for bad things. So why villainise the poor smartphone, which is just a tool? The best character in Bakasuran is the progressive grandfather played by K Rajan. This man knows that a girl cannot be held responsible if she is duped by bad people, and he even encourages his granddaughter when she brings home a boyfriend. And yet, there is the subtext that had this girl not had a boyfriend, had she just been a "good girl" and concentrated on studies, then none of the things that happened to her would have happened. There is also the subtext that people in cities "live like Westerners" and that women are safest in their own homes. And even there, their safety is suspect because of… smartphones.

In other words, decoding the messaging is more interesting than anything else in this randomly written and unimaginatively directed movie, where a miscast Selvaraghavan is thrown into big action scenes. (See Saani Kaayidham again to recall how wonderfully this actor's unique persona can be used.) And now we come to the third narrative: the subtext in these films by directors who are vocal about caste. The protagonist is shown as a man who lives on alms from a Shiva temple. He sings songs about this God from devotional epics like Pattinathar and the Nandanar , which was about a… Dalit saint. Is the man really a Shiva devotee, or is this just his disguise? After all, he is used to playing parts, being a folk-theatre artist in his village. Like many other movies of this nature, the real interest in Bakasuran may lie in what is being said (or being left unsaid). I don't know the answers, but sociologists and political minds might have a more interesting time with Bakasuran than lay audiences like us.

Bakasuran Movie Review: Mohan G’s latest film trains its furious, problematic gaze on women

Rating: ( 2 / 5).

The title, Bakasuran , is aglow in red flames, and the background music is simply a demonic scream. Director Mohan G is angry again, and this time, he is pissed off about young women and mobile phones. All the rage is channelled through the anti-hero, Bheemarasu (Selvaraghavan, who seems to be playing a continuation of his character from a much better film, Saani Kaayidham ). Bheema is out for blood right from the get-go. The director’s name flashes when Bheemarasu brings down a rock on a man’s head. There’s no aesthetic value to this shot, and neither are you privy to the reason behind the head-bludgeoning.

Cast: Selvaraghavan, Natty, Radha Ravi, Tharakshi In fact, for much of the first half, as Bheema goes about causing fatalities, we get gratuitous violence; we feel the filmmaker smacking his lips in delight, as Bheema, for instance, slits the throat of a woman held upside-down. The misogyny is palpable, and given that the flashback (which attempts to justify Bheema’s actions) comes in much later, all you are left with is a man brutalising a woman, enjoying it, and walking away with her sunglasses soaked in blood. Oh, and in between, Bheema cracks a joke that’s meant to valourise ‘ maanam ’—which as we know by now, is a potent tool to keep women in check. He implies that when offered a choice between ‘ maanam ’ and ‘ uyir ’, women must choose the former. Picture this man—the father to a daughter—saying that should she ever have to choose between ‘ maanam ’ and ‘ uyir ’, he would much rather that she died. Imagine the darkness of such a person’s heart.

The saving grace during these portions is that Selvaraghavan is completely at home playing a twisted man. He breathes menace, seems unpredictable, and is clearly great at dark humour. I’ve also always enjoyed watching actor Natty, and Bakasuran , for a while, seems interestingly structured on the idea of parallel narratives. While Natty’s Major Arul is digging into a case of connected murders, Selva’s Bheema is unleashing brutality. When do their paths converge? Yet, the film overuses this technique to the point of making us feel unsettled—and not in a good way. Major Arul says a line or two and his scene is over. Quickly, we move to Bheema saying a line or two, and we return to Arul once again—and on and on it goes. Also, it doesn’t help that Arul’s methods aren’t exactly ingenious, and Bheema’s crimes too feel repetitive and easily accomplished. He is able to isolate his victims and whip them about till he gets bored. In between, while he’s toying with yet another victim of his, the whole scene is shot in slow-motion. And so, throughout the duel, we get shots of water droplets flying about, the man’s facial flesh quivering after a punch… Is it a weak attempt at craft innovation? Is it a way to savour the attacks longer?

Somehow, in between showing and supposedly caring about how women are exploited, the film itself manages to exploit them. For one, it sneaks in a dull, dull item number, with Mansoor Ali Khan dancing about with a bunch of women. The film’s excuse is that Arul is watching such a song being shot. We see the film’s quieter exploitation when we pay attention to its gaze on the victims. This is especially the case with how the whole Bheema’s daughter story is presented to us. Someone calls her, ‘ Kaamathu kaari ’. Someone else describes her body and suggests that she has eaten ‘ badam ’ and ‘ mundhiri ’. It’s all rather crass, and the film shows no real understanding of how to sensitively present a woman being exploited.

In order to add some intrigue into this bloated, run-of-the-mill revenge story, Mahabharata references are brought in. Apparently, there’s a method to the killings, with parallels drawn to the many demons killed by Mahabharata’s Bheema. It's interesting when we are brought glimpses of Bheema’s life as a village artist. But hardly before any insight into Bheema’s personality and his art can be gleaned, the film turns its focus on the repetitive, exploitative details of the victim-girl-flashback™. Somewhere in between, the film sneaks in its disgust for abortions.

Bakasuran identifies problems and presents silly, superficial solutions. It sees that mobile phones can cause trouble, and its solution is to vilify the whole technology. It sees that young adults can explore their sexuality, and its solution is to disallow privacy. It hopes to strike fear into the hearts of our already insecure parents and urge them to pursue constant surveillance. The film doesn’t understand that the problem is also repressive upbringing; it doesn’t get that the problem is also that youngsters are shamed and humiliated for the slightest, most natural explorations of their sexuality. Isn’t that why Bheema’s daughter feels so disgusted that she shared a kiss? Isn’t that why she feels so scared of talking to her family? Pray, tell me… is the solution then to shut such young adults inside a box, or to foster trust and help them see that they will never be judged—only gently guided? But all of this might just be too much nuance to expect from a film whose portrayal of a bad woman centres on her wearing sleeveless outfits, sporting short hair, and speaking loudly.

இதற்கு முன்பு தான் இயக்கிய 'திரௌபதி, ருத்ரதாண்டவம்' ஆகிய இரண்டு படங்களிலும் சாதிய பிரச்னையை மையக்கருவாக வைத்திருந்த இயக்குனர் மோகன்ஜி, இந்தப் படத்தில் அப்படி எந்த சாதி பிரச்னையையும் கையாளவில்லை. ஆனால், கல்வி நிலையங்களில் நடக்கும் பாலியல் கொடுமை, இளம் பெண்களுக்கு மொபைல் போன்கள் மூலமாக நடக்கும் பாலியல் தொல்லை ஆகியவற்றை மையப்படுத்தி இருக்கிறார். கடைசியில் 'மொபைல்' போன்கள்தான் 'பகாசூரன்' என முடிக்கிறார். ஒரு அப்பாவி கிராமத்து அப்பா கதாபாத்திரத்திற்கு செல்வராகவன் பொருத்தமாகவே இருக்கிறார். சில காட்சிகளில் எமோஷனலாகவும், சில காட்சிகளில் என்ன செய்வது என்று தவித்தும் இருக்கிறார். ஆனால், அவர் செய்யும் கொலைகளை காவல் துறை கூட கண்டும் காணாமல் இருப்பது நம்பும்படியாக இல்லை. முன்னாள் மேஜர் நடராஜ், நாட்டில் பரபரப்பை ஏற்படுத்திய குற்றங்களைப் பற்றிய க்ரைம் வீடியோக்களைப் பதிவிடும் இந்நாள் யுடியூபராக நடத்திருக்கிறார். அவரது கதாபாத்திரம் மூலம் அப்பாவி பெண்கள் எப்படி பாலியல் வலையில் சிக்க வைக்கப்படுகிறார்கள் என்பதை ஒரு பாடமாகக் கொடுத்திருக்கிறார் இயக்குனர். பெற்றோர்கள் அவர்களது மகன்கள், மகள்கள் என்ன செய்கிறார்கள் என்பதைக் கண்காணிக்க வேண்டும் என்பது பலருக்குமான ஒரு எச்சரிக்கை மணி. செல்வராகவனின் அப்பாவாக தயாரிப்பாளர் கே.ராஜன், கல்வி நிறுவனத்தின் தாளாளர் ஆக ராதாரவி, செல்வராகவனின் மகளாக ரிச்சா, புரோக்கராக கூல் ஜெயந்த், ஹாஸ்டல் வார்டனாக சசி லயா ஆகியோர் குறிப்பிட வேண்டிய மற்ற கதாபாத்திரங்களில் நடித்திருக்கிறார்கள். சாம் சிஎஸ் பின்னணி இசை சில காட்சிகளுக்கு பலத்தைக் கொடுக்கிறது. 'சிவ சிவாயம்' பாடல் தெய்வீகமாய் ஒலிக்கிறது. முந்தைய இரண்டு படங்களிலும் மேக்கிங்கை சிறப்பாகச் செய்திருந்தார் மோகன் ஜி. இந்தப் படத்தில் அந்தப் படங்களின் தரத்திலிருந்து கீழிறங்கி இருக்கிறார். படம் மிக மிக மெதுவாக நகர்கிறது. இடைவேளைக்குப் பின் செல்வராகவன், அவரது மகள் ரிச்சா சம்பந்தப்பட்ட பிளாஷ்பேக் காட்சிகளை சுருக்கமாக முடித்திருக்கலாம். மூன்று கொலைகள், ஒரு அப்பாவி பெண்ணின் தற்கொலை என பரபரப்பான த்ரில்லருக்குரிய விஷயம் படத்தில் இருக்கிறது. ஆனால், திரைக்கதையில் அதற்குரிய விறுவிறுப்பை ஏற்படுத்தவில்லை. அறிவியல் கண்டுபிடிப்புகள் எல்லாவற்றிலுமே நல்லதும் இருக்கிறது, கெட்டதும் இருக்கிறது. அவற்றை நல்ல முறையில் எப்படி பயன்படுத்துகிறோம் என்பது நம் கைகளில்தான் இருக்கிறது. ஆனால், 'மொபைல்' போன்கள் எல்லாம் நமது வாழ்க்கையை அழிக்க வந்த 'பகாசூரன்' என்பதை முழுமையாக ஏற்றுக் கொள்ள முடியாது. பகாசூரன் - பாதிசூரன்

Director Mohan G Kshatriyan's Bakasuran is an honest film on a subject that has seldom been touched in Tamil cinema so far.

Bakasuran deals with the menace of online prostitution and also showcases the manner in which mobile apps that have been developed for this purpose in the market trap unwary and gullible youngsters, and draw them into the profession. It also shows how the victims, once trapped, can’t find a way to get out of the system.

The story begins with Bheema Rasu (Selvaraghavan) — a folk artist who performs on the streets — killing a college professor looking to exploit one of his female students in a lonely place.

Bheema Rasu doesn’t stop with just one murder.

He goes on a killing spree, calmly tracking and cleverly plotting the deaths of a series of individuals over a period of time.

As Bheema Rasu continues to ferociously and diligently hunt down his victims, a retired Major from the Indian Army called Arun Varman (Natty) is in for a shock.

Arun, who has turned a YouTuber after his stint in the armed forces, gets to hear the tragic news of his young niece’s suicide.

Initially, like the girl’s parents, he also believes that she committed suicide because of not liking a prospective alliance that her parents fixed for her.

However, long after the police close the case as a matter of suicide, he stumbles upon evidence in her phone that makes him realise that his niece was in the grip of a powerful and dangerous gang indulging in prostitution.

He begins to follow the trail. What happens then is what the film is all about.

Does Arun Varman track the gang down? Does he find the kingpin? What does he do to them? Does Bheema Rasu stop killing people? Why is he killing so many people?

Bakasuran gives you the answers to all these questions and more.

Its biggest strength is its honesty

Mohan G Kshatriyan needs to be appreciated for turning the spotlight on an issue that nobody seemed to have the guts to talk about for a very long time.

He boldly holds a mirror to society’s ugly face and highlights the dangers that mobile phones and other technological advancements pose to children and families.

The film is like an awakening call to parents, urging them to keep a close watch over what their wards do with their mobile phones in private.

Bakasuran ‘s strength lies in its honesty. The director seems to have made a sincere attempt at presenting the pressing issue in as honest a manner as possible.

What also helps the cause is the fact that Mohan does not dilute the seriousness of the issue with unnecessary melodrama.

The dialogues are hard-hitting and to the point. There is one dialogue that Selvaraghavan’s character Bheema Rasu delivers in the first half that is exceptional.

Lamenting about his misfortune to the presiding deity in a temple, Bheema Rasu offers a prayer.

In it, he confesses how vulnerable he is, saying he does not know how he is going to take on his opponents who are high and mighty.

He prays for strength that will enable him to take all the pain that is going to be inflicted on him and the power that will inflict pain on his opponents.

That portion is rooted in reality and handsomely enhances the credibility of the plot.

Brilliant performances

The film also has some really convincing performances to offer.

Selvaraghavan aces the role of Bheema Rasu with absolute ease.

Inconsolable when he’s alone and menacing and merciless when it comes to murdering those on his target list, Selvaraghavan is on a roll in the film.

Natty as the retired army Major turned YouTuber turns in a fine performance.

His dialogues are measured and go perfectly well with the role he plays.

Newcomer Tarakshi, who plays Selvaraghavan’s daughter in the film, is a perfect fit for the role. Simple, soft-spoken, and trusting, she looks convincing as a first-time graduate.

She does a fantastic job throughout the film, particularly in the sequences in which she begins to tremble, knowing her inadvertent mistake is proving to be costly.

Exceptional music

On the technical front, Sam CS is at his scintillating best.

Both songs in the film and their background score work big time. The background score intensifies the mood and thereby lifts the film to another level altogether.

Very simply put, Mohan G Kshatriyan seems to have delivered a commendable film that takes immense courage to make!

Bakasuran movie review: mohan g's film about women caught up in sex rackets can get too problematic, too quickly..

Filmmaker Mohan G has become one of the most controversial names in mainstream cinema in recent times. With his films such as Draupadi and Rudhra Thandavam, he’s strongly evolved as a filmmaker who thrives on making films on controversial issues. He continues the trend with his latest release Bakasuran, a vigilante drama that throws the spotlight on some sex scandals and how innocent young women are trapped in this web. As much as the film tries to educate viewers about these shocking scandals, it also makes it very problematic by further victimising the women. The story opens with Beemarasu ( Selvaraghavan ) following a man deep into a forest. A scene later, we see Beemarasu killing that man in cold blood. It doesn’t take much time to figure out that he’s on a killing spree but the reason behind it isn’t revealed until the second half. Parallel to it, we are introduced to an ex-serviceman turned YouTuber (Natty) who makes videos on shocking crimes. Natty’s life comes to a standstill when he comes to learn that his niece has died by suicide. When her phone is handed over to him after the case gets closed, he learns about a shocking secret. As he starts investigating the case after taking special permission from the local police, he uncovers more secrets that involve a lot of young women. The case keeps getting murkier, and at some point, he crosses paths with Beemarasu and both of them realize they’re fighting for the same cause.

The film throws the spotlight on some sex scandals that shook the people of Tamil Nadu in recent years. It is laudable that the movie tries to educate viewers about how young women get trapped in these scandals but at the same time it’s problematic. Throughout the film, men keep lecturing about how women shouldn’t fall prey to dating apps. At a crucial juncture, when a young woman opens up to her father about being sexually harassed in her college, her grandfather casually passes a line about women who indulge in casual sex and abortion. He tries to justify what’s happened to his granddaughter is not as shameful as what most women are indulging in these days. The film is filled with several such problematic references and it only victimises the women even more.

Selvaraghavan is earnest and aptly cast as the man who wants to fight for a lost cause. He makes the emotional moments really work, especially the scenes with his daughter. Natty is also effectively cast and he owns his scenes very well. Radha Ravi as the prime antagonist is so badly written that the character hardly creates any impact. At best, it’s a character that leaves you feeling disgusted.

Director Mohan G, who made Tamil cinema fans look back with his films like 'Draupathi' and 'Rudra Thandavam', is currently producing and directing the film 'Bakasuran' under GM Film Corporation. Director Selvaraghavan is playing the lead role in this film and Natty is acting in another important role. Radharavi and K Rajan are playing the main characters who move the story forward. Natty plays the main character in this film after Mari Selvaraj's 'Karnan'. Starring Mansoor Ali Khan, Devadarsini, PL Thenappan, Gunanidhi, Sasi Laiya, Richa, Kooljayant, Jacob, Arunodayan, Kutty Gopi. Cinematography by Farooq J Badshah and music has been composed by Sam CS. S Devaraj is editing the film and SK is working as the art director. Selva has choreographed a realistic fight sequence.

Story, screenplay & dialogues were written and directed by Mohan G. Speaking about the film, director Mohan G said that just as Draupathi and Rudra Thandavam was based on real events in the society, Bakasuran is a story written based on real events in Salem, Arcot, Pondicherry. "This movie is a screenplay created for people and parents to create awareness about what is happening in society in the name of massage centers, online prostitution and virtual prostitution. Selvaraghavan has played the lead role in this film. Although he has already acted in the Vijay film Beast, this is the first film in which he will play the main character of the story. Natraj plays a role opposite Selvaraghavan as the supporting actor in this film.

"Like my previous films, this film also has a plot. The only thing I will repeat is for parents, young women and teenagers, what kind of apps are dangerously located on the modern day mobile. In this movie we have told in detail how to protect yourself from them." says Mohan G.

Sam CS recently said, "I believe in this famous saying by Narayana Guru, 'Whatever may be your religion, humanity should live.' I didn't watch Mohan G's previous films. When he called me to work with him in this film, I told my well wishers that someone in the name of Mohan G is calling me. They got shocked and said, 'He will do only caste based films. Stay away from him.' But have this habit of taking the final call only based on the scripts. Having their words in mind, I went and heard to story from Mohan G. He narrated the script for almost 2 hours. Frankly speaking I went there with a mindset to say No if it was a caste based film. But to my surprise the story was not based on caste. It had an important social message that needs to be told. It will be a big eye opener for many parents. As the dialogue from the film says, we don't know what our kids are doing inside their rooms with a mobile phone in hand. I believe this film will create the much needed awareness for school and college going girls especially. Musically there is enough scope for me to score. So i said yes and came into this project.

Mohan G told me that I will get trolled in social media for doing this. I didn't take that seriously as I don't believe in caste. But to my surprise, when I searched my name in Google after committing this film, most of the searches were about my caste."

Bakasuran Movie Review: A Regressive Storytelling With A Wonderful Screenplay!

The Tamil movie Bakasuran started screening in theaters on 17th Feb 2023. People have mixed views about this crime thriller. The action-packed drama centers around cyber harassment crimes happening to women in this modernized world. The movie talks about how women are exploited with sexual crimes while also projecting regressive ideologies about them. 

The movie was produced and directed by director and writer Mohan G under the banner of G M Films corporation. Director Mohan G is famous for making films on controversial topics. His movies Draupathi (2020) and Rudra Thandavam (2021) also had debatable plotlines. Mohan’s unique touch is clearly visible in every shot of this film too.

The lead actors, Selvaraghavan and Natarajan Subramaniam, take us through this revenge thriller with their extraordinary acting. The movie also stars notable actors like Radha Ravi and Mansoor Ali Khan in supporting roles. The background score for this movie was composed by music director Sam C.S. while Devaraj S and Farook J. Basha worked on the editing and cinematography of the film.

Let’s jump into the plot of the movie first. The story parallelly revolves around two characters – Bheema Rasu (Selvaraghavan) and Major Arulvarman (Natarajan Subramaniam). The movie opens with Bheema Rasu following a man into a forest and killing him deliberately.

He continues his gruesome murders, and we do not know the reason behind them. As we move on with the storyline, it is understood that the people Bheema Rasu has been killing all along were lustful adults who coax and convince young girls into prostitution.

On the other hand, the story focuses on ex-army officer Major Arulvarman, who now runs a YouTube channel where he educates people on criminology. Arulvarman’s life is comfortable and happy until one day; he learns that his niece has committed suicide.

Arulvarman is shocked and confused about her sudden demise. He later gets his niece’s mobile phone and discovers things that leave him in a state of dismay. With legal permission from the police, Arulvarman starts to investigate the case himself.

He later uncovers the truth about a group of people who sexually exploit women and convince them into prostitution. He slowly connects the dots to the murders Bheema Rasu has committed, and they both cross paths. He also learns the reason behind Bheema Rasu’s cold-hearted murders and realizes they both have the same motives. 

The movie projects a strong message on how innocent women are lulled into these sex scandals, but the repetitive imposing of this has gone way over the lines. The voice of the director is well-heard throughout the movie, and in each scene, we feel like it was a woman’s or a girl’s fault that these assaults happened to them. 

“If you had not opened a social media account, this guy  wouldn’t have misbehaved with you!”, “If you had worn decent dresses, then that man would not have touched you!” is how the director voices the whole film, which makes it look like women are the ones responsible for the actions of men, and it falls upon us to make sure we are not being harassed by the men around us.

The references from this movie do not just justify the actions of the assaulters but also project it as the mistake of the women. This shows the regressive thoughts people have about women and the things they go through. 

On the other hand, the movie talks about the importance of being open about the things you are going through with your parents. It also stirs up a strong message to the parents to understand and listen to their children when something goes wrong and to stop making the child feel like it’s his or her fault. It also highlights the significance of trust between the parents and the children. 

Other than this, the best part about the movie was Selva’s acting. He blew our minds away with his natural dialogue delivery and aggressive body language, which was very much needed with this plotline. Though the plot disappointed us in a few areas, Selva’s acting made up for it. Natty also plays his part extraordinarily. The antagonists were also a weak link. The characters were underdeveloped and had no serious impact on the audience. 

The screenplay was direct and emoted the sentiments clearly, though, at some points, the relatability with the characters was missing. As an audience, it was difficult to empathize with many characters in many scenes. The music held the film together, and the cinematography was brilliant. Though the film had a strong message, it failed to impact the audience with it. Overall, it was a decent movie!

Our verdict:

The film would have done a lot better if the regressive thoughts about women were excluded and the story highlighted more on the actual people at fault for the sexual crimes that happen to women. 

In one line,  “ A regressive revenge drama that could have been better ” is what Bakasuran is. 

Our Rating: ⭐ (3.5/5).

Bakasuran Review - Outdated Cringe Fest!

Bakasuran is a Selvaraghavan and Natty starrer crime drama. The film is directed by Mohan. G of Draupati and Rudra Thandavam fame.

Selvaraghavan is brutally killing people on one side and Natty is investigating a suicide case on the other. Both the tracks collide at a point and what happens after that forms the remaining story.

Writing/ Direction

Mohan. G is known for touching sensitive topics within the story, this film is no exception for that. He has tried to convey a message about women safety with a two layer coating, one is via prostitution and another one through misuse of smartphones. Unfortunately, both the routes are lethargically handled with an age-old screenplay. The seriousness exists only in the outline but nowhere on the substance. The flow is so straightforward and predictable, anyone could easily guess what is coming next. The revenge angle isn't exciting as the characters and the pain they went through are shown in a detailed flashback but failed to land strongly. Most of the sequences are empty with no interesting elements to engage. The already boring scenes are very much long-drawn-out. Very few witty dialogues which the protagonist utters in unexpected situations are enjoyable. Otherwise, a messy flick all the way as the screenwriting and direction style are so amateurish.

Performances

Feels like Selvaraghavan will fit for roles in which he can stay stone-faced. His dialogue delivery is decent, but his performance is underwhelming and he couldn’t exhibit the graceful body language which his character demands. Natty does a harmless job in the ample screen time he has got. The supporting artists are poorly casted, keeping aside a few, we get to see a lot of exaggerated performances.

Technicalities

Technically it’s much better than Mohan. G’s previous ventures. The songs are truthful to the situations, nothing much to blame with respect to the background score too. Neat camera work as the quality is overall good, also the DI is done well although there are not many variations. Editing is weak as the film is lagging in most of the places, even the simplest of points are told in a lengthy manner. Stunt choreography is fine as the approach is realistic, but the way it is presented with high-speed shots is a poor decision.

A sensitive topic which could have been much more as a film, but settles on the ground level due to a flat screenplay. The approach is extremely preachy as the done and dusted messages are thrown directly to our faces which makes it worse.

Chiyaan Vikram is a strange beast whose ambitions and aspirations know no bounds. He has constantly pushed the envelope with his film choices and performances that have resonated with both his fans and critics. In many of the instances, he has been both praised and accused of doing more for the films than the films doing for him. Is Pa. Ranjith’s Thangalaan an addition to the list? Maybe or maybe not. But yes, it’s yet another display of ferociousness that not too many people can rival, let alone trump.

In both Anniyan and I , he had to deal with three different characters residing in the same body. This time, the number goes up to five. Of course, the central figure is the eponymous character himself, who tells bedtime stories to his children which marks the introduction of the character of Aarthi (played by Malavika Mohanan, who ignites equally impressive rage and angst). The beauty of the film lies in the fact how rustic the actors are willing to look and how far ahead they are ready to go. This is the world of KGF, where barbarism could be a human, a resident, and a brutal reality.

I’m completely unaware of the existence of this grand world and how traumatic the lives were, but Ranjith shoots the film with the kind of scale that’s different from what we have experienced before. The color coordination swings between red and blue. Vikram’s body possesses a streak of brown. These different shades could also depict the different personalities of the characters as well as the film. Red could mean rage, blue could mean calmness, and brown could depict dung. Thangalaan is carried on the shoulders of the leading man who seldom skips a beat.

If there’s anything the film could’ve done better with was the length and the way Ranjith tells the story of the villagers. Does he get carried away with the sweeping style of his shots that he forgets to infuse a certain sense of emotional urgency? There’s a plethora of gravitas on display, but some hollow scenes stick out like a sore thumb. Nevertheless, Vikram and Malavika add that extra pinch of salt to a dish that could’ve turned completely bland. They add that tadka of desi deliciousness to a recipe that was purely aiming for stylized packaging.

Rating: 3.5 (out of 5 stars)
