Why Yoga Is Good for Your Body and Brain, According to Science

When I (Dacher Keltner) was 18, I wandered into a yoga class in my first year of college, hosted on a basketball court in the school’s gym. At the time, some 40 years ago, yoga had mystical, somewhat cult-like connotations. While a handful of students waited on mats, the teacher arrived dressed in white clothes, looking like Jesus. After playing a song on a wooden flute, and reading a few Haiku poems, he led the class through a series of yoga postures. Yoga, just getting off the ground in the West, would prove to be a salve for my anxious tendencies.

Yoga may very well be one of our oldest happiness practices. Archeologists have discovered figurines in India that date from 5,000 years ago that represent what appear to be people in yoga postures. More certain is that yoga emerged some 2,500 years ago in Indus-Sarasvati civilization in Northern India as part of Hinduism.

Many in the West are familiar with one vein of yoga practices: the asanas, a Sanskrit that translates to “postures.” The full tradition is much broader, and encompasses pranayama (mindful breathing), meditations, chanting, sutras (yoga philosophy by the sage Patanjali), kriya (internal cleansing movements), and ethical principles related to kindness, selflessness, non-materialism, and nonviolence. Over its history, yoga has evolved into many forms, from Tai Chi and Qi Gong to hot yoga and core power yoga.

Today in the U.S., more than 36 million people practice yoga on a regular basis. Deep breathing, like the kind cultivated in yoga, activates the vagus nerve, the large branch of nerves that begins at the top of the spinal cord and stimulates activation in the vocal apparatus, muscles that move the head and eyes, heart, respiration, digestive organs, and gut. Elevated vagal tone is good for a host of bodily functions, like digestion and immune function.

Some forms of slow yoga breathing involve contracting the glottis muscles in the throat, which improves the heart’s capacity to efficiently regulate blood pressure, and there’s some evidence that practicing yoga can reduce blood pressure .

In a recent study , 29 participants were randomly assigned to a four-month training program of either stretching or yoga respiratory exercises (ujjayi breath). During that time, the yoga group improved their inspiratory and expiratory pressures, the low/high-frequency ratio of heart rate variability, and heart rate variability itself—all markers of better cardiovascular and respiratory function . Simply stretching didn’t have the same effects.

In another recent study from a team at UC San Diego, 38 people who participated in a three-month yoga retreat showed a decrease in inflammatory processes , an immune response related to high blood pressure, diabetes, and autoimmune disease.

Given these shifts in the cardiovascular and nervous systems, it makes sense that yoga is good for our health. A regular practice can help loosen the muscles and connective tissues around the joints, which in turn can reduce aches and pains. In one recent study , 75 rheumatoid arthritis patients were randomly assigned to an eight-week yoga program or a waitlist. Rheumatoid arthritis, a painful condition that involves tender, swollen joints, is estimated to affect 54 million Americans each year and cost the health care system $19 billion . The patients who practiced yoga saw significant improvements in their experiences of physical pain, general health, vitality, and mental health, and these reductions in pain lasted nine months after the study ended.

According to other studies , practicing yoga can help reduce people’s stress, anxiety , and depression —perhaps better than traditional medication if you practice daily for over a month. Yoga has also been found to be an effective way to help people overcome addictions . In light of these findings, it’s not surprising that regular practitioners of yoga report being happier .

How yoga makes us happy

How does yoga make us happier? It might be related to its effects on heart rate variability and the vagus nerve, according to a review of 59 studies with a total of nearly 2,400 participants. People with higher heart rate variability and vagus nerve activity tend to be kinder and more compassionate, qualities that make for a happier life.

Yoga also shifts our brain chemistry . In one study, Chantal Villemure and colleagues from the National Institutes of Health used magnetic resonance imaging to examine gray matter in the brain, which naturally declines with age. They found that yoga practitioners had less grey matter decline in regions of the cortex involved in the experience of positive states such as joy and happiness.

Finally, yoga has been found to increase activity in the anterior cingulate cortex and the medial prefrontal cortex, brain areas that are associated with empathy, gratitude, and kindness. In other words, practicing yoga may help us experience more positive emotions and be more oriented toward others, both of which can create lasting happiness over time.

Eight years ago, I (Jaylissa Zheng) moved to New York. It was a move that left me suffering from many of the struggles that are rampant today: anxiety, sleeplessness, poor appetite, and a sense of despair. Medication did little, if anything, for my suffering. So I turned to yoga; I became a yoga teacher. And in performing and teaching this ancient happiness practice, I have found an embodied source of ever-richer resilience. Essay: Yoga and the healthy mind in a healthy body

On the international day of yoga, a look at the yogic arts of ancient india and their modern applications.

While yoga has become immensely popular across the globe, most of us – whether in India or abroad – think of it in terms of a series of asanas designed primarily to make us more flexible. We think of it as a practice that confers dexterity and physical well-being. However, Patanjali, the compiler of the foundational text on yoga, the Yoga Sutra , was at least as interested in mental wellness as in physical health. In fact, King Bhoja, who wrote a commentary on the Yoga Sutra , thanks Patanjali for using yoga to “remove the impurities of the mind”.

Patanjali defined yoga as suppressing the tendency of the mind to wander, when one wants instead to concentrate ( yogah chitta-vritti-nirodhah ). In the types of mental distraction he discusses, he mentions getting lost in past memories, or daydreaming about the future, instead of focusing on the task at hand. Current day psychologists and counsellors and countless TED talks advocate living in the present moment, not in the past or the future. Apparently, Patanjali had the same idea a very long time ago (scholars disagree on his actual date, estimates range from the 5th century BC to a few hundred years later). In fact, Patanjali even lays down mindfulness as one of the ways to train the mind for intense concentration. This involved fully savouring a sensory experience of one’s choice – without letting any other thoughts or acts detract from the experience. Mindful meditation is, of course, a buzzword now, but most of us have no idea of it being initially discussed in Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra . Interestingly, Patanjali mentions several other meditation techniques that are popular in modern times, including visualization and focusing on the breath. He also advocated training the mind to remember dreams. Dream analysis is a crucial tool used by modern day psychoanalysts as well.

For Patanjali, the ultimate goal was being able to concentrate so intensely that one immerses oneself fully in the subject, losing all sense of being separate from the topic of one’s focus. He recommends a sequence of steps for getting to this goal, one of which entails cultivating contentment. Patanjali advocates achieving contentment in two ways. The first involves consciously feeling gratitude for the gift of being alive, while the second involves acceptance of oneself and one’s circumstances. Both these methods – gratitude and self-acceptance – are emphasized repeatedly by modern day psychologists. For instance, Robert Emmons, regarded as the world’s leading scientific expert on gratitude, has authored books detailing the benefits of expressing gratitude, especially in the form of a sense of awe and wonder at the miracle of simply being alive. (Empirical studies on this mainly focused on the positive effects of gratitude on health and productivity). Self-acceptance is also commonly seen by modern psychologists as being a key component of happiness and mental health. In Patanjali’s opinion, feeling grateful and accepting oneself would make one contented, and a contented person has a relatively untroubled mind, making concentration easier for such a person.

Coming to yet another remarkable similarity between Patanjali’s way of thinking and current day psychological thought requires us to talk about Patanjali’s prohibition against murder. This was one of the chief prohibitions that, according to Patanjali, needed to be observed if one wanted to develop powers of intense concentration; a murderer could not become a yogi. Interestingly, Patanjali was completely non-judgmental of the fact that a person might feel like killing someone else. He even explains what one can do in such a situation to avoid actually acting on the impulse. In this, Patanjali was very like modern psychologists, for whom censoring thoughts is completely unnecessary (they only restrict actions, which ought not to hurt oneself or others). This is also in sharp contrast with a lot of philosophies which condemn “sinful thoughts”.

Yoga was actually much older even than Patanjali, who simply compiled existing theories on yoga into a high-quality text. For instance, the physician Charaka mentions quite another form of yoga in his ancient medical text the Charaka-samhita , thought to be even older than Patanjali. Perhaps to help aspiring medical students, Charaka’s yoga simply aimed at making people better at memorising facts! It, too, emphasised mindfulness.

Even more intriguingly, as described by archaeologist Rita Wright in her 2010 book on the Indus valley civilization (IVC), many seals found in IVC sites depict figures in what seem to be yogic postures. One shows a seated figure immersed in a yogic trance, paying no attention at all to the wild animals surrounding him, or to the fact that a man next to him is spearing a water buffalo! The yogi remains in his inner world, tranquil and undisturbed. In another seal, two kneeling people present an offering to a figure seated in a yogic stance. The best known of the Mohenjodaro seals is the “Pashupati” seal, which shows a three-faced figure seated in a yogic posture, surrounded by Indus animals such as lions, elephants, and buffaloes. Pashupati is associated with Rudra, an early version of Shiva, the ultimate yogi.

The figures in the seals show utmost concentration, of the sort described much later by Patanjali. They are not distracted by all the hunting going on around them, or by the various humans or animals approaching them. So, it is unlikely that the people who made the seals were beginners exploring and experimenting with yoga – yogic practitioners seem to .have already attained a very high degree of proficiency by the time of the Indus valley civilization (which itself was at its height in the third millennium BC). They evidently commanded reverence and were known for their powers of deep concentration. While Mesopotamian and Persian seals from the time of the IVC exist, that also show narrative imagery, they lack figures in yogic poses, suggesting the unlikeliness of foreign influences. Archaeological evidence suggests that yoga was most likely even older than the seals in the IVC.

The regard in which yoga was held is evident in ancient Sanskrit literature. For example, in Bharavi’s sixth century epic poem, the Kiratarjuniya , Arjuna is a hero not because of his prowess in battle, but because of his yogic abilities. He was able to still all contemplation and meditate. (The sixth canto of the poem describes how Arjuna’s meditation made even wild beasts in the forests on the hill feel more tranquil, by the power of influence).

A key component in achieving concentration in Patanjali’s system was the state of dhyana = which became known as zen in East Asian Buddhism, where it was taken by a fifth century South Indian prince, Bodhidharma. Documentary evidence about Bodhidharma comes not from India, but from other countries – primarily China, but also Indonesia, Tibet and Japan. The oldest Chinese source about him dates from the early sixth century. He is first mentioned by Tanlin (506-574), followed by other Chinese sources like Jingjue‘s(683-750) The Chronicles of the Lankavatara masters , Daoxuan’s seventh century Further biographies of Eminent Monks , and the tenth century Record of the Patriarchal Hall . Japanese and Indonesian sources also mention him (according to the modern Japanese scholar Tsutomu Kambe, who studied the manuscripts about him, Bodhidharma was from a Brahmin royal dynasty (a rarity) and was probably from Kanchipuram.) All these sources recount how Bodhidharma, a practitioner of yoga, travelled to China via a harrowing voyage by sea, had a spectacularly unsuccessful interview with the Chinese emperor, whom he managed to offend, and then made his way to the Shaolin monastery. His reputation as an eccentric having probably preceded him, Bodhidharma was refused admittance into the monastery by the Shaolin monks, but remained completely unperturbed. He literally settled down next to the monastery and spent the next nine years gazing at a wall. There were plenty of wild animals in the area surrounding the Shaolin temple, but they did not attack Bodhidharma. One is reminded of the Indus valley yogis meditating undisturbed by dangerous animals nearby, or of Arjuna’s calming influence on the animals of the forest during his penance in the Kiratarjuniya .

Gradually, the Shaolin monks, who had started bringing Bodhidharma food and water, grew curious and in awe of his mental discipline, his perseverance and physical hardiness. After nine years, Bodhidharma was finally given a room in the monastery, and taught the monks – at their behest – dhyana or Zen meditation. With its emphasis on meditation, quieting the mind and focusing on the breath, the popularity of Zen subsequently spread from East and South-East Asia to the West and is finally making its presence felt in the homeland of Buddhism, India.

From the intrepid yogis of the Indus valley civilization, to scholars like Patanjali, who sought to harness its powers for mental concentration and contentment, to Buddhists like Bodhidharma who spread it worldwide, yoga has gone through many avatars. On International Yoga Day, aficionados can rejoice in the enduring legacy of yoga across the globe, and in its holistic approach to both mental health and physical endurance.

If you’ve done your “downward dog” yoga pose today, you’re probably feeling more relaxed. Regardless of your level of yoga expertise, if you’re practicing regularly, you can feel better from head to toe.

Slow movements and deep breathing increase blood flow and warm up muscles, while holding a pose can build strength. Try it:  Tree Pose Balance on one foot, while holding the other foot to your calf or above the knee (but never on the knee) at a right angle. Then, exhale, as you draw your navel toward your spine, arching your spine like a cat stretching. 

3. Yoga can ease arthritis symptoms.

Gentle yoga has been shown to ease some of the discomfort of tender, swollen joints for people with arthritis, according to  a Johns Hopkins review of 11 recent studies .

4. Yoga benefits heart health.

Regular yoga practice may reduce levels of stress and body-wide inflammation, contributing to  healthier hearts.  Several of the factors contributing to heart disease, including high blood pressure and excess weight, can also be addressed through yoga. Try it:  Downward Dog Pose Get on all fours, then tuck your toes under and bring your sitting bones up, so that you make a triangle shape. Keep a slight bend in your knees, while lengthening your spine and tailbone.

5. Yoga relaxes you, to help you sleep better.

Research shows  that a consistent bedtime yoga routine can help you get in the right mindset and prepare your body to fall asleep and stay asleep.

Try It:  Legs-Up-the-Wall Pose Sit with your left side against a wall, then gently turn right and lift your legs up to rest against the wall, keeping your back on the floor and your sitting bones close to the wall. You can remain in this position for 5 to 15 minutes. 

6. Yoga can mean more energy and brighter moods.

You may feel increased mental and physical energy, a boost in alertness and enthusiasm, and fewer negative feelings after getting into a routine of practicing yoga.

7. Yoga helps you manage stress. 

According to the National Institutes of Health, scientific evidence shows that yoga supports stress management, mental health, mindfulness, healthy eating, weight loss and quality sleep.

Try It:  Corpse Pose (Savasana)  Lie down with your limbs gently stretched out, away from the body, with your palms facing up. Try to clear your mind while breathing deeply. You can hold this pose for 5 to 15 minutes.

Participating in yoga classes can ease loneliness and provide an environment for group healing and support. Even during one-on-one sessions loneliness is reduced as one is acknowledged as a unique individual, being listened to and participating in the creation of a personalized yoga plan.

The U.S. military, the National Institutes of Health and other large organizations are listening to — and incorporating — scientific validation of yoga’s value in health care.

Stress is part of life and will continue to exist throughout the life of human beings. Human beings have come up with various ways of managing stress and yoga is one of them. Although stress has adverse effects on the health and general well being of human beings, it is argued that stress is not necessarily bad (McCall 48). Human beings need some amount of stress to give them the needed pressure to do some things.

A lot of stress that is not well managed can lead to a lot of diseases because the stress hormone known as cortisol lowers a person’s immunity against diseases (McCall 49). The human mind is the source of all stress and the yoga technology helps in making a person’s mind work for his or her benefit and therefore reduces unnecessary stress. This paper will highlight the nine experiential exercises of yoga.

To begin with, guided relaxation is one of the best relaxations that involve relaxing all the body muscles in a comfortable position as one imagines a smile. The smile should be felt by all the body organs. This slows down breathing and completely relaxing the body. The second experiential exercise is referred to as meditation on the breath where one is supposed to focus on their breathing with closed eyes as they try much as possible to forget about other things (McCall 54).

This exercise helps the mind to become clear and briefly forget the never ending distractions. By following the breathing pattern in a relaxed position away form all kinds of noise; one is able to experience some peace even if it is just for a short while. Meditation on breath helps people become calm by being able to control their minds from distractions.

Breathing assessment is very essential in determining whether one breathes normally or not. Stress and anxiety reverses ones breathing with the abdomen moving in the reverse direction during breathing. The yoga technique helps one to normalize their breathing and in the process lowering stress levels. Belly breathing is a yoga technique used to solve the problem of reverse breathing. The abdominal muscles are contracted gently in a sitting or lying position (McCall 58).

Those doing this exercise are advised to lie on their back as they inhale and exhale gently. The next experiential exercise in yoga is the palming exercise that involves rubbing of palms in a comfortable sitting position. A period of twenty seconds is enough for the hands to generate some heat. The next step is the closing of eyes and placing the warm palms gently on the cheeks and eye sockets. The chest should remain upright for the body to relax as the palms ease the tension in the eyes (McCall 60).

Standing in an upright position and imagining your eyes can see what is on the side helps release tension from the eyes. This exercise is referred to as eyes on the side of your head. Relaxation by being motionless as you lie on your back for almost half a minute is another way of releasing tension (McCall 64). Eyes should be gently closed with the palms facing upwards. All the body muscles should be relaxed especially the jaws.

The leg –up-the -wall pose is another form of relaxation. In this exercise, the back is supported by a bolster or other soft materials like a blanket. One is supposed to remain in this position for almost ten minutes in order for the normal curve of the body spine to be maintained. The “so ham” meditation focuses on the sound of the breath for relaxation (McCall 66). One should maintain the upright position with the eyes closed.

Cat-cow pose

To get into this pose, start on your hands and knees. Your hands should be shoulder-width apart, and your knees should be below your hips. Take a deep breath and tilt your head towards the ceiling while also sticking up your pelvis -- this should mimic a "cow." Then, on your exhale, arch your back and bring both your head and pelvis down like a "cat." You can repeat these two motions a few times before moving on. 

Forward fold

This pose is as easy as standing up straight and leaning over to reach for your toes. If you are able, place your hands on the ground. If you are unable to touch your toes, you can do a half-forward fold and grab below your knees. Looking for a challenge? Try reaching around your ankles and holding on. Make sure your back is straight and you are taking deep breaths.

Bridge pose

Start by lying down on your back, legs and arms stretched out and on the ground. Take a deep breath, raise your core off the ground and shift your arms closer to your body to balance. Your knees should be at a 90-degree angle. Your hands can lie flat, or you can bring them together underneath your core. 

An easy pose to transition into after Bridge -- start this pose on your back. Lift your legs to the ceiling and out a little past your shoulders (or however far you can go). Then, grab onto the outside of your feet with both hands. Gently rock left and right to relieve tension in your lower back. 

Legs-up-the-wall

You will need to clear a space beside a wall for this pose. Facing the wall, lie on your back and walk your legs up high or lift your hips with your arms. Your hips can be against the wall or a little away. Once you get in a comfortable spot and you feel like you can balance, stretch your arms out beside you. This pose is great for destressing and improving your circulation . 

Child's pose

You can start this pose by kneeling or getting on your hands and knees. Tuck your feet underneath your hips and bring your head close to the ground. Reach your hands out in front of you, stretching your spine. The further you reach, the better the stretch will be for you.

Seated twist

If you are coming out of Child's pose for this next one, sit back up and extend your legs out in front of you. Cross one leg over the other, pulling the heel of the crossed leg to your outer thigh. With the opposite arm, cross your body and twist yourself, pushing with your elbow on the raised knee. Twist and breathe. Repeat with the other side before moving on. 

Butterfly pose

From a seated position, straighten your posture and press the bottom of both your feet together. Placing your hands on your feet, attempt to press your hips as low as you can to the ground. The lower you go, the bigger the stretch. If you are looking for more of a challenge, move your feet closer to your body. 

Head-to-knee pose

This is a basic pose. Start in a seated position with your legs out in front of you. Bring one foot to the inner thigh of your opposite leg and extend your hands out over your extended leg. Sit up taller, breathe deeply and grab ahold of your foot in front of you. If you can't fully reach your foot, no problem: Grab your ankle or the back of your knee. Lean into the stretch and try to bring your forehead to your knee. Repeat on the opposite side.

I love this long-sleeved option for cooler months and the romper is great for outdoor activities, but this bodycon spaghetti strap dress is by far my favorite of the bunch. 

Available in 11 colors and sizes up to 4XL, it features a built-in bra and inner shapewear that perfectly smooths my hips, thighs, and tummy, highlighting my best features in the process. The shoulder straps are adjustable and shapewear conveniently contains an opening at the bottom for bathroom trips. The simple design is easy to dress up or down, and is one of the primary reasons as to why I wear it out so often. 

Dragon Fit High-waist Pocket Leggings 

I recommend products to my friends and family every day, but no recommendation has received so much positive feedback as these $20 pocket leggings from Dragon Fit. Available in 30 different colors and carried in sizes up to a 3XL, I consider these leggings to be my ultimate Amazon holy grail find. They have a thick, tummy-smoothing waistband, ultra-deep side pockets big enough for a smartphone, and a hidden inner pocket at the back perfect for stashing a pair of keys. Stretchy, buttery-soft, and true-to-size, these leggings get more wear than some of my higher-end ones — and other reviewers seem to agree . 

Crz Yoga Women's Hiking Shorts

Biker shorts and leggings are perfectly fine for hot hikes, but when I want to lean into the campfire-chic aesthetic, I opt for these hiking shorts from Crz Yoga. I already love this brand for their activewear (specifically, this $26 sports tank top ), and these utility shorts are built with the same high-quality fabric and thoughtful details of their other wardrobe offerings. Featuring a removable belt, an elastic waistband, deep zippered pockets, and a 3-inch inseam, these shorts — which are available in 12 different colors — are stretchy, breathable, sweat-wicking, and rip-resistant, meaning they'll hold up well when snagged on sharp branches and thorns. Other shoppers can attest to how stellar these shorts are, with one reviewer reporting that they were the perfect shorts for hiking in Sedona.  

Fitory Women’s Slide Sandals

My leather corkbed Birkenstocks have lasted me such a long time, but considering their $130 price tag, it may be a while longer before I can justify buying another pair. These slides from Fitory, on the other hand, have the same look for a fraction of the cost. I find myself reaching for them just as often as my Birkenstocks — they feel almost identical in fit and quality thanks to their corkbed inner sole, 100 percent leather adjustable straps, and a grippy outsole. My brown pair has looked great with sundresses and shorts alike, and at just $25, I’m tempted to snag them in one of the other four shades, too.

Gihuo Long-sleeved Workout Jacket 

I love Lululemon — my wallet, on the other hand, isn’t quite as big of a fan. So when I found this $22 lookalike version of its viral $118 Define Cropped Jacket , I was over the moon. This long-sleeved workout jacket from Gihou has several features that mirror the Lululemon option, including a full-front zipper, thumb holes, and a snug, body-contouring silhouette. This athletic jacket has accompanied me on multiple flights and workouts, and while I already own three different colors, it’s a versatile piece that I know I’ll be re-purchasing in the near future. 

Ecoparty Sports Bra Tank Top

On days where I just can’t bring myself to wear a bra, I usually end up reaching for this athletic tank top from Ecoparty. It comes with an elastic built-in bra with removable pads for modesty and is made with a soft and breathable polyamide/elastane blend that’s figure-hugging yet stretchy. I’ve thrown each tank I own into my washing machine multiple times, and each one has maintained their shape and feel. Available in eight colors and priced at $15, it’s a travel staple I’ve yet to be let down by.

Hue Mini Crew Socks 

I am incredibly picky when it comes to socks, but I’ve purchased these mini crew socks from Hue multiple times. The length is perfect: not quite as tall as a full crew sock, but certainly taller than an ankle length. Stretchy, soft, and breathable, they’re my go-to socks for going through TSA, hitting the gym, and taking long walks. Available in 11 different color combinations and a convenient six pack, these are the only socks I wear day in and day out. 

Merokeety Long-sleeved Knit Cardigan 

I’ve purchased this lightweight long-sleeved cardigan from Merokeety in three of the 25 available shades at this point — and between you and I, I might just buy it in a few more colors before fall hits since it's up to 25 percent off with an on-site coupon. It’s perfectly cozy without being too heavy, and the slight chunkiness of the knitted fabric adds texture to simple outfits. I also love the super deep pockets in the front, the hooded top, and the ribbed hem detail. It layers well with just about every outfit I pair it with, and has become a transitional must-have in my collection.

Carpetcom Oversized T-Shirt

When I’m wearing bike shorts or workout leggings and want to balance my outfit with something looser, I always end up reaching for this oversized T-shirt from Carpetcom. It’s perfectly baggy, featuring drop shoulder sleeves and a banded crewneck. Made with a soft, stretchy cotton blend, this wardrobe essential comes in 21 colors. Other shoppers appreciate the sizing, too, with one reviewer sharing that it fits exactly like they were hoping it would and that it’s also true to size. 

PrettyGarden Long-sleeved Sweatsuit

Sweatsuits, much like running shoes, can be deceivingly pricy. Perfectly slouchy, lightweight, and soft, this set gets extra points for the 20 different color options.

Chelsie Hill entered the hotel ballroom, gazing in amazement at the 100 women staring back at her. For the lifelong lover of dance, teaching 100 people her choreography was exhilarating. But what overwhelmed her even more than the scale was the realization that she was one with the crowd. Every person was on her level—figuratively and literally.

One of them approached her, tears streaming down her face. “I finally found friends,” said the woman, who had traveled from Canada to Los Angeles to take Chelsie’s dance class. “It’s because of you.” That brought Chelsie back to eight years prior, adjusting to life in a wheelchair and looking for community herself. “The one thing that saved me was finding other people like me,” she says. Now, she’s the one building that community for others.

Chelsie fell in love with dance at age 3 and was competing nationally by age 5. She was the only freshman at her high school near Monterey, California, to make the dance team. Her senior year, she won the California state championship. Chelsie was preparing for nationals when the unthinkable happened in February 2010.

She caught a ride home from a party with a friend, and the car—packed with teens—sped through a flashing yellow sign in a wooded area. It then careened over a curb and down an embankment, hitting a tree head-on at 35 miles per hour. Most of what Chelsie remembers is sensations, or the lack thereof: the pain in her back, which was broken instantly; the paramedics’ tests on her legs, which she couldn’t feel; the deep breaths she took before she was Life Flighted to the nearest trauma center.

Chelsie woke up with her hands tied to the bed and a tube down her throat, knowing something big had happened. She floated in and out of consciousness (and the operating room) for two weeks as friends and classmates lined the hospital hallways to see her. When she finally came to, doctors carefully explained that she had suffered a spinal cord injury and would never walk again.

“I don’t just walk,” Chelsie replied. “I dance.”

“I’m so sorry,” her doctor said. “You’re not going to be able to do that anymore.”

Then, a question: “Can I have kids?”

“Let’s just take one thing at a time,” they said. So that’s what Chelsie did.

Chelsie began intensive rehab, learning how to experience life “from a seated position,” she says. She mourned the end of her senior year and the college experience she thought she’d have. But she also found ways to dance. Her high school team choreographed a wheelchair routine for a pep rally, the first time she’d danced since the accident. But it wasn’t until 2012, when she joined the cast of the Sundance Channel show Push Girls , that she realized she truly wasn’t alone. Filming with other women in wheelchairs who were following their passions inspired her to refine her dance skills and start a team of her own.

In 2014, she moved to Los Angeles and signed up for a beginner hip-hop dance class. Lost in the crowd, every mirror fogged up, Chelsie found it difficult to adapt the choreography while also trying to look as if she knew what she was doing. People stared. She didn’t go back for four months, but her passion for dance eventually won. “When I did get the choreography, that high that you get—I didn’t feel my wheelchair, I didn’t feel different from the others in the room,” she says. “I was hungry for that feeling.”

She started filming her dances and posting them to social media. Nobody she was meeting in the dance community was inviting her to be part of their videos, “so I was like, ‘F*ck it. I’m gonna do it myself,’” she says. “I just wanted to show what I was passionate about.”

Chelsie started inviting other wheelchair-using women to Monterey to dance. It started “purely because I wanted friends”—they crashed at Chelsie’s house—but as she made new friends year after year, the Rollettes, as they called themselves, outgrew their homegrown sleepover.

By 2018, 115 women from 12 countries were flying to L.A. for the Rollettes Experience, a full-blown empowerment weekend for women with disabilities. This summer, there were 309 attendees. For the first time, it included a Boundless Talent Showcase, named in response to the frowned-upon—and limiting—term wheelchair-bound . Chelsie hasn’t profited, by intent. Every dollar goes right back into making the next year’s experience better.

As for the official Rollettes dance team, its members, who are based all over Southern California, practice together twice a month and perform at various events. Chelsie’s dream is to dance at the Paralympics or the Super Bowl. She sees dance as both a workout and a sport—one that requires both physical and mental toughness. “You have to be mindful of your spatial awareness. You have to be mindful of the counts,” she says.

In a way, training for the Rollettes prepared Chelsie for her biggest challenge: motherhood. She got married in 2021, then had a “great” pregnancy, exercising with a trainer until she was 38 weeks. Yet her daughter Jaelyn’s birth earlier this year didn’t go as smoothly. Chelsie’s spinal injury made it dangerous for doctors to place her epidural, but she wasn’t able to dilate sufficiently to give birth unmedicated. After 24 hours of labor, Chelsie was put under general anesthesia, “and when I woke up, I had a baby,” she says. Her life changed in a split second—again. “It was really traumatizing, as it was just like my accident.”

Chelsie’s mental health has wavered through the years, and “it’s never anything about my disability,” she says. “It’s everything that comes along with it.” That includes her dependency on others and the resulting feeling that she’s not quite enough—especially now, as a mom. In June, she posted a “life update” to her Instagram Stories to let her community know that “the smile I’ve been showing you guys isn’t the full truth,” she wrote. “I haven’t been okay and I’m not okay.” She finally understands what people mean when they say that social media is a highlight reel. “You can be both,” she’s realized. “You can be really sad, but you can also be excited for what’s to come.”

Chelsie likens this life chapter to that feeling of showing up to class and nailing the choreo. “Being a new mom has been so hard,” she says. “But the future that I see with my daughter is what I’m hungry for.” She wants Jaelyn to find her own passions. “I want her to know that she can create the life she wants,” she says. “If she sees what her mom has been through, she can conquer the world.”
