The Wisley Golf Club (Church, Garden & Mill Nines)

Mill Lane Ripley, Woking GU23 6QU United Kingdom

Garden Nine Renovation

Wisley Golf Club Church Hole 9

Thirty minutes from London, The Wisley Golf Club stretches across 224 acres of rolling terrain protected by perimeter trees and intersected by the looping River Wey. Designing the first private equity golf club in the United Kingdom here, close to such renowned English clubs as Wentworth and Walton Heath, was both an honor and a challenge for golf course architect Robert Trent Jones II (RTJ II). We set out to create a modern layout that would equal the standard of quality set by these other established clubs.

Membership Owned Club

The Wisley Golf Club is owned entirely by its members. This exclusive golf club offers three distinct nine-hole loops and an extensive practice facility, which is rare in the UK. The lush Garden Nine features a collection of traditional parkland holes playing past lakes, along the river, through trees, and across from the famous Royal Horticultural Gardens. The Church Nine plays adjacent to a historic church, the steeple of which can be glimpsed from several holes. Heather, gorse, and pot bunkers discourage missing the fairways, and the overall strategic requirements invite to play along the ground. The fescue-framed Mill Nine routes across the site of an ancient flour mill in a linksy, rambling style. The river and a tributary come into play on several holes.

The Wisley Golf Club Renovation

Golf courses are living entities, and most require care and attention to keep them fresh and modern and to take advantage of advances in construction and maintenance technology. Over several years, RTJ II will have executed a complete renovation of The Wisley, nine holes at a time.

We improved drainage and playability by filling low spots or connecting them to burns and lakes (which also enhanced strategic challenges), and by replacing the original Bentgrass fairways with grasses more appropriate for the climate. We removed some bunkers and repositioned other features to encourage imagination in the short game. We lined the remaining bunkers with materials not available when we originally designed the layout and upgraded the heavy clay soil. We also restored the greens to their larger, original sizes after years of maintenance had naturally shrunk their perimeters.

Firmer and Faster Play

Overall, our renovation responded to the desire of members to make the course play firmer and faster, and more in the British style overall. This may explain why the Captain and a majority of the players on a recent European Ryder Cup team are members of the club. Don't miss your chance to play at this exceptional golf club.

The Wisley signs major reconstruction contract at GIS

12.39am 23rd February 2010 - Course Development - This story was updated on Sunday, June 13th, 2010

After a series of in-depth meetings at February’s Golf Industry Show in San Diego, The Wisley Golf Club in Surrey, designed by renowned architect Robert Trent Jones II, has signed a major reconstruction project with international golf course specialist Sternberg Golf Services of Sweden. The renovation, which will begin in April, will feature the installation of Sportcrete, a revolutionary engineered bunker-lining and drainage technology.

Established in 1991 and located just across the River Wey from the famous Wisley gardens of the Royal Horticultural Society, The Wisley Club was Robert Trent Jones Jr.’s first golf course in the U.K.

It is widely regarded as one of the top courses in Europe and is home course to a host of Ryder Cup stars including Captain Colin Montgomery and Paul Casey to name but two. The renovation will include a full technical upgrade, reshaping of all features, and extensive drainage and hazard additions. Sternberg Golf Services will also install improved grass varieties that require less irrigation and enable the fairways and greens to play firmer and faster.

The decision to utilize the Sportcrete bunker-lining technology for the full course renovation at The Wisley came after an inspection of the Garden Nine’s bunkers following an installation of the porous lining system earlier last year. Bruce Charlton, President/Chief Design Officer, RTJ II, LLC, remarked:

“I was stunned with the ability of the Sportcrete bunker-lining system to provide extremely rapid drainage of the bunkers during and after a prolonged rain event that placed more than two inches of rain throughout the morning tour of the course, especially since it had rained heavily the night before. The bunkers had not experienced any washouts and had no standing water.

“During this post-design inspection visit, it was agreed to create more visible sand sight lines from the tee shot on a number of bunkers by raising the sand/grass lines. With the Sportcrete lining system, this is a very simple and quick process. It is the only lining system, to my knowledge, that can be accomplished with such little disruption. This efficiency in making revisions to bunkers was paramount in my design decision-making process as we made refinements to the bunkers.”

Wisley's garden gets a new look.

Wisley's Garden gets a new look

Adam Lawrence visits one of the UK’s most exclusive golf clubs and finds that value for money remains important, even at the top end of the market. In much of the world, golf is a ‘top down’ business. Outside Scotland, Ireland and a few other spots, golf remains largely a game played by affluent people at facilities that are relatively exclusive. And around the world, it’s those exclusive, aspirational facilities that set the perceptions of golfers as to what courses should look like. Although the UK is not short of upmarket golf clubs, exclusivity has a slightly different meaning when compared to the rest of the world. For many years, British clubs, even the most famous and revered, have mostly welcomed green fee visitors with, at most, a phone call or letter in advance and the presentation of a letter of introduction to prove they are a member of a golf club. The exclusivity of Sunningdale or St George’s Hill lies in the difficulty of becoming a member, not of playing there as a casual guest.

Elsewhere, and especially in America, private clubs are mostly just that, reserved wholly for the use of members and their guests. And, in another contrast to traditional British clubs, whose joining fees and annual subscriptions are generally relatively low, becoming a member of a top American club often requires a hefty one-off payment as well as fairly large dues. For this increased cost, though, members get privacy. It’s a trade-off.

The American private club model has made sporadic appearances in the UK. For course developers, it is an appealing way of doing business, as, if all goes to plan, the joining fees pay back the cost of building the course, while subscription revenues produce an ongoing profit. Clubs such as Loch Lomond and Queenwood have proved there is a demand for this kind of golf in Britain.

The first of these American-style clubs is a few miles round the M25 from Queenwood. The Wisley, opened in 1991, was designed by the Robert Trent Jones II firm (Kyle Phillips, then Jones’s main associate in Europe, led the project). Located just across the River Wey from the famous Wisley gardens of the Royal Horticultural Society, the 27-hole complex has a membership including many high-profile professional golfers and other well-known public figures.

Wisley is within a few miles of some of southern England’s best-known golf courses: St George’s Hill, Woking and New Zealand in particular are close neighbours. Unlike those courses, though, it’s not built on the sandy soil that made the Surrey heath famous; being on the Wey’s floodplain, the soil is rich, fertile silt.

This silt was, indirectly and partly at least, responsible for the club’s decision to conduct a major renovation. The poor drainage characteristics of the soil, and some less than ideal maintenance choices over the years meant the fairways, originally creeping bentgrass, had become dominated by poa, and with a four inch thatch layer, were always soft.

The new-look Garden nine is very different. It has been grassed with pure fescue – mostly turf, grown specially to Wisley’s specifications by supplier Inturf – and course manager Steve Byrne and his team are committed to keeping it that way. This will be helped by the new five year agreement they have made with turf maintenance products supplier Toro.

The difference between the new turf and the old is startling and can be felt by the feet alone. Step onto the tees or fairways of the Church nine, and one is immediately aware of a high level of sponginess. This is evidently the result either of a great deal of irrigation, or a major thatch problem. One look at the irrigation heads, which appear to be sunk into the surrounding grass and the thatch diagnosis is easy.

This choice of fescue is very significant. In a climate such as the UK, it’s hard to argue that fescue is the most environmentally sound, sustainable grass available, but it hasn’t always been the favourite of upmarket clubs like Wisley. It seems the golf business is really getting the environmental message. The firm surface that fescue provides will also make good use of the design changes, led by RTJ2 president Bruce Charlton, which emphasise short grass around the greens.

Bunker reconstruction also played a major role in the project. The new bunkers, which have been lined with the spray-on Sportcrete porous base product, are generally fairly small, deep and grass-faced. They are real hazards, made all the more so since some are well concealed, which may annoy some of the touring professionals in the club, but struck me as entirely appropriate on a course designed entirely for member play.

No main contractor was employed to run the project. Club general manager Wayne Sheffield, along with Byrne, acted as project manager, dealing directly with the subcontractors, including Contour Golf, who handled the build. Much of the work was done in-house by members of the club’s own greenkeeping crew, and Sheffield says he’s convinced this helped them keep the cost down.

Some of the typical features of the era in which The Wisley was built – now rather unfashionable – have been changed. An example is the RTJ-style ‘runway’ tees, which have been replaced by smaller ones. Teeing grounds are vital at Wisley; all the club’s competitions are mixed sex, so the women’s and men’s tees must align to create a comparable challenge. This is noticeable on several holes, where tees have been positioned at different angles to ask tougher questions of players: the ladies’ tees are not the afterthought they are on many course.

Back to Work, Scottie Scheffler Starts Fast and Hangs on for Opening 67 at PGA

Bob harig | 10 hours ago.

Scottie Scheffler returned from a layoff to shoot 67 on Thursday at the PGA Championship.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — His round was far from perfect, and Scottie Scheffler will undoubtedly want to fine-tune a few things before returning to Valhalla Golf Club on Friday morning.

But when you consider he didn’t play for the past three weeks , was at home for the birth of his first child just eight days ago and is probably due for some sort of letdown, a score of 67 during the first round of the PGA Championship on Thursday was more than adequate.

And starting your round knowing the leader, Xander Schauffele, is already 9 under par ... well, that doesn’t make the situation any easier.

“Yeah, I mean, there's nothing I can do,’’ said Scheffler afterward. “Xander went out and played a great round this morning and I'm not really going to worry about trying to shoot 9 under. I'm just going to go out and try to hit good shots and play my own game.”

Sure, there were some missed opportunities and some squandered shots. But Scheffler was 2 under par before he could work up a sweat and his position on the leaderboard left him just five strokes back of leader Schauffele, in a tie for 12th.

Scheffler pounded a 350-yard drive into the first fairway, then holed his second shot from 167 yards. The ball bounced once and went into the hole for an eagle 2 .

Scottie Scheffler has ARRIVED. #PGAChamp pic.twitter.com/Ky3KNeGNb6 — PGA Championship (@PGAChampionship) May 16, 2024

“It was a stock 9-iron,” Scheffler said. “I was trying to hit it right at the pin because I felt like if I hit it the right way, the shortest it was going to go was on the pin. I felt like it was going to go a little past the pin if anything, and it was nice to see that one go in, obviously.”

Scheffler added a birdie at the 4th hole, bogeyed the 5th, birdied the 8th and 13th before bogeying the 14th and then bouncing back with a birdie at the 15th.

“I'd like to clean up a few of the mistakes,” Scheffler said. “I missed two putts I felt like I should have holed today, but that's going to happen when the greens get a little chewed up.”

The score was his 41st consecutive round of par or better on the PGA Tour. During that streak, Scheffler has shot just one round at even par, and that came during the Houston Open where his streak of 28 consecutive subpar rounds came to an end.

He’s won four of his last five tournaments, including the Masters, two signature events in the Arnold Palmer Invitational and RBC Heritage and the Tour’s flagship tournament, the Players Championship.

Scheffler has been consistently beating the best fields, losing to a single player by a single shot going back to his first victory this year at the Arnold Palmer. He won his second Masters and now has 10 PGA Tour titles.

His place atop leaderboards has become common for the better part of two years but it’s an improvement in putting in the last two months that has pushed him into winning territory more often.

Scheffler’s putting was not as proficient during the first round as he was negative strokes-gained on the day to rank 105th in the field. But he still did enough elsewhere to give himself a chance.

He will tee off at 8:48 a.m. on Friday with a chance to beat the predicted bad weather and post a score. We’ll then have a better idea of his chances to prolong this run of victories.

Tam O'Shanter continues transition from golf course to park. See upcoming changes

JACKSON TWP. − Stark Parks officials hope to make Tam O’Shanter Park a more usable green space for the community.

That's why the park district is planning a driveway and entrance overhaul at the park, as well as the addition of new Americans with Disabilities Act compliant restrooms.

The new driveway and parking lots will be streamlined to avoid traffic and have a more gradual incline to accommodate wheelchairs.

"We had a lot of different goals," said Sarah Buell, capital projects manager at Stark Parks. "We wanted to make the flow better, we wanted to make it more easily accessible."

The former golf course , which has three hiking trails on the 200-acre property, was acquired by the park district at the end of 2018.

The current park utilizes what was left from the golf course, such as the golf cart paths and clubhouse. This year's projects aim to transform the space into more functional parkland.

Last year, the park district started prepping for this year's improvements by clearing trees where the parking lot will be. At the same time, the park district has worked on reforesting efforts on the rest of the property.

The majority of this year's construction is funded through Ohio Public Works Commission Clean Ohio grants.

Tam O'Shanter Park: 'A better layout overall'

The current layout of the park entrance has a central driveway leading from Hills and Dales Road NW toward the clubhouse, with a lower parking lot on the right and an upper lot on the left.

The new plan will relocate the driveway to the corner on the lower parking lot, making the driveway into a continuous curve. The area where the current driveway is located will become more parking and connect the resurfaced upper and lower lots.

"What currently happens that's not great is we get traffic coming off of Hills and Dales, and then you have to stop and make a left or right decision. ... You're not able to enter the park smoothly," Buell said. "So what they did is swooped the entrance a little bit to the east.

"This is kind of a better layout overall for what our needs are," she said. "It's not a golf course anymore, so re-envisioning it to see what's going to work for a park kind of atmosphere."

Stark Parks will be putting the parking lot and driveway improvements out to bid this month or in June. Work will continue into 2025.

Stark Parks intends to keep Tam O'Shanter open as construction is underway. There may be partial closures for safety.

New restrooms planned for inside the clubhouse

Adding accessible restrooms is a big priority for Stark Parks. The new facilities will replace portable toilets that are currently used at the park.

"We go out and ask people how we can improve and what we can do differently," Buell said. "People want more restrooms and no port-a-potties. That's been a big effort we've been trying to make."

There are small restrooms in the clubhouse, but they are not used by the public.

The new restrooms will be large, family-style restrooms with changing tables.

The new accessible restrooms will make the entire clubhouse a more usable space for the park district, Buell said.

"Right now we really can't do public programming because of the accessibility issues," she said. "This gets a lot of visitation from trail users, people coming to walk their dog and coming to hike, and the trails aren't even fully built out yet. We anticipate once you have nicer facilities, that will only increase."

Stark Parks looks ahead toward potential phase 2 improvements

The clubhouse is a colonial style white building. Stark Parks Executive Director Dan Moeglin hopes to someday turn it back to its roots with a rustic barn feel.

The clubhouse was once a barn prior to the property's golf course days.

The front of the building is getting a facelift this year, with more improvements planned as funding becomes available.

"As the demand and the money provides, how do we evolve what is now a colonial looking building back into some type of a rustic barn for programming and activities?" Moeglin said. "We can go back and make this more of a red barn, kind of more historically accurate."

The park district is also considering adding a rear parking lot on the backside of the clubhouse with access to the second floor as part of phase two.

Development also underway for Kirk Schuring Park next door

The connected Jackson Township-owned property, Kirk Schuring Park, will become an active recreation park.

The park will be connected to Tam O'Shanter. The two parks are coordinating trail development.

The township has plans to continue developing its 40-acre property this year.

Last year, the township started development with an earthmoving projects and planted grass on what will become soccer and lacrosse fields. The grass is still coming in, said Michael Vaccaro, administrator and law director for Jackson Township.

The park remains closed as the fields grow. The timeline to open is still unsure.

"It's got barricades, it has a gate because we're trying to really get good growth, get well rooted before we allow play on the field," he said.

He said the next step for the park is putting the driveway and parking areas out to bid. Those projects are anticipated to begin this year.

Blades Brown becomes second straight 16-year-old to make PGA TOUR cut at Myrtle Beach Classic

Shoots back-nine 31 to move inside cutline.

Change Text Size

In his PGA TOUR debut at the Myrtle Beach Classic, played as an Additional Event to the Wells Fargo Championship, Brown opened with a 1-over 72 on Thursday and followed up with a 4-under 67 on Friday to move to 3-under for the tournament and one shot inside the cutline.

Brown described his first round as "all positivity and so much fun," but admitted there were "a few things I need to tighten up."

"He had some crazy bogeys out of nowhere yesterday," said his mother, Rhonda Blades Brown – a former WNBA player and Blades' namesake – while following his round Friday. "But he's only 16 and this is a lot of people. I'm impressed that he's controlling his emotions this well."

"This course has some teeth to it," Brown said Thursday. "I'm not 100 percent used to that yet."

Blades Brown makes birdie on No. 11 at Myrtle Beach

On Friday, it was Brown who showed his teeth. He started with six straight pars – and six greens in regulation – before making a 9-foot birdie on the 16th hole (he started his day on No. 10). He bobbled with a bogey on No. 18, failing to convert on an up-and-down from the greenside bunker.

"A wise man once told me the tournament starts on the back nine Sunday," said the Tennessee native, reflecting on his round. "For me, I know it's not Sunday, but after making bogey on 18, that was my Sunday back nine. I just said, 'Okay, whatever happens happens.' Jack (Bethmann, his caddie) told me, 'You've got to get everything to the hole this time.'"

Invigorated, Brown made birdie putts from 12 and 16 feet at Nos. 1 and 3. He opted to go for the green on the par-5 fourth hole, but his 3-wood landed in the water. After taking a drop, his approach shot went over the green.

Facing a 29-foot chip for par, he said he thought to himself, "Okay, I feel like I can chip this in. ... And then it goes in and I'm like. 'All right, let's get it.'" Brown made back-to-back birdie putts from 15 and 8 feet on Nos. 6 and 7, then parred out for a back-nine 31. He jumped 120 spots in Strokes Gained: Putting, finishing fifth on Friday.

Ahead of the tournament, Brown professed his biggest goal was to make it to the weekend, and his relief was palpable.

"After I made that 2-inch putt on No. 9 (his last hole of the day), I was like 'Yes! I can go chill by the beach,'" he said.

But not before signing autographs for the fan club he had amassed by the end of the day. Supporters lined up by the putting green waiting for him, chanting his name.

Brown expressed his gratitude for the "undevoted love and support" of his family and team. Reflecting on his debut experience, he said: "Yesterday was my first time ever playing a PGA TOUR event, so I was a little nerve-wracked the whole day. Today I felt like I was playing the game that I wanted to play. ... It feels surreal. ... It gives me momentum and courage for future events."

Rhonda brought him back to earth: "I told him if he makes the cut that's two less days he gets to do school," she said.

"Watching him is nerve-wracking. But we're supposed to be having fun, so that's what I'm trying to do."

Michael block is back at the pga championship. here's what to know about the darling of oak hill, share this article.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Brooks Koepka won the 2023 PGA Championship .

But Michael Block won fans’ hearts .

Block captivated those watching on television. He became an adopted son of Rochester, New York, where last year’s PGA Championship was contested at Oak Hill Country Club. And during his final round, he hit one of the tournament’s most memorable shots in recent memory: a hole-in-one at the 15th hole, playing alongside one of the sport’s biggest stars, Rory McIlroy.

“I couldn’t believe that my game held up for four straight days at Oak Hill,” Block said Tuesday. “That golf course is so hard. Just a spectacular golf course, especially when we lost the roll (on the fairways) going into Saturday when it rained. … I couldn’t believe that the 47-year-old club pro’s swing and putting stroke somehow held up during that time.”

One year later, Block returns to the PGA Championship , held at Valhalla Golf Club for the first time since 2014.

More: Michael Block’s 2023 PGA Championship performance was a win for all PGA of America golf professionals

“Valhalla is just a spectacular track,” Block said. “I have not heard one negative thing said from any player or caddie this entire week. Only positives. It’s very fair. … I’m excited to get out there and tee it up.”

Here’s what you need to know about Block heading into Thursday’s opening round:

What is Michael Block known for?

2023 PGA Championship

Block finished in a tie for 15th at the 2023 PGA Championship. It was the best showing by a PGA professional (those who teach the game) since Lonnie Nielsen tied for 11th at Inverness in 1986 — and the third-best all time.

Has Michael Block ever won on the PGA Tour?

No, Block has never won a PGA Tour tournament. Block has appeared in 30 PGA Tour events, making five cuts. His best finish was the T15 at the PGA Championship — the only cut he made in six tries during the 2022-23 season.

But he’s no stranger to success elsewhere, as he’s won the Southern California PGA Championship four times.

Has Michael Block competed in more than one PGA Championship?

Yes, this year will mark his sixth appearance in the PGA Championship. Prior to last year, he never had made the weekend at the PGA.

Coincidentally, the first time he played in the PGA was the 2014 edition … also at Valhalla.

“2014 was great,” Block said, “and the course has, I think, gained a couple hundred yards (since then). … But it’s going to — it will be a good time. Just keep it in the short grass, for sure.”

Has Michael Block played at Valhalla Golf Club prior to this year?

Aside from his 2014 PGA appearance, Block came to the Bluegrass State last year and put on a record-setting performance during a practice round . Block carded a 9-under 63, matching the score shot by José María Olazábal during the 2000 PGA Championship.
