'Vaashi' — A subtle legal drama that strikes a chord | Movie Review

Princy Alexander

Nothing in life is really black and white. Often our seemingly colourful lives are marred by shades of grey. 'Vaashi', starring Tovino Thomas and Keerthy Suresh, is a simple attempt at exploring such disconcerting trends, told from the perspective of two lawyers who also happen to love each other.

Ebin Mathew and Madhavi, the two lawyers, are trying to get a break in their career. Both squabble most of the time but fall in love with each other. Life gets complicated when they end up at two ends of a case that will determine their futures.

At the start, the story unfolds slowly but steadily, as if the debutant director, Vishnu Raghav, wanted to take his own time to familiarize us with the characters before positioning them on opposite sides. He has done a good job with that, giving ample space for Keerthy Suresh and Tovino Thomas to perform for them, so as to make us fall in love with their characters. The chemistry between the duo is also undeniable.

Unlike most Malayalam legal dramas, 'Vaashi' is more subtle. The treatment is also quite fresh. It does not focus on the courtroom alone, nor does it portray aggressive lawyers who tend to wax eloquently about social issues or incidents, just to get across a point. The case, which becomes the bone of contention for Madhavi and Ebin, both at court and at home, is also quite different from the ones that have been considered in Mollywood in recent times.

The makers of the film have done their bit to educate us about various aspects of a particular law, bringing in some relevant points from time to time. Though there is a lag in some scenes (probably due to the lack of drama in a few areas) and some loopholes in the script, the film is able to surpass these challenges, especially thanks to the excellent performance of the actors.

Keerthy Suresh is making a major return to Mollywood through this movie and her performance as Madhavi establishes she is a gem that needs to be utilised in the industry more, provided, she decides to stay.

Tovino delivers as the young and handsome advocate Ebin Mathew, who comes across as an easy-going yet professional lawyer, who is also a romantic at heart.  However, for an actor who has given us some impressive, jaw dropping performances, this is clearly not his best. It's fun to watch Baiju play the jovial advocate Satheesh Mulloor, a friend and confidante to both Ebin and Madhavi. Rony David as the shrewd businessman Jose also does a fine job, while the other actors Maya Vishwanath, Nandu, Kottayam Ramesh impress with their performances.

Though the sound effects are jarring at times, the songs by Kailas Menon and written by Vinayak Sasikumar are pleasing. Overall, 'Vaashi' leaves an impression on us, giving us some time to think about the case in point without forcing the subject upon the viewer.

Vaashi Movie Review: Tovino, Keerthy Suresh anchor a fairly stimulating court drama

Rating: ( 3 / 5).

Vaashi opens with a blurry shot of the judge who will pass the verdict on a case that becomes the film's focal point. But even when we see his face, we are shielded from this man's background or thought processes. His final call is everything. Whatever choice he makes has to be accepted, regardless of what the actual truth may be. Everyone else, particularly the two lawyers on opposite sides of the case, can only offer arguments. But, eventually, it's the audience who has to make a judgement once the court proceedings are over because one of the closing shots in Vaashi is open to interpretation. It registers that may-or-may-not-be effect.

Vaashi is a film that, I felt, makes for a lighthearted companion piece to the recently released Jana Gana Mana in that it makes valid points on perspectives, ethics, and the issue of right and wrong. It shows us a particular incident which, in the light of the #MeToo events in the Malayalam film industry, becomes much more relevant because it brings up the matter of consent. Do all its points come across clearly? Not quite.

Film: Vaashi Director: Vishnu S Raghav Cast: Tovino Thomas, Keerthy Suresh, Kottayam Ramesh, Vinu Mohan However, there are several interesting ideas in the screenplay that, I thought, worked well in the film's favour, most notably that of having a married couple spar in the courtroom for a case of sexual exploitation. What's more interesting is having the wife defend the man while the husband defends the woman. The man and woman have their versions of what transpired between them, and Madhavi (Keerthy Suresh), an assertive and self-declared feminist, believes that the truth is on the man's side. Meanwhile, the diplomatic and seemingly more sensitive Ebin (tovino Thomas) accepts the woman's version. For him, she can't fail because "other women will be reluctant to come forward" in future. Here's the biggest complication standing in their way: Family. I liked how the film addresses conflict of interest when one's family members are involved. The situations where Ebin and Madhavi try to navigate around unwelcome requests and parents' demands are amusing. It got me thinking about how complicated the personal lives of lawyers, policemen, or anyone involved in law enforcement must be. Vaashi finds Ebin and Madhavi as "inexperienced" professionals at first, but Ebin gets a leg up when he gets promoted to a public prosecutor upon the recommendation of a relative. This makes things awkward for Ebin and Madhavi because when the said relative asks for a favour, Madhavi doesn't budge. Brother-in-law or not, facts are facts. Ebin would've reacted differently in this case because he often displays reluctance to offend family members. Family also is a complication when it comes to the central issue -- of the man who supposedly duped the woman with the promises of marriage -- the details of which Ebin and Madhavi examine in court. Everyone is connected to somebody. Vaashi is most stimulating when it finds parallels in the dynamics of Ebin and Madhavi and some details of the case being discussed, like when Madhavi mentions how communication problems can cause one to assume what the other person didn't think, amongst other things. Moments that sometimes cause the two to have a debate inside the courtroom. In one such instance, the judge reminds them they are not participating in a television debate. Kottayam Ramesh as the judge, Baiju as a mutual advocate friend of Ebin and Madhavi, and Rony David as the favour-seeking relative bring much-needed levity and balance whenever things seem on the verge of going off the rails. There are places in the screenplay where its energy dips a little -- particularly in the third act -- but picks up whenever Tovino, Keerthy, Kottayam Ramesh or Baiju are on screen. Although the film gives the impression that it doesn't want to take any sides, some of its intentions come across as muddled. I'm not sure including the line, "There is no right and wrong; only perspectives and shades of grey," was a good idea. Maybe we can dismiss it as the characters' viewpoint, but can we apply that to genuine instances of sexual abuse? Can we imagine someone using that line to justify their misdeeds? Yes, Vaashi worked for me considerably, but I don't think two hours is enough to say with complete certainty that all its points are valid. Thankfully, this is not a film that's heavy on emotions, even when Ebin and Madhavi's marital harmony is affected. And I was glad the screenplay didn't include parents who make a big deal of the interfaith marriage of Ebin and Madhavi. Although they express slight reservation initially, they take it in the right spirit later. Undoubtedly, it's the chemistry of Tovino and Keerthy which chiefly keeps the film afloat. I appreciated the playful situations and the silent treatment moments in equal measure. These are two sensible and sensitive individuals who try to keep their profession out of their personal space but are not always successful. Isn't that the case with most people?

Vaashi

Courtroom dramas are always intense but, how often are they moving enough to be reflective on your personal lives? Well, Netflix’s latest South Indian release Vaashi does exactly that. Directed by Vishnu G. Raghavi, the screenplay for the film is written by Janiz Chacko Simon and Raghavi himself.

The cast features Tovino Thomas as Ebin and Keerthy Suresh as Madhu as the main leads alongside Kottayam Ramesh, Maya Menon, Baiju Santhosh, Rony David Raj, Anu Mohan, Anagha Narayanan amongst others. The film is produced by G Suresh Kumar along with Menaka Suresh & Revathy Suresh and has a runtime of 123 minutes.

– Netflix’s Vaashi Review Does Not Contain Spoilers –

Vaashi: A World Painted in Grey

Netflix’s Vaashi tells the story of Ebin and Madhu, two lawyers struggling with their own decisions and dilemmas in life. The two friends, who also happen to turn into partners during the course of the movie are taken aback by a case that puts both of them on different ends inside the court. As prosecution and defence, Ebin and Madhu fight a case that not only changes the course of their clients’ lives but, also affects them in deep and inevitable ways.

With the struggle of ego and power at its core, Vaashi gives a different edge to the trope of a courtroom drama offering us characters who are rigid but, understanding and a case where no one is right or wrong.

Raghavi’s latest film is a treat not only due to the intense courtroom scenes shared between Suresh and Thomas but, also due to the close inspection of the lawyers’ lives. Unlike, most courtroom dramas that make the plaintiff and the defendant at the centre, this film revolves around everyone associated with the case, closing on mostly the lawyers at play.

Tovino Thomas is one talented genius whose acting skills lift up the entire story. He is effortless in his portrayal of Ebin, going through a huge spectrum of emotions and making us invest in him. Keerthy Suresh is a force to behold. She imbibes an aura that is both charismatic as well as serious. Together as Ebin and Madhu, the chemistry these two actors share is overwhelming and hits just the right notes to aid the tune of the tale.

However, what shines the best in this film is its screenplay which is intricate and thoughtful. On the surface, it might just look like another courtroom drama trope that we are accustomed to from films like Section 375 or Pink. However, as the story progresses the underlying themes of consent, desire, partnership, marriage and innocence all thrive together to deliver a wholesome narrative that is fresh, unique and memorable.

Until the end of the case, the audience will surely be pinning their case on one candidate or the other but, with the eventual revelation, the reality of the grey world we live in comes to life. The ending dialogue of the film shared between Suresh and Thomas of the world not always being black and white, does not only puts the perfect conclusion to the story but, also provokes you to look around and know both sides to every coin.

Vaashi: Final Verdict

Irrespective of being a drama that deals with court, crime and concise, by the end of the day Vaashi is a risk-free, light watch to tune into. It does not painfully draw you to look into the mirror but, leaves you with the afterthought of what if you did delve deeper into the nuances of life to understand a tale better.

From the performances to the screenplay as well as the direction and the rightly added music that makes the story more fleshed out, Vaashi is the drama that puts society into perspective. It explores the areas of assault and feminism but, also shows men in a different light, the light we are rarely fortunate to witness in the world of cinema.

Vaashi movie review: An engaging courtroom-cum-family drama elevated by the chemistry between Tovino, Keerthy

Story: Advocates Ebin and Madhavi have conflicting personalities, but each are driven to prove their worth in their profession. After Madhavi goes independent and Ebin is stated as public prosecutor, their first big case pits them against each other. To make matters complex is their impending wedding. What ramifications will the case have on their personal lives and can their marriage endure it all?

Review: A crucial sequence in the second half of Vaashi has Baiju Santosh’s character calling the protagonists – Ebin (Tovino Thomas) and Madhavi (Keerthy Suresh) – in what was initially planned as a meet to broker peace between them before it goes out of control. While the get-together adds fuel to their face-off later, it also serves to show the conflicting personalities of the duo. Ebin is the proud but diplomatic kind while Madhavi is the frank, straight-talker. It’s this clash of personalities that make actor-turned-filmmaker Vishu G Raghav’s debut directorial engaging for most parts.

The film is a great blend of a family and courtroom drama, even though the latter portions does lack the zing because it focuses on its lawyers rather than the case itself. Vishnu, who has also scripted the film, gets the first two acts spot on – capturing the duo’s personalities and making the audience care for both of them equally before pitting them against each other.

We get to see how both Ebin and Madhavi are hungry to prove themselves in their careers first, trying to get their big break. Ebin gets an easy way out, courtesy of a family member who helps him secure a job as a public prosecutor. Madhavi, however, has it more difficult, and the film addresses issues of how gender and age are perceived as signs of weakness in the profession. In a scene where Madhavi is informed that Ebin’s parents are coming to see her mother for a wedding proposal, the former bursts out saying she had never discussed it with Ebin and wants to marry only after she gets her career sorted. In another sequence, after the wedding, she says that the day was tough for her and she endured it all only for Ebin. These are great touches in the film that shows how modern relationships are. But these aren’t just used as embellishments as Vishnu later ties these up with the case that the two would be battling in court.

But once the focus shifts to the case and the court, it does become a bit of a mess – especially the third act where the filmmaker wants to do what’s right but goes about it in a haphazard manner that leaves much to be desired. This despite the closing statements of the protagonists that come off as forced. The courtroom sequences in the film – though subdued and portrayed in a realistic manner where the lawyers twist the words and incidents in favour of their clients – are presented well. The case too is presented with the right amount of sensitivity. This despite the movie repeatedly harping on the fact that how personal principles and ethics most often don’t find a place in the life of lawyers.

Tovino Thomas and Keerthy Suresh in a still from Vaashi

A recurring layer in the film is about communication between people and how it can at times be misconstrued. The complications due to the interfaith marriage as well as those that arise due to the relatives present a few fun moments. Both Tovino and Keerthy, through their performances, have brought this element of communication out without really pinpointing it. Tovino as Ebin is assertive but at the same time flexible. His subtle expressions at the court as well as outside, when Madhavi is with the accused’s sister, registers well. Keerthy too makes a strong comeback in Malayalam with the role of Madhavi, who is bold enough to claim her space in her professional as well as personal life. The lead duo’s good chemistry, however, does also take away from their intensity when they are engaged in an ego clash. This is also why one would feel that final half lacks the weight because you tend to care for both equally and never end up taking sides or bothering about who emerges on top in the wager. The supporting cast of Anu Mohan, Baiju Santosh, Rony David and Anagha Narayanan do their parts well despite the limited scope of performance.

image_item

The three songs in the film, composed by Kailas Menon, are placed well and doesn’t disrupt the flow of the movie that is just 2 hours and 10 minutes long – making it a breezy watch even in theatres.

Verdict: Unlike some of the recent courtroom dramas, Vishnu G Raghav beautifully blends the family drama aspect into the court scenes, making it appealing to all kinds of audience. Even though the movie does lose its focus in the third act, it’s still engaging while it lasts due to the great chemistry between its leads – Tovino and Keerthy.

'Vaashi' Review: A Commendable Yet One-Time Watch Courtroom Drama

Vaashi is vishnu raghav's debut film as a director in south cinema., 'vaashi' review: a commendable, yet one-time watch courtroom drama.

Three years after the Hindi courtroom drama Section 375 hit the screens, backed by power-packed performances from Akshaye Khanna and Richa Chadda, comes Vaashi , a Malayalam film with a similar plot. However, notwithstanding the common factors, Vaashi also doubles up as a family drama, in what turns out to be an engrossing watch without resorting to melodrama.

There is some clever tinkering of the basic premise, especially with gender roles of the lawyers reversed, making things more interesting and palatable at once. And both the lead actors are up to the task, especially Keerthy Suresh making a comeback in Malayalam catching the viewers by surprise in what can be termed as the perfect homecoming. While Tovino Thomas reminds you of his brooding and cocky self from Naradan at times, Keerthy Suresh is convincing and relatable at the same time, making you want to root for her.

Actor-turned-director Vishnu G Raghav makes a decent directorial debut by keeping things simmering for the length of the film, although you wish he had taken things a bit slower in the beginning. The court scenes could have done with a bit more punch and brevity with additional research and legal expertise roped in. Nevertheless, Vaashi doesn’t lag despite the run-time of over 150 minutes.

In one scene, after a minute-long submission by Tovino Thomas before the judge, Keerthy Suresh responds to it in Malayalam which might strike some viewers as odd. This reviewer was quickly reminded of a young lady lawyer-friend recalling how some senior judges in the High Court got intimidated when arguments were made in a regional language instead of the usual English, and how it was deliberately resorted to as a tool to balance power.

Vaashi is Vishnu Raghav's debut film as a director in south cinema.

A still from Vaashi .

There is no preaching and the tone is progressive throughout the film. It is unclear whether one of the seeming parallels between the central plot and the personal lives of the leads are really intended or just a matter of coincidence. The climax seems somewhat odd and a bit of a compromise. Having to resort to judicial subjectivity to justify a verdict would only mean that parsing of the law was inadequate in the first place. Also, the personal equation and ego of the leads take over the courtroom drama by the end.

Keerthy Suresh is the best thing about the film, looking every bit professional and carrying herself convincingly.

Making a comeback after eight years (discounting the cameo in Marakkar: Lion of the Arabian Sea) Keerthy is a much improved version of herself than her initial outings in Mollywood.

There is no attempt to play the gallery and she makes a good pairing with Tovino Thomas, who should probably cut down on work to make his characters unique and memorable.

Baiju Santhosh plays the other significant role in the film as a senior lawyer, striking up a great camaraderie with the leads anchoring the film. Rony David, Vanitha Krishnachandran, Suresh Kumar, Sreelakshmi and Kottayam Ramesh as the magistrate have performed their relatively minor parts well. And there is Anu Mohan, sporting a stock expression throughout, making his character darker than it was probably intended.

Vaashi is a commendable attempt from a debutante filmmaker. The technical side is adequate, cinematography aesthetic and the music blends in well into the narrative. Vaashi could have been slightly more gripping with additional chiseling of the script, but overall it’s definitely a one-time watch.

Young and enthusiastic lawyers, Ebin and Madhavi, fight for the two opposing parties in a sensitive case in writer-director Vishnu Raghav's Vaashi. In the case, a young woman accuses a young man of raping her with the false promise of marrying her. Now, what makes the case interesting at a script level is that Ebin (Tovino Thomas) and Madhavi (Keerthy Suresh) are newlyweds. While the couple start their relationship promising to keep work matters at bay, the lines between their professional life and personal life start to blur as they enter the case. How the couple manages the situation constitutes the plot of Vaashi.

Vaashi has an interesting approach to courtroom drama cinema. A good part of the movie happens in the courtroom while the rest takes place in the house of the lawyers. The courtroom drama is interesting enough as both legal representatives come up with sound arguments for a verdict favorable to their client. Because Keerthy and Tovino are stars, it would not be a good idea to make it easy for one of them to win the case. Usually, what happens in a film of this genre is that a negative lawyer character with sarcasm represents the opposition side. But there is hardly any sarcasm or an easy route to victory in Vaashi. It respects the intelligence of the viewer, handles a sensitive issue deftly enough, and does not hurt our sentiments. However, the makers do not quite treat the courtroom drama with enough seriousness.

This kind of a film works best when the two lawyers are involved deeply in their case. In Vaashi, however, neither Tovino's character nor Keerthy Suresh's character goes deeply into the case. When you watch them enact their roles, they do not seem as invested in the case as some of their lines may suggest. This is not entirely the fault of the actors, as the makers played a large part in it. The makers keep telling us that the lawyers do not want their professional life to enter their personal life even as the lines begin to blur. Keeping the two aspects of our life separate, may be a good idea to put forth, but courtroom genre cinema does not work that way. During a highly intense case, like the one in Vaashi, actors should maintain equally high levels of intensity. Things are a bit too easy on the eye here, or a bit too vanilla.

It does not help that the makers maintain a light approach to the domestic aspect of the film. Even as the ego clash between the couple reaches a mildly intense state, you get the impression that there is a happy resolution around the corner.

Now, that is not to say that Vaashi is unwatchable. It is a consistently engaging film with fine performances. Anu Mohan and Anagha Narayanan put in competent performances as the accused and the plaintiff, respectively. Baiju Santhosh and Rony David offer sporadic moments of laughter as well. Tovino and Keerthy make for a fine couple. A lot of their early exchanges are really enjoyable. They are lovely to watch, and it is hard not to watch the film when they are on screen. I just wish to see them in a different film.

‘Vaashi’ movie review: Never soars above the middling, watchable category

At the centre of the film is an ego clash between newly-appointed public prosecutor ebin (tovino thomas) and defence lawyer madhavi (keerthy suresh).

S R Praveen

A still from ‘Vaashi’

Courtroom dramas, which Malayalam cinema has been churning out in considerable numbers in recent years, often fills one with dread due to the possibilities of the protagonists indulging in long-winded dialogues, which have no place in an actual court. In Vaashi , the judge, exasperated by a shouting match between two advocates, tells them that it is not a news channel discussion, but a courtroom.

The film, directed by Vishnu .G. Raghav, also sticks to the judge's diktats for most parts, for the courtroom scenes are not really over-the-top. An attempt is made to stick to the purely legal arguments, rather than use the court as a pulpit for delivering a rousing speech. At the centre of the film is an ego clash between newly-appointed public prosecutor Ebin (Tovino Thomas) and defence lawyer Madhavi (Keerthy Suresh). The married couple face a testing time when they end up on either side in a case involving manufactured consent.

Although only a small percentage of incidents involving sexual assault of women in the country are getting registered, there has been much discussion on how laws intended to protect women can possibly be misused. Vaashi , just like the 2019 Hindi film Section 375 , also attempts to add to the conversation, with a case involving the alleged rape of a woman by her senior at work, after promising to marry her. The case and its trajectory here too are almost similar to Section 375, but what differentiates the two films is the lawyer couple and their ego clashes.

The script, by the director himself, for the most part alternates between the courtroom and the domestic situation of the two lawyers. Some of the supporting cast, especially Baiju as their close friend from the legal fraternity and Rony David as Ebin’s influential brother-in-law, spice up these parts. But the conflict between the couple gets a somewhat lazy treatment, almost as if the writer did not want to create too much trouble between them. This is evident in how quickly it is resolved, without much of an effort.

It would almost seem that this ego clash part, between two people in the same profession who have to go against each other for personal glory, was created just for the sake of novelty. The case they are dealing with does not have the kind of heft to keep things engaging for two hours. This rather lighter, risk-free approach ensures that the film coasts along comfortably, but never soars above the middling, watchable category. The question of how the handful of cases of misuse of the law gets much hype over the much larger number of unreported, as well as actual cases of assaults of women, also remains.

Ita njan ee realtionshipsilku pokate velata vallicase anu (i swear). I found their relationship with work culture and how instances of their case resembled instances of their daily life (shoehorned ayirunu enu paranjal njan tarkikilla) more interesting than the legal proceedings. Tovino's and keerthi's relationship actually felt genuine, ento kanuvan valare comfortable ayirunu. Legal stuff oke its like chila aspects i like, chilatu i don't. Also i don't mean anything ill, but keerthi suresh makeup edak was soo over that i legit had trouble distinguishing her neck from her face. Vaashi the movie deals with woman, who can’t control anger and stfu. If woman stfu= society happy.

Idk why this movie was weirdly comfortable…also idk, this kinda tells men to be more careful…gangagandharvane polle padam tries to blame to view society as well as legal constitutional issues…is it particularly against woman? Not really. But does it feel like it putting a narrative in front of the audience? Yes.

I can see this getting a lot of hate in future, cuz the movie might appear like it does indirectly blame the woman for what happend. Social media yil kore wannabe vakeelmar ukathukondum, avr “reading between the lines” enna kala kayivasham vechathu kodum, ithinu oru bhudimuttum kanilla..

And yeah…padam theatre il release akande oru kariyavum undayirunila…

Vaashi never rises above watchable , but its core premise is refreshing. While the film has a breezy first half which portrays the chemistry between the leads (Tovino & Keerthy), the second half which covers a larger portion of the courtroom drama lacks a certain dramatic intensity. The case presented is one of contemporary significance, and the performances do not disappoint. But somewhere along the way, the the writing loses its grip on the viewer. Ego clashes aren't exactly new to Malayalam cinema, and neither are courtroom dramas, but the challenge for director Vishnu Raghav was to come up with a compelling, cogent plot with sufficient texture. He succeeds to some extent and it isn't easy to pick sides here. That being said, the film's central conflict (i.e. the ego clash) is resolved rather easily while the legal tussle concludes in predictable fashion.

Pretty solid writing for most parts but underwhelming execution and melodramatic scenes in the second half tones down the impact the movie was trying to bring. The climax was also decent which made it an overall watchable court room drama even though the court room bits were weak for the majority of the movie.

Watched FDFS.

A fairly watchable courtroom/family drama centred around ego clashes in relationships. Tovino, still nursing the  Mathan  hangover, seemed rather miscast here. Keerthy Suresh, on the other hand, delivers a fine performance. The narrative takes the safest route possible, when it comes to the politics it’s based upon. Strictly average, though we could see quite a few nice touches of brilliance here and there in flashes. What this otherwise decent debut effort really needed was some better writing.

P. S.  There’s no connection whatsoever, apart from the obvious courtroom setting, I know, but still, it kinda reminded me of  Section 375  in parts.

I get confused sometimes by the many versions I have of myself. For instance I have an office version , a student version, a dumb version as well as an intellectual version then there is an artist version, a writer version and many more. So sometimes I don't know which version I should be or exist in. Now, when I say that I liked this movie, it is a lie. But also I didn't like this movie and that is also a lie.

But Tovino can act like Tovino in many of his movies and that is the one thing that I learned from this movie - one should act the same everywhere. ½ star for tovino acting ½ star for my acting.

P.s : this is meant to be sarcasm and it is lie. May be not

Pasting an online review that I read here. They said it more beautifully than I ever could.

Malayalam cinema has a way of trusting the audience to understand a story with all of its nuances, instead of spoon-feeding it to them. The characters were not glorified, there was no clear right or wrong, and the lack of overly dramatic background music, all of which let the audience interpret the story in their own way. Every single one of the characters has obvious flaws. But it is how they are acknowledged without being judged that creates the magic of “Vaashi.” Ebin and Madhu were constantly aware of the moral choices the other was making, but they understood them as part and…

Feminism, but from the masculine point of view.

The movie reveals that the film fraternity is yet to have an idea on relationships, consent, sex, abuse, assault and feminism. It's high time for male scribes who venture to feature complex female characters who contribute significantly to the story considering the market trend, to understand women, their thought on sex, life, love, marriage, feminism and companionship. The movie's emotional layer manages to connect a chord with the audience, while the legal drama in the script couldn't achieve the high it demanded.

In the pleasant bits of the film, where we are witnessing the bonding between the central characters, Vishnu G Raghav definitely manages to put the movie in that likable zone without any cringe stuff. The problem is when the gear shifts to that serious tone. They have presented a case that looks like a highly murky one. Rather than showing how justice can be a bit grey and tricky in some cases, the effort is to make the case black and white by presenting new witnesses and confessions. And there is a bit where one of the lawyer characters talks about feminism to justify their client just after knowing that he/she wasnt really innocent. Towards the end, when things are becoming difficult for everyone on the screen regarding whom to support, we as an audience cant really feel the intensity of that dilemma. (more)

‘Vaashi’ Ending Explained: Who Wins The Case Between Madhu And Ebin?

Vaashi Ending Explained Tovino Thomas as Ebin and Keerthy Suresh as Madhu

And this is how you make the story of the aftermath of “I do” interesting. It is a common enough joke that two lawyers in a relationship will always be at loggerheads. “Vaashi” shows us exactly how. Ebin and Madhu are two hard-working, self-made lawyers who fall in love with each other and get married. But when they find themselves on opposite sides of a case, it proves to be a defining test for their relationship. How they navigate this forms the crux of “Vaashi.”

Can we just say how the makers of the film did a fantastic job with the casting? Keerthy Suresh’s eyes deserve an award of their own. And Tovino Thomas brings such an effortless quality to the storyline. But the main hero of the story was the marriage between the characters. That is what “Vaashi” was about. Let us see what happens in it.

Spoilers Ahead

How Do Ebin And Madhu Fight The Case Of Anusha And Gautham?

It starts with Madhu and Ebin as two lawyers, who always seem to be at loggerheads. Ebin comes from a well-connected political family and is trying to make something of himself independently. Madhu is struggling to establish her own identity in a male-dominated law firm. They have a common friend—a senior by the name of Satheesh Mulloor—and the three of them have a habit of eating lunch together. Satheesh tells Ebin that a certain office space is available for rent should he be interested in it, but Ebin is not sure if he can take the plunge and asks for some time. Meanwhile, Madhu has left her job after she was unfairly blamed for a clerk’s misplacing of documents. She now wants to litigate independently. Madhu asks Satheesh if she can rent the office space he was talking about, prompting Ebin to say that he wants that space too. Satheesh tells them that there is enough room for both of them, and they can share it. Ebin and Madhu agree reluctantly, but once they rent the space, the friendship between them strengthens, and they slowly start falling in love.

One day, Ebin decides to confess to her. But instead of being direct, he comes up with a story as to how he needs to go on a date with an arranged match his mother has found for him. Madhu is nonchalant and tells him that she herself is looking to go on a similar date. Later that evening, while talking to each other, Madhu playfully tells him that she had seen through his lies and that she also had strong feelings for him. This marks the beginning of their relationship.

A few days later, Ebin’s parents tell him that they want him to get married, which is when he tells them about his relationship with Madhu. His parents say that they anticipated this but are hesitant because of their different religious backgrounds. However, they can get past this easily enough. Madhu, on the other hand, is hesitant as she is not settled into her career. Ebin has started a job as a public prosecutor after his brother-in-law, Jose, pulled some strings, placing him way ahead of his peers. Madhu has yet to catch up, and this plays into her fears. Ebin asks her to take some time and think it over.

In the meantime, she gets a case for a family friend of hers. Gautham, the friend’s brother, has been accused of sleeping with a girl under the false promise of marriage, which amounts to rape. Madhu needs to prove him innocent. The same case goes to Ebin, and he needs to prove that Gautham is guilty. The couple are at the opposite ends of the case, and neither are happy about it. As the case progresses, there is an uneasy silence between them regarding it, which they ignore for the sake of their relationship. They get married and settle into their new life, with them still walking on eggshells around each other.

It all comes to a boiling point when one day, Jose asks Madhu to come to help him with a particular case in a police station. Madhu tells him that her coming to the police station would be of no use and that they can just solve the matter in court. Later that day, Ebin tells her that she should have just gone as that would have reassured Jose of the situation. But Madhu is adamant and says that such unnecessary diplomacy is not her forte. This causes further tension between the couple, and the issues that they had ignored so far come closer to the surface.

Satheesh advises Ebin to come to his house for dinner to spark a reconciliation between them. But things take a turn for the worse, and Ebin and Madhu end up challenging each other that if Ebin loses the case, he would quit his job as the public prosecutor and return to their previous office.

‘Vaashi’ Ending Explained- Who Wins The Case Between Madhu And Ebin?

As the case progresses, the distance between the couple increases. They start going to the office separately and even sleeping in different rooms. The case itself gets messier as Gautham admits to Madhu that he was aware of Anusha’s feelings for him. Anusha admits to Ebin that she doesn’t want to put Gautham behind bars for so long.

At the penultimate hearing in the court, Saira, the common friend between Gautham and Anusha, comes to give her statement. She says that while she was aware of Anusha’s feelings, she did not know if Gautham knew of them as well. This changes things for the prosecution, as it takes away the proof of whether Gautham was manipulating Anusha or not. Ebin figures out that this has happened because of Anusha and not Madhu. He asks her the reason for it, and she tells him that she never clearly spoke about her feelings to Gautham. Also, the day after they slept together, both of them should have spoken to each other at least once instead of letting it get to this point. She is regretful of the consequences of their lack of communication.

Later that day, Satheesh advises Ebin to not let this conflict get the better of them and to reconcile with his wife. Ebin does so. Like old times, he follows Madhu on his bike instead of taking his car. Once they reach their house, they hug each other while shedding tears that reveal the pain caused by the struggle they have been going through.

The next day in court, the judge states that while it couldn’t be proved by the prosecution that Gautham had actually promised marriage to the victim, he had definitely had relations with her when she was drunk, and that made him a culprit. For that reason, he was sentenced to 10 years in jail. Following this, we see Madhu and Ebin decide that since they will continue dealing in these shades of grey, it is best that they don’t let it get the better of their relationship. It also turns out that Madhu plans on appealing the case in the High Court. It is a bittersweet ending, one that makes us understand relationships without rose-colored glasses and what it means to make them work beyond our identity as individuals.

Final Thoughts: What Works For ‘Vaashi’?

Malayalam cinema has a way of trusting the audience to understand a story with all of its nuances, instead of spoon-feeding it to them. The characters were not glorified, there was no clear right or wrong, and the lack of overly dramatic background music, all of which let the audience interpret the story in their own way. Every single one of the characters has obvious flaws. But it is how they are acknowledged without being judged that creates the magic of “Vaashi.” Ebin and Madhu were constantly aware of the moral choices the other was making, but they understood them as part and parcel of their professions and kept their judgment of that away from their relationship. Their tussle came from a clash of egos, not from difference in ideologies. Recognizing this was what made it easy for them to resolve their differences. This is what a movie about relationships should look like, and we would definitely recommend this to everyone.

“Vaashi” is a 2022 Indian Court-Room Drama film directed by Vishnu Raghav.

  3. Vaashi movie review: An engaging courtroom drama

The movie is successful in portraying our justice system which may appear to be fair and objective, but has a very subjective and personal level of interference at least subconsciously. 4. Vaashi Movie Review: Tovino, Keerthy Suresh anchor a fairly stimulating

While the get-together adds fuel to their face-off later, it also serves to show the conflicting personalities of the duo.
