'The Teacher' Movie Review:

‘The Teacher’ Malayalam movie review: Amala Paul drama tells a hard-hitting story

Director vivek’s film on sexual violence stars amala paul, who shows maturity as an actor, but the same cannot be said for the writing of the sensitive subject.

December 02, 2022 06:29 pm | Updated 06:32 pm IST

Amala Paul in ‘The Teacher’

Amala Paul in ‘The Teacher’

The Teacher is not easy to watch, films about sexual violence seldom are. What is unsettling is that the perpetrators are barely out of school, and the victim/survivor is a teacher they meet during an inter-school competition. Even more disturbing is their nonchalance about the assault, which they have recorded.

The film, directed by Vivek, pivots around Devika (Amala Paul), a Physical Education teacher in a government school who is drugged and raped. The film opens with a confused Devika ‘feeling’ the assault and checking herself for signs of something she cannot remember. One went in expecting the cyberbullying tropes and cliches. But therein lies the twist; Devika is a fighter, she refuses to ‘let it go’, as her husband (Hakkim Shajahan) suggests. She tracks down her attackers and ‘punishes’ them.

Her allies include her mother-in-law Patton Kalyani, a pan-chewing, beedi -puffing Communist party activist essayed brilliantly by Manju Pillai. Kalyani is appalled that her son cannot understand the severity of the crime and the trauma Devika has undergone. Manju Pillai could have been utilised more, but then it is Devika’s story.

Sujith, Devika’s husband, initially lashes out when she tells him of the sexual assault, even accusing her of causing it. There is, what feels like, redemption for the character who realises his mistake and wants to set things right, but the damage has been done to the relationship. Devika is unforgiving when he begs for a second chance. The climax denies him redemption when we realise that the ‘acceptance’ and ‘support’ were conditional to her getting an abortion.

The couple had been trying to get pregnant for a couple of years; after the rape, she learns she is pregnant. They don’t know if it was the result of the assault, hence the expectation that the pregnancy is terminated.

However, since the writers — PV Shajikumar and Vivek — are men, the story is essentially from the male perspective. There are also things Devika does which appear unnecessarily risky, like travelling with a person she suspects of being her rapist late in the night, let alone confronting him alone.

Despite all the explanatory threads, The Teacher sticks to a tight two hours. However, one can’t help but wonder why actors Nandu, Mala Parvathy, Dinesh Prabhakar and footballer/actor IM Vijayan all figure in the film in blink-and-miss roles! What little we see of these three actors’ work is very well executed, but why are they there? Chemban Vinod has a substantial role since it is a cameo, and Anumol has a bit more to do.

Amala Paul shows flashes of maturing as an actor, but the film, unfortunately, demands only versions of three emotions — anger, disgust, and grief — in a loop. It is disturbing that the characters believe they have no hope of justice, but take the law into their hands.

An aspect of the climax where Devika literally takes on her attackers is problematic. Chemban Vinod’s character says he is not interested in women; the inference drawn is that he is queer. So when he enters and closes the door to a room with one of the attackers inside, the suggestion is unsavoury especially when we hear the younger man shout for help. Having a queer character is great, but makers have to be sensitive about how they are portrayed.

The Teacher Movie Review: A Slow Burn Thriller Film With Profound Message But Lousy Execution

Amala paul's performance saved this film from sinking.

teacher movie review in tamil

A film with a profound message but lousy execution.

During Christmas week, Netflix unveiled a new Malayalam film titled “The Teacher” starring the dazzling actress, Amala Paul in the lead role which previously graced the big screen a while ago. This thriller film is available in four languages . (Malayalam -Original, Tamil, Telegu, Kannada)

teacher movie review in tamil

This women-centric movie narrates the story of a woman who hunts for answers on the horrific aftermath of a sexual assault.  Amala Paul who plays as a physical education teacher sensed something was odd when she woke up at home. She gets a feeling that something horrible has happened to her, but she is unclear about the details. That’s where the search for her unsolved doubts begins.  Later, she discovers that her students have drugged and raped her. The story takes a turn when she plans to take revenge for her injustice.

Amala Paul did a fine job expressing her character in this film by showing a range of emotions with a dash of surprising elements towards the end. Other characters like Hakkim Shah, Manju Pillai and Chemban Vinod Jose also have done a pretty decent job of delivering the role well. Special mention to Manju Pillai who played Kalyani – a revolutionary fighter. Her role as a strong-willed woman persona was commendable.  Apart from the cast, the music score by Dawn Vincent was inducing, helping to build up the mood and environment.

One of the appealing factors was the surprising fight scenes from Amala Paul at the climax of the film. It seems to be unconnected to the logical term with the flashback during this scene but the action-packed fight stunts that she delivered were gripping and clean. She nailed that cut!

Has the message about sexual assault been delivered? Yes

Is it right for a teacher to use violence to seek revenge hmm…that’s a bit dubious.

It seems a little disturbing to portray a teacher who is using violence to seek vengeance. Truthfully speaking, is this lawfully the right example for a teacher to use this method to solve such issues? The filmmaker should have refined the concept and developed the story more effectively.

Amala Paul’s incredible performance barely kept this movie from sinking, despite the writer’s hiccups here and there.

Vivek's underwhelming 'The Teacher' (Malayalam) might have worked better as a pulpy B-movie than a “serious film with good intentions”

The Teacher Movie Review in English

The Teacher Movie Cast & Crew

Vivek follows Athiran with The Teacher , and one of the nicest bits of the film takes place in a bus. Sujith (Hakkim Shajahan) is on a call to his wife, Devika (Amala Paul). He has made a mistake, a big mistake. He is apologising.  And while this call is taking place, the woman in the next seat keeps looking at him. After Sujith hangs up, she tells him that she has been married a long time and never once has her husband said sorry to her. She's happy that at least this young generation of men has changed. If only she knew. The scene plays like the woman's story but it's actually Sujith's character that's revealed. He isn't really the man that this woman thinks he is. Well, he could have been that man if all things had gone his way. But it's how we handle the unexpected that makes us show our true colours. And Sujith's true colours aren't pretty.

Sujith loves Devika. He hasn't hit her or abused her. The only blip in their marriage is that they don't have a child. And when Sujith discovers Devika is pregnant, his reaction is beautiful. Hakkim makes us see the happiness and also the relief – he makes us feel every bit of a man who wants a child not just because he genuinely wants a child but because his patriarchal mindset can finally rest in peace that he has finally done what a Real Man is supposed to do. And it's this pregnancy that becomes the root of all that goes wrong subsequently. A rock-solid Amala Paul shows us the grit in a woman who faces difficult choices – but both she and Hakkim are let down by the writing that makes their unexpected journey fairly predictable. I wondered how the film would have turned out had the screenplay revealed the reason for Devika's unhappiness after a while, after she and Sujith celebrate the pregnancy. What if the Big Reveal had happened as… a Big Reveal to both Devika and the audience at a later point?

The Teacher is one of those films whose name assumes several meanings. Devika is a sports teacher. She teaches students and she also teaches some young boys a big lesson. Hakkim's mother (Manju Pillai) teaches him a thing or two about being a good husband, a good man. There’s a martial arts teacher. But the film’s layers are very obviously set out, and certain subplots - like the one involving a sexually abused girl - are written with zero subtlely. The way Devika discovers a crucial truth about the reason for her lack of joy about her pregnancy – that’s a great scene. But the other characters are so one-note that we know instantly what their function in this narrative is. Prashanth Murali plays Sujith's best friend, and his character is one of the most predictable. What's not predictable is the ending – but it comes out of the blue and it feels false, unlike a similar scene in Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey , where things were gradually built up to that point.

The point is not whether characters like the one played by Prashanth Murali or Manju Pillai exist. Of course they do. But on film, we want some three-dimensionality and not just one trait that defines this person or that one: Sexist Man, or Strong Woman, and so on. A scene with a gynaecologist feels like it has been put in just to feed the audience and Hakkim some information. Other scenes - like the one where Hakkim goes looking for cigarettes and finds something else, or even Devika’s sudden and instant transformation – seem very conveniently written. There's very little finesse. Given the pulpy way The Teacher reaches its end, there's a nice little B-movie to be made from this material. But Vivek wants to make serious points, and they just don't land. The people are unconvincing, and so is the film.

The Teacher review: Amala Paul’s revenge drama demanded better writing

Actor Amala Paul from the movie Teacher

A woman wakes up at home, feeling out of sorts. She knows something terrible has happened to her but isn’t sure what exactly. This is the premise of Vivek’s second directorial The Teacher. The Malayalam crime thriller is centered on Devika (Amala Paul), a Physical Education (PE) teacher, and her growing suspicion about the events of a particular day.

Though we don’t see the details of the crime till the midway mark, there are enough clues about what might have happened – Devika standing before the mirror and examining her body for bruises; her fear that videos of the crime may have made their way to the internet; and the secrecy surrounding the crime. Her husband Sujith (Hakkim Shah) is oblivious to what Devika is experiencing, and mistakes her sullen face for exhaustion. Her only confidante is a fellow teacher at school.

Devika’s unease builds and creeps into us as she tries to unravel the mystery. Amala carries the role with dignity, reflecting Devika’s confusions and suppressed fears on her expressive face. However, the characters around her are not developed sufficiently. Sujith, in particular. This is a couple that’s been married for four years and is desperately trying for a baby. But we don’t get a sense of the relationship that they share or what Sujith is actually like – his callousness, therefore, seems like an unconvincing plot point rather than something that should have affected the viewer. We know more about his equation with his slimy friend Kevin than we do about the dynamic between the husband and wife.

Manju Pillai as communist leader Kalyani is clearly inspired by KR Gowri Amma (she repeats her famous line about police lathis fathering children) – the actor gets a hero’s introduction but again, there’s very little that goes into her characterisation other than uniformly stern expressions and fiery dialogues. There are a few other character introductions too that get this old-fashioned treatment, but none of them leads anywhere. You’re left wondering why the screenplay elevated these moments because they fall so flat.

Watch the trailer of Teacher

The problem is with the writing that struggles to fit a sensitive subject like sexual violence into the template of a mainstream action thriller, replete with jarring background music. Several films have attempted to do this ever since the Nirbhaya case, but few have managed to get it right. The Teacher appears all the more dated because it doesn’t add anything new to the discourse.

The screenplay is tonally inconsistent, trying to balance Devika’s agency with ‘mass’ scenes that look out of place, Chemban Vinod Jose’s cameo being one of them. The climax takes on the colour of a parody – we saw a similar sequence in a recent blockbuster that worked brilliantly but it was of a different genre. The effect that The Teacher wants to achieve with this climax is also opposite to what the other film wanted to achieve (revealing the title will be a big spoiler).

There are also a few confusing scenes that appear like misplaced messaging. For instance, a young woman from an oppressed caste throws acid on her casteist boyfriend who dumped her. When referring to this incident, Devika says, “There’s no telling how women take revenge these days, isn’t it?” Considering the mission she is on, it’s unclear if she approves – and expects the audience to approve – of the acid attack, whatever the trigger for it.

The Teacher may have wanted to teach a strong lesson on sexual violence, but such a subject evidently demanded a lot more homework in writing, direction, and performances.

'Teacher' movie review: Tonally inconsistent, satisfying pay-off

Amala Paul from the film 'Teacher'

I always approach films about sexual violence with a measure of caution. There is either a worry about filmmakers treating the subject exploitatively or depicting the crime in an extremely disturbing manner. I went into Vivek’s second feature, Teacher, not knowing what to expect and found, to my relief, that the film aligns with my philosophy of less is more. Of course, not all filmmakers —including women—would subscribe to this, but I believe that you don’t need to show all the triggering details to convey something. With Teacher, Vivek opts for minimalism, a strong feature of the Amala Paul-starrer, a rape-revenge drama with an immensely satisfying payoff. This minimalism is also a notable feature of Amala’s performance, especially when she gets suddenly hit with the shocking realisation of what really happened to her. It’s all about the bare essentials.

Interestingly, despite the upsetting nature of the central crime, the behaviour of Devika’s (Amala) husband, Sujith (Hakkim Shahjahan), and his colleagues in the incident’s aftermath proves more disturbing. Shahjahan’s casting is apt as one of the most annoying husbands in movie history. He gets all the misguided pearls of wisdom from a married colleague who represents the typical Malayali male sexist with his own twisted ideas about what being a “real man” means.

Unsurprisingly, his bad ideas land Sujith and himself in trouble. The film opens in medias res and takes a while before telling us it’s been a month after the incident. The couple has been awaiting the arrival of a third member in the family for a long time. Things go south upon the discovery that Devika is pregnant. The blows to Sujith’s manhood don’t stop there, further compounding the deterioration of their bond.

Teacher is a contained story limiting its focus only to a few characters, doing things quietly instead of waking up the whole neighbourhood—except for, maybe, a shady motel’s inhabitants. There are clever storytelling choices that keep the police and media from getting involved. Devika ponders filing a police complaint at one point, but this is a film with other ideas.

One of the standout actors is Manju Pillai as Patton Kalyani, a firebrand revolutionary with a dark past and Devika’s mother-in-law. She becomes her strong pillar of support during her most trying times. The film gets an extra dose of energy when Chemban Vinod Jose shows up as another character with a dark past (and present). It’s a brief role crucial to how things pan out in the third act.

However, the film suffers from tonal inconsistency in several places. Manju Pillai makes some goosebump-inducing statements, but her inclusion doesn’t feel organic. Other fiery moments, such as the revelation of Devika possessing some abilities, feel too sudden. The novelty factor is missing given the memory of a similar development in a recent Malayalam film.

Occasionally, the mechanical quality of the actors’ performances can be bothersome. I wished for a more layered approach. The former quality is particularly noticeable in a cameo from Nikhil Renji Panicker, but in this character’s case, it makes some sense owing to the air of mystery around his background.

minimalistic approach I mentioned earlier also extends to Anu Moothedath’s photography, which doesn’t call attention to itself, and is largely mood-based. The ever-reliable Dawn Vincent’s dread-inducing background score also helps build the atmosphere.

Reflecting on the film’s totality, I remember the individual scenes making more impact than everything else. When one considers the better-written and staged, albeit more violent, examples of films in the same genre in international cinema, one is bound to find the writing in the Teacher slightly lacking.

The Greatest of All Time

teacher movie review in tamil

There’s a decent-sized twist partway through “The Greatest of All Time,” a new Tamil-language Indian action showcase for forever youthful-looking star Vijay. I must spoil you, dear reader, not only to illustrate how far Vijay will go to substantiate both the movie’s title and his self-appraised versatility but also to explain why this movie is a superior Vijay vehicle. Besides, this plot twist happens within the first hour of the movie’s three-hour runtime and has already been foregrounded in several reviews, so it seems to be fair game. That said, please stop reading now if you wish to remain virginal and unspoiled.

In Vijay’s recent movies, the now 50-year-old leading man takes time to boast about his range, like when he’s hailed as a “multifaced tiger with a multifaceted avatar” in the concluding song from “Beast,” an unhinged and very entertaining 2022 “Die Hard” clone. In “The Greatest of All Time,” Vijay plays two main roles so that he can literally fight a younger version of himself, seemingly de-aged either by artificial intelligence software or bad computer graphics.

Either way, Vijay stars as Gandhi, the widely revered super-spy, and also Jeevan, Vijay’s bashful son. That sort of twist isn’t anything new from mainstream Indian cinema, as Amitabh Bachchan’s fans can tell you (I’ve only seen two of the six or more movies where Big B plays his own father). Innovation isn’t either Vijay or “The Greatest of All Time”’s main strength. Rather, it’s the vigor with which director Venkat Prabhu and his collaborators match their chipmunk-cheeked star and his love of melodramatic overkill.

As both Gandhi Sr. and his adult child, Vijay’s character depends entirely on whatever the scene needs him to be. In early scenes, Papa Gandhi is an Ethan Hunt-type force of nature, like when he confronts terrorists on a moving train in Kenya armed with a mask and complicated voice-altering technology. He’s also a generically truant father and a comically bad liar to his very pregnant and very anxious wife Anu (Sneha), who suspects that Gandhi’s cheating on her.

Gandhi’s two worlds soon collide on an ill-fated trip to Bangkok, which results in the kidnapping and presumed death of his son Jeevan (Akhil, in establishing scenes). Sixteen years pass; grey hairs cover up Gandhi’s dimples. He’s sadder and wiser now, and also not on speaking terms with his wife, not until an unexpected reunion caps off an impromptu melee at the Indian embassy in Moscow. Gandhi recognizes someone across the way. Time slows to a crawl. Is that—could it be—a second Vijay?

Jeevan’s return sets up a staid pre-intermission twist, soon explained by a conventional chain of post-intermission flashbacks, whose sheer bleak-ness soon tips over into a thrilling sort of look-ma-no-brakes heedlessness as terrorism, child trafficking, and corporal punishment are thrown together to create quite the backstory.

Prabhu (“Custody”) and his fellow writers never hesitate to over-deliver on their movie’s pulpier promises (the child-trafficking stuff is a bit much). Their tendency to overdo it comes to a full head once Vijay throws himself into the role of his own son. He’s not yet a great ham, but his mustache-twirling version of Jeevan leads to the movie’s best musical number, which features both the best group choreography and best song (“Matta,” or “Drunk”) as well as Vijay’s best character-driven dancing in this and most of his other recent movies. Better yet, the inevitable Vijay vs. Vijay fight delivers most of what you should want from such a confrontation, including cricket-related peril, a bomb scare, and an airborne motorcycle.

With “The Greatest of All Time,” Vijay celebrates himself in very literal and often amusing ways, including a few callbacks to his own earlier movies, like “Thirumalai” and “Ghilli,” the last of which was re-released earlier this year in India, where it broke box office records. And in case you miss those references, some well-annotated subtitles will help orient you. Vijay’s been riding a wave of success throughout the pandemic, and “The Greatest of All Time” suggests that he doesn’t take that for granted. Here he delivers the best of his recent movies’ dance numbers as well as the most polished fight and action scenes, as well as more crowd-pleasing tangents and dramatic build-up than even in “Master,” his best recent movie. “The Greatest of All Time” still makes a lusty grab for that distinction simply by going for broke harder than most.

When it comes to broad comedies and unabashed melodramas, I’m usually not satisfied unless the moviemakers commit to exhausting whatever genre movie clichés or tropes that they’re futzing about with. “The Greatest of All Time” comes close enough to that ideal and on a fairly consistent basis.

Director Aditya Haasan made a remarkable entry into the scene with the web series “90’s – A Middle-Class Biopic,” leaving a profound impact on viewers with its authentic and relatable storytelling. Now, the same team is back with another captivating tale titled “Teacher.”

This new project, also directed by Aditya Haasan, is produced by Naveen Medaram under MNOP (Medaram Naveen Official Productions), marking their second venture. On the auspicious occasion of Sri Rama Navami, the makers unveiled an intriguing poster, hinting at a serene village setting with a scenic river and lush green fields adorned with coconut trees, while students joyfully pedal their bicycles to school.

“Teacher” features Swathi Reddy, Nikhil Devadula from “Baahubali” fame, Nitya Sri from “C/o Kancherapalem,” along with Rajendar Goud and Siddarth in pivotal roles. The movie promises a delightful journey filled with laughter, centered around three mischievous students in the Telangana village of Ankapur. It explores a heartwarming, innocent love story and depicts the humorous yet touching interactions between the students and their teacher.

The Teacher review: If you liked the first series, I have very bad news

A sofa-gripping original idea has been replaced with heavy-handed silliness.

Teachers Jimmy Spencer (Will Mellor) and Dani Osborne (Kare Tointon) begin an unwise affair in 'The Teacher' (Photo: Steffan Hill/Channel 5)

In the first series of The Teache r , in 2022, Sheridan Smith played a shambolic English teacher accused of having sex with one of her pupils. It was watched by millions and was (mostly) a critical success, so I can’t blame Channel 5 for wanting to revive the series. Turning it into an anthology, they have cast Kara Tointon as the new eponymous – and rather questionable – teacher. Unfortunately, that sofa-gripping original idea has been replaced with heavy-handed silliness.

Somewhere in the north of England, art teacher Dani Oxley (Tointon) and fellow teacher Jimmy Spencer (Will Mellor) counted teenagers onto a coach for a residential school trip. The drama wasted no time in demonstrating Dani’s deep care for her students – very early on we watched her nipping back inside the school to collect troubled student Sienna from the art studio. Smart viewers might have deduced this plot point will prove relevant later.

Sienna’s liberal eyeliner and black beanie hat couldn’t have been starker signifiers of her angsty emotional state, but the episode added dialogue just to make sure we got the message: “when I was in care, drawing was my escape, too,” said Dani, before ushering her out to the coach with a world-weary wry smile. In fact, that’s how most of Dani’s lines were delivered.

Joni Morris as troubled student Sienna Ryan in 'The Teacher' (Photo: Steffan Hill/Channel 5)

Meanwhile, glowering glances made it clear that there was tension between two boys on the trip – namely oddball Zac (Cal O’Driscoll) and boisterous Matt (Forrest Bothwell). A lingering shot of an, erm, enormous knife in Zac’s backpack made his intentions painfully clear – he had more trouble in mind for the trip than just a game of spin the bottle.

With his bag wide open on a packed bus, the knife in full view on top of his belongings, I’m afraid any last vestige of my suspended disbelief came tumbling down – and we weren’t even five minutes in. Talk about Chekhov’s gun; anyone who’s ever seen a TV drama of any kind will spend the rest of the series waiting for the weapon to appear again.

Arriving in the isolated beauty spot, Jimmy and Dani laid down some plot constraints – sorry, I mean ground rules. No vapes, no alcohol, and no phones. With nothing else for it, teachers as well as teens leant into some old-fashioned analogue human interaction. After grousing about their respective spouses, Dani and Jimmy found themselves kissing breathlessly against a tree, stopping only when a snapping twig alerted them to the possibility that they were being watched . Subtlety is not The Teacher ‘s strongest suit.

Jason Manford is not enough to revive the ailing Waterloo Road

Jason Manford is not enough to revive the ailing Waterloo Road

After dashing off for another tryst with Jimmy in a nearby boathouse the next day, Dani returned to her group of students to find Zac missing, along with one of the kayaks which had been tied up by a nearby lake. When the boat and his dead body were found, Dani was devastated – and because she was shagging her colleague when Zac disappeared, she had to lie to the police.

Grappling with her guilt, Dani sloped around the school comforting everyone else – but her saintliness was abruptly curtailed when a timestamped photograph of her and Jimmy in the boathouse started doing the rounds on social media. And in case the significance of the revelation was lost on us, student Chloe said “You were fucking while Zac was drowning?” while Matt offered “Zac’s dead because of you.” Thanks for clarifying, guys!

It’s one thing to give your story clear signposting, but The Teacher treated its audience like a classroom of dunces. Secrets and sex don’t need any zhuzhing-up to make them interesting, but this obvious, slapdash storytelling stripped intrigue from even the meatiest bones. See me after class.

‘The Teacher’ continues tomorrow at 9pm on Channel 5

Andhakaaram Movie Review In Telugu:

  17. The Greatest of All Time movie review (2024)

Here he delivers the best of his recent movies' dance numbers as well as the most polished fight and action scenes, as well as more crowd-pleasing tangents and dramatic build-up than even in "Master," his best recent movie. "The Greatest of All Time" still makes a lusty grab for that distinction simply by going for broke harder than most.
