How to Write a Welcome Speech

Just to make things clear, a welcome speech is can also be used in any event that may be held in your school, it can be a graduation ceremony, pep rally, homecoming, etc. And it can be delivered by the principal, teacher and students alike.

Now to start your journey to writing a welcome speech, the first thing you need to do is write the opening of your speech. This includes a formal greeting to the audience and acknowledging the presence of guests, if any. You should start your speech in a warm and friendly welcoming gesture so that you audience can feel comfortable during the entire duration of your speech and programme. Should you wish to mention names of guests, be sure you include all of their names, it is quite rude to forget the name of the other guests.

After you write your short greeting, you can start introducing yourself to the audience. Introduce yourself especially when it is your first time to publicly address the audience, most importantly when your the new principal, teacher or student. You need to make sure your audience will be able to remember you after the speech. However, you need not to make your introduction lengthy, just mention your name, your position for example new principal, subject teacher, etc. and a short background about yourself. Just so your audience can feel like they know have known you for quite some time. You may also see tribute speech examples & samples.

Afterwards, you present a short background about the event or inform them on what’s about to happen this school year. This is where you share announcements and basically inform them the purpose of the whole event. On an instance when the speech is blasted through the PA system, make sure you inform the audience about the significance of a new academic year, inform them of upcoming activities and basically let the know of what’s to come in the next few days, weeks or months. However, make sure you emphasize the key point/s that is related to the event you are speaking on. You may also like thank-you speech examples & samples.

And since you’re already in the point of your speech where all the relevant and significant information you needed to share has been said, share encouraging words and help motivate your audience especially the students to give their best this academic year or the following. Encourage them to be the best version of themselves. However, do not pressure them, pressuring them is way different from motivating them. You can do this by giving successful examples of famous people or people that are also familiar to them. You may also check out dedication speech examples.

Lastly, you can send them off to do their activities and what not in an encouraging manner. You an do this by giving motivational quotes or by posting a challenge that they can do in order for them to feel energized and motivated. Remember to end you speech in a positive way. Some students already dread going to school, make sure you make them feel like school and studying is not a bad thing and that all the effort and sacrifices are all going to be worth it in the end. How to Deliver an Iconic Welcome Speech

When its you first time delivering a speech it can be quite nerve-wracking most especially when you are delivering it in front of people you know, you can feel fidgety and vulnerable which can affect your delivery. But do not fret, this guide will help you deliver an iconic welcome speech.

1. Research and prepare

Before anything else, you must be prepared. If you have been given the assignment of delivering a welcome speech weeks or even days before the event, you have enough time to do a research. If the event has some special guests, research about them especially if you intend to mention their names. Research on the purpose and objectives of the event, the theme that the event is applying, and everything else that you should know. This will prevent you from stuttering or blacking out since you already have a clear background about these important information. You may also see launch speech examples.

2. Write a draft

Writing a draft ensures that you have included all the information you need to deliver. It allows you to have a clear physical copy of what you’re going to say in your speech. this will also allow you to correct and replace some contents of the speech that you think are unnecessary. A draft can also help you structure your speech better since you can easily correct if you think the sequence of your contents are off. A draft can ensure that the flow of your speech is logical and comprehensive so that you audience can easily understand the purpose of your general speech.

3. Understand the purpose of your message

Before the audience, you must first understand why you’re making a speech. How can you convey a good message if you do not understand it? After you have written your draft, read and reread it, internalize and make sure you understand your objective so that you can effectively convey it to your audience. This will also help you feel confident with your speech and can great affect how well you deliver your speech. You may also like presentation speech examples & samples.

4. Familiarize your speech

You do not need to memorize you speech; memorizing the whole speech still has a high chance of you forgetting the words especially when your nervousness overcomes. Therefore, it is still better to familiarize your entire speech. This way when you read a specific word in your cue card you will immediately remember what comes next. This will also help you avoid juts reading through the the script the whole time while delivering the speech. Since you remember you cues, you can immediately deliver what’s next. 5. Practice beforehand

And the most important part of all of this is to practice, practice, practice. Practice delivering your speech in front of the mirror that way you can see the way deliver your speech. You can correct your posture, gestures and your habit of just reading. In addition, practicing your speech days before the event will also help you familiarize your speech better and you can detect if your voice quality and intonation is good or not. Are you on welcome speech duty for an upcoming program or event? You’ve got nothing to worry about—with the right format and tone, it’s super easy to write and present a welcome speech for just about any occasion. We’ve outlined everything you need to know, from your opening greetings and acknowledgments, to establishing the right tone and nailing your closing remarks. You’ve got this in the bag!

Greeting the Audience

Step 1 Welcome the audience using serious language for a formal occasion.

  • Keep the tone more serious if it's an important occasion. Use more formal language and don't crack any inappropriate jokes. For example, at a wake, you might say, "We're so glad to have you all here tonight. We appreciate your presence at this difficult time."

Step 2 Greet guests informally by using light-hearted language.

  • For an event with close friends and family, more informal language might be appropriate. Include a few jokes and keep your speech more lighthearted.

Patrick Muñoz

Grab your audience's attention with a strong opening. Start with a loud voice and a strong presence that welcomes everyone and gets them involved. Ask a question they can respond to or tell a joke — anything to connect with the audience. Do something that grabs their attention and excites them and makes them thrilled about the event.

Step 3 Add individual greetings for any special guests.

  • Special guests include any people of honor, those that may play a particularly important part in the event, or those who have traveled a long way to be there.
  • Make sure that you practice all of names, titles, and pronunciations of the special guests before your speech.
  • For example you could say, "We'd like to extend a special welcome to our guest of honor, Judge McHenry, who will be speaking later tonight."
  • Alternatively to welcome a group of people you might say, "While we're excited to have you all here tonight, we'd especially like to say welcome to the students from Johnson Middle School."

Step 4 Introduce the event itself.

  • For an informal event such as a birthday party, you could say, "We're so happy to have you here tonight to eat, drink, and celebrate another year of Jessica's life. Now, let's get to it."
  • For a more formal event such as one run by an organisation, you could say, “We are so excited to have you all here to participate in our 10th annual pet’s day, organised by the Animal Rescue Group.”

Forming the Body of the Speech

Step 1 Acknowledge those who have played an important part in the event.

  • An example of acknowledging individual people is saying, “We couldn’t have pulled off this fundraiser without the hard work and dedication of Grace and Sally, who worked tirelessly from day 1 to make today a reality.”
  • Avoid reading off a long list of people or sponsors, as your audience will begin to get bored. Stick to just a handful of highlights.

Step 2 Mention any parts of the event that are of special importance.

  • For instance, at a conference, you might point out when the dinner will be held, or where particular sessions will take place.
  • At a wedding reception, you might note when dancing will start or when the cake will be served.

Step 3 Reiterate your welcoming line.

  • Alternatively, you could end the body of your speech during an informal gathering by saying, “I can't wait to see you all out on the dancefloor!”

Ending the Speech

Step 1 Say that you hope the audience enjoys the event, if applicable.

  • You could also say that you hope that the audience takes something away from the event. For example, “I hope that today inspires ideas and discussions around the ways that we can make our city a better place!”

Step 2 Introduce the next speaker if necessary.

  • At a formal event, you might say, "Now, for our speaker. Rebecca Roberts comes here from Montreal, Canada, and she is a leading expert in the study of the human brain. She'll be speaking tonight on what drives humans to make decisions. Let's welcome her."
  • For a more informal event such as a party, you could say, “Next up is Sam, who has been Kyle’s best friend for 10 years strong. He has a decade of embarrassing stories about Kyle to share with us tonight!"

Step 3 Thank the audience for attending.

  • Alternatively you might say, “Thank you again to everyone for being here tonight to celebrate Joe and Kathleen’s 50th wedding anniversary! Let the celebrations begin!”

Step 4 Keep your speech within a suitable time limit.

  • If you are unsure, ask the organiser or host what an appropriate length of time for your speech will be.

About This Article

Patrick Muñoz

To write a welcome speech, start with a greeting to your audience that’s appropriate to the situation. For example, you could try “Good evening ladies and gentlemen” if you’re introducing a formal event, or “Thank you everyone for coming on this sunny day” for a more relaxed occasion. After you’ve finished the greeting, introduce the event by talking about who organized it and what its purpose is. In the main body of your speech, acknowledge 2 or 3 people who played important parts in organizing the event. You should also emphasize special parts of the event that people should pay attention to, such as where dinner will be or where a conference session will take place. When you’re ready to conclude your speech, tell the audience to enjoy the event by saying something like “I hope you all enjoy the exciting speakers to come.” Finish your speech by thanking the audience for attending. How to Start a Welcome Speech in English with a Sample

Are you going to host an event soon? You might be nervous about a lot of things including the welcome speech. The welcome speech is one of the most important parts of an anchoring script because it helps you set the tone for the rest of the event. Therefore, you have to be doubly sure that you get it right. So, read the article below to learn how to start a welcome speech in English. Besides, we have a sample in the end as well.

How to Start a Welcome Speech in English

A welcome speech is a speech given by a host at the beginning of an event, gathering, celebration, meeting, or program. The purpose of a welcome is speech is to greet everyone in the audience including the chief guest, delegates, and participants. A good welcome speech is always full of optimistic and encouraging words and feedback.

If we put it in simple words, a welcome speech is to start an event or a program and to welcome the audience. Thus, follow the steps below to learn how to write a welcome speech in English.

Comparing Script for Annual Function

Step 1: locate your guests.

Before you do anything, you need to locate your audience. So, when you are behind the podium, take a look around in the audience and check who is sitting where. Especially, you need to know where are the chief guests and the delegates are sitting because you will need to address them during your event.

This is a very simple but unavoidable step. Because knowing who is in the audience and where they are sitting may help you be more confident and aware.

Step 2: Introduction

Next, you have to set the tone for the welcome speech. So, think about how you can set the tone for the welcome speech. This usually depends upon factors such as the theme of the event, demographics, audience, and others. So, once you have the right mood, you can start the first part of your welcome speech, the introduction part. It usually consists of the following elements.

  • Greeting: Greetings are similar to saltuations in a letter. For incetance, you can begin with “Good morning, laides and genetlemen”.
  • A thank you to the contributors: When an event is hosted, it is always sponsered by an orgarniation or people. So, in the introduction part of your welcome speech, it is also important to thank te contirbutors for their contribution.
  • A What statement: In the introduction part of your event, you also need to remind your audeince what is the purpose of your event. Besides, you can also mention how previliged you are for hosting the event.

Step 3: Acknowledgments

A thank you statement is not enough actually. The sponsors of your events deserve to be appreciated because they are the people who helped you turn this into reality. However, just reading the names of the sponsors out of a piece of paper may become boring for your audience. Therefore, we suggest you cut down the list and mention the highlights.

Here are some examples to help you with this section:

  • “A special thank to …”
  • “We could not have done this without …”
  • “Here is a short tale of how it all came together …”

Step 4: The goal of the event

In this section, explain what your event is all about. However, you should avoid talking about the potential benefits of attending the event. Because people who are attending your event already why they should be there and what they can get from your event. Besides, you do not need to thoroughly tell the goal of every session. So, focus on one primary two objectives that may indeed help you define the objective of your event.

Step 5: Wrap-up and What’s next

The final step is to wrap up the welcome speech and tell your audience what they can expect. You can also wrap up the welcome speech by telling a joke or by adding a little touch of fun.

Next, let your audience know what they should expect coming to the event. Besides, you can also ask someone else to brief your audience about the event’s coming sections. You can do so in the following way.

“Thank you for your attention. Ladies and gentlemen, it is time to invite _____ (name of the speaker) who will brief you more about …”

Otherwise, you can briefly mention what is next and wrap up the welcome speech.

The Best Welcome Speech for School Opening Day in English

The following speech is written for a student who is preparing to give a welcome speech on the first day of school to his fellow students, teachers, and principal. Nonetheless, with some changes here and there, anybody can use it.

sample welcome speech for visitors to school

“A very warm welcome to each and every one of you. Distinguished principal, respected staff and teachers, and my dear fellow students welcome back to (insert name of the school here).

At last, this beautiful day has arrived. I am sure you all have been eagerly waiting for this day. The fact that not all of us love coming to school is not surprising. Catching up with your friends and/or meeting your favorite teacher are just a couple of reasons, we can not avoid coming back to school.

Anyways, before going any further, I am delighted to thank the presence of the personality that hardly needs any introduction. It is none other than Mr. (insert name of the school principal here) the director and principal of (insert the name of school here). Besides, I am also honored to be thanking the hard work, patience, and perseverance of our dear teachers without whom we would not have been here.

It is, indeed, a great pleasure seeing you all gathered here for the morning assembly after what feels like a light-year. Without taking much of your time, I want to mention a lesson that personally inspires me to do and achieve more despite failing a hundred times.

Your limitation- it is only your imagination.

Thus, let us start our new year at school with hopes and dreams that no matter how limited we might be, we will do our best to achieve what we call dreams. Also, it is something magical about success. If I asked you to name the first man who walked on the moon. I am pretty hopeful that I will get a bunch of answers. However, if I asked you who was the second person, I barely hope that I will get any answers.

Because, traditionally, we do not value the second or third positions as much as we should. After all, it is not only the first person who deserves fame, a name, and a notable status. Whether you believe it or not, each and everyone deserves it because we all work hard and give our best.

However, at the end of the day, what matters most is where do you stand relative to your yesterday, not your school fellow who probably performed better than you. Additionally, those who have invested their best but they were not able to manage a victory, keep working hard because hard work pays off.

After all “Patience and Perseverance” are a couple of secrets to success. With that being said, I would like to thank you all for your patience and time. And once again, welcome back to (insert name of the school here).

What Is The Usual Content Of The Speech?

  • Introduction:  Be certain to introduce yourself in the opening portions of the speech. Include a greeting such as “good morning” or “good evening” before explaining who you are and why you are honored to represent this college or high school class.
  • Thanks : It is common for the salutatorian to thank those assembled to celebrate the special day. Acknowledging staff members at this time is also appropriate.
  •   Welcoming:  Someone needs to welcome everyone to the commencement ceremony, and as the first speaker, that task often falls to the salutatorian.
  •   Inspiring:  A salutatorian speech can serve as a tool to give pieces of advice or wisdom to the graduates. This can be done through stories, quotes, or both.
  •   Reminiscing:  Recapping and reminiscing about the years the class has spent together is often the most meaningful part of the speech.

Should The Speech Be Coordinated With That Of The Valedictorian?

Before finalizing ideas for the salutatorian speech, the salutatorian should compare notes with the valedictorian before they are solidified. Each speech should have a distinct and exciting focus that will not render the other redundant. Coordinating your approaches is an excellent way to ensure attendees enjoy both of your speeches.

How Do You Write The Speech?

  • Ask a teacher, administrator, or faculty advisor  to determine  your speech length . If they say 3-5 minutes, you should stick within that time frame. These speeches are usually at most 10 minutes.
  •   Talk to classmates   to gather material.  Are there stories you want to share about your graduating class? Be sure you are not focusing on a small group of people, as it is graduation day for an entire class, not just a few.
  •  Choose a  few main points  to make. Don’t try to cram too many speech topics into the 5 or so minutes you have to talk.
  •  Make an  outline.  How will you bring your thoughts together into a cohesive speech? Remember that bringing it all together is a big part of powerful public speaking. If you want to write an inspirational speech, use a quote to either kick off or conclude your speech.
  •  Start  writing . Once you have a rough draft,  read it out loud  and time yourself. Make sure you have avoided clichés. Verify that it fits the time constraints you have been given. The rule of thumb is that one double-spaced typed page is about  two minutes worth of speaking .
  •  Don’t forget to  revise.  Even accomplished authors take the time to take suggestions and revise their work.
  •   Practice, practice, practice.  Work on fine-tuning items like making eye contact and not talking too fast.

What Is An AI-Produced Example Of A Salutatorian Speech Sound Like?

A generic salutatorian speech primarily produced by Google Bard shows how the parts of the speech come together to welcome, thank, reflect, and inspire.

Good morning, faculty, staff, parents, and fellow graduates. It is an honor to stand before you today as the salutatorian of our graduating class.

I would like to start by thanking my parents, teachers, and friends for their support over the past four years. I would not be standing here today without their help.

I would also like to thank the faculty and staff of our school for their dedication and hard work. They have helped us to learn and grow in so many ways.

AI-generated salutatarian speech example

I would like to take a moment to reflect on our past experiences. Four years ago, we came into these hallways as timid freshmen, unsure of what the next four years would bring. We stumbled through our first day of school, struggling to find the paths to our classes. Since Covid was in full swing, our way to class was often online, and masks were our top fashion accessory.

But as the years went by, we grew and learned together. We experienced moments of triumph and moments of defeat. But through it all, we supported each other and made lasting memories.

I remember the first time we went to the homecoming football game. We were all so excited to be there, and we cheered our team on to victory. I also remember the time we went on the senior trip to Europe. We had so much fun exploring new cities and cultures. And, of course, I will never forget the prom. It was a magical night that we will all cherish forever.

These are just a few of the many memories we shared. We have laughed together, cried together, and supported each other through thick and thin. We have grown up together, and we have become the people we are today because of each other.

Conclusion:

As we look to the future, I know that we are all excited about the possibilities that lie ahead. We are ready to take on new challenges and make a difference in the world.

I am confident that we will all achieve great things. We have the talent, the drive, and the support of our loved ones. I know that we will make our school proud.

Thank you again for this opportunity. I wish you all the best in your future endeavors.

Congratulations, class of 2023! I wish you all the best in your future.

What Are Some Real-life Salutatorian Speech Examples?

While looking for great graduation speech examples, we stumbled upon this one by  Cassidy Bell , Guilford Schools Class of 2016 salutatorian. Notice how she thanks those in attendance, tells stories that relate to the entire graduating class, gives some focus on the school principal, and pulls it all together.

Mariel Camargo  is the Waxahachie High School salutatorian, and she gives another great speech. Mariel thanks those dearest to her and explains why their love and support means so much to her. But she does not dwell on her personal story. Rather, she pulls in the entire class repeatedly.

A speech for a parochial school might have some different content and slant to it, as illustrated in this speech by  Caroline Kniskern  of Gilbert Christian Schools.

Whatever approach you decide to take after looking at salutatorian speech templates, do your best to give it a personal slant that is most appropriate for you, your school, the graduating class you represent, and the community you grew up in.

Church welcome speech sample

A short welcome speech for church visitors

Posted by:  Susan Dugdale  | Last modified: 08-12-2023

Our church welcome speech sample below covers the 3 essential elements of a genuinely welcoming speech for the visitors or newcomers in your congregation.

The speaker has:

  • acknowledged the visitors/newcomers
  • given them an introduction to the core points of the congregation's beliefs and practice
  • and warmly invited them to connect and participate in church life.

The speech is sincere, brief and will be easily understood by those who hear it.

Image - Drawing by Amy Burton - 5 singers with their arms lifted in worship.

All the possibly tricky issues are covered

Although it might appear simple the speech covers a number of potentially complex issues succinctly.

  • freely offering a warm welcome regardless of the visitor's motivation. That is "just looking" , or seriously considering the church as fitting their needs.
  • addressing unspoken questions the newcomer may have through giving a clear statement about what's at the heart of the church's belief and practice. The visitor does not have to guess. If they're debating whether to join the congregation, they have been given something solid to base their decision-making process on.
  • giving an invitation to discuss issues personally. For example: "...so if you ever feel like just another number, we're doing something wrong, and I give you permission to tell me about it." The implication of that invitation is powerful. The message it gives is: "You are valuable. I care, we care, enough about you to give you time. I am not above or better than you. You are free to tell me where I have gone wrong in reaching you."
  • providing clear means of creating a connection. E.g. "Fill out one of our connect cards" and by completing a prayer request.
  • having a welcoming pack to give to visitors. It's something tangible they can take away that contains the church's essential details and contacts. (In this speech it's a "bulletin" .)
  • looking into the future, anticipating what's ahead if the invitation to join is accepted
  • honoring the guest: "Allow us to serve you."

You're most welcome to take, shape and change the speech to fit your needs.

Short church welcome speech sample

"I want to take a moment to extend a very warm welcome to everyone who's visiting us for the first time this morning.

Whether you're just having a look, or are searching out for a place to worship, we're sincerely delighted to have you here.

To give you some idea of what we're all about, I'll quickly sketch some of our foundational beliefs.

Our vision statement says this: "Getting and growing people in relationship with Jesus".

So firstly, we're all about Jesus Christ.

We believe that Jesus was who he said he was, the Son of God who came and died for our sins.

So, if this is your first time in church, we hope that you get to know Him as we do, because He's truly what life is all about for us!

sample welcome speech for visitors to school

Secondly, we're all about people.

Every person who walks through our doors is important to us. So, if you ever feel like just another number, we're doing something wrong and I give you permission to tell me about it.

As a group of God's people we care about you and your family. We're here not only to feed you spiritually, but to help in any way we can. We love doing it and it's why we exist!

Image: quotation from church welcome speech: We hope to cultivate and grow meaningful and positive relationships between each other.

Thirdly, we're all about relationships.

We hope to cultivate and grow meaningful and positive relationships between each other, and also go further by getting, and growing, in relationship with God.

Christianity is all about a Person, and less about a set of rules. That means that we exist to be in a relationship with Someone. To us that Someone is Jesus. We are not here merely to obey a religion.

That's us in a nutshell!

I want to encourage you to fill out one of our connect cards that you'll find in the bulletin you got when you came in. Just write your name and e-mail or phone number on there and give it back to us.

We'd love to stay in touch with you and to let you know about some exciting upcoming events we're planning for the next few months.

Also, if you've got a specific prayer request, please find the courage to write it down on that same piece of paper (there's a space for it), and put it in the prayer box at the back of this room when you leave.

We'd love to pray for you, but if you don't ask us, there's nothing for us to pray for. So, I encourage you to take hold of this opportunity and allow us the honor of serving you in this way.

Enjoy the rest of your worship time with us, and God bless you!"

Welcome Speech by Principal Example

Profile image of vincent nelly

Dear Teachers and Students, Good morning! Welcome back to school! I hope you have enjoyed yourselves well in the summer holiday, and prepared yourselves well for the study of the new academic year. Today is the first time for me to address you in a formal school ceremony and I would like to begin with a brief self-introduction. My name is Wan Ho Yin and My English name is Hairo. To me, being able to make contribution to life education is a very noble mission. I had started dreaming to be a teacher as early as when I was just a Primary One student. Undoubtedly I was deeply influenced by my school teachers and they acted as very amazing role models for me. I started my teaching career shortly after graduating from the University of Hong Kong. Despite teaching for over twenty years, my passion for education is still very strong. I believe that our children are our future and our future must be bright because of the quality education that we can provide. Indeed it is my honor to be a principal in Yuen Long Lutheran Secondary School as it is truly a school glorifying our god and beneficial to the mankind. Thanks God! I would like to share with you great news in the academic performance of our school: our graduates got very remarkable results in the HKDSE and they performed much better than that of the previous year. The overall percentage of getting Level 2 or above in all subjects is 97%. And the overall percentage of getting Level 4 or above and Level 5 or above in all subjects are 57% and 19% respectively. The credit rate of 94.4% subjects (18 subjects) are much higher than that of all schools in HK. The rate of L5 or above of 74% (14 subjects) subjects is much higher than that of all schools in HK. Over 73% of our graduates meet the entrance requirements of degree programs. In the clearing round of the JUPAS, 53% of our graduates have entered local universities for degree and sub-degree programs.

Eva Hagenhofer

This is a story about urban students becoming urban teachers. It begins with the 1988 U.S. Department of Education funding of a bold idea: attracting multicultural/multilingual students to begin their teacher preparation at a two year college, preparing them to continue at a 4 year college. This is how the Milwaukee Area Technical College became one of the first ( if not the first ) 2 year colleges in the country to offer such a program. The Cooperative Urban Teacher Education Program (CUTEP), then the Teacher Education track, and now Educational Foundations has, throughout these name changes, aimed to recruit and prepare students of color and their allies for success in K-12 licensing tracks at 4 year colleges and then as teachers in the Milwaukee Public School district. The characteristics of Star Teachers of Children in Poverty, as posited and discussed by Dr. Martin Haberman in his 1995 publication, are discussed and then exemplified by the words of CUTEP alumni, gleaned and directly quoted from interviews conducted with the author, a 10 year teacher and coordinator of the program now known as the Educational Foundations track of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The interview questions were shared prior to face-to-face conversations and were intended to surface the students’ thoughts on how their personal backgrounds and educational experiences within the 2 year college program contributed to their ability to navigate the 4 year college environment and, subsequently, guide their professional practice, decision making, and relationships in their school buildings. Their responses reveal a profound commitment to students, but also a frustration with time-consuming reporting mandates, constantly changing curriculum standards, over-filled classrooms, insufficient support from other professionals, and resistance to addressing the systemic causes of racially identifiable gaps in achievement. As school districts face staffing shortages due to veteran teachers retiring, younger teachers leaving the profession, and college-age students choosing professions with greater monetary and psychological compensation and respect, the words of these former students, now teachers are instructive. Their reflections on their own educational backgrounds, near misses and achievements, reveal a deep desire to be effective teachers of “their own”, knowing that for poor children, having an effective teacher is, as Haberman puts it, “a matter of life and death.”

This report details the continuing outstanding academic standards of the University of Hong Kong (HKU) by focussing on undergraduate admissions for the year 2014-15. It explains the background to this, including the virtually 100% employment record of HKU graduates every year for the last 8 years, and the high academic achievements of Asian students. The report covers local Hong Kong, Mainland Chinese and International recruitment and admissions, and describes the ways in which the University, and its students, engage internationally and regionally.

5 Inspiring Church Welcome Speech Samples

Emma Davis March 11, 2024 Uncategorized Leave a Comment

If you’re looking for inspiration for church welcome speeches, then look no further! By giving a very warm welcome, it’s your job to set the tone. A welcome speech for church may seem like a menial task, but it’s a vital part of any service. Any church service needs a good flow and rhythm.

A church welcome speech sets the stage for what’s ahead. Whether you’re hosting a conference, a normal Sunday morning, or a special event, welcoming your members is very important.

We’ve prepared several sample welcome speeches for churches that will hopefully inspire you. Prepare for a Sunday or your event with little stress!

Table of contents

What is a welcome speech, who gives the welcome speech, welcome first time visitors, match the speech with the event, use your emotions, don’t:, keep it brief, sunday service, women’s conference, guest speaker in the house.

Estimated reading time: 11 minutes

Welcome speeches are a great way to set the tone for an upcoming service, or church event to welcome old and new members of your church. Starting with a welcome speech gives your church service or meeting a warm and comforting start. It also helps those new to your church feel like they’re in the right place.

A church welcome speech is also an excellent way to share what to expect during the rest of the service. Essentially, the welcome sets the tone. When writing a welcome speech, try to find ways for church members to participate. You can do this by asking them to greet one another, maybe give someone a high five or a fist bump. Also let them know about how they can give tithes any time during the service using their smartphones, via text, or your online donation form.

sample welcome speech for visitors to school

One common question that people wonder is who should give the church welcome speech. Should it be the pastor? An elder? Another speaker? A congregant? It isn’t the job of any one person. It might be useful however to match the welcome speaker to an event in the church.

Do you have a youth conference coming up? Have your youth pastor welcome people to church and remind them about the conference. You can do the same for a women’s or men’s event. Having someone involved in the specific event give information can be very welcoming.

Sometimes the welcome speaker is consistent — typically a pastor or other church leader . Perhaps you have multiple campuses, and the welcome speaker is your campus pastor. One thing that is always the same, regardless of who is talking, is that people who are confident, comfortable in front of a crowd, and can be trusted are great for the task.

No matter who you choose, make sure they’re an individual that you can trust to come through with a quality delivery every week.

Words of welcome before worship should be appealing to church visitors . Don’t say, “Welcome members of my church,” as a greeting. You can say something like, “Welcome brothers and sisters,” instead.

You might also say something along the lines of, “If you are visiting us for the first time today, we’re happy you are here.” Don’t always point out first-time visitors in the audience because this can make them self-conscious. Feel free to give visitors directions to your welcome center or the bathrooms, especially if you have a large church.

Say something to put your first-time visitors at ease. “We won’t ask you to stand up or wave your hands” can be comforting for some people.

Though you shouldn’t promote upcoming events during this specific time, you can point out that you meet every week and the visitors are welcome to return to your next service. You can also mention a newcomers’ gathering.

Your welcome speech should reflect the event you are welcoming your guests to. For an average Sunday service, your tone should be upbeat and encouraging. But for a more somber occasion like a funeral, you may want to be more stoic and calm. And as mentioned above, at a youth conference, you’ll want to bring the energy!

With any event, this may be a time to give some practical information in your speech. If your service needs extra time or if you are serving food, you should include those details in your speech. You should include a brief description of your service so your audience knows what is coming up.

It is typically appropriate to open with a prayer. If you struggle with writer’s block, consider leading the congregation in a prayer that reflects on the occasion in some way. You can also read an excerpt from the Bible to gather your thoughts.

Smiling and moving your tone up is a good way to make your audience happy and feel at ease. But, don’t try and use complicated language. A welcome speech is usually given after the worship team is done. People are waiting to hear directions on what to do next. Tell a light-hearted joke such as “turn to your neighbor as you find your seat and tell them they look good today!”

Many people tell jokes to satisfy their audience, which can be risky. A joke can be inappropriate during a formal or somber occasion, and the joke may not land correctly. So, if you’re going to tell a joke, try doing a pun or wordplay. Never make a joke at someone else’s expense; remember your in the House of God! Instead, try something like rhyming. It may not be funny, but it can catch your audience’s attention and connect two ideas.

sample welcome speech for visitors to school

Visuals can help what you are talking about and entertain your audience. You can put a simple graphic behind you that welcomes guests to your church . Also you can find stock art online for free with welcome messages, or you can make your own.

Another effective way to put guests at ease is to give them something physical. At a minimum, they should have a Bible and songbook so they can follow along with the service. Perhaps you can also hand out bottles of water and snacks that they can consume during the event.

Church welcome materials can include church connect cards and handouts. Leave them at the front of the room for first-time visitors to collect, or you can have someone hand them out.

Do’s and Dont’s

There are some simple do’s and don’t for any welcome speech. Hopefully, some of these are common knowledge, but it never hurts to review before stepping on stage. And don’t worry if you did a few of these don’ts – practice makes perfect!

  • Maintain eye contact
  • Speak slowly
  • Include a transition
  • Introduce yourself and your role
  • Read from a speech
  • Give too much information
  • Spend too much time welcoming everyone
  • Say anything inapproprate

Keep these in mind, and you’ll do great! The biggest thing to remember is to resist the urge to get sucked down the rabbit hole of treating your welcome speech as an information dump that overwhelms visitors. You want to include basic information for people like the church name or where the bathrooms are, but only include the most important stuff. Speak slowly and only say what is necessary. The rest can follow later on in the service or closer to the end for announcements.

Welcome speeches are rarely more than 150 words long. Your church welcome speech is not the time for an exegesis of the Bible. It’s Say what you need to say to start the occasion and then move on.

Consider writing out your speech word for word and seeing what details you can cut out. Besides adverbs and adjectives, you can cut out details that the pastor will say later. Save church announcements and in-house business for another occasion. You can send out reminders about upcoming events in emails and text messages .

Feeling stuck and not being able to find just the right words to introduce events is so irritating that it could make you smash your own head (by personal experiences; wink). A welcome could either cheer them up or make them leave the event and rather have cozy sleep at home . Martin Luther King, in 1943, delivered a speech “I have a dream” and that still doesn’t fail to inspire people.

Short Welcome Speech Samples That You Can Use-19

It is simply not possible for everyone to come up with the right kind of words to use in a welcome speech. It is something that one has to plan and think about so that the right tone is set for the person you are welcoming to make his or her speech. Plus care has to be taken to ensure that none of the vital details are missed but at the same time, the speech cannot be too long. It is not as simple as writing a heart melting long distance relationship quote and requires a lot more consideration.

Focus on the TONE While Delivering the Introductory Speech For an Event

Short Welcome Speech Samples That You Can Use

Understanding the basic idea and being able to think about the feel is really important in order to make the listener feel connected. Make sure they don’t yawn or even doesn’t end up rolling on the floor laughing too! Your speech should be making them feel eager to know what going to come up next. If at all it is the professional conference that you are conducting, you can’t pour in too much fun in your speech but a family function demands the same. Choosing tone and focus on how you talk to the audience will vary with the different types of event. Decide if its “Howz it going peepz?” event or “Blesses morning, ladies and gentlemen.” event. A few Maid of Honor Speeches if at all you are thinking to make the #Bigday special for your BFF.

Important Points to Consider while Giving Welcome Speech For an Event

Short Welcome Speech Samples That You Can Use

  • What is the purpose of the event and what it aims to achieve out of it? The objective, unless made clear to the audience, leaves the speech incomplete. Be specific as you introduce the event and its significance ’cause being brief helps people register it seriously. Tempting them is all you have to do and then stop – make them feel excited about the event.
  • Welcome speech must address all the guests and the chief guests of the event (if any) thanking them for being present and giving the auspicious event their valuable attention.
  • Make proper introductions of the Chief guests and hosts along with the motive of the function to achieve more attention and appreciation. Make sure you have all the names beforehand and you know how to pronounce them correctly.

SSS Mantra for Appreciable Hosting

Short Welcome Speech Samples That You Can Use

Short-Simple-Sincere, it should be! The speech better not exceed a minute or two. Use simple and understandable language along with a sincere tone and vocab as to make sure your audience gets impressed by your way of expression.

The Ukrainian president has cancelled visits to Spain and Portugal after Moscow's forces began a new offensive in the northeast of the country, where Kyiv says it is moving troops to new positions. Submit your question on the war for our experts to answer in the box below.

The head of the Ukrainian police force in the Kharkiv region has described the situation in the town of Vovchansk as "extremely difficult".

Oleksiy Kharkivskiy, Vovchansk's patrol police chief, said on Facebook that Russian forces are establishing positions inside the town.

Yesterday Russia claimed it had taken parts of Vovchansk and the border village, Buhruvatka.

It is part of Moscow's pressing offensive on the Kharkiv region, which is forcing Ukraine to rush in reinforcements.

Russia has said it repelled a Ukrainian drone attack on the region of Tatarstan - around 497 miles east of Moscow.

The defence ministry said the attack occurred at around 7.30am local time.

It said Russian air defences had destoyed an aeroplane-style drone.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has cancelled a trip to Spain and Portugal, with some media outlets reporting it is because of renewed fighting in Ukraine.

King Felipe of Spain was due to hold a reception for Mr Zelenskyy on Friday.

The Ukrainian leader was then expected to sign a bilateral security cooperation agreement with Portugal's Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.

A spokesperson for the Portuguese government said Mr Zelenskyy had cancelled the visit but did not give a reason, while the Spanish government said it could not comment for security reasons.

As we have been reporting, Ukrainian troops remain outgunned by Russian forces.

Yesterday, the western and northern parts of Vovchansk in Ukraine's Kharkhiv region fell under the control of Russian forces, according to the TASS state news agency.

Emergency teams have been working at the scene of a Russian airstrike in Kharkiv.

The region is where Russian forces are pressing on with an offensive, forcing Ukraine to rush in reinforcements.

Apart from the devastation and the blow to Ukrainian morale in the region, home to Ukraine's second largest city of Kharkiv, the incursion is a distraction for Kyiv's defensive operations in the east where Russia has focused its offensive for months.

Fires at an oil depot and power substation in Russia's Belgorod and Lipetsk regions were caused by drones launched by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), a Ukrainian intelligence source has told Reuters.

The attack damaged Oskolneftesnab oil depot near the city of Staryi Oskol in Russia's Belgorod region and Yeletskaya power substation in the Lipetsk region.

"Russian industry which works to wage war with Ukraine will remain a legitimate target for the SBU," the intelligence source said.

"Measures to undermine the enemy's military potential will continue."

For context : Ukraine has been stepping up its strikes on oil and gas facilities across Russia in an effort to disrupt military logistics and combat operations - it is these facilities that supply fuel for Russian tanks, ships and fighter jets.

Experts also say that striking these sites will most likely cause disruption to Russia's energy network.

The region of Chasiv Yar, in the eastern Bakhmut region, has long been under fire.

It is in eastern areas like this that Russia's advance has been far more significant and strategically important.

But it is hoped that a weapons package from the US could change that.

Here, our  security and defence editor Deborah Haynes  visits an artillery position on the outskirts of the frontline region ...

The Russian defence ministry has said its air forces destroyed 10 long-range missiles known as ATACMS that Ukraine's military launched overnight at Crimea.

The ministry did not say whether there was any damage, but the Russia-installed governor of the Crimean port of Sevastopol said that missile debris fell onto a residential area.

According to early information, no one was injured, Mikhail Razvozhayev, the governor, said on Telegram .

Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine 10 years ago in a move broadly condemned by Kyiv's Western allies.

And Russia has often said, without providing evidence, that Ukraine had started using the US-supplied ATACMS.

Yesterday, a US official said that ATACMS and air defence interceptors approved by Joe Biden on 24 April were already reaching the Ukrainian forces.

Ukraine's military has said it is moving troops to new positions in two areas of the northeastern Kharkiv region where Moscow is pressing an offensive, and warned of a Russian force buildup to the north near its Sumy region.

A cross-border attack on a new flank in Sumy region would likely stretch Kyiv's depleted defenders even further after Russia's incursion into the Kharkiv region opened a new front on Friday, forcing Ukraine to rush in reinforcements.

Russia has made inroads into the north of Kharkiv region and said yesterday it had taken parts of the town of Vovchansk and the border village, Buhruvatka.

Military spy chief Kyrylo Budanov has said Moscow has already committed all the troops it has in the border areas for the Kharkiv operation, but that it has other reserve forces that he expected to be used in the coming days.

"A rapid trend towards a stabilisation of the situation had emerged - that is, the enemy is, in principle, already blocked at the lines that it was able to reach," he said in televised comments.

Mr Budanov said Russia had small groups of forces in the border areas near Ukraine's Sumy region in the vicinity of the Russian town of Sudzha from where Russian natural gas transits into Ukraine by pipe on its way to European customers.

"As for the Sumy region, the Russians actually planned an operation in the Sumy region from the very beginning... but the situation did not allow them to take active actions and start the operation," he said.

Top Ukrainian officials say they do not believe Russia has the troop numbers to capture the city of Kharkiv.

Welcome back to our coverage of the Ukraine war.

Yesterday, US secretary of state Antony Blinken sought to rally the spirits of Ukrainians facing a fierce new Russian offensive during a trip to Kyiv.

He also told Ukrainian leaders that despite a months-long delay in US assistance that left them vulnerable to renewed Russian military strikes, more weaponry was coming and some had already arrived.

Here are the other key developments from the past 24 hours:

  • The western and northern parts of Vovchansk in Ukraine's Kharkhiv region fell under the control of Russian forces, according to the TASS state news agency;
  • Russia's supreme court rejected an appeal by Kremlin critic Vladimir Kara-Murza against his 25-year jail sentence;
  • A power line and nearly two dozen houses were damaged in Ukraine's latest air attack on the Russian border city of Belgorod, officials said;
  • The operator of the Ukrainian high-voltage electricity grid, Ukrenergo, said it was starting "controlled emergency shutdowns" for industries and households because of "a significant shortage of electricity in the system due to Russian shelling and an increase in consumption due to the cold weather".
