The Department of Psychology at the University of South Florida is committed to furthering our understanding of behavior and mental processes utilizing the methods of science.

Doctoral (PhD) Program in Psychology

Graduate students are trained in both basic and applied research to become independent scholars. Students work with one or more faculty members engaging in a broad range of research. Students can enter with a Master’s degree or earn a Master of Arts Along the Way as part of the Ph.D. program. The Ph.D. program is housed at USF Tampa (e.g., classes and labs); however, some advisors may have their offices at USF Sarasota or USF St. Petersburg.

Master of Arts (MA) in Psychological Sciences

Psychological Sciences is a self-contained M.A. degree that includes the study of biological, social, developmental, and cognitive bases of health and human behavior. (This degree is different from the M.A. en route to the Ph.D. Admission into or completion of the M.A. degree in Psychological Sciences has no bearing on admission into the Ph.D. program above.) The M.A. program in Psychological Sciences is housed on the USF St. Petersburg campus.

Psychology (CLAS)

Program information.

The Department of Psychology offers the Master of Science and the Doctor of Philosophy degrees. Complete descriptions of the minimum requirements for these degrees are provided in the Graduate Degrees section of this catalog. Students are not accepted for a terminal master’s degree.

Doctoral areas of specialization include the research areas of developmental, behavior analysis, behavioral and cognitive neuroscience, social psychology, and counseling psychology. The training program in counseling psychology is accredited by the American Psychological Association. A predoctoral internship of one year is required for the counseling psychology program.

Undergraduate preparation should include at least one course in experimental methods and one course in statistics. Other courses in psychology should include at least three or four of the following: cognition, developmental, learning, personality, physiological, sensory, and social. Applicants should have competitive GRE scores and GPA (3.5 or higher).

Co-major: The Department offers a co-major program in conjunction with the College of Education leading to the Doctor of Philosophy degree in psychology and research and evaluation methodology.

He has been licensed to practice psychology in Maryland for 25 years. He has also been granted approval from the Psychology Interjurisdictional Compact (PSYPACT) to practice telepsychology with residents of several other states.
