For the Academic Year 2024, the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) is a Deemed to be University funded by Ministry of Education through UGC is announcing admission notification for Ph.D. Programmes across Mumbai Campus and Hyderabad, Guwahati & Tuljapur Off-Campuses.

Ph.D. Eligibility Criteria:
(1) Those clearing in UGC-NET 2024 in any of three categories are eligible to apply for the admission to Ph.D. programmes:
Category-1: Eligible for (i) admission to Ph.D. with JRF and (ii) appointment as Assistant Professor.
Catcgory-2: Eligible for (i) admission to Ph.D. without JRF and (ii) appointment as Assistant Processor.
Catcgory-3: Eligible for admission to Ph.D. programme only and not for the for the award of JRF or appointment as Assistant Professor
(2) For admission to Ph.D. in Social Work, clearing in UGC-NET 2024 in the subject of Social Work is the eligibility requirement.
(3) For admission to Ph.D., in Applied Psychology, clearing in UGC-NET 2024 in the subject of Psychology is the eligibility requirement.
(4) For admission to Ph.D. in Education, clearing in UGC-NET 2024 in any one of the subjects of Social Science discipline/allied fields, preferably in the subject Education is the eligibility requirement.
(5) For admission to all the remaining Ph.D. programmes mentioned in Serial Numbers 4 to 17, clearing in UGC-NET 2024 in any one of the subjects of Social Science discipline/allied fields is the eligibility requirement.
(6) Those students who are having valid JRF prior to 2024 in Social Work, Psychology are also eligible to apply for Ph.D. in Social Work and Ph.D.in Applied Psychology respectively. The valid JRF holders prior to 2024 in any subject of Social Science discipline/allied fields, preferably in Education are eligible to apply for Ph.D.in Education
(7) Those students who have cleared only NET prior to 2024 are not eligible to apply for any of the Ph.D. programmes.
Eligibility criteria of qualifying degree:
Candidates who have completed: A 1-year/2-semester master's degree programme after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree programme or a 2-year/4-semester master’s degree programme after a 3-year bachelor’s degree programme or qualifications declared equivalent to the master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed
Or equivalent qualification from a foreign educational institution accredited by an assessment and accreditation agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country to assess, accredit or assure quality and standards of the educational institution.
A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-Abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the University Grants Commission from time to time.
Provided that a candidate seeking admission after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree programme should have a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade on a point scale wherever the grading system is followed. A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-Abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the University Grants Commission from time to time.
Selection criteria for Ph.D. admission:
(1) For those students with category 2 and category 3 of UGC-NET 2024, 70% weightage is given to their NET score and 30% weightage is to their performance in the personal interview
(2) For those students who are having a valid JRF (JRF prior to 2024 or JRF of 2024), the selection will be done based on the personal interview only. The personal interview component carries 100% weightage. The students with JRF of 2024 may also apply with their NET score along with category 2 and category 3 students where both NET score and score in Personal interview will be the selection criteria.
(3) Reservation* – Tata Institute of Social Sciences is Deemed to be University funded by Ministry of Education through UGC and follows all the norms and regulation of Government of India with respect to reservation policy. According to this, in the Central Universities and Institutions which are deemed to be Universities, the reservation of seats shall be as follows:
i. 15% of the seats for Scheduled Caste (SC) candidates.
ii. 7.5% of seats Scheduled Tribe (ST) candidates.
iii. 27% of the seats for Other Backward Classes (OBC) Non-Creamy Layer (NCL) candidates as per the Central List
iv. 10% of the seats for General-Economically Weaker Sections (General- EWS) candidates.
v. 05% of the seats in the above-mentioned categories for Persons with Disabilities (PwD) with 40% or more disability.
vi. 05% of the seats in the above-mentioned categories for Kashmert Migrants as per GoI guidelines
vii. 05% of the seats in the above-mentioned categories for Armed Forces

Mode of Ph.D. Programme: Ph.D. Programmes are offered in Full-time and Part-time mode. Both the full-time and part-time Ph.D. programme are offered only through regular mode. TISS does not offer any Ph.D. programme in distance mode.
TISS follows all the guidelines and norms issued by the University Grants Commission from time to time in regulating the Ph.D. programmes such as “ University Grants Commission (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2022.
The full-time and part-time Ph.D. programmes follow uniform standards such as successful completion of coursework, regular presentations before the Research Advisory Committees, stipulated time period to complete Ph.D., the evaluation and assessment methods of coursework and thesis. The Ph.D. degree certificate or Ph.D. award certificate of TISS does not make any distinction between full-time and part-time Ph.D. and both are treated equally.
The part-time Ph.D. students are working professionals who join Ph.D. programme by obtaining a No Objection Certificate from their organizations/employers that assures them providing leave and other support to complete the Ph.D. work. Those students who wish to apply under part-time Ph.D. mode are required to submit a NOC from their employer/organization clearly mentioning that (i) The candidate is permitted to pursue studies on a part-time basis. (ii) His/her official duties permit him/her to devote sufficient time for research. (iii) If required, he/she will be relieved from the duty to complete the course work.
TISS encourages professionals working in development sector, government employees, people working with grassroot organizations and corporate groups to join its Ph.D. programmes through part-time mode.
The full-time Ph.D. students are not working professional and devote their full time to the Ph.D. research. They are mostly receipts of various fellowships/scholarships and are required to put their attendance on daily basis in the Attendance Register maintained in the Doctoral Students’ Office (DSO) of the Institute. They are also required to attend the research seminars, talks arranged on regular basis by their schools and the DSO. Whenever, the full-time Ph.D. students get a job, they can request for converting their Ph.D. into part-time Ph.D.
Ph.D. Coursework : All the selected candidates for Ph.D. programme – both part-time and full-time are required to successfully complete the Ph.D. coursework which is a minimum of 12 credits, including a “Research and Publication Ethics” course as notified by UGC vide D.O. No. F.1- 1/2018(Journal/CARE) in 2019 and courses on qualitative, quantitative research methodology.
A Ph.D. scholar must obtain a minimum of 55% marks or its equivalent grade in the UGC 10-point scale in the course work to be eligible to continue in the programme and submit his or her thesis.
The Ph.D. Coursework will be offered in off-line regular classroom mode during the first semester of the Ph.D. programme. The part-time Ph.D. students may join regular classes along with full-time Ph.D. students or they have to attend the Ph.D. coursework that will be organized in six modular workshops in regular off-line mode spread across the first semester.

A 1-year/2-semester master' s degree programme after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor's degree programme or a 2-year/4-semester master's degree programme after a 3-year bachelor's degree programme or qualifications declared equivalent to the master's degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed or equivalent qualification from a foreign educational institutions accredited by an assessment and accreditation agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country to assess, accredit or assure quality and standards of the educational institutions.
A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/differently-abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the commission from time to time.
Provided that a candidate seeking admission after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor's degree programme should have a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade on a point scale wherever the grading system is followed. A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per the decision of commission from time to time.
Candidates who have completed the M. Phil programme with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a point scale. A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per the decision of commission from time to time.
Reservation is applicable only to Maharashtra domicile candidates provided they submit the necessary documents for reservation before interview. Outside Maharashtra candidates will be considered in open category.
Candidates satisfying eligibility criterion shall be called to appear for the Ph.D. entrance test conducted by MITWPU.
PhD entrance test shall be qualifying with qualifying marks as 50% provided that relaxation from 50% to 45% shall be allowed for the candidates belongs to SC/ST/OBC (Non creamy layer)/Differently abled category, Economically Weaker section (EWS) and other category of candidates. The syllabus of entrance test shall consist of 50% of research methodology and 50% shall be subject specific.
The interview/viva-voce will be conducted by the university for test qualifying candidates. For selection of candidates a weightage of 70% to the entrance test and 30% to the performance in the interview/Viva-voce shall be given. For GATE/NET/JRF /SET/GPAT/CEED qualified students, the selection will be based on Interview/Viva Voce
The recommended candidates will be intimated through email about their selection and the candidates will be offered Ph.D. provisional admission.
The eligibility of a candidate is provisional as per information provided by the candidate in his/her application form and is subject to verification of minimum eligibility conditions for admission to the program, educational documents and reservation documents (if any).
University keep rights to cancel admission of the Ph.D. scholars in the case of misconduct by the scholar, unsatisfactory progress/absent for consecutive two progress seminars, failure in any examination related to Ph.D., fabrication found in educational and reservation documents, candidate is found ineligible, involved in plagiarism in paper publications and thesis.
Provisional eligibility to appear in the selection process is no guarantee for admission to the program.
Candidates who will join PhD program full time, they will be provided with the stipend as per MITWPU norms.

About Ph.D. Programme
The Ph.D. Programme at SUN is designed for candidates to solve mainly real time industrial, local, regional, national and inter-national issues/problems. This is a win-win situation for the University and the Industry where the Ph.D. scholar gets exposed to challenging problems which has immediate impact on the industries and societal welfare.
Eligibility criteria for admission to Ph.D Programme:
- Candidates for admission to the Ph.D. Programme shall have a Master's degree of a Recognised University with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade 'B' in the UGC 7-point scale or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed.
- A relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% to 50%, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (with non-creamy layer)/NT/SBC/PwD.
- Candidates who have cleared the M.Phil. Course work with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade 'B' in the UGC 7-point scale or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed and successfully completing the M.Phil. Degree. A relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% to 50%, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (with non-creamy layer)/NT/SBC/PwD.
Duration of the Programme:
- Ph.D. Programme shall be for a minimum duration of three years for full time and four years for part time, including coursework and a maximum of {(n + 2) + 1*} years, where n is the minimum duration of the Programme.
- Extension beyond the above limits may be granted by the Vice-Chancellor for 1* year (or more in some special case) given through the recommendation of Research Advisory Committee (RAC).
- The women candidates and Persons with more than 40% disability may be allowed a relaxation of two years for Ph.D. in the maximum duration. In addition, the women candidates may be provided Maternity Leave/Child Care Leave up to 240 days once in the entire duration of Ph.D. Programmeme.
Ph.D Selection Procedure
The list of all eligible candidates who apply for Ph.D Programme will be displayed on the Institute website. The eligible candidates will be invited for the Written Test (SUN Ph.D. Entrance Test-SUNPET) at SUN Campus
Eligibility Criteria For Admission To Ph.D Programme:
- Entrance Test Part – I shall consist of research methodology. The syllabus for the same and the model MCQs are available on the website. This will be common to all discipline.
- Entrance Test Part - II shall be discipline specific, such as civil engineering, chemistry, law, physics …etc., the syllabus and the model MCQs for each discipline are available on website.
- Candidates with visual impairment will have to indicate the impairment in the application form. They will be provided with a scribe for the written test.
- Candidates who have qualified M.Phil. UGC-NET, JRF, UGC-CSIR, SLET, GATE, CAT etc. are exempted from attending the SUNPET. However, they have to apply by filling the application form along with the application fee and attested copies of necessary documents. They have to appear for personal interview. The candidates securing 50% marks in SUNPET (Average of Part-I & II) will be shortlisted for personal interview. The list of shortlisted candidates will be displayed on the SUN website.
- Research Advisory Committee (RAC) consists of Dean (Academics) as Chairperson and Dean (Research) as Member Secretary and Senior Dean, Senior Head of the Department (of Professor or Associate Professor Level), One Professor/Associate Professor and One Assistant Professor, appointed by Vice Chancellor as members, will prepare the final list of selected candidates by considering the overall merit index of the candidate which will be arrived at by taking into account the candidate’s academic performance and the performance in personal interview. The rubrics for assessment (overall merit index) will be notified on website shortly.
Duration of The Programme:
- The RAC will convene a meeting of all the recognised supervisors of concerned discipline, in which the allocation of Research Supervisor and Co-Supervisor (if required) for a selected research scholar shall be decided depending on the number of scholars per Research Supervisor, the available Specialisation among the Supervisors and research interests of the scholars as indicated by them at the time of Personal Interview. The Doctoral Committee (DC) consists of Supervisor as Chairperson, Co supervisor (if required) and one external and one internal faculty (of Professor or Associate Professor Level) as members, appointed by Dean of concerned school with approval of Vice Chancellor, will supervise the candidate’s work during the entire Ph.D. Programme.
- All finally selected candidates are required to submit the original certificates as mentioned in their application form for verification.
- The Dean(Research) will forward the list of finally selected candidates, along with the name of supervisors (& co-supervisor, if any) for the approval of the Vice-Chancellor for the provisional registration of the candidates.
- The Candidates whose registration has been approved by the Vice Chancellor shall be provisionally admitted to the Ph.D. Programme by the Dean(Research) with intimation to the concerned Dean of School, HOD, Supervisor, the Candidate, and the sponsoring industry, if any. The letter of provisional admission shall be issued by Dean (Research) and Registrar.
- Selected candidates are expected to pay fees (for one calendar year) on the date mentioned in admission letter.The Ph.D Programme will begin by the start on a date as indicated in the admission letter
Important Instructions
Ph.d admissions rules.
- Canvassing in any matter for securing admission shall render a candidate disqualified.
- Eligibility rules as specified for the course shall be strictly followed and shall not be relaxed under any circumstances. Candidate should verify himself/herself that he/she fulfill the eligibility requirements prescribed for admission to Ph.D. Programmeme.
- Application forms may be rejected if in case of the following, and no correspondence shall be entertained in this regard. No relaxation in the last date shall be granted. i.Incomplete Application ii.Received without requisite fee iii.Received after the last date iv. Received with Invalid documents.
- PwD candidates must submit a written request for the same at least seven days before the scheduled date for the Test in the SUN Office.
- PwD candidates who have been provided with a scribe may be given an additional time of 30 minutes.
- The SUN reserves the right to make changes in the notified Admission Test Schedule.
- No separate intimation letters will be sent to the candidates short-listed for SUNPET/PI. The lists of Candidates selected for admission will be displayed on the SUN Website.
- No waiting list shall be displayed on the Website. A separate intimation letters will be sent to the candidates offered course through waiting List.
- No correspondence shall be made to candidate not selected for admission. Similarly, the Application fee shall not be refunded in any case.
- Selected Candidates shall not be allowed to complete admission formalities in absentia.
- Candidates not reporting for admission on the stipulated date and time, shall forfeit his/her claim for admission. The offer of admission shall stand cancelled and no correspondence in this regard shall be entertained.
- Candidate is required to produce all the documents in original as mentioned in the application form, failing which he/she shall not be allowed to get the admission, and the offer of admission shall stand cancelled and no further correspondence in the matter shall be entertained.
- Employed Candidates selected for admission to full/part time Ph. D. course of study in the university, are required to produce No Objection Certificate mentioning the Leave Sanction/Relieving Order at the time of admission from their employer for the duration of the course permitting them to pursue their Ph.D. at SUN, failing which the offer of admission shall stand withdrawn. The part time Research Scholar shall have to stay in premises of SUN during course work.
- Receipt for deposits should be carefully preserved and returned at the time of leaving the Institute for refund of caution money deposit.
Fees & Fellowship
Tuition fees: engineering & application / pharmacy /management / commerce / law.
The full time/part time research scholars shall have to pay academics fee (tuition fee & development fee) Rs.99,000 per annum, examination fees (Rs.5000 per semester) and RAC fee (Rs.10000 as applicable) for first three years. In addition to academics fees they shall have to pay caution money deposit (Rs.10000, refundable) & registration fee (Rs.10000) at the time of admission as per norms of SUN. Thesis evaluation fee (Rs.50000) is applicable during final thesis submission as per norms of SUN. Extension of admission tenure above three years will incur extra fees in addition to the fee mentioned above as per norms of SUN.

Research fellowships.
The full time candidates who have passed the NET/SLET/GATE/CLAT/CAT/UGC-CSIR etc. with good percentage/percentile of marks and with good consistent academic record with excellent performance in personal interview may be considered for SUN Research Fellowship (up to Rs.16000 per month and contingency grant up to Rs.25000 per annum). The performance of research scholar, with fellowship shall be critically reviewed every six months.
Accomodation
All full time research scholars will be accommodated in hostel by paying the necessary fees as per norms.
Research Fellows are entitled for a maximum period of 30 days of leave in a year in addition to public holidays. They are not entitled to any other vacations.Women candidates are eligible for maternity leave of 90 days at full rates of fellowship once during the tenure of their award.

Formerly known as Nagpur University, Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU) was established in 1923 and is one of the oldest universities in India. It is accredited with 'A' grade by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and is ranked as one of the top universities of India. In addition to undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, RTMNU offers admission to the following research courses:

Only candidates who possess the relevant qualifying degree i.e. masters degree are eligible for admission to research courses. For admission to M.Phil, candidates are shortlisted on the basis of marks obtained PET I Entrance Exam. Whereas, the selection of candidates for Ph.D. is done on the basis of performance in the university entrance examination known as PET II (Ph.D. Entrance Test) . The admission process generally starts in the month of December.

For m.phil admissions:, candidate must possess a master's degree in the respective course from a recognized university., candidate must have passed the masters degree with at least 50% aggregate of marks., for phd admissions: , candidates must have completed his/her master's degree from a recognized university in the relevant subject of ph.d. degree., candidate should have scored at least 50% marks (45% for reserved seats in maharashtra) in their qualifying degree., candidate should be graduate with a certificate from research and recognition committee are also eligible. such candidates should have at least 15 years of work experience in the related area., members of institute of chartered accountants or institute of cost and works accountants with a work experience of 5 years are also eligible., there is no age bar..
The following group of candidates will be exempted from PET:
- Candidate who have qualified GATE/SET/NET/JRF examination
- Candidate who possess an M.Phil. Degree in the concerned course from any university.
- Candidate with Ph.D. degree in any faculty or say, stream.
- Candidate working as a full time teacher with a minimum of 7 years of experience or an Officer not below class II rank in any university.

Admission Process
Candidates will be selected on the basis of marks scored in the qualifying exam and scores obtained in PET I Entrance Test.
Note: The course will commence once 10 students are admitted.
For Ph.D Admissions:
The candidates will be selected on the basis of marks scored in pet ii (phd entrance test)., entrance examination details:.
- The test is conducted once every year, in the month of December.
- PET-I will be of 90 minutes duration based on General Research Aptitude and will consist of 100 multiple choice questions of 1 mark each. There will also be negative marking of 0.25 marks for every wrong answer. The exam will be held online in designated exam centers. The medium of exam can be Hindi, Marathi, or English.
- The paper will contain 100 multiple Choice Question based on Analytical Reasoning, Numerical Ability and Language Competency/ Computer/ Environment/ Logical Reasoning and Data Interpretation
- PET-II will be of 2 hour duration and of 50 marks. Candidate will have the choice of attempting any 5 questions out of 8 questions and each question will be of 10 marks.

- Application forms shall be filled through online mode available at the website of Designated Agency and submitted to the university by post within the stipulated time
- Duly filled-in applications should be mailed along with the certificates and and prescribed examination fee in the form of Demand Draft (DD). DD should be drawn in favour of “ Registrar, Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University, Nagpur” and payable at Nagpur.
- Candidates have to pay the examination fee of INR 800/- (INR 600/- for reserved seats in Maharashtra) along with the applications to complete the registration process
