Students will be able to write two explanatory paragraphs about their name.

Introduction

  • Ask students: When you think about your name, what emotions do you feel (if any)? Why? Give students a minute of thinking time, then have some students share.
  • Explain that today, students will be learning and sharing more about their names. They will first read a story about a girl whose name had a special meaning, but who experienced many different emotions about her name. Tell students that it is a story that they may be able to relate to in one way or another.

ACTIVITY PURPOSE

The purpose of this activity is to get to know people’s name on a more personal level through storytelling.

  • An icebreaker activity on the first day of class or group meeting.
  • Learning about people’s lived experience and culture.
  • Helping people remember each other’s name by attaching a story to it.
  • Building relationships of trust in a new group.
  • Creating a safe space for people to share about their background.

PREPARATION

  • No preparation needed by participants.
  • Facilitator could create a slide with name of activity and questions.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Describe activity and why doing it: namely, invite each participant in turn to tell a story about any part of their name (first name, last name, middle name, nickname)
  • Tell people why you find it interesting and helpful to hear the story of someone’s name
  • Explain they can share as much or little as they are comfortable
  • How was your name chosen?
  • Were you named after someone?
  • Does it have any cultural or historical meaning?
  • Is there a story or experience related to your name you would like to share?
  • Let them know it can be first name, and/or last name
  • Let them know they have 2 minutes to share. If using Zoom you can set a timer.
  • If people are going into a breakout room ask that someone be assigned as timer, note taker, and person who will share back.
  • Set up a collaborative document such as a Google doc or OneDrive so that the small groups can write down their stories. Then add in a shared space so that others can read everyone’s story at a later time.
  • If less than 10 people you can facilitate as whole group.
  • If more than 10 people, suggest putting people into groups of 3-4.
  • 3-5 minutes explaining the activity, why you are doing it, and putting people into groups if needed.
  • 2 minutes per person to share story.
  • If people shared in small groups 1-2 minutes for each group to share something back that they learned.
  • 5 minutes to wrap-up and highlight importance of what they learned, how connects to the community and ways they will be working together.

ADAPTATIONS AND EXAMPLES

  • Alternative tools could be an asynchronous discussion tool such as Voicethread, Flipgrid, Yellowdig or LMS discussion.
  • An adaptation could be sharing the story of a nick-name.

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • If a large group suggest using breakout rooms.
  • Google docs or other collaborative tools can be used as a way for small groups to share their stories in their small group, and then they can be shared so the whole class can see them.

“What’s in a Name?”

Students come from a wide range of ethnic, racial and religious backgrounds. In some cases, students’ names may sound unfamiliar to their teachers or peers. If school community members fear mispronouncing a student’s name, they may inadvertently exclude or marginalize that student in social or academic spheres. In this project, students learn about each others’ names, explore name meanings and related family stories, and brainstorm strategies for respectfully approaching unfamiliar names. Finally, students create artistic plaques to display their names within their cultural or personal contexts.

  • Markers, colored pencils, water-based paint and/or colored wood markers

1. Identify Learning Goals

Educators can choose the themes that will guide a class discussion about names. The following recommendations may help:

K–2: “I celebrate my name because it was given to me by people who love me, and my name identifies me.”

“My name identifies my belonging in the world (my last name is a family name shared by other people in my family), and my name is how I introduce myself to others.”

3–5: “Every name is given for a reason. Every name has a meaning, and there are no accidental or arbitrary names.”

2. Lead a Class Discussion

Educators can introduce the discussion by sharing a story for reflection and then using the discussion questions to guide the conversation.

K–2: “ My Name Song ” by CocoMelon Nursery Rhymes & Kids Songs

3–5: The Name Jar by Yangsook Choi. Be sure to include the introduction:

“I often find it very hard to pronounce foreign names. It takes me a while as a teacher. I have an accent and a speech impediment. I can relate to some of the kids who try to pronounce Unhei's name. It's not always easy!

“Unhei has just left her Korean homeland and come to America with her parents. Kids on her school bus can't seem to pronounce her name, so when Unhei gets to school she refuses to give her friends her name. Her friends decide to choose a name for her using the name jar, but Unhei loves her name because it was picked by her grandmother.”

These questions can guide the discussion:

  • Who named you and why were you given your name? 
  • What meanings does your name have for you? 
  • What hopes and dreams does your name hold for the people who gave you your name?
  • Is your name easy for other people at school to pronounce? Do other students in your school have the same name? 
  • Is your name difficult for people at school to pronounce? Are you the only one in your school with this name? How does this make you feel? 
  • Have you ever heard someone get teased because of their name? 
  • What could you and your friends say or do if you witness someone being teased because of their name? 
  • What can you do if a classmate has a name that is difficult for you to pronounce?  If you have a name that is challenging for other students to pronounce, what can you do to help them learn your name?

3. Create Your Name Plaque

Students and teachers create name-art plaques, decorating their names with pictures and patterns to express qualities with which they identify.

Print dome-shaped templates (below) on cardstock paper, or purchase woodblocks. Have students cut the templates out. Use markers, colored pencils or water-based paint to create the name plaques. 

To help students consider what to add to their plaques, you might ask:

“What is it about you that makes you unique? There are many people named John, for example, but who are you, this unique person who has the name John?”

Display the group of name art pieces together to show the unique characteristics that comprise the spirit of your class.

Equitable Teaching

In this icebreaker activity, students will have the option to share their first name, middle name, last name, nickname or any name that has a history or story such as the name of a pet or nickname given to a friend or family member. Students might consider the significance of the name, where the name comes from, or what particular meaning the name has for them.

While this activity is intended to be inclusive, there are some considerations for you to make when implementing it in class. For some students, their name story may require them to disclose personal information that they may not be ready to share in such a setting. For example, a transgender student may not feel comfortable discussing their name as it may require that they disclose their transgender identity. For other students, their family name may be triggering as it relates to a part of their identity that is associated with trauma.

For these reasons, it is best to not use this activity on the first day of class. If you do plan on using this activity, give students advance notice that it will be used in a future class and let them know of the different options they have when it comes to discussing a name that has meaning to them. Furthermore, students should never be forced to participate in an activity they do not feel comfortable participating in, and this should be announced to the class as well.

Activity Goals:

  • To help build community by having students share a name that has particular significance for them.
  • To give a sense of the variety of cultures, identities, and histories that students bring with them to the classroom.

Application in a STEM Course:

Fostering a sense of community in your classroom can create a sense of belonging. According to a CRLT study on retention in STEM courses , “students reported that classroom climate (including their anxiety levels, how welcome they felt in class…and instructor rapport with students) significantly influenced their decisions to stay in or leave STEM disciplines.” If students feel that they are part of a community, they will feel more comfortable engaging and participating in the classroom. Moreover, it will increase the likelihood of them persisting in the STEM field. The Name Story is a great way for students to learn each other’s names and to make personal connections at the same time. Taking the time to complete this activity will allow for students to get to know each other better at the start of the semester, setting them up to better collaborate throughout the semester.

Application in a Large Course:

Cooperative learning and small group approaches in a large course can greatly benefit student learning, engagement, and overall sense of community.  Research has shown  that leveraging such approaches can lead to the development of key skills such as active listening, empathy, consensus building, leadership, constructive conflict management and resolution as well as decreasing racial prejudice while increasing interracial tolerance. This activity allows students in your large course to learn from and about each other and to reduce the feeling of anonymity that can be pervasive in a large course setting. Additionally, although it is a difficult task, making an effort to get to know students names is still a recommended strategy . By making your large course feel smaller through this activity, you are actively working toward making a more inclusive space for all students.

Application in an Online Course:

Online learning can feel impersonal and disconnected, but there are inclusive teaching practices you can leverage to build community and connection in your online course. Taking the time to get to know each other’s names and accompanying stories through this activity can help build trust between students, which is a key indicator of whether or not students feel comfortable participating. In one study , researchers asked the question, “What did graduate students who were enrolled in an online course about teaching online find most valuable about online moderation and community building?” From the study, students stated that Student Needs and Community Building were essential components to online learning. Regarding Student Needs , one student stated, “It is necessary that everyone feels safe, comfortable, and welcomed before they will fully engage, enabling them to make personal connections and grow from each other. Regarding Community Building , another student stated, “Learning communities often develop naturally in a traditional classroom environment, but in an online course, the instructor must make that happen.”

What is a notice of assignment?

An assignment takes place when one party is holding a right to property, claims, bills, lease, etc., of another party and wishes to pass it along (or sell it) to a third party. As complicated as that sounds, it really isn’t. Strangely enough, many assignments can be made under the law without immediately informing, or obtaining the permission, of the personal obligated to perform under the contract. An example of this is when your mortgage is sold to another mortgage company. The original mortgage company may not inform you for several weeks, and they certainly aren’t going to ask your permission to make the sale.

If a person obligated to perform has received notice of the assignment and still insists on paying the initial assignor, the person will still be obligated to pay the new assignee according to the agreement. If the obligated party has not yet been informed of the assignment and pays the original note holder (assignor), the assignor is obligated to turn those funds over to the new assignee. But, what are the remedies if this doesn’t take place? Actually, the new assignee may find themselves in a difficult position if the assignor simply takes off with their funds or payment. They are limited to taking action against the person they bought the note from (assignor) and cannot hold the obligator liable. Therefore, it is important to remember that if any note or obligation is assigned to another party, each party should be well aware of their responsibilities in the transaction and uphold them according to the laws of their state. Assignment forms should be well thought out and written in a manner which prevents the failure of one party against another.

What is the difference between assignment, valuation and name binding?

I read that Name binding assigns some value (data/code/expression) to an identifier . Assignment and valuation seem to do the same thing. It is confusing. Can I just tell that free variable is one, which was not assigned a value whereas bound variable has its value assigned?

Binding has to do with giving names to things (or values) in a given well delimited context. Assignment is about storing things (or values) in some location (a variable). Another assignment can replace a previous value with a new one. Valuation consist in binding all the identifiers of a formal text with something (with a value). In mathematics these identifiers are often called variables, which causes a confusion with the concept of variable (i.e. memory storage) in computer science.

Trying to give more intuitive details

Name binding attaches a meaning to identifiers within some part (called scope) of the concerned mathematical or programming text. This meaning can indeed be seen as a value in some domain when the text is interpreted.

For example, if you declare foo as an integer variable, the value attached to foo within the scope is an integer variable. An integer variable may be seen informally a a container that can carry an integer value, which may be changed. You can also see it as the address of a place in memory where the content may be stored.

But if you declare foo as the integer 25, then whithin the scope, any use of foo is identical to a use of 25. If you declare foo as an integer constant, it cannot change and thus its value must be specified.

Binding is attaching a name to some value that does not change within the scope of the name. An example is a legal documents stating that " for the purpose of this document, Mr. Brown, and the Smith family shall be called the beneficiary. " The scope is the legal document. And everywhere in the document, the use of the word beneficiary means Mr. Brown, and the Smith family. You can see it as a definition of a local terminology. It has to do with giving names to things. Binding is about speaking, reading or writing. It is not about executing or moving values around: that corresponds to assignment.

A variable may be seen as a chunk of memory that can contain a value, When you have a variable, you can change the value contained in this variable contains with an assignment. If foo is bound to (or denotes) a variable in the current scope, you can assign a value to foo , i.e. to the variable denoted by foo , or read the value contained in that variable. And you can change that value with a new assignment.

So binding is an operation that tells what is the meaning of names in the text of the program or of the mathematical discourse. It is static, in the sense that the text does not change. But assignment is a programming concept that consist is storing a value in a variable, i.e. a container, which is usually a place in memory. It is a dynamic concept related to how (representations of) values are stored in memory, which changes as the program progresses.

Note that a variable may exist independently of any name to which it could be bound. This is the case for an element of an array, to take a simple example.

In various contexts, one may consider expressions or texts that use names that have not been defined. For example you can write $(a^2-b^2)/(a-b)$ which is an arithmetic expression. Then you may valuate the variables by associating an environment (you may read approximately a scope) where the variables $a$ and $b$ are bound to some values, for example 3 and 12, and be interested in the value taken by the exression. A valuation is such an association of a set of names, each with a specific value. The name valuation is used more in formal mathematics, while assigment is a programming concept.

When variable is bound to some value during program execution, we say it was assigned and we prefer to say valuated in the formal/cs context instead.   • 2 $\begingroup$ @RecognizeEvilasWaste I have attempted to clarify. But there is a difficulty due to the fact that mathematical terminology conflicts with computer science terminology. A variable cannot be bound to some value, a variable is assigned a value. An identifier is bound to a meaning, but the formal notion of meaning is some value in a semantics domain. You do not assign identifiers, you do not bind variables. Identifiers are syntax, speech. Variables are memory, used to store information.   • 2 $\begingroup$ Your confusion is understandable. In lambda calculus, the word variable is used for what I call identifier. More generally, there is a whole branch of programming, called functional programming, that is not supposed to use assignment. So, in principle everything is done through binding, but it gives a very different style of programming. Lambda calculus is the basic formal example of that. But I always have difficulty which term to use when I want to say similar things.
