In the early 20th century, cars roared into society and revolutionized modern life. Automobiles and their attendant culture molded labor practices , the fight for civil rights , cities, the arts, social life and the environment in radical—and dangerous—ways.

Artists who observed these changes responded with a range of emotions, from fervent admiration to horror. Now, “ Automania ”—a new exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City—takes readers on a ride through some of these responses, from an Andy Warhol silkscreen to Robert Frank photographs and a car hood painted by Judy Chicago.

As Lawrence Ulrich reports for the New York Times , the show takes its title from “ Automania 2000 ,” an Oscar-nominated 1963 short animated by married British artists Joy Batchelor and John Halas . In the film, which art enthusiasts can watch online , a consumer craze for automobiles leads scientists to develop “40-foot supercars” that house families consigned to eating petroleum-based foods and ceaselessly watching television. Eventually, the crush of vehicles clogs roads, and the cars themselves spin out of control.

The bulk of the exhibition takes place on MoMA’s third floor. But viewers can also wander downstairs to the outdoor sculpture garden and peer into the windows of several exceptional car designs. Per a statement , nine cars from the museum’s permanent collection are stationed throughout the show, including a famed mint-green “ Beetle ” and a rare Cisitalia 202 , a cherry-red 1946 racing car that owes it curved, seamless appearance to Italian workers who hammered its metal frame by hand.

Brett Berk of Vanity Fair notes that MoMA was among the first museums to treat cars as design objects, hosting the exhibition “ 8 Automobiles ” in 1951. In the show’s catalog , then-curator Arthur Drexler made the (intentionally) provocative claim that automobiles were a kind of “hollow, rolling sculpture,” according to the Times .

Some artists found themselves enamored with the form and power of these new machines. In Italian futurist Giacomo Balla’s Speeding Automobile (1912), shards of white, black, red and green seem to explode out of the canvas in an abstract composition evocative of the energy of a race car.

Other artists reckoned with cars’ deadly potential. Today, crash injuries are estimated to be the eighth leading cause of death for people of all ages around the world. Pop artist Andy Warhol probed the routine horror of fatal crashes and their coverage in the media in Orange Car Crash Fourteen Times (1963), which reproduced the same newspaper image of a deadly collision on an enormous 9- by 14-foot canvas, as Peter Saenger reports for the Wall Street Journal .

Beyond the immediate bodily harm posed by vehicles, artists have also reckoned with their vast environmental cost. In a series of photocollages from the late 1960s, Venezuelan architect Jorge Rigamonti captured the dystopian industrial landscape of his home country, which is one of the biggest exporters of oil in the world. Pollutants also appear in an 1898 lithograph by French post-Impressionist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, which shows a male motorist speeding ahead, spewing a cloud of thick smoke over a nearby woman and dog.

Visitors unable to explore the exhibition in person can listen to online audio tours adapted for both adults and children . In one recording, Chicago—the groundbreaking artist who created The Dinner Party (1979) and ushered in a new wave of American feminist art —explains that her work in the exhibition, Flight Hood , was inspired by her time as the only woman in a 250-person auto body school. In 2011, she painted this car hood with a “nascent butterfly” form that references her first husband, who died in an automobile crash.

Cars and car culture have long been tied to Western notions of manliness and rugged individuality . By using a piece of metal so often associated with masculinity as her canvas, Chicago subverted expectations.

“This work is based on a series of paintings that my painting instructors hated,” she recalls in the clip. “… I understood, intuitively, that this imagery that my male painting teachers had rejected because it was so female centered, that there was something subversive about mounting it on the most masculine of forms—a car hood.”

Lead curator Juliet Kinchin , who organized the exhibition with Paul Galloway and Andrew Gardner, also sought to emphasize women’s contributions to the male-dominated auto design industry. Relevant artifacts include textile artist Anni Albers’ upholstery materials and designer Lilly Reich’s 1930 sketches for a folding car seat .

“Women have actually been featured in these stories from the beginning,” Kinchin tells Vanity Fair . “That was something we wanted to tease out.”

All told, Galloway says that he hopes the exhibition pushes museumgoers to reconsider their relationships with their vehicles.

“This is absolutely a moment when we’re rethinking our history with things that we used to love and cherish,” he tells Vanity Fair , “and acknowledging that some of those things maybe were poisonous, or bad ideas, or death traps.”

“ Automania ” is on view at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City through January 2, 2022.

Let’s take a look…

100 Words Essay on Vehicles

Introduction.

Vehicles are modes of transport. They help us move from one place to another quickly and comfortably. They come in many types, like cars, buses, bikes, and trucks.

Types of Vehicles

Vehicles can be classified into two main types: motor vehicles and non-motor vehicles. Motor vehicles include cars, buses, and trucks. Non-motor vehicles are bicycles, skateboards, or scooters.

Importance of Vehicles

Vehicles are important because they save time and energy. They help us in carrying heavy goods and in travelling long distances. They also play a crucial role in emergencies.

In conclusion, vehicles are an essential part of our lives. They make our lives easier by providing quick and comfortable transport.

250 Words Essay on Vehicles

Vehicles, as an integral part of modern society, have revolutionized the way we travel and transport goods. They are more than mere machines; they are symbols of human ingenuity and technological advancement.

The Evolution of Vehicles

The evolution of vehicles can be traced back to the invention of the wheel in ancient times. From horse-drawn carriages to steam-powered locomotives, and finally to the contemporary era of fuel-powered and electric vehicles, the journey has been remarkable. The evolution has been driven by the human desire for speed, efficiency, and comfort.

Impact on Society

Vehicles have significantly impacted society, shaping our cities and influencing our lifestyles. They have made remote areas accessible, fueled economic growth, and even changed the dynamics of warfare. However, they have also contributed to environmental challenges like air pollution and global warming.

The Future of Vehicles

With advancements in technology, the future of vehicles looks promising. Autonomous vehicles, powered by artificial intelligence, are expected to redefine transportation. Electric vehicles, with their environmental benefits, are set to replace traditional fuel-powered vehicles.

Vehicles, from their inception to their future prospects, have always been at the forefront of technological progress. They encapsulate the human spirit of innovation and our relentless pursuit of better, faster, and more sustainable ways of transportation. As we move forward, it is imperative to balance our need for speed and convenience with our responsibility towards the environment.

500 Words Essay on Vehicles

The journey of vehicles began with simple, human or animal-powered modes of transportation like carts and carriages. The industrial revolution in the 18th century marked a pivotal point in vehicle evolution with the advent of steam-powered engines. However, it was the invention of the internal combustion engine in the late 19th century that truly transformed the vehicle landscape, leading to the development of modern cars.

In the 20th century, vehicles became more than just a means of transportation; they became symbols of status, freedom, and personal identity. The mass production of vehicles, initiated by Henry Ford, made them affordable and accessible to the average person, further embedding them into our societal fabric.

Significance of Vehicles

Vehicles also have a profound social impact. They enable personal mobility, bridging geographical distances and bringing people closer. They’ve shaped urban development, influencing the layout of cities and suburbs. Moreover, the vehicle industry has been a significant source of employment and technological innovation.

Environmental Impact and Sustainability

While vehicles offer numerous benefits, they also pose environmental challenges. They’re major contributors to air pollution and climate change due to the emission of greenhouse gases. The vehicle industry also consumes vast amounts of natural resources, from fossil fuels for operation to metals for production.

The future of vehicles is poised to be as transformative as their past. Autonomous vehicles, powered by artificial intelligence, are on the horizon, promising to redefine transportation. They have the potential to improve road safety, reduce traffic congestion, and provide mobility to those unable to drive.

In addition, the concept of shared mobility is gaining traction, driven by the rise of ride-sharing platforms. This could lead to a decrease in vehicle ownership, reducing the number of vehicles on the road and their environmental impact.

Vehicles have come a long way from their humble beginnings. They’ve transformed our lives, societies, and the world at large. As we move towards a more sustainable and connected future, vehicles will continue to evolve, adapting to our changing needs and challenges. They stand as a testament to human ingenuity and the relentless pursuit of progress.

Unlike many other major inventions, the original idea of the automobile cannot be attributed to a single individual. The idea certainly occurred long before it was first recorded in the Iliad , in which Homer (in Alexander Pope ’s translation) states that Vulcan in a single day made 20 tricycles, which

Wondrous to tell instinct with spirit roll’ed From place to place, around the blest abodes, Self-moved, obedient to the beck of gods.

Leonardo da Vinci considered the idea of a self-propelled vehicle in the 15th century. In 1760 a Swiss clergyman, J.H. Genevois, suggested mounting small windmills on a cartlike vehicle, their power to be used to wind springs that would move the road wheel . Genevois’s idea probably derived from a windmill cart of about 1714. Two-masted wind carriages were running in the Netherlands in 1600, and a speed of 20 miles (30 km) per hour with a load of 28 passengers was claimed for at least one of them. The first recorded suggestion of wind use was probably Robert Valturio’s unrealized plan (1472) for a cart powered by windmills geared to the wheels.

Other inventors considered the possibilities of clockwork. Probably in 1748 a carriage propelled by a large clockwork engine was demonstrated in Paris by the versatile inventor Jacques de Vaucanson .

The air engine is thought to have originated with a 17th-century German physicist, Otto von Guericke . Guericke invented an air pump and was probably the first to make metal pistons, cylinders, and connecting rods, the basic components of the reciprocating engine. In the 17th century a Dutch inventor, Christiaan Huygens , produced an engine that worked by air pressure developed by explosion of a powder charge. Denis Papin of France built a model engine on the vacuum principle, using the condensation of steam to produce the vacuum. An air engine was patented in England in 1799, and a grid of compressor stations was proposed to service vehicles. An air-powered vehicle is said to have been produced in 1832.

Steam propulsion was proposed as early as the 16th century, and in 1678 Ferdinand Verbiest , a Belgian Jesuit missionary to China, made a model steam carriage based on a principle suggestive of the modern turbine.

In the 18th century a French scientist, Philippe Lebon , patented a coal-gas engine and made the first suggestion of electrical ignition. In Paris, Isaac de Rivas made a gas-powered vehicle in 1807; his engine used hydrogen gas as fuel, the valves and ignition were operated by hand, and the timing problem appears to have been difficult.

essay on uses of car

Most historians agree that Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot of France was the constructor of the first true automobile. Cugnot’s vehicle was a huge, heavy, steam-powered tricycle , and his model of 1769 was said to have run for 20 minutes at 2.25 miles (3.6 km) per hour while carrying four people and to have recuperated sufficient steam power to move again after standing for 20 minutes. Cugnot was an artillery officer, and the more or less steam-tight pistons of his engine were made possible by the invention of a drill that accurately machined cannon bores . A replica of Cugnot’s second vehicle, partially original, is preserved in the Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers in Paris.

Cugnot’s successors were soon at work, notably in England, although the first post-Cugnot steam carriage appears to have been built in Amiens, France, in 1790. Steam buses were running in Paris about 1800. Oliver Evans of Philadelphia ran an amphibious steam dredge through the streets of that city in 1805. Less well known were Nathan Read of Salem, Massachusetts, and Apollos Kinsley of Hartford, Connecticut, both of whom ran steam vehicles during the period 1790–1800. In March 1863 the magazine Scientific American described tests of a vehicle that weighed only 650 pounds (about 300 kg) and achieved a speed of 20 miles (30 km) per hour. Another American, Frank Curtis of Newburyport, Massachusetts, is remembered for building a personal steam carriage to the order of a Boston man who failed to meet the payment schedule, whereupon Curtis made the first recorded repossession of a motor vehicle.

English inventors were active, and by the 1830s the manufacture and use of steam road carriages was flourishing . James Watt ’s foreman, William Murdock , ran a model steam carriage on the roads of Cornwall in 1784, and Robert Fourness showed a working three-cylinder tractor in 1788. Watt was opposed to the use of steam engines for such purposes; his low-pressure steam engine would have been too bulky for road use in any case, and all the British efforts in steam derived from the earlier researches of Thomas Savery and Thomas Newcomen .

Richard Trevithick developed Murdock’s ideas, and at least one of his carriages, with driving wheels 10 feet (3 metres) in diameter, ran in London. Sir Goldsworthy Gurney , the first commercially successful steam carriage builder, based his design upon an unusually efficient boiler. He was not, however, convinced that smooth wheels could grip a roadway, and so he arranged propulsion on his first vehicle by iron legs digging into the road surface. His second vehicle weighed only 3,000 pounds (1,360 kg) and was said to be capable of carrying six persons. He made trips as long as 84 miles (135 km) in a running time of 9 hours and 30 minutes and once recorded a speed of 17 miles (27 km) per hour.

Gurney equipment was used on the Gloucester-Cheltenham service of four daily round trips; under favourable conditions the equipment could complete the 9 miles (15 km) in 45 minutes. Between February 27 and June 22, 1831, steam coaches ran 4,000 miles (6,400 km) on this route, carrying some 3,000 passengers. The equipment was noisy, smoky, destructive of roadways, and admittedly dangerous; hostility arose, and it was common for drivers to find the way blocked with heaps of stones or felled trees. Nevertheless, numerous passengers had been carried by steam carriage before the railways had accepted their first paying passenger.

The most successful era of the steam coaches in Britain was the 1830s. Ambitious routes were run, including one from London to Cambridge. But by 1840 it was clear that the steam carriages had little future. They had much to contend with, including the anti-machinery attitude of the public and the enmity of the horse-coach interests, which resulted in such penalties as a charge of £5 for passing a tollgate that cost a horse coach only three pence. The crushing blow was the Locomotives on Highways Act of 1865, which reduced permissible speeds on public roads to 2 miles (3 km) per hour within cities and 4 miles (6 km) per hour in rural areas. This legislation was known as the Red Flag Act because of its requirement that every steam carriage mount a crew of three, one to precede it carrying a red flag of warning. The act was amended in 1878, but it was not repealed until 1896, by which time its provisions had effectively stifled the development of road transport in the British Isles .

The decline of the steam carriage did not prevent continued effort in the field, and much attention was given to the steam tractor for use as a prime mover. Beginning about 1868, Britain was the scene of a vogue for light steam-powered personal carriages; if the popularity of these vehicles had not been legally hindered, it would certainly have resulted in widespread enthusiasm for motoring in the 1860s rather than in the 1890s. Some of the steamers could carry as few as two people and were capable of speeds of 20 miles (32 km) per hour. The public climate remained unfriendly, however.

Light steam cars were being built in the United States , France, Germany, and Denmark during the same period, and it is possible to argue that the line from Cugnot’s lumbering vehicle runs unbroken to the 20th-century steam automobiles made as late as 1926. The grip of the steam automobile on the American imagination has been strong ever since the era of the Stanley brothers —one of whose “ steamers” took the world speed record at 127.66 miles (205.45 km) per hour in 1906. The car designed by them and sold as the Locomobile became the first commercially successful American-made automobile (about 1,000 were built in 1900). It is estimated that in the early 21st century there were still some 600 steam cars in the United States, most of them in running order.

  • Essay On My Car

Essay on My Car

500 words essay on my car.

A car is an essential part of our life. We use the car to travel from one place to another. A car has an engine, four wheels, four doors, one boot, four windows, brakes, accelerators, headlights, etc. The car runs on various fossil fuels like petrol, diesel or CNG. But, today, many car companies are launching cars that run on electricity.

There are a lot of car companies that design cars with ultra-luxurious interiors and exteriors. Every year you get to hear about the launches of new cars, and each car is unique in its way. The car comes in automatic and manual modes, making travel more comfortable and safe. The invention of the car has made transport more accessible and more manageable. It also saves time because it reduces travelling time when compared to public transport systems.

Travelling in a car is always fun and memorable. It is always beneficial to have your own car, especially in emergencies. We don’t have to depend on others to take us to our destination. We can drive by ourselves and reach our destination. If we have our own car, we can explore new places and go for a long drive whenever we feel like it. Travelling in a car is always fun and memorable. It gives us an incredible feeling as we enjoy the ride sitting in the comfy seats, turning on the AC and listening to our favourite songs.

We all dream of buying our own car, but owning one becomes expensive. When we step out of our homes, we see many cars plying on the road. But there are many who can’t afford to buy one.

Memories with My Car

My father owns a KIA Sonata GT Line automatic. It is black in colour, and I love my car. I get excited when I hear that we are going out. Whenever we go out, I sit in the front seat as it gives access to the audio system. I change songs according to my wish and enjoy the drive. My car has ventilated seats in the front and a moonlight effect on the doors. The most exciting part of my car is the sunroof. I love to open the sunroof when I travel long distances to enjoy the scenic beauty.

Recently, I travelled to Ooty in a car. My father was driving the car, and I sat next to him. My mom and my grandparents sat at the backside of the car. It was a long journey, so we stopped in between for breakfast. We listened to songs during the entire trip and stopped in between to take pictures of nature. Once we reached Ooty, we checked into the hotel, and that day we took a rest as it was a hectic journey.

The following day, after we were done with our breakfast, we went sightseeing and clicked pictures for memories. On the third day of our stay, we went to Coonoor in our car. On the way to Coonoor, we clicked pictures near the tea gardens and took a halt for lunch. Coonoor is a place that one should visit without fail. It is a beautiful hill station located in Tamil Nadu. The scenic beauty of Coonoor is breathtaking. The roads go through the tea gardens, and the climate is also enjoyable.

After coming back from Coonoor, we stayed for one night in Ooty and the next morning, we started our journey to Bangalore. It was my first visit to Ooty in our new car, which is why it always remains close to my heart.

The trip from Ooty to Bangalore and vice-versa was comfortable and relaxing just because of our new car. Our car made the journey very smooth, and I never felt like travelling through those stiff, narrow, spiral roads.

Conclusion of Essay on My Car

I am delighted with my father’s choice in terms of the car. Even my mom and grandparents enjoyed the car ride. Not only me, but my father also loves his car and treats it like his second baby. He cleans it every day and is always careful while driving on the road. My car has all the requirements that we need during long travels.

The speed of a car is dependent on the power of its engine. Whether travelling a short or long distance, a car saves time and keeps us safe. Notable car manufacturing companies are Maruti, Hyundai, Mercedes, and Audi. Today, most cars have features like AC, music system, airbags, sunroof, GPS navigation system, and USB charging outlets that enhance the driving experience and ensure our safety. Cars run on fuels like petrol, diesel, and CNG. Electrically charged cars have also become popular in recent times. Driving a car without proper experience can lead to fatal road accidents.

Long Essay On Car

Cars can be used to reduce travel distance and time and can range from simple to the most luxurious ones. Here is an essay for class 3 that can get kids fascinated with cars:

A car is an automobile with four wheels that runs on the road. It is a large, rectangular, or oblong-shaped machine with a platform known as the chassis. Many mechanics and engineers manufacture cars in big factories. The parts of a vehicle come from various factories and are made of steel, iron, rubber, fibreglass, and canvas.

The chaises have two headlamps and two tail lamps. The accelerator, brake, and clutch pedal are situated near the car’s floor. Cars are an integral part of our modern lifestyle, whether we travel within the city or across a continent. The registration number is fixed on the front and back of the car. Cars have four wheels, carry up to five passengers, and are moved by a motor or engine.

Playing with cars, whether a remote-controlled car or any other toy car, helps develop a child’s motor skills. Kids develop hand-eye coordination and dexterity as they lift, throw, carry, push, or pull toy cars.

A car can have many designs and colours. It offers maximum comfort and privacy, making it a smart and beneficial choice. AC, windscreens, and comfortable seats ensure that passengers can travel long distances and enjoy every season. A sunroof, safety belts, airbags, and GPS are other interesting car features that provide passengers safety and enhance their driving experience.

The continuous development of technology has led to the invention of cars. Cars can also transport humans and lightweight materials. Cars require maintenance and can be costlier than travelling by bus. One must drive a car carefully, avoid fast driving, and obey traffic rules.

History Of Cars

In 1769, Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot from France invented the automobile with three wheels. It was heavy in size and used a steam engine. Later, Nikolaus Otto from Germany developed a four-stroke gas engine in 1876, which was more reliable than other varieties. In 1896, Henry Ford developed his first car.

With the establishment of other companies in the 21st century, there was faster innovation in car production. However, ‘hybrid’ cars were most preferred as they run on gasoline and electric power. Consequently, new car advancements have led to several unique features and more safety gadgets to prevent the risk of damage in a car crash. Even the government plans to shift to electric cars that cause less environmental harm.

Types & Features Of Cars

While the classification of cars is mainly based on their body types, here are some of the commonly used varieties of cars in the world.

1. Hatchback

Considered the most common type of car in the world, hatchbacks are suitable for the country’s congested roads. Some brands include the Volkswagen Golf , Ford Fiesta , Toyota Yaris , and Honda Fit .

A Sedan has more space to meet the requirements of families. It ensures adequate space for all requirements. Examples include the Toyota Camry , Honda Accord , BMW 3 Series , and Mercedes-Benz C-Class .

Like a hatchback, a sedan has four doors for passengers and a large boot space that accommodates luggage of varying sizes. Luxury sedans look classy, stylish, and more comfortable.

An SUV or sport-utility vehicle looks stylish and is impeccably strong. Toyota Fortuner, Hyundai Creta, Ford Explorer, Toyota RAV4, Jeep Grand Cherokee, and Nissan X-Trail .

Introduction

An expressway is crowded with cars.

It is hard for anyone today to imagine what life was like before there were cars. Cars and other motor vehicles have made it easy for people to travel within a city or across a continent. They have also influenced where people live. People once had to live near their jobs, but now they can live farther away and drive to work.

Yet cars and other motor vehicles have brought problems as well. Tens of thousands of people are killed or injured each year in traffic accidents. Cities are often congested with huge traffic jams. And gasoline is a limited resource that pollutes the atmosphere when burned as fuel.

Types of Cars

Traditional cars.

A type of SUV called a crossover is smaller and more carlike than the traditional SUV. The crossover became popular in the early 2000s because it did not use as much gasoline.

Concept Cars

When auto companies want to test out a new style or a new technology, they design a concept car. Concept cars are usually unveiled at auto shows, which are large exhibitions of cars from all over the world. Auto companies can then see how customers react to concept cars and decide what concepts should be developed. At first, an idea in a concept car may seem impractical, but after many years of development it may be found in every car on the market. For instance, the first concept car was revealed in 1938, and it included power windows. Fifty years later almost all cars had power windows. Another concept car was one that did not need a human driver, also known as a self-driving car. The concept of a self-driving car was introduced at the 1939 World’s Fair, and by the 2020s there were self-driving cars on the road. The idea of a flying car has been around almost since cars were invented. A practical working model was introduced in the 2020s, although at the time only drivers with a pilot’s license could fly it.

Parts of a Car

Many parts work together to make an automobile run.

How Cars Work

A driver operates a car by pressing on pedals to make it go and stop and by turning the steering wheel to guide where the car goes. The pedals and steering wheel work because they are part of a larger system.

Engine and Related Parts

In an internal-combustion engine a spark plug ignites fuel that is released into a cylinder. The fuel expands, forcing a device called a piston to move. Through the connecting rod, this motion is passed on to a series of devices that provide power to the vehicle.

The air-fuel mixture that enters the engine cannot ignite by itself. It needs an electric spark. This comes from devices called spark plugs. They get their electric current from a battery. The car’s lights, horn, turn signals, windshield wipers, starter, and instruments are also powered by the battery.

An exhaust system carries burned gases from the engine to the muffler. The muffler cools the gases. It also reduces their pressure. This reduces the noise coming from the tailpipe. Modern cars are also equipped with a device called a catalytic converter. The catalytic converter uses chemicals to reduce exhaust pollution.

An internal combustion engine gets very hot. Cars therefore must have a cooling system. In a liquid cooling system, coolant (water and antifreeze) flows through passages around the cylinders and carries off this heat. The hot coolant is then pumped through a radiator to cool it off. Some engines are cooled by a flow of air and have no liquid coolant.

Power Train

The engine provides power to make a car go, but something else must turn the wheels. The parts of the car that transmit, or deliver, power from the engine to the wheels are together called the power train. When a car is starting or moving uphill the engine must deliver more power than when it is cruising on level ground. The transmission uses gears to reduce or increase the speed and power of the engine. The drive shaft carries the power from the transmission to the axle, which connects the wheels.

Other Mechanical Parts

Once a car is moving it is important to be able to make it stop. When a driver presses the brake pedal, pistons force fluid through small, flexible pipes to brakes at each wheel that stop the vehicle.

The wheels of a car are part of a system called the suspension system. This consists of springs that absorb bumps and shock absorbers that cushion the spring movement. The air-filled tires of a car also cushion the ride. The tires have rough surfaces that help keep them from sliding around on slippery or loose surfaces.

Two men ride an early automobile in about 1901. The first cars looked very different than the cars of today.

During this same period other manufacturers produced cars run by electric motors. Electric cars ran smoothly and were easy to operate. However, they did not run well at high speeds. They also had to have their batteries recharged every 50 miles (80 kilometers) or so.

Gas Engines

Étienne Lenoir of France developed a gasoline-powered internal-combustion engine in 1860. In 1876 the German Nikolaus Otto built an improved gasoline engine. Gasoline engines proved to be more reliable than the other kinds. The brothers Charles E. and J. Frank Duryea built the first successful gasoline-powered car in the United States in 1893. Soon several people set up factories to produce cars.

Development of the Automobile Industry

The development of the assembly line made cars, such as the Model T, available to millions of people.

Innovations

In the period after World War I (1914–18), automobiles became easier to operate and more comfortable. Steel bodies and heaters became common.

After World War II (1939–45) automakers began using power steering, power brakes, and automatic controls for windows and seats. Air conditioning also became available.

In the late 1950s, European compact cars like the Volkswagen Beetle caused a sensation. Automakers in the United States built their own compact cars starting in 1959.

The Problem of Oil

The gasoline used in cars comes from oil. As the United States began to use up its own oil supplies, it looked to other countries for more. In 1973 the oil-producing countries stopped shipping as much oil to the countries that needed it. This caused high prices and long lines at gas stations. It also made automakers work to produce cars that did not use as much gasoline. Japanese companies were especially successful at this.

Cars also cause widespread air pollution. As gasoline is burned it produces harmful gases. New types of gasoline and catalytic converters helped ease the problem. Even so, some scientists blame these gases for a problem called global warming . The scientists and others became more concerned in the 1990s. Many drivers had replaced their passenger cars with SUVs. Such automobiles use large amounts of gas and produce more of the harmful gases.

Electric cars run on batteries that have to be charged at special stations.

Automobile safety is a continuing issue. Early cars were very dangerous to ride in. Since then car manufacturers have worked to create safer cars. They installed such devices as seat belts and air bags to protect riders in a crash. They have also tried to improve the way cars are built and the materials used to build cars so that the cars will survive a crash better.

Essay on car

Essay on car in English contains many important information about cars and the various car industry that have witnessed great development over the years. All that information and more you’ll find here in an essay on car in English.

  • Essay on car

Cars from all the time, from horse-drawn vehicles to the newest types of cars in our time, are indispensable. Here we will learn about the most important types of cars and many other information through an essay on car in English.

There is great thanks in the development of the world from various aspects at the present time, both at the industrial and commercial level to the various vehicles and transportation that are used these days, and its continuous development .

Cars and means of transportation have not been invented in the past between day and night;  as we can not return the invention of cars to one person only, as in all inventions and discoveries as well; science and geometry are generally considered cumulative, in which each scientist is completed beyond his predecessors so as to eventually obtain a particular invention or discovery.

The history of the first steam car dates back to 1769 when Nicholas Joseph Kignot invented the first steam-powered car on full scale,  In 1801 Joseph Trevethick also designed a four-wheeled steam engine.

After that, the steam engines were continuously developed and the various systems used were improved,  Until 1885, Karl Baines developed the first gasoline-fueled internal combustion engine, which is still in use today in cars, and has patented it.

Later, in 1896, Henry Ford  manufactured the first four-wheel gasoline-powered vehicle; the first air-pressure tires were manufactured in the previous year and were manufactured by Mechelen.

Since then, the automotive industry has witnessed a very large development; many different designs have been made for cars.

At present, in the 20th and 21st centuries, electric cars has been invented in addition to and hybrid cars which powered by fuel and electricity. The first hybrid car manufactured by Ferdinand Porsche was in 1901.

The car is one of the most important means of development at the present time. It is one of the most advanced means in terms of preserving the environment.

We find that now many cars that are safe for the environment, or as they are called environmentally friendly, are being launched.

Certainly, this safe development that seeks to preserve society is one of the most desirable developments. There are other different means of transportation that are not the same number as cars, or of the same daily importance in terms of use.

For example, no one uses a plane to shop from the supermarket. So I think it’s great that there is a continuous development in the automotive industry. It is good that we did not stop at a specific point.

I like very much that everyone’s life becomes more comfortable and have a means of transportation that helps them save a lot of their daily time. But I would love more that this method be safe for public health as well.

Short essay on car

The car is one of the most popular inventions in the world every day. It is one of the successful inventions in approximating distances and shortening time.

When thinking about how much time is saved for each person according to his daily use, we find that it is very fruitful for those who have daily work in remote and different areas, as it saves time of going and returning.

It is also very useful in snowy countries or that contain a vast desert, where it has become a safe means of transportation everywhere. It also greatly reduces the risks that a person can face under normal circumstances.

Therefore, I find the car very useful and important. The more protection and safety means are developed, cars become more important than before.

Essay about cars

In the current era, speed has become a feature of the era, and this applies to the automobile industry, where it has become more quality, and the speed of cars has increased a lot than before, in addition to the production of economical cars that many people, with middle incomes can buy, in addition to the fact that banks have provided loans to customers With the aim of buying a car in installments, and cars have become bearable for a long time, as most companies provided maintenance centers, which led to the possibility of using the car for a greater number of years, and European countries in general and Germany in particular are considered among the most important centers for the development of the automotive industry.

Paragraph About cars

Despite the tremendous development in the auto industry, there are many people who prefer old cars, and feel that they are more quality, and less expensive, in addition to that they may prefer old cars due to the ease of handling them, as they do not contain high technology, which makes it easier for them to repair Many of the defects that occur with it, and some are emotionally related to the type of car, especially if they used it before, and there are many people who prefer family cars, and this is very suitable for a family of five or more people, where family cars are the most suitable for them in their transportation and their journeys.

Car manufacturers study the needs of customers on an ongoing basis, in order to fulfill their desires to produce distinguished cars that combine quality, beauty and speed. In addition to taking into account that the price of the car is suitable for the category of customers who will use it.

Thus, car manufacturers guarantee the sale of the largest number of cars. It is known that there is great competition between car manufacturers and each company tries to add to its car an advantage in order to attract the largest number of customers,

Importance of car essay

There is no doubt that the car is of great importance in our life. However, I did not realize this importance as I did when my mother fell ill.

We live in a village, about 20 km from the hospital. At twelve o’clock at night, my mother fell ill. And she was in great pain, so I went quickly and got the car and carried my mother and put her on the back seat of the car, where my mother slept on the back seat because she could not sit because of the pain.

I rushed to the hospital, where my mother was operated on. And the doctor told me you saved her because you got her in time.

That’s when I realized the importance of the car. If I hadn’t had a car, I would have been late to take my mother to the hospital.

The manufacturing and use of cars damages the environment but their popularity is increasing.

Why is this?

How could this be controlled?

Even though both production and car use increase pollution, the auto industry continues to expand. This is because developing nations now have greater disposable income and governments can limit the resultant environmental damage through regulation.

The main cause underlying an increasing numbers of cars is growth in developing countries. Ownership in developed countries peaked decades ago and many European nations in particular are now adopting greener modes of transport. However, in developing nations, cars are seen as a status symbol that boost self-esteem and serve a practical travel purpose. Coupled with increased per capita GDP, the boom in car ownership is unsurprising. For example, a growing middle class in Vietnam has driven up purchases of foreign automobiles dramatically over the last decade. The demand is so great that last year a Vietnamese company introduced the first domestically produced car. This same trend is replicated around the world in developing countries.

The most impactful response is from the government. Consumers will continue to buy cars but the government has control over a range of possible environmental protective measures. For example, there could be stricter laws related to emission standards. This would cut down on the average amount of pollution from individual cars and collectively make a huge difference. Another measure would be to discourage car ownership by taxing cars heavily and improving the quality of public transportation. A good example of this would also be in Vietnam where there is a 200% tax on cars and the government is building the world’s most expensive subway system in Ho Chi Minh City. Individuals are unlikely to change their behaviour en masse so it falls to policymakers to dissuade citizens through proactive reforms and policies.

In conclusion, more cars can be explained by rising incomes globally and pragmatic solutions come from government regulation. If taken seriously, the heavy environmental toll of cars can be curbed.

Another measure would be to discourage car ownership by taxing cars heavily and improving the quality of public transportation. A good example of this would also be in Vietnam where there is a 200% tax on cars and the government is building the world’s most expensive subway system in Ho Chi Minh City. Individuals are unlikely to change their behaviour en masse so it falls to policymakers to dissuade citizens through proactive reforms and policies .

In conclusion, more cars can be explained by rising incomes globally and pragmatic solutions come from government regulation . If taken seriously , the heavy environmental toll of cars can be curbed .

'He gotta go': Tyreek Hill calls for firing of officer who pulled him from car

essay on uses of car

Miami Dolphins star wide receiver Tyreek Hill is now calling for the officer who detained him Sunday before the team's season opener to be fired.

Speaking to reporters during a press conference Wednesday, Hill said there was no excuse for how he was treated during what was supposed to be a routine traffic stop.

"He gotta go man," Hill said of the officer. "Cuz in that instance right there, not only did he treat me bad, you know what I'm saying, he also treated my teammates with disrespect. You know, he had some crazy words toward them, and they didn't even do nothing. Like what did they do to you? They just walking on the sidewalk. So I don't know bruh, like he gotta go man."

The incident happened Sunday when the 30-year-old Hill was pulled over by police during a traffic stop outside the Dolphins' Hard Rock Stadium.

Bodycam footage released by the Miami-Dade County Police Department showed an officer repeatedly knocking on Hill's car window telling him, “Keep your window down." Shortly thereafter, the officer opened the door and dragged Hill out of the car, shoving him face down into the roadway and handcuffing him.

Hill’s teammate Calais Campbell was also briefly placed in handcuffs for trying to deescalate the situation. He told Fox Sports he pulled over to see what was going on and stayed where officers told him to stand but that he was still briefly placed in handcuffs.

Hill received a careless driving and seat belt violation, sources told ESPN reporter Jeff Darlington. Campbell said he himself did not receive a citation.

Hill admitted Wednesday that there were some things he wished he would've done differently, but restated that officers mishandled the situation.

"At the end of the day, you know, I'm human," he said. "I gotta follow rules. I gotta, you know, do what, you know, everyone else would do. Now does that give them the right to literally beat the dog out of me? Absolutely not."

Miami-Dade Police Director Stephanie V. Daniels later said that her department would investigate the incident and that one of the officers involved had been placed on administrative duties.

"Following the incident involving Tyreek Hill, I have initiated an Internal Affairs investigation to ensure a thorough review of the matter," Daniels said in a statement.

The eight-time Pro Bowl receiver was ultimately released by officers and went on to secure seven catches for 130 yards and one touchdown in the Dolphins' win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

When asked Wednesday what his plan is moving forward, Hill reiterated he's not going to harp on the situation and is ready to move on.

"I still love cops," he said. "You know, I wanna be a cop."

"I'm not gonna take a knee. I'm not gonna, you know, ask to defund the police. I'm not gonna protest. I'm not gonna do any of that," Hill added. "When it comes to being inside of this, it's football. You know, because this is my therapy. Football is my therapy."
