Healthy food can help you get rid of all this as it does not contain harmful things.

Junk food vs Healthy Food

If we look at the scenario today, we see how the fast-food market is increasing at a rapid rate. With the onset of food delivery apps and more, people now like having junk food more. In addition, junk food is also tastier and easier to prepare.

However, just to satisfy our taste buds we are risking our health. You may feel more satisfied after having junk food but that is just the feeling of fullness and nothing else. Consumption of junk food leads to poor concentration. Moreover, you may also get digestive problems as junk food does not have fiber which helps indigestion.

Similarly, irregularity of blood sugar levels happens because of junk food. It is so because it contains fewer carbohydrates and protein . Also, junk food increases levels of cholesterol and triglyceride.

On the other hand, healthy food contains a plethora of nutrients. It not only keeps your body healthy but also your mind and soul. It increases our brain’s functionality. Plus, it enhances our immunity system . Intake of whole foods with minimum or no processing is the finest for one’s health.

In short, we must recognize that though junk food may seem more tempting and appealing, it comes with a great cost. A cost which is very hard to pay. Therefore, we all must have healthy foods and strive for a longer and healthier life.

“Depending on whom you ask, “healthy eating” may take many forms. It seems that everyone, including healthcare professionals, wellness influencers, coworkers, and family members, has an opinion on the healthiest way to eat. Plus, nutrition articles that you read online can be downright confusing with their contradictory — and often unfounded — suggestions and rules. This doesn’t make it easy if you simply want to eat in a healthy way that works for you.”

Author Jillian Kubala is a registered dietitian and holds a master’s degree in nutrition and an undergraduate degree in nutrition science. In her essay, she says that healthy eating doesn’t have to be complicated and explains how it can nourish your body while enjoying the foods you love. Check out these essays about health .

“Eating provides your body with the nourishment it needs to survive. A healthy diet supplies nutrients (such as protein, vitamins and minerals, fiber, and carbohydrates), which are important for your body’s growth, development, and maintenance. However, not all foods are equal when it comes to the nutrition they provide. Some foods, such as fruits and vegetables, are rich in vitamins and minerals; others, such as cookies and soda pop, provide few if any nutrients. Your diet can influence everything from your energy level and intellectual performance to your risk for certain diseases.”

Author Jaime Padilla talks about the importance of a healthy diet in your body’s growth, development, and maintenance. He also mentioned that having a poor diet can lead to some health problems. Check out these essays about food .

“Eating healthy is about balance and making sure that your body is getting the necessary nutrients it needs to function properly. Healthy eating habits require that people eat fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fats, proteins, and starches. Keep in mind that healthy eating requires that you’re mindful of what you eat and drink, but also how you prepare it. For best results, individuals should avoid fried or processed foods, as well as foods high in added sugars and salts.”

Author Maggie Smith believes there’s a fine line between healthy eating and dieting. In her essay, she mentioned five benefits of eating healthy foods – weight loss, heart health, strong bones and teeth, better mood and energy levels, and improved memory and brain health – and explained them in detail.

“From old generation to the new generation young people are dying out quicker than their own parents due to obesity-related diseases every day. In the mid-1970s, there were no health issues relevant to obesity-related diseases but over time it began to be a problem when fast food industries started growing at a rapid pace. Energy is naturally created in the body when the nutrients are absorbed from the food that is consumed. When living a healthy lifestyle, these horrible health problems don’t appear, and the chances of prolonging life and enjoying life increase.”

In her essay, author Audrey Rodriguez says that having self-control is very important to achieving a healthy lifestyle, especially now that we’re exposed to all these unhealthy yet tempting foods that all these fast-food restaurants offer. She believes that back in the early 1970s, when fast-food companies had not yet existed and home-cooked meals were the only food people had to eat every day, trying to live a healthy life was never a problem.

“A healthful diet typically includes nutrient-dense foods from all major food groups, including lean proteins, whole grains, healthful fats, and fruits and vegetables of many colors. Healthful eating also means replacing foods that contain trans fats, added salt, and sugar with more nutritious options. Following a healthful diet has many health benefits, including building strong bones, protecting the heart, preventing disease, and boosting mood.”

In her essay, Author Cathleen Crichton-Stuart explains the top 10 benefits of eating healthy foods – all of which are medically reviewed by Adrienne Seitz, a registered and licensed dietitian nutritionist. She also gives her readers some quick tips for a healthful diet.

“In today’s generation, healthy and unhealthy food plays a big role in youths and adults. Many people don’t really understand the difference between healthy and unhealthy foods, many don’t actually know what the result of eating too many unhealthy foods can do to the body. There are big differences between eating healthy food, unhealthy food and what the result of excessively eating them can do to the body. In the ongoing battle of “healthy vs. unhealthy foods”, unhealthy foods have their own advantage.”

Author Jaime Padilla compares the difference between healthy food and junk food so that the readers would understand what the result of eating a lot of unhealthy foods can do to the body. He also said that homemade meals are healthier and cheaper than the unhealthy and pricey meals that you order in your local fast food restaurant, which would probably cost you twice as much.

“The Covid-19 pandemic has sparked both an increased clinical and public interest in the role of nutrition and health, particularly in supporting immunity. During this time, when people may be highly vulnerable to misinformation, there have been a plethora of media stories against authoritative scientific opinion, suggesting that certain food components and supplements are capable of ‘boosting’ the immune system. It is important to provide evidence-based advice and to ensure that the use of non-evidence-based approaches to ‘boost’ immunity is not considered as an effective alternative to vaccination or other recognized measures.”

Authors Ayela Spiro, a nutrition science manager, and Helena Gibson-Moore, a nutrition scientist, enlighten their readers on the misinformation spreading in this pandemic about specific food components and supplements. They say that there’s no single food or supplement, or magic diet that can boost the immune system alone. However, eating healthy foods (along with the right dietary supplements), being physically active, and getting enough sleep can help boost your immunity.

This means that it provides the body with the vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients it needs to function properly. Healthy food can come in many forms, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Healthy food is important for maintaining a healthy body and mind. 200 Words Essay On Healthy Food

Healthy food is not just about what you eat – it’s also about how you eat it. For example, eating fresh, whole foods that are prepared at home with love and care is generally considered to be healthier than eating processed, pre-packaged foods that are high in salt, sugar, and unhealthy fats. Additionally, eating in moderation and avoiding excessive portion sizes is key to maintaining a healthy diet.

There are many reasons to eat healthy food, but the most obvious one is that it can help to prevent a wide range of health problems. Eating a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and other healthy foods can help to lower your risk of heart disease, stroke, obesity, and other chronic conditions. Additionally, healthy food can help to boost your immune system, giving your body the tools it needs to fight off illness and infection. But the benefits of healthy food go beyond just physical health. Eating well can also have a profound impact on your mental and emotional well-being. A healthy diet can help to reduce stress and anxiety, improve mood, and increase energy levels. It can also help to improve cognitive function and memory, making it easier to focus and concentrate.

500 Words Essay On Healthy Food

Healthy food is an essential aspect of a healthy lifestyle. It is not only crucial for maintaining physical health, but it can also have a significant impact on our mental and emotional well-being. Eating a balanced diet that includes a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins can help us feel energised, focused, and happy. But for many people, eating healthy can be a challenge. In a world where fast food and processed snacks are readily available and often more convenient than cooking a meal from scratch, it can be tempting to choose unhealthy options. And with busy schedules and hectic lives, it can be difficult to find the time and energy to plan and prepare healthy meals.

However, the benefits of eating healthy far outweigh the challenges. Not only can it help us maintain a healthy weight and reduce our risk of chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and cancer, but it can also improve our mood, energy levels, and overall quality of life.

My Experience

As I sat down at my desk with a bag of chips and a soda for lunch again, I realised that I had been making unhealthy food choices all week. I had been so busy with work and other obligations that I hadn't taken the time to plan and prepare healthy meals. I decided then and there to make a change. I started by making a grocery list of nutritious, whole foods and meal planning for the week ahead. I also made a commitment to myself to cook at home more often instead of relying on takeout or fast food. It wasn't easy at first, but over time, I started to notice a difference in my energy levels and overall mood. I felt better physically and mentally, and I was able to maintain a healthy weight. Making healthy food choices became a priority for me, and I am now reaping the numerous benefits of a nutritious diet.

One of the key components of a healthy diet is variety. Eating a diverse range of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins can provide our bodies with the nutrients, vitamins, and minerals we need to function at our best. It's important to try to incorporate a rainbow of colours into our diets, as each colour group represents different nutrients and health benefits. For example, orange and yellow fruits and vegetables are rich in vitamin C and beta-carotene, which can support healthy skin and eyesight. Green leafy vegetables like spinach and kale are packed with antioxidants and can help support a healthy immune system. And blue and purple fruits and vegetables, like blueberries and eggplants, are high in flavonoids and can help support brain health and cognitive function.

In addition to eating a variety of fruits and vegetables, it's also important to include whole grains in our diets. Whole grains, like quinoa, brown rice, and oatmeal, are a great source of fibre, which can help keep us feeling full and satisfied. They can also help regulate our blood sugar levels, which can keep our energy levels steady and prevent unhealthy cravings.

Essay on Healthy Food

Food is essential for our body for a number of reasons. It gives us the energy needed for working, playing and doing day-to-day activities. It helps us to grow, makes our bones and muscles stronger, repairs damaged body cells and boosts our immunity against external harmful elements like pathogens. Besides, food also gives us a kind of satisfaction that is integral to our mental wellbeing, but there are some foods that are not healthy. Only those food items that contain nutrients in a balanced proportion are generally considered as healthy. People of all ages must be aware of the benefits of eating healthy food because it ensures a reasonably disease-free, fit life for many years.

Switching to a healthy diet doesn't have to be a one-size-fits-all approach. You don't have to be perfect, you don't have to eliminate all of your favourite foods and you don't have to make any drastic changes all at once—doing so frequently leads to straying or abandoning your new eating plan.

Making a few tiny modifications at a time is a recommended approach. Maintaining modest goals will help you achieve more in the long run without feeling deprived or overwhelmed by a very drastic diet change. Consider a healthy diet as a series of tiny, accessible actions such as including a salad in your diet once a day. You can slowly add additional healthy options as your minor modifications become habitual.

Cultivating a positive relationship with food is also crucial. Rather than focusing on what you should avoid, consider what you may include on your plate that will benefit your health such as nuts for heart-healthy, predominant fat that reduces low-density lipoprotein levels called monounsaturated fatty acids(raspberries) for fibre and especially the substances that inhibit oxidation which we call antioxidants.

Why is Healthy Food Important?

Living a healthy lifestyle has immense payback. Over time, making smart eating choices lowers your risk of cardiovascular disease, certain malignancies, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and even anxiety and depression. Daily, you will have more energy, feel better and possibly even be in a better mood.

It all boils down to how long and how good your life is. According to several surveys, A healthy diet consists of whole grains, vegetables, fruits, nuts, and fish. A higher diet of red or processed meats on the other hand doubled the chance of dying young.

Types of Healthy Food:

Cereals, potatoes, bread and other root vegetables- These are the main sources of carbohydrates. The calories obtained from them enable us to do work.

Pulses, milk and milk products, eggs, bird meat, animal meat in limited quantities - these are great sources of protein. They build muscles and repair the damaged cells of our body, i.e., they are important for our immunity.

Ghee, butter, nuts and dry fruits, edible oil used in restrained quantities- These are rich sources of good fat. They provide more energy to our body than carbohydrates but should be consumed in a smaller amount.

Fresh fruits, vegetables and leafy vegetables, fish, egg, milk-these are good sources of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants are essential for normal functioning of the body. Though they are needed in small amounts, nowadays, nutrition experts prescribe their higher consumption as they help to fight lifestyle diseases like diabetes, obesity and even cancer.

Different types of healthy food when included in our daily diet in the right proportions along with water and roughage comprise a balanced diet. However, a balanced diet is not the same for all individuals considering many factors. Lower fat alternatives in packaged and processed foods contain other dangerous additives as fat substitutes. Manufacturers compensate for the loss of fat in packaged cookies, for example, by adding other undesirable elements like sugar.

Protein shakes: Pre-made smoothie beverages and protein powder mixes which typically claim to contain less sugar than milkshakes, slushies and diet sodas are likely to be the popular choice among customers because of the above mentioned reason. They both have the same amount of sugar and artificial sweeteners.

However, this is not true of all pre-made protein shakes and smoothies. Many of them, particularly the plant-based mixtures, are still nutritious additions to a balanced diet. Check the nutrition label to be sure there are no added sugars or artificially sweetened mixtures.

Organic food is better: Foods that are grown organically are better for you. Nutritionists labelling a product as organic doesn't mean it's superior to non-organic foods. Organic produce has the same caloric and nutritional value as non-organic produce since it is grown and prepared according to federal rules.

It’s a comprehensive approach that considers the balance of nutrients, portion sizes, and the variety of foods consumed.

Importance of Balanced Diet

A balanced diet is paramount for maintaining good health. It provides the body with essential nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that protect against chronic diseases. It’s not about eliminating certain types of food but making informed choices about what and when to eat.

Impact on Mental Health

The connection between diet and mental health is often overlooked. Consuming a diet rich in lean proteins, whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats can significantly improve mental health. Foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, for instance, are known to reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety.

The Role of Portion Control

Portion control is as important as eating the right type of food. Consuming large portions, even of healthy foods, can lead to weight gain and related health problems. Understanding portion sizes can help maintain a healthy weight and prevent lifestyle diseases.

In conclusion, healthy food is a broad concept that involves making informed and balanced dietary choices. 500 Words Essay on Healthy Food

The importance of healthy food cannot be overstated, particularly in today’s fast-paced, convenience-oriented world where processed and fast foods have become a staple in many diets. Consuming a well-balanced, nutritious diet is essential for maintaining optimal health and preventing chronic diseases.

The Definition of Healthy Food

Healthy food refers to food that contains the right amount of nutrients to keep our bodies healthy and functioning optimally. These vital nutrients include carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, and water. Whole foods, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats, are considered healthy because they are minimally processed and retain most of their natural nutrients.

The Importance of Healthy Eating

Eating a balanced diet rich in healthy foods is crucial for physical health, mental wellbeing, and longevity. It provides the necessary energy for daily activities, supports growth and repair, and helps maintain a healthy weight. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins can also reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.

Components of a Healthy Diet

A healthy diet should be balanced and varied, incorporating a range of different food types.

1. Fruits and Vegetables: These are high in vitamins, minerals, and fibers but low in calories. They contain antioxidants that protect against cell damage.

2. Whole Grains: Foods like brown rice, oatmeal, and whole wheat bread are rich in fiber, helping to regulate digestion and maintain a healthy weight.

3. Lean Proteins: Sources such as fish, poultry, and beans provide essential amino acids necessary for tissue repair and immune function.

4. Healthy Fats: Unsaturated fats, found in foods like avocados, nuts, seeds, and olive oil, are crucial for brain function and hormone production.

The Role of Moderation and Variety

While it’s important to focus on healthy food, it’s equally critical to consume these foods in moderation. Overeating, even healthy foods, can lead to weight gain and other health problems. Variety is also key. Eating a wide range of foods ensures that you get a broad spectrum of nutrients.

In conclusion, healthy eating is a fundamental aspect of maintaining good health and preventing disease. It involves consuming a variety of foods that provide a range of nutrients in moderate amounts. As college students, it’s crucial to prioritize healthy eating, despite the challenges posed by a busy schedule. Making mindful choices about what and how much to eat can significantly impact our health, wellbeing, and academic performance. Healthy food is not just about strict dietary limitations, but rather, it’s about feeling good, having more energy, improving health, and stabilizing our mood.

Essay on Eating Healthy Food (869 Words)

March 1, 2018 by Study Mentor Leave a Comment

We all have heard the common phrase which says “ Health is wealth ”. This teaches us that our health is the wealth we have.

It does not matter whether we are rich or poor, if we have a good health we have the wealth. Health is more important than wealth.

This does not mean we cannot have any wealth with us. It means that we should focus more on our health than the wealth.

We will have a lot of wealth someday but that will go the other day. If we have a good health today and we maintain our health, it will not go away from us like the wealth. It will stay with us.

If we don’t have wealth we can still survive by working. But if we lose our health, the available wealth will also be of no use to us. So, we should always remain healthy.

In order to lead a healthy life, we should eat healthy. If we eat food which is healthy for us, we will always have a good and healthy life. It is necessary to eat the right food in our diet.

It is important to eat healthy food to have a proper life free from sickness. But in today’s world, everything has advanced so much that we get food items readymade.

People these days consume more of these readymade foods which are most of the time unhealthy and junk foods.

Yes, they are delicious and tempting to eat but they are the cause of deterioration of our health. Due to busy schedule people don’t have the time to make healthy food.

This is the reason why people choose to eat the readymade food. But people should know that it is important for one to eat healthy and nutritious food. One should know which food is healthy and which is not.

Table of Contents

Why should we eat healthy?

Vegetables

But the type of food people eats these days, those type of food don’t give us the essential nutrients that is needed for the daily functioning of our body.

We should eat the right food for these essential nutrients. Eating healthy is very important for us. It will help us to be productive in our work.

We can do all our work with the energy that we get from eating healthy food.

Just like when a vehicle does not have the right amount of fuel, it does not work properly. It moves and then again stops. It seems like the driver is continuously applying the brakes.

In the similar manner, when we don’t have enough food in our body, we will not be able to function properly in our daily life.

If we don’t have the essential nutrients in our body, our condition will become like the vehicle without enough fuel.

If we eat the right food and get the essential nutrients, we will be happy because our brain gets affected by the food we consume.

When we don’t eat food properly, we tend to become stressed and be in anger. So, the right food and right nutrients will help us to be happy and not get stressed.

Eating healthy food will help in the proper development of our body. The fast foods and junk foods will be replaced if we eat healthy foods.

So, there is no chance of gaining extra weight or losing weight. This is because the healthy foods help us to control our weight. Healthy food is always good in quality.

So, we don’t have to buy them in large quantity and we can save our money. But if we consume more of fast foods we tend to spend a lot of money. Yes, even it tastes better but the quality is not better than the healthy food.

So, we tend to buy more of these food. Everyone is conscious about their body. If we eat healthy, it will have a positive impact on our body on its own.

We don’t have to waste our money for buying products to make our body better. If we don’t eat healthy food, we will be suffering from various sickness or diseases.

We will remain healthy if we eat healthy food. We will be free from diseases by eating healthy. We will be fit and fine.

As we will be free from any sort of disease, we will live longer. We will not be getting sick, so there will not be any extra expenditure for the health treatment.

What are the eating healthy habits?

Carrot, Daikon radish

People consume more of ready made food or fast foods instead of home food.

But are these really healthy habits? No, they are not. People cut short on their food thinking if they eat less, they will be fit and will not gain weight.

But that is more harmful. Eating less will not give the body the necessary nutrients it need for the daily functioning.

Instead, the person has to face other serious problems. We need to follow various eating healthy habits which will ultimately benefit us for our own betterment.

The most important is a person should drink water regularly. We should not drink water only when we are thirsty.

Water helps in proper digestion of food, eliminates waste and maintains our body temperature. We should prefer eating such food which will give us more nutrients.

Instead of eating readymade food, we should cook healthy food at home. Whatever food we cook, we must wash before we start cooking them.

And most important cleanliness should be maintained everywhere which will directly affect our way of eating healthy.

We should not be encouraged by the advertisements of food that is shown by different companies for the sale of their food items.

Most of these advertisements will only tempt us to eat them. We don’t know whether these food items are healthy for us or not.

We should know what type of food is healthy for us. Some of the healthy foods are whole grain food items, milk, fish, rice, fruits, eggs etc.

We should eat the items which give are rich in carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, fats and minerals. These will help in the overall processing of our body.

We should never skip any of the meals. We should eat all the meals on time and in the right quantity.

Like the breakfast should be eaten like king because if the breakfast is proper we will be energetic to work the entire day.

Dinner should be eaten less because after that we don’t have to any work which requires energy.

If we see delicious food at some place, we should not eat them in such a manner like we eating after a long time. This will spoil our health.

What are the consequences of not eating healthy?

We should always eat healthy. We should not be encouraged from the advertisements shown to us. We should know what we are eating.

Eating unhealthy food will directly affect our health. Eating healthy food will help us to be free from diseases.

If we consume junk foods and ignore healthy food we will be prone to many serious diseases. We will become sick physically and mentally both.

Our health will start deteriorating and body will become weak. Eating unhealthy will not cause problems only for a shorter period of time but it will last for longer.

If we change our eating habits then there is a chance that our health will improve. We will not be able to do any work if we don’t eat healthy food, our life will be totally disturbed.

We will not be happy. We will always be angry and stressed. We will not be able to concentrate anywhere.

In order to lead a long and healthy life, it is important for us to eat healthy and follow good eating habits.

Eating healthy will help not only to our body but in other areas as well. As our brain is directly affected by the food we eat, our behaviour changes if we don’t eat healthy food.

If we want to live longer, we should eat healthy. We cannot lose our life because of our decision to eat foods which are not good for us.

Essay On Importance Of Eating Healthy Food – 700 Word Long Essay

Food is a basic necessity of life as it helps us to survive. Food provides us the energy to carry out our daily tasks that include working, walking, and socializing. The food we eat represents our personality, culture, and traditions. A healthy diet leads to healthy habits and regularly eating unhealthy foods leads to many diseases that negatively impact your physical and mental wellbeing. In this essay, I will discuss the benefits of healthy food and how it impacts our daily lives.

Eating vegetables and fruits in large quantities helps to reduce the risk of developing chronic diseases such as diabetes and reduces the risk of a heart attack. Vegetables provide many healthy nutrients that are needed to maintain good health. However, eating just vegetables and no meant content is not a very good practice. Being a vegetarian is good for health but there are some nutrients that you can only get from meat and not plants. Research has shown that some essential nutrients like vitamin B12 and vitamin D13   along with many other nutrients are only present in meat and other animal-sourced foods. Therefore, everyone should look to adopt a balanced diet that contains a little bit of everything in an adequate amount.

Obesity is one of the most common health problems being faced by the modern generation. Junk food is one of the key causes of obesity because junk food contains high-calorie, high fat, high sugar, and high salt content. Health experts identify high fats, sugar, and raw salt as key contributors that cause heart diseases, kidney failure, and other health problems.

Healthy foods have many health-related benefits.  Healthy foods can improve a person’s mood and enhance their mental status. When a person’s body is under stress, protein is often broken down into amino acids which aid the body to deal with stress. Protein-rich diets such as dairy products can help to enhance the protein level in the body. Moreover, diets rich in omega-3 fats such as nuts, as well as vitamin-rich and mineral-rich diets including fruits and vegetables help maintain stable blood sugar levels. Healthy foods such as beetroot, apricots, and radishes also improve the overall body appearance. Sugary items have been linked to dry skin and early aging. These are the reasons why one should always eat healthy food.

Unhealthy foods have many disadvantages as they are the main reason for many diseases. Consuming processed food, junk food, and all types of fast foods can have very bad effects on the body. These problems lead to weight gain, excess body fat, increase the risk of heart disease, cause high blood pressure, and even early death in some cases. Artificial sweeteners

High calories have been shown to increase blood pressure and increase the chances of an early death occurring. However, vegetables, fruits, exercise, and overall calorie reduction enable the body to work efficiently. Junk food does not have vital micronutrients such as minerals and vitamins. Consequently, the consumer misses the vital nutrients needed to boost the body’s well being hence his risk of early death is enhanced.

In conclusion, everyone should make a healthier choice by eating healthy foods and developing healthy eating habits. The human body can be kept perfectly healthy by eating healthy food and maintaining a healthy diet. Always make a wiser choice because your body deserves better!

In today’s world, we mostly see only two kinds: the ones who live to eat and those who eat to live. Both of them are food extremists and people should move towards a balanced diet that comprises everything in adequate amounts.  Healthy foods lead to a healthy body and a healthy weight. On the contrary unhealthy foods destroy our digestive system and damage the whole body. In this essay on healthy food, I will discuss how and why healthy food leads to a healthy lifestyle.

Eating healthy food and pursuing a healthy diet is an essential way to add important nutrients to your food intake. Nutritionists encourage eating more vegetables to make digestion easier. They also suggest that we should avoid eating more calories than what is required by not eating meat every day. A person who only relies on junk food, fast food, and processed food becomes obese in no time. Obese people cannot live a healthy life because they are unable to do more physical activities. Lying on the bed all day and eating junk only leads to more troubles like diabetes, high blood pressure, and problems with the digestive system.

Some common healthy food easily includes whole grains, dairy products, green vegetables, eggs, and lean meat. However, always making a healthy food choice is not easy. Nowadays the world is becoming fast, busy, and demanding; there is a limited time to do everything. The same goes with food as most people don’t have enough time to prepare healthy food so they opt for fast food instead. Processed foods, energy drinks, deep-fried snacks, and sodas are also among the most unhealthy foods.

In conclusion, healthier choices enhance our health by making our lives healthy and happy. On the contrary, unhealthy food choices lead to chronic diseases, malnutrition, high cholesterol, and obesity. Given the high rate of deaths in the U.S. caused by factors related to poor diet, lack of physical exercise, and high consumption of junk foods, people need to consider consuming healthy food.

Food and health are both integral parts of our lives. To live a life without any hindrances, one must stay healthy. And if you want to stay healthy, you need to consume the right kind of food. They say “ An apple a day keeps the doctor away ”. This phrase helps us understand the importance of healthy food. Healthy food contains the right amount of nutrients that are essential for our body. We need it to keep ourselves fit.

Every parent must teach their children to differentiate between healthy and unhealthy food. A nutritious diet is important for their growth. It helps them gain focus through which they can excel in studies and extracurricular activities. Encouraging them to eat fresh fruits and vegetables is a good practice. After all, a healthy lifestyle brings joy into our lives.

Negative Impacts of Junk Food

The advertisements we see related to burgers, pizzas, fried chicken, soft drinks, and chips spoil our daily routine. They lead us to the consumption of unhealthy food choices. These foods primarily fall into the category of junk food (or fast food). Junk food contains excessive amounts of salt, sugar, and fats. This category of food must be strictly avoided as they have a lot of negative impact on our well-being.

Though junk food is harmful to our health , they seem to satisfy our taste buds. The fast-food industry is constantly growing. Now that we have food delivery apps, we have started consuming junk food all the more. People prefer it because it is readily made available to them. The satisfaction we get after eating these foods clouds our judgement. And we ignore the grave consequences.

According to survey reports, the rate of obesity in children is rapidly increasing (all over the world). In 2010, it has increased from 4 to 18 percent in children (among the age groups of six to eleven). Bad eating habit is one of the major contributors to this alarming rise. Overweight children get drawn towards eating more junk food. And they are most likely to become more obese when they grow up.

Consumption of junk food causes health troubles. Obese people have a greater chance of suffering from ailments like heart diseases, breathing problems, hypertension, stroke, cancer , etc. Junk food also causes digestive issues as it cannot provide us with fibers (they help digestion). It increases the levels of cholesterol and triglycerides present in our body. Junk food is also the prime reason for the irregularity in blood sugar levels (causes diabetes ).

Benefits of Eating Healthy Food

There are numerous benefits of healthy food. Here we have mentioned a few of them.

Healthy food promotes physical health. It keeps us active and energetic throughout the day. It also impacts our mental health. Healthy food provides us with nutrients that are crucial for the proper functioning of the brain. Healthy fruits and vegetables are rich in protein, vitamins, carbohydrates, and fibers. They boost our immune system and protect us from chronic diseases.

Green leafy vegetables are packed with minerals that build up our core strength. Healthy food controls unnecessary weight gain (it fights obesity). It shapes our body and makes our skin glow. Our mood brightens up when we have a delicious healthy meal. Moreover, healthy food saves money. Home prepared meals are cheaper than junk food options.

Components of Healthy Food

We have so many different options for healthy food. In breakfast, one can have oatmeal paired with fruits (Banana, apple, orange, and strawberries go best with it). Natural juices (made from citrus fruits) go well with your breakfast. This helps tame your sweet-tooth. Moreover, they hydrate our bodies. When our body is hydrated, our metabolism rate increases. This promotes weight loss.

Could Eating Less Help You Live Longer?

Calorie restriction and intermittent fasting both increase longevity in animals, aging experts say. Here’s what that means for you.

An illustration of a person's face, repeated to show a progression of aging. Around them clock hands reveal areas of food on circular clock shapes that double as plates.

By Dana G. Smith

If you put a lab mouse on a diet, cutting the animal’s caloric intake by 30 to 40 percent, it will live, on average, about 30 percent longer. The calorie restriction, as the intervention is technically called, can’t be so extreme that the animal is malnourished, but it should be aggressive enough to trigger some key biological changes.

Listen to this article with reporter commentary

Scientists first discovered this phenomenon in the 1930s, and over the past 90 years it has been replicated in species ranging from worms to monkeys. The subsequent studies also found that many of the calorie-restricted animals were less likely to develop cancer and other chronic diseases related to aging.

But despite all the research on animals, there remain a lot of unknowns. Experts are still debating how it works, and whether it’s the number of calories consumed or the window of time in which they are eaten (also known as intermittent fasting) that matters more.

And it’s still frustratingly uncertain whether eating less can help people live longer, as well. Aging experts are notorious for experimenting on themselves with different diet regimens, but actual longevity studies are scant and difficult to pull off because they take, well, a long time.

Here’s a look at what scientists have learned so far, mostly through seminal animal studies, and what they think it might mean for humans.

Why would cutting calories increase longevity?

Scientists don’t exactly know why eating less would cause an animal or person to live longer, but many hypotheses have an evolutionary bent. In the wild, animals experience periods of feast and famine, as did our human ancestors. Therefore, their (and conceivably our) biology evolved to survive and thrive not only during seasons of abundance, but also seasons of deprivation.

One theory is that, on a cellular level, calorie restriction makes animals more resilient to physical stressors. For example, calorie-restricted mice have greater resistance to toxins and recover faster from injury, said James Nelson, a professor of cellular and integrative physiology at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.

Another explanation involves the fact that, in both humans and animals , eating fewer calories slows down metabolism. It’s possible that “the less you have to get your body to metabolize, the longer it can live,” said Dr. Kim Huffman, an associate professor of medicine at Duke University School of Medicine who has studied calorie restriction in people. “You know, just slow the wheels down and the tires will last longer.”

Calorie restriction also forces the body to rely on fuel sources other than glucose, which aging experts think is beneficial for metabolic health and, ultimately, longevity. Several researchers pointed to a process known as autophagy , where the body eats up malfunctioning parts of cells and uses them for energy. This helps cells function better and lowers the risk of several age-related diseases.

In fact, scientists think that one of the main reasons calorie-restricted diets make mice live longer is because the animals don’t get sick as early, if at all, said Dr. Richard Miller, a professor of pathology at the University of Michigan.

There are a few notable exceptions to the findings around longevity and calorie restriction. Most striking was a study Dr. Nelson published in 2010 on mice that were genetically diverse. He found that some of the mice lived longer when they ate less, but a larger percentage actually had a shorter life span.

“That was kind of really unheard of,” Dr. Nelson said, noting that most papers on calorie restriction start out by saying: “‘Food restriction is the most robust, almost universal means of extending life span in species across the animal kingdom’ and blah, blah, blah.”

Other researchers have disputed the significance of Dr. Nelson’s findings. “People cite this study as though it were general evidence that caloric restriction only works a tiny portion, or some portion of the time,” Dr. Miller said. “But you can reach that conclusion only if you ignore 50 years of strong published evidence saying that it works almost all the time.”

Dr. Nelson’s study wasn’t the only one that didn’t find a universal longevity benefit with calorie restriction, though. For example, two studies conducted in monkeys for over 20 years, published in 2009 and 2012 , reported conflicting findings. Animals in both experiments showed some health benefits tied to caloric restriction, but only one group lived longer and had lower rates of age-related diseases, like cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

What does intermittent fasting have to do with it?

In the face of these mixed results, some researchers wonder if there may be another variable at play that is just as, or even more, important than the number of calories an animal eats: the window of time in which they eat them.

A key difference between the two monkey trials was that in the 2009 study, conducted at the University of Wisconsin, the calorie-restricted animals only received one meal a day and the researchers took away any leftover food in the late afternoon, so the animals were forced to fast for about 16 hours. In the 2012 study, run by the National Institute on Aging, the animals were fed twice a day and the food was left out overnight. The Wisconsin monkeys were the ones that lived longer.

A more recent study conducted in mice explicitly tested the effects of calorie restriction with and without intermittent fasting. Scientists gave the animals the same low-calorie diet, but some had access to the food for just two hours, others for 12 hours and another group for 24. Compared to a control group of mice that could graze on a full-calorie diet at any time, the low-calorie mice with 24-hour access lived 10 percent longer, while the low-calorie mice that ate within specific time windows had up to a 35 percent increase in life span.

Based on this collection of findings, Rafael de Cabo, a senior investigator at the N.I.A. who helped lead the monkey study there, now thinks that while calorie restriction is important for longevity, the amount of time spent eating — and not eating — every day is just as critical. And that might be the case not only for animals, but also for humans.

What does this mean for me?

It’s difficult to definitively answer whether intermittent fasting, calorie restriction or a combination of the two could cause people to live longer.

“I don’t think we have any evidence that it extends life span in humans,” Dr. Nelson said. That doesn’t mean it can’t work, he added, just that the evidence is “very hard to come by because it takes a lifetime to get that data.”

One clinical trial — named the Calerie study — attempted to answer this question by examining how cutting calories by 25 percent for two years affected a range of measurements related to aging. More than 100 healthy adults were advised on meal planning and given regular counseling sessions to help them reach their diet goals. But because it’s so difficult to reduce calories, participants were ultimately only able to reduce their intake by about 11 percent.

Compared to control participants, the dieters improved several aspects of their cardio-metabolic health, including blood pressure and insulin sensitivity, and they had lower levels of a few markers of inflammation.

The study also included three measures of “ biological age ,” comparing blood tests taken at the beginning and end of the two years. Two of the tests didn’t find an improvement in either group, but the third, which purports to measure how fast people age, did show a difference in the dieters. Calorie restriction “didn’t make people younger, but it made the rate at which they age slower,” said Dr. Huffman, who worked on the trial.

To Dr. Miller, the most significant conclusion from this study is that the 25 to 40 percent calorie restriction shown to be beneficial in animals is just not realistic in people. “Everything that could be accomplished to try to help them” cut calories was done for the participants, he said, and they still fell short of the goal of 25 percent.

Dr. de Cabo had a different take: “With only 11 percent calorie restriction that was achieved by the participants, they still show benefits,” he said.

Other research has focused on the short-term effects of intermittent fasting in people with a range of body mass indexes. Some studies , testing a variety of fasting schedules, showed improved metabolic health and reduced inflammation. But a trial of 116 people whose B.M.I. classified them as overweight or obese found no benefit among those who ate within an eight-hour window but didn’t reduce their calories, compared to a control group.

And to add a final twist, there is a notable body of evidence that appears to directly contradict the idea that calorie restriction or fasting, which typically leads to weight loss, extends human life span. Research consistently finds that people who are classified as overweight have a lower risk of death than those who are normal or underweight. One hypothesis is that people with the lowest B.M.I.s may be thin because they are older or have a chronic illness. Another is that people with higher B.M.I.s have more muscle, which weighs more than fat. But it’s also conceivable that, especially later in life, having greater body mass is actually protective, Dr. Huffman said.

Despite nearly a century of research, there’s still a ways to go before experts can say for certain whether the longevity benefits seen in animals will translate to humans. Some studies provide reason to believe that calorie restriction and intermittent fasting will help you live longer, and there are likely shorter-term benefits, particularly when it comes to heart and metabolic health. But it’s also possible that eating less might not do much more than leave you hungry.

Are Processed Foods Harmful? Debunking Myths and Misconceptions

Two little words have become a catch-all for unhealthy eating. In reality, processed food is far more nuanced.

Assorted tinned fruit & vegetables

Processed foods come in all shapes, sizes and nutritional values. We break it down so you can keep the goods and avoid the bads.

"I really try not to eat processed foods." You hear it come out of your mouth and just as it does, you realize you have only the slightest idea of what that actually   means. At least, that's how it went for me once upon a time. Even if you haven't voiced the sentiment out loud, surely you've heard the term and in an effort to get healthier , tried to cut down on those pesky, possibly life-threatening (?) processed foods. But what exactly does this loose designation mean and are processed foods really as bad as they've been billed to be? Should you avoid processed foods altogether, and if so, how? Answering the first of those questions might help to figure out the rest.

essay about eat healthy food

What are processed foods?

The term processed food really applies to any food that has been altered in any way prior to sale or consumption. The  International Food Information Council qualifies  (PDF) the processing of food as "any deliberate change in a food that occurs before it's available for us to eat -- as simple as freezing or drying food to preserve nutrients and freshness or as complex as formulating a frozen meal with the right balance of nutrients and ingredients."

There are a thousand and one ways to modify foods, from the drastic to the most basic including ancient techniques -- like drying and fermenting -- to more modern, chemical and biological modifications with new ones being developed all the time. Foods are also modified for many different reasons, from improving taste and visual appearance to extending shelf life but also some unexpected reasons you might not associate with processing -- ones which can actually be quite good for you.

Note : For the purposes of this article, we'll not discuss genetically modified foods or "GMOs," which have been altered before growth at a molecular level and pose a separate series of questions and concerns.

fruits-and-veggies

The few completely unprocessed foods -- the ones you've been telling yourself to eat as much of as humanly possible -- are a fairly small list of fruits and vegetables, meats, nuts, seeds, and a few other foods that are consumed essentially as they were when they left the earth, tree, vine, pod, shell, sea or farm. So a better question to ask yourself as you stroll the aisles of the supermarket is not "is it processed?" but rather "how processed is it?" and also "how is it processed?" Speaking very generally, the less processed the better, but there are some important caveats.

How a food is processed matters more than if it is or not

Woman takes fresh fruits and vegetables out from bag

Raw fruits and vegetables, especially organic versions, are often the least processed foods in the grocery store.

Some minimally processed foods like bagged vegetables, fresh fruits, plain rice and grains, salad greens, seeds, nuts and roasted coffee beans are technically processed, but in innocuous ways such as simply cooking, grinding or preparing them for in-store and at-home convenience. These foods are processed for your benefit: cleaned, cooked or cut for safety and ease.

Slightly more heavily processed foods, like boxed crackers or frozen fruits, vegetables and legumes, often have processing besides cooking such as an added preservative such as salt or sugar, but the effect is often minimal as most basic packaging and freezing processes are effective and relatively noninvasive.

Canned foods are not as simple to navigate, as they generally include more ingredients and more complex methods of processing or preserving. Peaches, for example, are often canned in a corn syrup-based juice, while many other canned vegetables and soups are full of nitrates and preservatives. There is also the presence of BPA, an industrial chemical found in the metal of some food cans that have been linked to serious health problems . But at the end of the day, nearly any canned, preserved and frozen food will experience some loss of nutrients, so fresh is always better if it's possible.

Medium processed foods

bead alone loaves of bread on shelf

Quality bread isn't typically processed in a way that will harm you, but watch out for bread that's been bleached to remove color or filled with sweeteners for taste.

More processed foods include those modified for taste and appearance with sweeteners, flavoring agents preservatives. These include many bottled certain shelf-stable sauces, salad dressings, soups, batters and gravy mixes. This more complex category is one that requires you to read and research specific ingredients so you know what you're putting into your body. A general rule of thumb is the fewer ingredients, the better. And remember, they're listed in descending order from the most prevalent ingredient (by sheer volume) to the least. The hard-to-pronounce ingredients are often chemical fillers, sweeteners, colorants, nitrates, antibiotics and other preservatives. Most nutritionists would urge you to avoid it where possible.

Bread and baked goods are one category of food that runs the gamut from extremely highly processed to not much at all and consumption should be carefully considered. Bleached white bread and rolls, like Wonder brand, are highly processed and preserved, obliterating most nutritional value. More natural brands, such as Arnold and Bread Alone , still may contain some preservatives, but not nearly as many as their cheaper, long-lasting friends in the bakery aisle. Again, read the ingredients; the fewer total and the more you recognize, the better.

Ultraprocessed foods: Avoid at all cost

A tv dinner

While some modern frozen food and meal delivery services are made fresh and frozen without preservatives, many are still ultraprocessed and should be axed from your diet.

The worst (and most) processed foods often come via a Trojan horse of convenience and include most ready-to-eat, frozen or prepackaged meals, mixes, soups and sweets. The more complicated the food, the more tampering likely had to be done for it to remain edible and tasty. This means most frozen pizzas and microwavable TV dinners, as well as complex packaged desserts with filling and frosting, like Twinkies and Pop-Tarts. Ultraprocessed foods contain extremely low levels of nutrition. A 2022 study on Brazilian adults showed that these foods contribute to premature death at an astounding rate.

Most store-bought bacon , hot dogs and prepackaged deli meats are also highly processed and packed with nitrates to stop the growth of bacteria, so much so that they are classified as carcinogens by some standards. This classification does not apply across the board and some newer food brands such as organic Amy's Kitchen have found ways to make and distribute prepared and frozen foods without the heavy use of chemical preservatives. The proof is often in the packaging, so read, read and then read some more.

Another thing to look out for are "low-fat" "sugar-free" and other "diet" foods which are often processed at a higher rate than others, and many times in an unhealthy way. Consider that if a food is billed as "low-fat," that means fat (taste) was removed from the original product and it has likely been either chemically altered or contains a bevy of flavor additives to make up for the loss of flavor. More often than not, this means sugar, which is arguably worse for you than the original fat that was removed. On the flip side, many low-sugar or low-carb foods are fortified with alternative chemical sweeteners, which range from the highly chemical (aspartame and saccharine) to the more naturally derived (stevia and monk fruit).

Some foods are processed for good

tropican essentials juice with calcium

Orange juice is often fortified with extra fiber, calcium and other nutrients.

While the term "processed food" certainly carries a negative connotation, many foods are processed to improve or fortify their health benefits and overall nutritional value. Certain bread products and granolas are fortified with fiber or riboflavin, for instance. Milk, juices, drinks and yogurts often get a boost of calcium or vitamins that have varying degrees of positive impact on health.

Pasteurization is another common form of processing, particularly for juice, milk and milk byproducts such as cheese and yogurt. It uses heat to eliminate potentially harmful pathogens and extend shelf life. Pasteurization does not rely on heavy additives like other preservation methods and serves as another example of food processing that shouldn't concern the average person.

In general, the term "processed foods" should not be something to scare or stop you from buying or eating something, but if you suspect or discover something has been  heavily  processed, for any reason, it would be wise to consider both the means for and the process by which it was altered before buying. When it comes to food, as with almost anything else, knowledge is power.

This Type 2 Diabetes Food List Makes Grocery Shopping So Much Easier

Here's exactly what to eat (and limit), according to dietitians.

preview for Grocery Shopping for a Healthy Lifestyle

Type 2 diabetes is a metabolic disorder related to insulin resistance which leads to elevated blood glucose (blood sugar) levels, says Kimberly Gomer, RDN, a Miami-based dietitian who specializes in weight loss, diabetes, cholesterol, and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). No one is born with type 2 diabetes, but it’s often connected to dietary choices, she says.

Luckily, type 2 diabetes can be managed (and even reversed) with a nutrient-dense diet that focuses on whole foods . Balancing your plate with lean protein, healthy fat, fiber, and complex carbs can also help stabilize blood sugar while adding variety to your diet, Gomer says. Whether you have type 2 diabetes or you simply want to regulate your blood sugar, here's what to eat (and limit), according to dietitians.

Meet the experts: Kimberly Gomer, RDN , is a Miami-based dietitian who specializes in weight loss, diabetes, cholesterol, and polycystic ovary syndrome. Erin Palinski-Wade, RD , is a registered dietitian who specializes in diabetes and the author of 2-Day Diabetes Diet .

Type 2 Diabetes-Friendly Foods

Protein is the center of a healthy diabetic diet since it’s needed for hormonal balance, muscle growth and repair, and blood sugar management, says Gomer. Plus, animal- and plant-based protein are both extremely satiating so will help keep you fuller for longer, she adds.

Non-starchy vegetables are diabetes-friendly and provide an excellent source of vitamins, minerals, and fiber , says Gomer. And yes, you can eat your veggies raw, steamed, or roasted.

  • Brussels sprouts
  • Cauliflower

Fruit gets a bad rep when it comes to type 2 diabetes, but low-sugar fruits are actually a great addition to your diet thanks to the vitamins, minerals, and low glycemic index (meaning they have little effect on blood sugar levels), says Erin Palinski-Wade, RD, a dietitian who specializes in diabetes and the author of 2-Day Diabetes Diet. The fiber content in fruit can also promote blood sugar balance and a healthy gut , she adds.

Quick note: Fresh or frozen fruit is a great choice, but if you opt for dried fruit, Palinski-Wade says to choose an option with no added sugar.

Healthy Fats

Healthy fats are anti-inflammatory and key for brain function and heart health . Just be mindful that they’re often higher in calories. So if you’re trying to lose weight, it’s important to consider portion size, Gomer says.

  • Avocado oil
  • Nuts (raw or roasted without vegetable seed oil)
  • Seeds (raw or roasted without vegetable seed oil)

Whole Grains

Whole grains are a diabetes-friendly option that are known for their low glycemic index. Many are also high in soluble fiber (looking at you, rolled oats ), which can help slow the absorption of glucose, improve insulin sensitivity, and reduce cholesterol levels, says Palinski-Wade.

  • Rolled oats

Foods To Avoid With Type 2 Diabetes

Saturated fats.

Saturated fats are a no-no when it comes to type 2 diabetes since they increase insulin resistance, says Palinski-Wade. For this reason, saturated fat should be limited to less than 10 percent of your total daily calories, she adds. Eating too many saturated fats can also raise your cholesterol which leads to an increased risk of heart disease and stroke, per the American Heart Association .

  • Processed meats

Seed oils can raise your omega-6-to-omega-3 fatty acid ratios which can harm your heart and gut, says Gomer. They also typically contain additives which may lead to bloating , gas, and inflammation, she adds. Most packaged snacks, prepared foods, and restaurants use seed oils, so they’re difficult to completely avoid, but do your best to minimize consumption if you can.

  • Soybean oil
  • Cottonseed oil
  • Grapeseed oil
  • Rice bran oil
  • Safflower oil
  • Sunflower oil

It may be tough to cut out all sugar, but those with type 2 diabetes should avoid consuming large amounts since it’s low in fiber and may worsen insulin resistance and blood sugar regulation, says Palinski-Wade. Sugar also has limited nutritional value and can spike your blood sugar, she adds.

  • Brown sugar

Processed Grains

Processed grains typically contain white flour which can raise blood sugar, says Gomer. They also lack nutritional value and are low in fiber, adds Palinski-Wade.

  • White bread
  • White-flour crackers and pretzels

Frequently Asked Questions

What causes insulin resistance.

Insulin is an essential hormone that controls your blood sugar and helps the body turn food into energy that’s either used or stored as fat, says Gomer. The hormone is secreted by the pancreas—it acts like a key to open a gate for the cells to access sugar.

If you're insulin-resistant, your cells resist that insulin, so the key gets stuck, she says. Then, the body figures the message didn’t reach the pancreas, so the message is re-sent, which creates an overproduction of insulin, she explains. As a result, insulin resistance occurs and over time, your blood sugar levels go up.

How does diet impact diabetes?

At a basic level, blood sugar is balanced by eating a whole-foods diet primarily focused on lean protein , vegetables, and complex carbs, since these foods provide the most reliable and stable energy without causing a spike in insulin, says Gomer. On the flip side, a diet high in added sugar, refined carbs, and saturated fat increases blood sugar and worsens insulin resistance, in turn, leading to type 2 diabetes, adds Palinski-Wade.

Despite the common recommendation to cut carbs if your blood sugar is high, people with diabetes do not need to avoid carbs altogether, says Palinski-Wade. This is because complex carbs balanced with lean protein, good fat, and fiber can actually provide steady blood sugar and energy throughout the day, she says. Foods with carbs like whole fruits and vegetables, whole grains, beans, legumes, nuts, and seeds have actually been shown to prevent diabetes and lower the risk of cardiovascular disease , she adds.

A 38-year-old woman who lost 140 pounds in 2 years says the game changer was eating more high-protein foods

  • Andrea Pence said eating more protein helped her lose 140 pounds.
  • She said she didn't cut out treats but found some healthier swaps and focused on high-protein meals.
  • The right balance of nutrients can make weight loss easier by helping you feel full for longer.

Insider Today

You don't necessarily have to resign yourself to cutting carbs or skipping dessert to lose weight. A 38-year-old mom of two said she lost 140 pounds in two years without restricting her favorite foods by eating more protein and tracking her meals.

In early summer 2022, Andrea Pence decided it was time to make a change. The Tennessee resident realized her routine had left her feeling constantly tired, dealing with achy joints, and struggling to stay active.

"I was tired all the time. I didn't realize just how fatigued I was, just how rundown I was. I had pain in my knees and pain in my back, I was getting out of breath just walking," she told Business Insider in an interview coordinated by the health app MyFitnessPal.

Pence said her initial goal was to lose about 90 pounds. She lost a total of 140 pounds, got rid of her sleep apnea, and boosted her energy enough to exercise daily, Pence told BI.

She said learning to be more aware of calorie counts (she uses MyFitnessPal) was a big help, but the game changer was incorporating more protein in her diet. That shift helped her to feel fuller for longer, so she could still eat her favorite foods, just in moderation.

Eating more protein can help you feel full

Pence said tracking meals helped her see that she was not getting enough protein, and she underestimated how important the nutrient is for managing appetite on a weight loss diet.

"I've given up in the past when I've tried because it's been so frustrating. You don't see results and then you're hungry all the time," she said. "Protein was absolutely, 100% one of the most important things. If you go heavy on protein, you're going to be full."

Related stories

Now, she tries to consume around 100 grams of protein daily (within the range of the amount of protein dietitians recommend , about 0.7 grams per pound of body weight daily).

Pence said she typically has a high-protein breakfast of Greek yogurt. She also substitutes higher-protein versions of convenience foods like bagels and microwave meals for lunch and dinner. But Pence said it's worth having some ice cream instead of trying to make it healthy when it comes to desserts and snacks.

"Sometimes there's not a lower-calorie swap, and that's OK, too," she said.

You don't have to cut out foods you love to lose weight

Pence said she didn't cut out any food groups.

"What's helped me do this for the long haul is I've not cut anything out that I've wanted," she said.

It's true: Dietitians have previously told BI that following a specific weight-loss regime, such as a low-carb diet or intermittent fasting, is not necessary.

"Diet culture has people out here thinking you have to eat this bland salad with grilled chicken every day, and that is all you can eat," she said.

Pence said she had tried losing weight in the past by eating "healthy" foods, like fruit-and-granola parfaits, but she later realized they had more calories than she expected.

Being mindful of total calories and finding ways to fit in more protein helped Pence enjoy her food while still meeting her goals.

"If I want a cheeseburger, I'm going to have a cheeseburger," she said.
