THE ASSIGNED NUMBERS

Unlike the MPAA we do not assign one inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY , VIOLENCE/GORE and LANGUAGE on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest, depending on quantity and context.

FILTER by RATINGS Did you know you can now filter searches by any combination of ratings? Just go to our search page or use the search bar, with or without a keyword, from the top navigation menu. Move sliders from 0-10 in any combination, check and uncheck MPAA ratings and use keywords to further filter results — please let us know what you think.

HUH? WHAT IS THIS?

This is what we do: We enable adults to determine whether a movie is appropriate for them or their children, according to their own criteria. Unlike the MPAA we do not assign an inscrutable rating based on age but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY , VIOLENCE/GORE & LANGUAGE, on a scale of 0 to 10, and we explain in detail why a film rates high or low in a specific category; we also include instances of SUBSTANCE USE, a thorough list of DISCUSSION TOPICS that may elicit questions from children, and the MESSAGE the film conveys. Since our system is based on objective standards, not the viewer’s age or the artistic merits of a film, we enable adults to determine whether a movie is appropriate for their own children… | more |

3 Trustworthy Websites For Age-Based TV and Movie Ratings

Many families are finding it increasingly difficult to find appropriate TV shows for their children’s age group.

More often than not, you come across media that is deemed “age-appropriate,” but it ends up containing content you’re not comfortable with.

I’ve rounded up the best three websites that are designed to “shine a light on the world of popular entertainment, while giving families the essential tools they need to understand, navigate, and impact the culture in which they live.” (Pluggedin.com)

best age rating websites

Why are age-appropriate media reviews important?

People, families specfically, are wanting more detailed information about the content that’s really in mainstream movies, videos, television episodes and games. The entertainment industry ratings will only tell you so much, oftentimes glazing over some pretty important details.

The 3 websites listed below go much deeper, diving headfirst into content and the meaning behind it, so you can feel rest-assured as a parent trying to navigate this media-crazed world!

Family-friendly TV and movie ratings

The 3 websites below are very popular for finding honest ratings and reviews. They’re not Catholic-specific, but used among many Catholic and faith-based families.

1.) CommonSenseMedia.org

best age rating websites

This is by far one of the most popular websites for TV show and movie reviews for children. Common Sense Media has been in the business since 2003, and is highly-trusted for their honest reviews of age-appropriate media.

“Our kids are on the front lines of a digital revolution. Devices, social networks, and media are changing childhood in radical ways. We all want kids to grow up healthy and happy as the world accelerates around them. Common Sense has helped hundreds of millions of parents, teachers, and policymakers navigate this accelerating landscape. Today, our mission to ensure kids’ digital well-being is more relevant and vital than ever.” CommonSenseMedia.org

2.) Kids-In-Mind.com

best age rating websites

According to Kids In Mind,

“The purpose of kids-in-mind.com is to provide parents and other adults with objective and complete information about a film’s content so that they can decide, based on their own value system, whether they should watch a movie with or without their kids, or at all. It’s like a food labeling system which tells you what a food item contains. That’s it. We make no judgments about what is good or bad — or anything else. Indeed, we do not “condemn,” “critique” or “criticize” movies. And we don’t “praise” or “recommend” movies either. We advance no “beliefs” and we do not “preach” anything. We are not affiliated with any political party, any cultural or religious group, or any ideology. The only thing we advocate is responsible, engaged parenting.”

Sounds good to me!

3.) PluggedIn.com

best age rating websites

Plugged In is actually a branch off of Focus on the Family, which is a Christian-based family website.

“Plugged In looks at films through a biblical worldview filter, keeping families—especially those with children in the home—ultimately in mind. Realizing the MPAA’s ratings system is greatly lacking (and often untrustworthy), we strive to be reliable “information providers,” highlighting both the positive and negative content elements, a requisite for discerning individuals regarding the making of wise entertainment choices. While providing a numerical rating for each movie and varying colors of caution for broad age ranges in an effort to help categorize where a film generally stands within the cultural context, we refrain from telling people to view or not view a specific film. Instead we outline content in categories such as “sexual,” “drug and alcohol,” “violence,” “crude or profane language,” “spiritual,” etc., then provide summation and perspective for that content, equipping families (and individuals) with information they can draw upon to assist in making media decisions.”

Websites That Give Honest TV Reviews for Kids

So there you have it! 3 trustworthy websites to help you make informed decisions on the television shows and movies your children are watching. What do you think? Are these websites helpful for you? My children are still a little young to get into big-name movies and TV shows, but I’ll definitely keep these websites in my back pocket for when they’re a little older.

If you found this post helpful, please pin it and pass it along to a parent who could use it!

5 Helpful Websites for Parents Who Want to Know More

best age rating websites

  • Mixed Media,
  • Kristy Quist, Tuned In Editor

It’s no simple thing to figure out if the game your son wants to buy is appropriate, or if the movie your daughter’s friends are going to watch is right for her. Of course you turn straight here to thebanner.org for your reviews, but you can’t find everything here. So here are some other sites you might find helpful. As always, these are tools for discernment, not substitutes for good judgment on the part of the one who knows your child best—you!

1. kids-in-mind.com This website will answer any and all questions you may have about a movie’s content. At a glance you can read a description of the movie and an assigned rating for three categories: Sex & Nudity, Violence & Gore, and Profanity. Need more information? Click on “Complete Content Analysis” under the title of your choice to find out pretty much everything that is in the film. It’s the same content listing, by the way, that you will get if you click on “Parents Guide” on the Internet Movie Database imdb.com . Don’t look here for an evaluation of how worthwhile the movie is—this site will just tell you what your child might see.

2. parentpreviews.com Parent Previews also reviews movie content. The site lists a report card on each movie, giving grades in the categories Violence, Sexual Content, Language, and Drugs/Alcohol. There is also an overall grade based on the combination of those grades. You can also read a full review or the details of the content. The “Talk It Over” section suggests questions for discussion. You can also check alternate titles and readers’ comments.

3. pluggedin.com This arm of Focus on the Family reviews movies, videos, music, TV, and games. While movies get a content caution rating for each of three categories—kids, teens, and adults—the other categories leave it to the reader to decide based on content descriptions. Focus on the Family also offers book reviews at a separate site, thrivingfamily.com . They explicitly state that their reviews are for content, not for literary merit.

4. dove.org The Dove Foundation evaluates movies, music, and books, each of which have either received or not received the Dove designation “Family Approved.” Their focus seems to be on movies, as the book and music sections have a much more limited selection. Movies have a bar graph rating content in the categories Sex, Language, Violence, Drugs, Nudity, and Other. Once you get beyond the first couple of screens, the site is not as streamlined and easy to use as others.

5. commonsensemedia.org This website offers reviews of a broad spectrum of movies, games, apps, websites, TV, books, and music. Like kids-in-mind.com , these reviews are based on content, not worldview. They promote what they call “media sanity,” offering tools to parents and children to be savvy users. Common Sense Media allows parents and kids to share their ratings as well.

Parenting is one of if not the single largest responsibility you can take on in life. It takes time, energy, and dedication. In this world there are many influences you don’t want your kids to have. With entertainers constantly pushing boundaries it would be difficult to go through a day as an adult without coming across at least one thing you wouldn’t want your children exposed to. But how do you keep these influences away from your children? You cannot be there every second of every day; and even if you could, that would hardly be beneficial for your child.

There are many areas of modern technology with snares for the unwary. TV, Movies and video games are clearly something that you as a parent should be involved with your child on. You should know what they are watching and playing; you should know what the ratings for those things are; and you should have a clearly defined boundary between what is acceptable and what is not. For TV, a V chip can help. For movies and video games, there are organizations whose sole purpose is educating parents on the contents of new releases. They have a comprehensive set of ratings for both movies and video games that will let you know whether a given game or movie is suitable for your children.

In addition, we strive to help you sort through the latest family entertainment and  social media . We are your online family resource for  parents movie reviews ,  movie ratings for families ,  video game ratings and parental advisory information.

But in the 21st century, there are many more avenues for malignant influences to reach your children. While both cell phones and the internet are invaluable tools for staying connected; they both have pitfalls for a child. Thankfully, there are internet filters that you can set up on your computer to limit the sites your children can access. That means your fourteen year old son can catch up on the latest sports headlines, but he won’t be looking up centerfolds. The options on these filters include the ability to set up reports on your children’s browsing habits, or send you an email when they try to access a site they aren’t allowed on. They can even be set to shut down internet access after a certain time of night.

Major cell phone companies have robust parental controls on phones as well. You can block numbers from your children’s phones, set them to shut off at a certain time of night, and even activate emergency tracking on the phone to help find a lost child. And that brings us to another great new parenting invention: GPS. You can get a GPS device that your child carries around with them so that you know where they are. This can provide great peace of mind for any parent who takes their children to busy public places. It only takes a moment turned the wrong way for a child to get lost, but with GPS they can be easily found again.

Parenting responsibilities begin long before TV, movies, cell phones, video games, or even the internet are of any interest to your child however. From birth, your child needs to be fed, nurtured, supported, cared for, oh and fed… From the moment they are born, we try to protect our children from harm, and baby safety is at the forefront of any good parent’s mind.

Why do we spend so much time thinking about baby safety? Babies are fragile, that’s why! When they are born, babies can’t even hold their own head up. They weigh a meager handful of pounds, can’t see past 18 inches, and are utterly defenseless. As our children grow, it always seems that their ability to get into trouble constantly outpaces their ability to judge what constitutes a bad idea. Our job as parents is to help steer them away from the worst ideas, the ones that could seriously injure them.

As parents, we want to provide our babies with the best things possible, whether it is food, baby toys, education, or baby bedding. It’s a competitive world, and any edge you can give your children, you want for them. In many cases it goes beyond a simple edge though. High quality baby bedding has been shown to reduce incidence of sleeping problems in infants, including SIDS.

Other pieces of baby gear can be equally important to keeping a young child safe. Humidifiers are invaluable aids if your baby catches a cough (and at some point, they will). Organic toys ensure that your baby isn’t coming into contact with lead based paints or other toxic chemicals. Safety latches and gates keep your baby out of areas of the home that could harm them. We have them all here, at prices that can’t be beat.

IMDb vs. Rotten Tomatoes vs. Metacritic: Which Movie Ratings Site Is Best?

IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes, and Metacritic are the three most popular ratings sites for movies, but they aren't all equal.

Thanks to online ratings, it's easier than ever to know whether or not a movie is worth watching. A quick Google search brings up plenty of websites offering their opinions on the latest films.

The three most popular are IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes, and Metacritic. But how do these sites differ, and which should you trust for information on movies? Here's everything you need to know.

The Internet Movie Database (IMDb) is a gigantic compendium of movies, TV shows, and video games. Its primary use is to find detailed information about any actor, producer, or piece of media content.

When you pull up a movie, you'll see a synopsis, trailers, photos, a cast list, trivia, and much more. What makes IMDb so useful is its cross-referencing. Upon opening the page for an actor, you'll see their best-known roles. Thus, IMDb is great for those "what else have I seen her in?" moments.

The IMDb mobile app takes this a step further. If you create an account and give ratings to movies and other media, you'll see a You may know them from field on an actor's page if you've rated something they appeared in.

With a free IMDb account, you can also create a Watchlist of movies you want to see. Along with contributing to the 10-point rating scale with other users, IMDb has many other useful features to offer if you're interested.

Pros of IMDb

Unlike the other two sites, IMDb's reviews come solely from users. It only takes a minute to sign up for IMDb and leave a review, so there's little barrier to entry.

Thus, IMDb's biggest strength is that its scores gives you a good idea of what normal consumers think of it. Professional critics have no influence on IMDb scores.

IMDb has a weighted average system to prevent users from rigging the score, but the service doesn't make it clear exactly how this works. Click the review count next to the star icon on any movie's page to see a breakdown of how people rated it.

Below the overall star average, you can see how the ratings break down by a few demographics, including age and gender.

Cons of IMDb

IMDb's biggest problem is that like other platforms, most people only leave reviews if they love or hate a film. Thus, this skews the scores in favor of either fanboys or haters.

People who want to boost a movie's perception will likely rate the movie a 10, while those who didn't like it will give a rating of one. This means you should read a handful of reviews to get a full picture of the movie's quality.

Rotten Tomatoes

Rotten Tomatoes is a trusted source for movie reviews sourced from critics. Every movie uses the "Tomatometer" to score the quality of a film. If the critic liked the movie, a red tomato appears by their review. When they don't like it, you'll see a green splat instead.

As long as 60 percent or more of critics like the movie, it earns an overall Fresh score with a red tomato. If under 60 percent of critics rate the movie favorably, it earns a Rotten score with a green splat.

Meanwhile, a Certified Fresh badge appears next to titles that are of particularly high quality. They must hold at least a 75 percent favorable score after 80 reviews, including at least five from top critics.

Open any movie's page, and you'll see the overall score plus its number of reviews at the top. Click See Score Details for a deeper breakdown. The Critics Consensus , present for most movies, is a great summary of why the movie received its score.

Rotten Tomatoes also providers a user score, shown by the popcorn bucket. When at least 60 percent of users rated it 3.5 stars (out of 5) or higher, it shows a full bucket. A tipped-over bucket represents that under 60 percent of users gave it under 3.5 stars. Since you can use half-star ratings, this is close to the IMDb score.

In 2019, Rotten Tomatoes made some changes to reduce "review bombing" of movies. There's no longer a Want to See percentage, and you'll also see a check next to user reviews where the site has confirmed that the person actually bought a ticket to the movie.

At the bottom of a movie's page, you can read excerpts from the critic reviews, filter by fresh or rotten, or only show top critics. Search for your favorite actors, and you can check the scores of films they appeared in.

Related: Sites Like Rotten Tomatoes to Find Average Ratings and Reviews for Anything

Pros of Rotten Tomatoes

Rotten Tomatoes has the advantage of sourcing its reviews from trusted critics. The Rotten Tomatoes criteria page explains that the site only takes reviews from trusted newspapers, podcasts, and websites. In theory, this means that only the opinions of the most-trusted movie critics influence the Rotten Tomatoes review.

The Top Critic designation lets you filter by the absolute best critics if you prefer. You can't get a more professional opinion than from these folks.

Overall, Rotten Tomatoes does a good job of letting you know at a glance whether or not a movie is worth your time. The easily identifiable icons, overall score, and consensus summary only take a moment to scan.

Cons of Rotten Tomatoes

The biggest issue with Rotten Tomatoes is that it breaks down complex opinions into a Yes or No score. It scores a critic who thought the movie was decent but had some flaws (say, a 59 percent rating) the same as one who thought the movie was absolute garbage (a zero percent score).

You'll notice this with the Average Rating under the score. Take Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle as an example. Of the 232 critic reviews, 177 of them are positive. This gives the movie a score of 76 percent. However, the critics rated the movie an average of 6.2/10---quite a bit under the 76 percent displayed on the page.

This doesn't mean the scores on Rotten Tomatoes are useless, of course. But it's important to remember that there's nuance in individual reviews, and the Fresh/Rotten system effectively turns every rating into a 100 or 0 score.

Metacritic aggregates reviews of movies and TV shows, plus video games and music albums. It's one of the best sites for gamers , but it can give you a good idea on the quality of movies too.

The site collects reviews from many sources and aggregates them into one "metascore" from 0 to 100. It displays a color and one-line indication of quality based on the overall score, with the following used for movies, TV, and albums:

  • 81-100: Universal Acclaim (Green)
  • 61-80: Generally Favorable Reviews (Green)
  • 40-60: Mixed or Average Reviews (Yellow)
  • 20-39: Generally Unfavorable Reviews (Red)
  • 0-19: Overwhelming Dislike (Red)

Unlike Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic uses a weighted average system. Nobody knows the exact details, but the service assigns more importance to some sources than others. Like the other two sites, Metacritic also includes a separate user score, which does not influence the critic score.

The Pros of Metacritic

Metacritic avoids the Rotten Tomatoes problem of scoring every review as simply "good" or "bad." A review of 50 percent gets mixed in with the rest to create the metascore. Thus, the score you see on Metacritic is closer to the average review, as opposed to the percentage of critics who simply liked the movie on Rotten Tomatoes.

Additionally, among these three sites, Metacritic is the only one to feature full user reviews right next to critic reviews. This makes it easy to compare what the general public thinks compared to the professionals.

The Cons of Metacritic

While it's easy to translate a score from a five-star or 10-point scale, Metacritic's way of translating letter grade is questionable. We can see how this works on the About Metascores page :

While scoring an A as 100 percent makes sense, note the scores for B- and F , for instance. A 67 percent score for a B- seems a bit harsh. In most schools, a score of 67 percent is closer to an F than it is a B- .

And scoring an F as 0 percent seems unfair. Something like 20 percent for an F might be more appropriate. Because every site has different scales for scoring (some might not even use pluses and minuses), this could skew a reviewer's original meaning.

Also, unlike Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic seems to have few public standards. There's no detailed information on where it sources it critics from. Thus, the score potentially doesn't have as much weight behind it as Rotten Tomatoes does.

What Is the Best Movie Rating Website?

So we've now taken a look at IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes, and Metacritic, and listed their major pros and cons. As you might have guessed, there's no one website that's best for everything.

However, we can recommend each of these sites for different reasons:

  • IMDb is great for seeing what general audiences think of a movie. If you don't care what the critics say and want to see what people like yourself thought of a film, then you should use IMDb. Just be aware that fans often skew the vote with 10-star ratings, which may inflate scores somewhat.
  • Rotten Tomatoes offers the best overall picture of whether a movie is worth seeing at a glance. If you only trust the opinions of top critics and just want to know if a movie is at least decent, you should use Rotten Tomatoes. While the Fresh/Rotten binary can oversimplify the often complex opinions of critics, it should still help you weed out lousy films.
  • Metacritic offers the most balanced aggregate score. If you don't mind which critics' opinions go into the final score and prefer seeing a general average, then you should use Metacritic. Its standards are mostly unknown, but Metacritic makes it easy to compare professional and user reviews side-by-side.

Of course, there's nothing wrong with checking all three of these sites every time you're thinking of seeing a movie. Over time, you should figure out which site's tastes most match yours; then you'll know which is best for you personally.

Personal Taste Still Matters Most

Remember that movie scores aren't everything. All three of these sites don't, for instance, paint an accurate picture of movies that are so bad they're good. Because those movies are objectively terrible, they carry low scores even though they have ironic value.

Plus, it's impossible to sum up complex opinions from dozens of people into a single number. And no matter what the critics or general public think, your preferences might be totally different anyway. There's nothing wrong with enjoying a movie that most people find stupid. So while these sites are helpful, don't take them too seriously.

Book Review Sites for ALL Kids

How do i know if a book is right for my kids.

It’s a little overwhelming to stay on top of all of the books my kids want to read.  I want to encourage them to read; however, I do not want to expose them to a story-line that is violent, disturbing, filled with inappropriate relationships, and bad language.

This post is really meant for a reader who is self selecting books themselves.  If you’re looking for books on how to choose a book at an appropriate level,  click here .  What do you do when your child asks you to request a new book from the library or purchase one from the new school book order?

You look at the titles and find yourself asking, is this book “safe” for my child to read?

I’d love a system that rates books similar to the movies: G, PG, PG-13, R, and even NC-17.   While I haven’t found those types of ratings, plenty of sites have their own system.

I would like to stress that it is still important to screen reading material as much as possible.  Friends and knowledgeable librarians may have different standards.  Since it is nearly impossible to pre-read every single title for your voracious reader, try out the sites below and bookmark your favorite one!

Books listed below contain affiliate links.

1.  Common Sense Media

My personal favorite book review site is Common Sense Media .  It is known for it’s movie, video games, and app reviews; however, it also includes books.  You can search by book title, age, topic, parent recommended, and award winners.  This is my go-to book review site!

Age Appropriate Rating System :  Green, Yellow, and Red circles (like a stoplight) to let you see if this content is appropriate for your child’s age .

GREEN:  Content is age appropriate for kids this age.

YELLOW : Know your child; some content may not be right for some kids.

Background:  Tasha is a librarian in Wisconsin.  She reviews everything from picture books to teen novels.  She only reviews books that she really enjoys.  Tasha also has a great Pinterest board with boards for all of the best early, middle, and teen books of the year.

Love your list! I have checked Common Sense Media and Thriving Family many times. I like to read several reviews because every one has a slightly different take on what is appropriate at the different ages. A few other sites I would add are Story Snoops (www.storysnoops.com), The Literate Mother ( http://www.theliteratemother.org ), and Sweet on Books ( http://sweetonbooks.com/ ). Also (shameless plug!), I do thorough reviews of books on my blog. 🙂 I’m looking forward to checking out the rest of the websites on your list – thanks!

Understanding Age Ratings

Age ratings

In the ever-evolving landscape of entertainment and digital content, the importance of age ratings can not be overstated. As our screens offer a diverse array of TV shows, movies, apps, online games and videos, video games, and more, understanding age ratings and how they help protect our children online is vital. Navigating the overwhelming amount of content available to our children can seem daunting for parents as we aim to ensure our children consume age-appropriate and safe content online.

This post will break down the ratings from various platforms and share additional ways to determine appropriate content for your children.

Age ratings are available for movies, apps on Apple and Android devices, and video games. It’s important to note that streaming services, like Netflix, do not require age ratings. Later in this article, we will cover ways to supplement the lack of age ratings and additional steps to ensure your children consume content responsibly and safely.

The most familiar ratings for most parents are those for movies. Since childhood, in the US we’ve seen the G, PG, PG-13, R, and NC-17 ratings (other countries have other, comparable systems).

As a reminder, G ratings are for all ages. PG stands for parental guidance suggested and notes that some content may not be suitable for children. PG-13 ratings remind parents to be strongly cautioned and that some material may be inappropriate for children under 13. The R rating is for restricted movies. Anyone under 17 is required to have a parent or adult guardian accompany them to watch in a theater. NC-17 movies are restricted to anyone under 17, regardless of a parent or guardian being present.

The goal of these ratings is to inform parents of the level of specific content in movies that parents may consider inappropriate. That content may include violence, sex, drugs, language, thematic material, adult activities, etc.

Video Games

The Entertainment Software Rating Board, or ESRB, is responsible for ratings for boxed video games. The ratings are based on the consensus of at least three specially trained raters. The raters collaboratively assess a game’s content and decide what rating should be applied. Ratings can be adjusted after release as ESRB raters play-test the game post-release to ensure accurate ratings. ESRB rater’s identities are secret to reduce influence from outside sources or major companies. Raters are also not allowed to have connections to the video game industry.

The ESRB ratings are:

  • E- suitable for everyone
  • E 10+- suitable for everyone ten and older
  • T-suitable for teens
  • M-mature 17+

Apple and Android Apps

Android apps use the ESRB rating system.

Apple age ratings are determined based on a questionnaire given to app creators. There are penalties in place if the questionnaire is not answered accurately.

The Apple age ratings are:

4+: Apps with this rating contain no objectionable content.

9+: Apps with this rating may contain instances of the following content that may not be suitable for children under the age of 9, including infrequent or mild cartoon or fantasy violence, infrequent or mild profanity or crude humor, and infrequent or mild mature, suggestive, horror or fear themed content.

12+: Apps with this rating may contain instances of content that may not be suitable for children under the age of 12 including infrequent or mild medical or treatment-focused content, infrequent or mild references to alcohol, tobacco, or drug use, infrequent or mild sexual content or nudity, frequent or intense contests, frequent or intense profanity or crude humor, frequent or intense horror or fear themed content, frequent or intense cartoon or fantasy violence, infrequent or mild occurrences of realistic violence, and infrequent or mild simulated gambling.

17+: Apps with this rating could contain instances of the following content that may not be suitable for children under the age of 17, including unrestricted web access, such as with an embedded browser, gambling, frequent or intense simulated gambling, frequent or intense mature or suggestive content, frequent or intense mature or suggestive content, frequent or intense medical or treatment-focused content, frequent or intense references to alcohol, tobacco, or drug use, frequent or intense sexual content or nudity, and frequent or intense realistic violence.

Streaming Services

As stated previously, streaming services currently do not require age ratings. However, in addition to understanding age ratings, parents have other options for ensuring all content consumed by their children is appropriate.

Start by establishing rules and expectations for your child to follow and have them understand and agree to those rules before allowing media consumption or time online. If your child sees inappropriate content on a game, app, movie, video, or TV show, they are more likely to come to you if they understand the expectations you have set for them. Keep communication open and honest.

We recommend co-watching as much media as possible. Play their games together. Watch movies and TV together. Know what your children are watching, playing, and doing online. If you are unable to co-watch, set up media zones in your home so that your child is not out of sight or earshot while viewing online content.

Using the standard parental controls on all devices and installing parental control apps like Kidslox sets another level of protection for your children. Parental control apps do so much of the work for you by automatically blocking content and notifying you if your child has viewed or has tried to view inappropriate content.

Utilize outside resources as much as possible. Don’t just rely on the age rating. Read parent reviews of apps, TV shows, movies, and other media. Use websites like Common Sense Media (CSM). CSM rates movies, TV, video games, music, apps, websites, and books. The CSM website gives in-depth reviews and their own independent ratings. There are even suggestions for discussions parents may want to have with their children regarding the reviewed media. CSM provides a detailed summary of what parents should know in categories like sex, language, consumerism, drinking, drugs, smoking, violence, positive role models, diverse representations, and positive messages. CSM has partnered with DISH Network and DIRECTV to include their age recommendations on their guide listings, too!

Join parenting communities that share your common goals. Talk to other parents and continue to stay informed. Join groups like The Net Safe Mom , which hosts monthly workshops and posts resources daily to keep parents informed.

Though the amount of media and content available to our children daily can seem overwhelming, multiple tools are at your disposal, ready to be used to keep your kids safe Online.

Regardless of where you live, you can connect online to find relationships with other seniors.

Regardless of where you live, you can connect online to find relationships with other seniors . “The most important thing for any potential online dater is to know what your goals are before choosing an online dating website,” says Kevin Darné, author of “Online Dating: Avoid the Catfish!: How to Date Online Successfully.” You’ll also want to consider which senior dating websites to join. “These days there are plenty of niche dating sites,” Darné says.

The best dating websites and apps for seniors are:

  • Senior Friends Date.
  • Silver Singles.
  • EliteSingles.
  • Christian Mingle.
  • MatureDating.
  • SeniorMatch.

Here is a breakdown of what to expect from each dating site for older people in terms of cost, features for seniors and other perks.

This site first launched in 1995 as a pioneer in the online dating industry. Today it has a presence in 24 countries and hosts sites in 15 different languages. The sheer number of Match memberships may help create more opportunities for dating . While Match is available for all adults, you can enter your age preference, along with other details, to get a list of people with whom you might want to start a relationship. You’ll also receive notifications about events in your region where you might be able to meet other people. The site is free, but to access additional features you need to subscribe, which starts at $15.99 a month. Match is available on Google Play and the App Store.

Launched in 2000, this site has options specifically for those over age 50 who are looking to date. You can register for free by entering some personal data and uploading a picture. A compatibility matching system helps narrow the field to match you with a select group who might be right for you. If you would like additional features, such as direct messages, you can take out a subscription, which ranges from $35.90 to $65.90 a month. You can find eHarmony on Google Play and the App Store.

Senior Friends Date

Designed for seniors, this site asks you to register, complete a profile and then add several pictures. It works to match you with others who live near your location, so it’s easier to meet in person. There is also a free messaging service. There isn’t an app available for Senior Friends Date.

While the app is available for all adults, the system may appeal to seniors because it has a unique approach. All members take a Myers-Briggs personality test and are then matched with other compatible Myers-Briggs personality types. The basic features are free, but you’ll have to pay more for additional access. There is an app on both Google Play and the App Store.

Silver Singles

Since 2002, this site has been aimed at users who are over age 50 . When you start, you’ll take a personality test that has a comprehensive list of questions that cover your interests, beliefs and preferences. The site has an automatic matchmaking process to connect you with others based on your answers. You can also include additional information like a bio and picture. A basic membership is free, but if you want a premium membership the cost starts at $24.95 a month. You can find Silver Singles on Google Play and the App Store.

Catering to the senior audience, this site offers a scientific personality test to help you find a suitable match. You can register for free, but to access additional features will cost more, starting at $19.99 a month. Singles50 is available on both Google Play and the App Store.

EliteSingles

This international dating site has a U.S. presence, along with partners in more than 25 countries. It has an over-50 dating platform. The site includes a personality test that covers five dimensions: openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness and neuroticism. After filling in personal information, you can specify the type of individuals with whom you would like to connect, including preferences about age, religion and education. The algorithm will work to align your tastes with others who have the same expectations. It sends you three to seven potential matches a day. Subscription costs start at $31.95 a month. It is available on Google Play and the App Store.

This site may appeal to single seniors who want to reach out directly to others using the swipe function or connect through livestream video features. Once you sign up, you will see screen shots of other Zoosk members. You can send winks, hearts and gifts. For a subscription, the cost starts at $8.33 a month. Zoosk is available on Google Play and the App Store.

Christian Mingle

This site focuses on helping members to meet potential partners who share the same religious faith. After registering, you will be able to connect with over 15 million Christian singles. You can create a free profile. Premium plans start at $19.99 a month. An app is available at Google Play and the App Store. Parent company Spark Networks also has dating websites for other religious groups including Jdate, JSwipe, LDSSingles and Adventist Singles.

MatureDating

Designed for seniors, this site allows you to sign up and create a profile. After you’ve added several recent pictures, you can use the site’s features to find other singles. You can view pictures, participate in chat rooms and also arrange private chats. While the application is free, a full membership plan starts at $11.99 a month. MatureDating is available in the App Store.

This site caters to those who are over 50 years old. After creating an account, you fill out a form with personal information including your life experiences. You can then look for someone who shares your interests. You’ll have the option of sending private messages to other users and meeting people in your area. It’s free to join, and a monthly subscription for additional features starts at $29.99. An app is available in Google Play or the App Store.

SeniorMatch

This site has been in the online dating space for more than 20 years and is designed for those who are over age 50. Members highlight interests such as traveling and adventure to find a connection with someone else. You can communicate in several ways, including sending a wink or commenting on someone’s picture. You may add ideas for first dates which others can see. The site is free, but to have premium access you need to become a premium member, which starts at $15.95 a month. The app is available in Google Play and the App Store.

Looking for an apartment? Here are your go-to sites for finding the right space

  • Emerson College
  • Brandeis University
  • Cloud Services
  • Error Messages
  • Family Tech
  • Home Networking
  • Around the Web

Finding an apartment used to mean reading newspaper ads and driving around town to check out potential places to live. These days, apartment-finding websites make the search easy and convenient. Here are the top 10 apartment-finding sites to help you select the perfect new dwelling at the right price.

Rent.com: Best Website to Find Apartments Using Filters

Built-in Moving Center supplies free moving quotes based on the size and location of your current apartment, when you’re moving, and your destination.

The selection of apartments is smaller than some sites.

Many listings are for apartment complexes with multiple units available.

Rent.com offers a wide variety of search filters. For example, search for pet-friendly apartments or properties with utilities included in the rent and apartments with features such as air conditioning, washer/dryer, walk-in closets, or disability access.

Many apartment complexes on the site offer virtual tours.

ForRent.com: Best Apartment Finder App/Website for Those Who Crave Details

Offers helpful resources such as an apartment rental checklist.

Most of the listings are for properties owned by large management companies.

This apartment finder provides precise information about apartment complexes. Beyond a detailed overview of property features such as pet policies and proximity to shopping, you get a photo gallery, videos, and floorplans with many listings.

A built-in calculator also helps determine how much rent you can afford to pay.

Zumper: Most Price-Sensitive Apartment Hunting Site

Has unique search filters, such as the ability to search for Section 8 apartments and short-term rentals, as well as searching by neighborhood within a city.

You can get details about a rental from your search results, but   the amount of information varies considerably from one apartment or property to the next.

Zumper is especially sensitive to pricing considerations. For instance, the site presents median rental prices for specific cities, and the map view shows sample prices for rentals throughout a selected area.

Hotpads: Most Feature-Packed Apartment Finder

Shows you how long the apartment has been listed on the site.

Lots of features on the site.

Filters are more plentiful on some other sites.

During your search, this feature-rich site shows you a map of the area alongside a list view. In the map view, select building icons to see details and photos of specific apartment listings. Photos also include Google Street View .

Built-in search filters include the type of dwelling, price range, number of baths and bedrooms, rental types, and property types. Select rental types such as regular, sublet, corporate, and room for rent, as well as from property types such as apartment, condo, duplex, house, and townhouse.

If you register with the site, save listings as favorites.

Apartments.com: Best Apartment Website If You're Bilingual

Using a "Plan Your Commute" search filter, specify the commute time you want from your apartment to your job, be it by driving, walking, bicycling, or public transportation.

Though the site offers neighborhood guides for some cities, these guides aren’t necessarily available for all neighborhoods within those cities, including some with highly desirable rentals.

Available in both English and Spanish, Apartments.com provides extensive apartment listings, allowing you to be highly specific in your searches. For example, search for cheap apartment rentals, luxury properties, or elevator buildings.

By default, you receive a map view. Use a built-in drawing tool to specify the borders for your geographic search, then turn to a polygon tool to drill down into listings in smaller geographic parts of the overall search area.

Craiglist: One of the Best Websites to Find Apartments Worldwide

The site includes a decent set of filters. Search by fee/no fee, square footage, pet and smoking policies, wheelchair access, laundry, and parking.

The user interface seems kind of clunky and old-fashioned by today’s standards.

You might come across duplicate listings and some rental scams.

A longtime go-to for apartment seekers, Craigslist offers numerous listings through its local sites worldwide. Many listings are reasonably priced apartments from smaller landlords.

Craigslist delivers a list view, but property owners and agents can opt to post location maps and photo and video tours of the apartment. Dates for open houses are also easy to find.

Although Craigslist doesn't have its own mobile apps, the site does load on smartphones. Third-party mobile apps are also available, such as CPlus for Craigslist - Officially Licensed, provided for both Android and iOS .

Apartment Guide: Best for Getting a Virtual Tour of Apartment Complexes

You can write apartment reviews.

Most listings are for apartment complexes from large management companies.

If you enjoy finding out about layouts and amenities before setting foot in your prospective apartment, Apartment Guide could be for you; most listings go hand-in-hand with Airbnb, photos, videos, and 3D tours.

Apartment Guide is chock-full of filters. Search an entire state or by nearby colleges or military bases, for example.

RentHop: Best Apartment-Finder Website for Urban Dwellers

Each listing comes with very well informed property and neighborhood profiles, right down to names of specific stores and restaurants nearby.

Offers price comparisons with similar apartments in the neighborhood.

This website only serves map metro areas in the U.S.

If you’re moving to a big U.S. city, conducting highly granular apartment searches on RentHop for virtually any neighborhood is a breeze. Search through a list view, but the site’s drag-and-zoom-enabled map interface is more fun.

RentHop also gives each apartment a HopScore based on the freshness and quality of the listing and the property manager's reputation. However, a HopScore lower than 95 percent is seemingly rare.

Download for:

PadMapper: Most Map-Happy Website

Includes features for hiding listings of no interest to you.

Apartment listings not as abundant as they used to be now that Craiglist listings are no longer included.

PadMapper uses listings from websites such as Apartment Guide and Airbnb to create comprehensive rental maps. In addition, landlords can use the mobile app to post listings directly to PadMapper. Listings are also available for Canada.

Use a built-in drawing tool to designate simultaneous searches of multiple map sections. A "live near" mapping tool lets you find apartments within specified distances of points of interest, such as grocery stores.

Virtual Assistant: Your Voice Search Alternative

If you're not big on data entry, or you simply find playing around with virtual assistants fun, try using Google Assistant , Siri, or Cortana in your web browser or as a mobile app to search for apartments.

Get results quickly, whether asking for "apartments near me" or apartments in another city or zip code.

Your search results with a virtual assistant will likely be limited to apartment finding websites, realtors, and big apartment complexes, so a virtual assistant won't ultimately save you much time.

How to choose the right movies for your kids.

If you've ever carried a terrified child out of a movie theater or covered your kid's eyes (and ears) during a particularly steamy love scene, you know how hard it is to find age-appropriate movies. Adding to the challenge is the fact that trailers for big blockbusters are "leaked" online way in advance of the movie release and, along with TV ads, are viewed by kids even when the movies in question are geared for older audiences. It's tough to stay up to speed and make informed decisions when your kids are begging to see some movie you've never heard of -- or something they  swear  all their friends have seen or are going to see.

The MPAA rating is where most parents start. But "G," "PG," and "PG-13" don't offer enough information, even with the accompanying rating reasons. Guess right, and everybody has a good time. Guess wrong, and you might end up having to explain some really sketchy stuff to your kids.

There truly is a better way. It starts with understanding what content isn't only  age -appropriate but also  developmentally  appropriate for your child. After that, you can determine what's OK based on the things that matter to you, like your kid's interests and individual temperament. What's scary to one 7-year-old may be fun and action-packed for another.

Here are some things to consider when it comes to choosing the right movies for your kids:

What age is the movie aimed at?  Sometimes a movie's target age group is obvious -- for example, when it has characters your child already knows and loves, like  The Little Mermaid . But things get tricky when seemingly age-appropriate characters are put in scary situations, as in  Transformers , for example (the toys are marketed to young children, but the movies are decidedly more mature!). You'll need to make a judgment call based on what you think is right for your kid, taking into account many of the factors described in more detail below.

  • Quality.  Yes, quality can be subjective -- and certainly your kids will like stuff you don't -- but look for benchmarks. Does the story line make sense? Are the characters well-rounded, or do they rely on one-dimensional stereotypes? Is the dialogue believable? Does it engage kids on a meaningful level? Is it well paced? Does the movie use music, special effects, and strong production values to amplify the meaning -- or does it simply go for cheap laughs? There's a big difference between a mindless giant doll commercial such as  Bratz Super Babyz  and the beautifully animated  Tinker Bell and the Secret of the Wings.
  • Educational value.  This is especially important when you're looking for movies for younger kids. It's perfectly fine to choose movies solely for their entertainment value, but if kids can learn something, too, then why not give it a shot? A perfect example of this type of "edutainment" is the  Ruby's Studio series , which uses stories, crafts, and songs to impart lessons on safety, feelings, and friendship.
  • Messages and role models.  Media messages really do affect kids, so it makes sense to choose movies that reflect the kinds of values you'd like your children to absorb. Younger kids are more literal and do better with direct messages, like the ones in  Sesame Street: Ready for School . But for older kids, movies with slightly ambiguous messages -- like  Holes  -- provide an opportunity for you to discuss your own views and values. Also consider the characters. Are they people you'd like real kids to emulate? Are adults present and responsible? Are the characters realistic and relatable -- like the unlikely animal pair  Ernest & Celestine  -- or shallow and stereotypical, like the ones in  Baby Geniuses ? Are there consequences for their behavior?
  • Violence, sex, and language.  Although movies for younger kids don't have graphic violence, sex, or language, many push the limits. It may be cartoon violence instead of realistic violence, kissing and flirting instead of full-fledged love scenes, and gateway words like "heck" and "jerk" (or all-purpose made-up swearing substitutions like "smurf") instead of four-letter curses. All these aspects intensify as movies move up the age range. Common Sense Media offers expert guidelines for the level of violence, sex, and language that's developmentally appropriate for every age, but you may need to make a judgment call for your own child, based on your own values. Don't mind a few F-words? Then  The King's Speech  is probably fine for your older tweens and up, since language is the only iffy content. OK with some big, boomy violence if it's in a context that makes sense and has consequences? Then  The Avengers  might be your perfect family movie night pick.
  • Consumerism.  Did you hear about the  $1,600  Frozen  dress  -- for kindergartners? Product placements (think Coke in the fridge, a BMW in the driveway), fast-food tie-ins (action figures in kids' meals), and merchandise (hello,  Lego Movie !) all are part of movie marketing. Consumerism in a movie doesn't disqualify it from being worthwhile (and, honestly, it's pretty hard to avoid entirely), but it's an important aspect to keep in mind and to talk to your kids about. Train them to be on the lookout for it, and they'll learn some valuable media-literacy skills.
  • Drinking, drugs and smoking.  The presence of these substances in movies is sometimes crucial to the story line (for example, in  Malcolm X ), essential for historical accuracy (as in  Hitchcock's  The 39 Steps ), or related to a key character trait (as with  Captain Haddock in  Tintin ). But there are plenty of examples of gratuitous drinking, drugs, and smoking (in the  Hangover  movies, for example) being portrayed as humorous and relatively consequence-free. We offer guidelines for what's developmentally appropriate for every age, and you may need to make a final call for your kids based on what amount you're OK with. Any time that substance use or abuse comes up, take the opportunity to discuss the issue with your kids.
  • User reviews.  Sometimes it takes a village to figure out which movies are right for our kids. If you're on the fence, see what other parents -- and even kids -- are saying. Although our user community's ratings are based on personal opinion rather than developmental guidelines, they do rate movies using the same tools our editors do, with icons to flag areas of concern, stars to signal overall quality, and a target age to help you decide.

The bottom line is that it's up to you to do your research, and Common Sense Media makes that easy by providing detailed written and video reviews, so you know exactly what to expect. We've done the hard work for you -- you just have to apply it to your family and remember to check the ratings (and maybe check out a trailer) before showing a movie to your kids. And don't forget: If you're not comfortable with what's on the screen, you can always walk out or turn it off.

Online dating sites offer a platform to find a partner that fits into contemporary lifestyles and our ever-increasingly internet-reliant world. These sites are often subscription-based, where you pay a monthly fee to use the service.

Upon signing up for a service, you will usually complete some type of assessment or questionnaire, giving details about what you’re looking for in a partner. Certain metrics are used within the site to match up users, often based on personal characteristics you might have in common, such as education, hobbies, values, goals and more.

Dating sites use various algorithms to introduce possible matches. Typically, after you set up a social media-like profile—where you include a few pictures of yourself, a brief bio and some of your hobbies—the platform can use that information to connect you with similar people.

Depending on how in-depth the features are (some sites offer additional subscription bonuses), you may see other singles based on commonalities, areas of interest and intentions for the future. They may even offer the option to rank the order of importance of certain qualities you desire in a partner, such as education level. Meanwhile, other dating sites may match you solely based on age range or distance.

eHarmony, Your Journey to Lasting Love

  • Provides users with a curated selection of matches based on their compatibility
  • Have complete confidence that all of your compatible matches are looking for the same thing you are, love that lasts
  • Millions of couples have found lasting love

The type of potential matches. While some dating sites are geared toward casual dating, others may lean toward building strong relationships, sharing certain religious beliefs and other qualities. Research the site, the potential matches and the types of customized filters it offers.

The details. Look for how detailed the profile creation process is, since it may indicate how much you can read into other singles’ pages. Different sites may offer different features such as questionnaires, multiple-choice tests or quiz functions to help you illustrate what you’re looking for in a partner and narrow down your options from there.

The cost. Many sites offer basic membership for free, upgrading with a paid subscription.

The safety. Be sure the site offers key safety features before joining, including tools to protect privacy and data from hackers or suspicious members, and that allow you to share where, when and who you may be meeting in real life with your friends and contacts, if you choose to do so.

The cost of using a dating site varies depending on the site/company and subscription plan you choose. For example, OkCupid offers Basic membership subscriptions ranging from $17.49 to $34.99 per month, and Premium membership options between $22.49 to $44.99 per month, depending on length of plan. In this case, purchasing a three or six-month subscription would be more cost-effective than if you were to go the month-to-month route, which is something you may want to factor in during your search.

Some dating sites are more expensive than others, so it’s important to consider your budget and desired subscription length while looking for the right site for you.

There are a few distinctions between paid and free dating sites .

One difference to consider is the level of accessibility you have within the site. Many dating sites offer a limited use of certain features and advertise paid subscriptions within the platform to get full access to all of its features. For example, purchasing a subscription or paying a fee might give you the ability to boost your account and be seen by more potential matches.

There can be benefits and drawbacks in any dating experience, and online dating is no different.

One benefit of online dating is the ability, in most cases, to have access to a wider pool of individuals, with the potential to meet someone on a site or app that you may not have otherwise met in person. Another benefit is the added transparency that online dating offers with certain profile markers, such as desired relationship type and length, which can help users determine if a match has the same dating goals.

However, many online dating apps can be quite expensive, and while some free versions are available, this may come with limited use of the platform. Additional drawbacks of using online dating sites, per 2020 data from Pew Research Center, can include uninvited communication, such as persistent contact from a user you’ve expressed disinterest in, receiving unwanted sexually explicit messages or images or being called offensive names [1] The Virtues and Downsides of Online Dating . Pew Research Center. Accessed 2/7/2024. . Others to look out for are fake profiles and dating scams, which are outlined below.

First impressions of dating profiles often depend on the photos included, so choosing pictures that authentically represent who you are can set you up for success. Using more solo photos than group photos or photos with friends can also make it easier for a potential match to determine whose profile they’re looking at.

Another factor to consider is how you describe your dating goals. Being clear about your intentions for using a dating site and what you’re looking for in a potential partner can add more meaning to your profile.

Additionally, some attributes you can highlight that can help make your profile and messages with a match standout, include humor, intelligence, creativity and originality.

Some online dating profiles are too good to be true. In just the past few years, dating scams have led to victims losing billions of dollars and sensitive personal information, according to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Many scammers use fake profiles to lure you in and then may begin asking for money or personal data they don’t need to know.

Some common dating scam red flags, notes the FTC, include:

  • Being asked for money
  • Being sold a story about financial loss or being asked to invest in an unusual business
  • Always getting an excuse when trying video chat or meet in person

Here For Real Love

You're ready to find your person. eharmony is here to make that happen.

Broad research exists backing the link between good mental health and strong social relationships, whereas loneliness has been linked to sadness and other negative mental health outcomes. While not every relationship may lead to marriage, positive companionship can help improve your wellness on many levels, including:

1. A healthier mind. The level of happiness in a relationship can influence overall health, with positive social associations linked to delayed mental and physical decline, notes research in Psychology and Aging [2] Hawkley L, Cacioppo J. Loneliness Matters: Social Relations and Age-Related Change in Memory . Psychol Aging. 2019;34(6):751–765. .

2. A healthier heart. Positive, supportive social connections including romantic relationships may promote healthy heart functions, suggests data in Frontiers in Psychology [3] Berli, C.. Loneliness Matters: “We Feel Good”: Daily Support Provision, Health Behavior, and Well-Being in Romantic Couples . Frontiers in Psychology. .

3. A longer life. Stable social surroundings factor into staving off isolation, which may lead to a higher risk of morbidity (having a disease or medical condition) and mortality (related to death) [4] Hawkley L, Cacioppo J. Loneliness Matters: Loneliness, social isolation, and all-cause mortality in the United States . SSM - Mental Health. 2021. .

The right dating site for you will depend on what you’re personally looking to get out of using the site. Take your preferences into consideration, such as relationship type, inclusivity of the particular site, what you’re looking for in a partner, site features and cost as you search for the right site for you.

Get Who Gets You

We understand it can be difficult to find a match with whom you share a similar background, goals, or beliefs, and regardless of who you may be looking for, eHarmony wants to help you find the love of your life.

eHarmony’s website and app have filters you can use to find the type of people you’re looking for. For example, you can filter by age, location or specific traits. The free membership plan lets you create a profile and search for matches.

Paid plans start at about $36 — which is higher than other sites on our list — and give members access to unlimited messaging and a host of other features, such as dedicated customer support, the ability to see all members’ photos and more.

  • Thorough matching process
  • International user base
  • Not specifically geared to seniors
  • Free accounts have limited capabilities

Why we chose it: EliteSingles is a Berlin-based dating website that was launched in 2008. Despite its German origins, it has a sizable user base and is available in 25 countries, including the U.S. It offers both a website and a mobile app for iOS and Android devices.

With EliteSingles, you can access a range of compatibility features to help find a partner. There’s a monthly fee for a premium membership, which varies by location and length of the subscription. The free basic membership allows users to create a profile, search for potential matches and receive messages. Free members can’t, however, view photos and they don’t have unlimited messaging.

EliteSingles isn’t specifically designed for older users, but it’s a good option for anyone looking for a serious, long-term relationship, including with someone based in another country.

  • Free members can communicate via messages to recommended matches
  • Many pricing tiers to choose from
  • One of the most popular dating platforms
  • Free members cannot message anyone outside of recommended matches
  • Free members will see visible ads on the page

Why we chose it: Match was launched in 1995 and is one of the longest-running dating websites in existence. Some features are free, but paid plans start at $22 per month. Match offers a lot of different paid options, more than other dating sites offer.

This service isn’t geared specifically to seniors, but it does have many users over the age of 50 and a dedicated “senior dating” section on its website. New users are asked to specify their age range preference when they sign up.

  • Platform is geared toward adults over 50 years old
  • Website allows for local searches without a paid subscription
  • Many paid tiers to choose from, including weekly memberships
  • Large pool of users
  • Free trial doesn't allow users to send messages
  • Limited profile verification

Why we chose it: OurTime is an online dating website designed for senior singles over the age of 50 who are looking for relationships. Its user interface is tailored to meet the needs of an older user base. And the algorithm that connects potential matches considers things like age, location and interests to help users find compatible partners.

OurTime also has a mobile app for iOS and Android devices, which gives users the same functionality as the website, such as creating a profile, searching for potential matches and sending messages.

One thing worth noting: The site has limited profile verification capabilities, so you’ll want to verify on your own that a person is who they say they are before meeting in person.

  • Member blogs are a unique way to get to know someone
  • Good free account offerings
  • Dedicated to adults over 40 years old
  • Need paid membership to send messages
  • Free members only have access to basic search filters

Why we chose it: SeniorMatch is a dating website and app designed for singles over the age of 40 interested in a serious relationship. It has a standout free version with the option to pay for a membership with more features.

Free members can create a profile, browse and “like” other profiles, send and receive “winks” to and from people they’re interested in and reply to messages from premium users. We found that SeniorMatch’s free option has more features than many other free dating websites.

Paid members have access to messaging, advanced search filters and other premium features. SeniorMatch also has several unique aspects, like a member blog and a section dedicated to “senior date ideas.”

  • Uses a personality test to find matches
  • Multiple safety features
  • Exclusively for users over 50 years old
  • Free membership has limited features
  • Limited search features

Why we chose it: SilverSingles is an online dating site and app created specifically for singles over 50 years old looking for meaningful connections. It is part of the Spark Networks group of dating websites, which includes other popular sites like EliteSingles, Zoosk, Christian Mingle, JDate and more.

SilverSingles uses a personality test to match users based on their values, interests and lifestyle. The test also takes into account things like relationship preferences, what users are “looking for” and communication styles. Then, an algorithm uses this information to create a dating profile and suggest compatible matches. Users are not able to search for other potential matches on their own.

The platform also provides a range of safety features, like profile moderation, scammer detection and customer support. Premium accounts start at $25 per month. A free membership tier is available, but it offers limited communication options with potential partners.

  • Has a dedicated "senior" section
  • Facebook integration feature
  • Easy to use
  • Free members can't chat with other users
  • Only premium members get personalized matches

Why we chose it : Zoosk is an online dating website and app that offers Facebook integration — a feature most of its competitors don’t have.

It has over 40 million users in 80 countries worldwide and offers both free and paid membership options. Free members can create a profile, search for matches and send site-specific interactions called “winks” to other members, but they can’t send or receive messages. Paid members have access to additional features like Zoosk’s “SmartPick” feature, an algorithm that provides personalized match suggestions based on their profile.

Paid members have access to additional features like Zoosk’s “SmartPick” feature, an algorithm that provides personalized match suggestions based on their profile.

Zoosk is designed for people of all ages, but it does have a specific “Senior Dating” section on its website. Here, users can set specific preferences for age range, location and relationship goals.

Other Senior Dating Sites We Considered

Here are a few other senior dating websites that may be worth considering.

Senior Chat City

  • Live one-on-one chats and chat rooms
  • Free basic membership
  • No mobile app

Senior Chat City is a live chat platform with adequate security protections and a free basic membership tier. The downside? There’s no mobile app.

Senior Dating Agency

  • Free to join
  • No proof of identity requirement

Senior Dating Agency is a well-established site that is free to join, but we chose not to feature it for a few reasons. The site doesn’t require any proof of identity verification and there is no mobile app.

Senior Dating Websites Guide

Here’s some more information to help navigate the world of online dating as a senior.

What to know before choosing a senior dating site

Like most big life decisions , picking the right dating service involves doing the proper research before you dive in.

Safety and security are vital, so above all, be sure the site you’re considering has a verification process to confirm a person is who they say they are.

The rest mostly comes down to personal preference. Try out a few different services (this is where those free trials come in handy) to figure out which one best fits your needs.

What is the average subscription cost of senior dating websites?

Requirements differ from site to site, but some of the most common are:

The average cost depends on multiple factors. Many of the websites listed here offer tiered subscriptions that give you a discount for a pre-paid length of commitment. Oftentimes, a month-to-month plan averages out to the highest expense if you keep it for a year or longer, and an annual prepaid plan is the most cost-effective option.

What are the requirements to open an account on senior dating websites?

Requirement differ from site to site, but some of the most common are:

  • Age : Some websites require you to be over a certain age to qualify.
  • Personal information : Legitimate dating websites will ask you to provide basic personal information like name, location, gender and email address.
  • Profile information: You’ll also be asked to create a profile, and fill it with facts about yourself — like your interests, hobbies and whatever else makes you unique. Most sites will also ask you to upload at least one picture of yourself to your profile.
  • Subscription fee : Many senior dating sites are free to browse, but you usually have to pay to send messages and see other users’ photos.

How to avoid scams when senior dating

Scams and fraud are inherent risks of online dating. Scammers can create fake profiles and try to manipulate unsuspecting users into sending them money or personal information.

Always be cautious of anyone who messages you to request money, even if you’ve already chatted with them online. And never, under any circumstances, give your social security number, bank account information or passwords to anyone. A scammer could use that information to steal money, make fraudulent charges, open accounts in your name, steal your identity and more. (Hot tip: If you have an account with one of the best banks for seniors , make it a habit of viewing your account activity regularly to keep an eye out for issues.)

Another thing you must do to avoid scams is to verify the identity of the person you’re talking to online preferably through video chat. If they refuse, they may be a scammer.

How to stay safe with online dating

Always remember that your safety is the number one priority. If you have any suspicion about a person you’ve been talking to online, don’t meet with them in person. However, if you’ve verified a person’s identity and want to go on a date, always meet in a public place and tell your family or friends where you are going and when.

Additionally, RAINN (Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network) — the non-profit organization that operates the National Sexual Assault Hotline — suggests taking your own transportation to the date rather than getting in the car with someone you don’t know. This gives you the option to leave the date on your own if you feel uncomfortable or unsafe.

Senior dating websites FAQs

Is it dangerous to use senior dating websites, are dating websites and apps meant only for young adults, what is the safest senior dating website, how we found the best senior dating websites.

Several factors were considered for the creation of this list, including:

  • User base : A successful dating website will have a large base of users, allowing for plenty of potential match options.
  • Security : Online dating can be dangerous if the website facilitating it lacks verification features, or if the site doesn’t allow people to block and report abusive users.
  • Matching algorithm : Some sites allow users to search individually for their matches, but most rely on an algorithm. The complexity of the algorithm is crucial.
  • User interface : The functionality and user-friendliness of a dating site’s browser and app products are important. Interfaces should not be so simplistic that they become limiting, but they also shouldn’t be overly complicated.
