ఓటిటి వేదికపై చిన్న పెద్దా తేడా లేకుండా కథ బాగుంటే చాలు సినిమాలు, వెబ్ సిరీస్ లు  వీక్షకాధరణ పొందుతాయి. దీన్ని దృష్టిలో పెట్టుకొని కొందరు దర్శక, నిర్మాతలు కొత్తదనం ఉన్న కథలకి ప్రాముఖ్యతను ఇస్తున్నారు. మరి అలాంటి కథాంశంతో తెరకెక్కిన 'అయిరతొన్ను నునక్కల్' మూవీ కథేంటో ఒకసారి చూసేద్దాం...

సౌదీ అరేబియాలోని ఒక అపార్ట్మెంట్ లో అగ్ని ప్రమాదం జరుగుతుంది. దాంతో అందులోని వారంతా ఎక్కడికక్కడ బయటకొచ్చేస్తుంటారు. ఇద్దరు పిల్లల్ని తీసుకొని రాజేష్(సంతోష్ కోషి) ఒక కార్ లో తన ఫ్రెండ్ వాళ్ళ ఇంటికి వస్తాడు. అలాగే మిగతా వారంతా తమ ఫ్రెండ్ వాళ్ళింటికి వస్తారు. అయితే అదేరోజు తన ఫ్రెండ్ మ్యారేజ్ డే కావడంతో సెలబ్రిట్ చేసుకుంటారు. అయితే అతని తన భార్యకిచ్చిన ఒక ఖరీదైన వాచ్ చూసి.. అక్కడే ఉన్న మరొక ఫ్రెండ్ ఆరా తీస్తాడు. అలా సరదగా ఒక గేమ్ స్టార్ట్ చేస్తారు. ఎవరైనా ఇప్పటి వరకు మీ భాగస్వామితో షేర్ చేసుకోని నిజాన్ని ఇప్పుడు చెప్పాలంటూ ఒక గేమ్ స్టార్ట్ చేస్తారు. అయితే ఇందులో మొదటి జంట నిజాలు చెప్పడంతో ఇద్దరి మధ్య గొడవ జరుగుతుంది. అలా వాళ్ళిద్దరి మధ్య గొడవ ఇంకా సీరియస్ అవుతుంది. ఇలా ఒక్కొక్కరుగా వారి గురించి చెప్తుంటారు. మరి ఇదెక్కడిదాకా వెళ్ళింది? భార్యాభర్తల మధ్య దాచిన నిజాలు, చెప్పిన అబద్ధాలు ఎలాంటి మలుపుని తీసుకున్నాయనేది మిగతా కథ.

విశ్లేషణ: 

బిల్డింగ్ లో అగ్నిప్రమాదం సంభవించిడంతో అందరూ కంగారుగా బయటకు రావడంతో కథ ఆసక్తిగా ప్రారంభమవుతుంది. ఆ తర్వాత ఒక్కో క్యారెక్టర్ ని పరిచయం చేస్తూ డైరెక్ట్ గా కథలోకి తీసుకెళ్ళాడు డైరెక్టర్ థమర్. ప్రతీ ఒక్కరి లైఫ్ లో తమ భాగస్వామితో చెప్పలేని కొన్ని నిజాలు.. అందరి ముందు చెప్పినప్పుడు అవతివాళ్ళు అర్థం చేసుకుంటే ఓకే.. కానీ అలా అర్థం చేసుకోకుండా ఉంటేనా అసలు సమస్య.. ఇలాంటి ఒక సున్నితమైన అంశాన్ని తీసుకొని దాన్ని ప్రెజెంట్ చేయడంలో థమర్ విజయం సాధించాడు. ఈ కథలో చక్కని స్క్రీన్ ప్లే తో ఒక్కో క్యారెక్టర్ కి తగినంత ప్రాముఖ్యతను ఇస్తూ చివరివరకు ఒక ఫ్లోలో తీసుకెళ్ళాడు డైరెక్టర్ థమర్.

సినిమా నిడివి ఒక గంట నలభై  నాలుగు నిమిషాలు మాత్రమే. ‌ఇది ఈ సినిమాకి అదనపు బలమైంది.‌ కథ సింపుల్ గా ఉంటూనే కాంప్లికేటెడ్ గా మారుతుంది. సరదాకి స్టార్ట్ చేసిన ఒక గేమ్ కొంత మంది లైఫ్ కి ఎలా తలకిందులు చేసిందనేది చక్కగా తీర్చిదిద్దారు మేకర్స్. బోల్డ్ సీన్స్ ఏమీ లేవు. ఫ్యామిలీతో కలిసి చూడదగ్గ కాన్సెప్ట్ ‌ఇది. మొదట్లో కథ కాస్త స్లోగా సాగినా.. ఒక్కో క్యారెక్టర్ గురించి పరిచయాల తర్వాత.. చూసే ప్రేక్షకుడికి అసలు టైమ్ తెలియదు. అలా సాగుతుంటుంది కథ. ఒక్కొక్కరి లైఫ్ గురించి దాచిన నిజాలు చెప్తున్నప్పుడు ఒక ఇంటెన్స్ క్రియేట్ అవుతుంది. వారి స్థానంలో ప్రేక్షకుడు లీనమై ఆలోచిస్తాడు. అంత సహజంగా తీసారు మేకర్స్. ఏదో మన ఇంట్లో వాళ్ళకే ఆ సమస్య వస్తే మనమేం చేస్తామనే ఆలోచనని ప్రేక్షకుడికి రేకేత్తించాడు డైరెక్టర్.

పెళ్ళికి ముందు ఉన్న గతాన్ని, పెళ్ళి తర్వాత మళ్ళీ గుర్తుచేసుకొని.. ఇద్దరు భార్యాభర్తలు విడిపోతారు. వీరిని ప్రేరణగా చేసుకొని మిగిలిన ఫ్రెండ్స్ వారెందుకు విడిపోయారంటూ ఆరాతీస్తూ.. అలా తమ లైఫ్ లో దాచిన కొన్ని నిజాలు చెప్పమని గ్రూప్ లో ఒకరు అన్నప్పుడు మిగిలిన వాళ్ళంతా సంతోషంగా ఉన్నారు. ఎప్పుడయితే ఆ సమస్య తమ దాకా వచ్చిందో అప్పుడే అసలు భయం ,‌ వణుకు మొదలవుతాయి. ఇదంతా చూస్తున్నప్పుడు  'ఆరెంజ్' మూవీలో రామ్ చరణ్ హీరోయిన్ జెనీలియాతో.. లవ్ కొంతకాలమే బాగుంటుంది. అబద్ధాలు చెప్తూ జీవితాంతం మేనేజ్ చేయలేమనే డైలాగ్స్ గుర్తొస్తాయి. అయితే ఆరెంజ్ మూవీకి దీనికి భిన్నంగా ఉన్నదేందంటే.. అక్కడ పెళ్ళికి ముందు కథ సాగుతుంది. ఇందులో పెళ్లి అయిన భార్యాభర్తల మధ్య ఈ టాపిక్ తో గేమ్ సాగుతుంది. కథ మొదటగా నెమ్మదిగా సాగినా వెళ్ళేకొద్ది వేగం పుంజుకుంటుంది. కథ గ్రిస్పింగ్ గా ఉంది. స్క్రీన్‌ప్లే తో పాటు బిజిఎమ్ అదనపు బలాన్నిచ్చాయి. 

నిశధ్ యుసుఫ్ ఎడిటింగ్ బాగుంది. మొదటి ముప్పై నిమిషాలలో చాలా వరకు కత్తెర వాడాల్సింది‌. జితిన్ సినిమాటోగ్రఫీ బాగుంది. నేహా నయ్యర్ బిజిఎమ్ ఆకట్టుకుంది. నిర్మాణ విలువలు బాగున్నాయి.

నటీనటుల పనితీరు:

రాజేష్ పాత్రలో సంతోష్ కోషి ఆకట్టున్నాడు. వినయ్ పాత్రలో విష్ణు అగస్త్య బాగా నటించాడు. వకీల్ పాత్రలో సుదీష్ స్కారియా, బెంజి పాత్రలో రష్మీ కె నయ్యర్ ఇలా తమ పాత్రల పరిధి మేర అందరు ఆకట్టుకున్నారు.

తెలుగు వన్ పర్ స్పెక్టివ్:

బోల్డ్ సీన్స్, అడల్డ్ కంటెంట్ లేని ఈ ఫ్యామిలీ డ్రామా ప్రతీ ఒక్కరికి కనెక్ట్ అవుతుంది. కాస్త ఓపికగా చూస్తే 'అయిరతొన్ను నునక్కళ్' ఫ్యామిలీకి ఒక స్ఫూర్తినిచ్చే పాఠమవుతుంది.

മനസ്സില്‍നിന്ന് നുണകള്‍ വലിച്ച് പുറത്തിടുന്ന 'ആയിരത്തൊന്ന് നുണകള്‍' | Review

നു ണകള്‍ക്കുമീതേ നുണകളില്ല, അവ പെരുപ്പിച്ച് പരത്തുന്ന ഭീതിയോ വെറുപ്പോ ഇല്ല, തുറന്നുപറച്ചിലിലൂടെ കെട്ടഴിയുന്ന നുണകള്‍ പടര്‍ത്തുന്ന കൗതുകവും ആകാംക്ഷയുമെല്ലാമാണ് 1001 നുണകള്‍(ആയിരത്തൊന്ന് നുണകള്‍) എന്ന സിനിമ കണ്ടുകഴിയുമ്പോള്‍ അനുഭവപ്പെടുക. സുഹൃദ്ബന്ധത്തിലെ സ്‌നേഹവായ്പുകളെ ഹൃദ്യമായി അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്നതോടൊപ്പം ദാമ്പത്യബന്ധങ്ങളിലെ ഉലച്ചിലുകളും പറച്ചിലുകളും മുന്നോട്ട് വെച്ച് ചര്‍ച്ചചെയ്യുകയാണ് ചിത്രം. സലിം അഹമ്മദിന്റെ നിര്‍മാണത്തില്‍ താമര്‍ കെ.വി. സംവിധാനം ചെയ്ത് സോണി ലിവിൽ റിലീസ് ചെയ്ത 'ആയിരത്തൊന്ന് നുണകള്‍', ആര്‍ക്കും ആസ്വാദ്യകരമാകുംവിധം വിദഗ്ധമായ ഒതുക്കത്തോടെയാണ് അവതരിപ്പിച്ചിട്ടുള്ളത്.

മനസ്സടുപ്പമുള്ള ചെറിയൊരു സുഹൃദ്വലയത്തിലേക്കും അവരൊരുമിച്ചുള്ളൊരിടത്തേക്കും കഥയെ ചുരുക്കി, ലളിതവും ഉദ്വേഗജനകവുമായ സംഭാഷണങ്ങളോടെ സിനിമയുടെ എഴുത്തിനെ മികവുറ്റതാക്കിയിരിക്കുകയാണ് താമറും ഹാഷിം സുലൈമാനും. ഗള്‍ഫിലാണ് കഥ നടക്കുന്നത്. കുടുംബവുമായി വിദേശത്ത് താമസിക്കുന്ന സൗമ്യ, രാജേഷ്, മുജീബ്, സല്‍മ, ബെന്‍സി, എല്‍വിന്‍, ദിവ്യ, വിനയ്, ജോഫി, അലീന, വക്കീല്‍ എന്നിവര്‍ അടുത്ത സുഹൃത്തുക്കളാണ്. സൗമ്യ-രാജേഷ്, മുജീബ്-സല്‍മ എന്നീ ദമ്പതിമാര്‍ താമസിക്കുന്ന ഫ്‌ളാറ്റില്‍ തീപിടിത്തമുണ്ടാകുന്നു. അവിടെനിന്നും രക്ഷതേടി ദിവ്യയുടേയും വിനയ്‌യുടേയും വീട്ടിലെത്തുകയാണവര്‍. ചിത്രമാരംഭിക്കുന്നതങ്ങനെയാണ്. വിവരമറിഞ്ഞ് ഓടിയെത്തുന്ന അവരുടെ മറ്റ് സുഹൃത്തുക്കളും അവരോടൊത്തുള്ള രംഗങ്ങളുമെല്ലാം കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളുടെ ബന്ധത്തിന്റെ ആഴത്തെ സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. അപകടത്തില്‍നിന്ന് തലനാരിഴയ്ക്ക് രക്ഷപ്പെട്ട കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളുടെ ആധികളും തിരിച്ചറിവുകളുമെല്ലാം റിലേറ്റ് ചെയ്യാന്‍ പ്രേക്ഷകന് എളുപ്പം സാധിക്കുന്ന തരത്തിലാണ് അവരുടെ ആശയവിനിമയങ്ങള്‍.

അഞ്ച് ദമ്പതികളും വക്കീലും വിനയ്‌യുടെ വീട്ടില്‍ സഹായിയായെത്തുന്ന ഇന്ദുവും അവളുടെ ഭര്‍ത്താവുമാണ് ചിത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാനകഥാപാത്രങ്ങള്‍. പല ജീവിതസാഹചര്യങ്ങളില്‍നിന്നുള്ളവരാണവര്‍. പല പ്രകൃതക്കാരായ വ്യക്തികള്‍. സ്‌നേഹം വരണ്ടുതുടങ്ങിയ അവരുടെ കുടുംബജീവിതവും അതിലെ വിള്ളലുകളും കാണികളുടെ ആത്മപരിശോധനക്ക് അവസരമൊരുക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. അഭയംതേടി വന്ന കൂട്ടുകാരെ സ്വീകരിച്ച വിനയ്‌യും ദിവ്യയും തൊട്ടടുത്തദിവസം വിവാഹവാര്‍ഷികമാഘോഷിക്കാനിരിക്കുകയാണ്. എല്ലാവരുംകൂടി ഏറ്റുപിടിച്ച ആ ആഘോഷവേളയില്‍ സംഭവിക്കുന്ന കാര്യങ്ങളും അതിനിടയിലെ ട്വിസ്റ്റുമെല്ലാം പ്രേക്ഷകരെ പിടിച്ചിരുത്തുന്നു. പങ്കാളിയോട് പറഞ്ഞ നുണകളും പറയാത്ത രഹസ്യങ്ങളും ചുരുളഴിയുന്ന ആ രാത്രിയില്‍ ശിഥിലമായേക്കാവുന്ന തങ്ങളുടെ ബന്ധങ്ങളെ ശക്തിപ്പെടുത്താന്‍ നടത്തുന്ന ശ്രമങ്ങളും പ്രകടമാകുന്നുണ്ട്.

ചുരുങ്ങിയ കഥാപരിസരങ്ങളാണ് ചിത്രത്തില്‍ കാണിക്കുന്നതെങ്കിലും വിരസതയില്ലാതെ കാഴ്ചകളെ ഒപ്പിയെടുത്തുകൊണ്ട് ഛായാഗ്രാഹകന്‍ ജിതിന്‍ സ്റ്റാന്‍സിലാസും കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളുടേയും കഥയുടേയും നീക്കത്തിനനുസരിച്ച് സംഗീതമൊരുക്കിയ നേഹ നായരും യക്സനും പ്രത്യേകം കൈയ്യടി നേടുന്നു. നിഷാദ് യൂസഫിന്റെ കത്രികകട്ടുകള്‍ ചിത്രത്തിന് രൂപംനല്‍കി പാകപ്പെടുത്തിയത് വിദഗ്ധമായാണ്. ചിത്രത്തിലുടനീളം പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെടുന്ന കഥാപാത്രങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് മുഖം നല്‍കിയ വിഷ്ണു അഗസ്ത്യ, രമ്യ സുരേഷ്, ഷംല ഹംസ, നിനിന്‍ കാസിം, ജിന്‍സ് ഷാന്‍, നൗഫല്‍ റഹ്‌മാന്‍, വിദ്യാ വിജയ്കുമാര്‍, സൂരജ് കെ. നമ്പ്യാര്‍, രശ്മി കെ. നായര്‍, സുധീഷ് കോശി, സജിന്‍ അലി, സുധീഷ് സ്‌കറിയ, അനുഷ ശ്യാം തുടങ്ങിയവരുടെ പ്രകടനമാണ് 'ആയിരത്തൊന്ന് നുണകളെ' മനോഹരമാക്കുന്ന സുപ്രധാനഘടകമെന്ന് നിസ്സംശയം പറയാം.

സൗഹൃദത്തിലെ കളിചിരികളും തമാശകളും നിറഞ്ഞ സന്ദര്‍ഭങ്ങളോടൊപ്പം അലീന എന്ന കഥാപാത്രത്തിലൂടെയും അലീന-ജോഫി ദമ്പതികളിലൂടെയും പുരോഗമനപരമായി ആശയങ്ങളെ ചിത്രം പറഞ്ഞുവെക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. 'ലേഡീസ് ഫസ്റ്റ്'എന്ന് പറയുന്ന തന്റെ പങ്കാളിയുടെ ഔദാര്യത്തെ അവള്‍ ചുരുട്ടിയെറിയുന്നുണ്ട്. കടുത്ത സാമ്പത്തികപ്രതിസന്ധി നേരിടുന്ന ഭര്‍ത്താവിനെ രക്ഷിക്കാന്‍ തീരുമാനിച്ച് ദുരിതവും അപമാനവും പേറേണ്ടിവരുന്ന ഇന്ദുവും അവളുടെ അരക്ഷിതാവസ്ഥയും സമാന്തരമായി സിനിമയില്‍ കാണിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. കഥാപാത്രങ്ങള്‍ക്കുള്ളില്‍ അടഞ്ഞുകിടക്കുന്ന രഹസ്യയറകളുടെ പൂട്ട് തുറക്കലാണ് 'ആയിരത്തൊന്ന് നുണകള്‍'.

സംവിധായകന്‍ വെളിപ്പെടുത്തിയപോലെ 'പരസ്പരം അറിയാത്ത രഹസ്യങ്ങളാല്‍ പരീക്ഷിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന സൗഹൃദങ്ങളുടെ കഥയുമാണത്'. 'പരസ്പരം നുണപറഞ്ഞ് ജീവിക്കുന്ന ഭാര്യാഭര്‍ത്താക്കന്മാരാണ് യഥാര്‍ഥ കള്ളന്മാര്‍, ഡിവോഴ്‌സ് ആയവരല്ല' എന്ന് പറയുന്ന വക്കീല്‍ കഥാപാത്രം ദമ്പതിമാരായ പ്രേക്ഷകരെ ആകര്‍ഷിക്കുമെന്നുറുപ്പാണ്. നര്‍മം കലര്‍ത്തിക്കൊണ്ട് ആ കഥാപാത്രം തൊടുത്തുവിടുന്ന അമ്പുകള്‍ ലക്ഷ്യസ്ഥാനങ്ങളെ നോക്കി പായുകയാണ്. നുണകള്‍ പുറത്തുവരാത്ത മനുഷ്യരില്‍നിന്ന് അവയെല്ലാം വലിച്ച് പുറത്തിടാനുള്ള ശ്രമവുമായാണ് ചിത്രം മുന്നോട്ട് നീങ്ങുന്നത്. ദാമ്പത്യത്തിലെ പാഠങ്ങളെ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളിലൂടെ ചിത്രത്തിലവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. 'സത്യവും നുണയുമെല്ലാം അത് കേള്‍ക്കുന്നവര്‍ തീരുമാനിക്കുമ്പോള്‍', നാം കാണേണ്ട ചില കാഴ്ചകളെ ഈ സിനിമ അടിവരയിട്ട്‌ തെളിയിക്കുകയാണ്.

1001 Nunakal movie review: A slow burner that underlines it’s all fun and games until truths begin to pour out

Thamar kv's aayirathonnu nunakal (1001 lies) explores the complexities of both lies and absolute candour, while refraining from definitively advocating for one over the other, allowing viewers to form their own opinions..

Is it acceptable to say lies in a relationship, especially when two share a romantic connection? While some contend that lying contradicts the essential foundation of a relationship, which is trust, others argue that it might be preferable to choose a (sweet) lie over a (bitter) truth. Both viewpoints have their merits. While harmless lies that protect the other person’s emotions could be seen as beneficial, this also raises the question of who determines the degree of “sweetness” in these lies and brings up the issue of whether someone can legitimately withhold the truth from another. Furthermore, what if the two partners have differing opinions when it comes to the matter of dishonesty?

Thamar KV’s debut feature, Aayirathonnu Nunakal (1001 Lies), a title that seems to be inspired by the Middle Eastern folktales collection One Thousand and One Nights, poses this question to audiences, exploring the complexities of both lies and absolute candour. However, the film refrains from definitively advocating for one over the other, allowing viewers to form their own opinions and interpretations.

The story, set in Al Khobar, Saudi Arabia, starts with two couples – Mujeeb and Salma, and Rajesh and Sowmya, along with their children – relocating to a large mansion owned by their friend after a fire ravages their apartment complex. Most of their possessions are lost, leaving them with only a few belongings and a clear sense of distress that’s evident on their faces.

During their stay, their hosts, Vinay and Divya, propose that the couples extend their stay to celebrate the former’s 10th wedding anniversary. The gathering expands to include a few more friends, and they all come together at Vinay and Divya’s place to mark the joyful occasion.

To add some “excitement” to the night, they collectively agree to a game where each person shares a previous lie they told their partner and then reveals the truth. While the game starts in a lighthearted manner, it takes an unexpected turn as the revelations become more intense. Some revelations deepen certain relationships, while others create rifts. The situation escalates to the point where mutual suspicion arises among the group.

While this backdrop could evoke memories of Jeethu Joseph’s mystery thriller 12th Man, 1001 Nunakal only coincides with the Mohanlal movie in terms of this. Its tone and the execution of the game differ significantly from the aforementioned film as Thamar’s movie takes a more realistic approach rather than the suspenseful atmosphere of a thriller.

The standout feature of the production is its well-crafted screenplay, penned by Thamar and Hashim Sulaiman. The script maintains a consistent pace from start to finish, skillfully avoiding any unnecessary deviations. Despite the movie’s concise 104-minute duration, both writers have succeeded in granting significant importance to each character, both individually and within their respective relationships.

Notably, the dialogues crafted by the duo deserve special recognition for their nuanced nature and distinct dialects, effectively highlighting the diverse origins of the characters hailing from various parts of Kerala.  The screenplay adeptly delves into diverse facets of each character, shedding light even on how men easily manipulate women, leading the latter to believe they are solely at fault.

The only issue within the narrative lies in its embrace of the stereotype that paints the domestic worker as the perpetrator during a crucial plot juncture. Although this was essential for the character’s dynamics, it did appear to rely on a stereotypical portrayal of the economically disadvantaged.

It’s also undeniable that certain aspects of the film’s composition evoke memories of Bash Mohammed’s Lukka Chuppi (2015), though the narrative and the manner in which events unfold are entirely distinct.

On the performance front, while familiar faces such as Zhinz Shan , Remya Suresh , and Vishnu Agasthya excel in their respective roles, delivering commendable performances, the film introduces a group of fresh talents who collectively uphold the quality with their outstanding acting. Notably, Shamla Hamza shines prominently among them.

Furthermore, the film’s exceptional art direction, led by Ashik S, contributes to its visual allure. Every scene in 1001 Nunakal boasts a sense of opulence and completion, thanks to his team’s meticulous efforts. Unlike the tendency in many movies to overly emphasise the wealth of characters residing in expansive mansions through unnecessary additions, 1001 Nunakal prudently ensures that only essential elements are presented on screen, and even these are tastefully placed.

Cinematographer Jithin Stansilaus’ skillfully composed frames and the precise cuts by editor Nishad Yusuf too are worthy of mention. Furthermore, Neha Nair and Yakzan make a significant impact by crafting background scores that harmonise seamlessly with the film’s rhythm and essence.

In short, 1001 Nunakal isn’t tailored for those craving fast-paced shots with captivating moments every 10 minutes. Nevertheless, for those in search of a meticulously crafted viewing experience that unfurls at its own unhurried pace, the film certainly won’t let them down.

'Aayirathonnu Nunakal' review: Slow-burning mystery drama on unmasking lies and testing bonds

'Aayirathonnu Nunakal' unfolds as a slow-burning thriller under the direction of Thamar KV. Echoing the narrative style of Jeethu Joseph's Mohanlal-starrer '12th Man', the film delves into the lives of a close-knit group of friends living in the gulf whose inadvertent gathering cascades into a series of tumultuous events.

In '12th Man,' the plot centres around a murder, while 'Aayirathonnu Nunakal' hinges on the deepening conflict among friends, ignited by the shadows of past lies.

A blaze in their apartment prompts Rajesh, Soumya, Mujeeb, and Salma to stay at Vinay and Divya's home. Their circle expands, welcoming more friends and a lawyer. The script is precise, and skillfully helmed by director Thamar, who adeptly keeps the narrative aligned with its core.

Is there really a need to unveil past lies among couples? The movie explores the intricate dynamics and social repercussions that surface. With most characters being newcomers, the audience benefits by not favouring any single persona.

The movie dissects diverse couples and their ego-driven clashes, shedding light on their workings. That being noted, the movie refrains from sporadically sprinkling mystery. Rather, it invests time in gradually unravelling its core premise. Running parallel is a subplot involving the housemaid and her husband. In a departure from conventional approaches, the film forgoes a murder-centric mystery, opting instead for the intrigue generated by the past's unsettling truths.

In terms of performances, the entire cast delivered commendable acts, with standout portrayals by actors such as Remya Suresh, Vishnu Agastya, and Shamla Hamza. Unlike in '12th Man', the actors' performances in 'Aayirathonnu Nunakal' exude a sense of authenticity and avoid melodrama. The film's actors have masterfully portrayed subtle and lifelike emotions, while the story intriguingly refrains from overtly cautioning against the impact of lies, leaving audiences with an open-ended reflection.

Both halves of the film maintain a compelling pace, ensuring an engaging experience without any noticeable lag. However, the subplot falls slightly short in terms of charm. Thamar's 'Aayirathonnu Nunakal' is undoubtedly a commendable effort, although a bit more focus and sharpening around the edges could have elevated its impact. Nevertheless, it stands as a solid option for enjoyable OTT viewing.

Thousand and One Lies (1001 Nunakal, 2023) Movie Review – An Engaging film which Questions the Parochial Meanings of Truth, Lies, Deception and Trust

A false fabrication of twisted words with alternate meanings intended to deceive someone for personal gain or what they believe to be the ‘greater good’: commonly referred to as a lie. How dangerous is a lie? Why do we, as humans, as seekers of truth and justice, resolve to lie? What are its long-term repercussions? What does lying say about the liar? While generally taught that lying is bad, it is human nature to withhold the truth in certain situations that benefit oneself and sometimes for the sake of others. Lying represents fear. Fear of loneliness, rejection, embarrassment, and judgment. Thamar’s Aayirathonnu Nunakal (1001 Nunakal, Translated to Thousand and One Lies, 2023) explores these aspects surrounding lies and secrets to raising potent questions on the sacrifice of truth involved in forging and sustaining relationships.

Thousand and One Lies (1001 Nunakal, 2023) Plot

When a fire breaks out in their apartment building in Ajman, United Arab Emirates, Rajesh, and his family seek asylum with friends Vinay and Divya, along with Mujeeb and Salma, who encounter. Upon realizing that it is Vinay’s and Divya’s 10th wedding anniversary the next day, the three couples and along with two others and a mutual friend of theirs, decide to celebrate it together. The film follows the revealing of the many secrets shared amongst the couples and the personal revelations this results in as they reinvent themselves in the eyes of each other. It becomes a cathartic release of pent-up emotions and frustrations to some extent that is distasteful at times but eventually becomes healing and introspective.

1001 Nunakal is predominantly set in a single location and therefore demands a lot more from the screenplay and individual performances to carry the narrative and keep audiences engaged. With the main characters all being played by new faces and the director himself having his debut production, there was even more pressure on the screenplay to shine through. Mostly focusing on the dynamics between heterosexual couples; some in new relationships, some old, some created through an arranged marriage, and some antithetical to even the idea of marriage, the film provides various case studies on how gendered roles arise from the intersection of tradition, class and religion.

For example, in the case of Rajesh and Soumya, Rajesh is unemployed while Soumya works as a nurse. This tilts the gendered power scale in favor of Soumya is, the breadwinner of the family. Rajesh feels insecure as his stereotypical role as the masculine protector of the family is subverted due to his unemployment. In another instance, the husband of the couple invests extra time and effort to shower his wife with love and affection to make up for his inability to provide her with a child.

But as the story progresses, we are informed of how it is actually the wife who is unable to bear the child and not the inability of the husband. This causes psychological turmoil and a momentary loss of trust. The film is laden with many such events. Still, it seems to forward a narrative of how all such insecurities are usual in relationships and that it is human to err but that there is an overall need to be empathetic and understanding rather than being egoistic and vengeful.

The use of 6 couples allows the film to represent various social diversities as well. Out of the 13 central characters, we are presented with various regional slangs of Malayalam ranging from Kannur, Kottayam, and Thiruvananthapuram dialects. Despite focusing on Malayalee migrants in UAE, characters represent diverse cultural and class backgrounds from their varied upbringings in Kerala, which inform their divergent sensibilities as well. For example, Joshy and Aleena, the youngest couple in Vinay’s friend circle, embody a more progressive sensibility when it comes to marriage and the role of women in a family.

Aleena, the young feminist archetype, argues for women to exercise their right to divorce in a more aggressive manner and dismiss the role of women as ‘symbols of suffering and patience.’ Such outlooks do not sit well with Salma and Soumya, who justify the institution of marriage as customary, necessary, and eternal. This polarity, in my opinion, later contributes to the plot as it translates to distrust and even borders on ageism and misogyny at times. That being the case, it cannot be overlooked that Aleena’s opinions on the role of women seem to be more informed from tweets and social media posts than from active readership and textual citations, as her opinions seem to be half-cooked and without substance.

One of the characters that stand out the most is the domestic help working at Vinay’s residence, Indhu. While the main 6 couples all seem to represent middle or upper-middle-class characters, Indhu and her husband represent the struggling lower class who, despite their best effort to stick to moral righteousness, are resolved to commit theft and lie about it in order to ensure their survival. Class hierarchies and their accompanying power structure is vividly presented in the film but in a more nuanced manner rather than being coded as black and white. This nuance comes in the form of the trust that Vinay and Divya share with Indhu and how despite their friends accusing Indhu of engaging in thievery, Vinay and Divya support her without a doubt.

The film remains engaging on its own with its screenplay, but what really stands out is the technical qualities, particularly the cinematography and color grading. Much of the scenes are shot in depth with the character backgrounds blurred and possessing a yellow tint which to some extent resonates with their upper-class ‘richness’. When shooting indoors, all scenes have filled compositions that emulate the material wealth that characterizes Vinay as a successful businessman in an exuberant capitalistic place like the UAE, which makes the class divide between him and Indhu all the more evident. The film, unfortunately, suffers from comparison with many films that follow a similar structure but more so from Jeethu Joseph’s recently released 12th Man (2022), which follows similar cracks in trust and friendships but presents higher stakes and therefore ends up being more gripping when it comes to plot development.

But despite this, Thamar presents an interesting slice-of-life story of how ideas of truth and lies are very subjective concepts that cannot be inherently labeled as good or bad while parallelly presenting a narrative on the intercultural experience of living in the Gulf where people from different parts of the globe coincide for sustaining a transnational existence beyond parochial boundaries of nationalism, religion, culture, and most importantly, language.

I like to do movies based on complex human emotions, says Malayalam director Thamar KV

Before getting premiered on Sony LIV, his directorial debut 'Aayirathonnu Nunakal' was screened at the IFFK in December 2022.

Malayalam director Thamar KV is on cloud nine after his debut feature film Aayirathonnu Nunakal (1001 Lies) got critical appreciation and was loved by audiences.

The movie premiered on Sony LIV in August. Before that, it was screened at the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) in December 2022.

Thamar is based in the UAE. He has been working in the advertising industry in Dubai for over a decade.

In an exclusive chat with South First , the filmmaker gets candid about his debut flick and the challenges he faced in the filmmaking process.

How it all started?

Thamar KV wrote the story in 2016-17 and pitched it to a well-known producer. To his surprise, the producer told him that the story has a striking similarity with the Italian movie Perfect Strangers (2016) which Thamar didn’t watch.

When he read the brief on IMDb, he was in for a shock. The Italian film, indeed, revolves around a group of friends who gather for a dinner party and reveal their secrets to one another — the synopsis of his story. So, Thamar decided to shelve it and started penning more scripts.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, the demand for movies shot in single locations was on the rise. Two people from the Malayalam industry asked him if he would make a movie with his shelved story. This made him realise that the story has potential.

“In 2021, director Zakaria introduced us to Salim Ahamed, who agreed to produce my film. During auditions, one of the artistes revealed that Mohanlal’s 12th Man (2022), which she was a part of, had a similar concept,” the filmmaker recalled.

However, after talking to team 12th Man , he realised that had a different storyline. Hence, he moved forward with the production work of his project.

“We had a camp for one week and the auditions were done with utmost seriousness. Vishnu Agastha, who is now popular with his negative character in the Malayalam blockbuster RDX (2023), also auditioned and participated in our workshop,” Thamar said.

The director was confident about Aayirathonnu Nunakal from day one. In fact, after finishing the shoot, he realised the movie had its own identity.

“At the IFFK screening, we initially feared that the crowd might think it to be a copy of 12th Man . But we were elated as the directors and technicians appreciated our work,” he recollected.

Aayirathonnu Nunakal went on the floors in 2022 after the Covid restrictions were revoked. The crew and the actors were all new. It was shot in a linear format and the actors helped each other during the shoot.

About the characters in Aayirathonnu Nunakal , Thamar KV said he took inspiration from different families.

“A few people like to share their feelings and talk about their daily activities with their spouses and some don’t. I tried to a cue from them all.”

The filmmaker explained further, “Not all are good and not all are not bad. Everyone has a grey shade in them. Adjustment is the key to a happy family life. While some enjoy it, others suffer. My characters reflected the same.”

Thamar revealed that the case of a divorced couple mentioned in the movie has been taken from a real-life incident. “In this case, there is justification from the side of both husband and wife. This incident made me curious since the couple got divorced due to a lack of trust.”

The director met many people from various backgrounds in the past 10 years which, he says, helped him carve the characters. “Some are super rich, some are middle class, and some are poor. So, we planned meticulously on how to place these characters in the movie,” he said.

Since the actors were all new, Thamar and his team decided to have a strong technical team. “Ashik did the art direction and the main set — the mansion in Ajman. The whole villa was empty. We filled the set with the needed properties. It’s all teamwork.”

While filming, they thought that the flick would be perfect for an OTT release. Moreover, it wasn’t shot in Cinemascope.

Though some people felt that the film should be released in theatres, there were no favourable conditions since many big-budget projects were failing to do well at the box office.

After it was premiered on Sony LIV, Aayirathonnu Nunakal drew rave reviews. Since it was available in multiple languages, the film won the hearts of audiences from various States.

Future projects

An avid lover of Iranian films, Tharam says that he has many story ideas in his mind. “I do have several story ideas for big films. Well, not all are commercial films. Once I come up with a concrete script and if I believe that story is meant for theatres, I will make a movie.”

He further added, “I like to do stories based on complex human emotions and the problems they create. I want to tell the stories of people around me.”

The filmmaker is currently penning a story set against the backdrop of Odisha.
