From 1866 to 1878, Oxford Street’s Paddington Reservoir was built. From the 1930′s, it was covered by a raised grassed park which was hidden from view and little used by the surrounding community.

2022, Sustainable Affordable Housing - An Indicator Assessment Tool for the City of Copenhagen

The City of Copenhagen has formulated a vision for housing affordability in context of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG's) presented by the United Nations. However, no indicator assessment tool has been developed for measuring whether progress is being made towards ensuring sustainable affordable housing (SAH). An indicator assessment tool is a recognized method for both scientific inquiry and policy development within measuring progress towards sustainable development. Therefore, the research objective of this thesis is to develop an indicator assessment tool for SAH to the case of the City of Copenhagen. Furthermore, an assessment is made of whether the City of Copenhagen is progressing towards sustainability.

Housing drives urban development and has a significant potential for contributing to sustainability. However, ample sustainability indicator sets fail to include relevant indicators of sustainable housing—assessment seems to be an underdeveloped topic. We chose the United Nations Geneva Charter on Sustainable Housing as a conceptual foundation for the proposed assessment tool. This study presents a comparative analysis of the housing indicators used by the single-family housing rating systems (SHRSs), in which the residential urban environment (RUE) influences buildings' certification scores, emphasizing the relationships of six systems developed by middle-income countries (MICs)-BEST, CASA, GBI, BERDE, Green Homes, and LOTUS-and the two most-recognized rating systems, BREEAM and LEED. The aim is to provide new housing indicators that are capable of bringing the concept of sustainability into the cities of MICs. The results reveal that the percentage of influence that single-family housing (SFH) can achieve in the metric established by each system is relatively low. However, considering all of the identified indicators, this influence could increase to 53.16% of the total score in multi-criteria evaluations. Furthermore, a significant lack of indicators for mandatory criteria evaluations was found, with CASA being the only system that considers their inclusion. This paper identifies 37 indicators for multi-criteria assessments and two for mandatory-criteria assessments, providing new perspectives on several topics. Furthermore, the methodology established to obtain the indicators could be useful for other researchers in the identification of new sustainable indicators.

Sustainable development is inconceivable without healthy real estate market. A housing project can be regarded as sustainable only when all the dimensions of sustainability (environmental, economic, and social) are dealt with. There has been an increased interest in using sustainability indicators for evaluating the impacts of the new development projects. ‘’ Flexible Architecture ’’ term was made common by the book – ‘Flexible: Architecture that responds to change’ by Robert Kronenburg , according to whom the majority of architecture is static and doesn’t adapt or change over time, which stands in contrast to the natural world that adapts according to its ambiance. Robert’s idea was that architecture might be made as flexible as nature.

The term “Flexibility” is defined because of the unrestricted free range of motion, any feature or a vibe that’s susceptible and lithy to vary. The concept of flexible architecture was proposed in contradiction to ‘tight-fit – functionalism ’ . Flexible architecture is meant to be movable, multi-purposed, and malleable, it also can be thought to be a modular design on a bigger scale. The main idea of flexible architecture is that the built environment should act because of the living beings, and be able to answer the changes in its surroundings. It proposes a solution to the increasing population by conceptualizing how a built environment can be constructed to adapt. The flexibility of a building and its elements alongside its design can allow it to be used efficiently in spite of the changes within the operational requirements whereas the inflexible buildings might become obsolete. As a whole, design flexibility allows the user to wiggle with time.

Architectural flexibility is feasible in a countless number of ways; it can be in terms of materials and finishes, interiors , exterior façade , partitions, furnishing , structural members, and many more.

In interactive architecture, the buildings should be responsive to the number of external stimuli, including but not necessarily limited to environment, usage, interaction, or occupation. Interactive architecture comprehends the building automation but it also includes forms of interactive connections and responses that may be put in pure communication purposes as well as in the emotive and artistic realm, thus entering the sector of interactive art.

8. Movable Flexible Building

Movable flexible buildings can be relocated or repositioned, and have the capability of being torn down and reassembled in another location. At the earliest master drawing board of large-scale development schemes, flexibility becomes the elemental aspect in ensuring such projects make it to fruition. Major urban development take a few years to style and deliver.

14. Flexible Building Management

Flexibility also can be embedded within individual spaces within buildings. No single-use class requires the occupation of a building for 24 hours and 7 days. Office buildings are often deserted after 7 pm, and many residential buildings are left heavily unoccupied Monday – Friday during the day. This means there’s capacity in many urban spaces for a further occupation.

16. Flexibility and Sustainability in Architecture

Throughout history, many architects attempted to renovate buildings from static forms to flexible and dynamic forms to get the changing needs of inhabitants. Therefore, attempts were made to design spaces and buildings that can adapt and react positively with the environment, such as noise, daylight, wind, temperature, or humidity. This can be achieved by using flexible and sustainable concepts during the architectural design process.

The US Census Bureau reveals the number of families in poverty in the United States in 2014 was 9.5 million, at a rate of 11.6 percent. In the current economic climate, many more families are facing the possibility of eviction, foreclosure and homelessness. Low income families may be able to secure a residence through low-income housing organizations. Orange County Community Housing Corporation is an organization that offers a program in addition to long-term housing in areas such as financial literacy, education, and health. In this setting, tenants may begin to think about more future oriented prospects rather than daily/weekly survival issues. As families become more stable, their perceptions of success and how the program may help them will reveal how services can be tailored more effectively.

The purpose of this ethnographic study is to discover how participants within Orange County Community Housing Corporation define success. As tenants are involved in the program, program definitions may play a part not only in shaping tenants’ immediate goals (i.e., finding employment, returning to school), but also their overall perception of success. Tenants’ definitions of success may also contribute to how the program is shaped. This qualitative study will utilize participant-observation and semi-structured interviews with the overall aim to explore the intersection of tenant and program definitions of success and their convergence towards sustainable outcomes for tenants, which includes averting homelessness and working towards greater “self-sufficiency.”
