About Theses and Dissertations

A dissertation or thesis is a document submitted in support of candidature for a degree or professional qualification presenting the author's research and findings.  (International Standard ISO 7144: Documentation — Presentation of theses and similar documents ).

For most universities in the U.S., dissertation is the term for the required submission for the PhD, and thesis refers only to the master's degree requirement.

Other Universities

T he best source to find theses is ProQuest Dissertations & Thesis Global .  Policies regarding theses and dissertation collections largely vary between universities.  So check the library website of the university of interest.

Carnegie Mellon University

Carnegie Mellon theses are now ONLINE and can be searched through the ProQuest database Dissertations & Theses @ Carnegie Mellon University that enables access to citations and abstracts of all dissertations and theses, as well as the fulltext in PDF format.  Scroll down and select Dissertations & Theses, then do a regular search. Print versions are also available in the libraries collection.

The Carnegie Mellon Library catalog , uses the term THESIS to denote both masters' theses and dissertations.  However, the number of master's theses is limited.  Within the libraries, theses are located in designated areas and are shelved in alphabetical order by the author's last name.  The catalog treats theses and dissertations like books and they can be borrowed as such.  Theses may be in print, microfiche, or microform.

  • In the catalog use the Advanced Search :  search by author, title, or keyword limiting to type THESIS.
  • For a list of theses from a specific department, use Advanced Search to combine a keyword search for the name of the department with location THESES.  E.g., search for "Dept. of Computer Science" with THESES as the location.
  • For a reasonably complete list of theses at Carnegie Mellon, use Advanced Search to search Carnegie Mellon University Dissertations in the Subject line.

Other Countries

Center for Research Libraries:  Foreign Doctoral Dissertations CRL has more than 800,000 cataloged foreign doctoral dissertations from more than 90 countries and over 1200 institutions.

CSUF Dissertations & Theses

A  thesis , commonly required to obtain a master's degree, is supposed to test a student's understanding of his or her field of study. A  dissertation  is written by a doctorate student and focuses on original research.

Dissertations and theses are scholarly sources and examples of grey literature ( or gray literature ).  Grey literature is material that has not been published through traditional means and generally does not go through a peer‐review process.

1.  How do I write a thesis at CSUF? (Deadlines, awards, etc.) 2. CSUF Thesis/Dissertation Manual 3.  How do I find a CSUF thesis? 4.  More on dissertations, theses, and projects  (ARCHIVED CATALOG) 5 . Developing strong thesis statements 6.  Attend a thesis retreat at CSUF

Searching for a Dissertation/Thesis,

1. Look in our catalog if its from CSUF

2. Look in resources (right side)

3. Look in open access repositories at university libraries websites where the dissertation/thesis was written - may provide full access

4. Try contacting author or advisor of dissertation/thesis for a copy

5. If you cannot find the dissertation/thesis, try requesting it (free of charge) from  interlibrary loan

Final Exam (Thesis Defense)

The Final Oral Examination (oral thesis defense) is conducted by the supervisory committee according to Graduate School regulations. A student will be passed only if the committee is satisfied that the thesis research and documentation are unquestionably of the quality that will bring distinction to the candidate and the department . The committee may request further work of the candidate before a final decision is made.

All students must understand that they are responsible for ensuring that the submitted thesis meets the requirements of the Graduate School for proper format. Ample help is available from the Graduate School Thesis and Dissertation Editor in the form of a Handbook for Theses and Dissertations as well as seminars. Theses with improper format will be rejected. When students send a draft to their committee, they must also upload their thesis for Preliminary Review to the Graduate School.

The student must contact the ECE Graduate Coordinator at least four weeks prior to the exam for assistance to schedule the date, time and location with the student’s Supervisory Committee. At least one week before the exam the student must provide the Graduate Coordinator with a copy of the abstract and title of the thesis. A Report of the Final Oral Examination and Thesis for the Master’s Degree form will be completed by the Graduate Coordinator for approval signatures during the defense and then submitted to the Graduate School.

Thesis Requirements

The supervisory committee must give preliminary approval of the thesis prior to the defense. The defense can be scheduled after this approval. The student must provide one copy of the thesis to the chair of the supervisory committee at least three weeks before the defense, and one copy to each of the other committee members at least two weeks prior to the defense.

After successfully defending the thesis, the student must upload the final version of their thesis to the Graduate School. You will be required to know the UNIDs of each of your faculty members. If you do not have these, you can contact the Graduate Coordinator .

Evolving Intrinsic Triangulations

This thesis presents algorithms and data structures for performing robust computation on surfaces that evolve over time. Throughout scientific and geometric computing, surfaces are often modeled as triangle meshes. However, finding high-quality meshes remains a challenge because meshes play two distinct and often-conflicting roles: defining both the surface geometry and a space of functions on that surface.

One solution to this dilemma, which has proven quite powerful in recent years, is the use of intrinsic triangulations to decouple these two concerns. The key idea is that given a triangle mesh representing an input surface, one can find many alternative triangulations which encode the exact same intrinsic geometry but offer alternative function spaces to work in. This technique makes it easy to find high-quality intrinsic triangle meshes, sidestepping the tradeoffs of classical mesh construction. However, the fact that intrinsic triangulations exactly preserve the input geometry—one of the central benefits of the technique—also makes it challenging to apply to surfaces whose geometry changes over time.

In this thesis we relax the assumption of exact geometry preservation, allowing the intrinsic perspective to be applied to time-evolving surfaces. We take as examples the problems of mesh simplification and surface parameterization. In the case of mesh simplification, we provide a general-purpose data structure for intrinsic triangulations which share only the topological class of the input surface, but may feature different geometry. In the case of surface parameterization, we build more efficient data structures and algorithms for the special case where the geometry changes conformally, using a connection between discrete conformal maps and hyperbolic geometry. In both cases, we find that the intrinsic perspective leads to simple algorithms which are still robust and efficient on a variety of examples.

Computer engineering research papers/topics, case-based reasoning system for prediction of fuel consumption by haulage trucks in open–pit mines.

Abstract: The shovel-truck system is commonly used in open-pit mining operations. Truck haulage cost constitutes about 26% of open-pit mining costs as the trucks are mostly powered by diesel whose cost is escalating annually. Therefore, reducing fuel consumption could lead to a significant decrease in overall mining costs. Various methods have been proposed to improve fuel efficiency in open-pit mines. Case-based reasoning (CBR) can be used to estimate fuel consumption by haulage trucks. In ...

PhD Defense: Feedback for Vision

IRB IRB-4105

This thesis explores the application of feedback in image and action understanding, as well as video monitoring. It introduces Mid-Vision Feedback (MVF), a mechanism that modulates perception based on high-level categorical expectations, enhancing accuracy and contextual consistency in object classification. This approach is extended to action understanding through Sub-Action Modulation (SAM), which incorporates context into action interpretation by hierarchically grouping action primitives. SAM demonstrates superior performance over various video understanding architectures, improving action recognition and anticipation accuracies. Additionally, a configurable perception pipeline architecture, the Image Surveillance Assistant (ISA), is presented to aid watchstanders in video surveillance tasks by integrating human-specified expectations into the perceptual loop. Lastly, taking inspiration from contextual contrasting in MVF, a learning formulation for motion and context separation is proposed, showing improvements in action recognition and anticipation accuracies across multiple datasets.

Test input minimization, which is minimizing the size of a test input without losing any important outcome such as the emergence of a crash, has been a subject of extensive research, due to its importance in the facilitation of the debugging process. A notable proposed approach is Delta Debugging in which the portions of the input are iteratively removed to see which portions are responsible for the crash. After the introduction of Delta Debugging, several enhancements have been suggested for the Delta Debugging algorithm, including Hierarchical Delta Debugging (HDD) and Balanced Hierarchical Delta Debugging (BHDD). These algorithms operate on hierarchical event series and improve the speed of Delta Debugging by applying it at each level rather than on the whole series. In this work, the HDD and BHDD algorithms were implemented on an Android automatic GUI testing tool named APE. The tool demonstrated its ability to reduce the gathered traces to significantly shorter traces without the disappearance of the original crash.

Automated and Portable Machine Learning System

The explosive popularity of Machine Learning (ML) drives the rapid advance in ML models, systems, and hardware. Nevertheless, it remains challenging and labor-intensive to quickly adapt existing ML systems to new models and hardware to maximize performance. We observe that it is attributed to existing ML systems falling short in portability and automatability across several crucial layers of a system stack. However, building a portable ML system requires non-trivial modeling of intricate commonalities and differences of diverse ML models or platforms. In addition, automating ML system layers introduces the challenge of designing practical search space and search algorithms to customize optimizations to a given model and hardware.

In this thesis, we aim to tackle the challenges above of building an automated and portable ML system with a focus on crucial ML system layers. Specifically, the thesis explores ways to build an efficient system that automates 1) integration of ML backends and 2) ML parallelisms and makes them more portable. We develop a user interface and system stack to be more portable across different backends and underlying hardware. We also design practical search space and algorithms to automate backend placement and parallelism.
