“ Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam ”, possibly one of the most famous lines emerging from Sanskrit literature. This phrase is another demonstration of the all-inclusive attitude that our Indian tradition has. Unity in diversity is something that we have been practicing for thousands of years, the underlying belief says the same, we have emerged from one, the Brahman, the ultimate reality.

Originally from Maha Upanishad, the “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” phrase is part of this Shlok.

Sanskrit transcript: अयं निजः परो वेति गणना लघुचेतसाम्। उदारचरितानां तु वसुधैव कुटुम्बकम्॥ Transliteration: ayaṃ nijaḥ paro veti gaṇanā laghucetasām। udāracaritānāṃ tu vasudhaiva kuṭumbakam॥

English translation: This is mine, that is his, say the small minded, The wise believe that the entire world is a family.

It is a Sanskrit phrase meaning that the whole earth is one family . The first word is made up of three Sanskrit words - Vasudha, Eva and Kutumbakam . Vasudha means the earth, Eva means emphasizing and Kutumbakam means a family. The concept of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam originates from Hitopadesha. Hitopadesha is a collection of Sanskrit fables in prose and verse. According to the author of Hitopadesha, the main purpose of creating the Hitopadesha is to instruct young minds the philosophy of life in an easy way so that they are able to grow into responsible human beings..

Oneness in diversity is exhibited in nature with the appearance of a rainbow, which is an aggregation of diverse synchronous colors in the ethereal sky. When colors are separate they disperse and are not visible. By the magical prismatic effect of sun and rain clouds the concerted reflection forms sublime rainbow signifying harmony and equanimity. Same way , our culture is a beautiful amalgamation of diverse languages, diverse traditions and diverse existence . Respecting and celebrating cultures is the beauty of diversity. This is what is respecting the humanity and being human. Universal love and brotherhood makes us understand the pains and pleasures of others and to be aware of it and to share the concerns. Let's open our heart's , open our arms to embrace and heal . Inculcate universal love and peace for universal family. All Pervading Consciousness in the whole Humanity is the Universal Consciousness present in each one of us ..We all emanate from one supreme source to merge back to the same source.

Far from seeing the whole world from the point of view of one’s own family, people are not afraid of harming their own family because of their greed. Morality is disappearing among the people, the level of sensitivity in the hearts has reduced now.  People keep thinking only about their benefits, even if they have to go to any extent for that, people are ready to go.

There is a need of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam once again to re-establish peace in the world so that people can feel oneness despite different differences. It is very necessary to have such a feeling for coexistence, otherwise one day the human race will reach the brink of extinction.

To live in harmony all religions should be respected.

We should follow these principles to make the world as one family with the spirit of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam and create a new world order. The First Principle of Oneness All individuals are interdependent in a specific way, connected to the earth as a whole.  Everyone’s existence is not possible without the other, so we should respect each other.

• Acceptance and Tolerance

 Tolerance works on inter-religious agreement and relationship between individuals and between social systems and countries.

•  Cooperation and Respect

Human solidarity is based on participation and respect for each other.  “Accept and respect all religions as we respect our own”.

 “Love and compassion for others open the door to solidarity of individuals and solidarity of religions.”

• Understanding and Compassion

 The third guideline of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam – The world is one family, the essence of which comes from finding out who am I? Also, to live life peacefully it is necessary to develop our understanding about different religions and different societies.  Empathy for all living things in all circumstances.  Empathy is the establishment of solidarity and world harmony.

•  Ahimsa (non-violence)

For a peaceful person, the whole world is one family.  He will not be afraid of anyone, nor will others be afraid of him.

•  Exchange

The fourth guideline is the principle of discourse.  Harmony can be achieved through dialogue.  Dialogue between religions produces common connections and a deeper understanding of beliefs. Understanding of faiths and religions furthers a culture of harmony and amity and helps us to live as one family under God.

The whole world is a family

In our Indian culture, we have heard of a famous Sanskrit dictum, “ Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam -“which means the whole world but is a family . It screws deeper and gives further enlightenment, “Counting one as a friend and other as a stranger is the work of a small mind. But to those of noble character, the entire universe is but one family.” Hence from times immemorial, Indian culture upholds this as the most important moral value.

In the globalized world of today equality may be apparently spoken aloud, but the nature tells us that we are all equal before God. The new threat of COVID 19- breaks this wall of distinctions between race, religion and region. Although one gets up in the morning, with HOPE to NEW LIFE, yet ends up in panic by reading the tidbits from the newspaper.

Our heart goes to you, ITALY – the epicenter of the pandemic. The report on 20 March from CORRIERE DELLA SERA , was nothing less than shocking. 627 deaths in a single day. Tears well up in the eyes as one reads the report and perceives the exponential growth in both death and infections spread. It is not the story of a single day, it continues … and further Italy is not solitary, other Countries too are facing the identical status quo. Young and old, poor and rich, all are experiencing the similar fate. None of us are safe too, the whole world is voyaging in the same boat of anxiety.

Countries struck by Covid-19 take serious measures under quarantine in order to curb the spread of the virus. STAY HOME or SOCIAL DISTANCING- is the best weapon, to combat the virus. The lock down of the social life does give rise to new problems. Especially those who earn their daily bread on regular wages, those others too who are elderly and have no one to deliver the grocery at home and those who go to stores to purchase the necessary and find nothing. Still there are others who walk miles and miles to reach their homes.

How to forget the government officials, the army, the military and the police force, who are working uncompromisingly for the safety of the nation. Kudos! To the fatigued medical teams, everyone on foot to attend the cases that are multiplying. The physical tiredness, the exhaustive workload, the pain stricken heart, tears filled eyes, while bidding Adieu to those whom they cannot save. Above all the pain of not seeing their family, for fear of infecting them. In addition you our dearest ones, who are dying alone, without a family member at your bed side, forgive us, for not accompanying you on your final journey from this earth.

The apprehension reaches its zenith. Everything collapses and we are unable to save the influx of corona virus patients. We know not our fate! But the one and the only thing we can be sure at this moment…, that we all belong to the one universal family. Let the words of Pope Francis, echo in our hearts: “Let us remain united…let us make our closeness felt.”

The disease is progressing, and so must be the response. We will win if we are together. There is still time to flatten the curve of new infections. The key is unity and inter dependence . We unite ourselves with the whole world and unite it to the PASSION of our LORD JESUS CHRIST. Let HIS precious blood wash us and make us a new.

The World is One Family

An excerpt from a recent address to the Parliament of World Religions

I turned 90 in march, 2020. Over the past 70 years I have personally witnessed the dramatic changes that have taken place on the planet. Science and technology have indeed made extraordinary progress. It is a cruel irony that despite this phenomenal progress our own planet is now itself in danger due to human greed and exploitation. We may well be in for a major climate change calamity by the end of the next decade. It is, therefore, fitting that the interfaith movement is working closely with the environmental movement. 

However, we must remember that the primary purpose of the interfaith movement is to bring about a better understanding between different religious communities. We find that there are still many regions in the world which are plagued by inter-religious conflicts, and there are organizations active around the world, determined to create chaos. To counter these forces, it is essential for the interfaith movement to have a clear philosophical underpinning. It is in this context that I place before this audience a set of five sutras based on the Vedantic philosophy, which give us a map for addressing the problems humanity faces.

The first sutra, Ishavasyamidam sarvam yatkinchya jagatyam jagat, says that this entire cosmos, from the stately waltz of the galaxies to the frenetic rock and roll of sub-atomic particles, is inhabited by the same Divine Power. This represents the philosophic correlate of the Unified Field Theory, with which scientists are seeking to explain all the multiple phenomena in the cosmos. Almost all religions believe in an overarching Divinity pervading the universe, which in the Hindu tradition is known as Brahman.

The second sutra is Ishwara sarvabhutanam hriddeshe tishtati, which reveals that the pervasive Divine Power also resides in each one of us, known in Hinduism as the Atman . This is ultimately the golden thread that links the entire human race into what my third sutra, Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, “ The world is a family,” expresses. It is only in our lifetimes that science and technology have given us instant communications, the Internet, television and a vast array of technological instruments which have unified the world as never before. However, these instruments have often been used for aggression, terrorism and interreligious conflicts. We must realize Planet Earth is a single living entity, and that calamities such as the Covid pandemic and climate change can never be controlled unless all countries work together. 

The fourth sutra, Ekam Sadvipraha Bahudha Vadanti, meaning “the Truth is One, the wise call it by many names,” is the very foundation of the interfaith movement. The Hindu acceptance of multiple paths to the Divine is, I would submit, a prerequisite for any meaningful interfaith dialogue. We can be totally committed to our particular religion, but unless we accept the fact that different religions offer differing paths to the Divine, we will never attain a peaceful global society. Thus, we must adopt an inclusive, not exclusive, approach.

The final sutra, Bahujana sukhaya, bahujana hitaya cha , speaks of the welfare of the many, the happiness of the many. This means that apart from working for our own salvation, all of us in the interfaith movement must commit ourselves to help the less fortunate members of society to attain a decent standard of living.

Friends, if together we accept the five sutras that I have placed before you, we will begin to fulfill our responsibility as members of the interfaith movement and to move towards a peaceful and caring global society.

“Vasudaiva kutumbakam-one earth, one family, one future: “- India’s mantra for a healthy and prosperous earth as the G20 leader

India is a civilization, not just a country, nation, or government. Taking over the leadership of G20 by India, at a time when the world is battling pandemics, war, energy and climate crisis, and resource restriction is not just appropriately suited politico-economically but socio-culturally as well. COVID-19 proved that the unbelievably diverse world was too complex to be packed into a utopian hold-all one size fits all ideas. However, the fact is that COVID-19 may only have uncovered the crisis, which had been in the making for the latter part of the last century and extending into the current. India’s leadership of G20 is therefore a window of opportunity for a more sustainable worldview as the ideas are coming from a civilization with a long history of acceptance of the entire world as one family- Vasudaiva Kutumbakam.

India is a civilization, not just a country, nation, or government. Leadership of G20 coming to India, at a time when the world is battling pandemics, war, energy and climate crisis, and resource restriction is not just appropriately suited politico-economically but socio-culturally as well.[ 1 ] G20 a prominent post–World War II initiative aimed initially at international coordination of economic policy, includes institutions such as the “Bretton Woods twins,” the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, and the World Trade Organization. The group was founded in response to the series of massive debt crises that had spread across emerging markets in the late 1990s, and eventually impacted the United States, primarily based on the realization that the G7, G8, and the Bretton Woods system would be unable to provide financial stability, and that it needed to be a new, broader permanent group of major world economies to achieve sustainable economic growth.[ 1 ] However, because of the adoption of the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Climate Agreement in 2015 and addition of, more “issues of global significance” such as migration, digitization, employment, healthcare, the economic empowerment of women, and development aid to the economic agenda, the importance of G20 is beginning to receive enhanced attention.[ 1 ]

Though the detractors of rising India are likely to claim that the taking over as the leader of the G20 as rotational and cosmetic only; it is the timing of the taking over as the leader and events preceding it make this period of India’s leadership—a significant geopolitical event that.

Globalization vs. Civilizations?

All civilizations have evolved through different chain of value systems to promote human existence and progress. Although the western civilization has continue to claim the domain leadership of globalization; others civilizations such as India and others in the Asia/Africa may not carry a similar perspective. But, unfortunately the contemporary dominant narrative that defines the modern scientific advancement in social, political, economic, ethical, environmental, or health is rooted in the claim of the western world as the sole heir to the history of modern scientific achievements, indicating a geographical origin and therefore the obvious source for currently accepted norms in globalization. The establishment of this apparently incorrect claim of being the sole intellectual source of human progress everywhere across the world undermines the value of diversity as essential to establishing true globalization. This so called universalist view of the western idea is build on a superstructure of one size fits all globalization, and encompassing all cultures, societies, and geographies-making true understanding of globalization an eventual impossibility.[ 2 ]

Industrial Revolution, WWII, and the Post-colonial World: Present Crisis

Despite the history of globalization being not new, the promotion of it in the currently accepted form after World War II (post-colonial) definitely picked pace only in the last five to seven decades. In an advisory titled, “Measures for the Development of the Underdeveloped Societies,” the United Nations Department of Social and Economic Affairs observed that “There is a sense in which rapid economic progress is impossible without painful adjustments. The ancient philosophies have to be scrapped, old social institutions have to disintegrate; bonds of caste, creed, and race have to burst; and large numbers of persons who cannot keep up with progress have to have their expectations of a comfortable life frustrated. Very few communities are willing to pay the full price of economic progress.”[ 3 ]

Based on the conviction arising out of this philosophy, the advancement of the idea of durability and invincibility of a western science–economic–military framework extending to health and the environment has been comflict infested. This framework is coming to suspected now of only thinking about how to make rules to manage the non-western world, particularly Asian nations, which have 60% of the world’s population into that world order, which it defines as globalization.

While the eastern and sourthern civilizations were being brushed aside, common sense and reasoning suffered, environment, medicine, and health lost their way until COVID-19 emerged in 2020. As if COVID has not been enough, the latest war in Europe has only unmasked Europe’s inability to resolve conflicts peacefully, more so in times of serious resource restriction, despite its claims to be moral, ethical, and all-knowing. But, then peace and contentment may not be at the center of European ethos. Europe’s continuous accusing of others about sectarian/civil conflicts (their one of the stated reason for their universalist view and form of globalization) cannot relieve them of the burden of the Yugoslav wars, often described as Europe’s deadliest armed conflict since World War II. The wars, which ran from 1991–2001, resulting in the dissolution of Yugoslavia were marked by many war crimes, including genocide, crimes against humanity, ethnic cleansing, and mass wartime rape.[ 4 ]

Similarly west’s continued claims of helping the world improve on climate, as the largest component of a green planet are also half-hearted, to say the least. Despite being among the largest contributors to environmental pollutants, their unwillingness to transfer climate-friendly technologies to poor nations is legendary. The success of, “loss and damage” as part of the United Nations climate summit will need to be watched over for these reasons.[ 5 ]

It is a known fact that for decades, wealthy nations, which have emitted half of all heat-trapping gasses since 1850, have avoided calls to help reseource contributors but colonization victim poor countries recover from climate disasters, fearing that doing so could open them to unlimited liability. However, then again, addressing liabilities has not been their strength.

Post-COVID World

The COVID-19 pandemic, despite the loss it caused—human, societal, or economic, has inadvertently helped debunk economic theories based in unilateral dominance as well as the science that came as a by-product of such theories.[ 6 ] It (COVID-19) taught us that benchmarking and marketing itself as the sole inheritor of scientific and moral values as applicable universally may be fraught with danger. A crisis of high magnitude will unmask if benchmarking is superficial and Covid-19 was once in a century crisis-a rare black swan event. The war in Europe, the energy crisis, the climate disasters, and the resource restriction appear only to have added to the damage caused by COVID. COVID-19 proved that the unbelievably diverse world was too complex to be packed into this utopian hold-all one size fits all idea. But, COVID-19 actually may have only uncovered a crisis, which had been in the making for the latter part of last century and extending into the current. The ruin staring at us is not just of economics, it is of ethics, it is of unwillingness to accept diversity as the core principle of existence, it is of true identification of the principles of globalization with every global citizen an equal partner. Most significantly though on the better side, it is a period of actual realization of a failure of the universalist views of the west.

Window of Opportunity-India’s Leadership of G20

Probably, this is a time of acceptance of a more sustained worldview coming from a civilization with a long history of acceptance of global citizenship as fundamental to their growth and sustenance. In that sense, it is more than appropriate that the leadership of G20 at this time of crisis comes to the cradle of civilization—India, a nation known for seeking its own answers for any kind of crisis based on the principle of global ideation but local impact. Nothing personifies globalization in a truer sense than the core Indian civilizational principle uniting all living things (humans, animals, and plants) “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam—One Earth, One Family, One Future.”[ 7 ]

Ayam nijah paro veti gananaa laghuchetasaam Udaarcharitaam tu vasudhaiva kutumbakam”

It means “This is my own and that a stranger–is the calculation of the narrow-minded, for the magnanimous-hearts however, the entire earth is but a family.” The principle that finds similar formulations–from Tangun’s Hongik Ingan in Korea, or Ubuntu in different African traditions, echoes the potential to build a global ethical framework for peace, environmental friendliness, and prosperity for all people.[ 7 ] The philosophy of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” is also complementary to the core Indian civilizational principles of Satya (truth) the principle that equates God with soul or Ahimsa (non-violence) a positive and dynamic force, which means benevolence or love or goodwill or tolerance (or all of the above) of all living creatures, including the objects of knowledge and various perspectives or Asteya (no desire to steal) refers not just to the theft of objects but to refrain from exploitation or Aparigraha (non-possessiveness) to live simply and keep only those material things that are required to sustain the demands of daily life. India’s offering to the world as articulated by the prime minister of India, “Indian culture is very rich and has inculcated in each one of us great values, we are the people who have come from Aham Brahmasmi ( I am divine ) to Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam ( One Earth, One Family, One Future ). ”[ 8 ] It is this timeless current of thought that gives India an unwavering belief in multilateralism and globalization.

Future of the Planet

Civilizational understanding of Indians on the continuity of human existence on Earth is based on the principles of continuous “seeking of answers.” Over over several period of several millenniums, though Indian civilization has kept introducing more complexity and allowed it to develop a more comprehensive and wholesome view of the fundamental concepts of environment, education, and health. One of the core values is that the well-being of Mother Earth depends on the preservation and sustenance of the environment. “Whatever I dig from thee, O Earth, may that have quick recovery again. O purifier, may we not injure thy vitals or thy heart.”[ 9 ]

As world suddenly realizing the impermanence of its own existence is looking for comfort and support; G20 is expected to contribute significantly to a healthy, prosperous, and equitable world. The arrival of the leadership of G20 in India’s hands is most appropriately timed as the world is expecting the arrival of true globalization—the Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam. There has to be a global willingness to accept diversity as the core principle of existence, it is of true identification of the principles of globalization with every global citizen an equal partner. The world can become prosperous and healthy only if peace and progress go hand in hand. Globalization must embrace civilizational diversity for sustained peace and development and conflict resolution.

The Whole World is One Family

             The title may sound like some fantasy, or a overly utopian idea, but actually this is the premise of the Vedic teachings. That is why there is the saying in Sanskrit, Vasudhaiv Kutumbikam , “the world is one family”. Certainly we can see that the whole world is populated by people who are working to attain the same things: happiness, peace, security, resources like food and shelter, and a hopeful future. How much easier it could be if we focused on our similarities instead of our differences. And with that, how much easier it would be to find the necessary cooperation that would pave the way for global assistance in helping everyone acquire what they need.

             Yes, we are all born in certain parts of the world and may have different physical or cultural characteristics. You may be born a Caucasian in America, or a black person in Africa, or an Arabian, or German, or in an Islamic family or Christian, etc. But did you make a decision that this was what you were going to be? Or did you just sort of find yourself in this situation? Did you just happen to have a family that taught you what you should accept yourself to be? Or did you really make a deliberate decision that this was the identity you wanted to accept? Or, on the other hand, would you really like to see more deeply than this identity and discover what you are above and beyond the temporary and changing body? The fact of the matter is that we are all hoping and struggling to find the same basic needs as everyone else. So this means that whatever the appearances of the body may be, we all have many of the same aspirations. And we share the planet similar to the way a family of brothers and sisters share the same home.

             Why the Vedic texts teach how we are all one family can be explained. The Vedic literature, the oldest spiritual and philosophical texts in the world, do not preach the superiority of one religion over another, but espouse the doctrine of santana-dharma , which is the eternal path for all living beings based on the nature of the soul. These ancient Vedic scriptures only recommend the highest level of dharma that a person can follow, depending on what he or she would like to accomplish in this life. Otherwise, we can consider a variety of thoughts and philosophies that may assist in our progress. This is also why he Rig Veda explains: aano bhadrah kritawo yantu vishwataha , which means, “Let noble thoughts come to us from everywhere.”

             The premise is that we are all spiritual beings who are not these bodies but only inside them. Our real identity is not whether we belong to a certain ethnic group or culture. Yes, we may follow a certain path or religion, but these can be changed and the soul is above all such temporary designations. And the nature of the soul is to love and be loved. Everyone is working and wishing for that, because happiness is found in relations, and no happiness is higher than a deep loving relationship. But the highest relationship is that which we, as spiritual beings, share when it is based on devotion to the Supreme Being, the ultimate lovable object. That is the eternal spiritual path, or santana-dharma .

             By having a solid understanding of such spiritual knowledge, there is automatically a respect for all others regardless of race, sex, or species. This brings a moral and peaceful social behavior in everybody toward everyone. By having respect for everyone’s spiritual identity, parts and parcels of the Lord, this also brings an innate happiness in us all. We can understand that we are only visiting this planet for a short time, and that we are all in this together. In other words, my contribution to your well-being, especially spiritual well-being, will be an automatic contribution to my own existence. In this way, society at large is in a state of constant improvement. That is the goal of the Vedic way of life.

             Therefore, the Vedic system means a way of life that aims at the elevation of everyone in society to a higher level of consciousness. It means to assist ourselves through a disciplined and godly life to understand the purpose of our existence as well as to become a spiritually realized person. It also means that we help every other individual soul because by helping others we help ourselves. That itself is a natural state of being when we can perceive God as the Supersoul, Paramatma, within everyone. All of this is encouraged by, and increases, a natural faith in an all-pervading Supreme Being. Such faith and focus on the Supreme Being, when systematically developed, can elevate us to return to our real spiritual home after death, which is one of the most important goals of the Vedic lifestyle.

             This Vedic premise is one of the reasons why India has always welcomed so many other religions into the country. India is the homeland of some of the oldest religions in the world. In the Vedic system, there is room for both dissent and digression and freedom of choice. The basic principle is that the freedom of the individual is all important. It is not that the beliefs of one must be imposed on another. Thus, different communities following different ways can live together in amity. Spiritual Truth itself can manifest in different ways, depending on the lessons that an individual needs to learn, and the ways that he or she may need to grow in this particular lifetime. Therefore, because of different levels of consciousness within people, it should not be expected that only one religion or philosophy has everything that can fulfill everyone everywhere.

             The trouble we see so much of in the world today is not so much a clash of religions, but a clash of individual egos of people who associate their bodily identity and cause with their religion. It is the tendency of the human mind to cling to those people who are similar, and claim superiority over those who are different. This itself leads to the divisions of religion, caste, ethnic group, or race. Thus, the tendency becomes to defend one’s own weakness, inferiority or insecurity by unnecessarily criticizing and hurting others to establish one’s own sense of position and superiority. However, in these days this is often done in the egotistical guise of defending one’s own religion. But this ignores the very love, compassion and tolerance that most religions claim to represent or teach. And certainly it ignores the very love, mutual respect and cooperation that we seek, and that the world depends on if we and this planet are to survive. Why not take the noble path of being more willing to live up to your religion rather than to simply fight or die for it? This alone would settle many of our differences and world problems. We have to decide whether we want to live with each other or fight with one another. The answer should be obvious.

             As it is concluded in the Atharva Veda : “We are birds of the same nest. Wearing different skins, speaking different languages, believing in different religions, and belonging to different cultures – yet we share the same home, our earth. Born on the same planet, covered by the same skies, gazing at the same stars, breathing the same air, we must learn to progress happily together or miserably perish together. For humans can live individually but can survive only collectively.”

Head – Aspirational Districts Collaborative

India is striding towards its next goalpost of becoming Vikasit Bharat by 2047 in the ongoing Amrit kaal.  The theme of the G20 dialogues in India encompasses Social Justice in its truest sense – One Earth, One Family, One Future. Social justice is delivered when there is respect for diversity, when there is equality, and equal opportunities for all. India has been consistently demonstrating her large vision of social justice by leaving no stone unturned to establish parity.

A good start

The G20 India presidency and its unifying theme is a great platform for much needed narratives and actions where world leaders are engaging in constructive dialogues; and also, an opportunity for India to showcase her affirmative actions on priorities. This could be landmark start of conversations and action needed particularly among the south globe nations.

The government of India has been prioritising transformation at the very last mile, where the most marginalised and vulnerable live. Examples being the aspirational districts program in 112 districts and the recently launched aspirational block program, across 500 blocks; both anchored by Niti aayog.  Prioritisation is evident with the Central TB Division having launched the multi-partner “Aashwasan” campaign to address and eliminate deeply prevalent TB in tribal population; and the increase in establishment of Eklavya model residential schools to ensure access to quality education to children from tribal communities. The budget allocation of the Ministry of Tribal Affairs has also been substantially increased (by a whopping 190.01 %) from Rs. 4295.94 crore in 2013-14 to Rs. 12461.88 crore in 2023-24.

It is encouraging that socially, economically and geographically challenged regions are being prioritized to improve quality of lives through partnerships with many hyper-local NGOs.

The most revolutionary accomplishment has been the leveraging of digital technology as a big equaliser to ensure quality of life at the last mile. The Aadhar, the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), Cowin, the recently launched Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) and Direct Benefit Transfers are noteworthy instances of inclusive development that is leaving no-one behind.

Exits that bode well

India is making multi-pronged moves to meet its commitment towards Sustainable Development Goal 1 that aims to end poverty in all its forms everywhere. It is heartening to note that the recent UNDP report on multidimensional poverty (2022) reaffirms that 415 million people exited from poverty in India.

The focus on inclusive growth leading to social justice is evident from the implementation of several schemes, bringing to life what Nelson Mandela expressed, “Overcoming poverty is not a task of charity, it is an act of justice.” Common service centres set up in villages and panchayats pan-India, and introduction by some states of initiatives like “Sarkar Aapke Dwaar” are bringing services and grievance redressal to the doorstep of the underserved. Several flagship schemes have covered much ground in ensuring access and a better quality of life – Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, National Urban Livelihood Mission, National Rural Livelihood Mission, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna, Antyoday Yojna, to name few. Campaigns like Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao are not just addressing the problem, but also changing mindsets which is critical to bring parity and social justice.

Sweet spots towards social justice

Progress in the lives of the poor in underserved geographies needs to be a continued top priority for states and the centre. 

Last mile convergence : Winds of change are gathering speed as inter-ministerial and inter-departmental convergence are proving to be gamechangers in bringing benefits to all. The need is to establish effective structures, processes, and capabilities for last mile convergence at panchayat, block, and district levels. Encouraging examples are evident in aspirational districts where Aspirational Districts Collaborative, (Piramal Foundation in partnership with NITI Aayog, states and district administrations) is working on last mile convergence to achieve citizen-focussed goals.

Drivers of growth – Elected Women Panchayat Representatives and SHGs : India has 1.4 million women elected panchayat representatives, the largest in the world and over 82 lakhs self-help groups across India. These hold vast potential to be gamechangers in socio-economic development.  Elected women representatives could bring in greater efficiency to their daily functioning. District Administrations could set up structures to leverage voices of community women leaders for strengthening implementation across multiple sectors.  

Taking responsibility : If boundaries have to dissolve, if we have to be Vikasit Bharat by 2047, by addressing complexities of our social order and building confidence, India needs to consistently prioritise and drive more platforms, partnerships and multi-sectoral collaboration in underserved geographies and communities, something that has already started through the philosophy of Sabka Saath, Sabaka Vikash, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayas.

The corporate sector can play a crucial role in creating economic opportunities by reimagining business in backward regions through leveraging existing momentum built by One District One Product, Vocal for Local, etc. This would not only create more jobs, but also make these regions economic accelerators, and inspirational hotspots.

While the state has a responsibility towards its people, it is also about individual responsibility and a reawakening of our social consciousness, where each one of us pledges to see what I can do , with the selfless, enduring spirit of Sewa Bhaav. 

 Bharat – the role model of democracy

This G20 year is also an opportunity to showcase our nation as a role model of democracy. A country that has a vision of equality, prosperity, with an inclusive and developed society, distinguished by a human-centric approach at its core. An India where, as Rabindranath Tagore said, “ Where the mind is without fear, and the head is held high, where knowledge is free – an India that is a heaven of freedom ”; and a global model of social justice. Let’s all work together to build an India of our aspirations.
